Abstract

This paper introduces a new hybrid descriptor for 3D point matching and point cloud registration, combining local geometrical properties and learning-based feature propagation for each point's neighborhood structure description. The proposed architecture first extracts prior geometrical information by computing each point's planarity, anisotropy, and omnivariance using a Principal Components Analysis (PCA). This prior information is completed by a descriptor based on the normal vectors estimated thanks to constructing a neighborhood based on triangles. The final geometrical descriptor is propagated between the points using local graph convolutions and attention mechanisms. The new feature extractor is evaluated on ModelNet40, Bunny Stanford dataset, KITTI and MVP (Multi-View Partial)-RG for point cloud registration and shows interesting results, particularly on noisy and low overlapping point clouds.

Abstract

Experiments aimed at direct searches for WIMP dark matter require highly effective reduction of backgrounds and control of any residual radioactive contamination. In particular, neutrons interacting with atomic nuclei represent an important class of backgrounds due to the expected similarity of a WIMP-nucleon interaction, so that such experiments often feature a dedicated neutron detector surrounding the active target volume. In the context of the development of DarkSide-20k detector at INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), several R&D projects were conceived and developed for the creation of a new hybrid material rich in both hydrogen and gadolinium nuclei to be employed as an essential element of the neutron detector. Thanks to its very high cross-section for neutron capture, gadolinium is one of the most widely used elements in neutron detectors, while the hydrogen-rich material is instrumental in efficiently moderating the neutrons. In this paper results from one of the R&Ds are presented. In this effort the new hybrid material was obtained as a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, loaded with gadolinium oxide in the form of nanoparticles. We describe its realization, including all phases of design, purification, construction, characterization, and determination of mechanical properties of the new material.

Abstract

Multiple system atrophy is a form of synucleinopathy with an unknown etiology that causes progressive neurodegeneration. It may affect the cerebellum, autonomic nerves, and pyramidal and extrapyramidal systems. We present the case of a 51-year-old man who was hospitalized for recurrent balance problems and dizziness. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging showed the “hot cross bun” sign of the pons with major atrophy of the cerebellum. The cerebellar form of probable multiple system atrophy was the final diagnosis.

36. Formulating a Novel Physical Equation to Quantify Interocular Visual Acuity Influence

Abstract

The limitation of conventional visual acuity assessment, which primarily focuses on individual eye performance (monocular visual acuity tests). This study addresses this limitation by emphasizing the importance of binocular vision, where both eyes work together. Binocular vision provides numerous advantages, such as improved depth perception, a wider field of view, reduced visual fatigue, and binocular summation. The article introduces a new mathematical model based on the physics of constructive interference in light waves and the anatomy of visual nerves. This model yields an equation that quantifies how weakness in one eye affects the visual acuity of the other. By analyzing the correlation between the rates of visual weakness in each eye and the corresponding distances, utilizing the Snellen 6-meter test, valuable insights are gained into the complex interplay between eye deficiencies and their collective impact on overall visual acuity. The equations derived from this study can have significant implications for eye care professionals, clinicians, and patients, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of visual impairments and enriching the field of optics and vision science.

39. RoCNet: 3D Robust Registration of Point-Clouds using Deep Learning

Abstract

This paper introduces a new method for 3D point cloud registration based on deep learning. The architecture is composed of three distinct blocs: (i) an encoder composed of a convolutional graph-based descriptor that encodes the immediate neighbourhood of each point and an attention mechanism that encodes the variations of the surface normals. Such descriptors are refined by highlighting attention between the points of the same set and then between the points of the two sets. (ii) a matching process that estimates a matrix of correspondences using the Sinkhorn algorithm. (iii) Finally, the rigid transformation between the two point clouds is calculated by RANSAC using the Kc best scores from the correspondence matrix. We conduct experiments on the ModelNet40 dataset, and our proposed architecture shows very promising results, outperforming state-of-the-art methods in most of the simulated configurations, including partial overlap and data augmentation with Gaussian noise., Comment: 8 pages

Abstract

This study focuses on the potential of treated avocado seed to remove azoic organic dyes (basic yellow 28 and tartrazine). The treated avocado seed was characterized, and batch adsorption studies were carried out to evaluate the effects of several removal dye parameters (contact time, ionic strength, initial concentration, adsorbent dose, and temperature). The adsorption kinetics of the dyes examined showed that the adsorption mechanism on the two selected catalysts followed pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 > 0.999). The adsorption process of each dye was reported to fit using five non-linear regressions. Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherms described well the adsorption of basic yellow 28, and Freundlich adsorption isotherms described well the adsorption of tartrazine on the Treated Avocado Seed. The results suggested that the maximum amount adsorbed was 49.30 mg/g for basic yellow 28 and 38.43 mg/g for tartrazine and a high removal rate of 89.93% for BY 28 and 93.22% for tartrazine and that a chemical, spontaneous and endothermic process of adsorption occurred. Boyd’s expression demonstrated a mechanism of film diffusion for adsorption. Based on the findings, we suggest the application of activated avocado seeds for the removal of azoic dyes in aqueous solutions.

Abstract

The powder of treated watermelon seeds (WST), obtained through hexane extraction, has proven to be a promising adsorbent for the environmentally friendly and cost-effective removal of Basic Yellow 28 (BY28) using adsorption techniques. By optimizing conditions through Central Composite Design (CCD), focusing on key factors such as temperature, adsorbent weight, and dye concentration, we aimed to enhance the efficiency of the adsorption process. Our study assessed the accuracy of the model and regression coefficients through analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results revealed a strong agreement between the predicted values derived from the model and the experimental values for BY28, with a coefficient of determination (R2) equal to 0.92, indicating a high level of reliability and effectiveness of the developed model in predicting the adsorption behavior of BY28 on WST. Under optimal conditions, including a temperature of 35°C, an adsorbent weight of 2.45 g/L, and a dye concentration of 50 mg/L, the adsorption process demonstrated exceptional efficiency. This study highlights the remarkable potential of treated watermelon seeds for the removal of organic pollutants, emphasizing the importance of using sustainable and readily available agricultural materials for environmental remediation, thus contributing to both environmental conservation and cost-effectiveness in wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract

Lacertid and amphisbaenian lizards are two squamate reptile lineages very divergent morphologically. In fact, adaptation to burrowing deeply modified amphisbaenian worm-like body. Lacertids instead have a typical reptile morphology with a long tail and four well-developed limbs. Despite so different in appearance, they are evolutionarily very close as evidenced by molecular phylogenetic approaches. Consistently, a slow-evolving satellite DNA (IMO-TaqI) described in lacertid lizards was isolated from the genome of the amphisbaenian Trogonophis wiegmanni too. Comparison with lacertid repeats evidenced great similarity, highlighting that molecular characters appeared very suitable especially when morphology is subjected to strong selective pressures.
