Early-onset sepsis (EOS) remains a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, with significant differences in the incidence and outcome of the disease in Europe. Eastern European countries face particular challenges due to differences in access to healthcare, diagnostic facilities, and prevention strategies. This review summarizes the results of recent research to provide insights into maternal risk factors, regional inequalities in access to healthcare, diagnostic biomarkers, pathogen patterns, and treatment protocols for EOS. This review also examines how healthcare infrastructure and socioeconomic factors influence EOS outcomes in Eastern Europe. Introduction: Early-onset sepsis (EOS) presents a significant health challenge for newborns, characterized by sepsis occurring within the first 72 h of life, primarily caused by the vertical transmission of pathogens from mother to child. Despite advancements in medical care, EOS remains particularly burdensome in resource-poor settings, especially in Eastern Europe, where disparities in healthcare access and maternal health are pronounced. This systematic review aims to provide insights into maternal risk factors, regional inequalities in healthcare access, diagnostic biomarkers, pathogen patterns, and treatment protocols for EOS. Background/Objectives: EOS is increasingly recognized as a public health issue, with outcomes significantly influenced by maternal health, socioeconomic status, and healthcare infrastructure. The review seeks to summarize the existing literature on EOS, particularly focusing on differences between high-income Western and low-resource Eastern European countries. The influence of maternal access to antenatal care, pathogen prevalence, and antibiotic resistance on EOS outcomes across regions will also be examined. Methods: To achieve the review’s objectives, a comprehensive search was conducted across multiple databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Scopus, adhering to PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews. The inclusion criteria encompassed studies published within the last 20 years (January 2004–August 2024) that addressed EOS in late preterm or term infants, emphasizing maternal health, risk factors, diagnostic approaches, and treatment protocols pertinent to European populations. Exclusion criteria included non-English publications and studies lacking a focus on maternal and neonatal health. A total of 29 peer-reviewed articles meeting the specified criteria were ultimately included in the analysis. Results: The findings highlight significant regional disparities in EOS management between Western and Eastern Europe. Key issues include maternal risk factors, socioeconomic barriers to healthcare, diagnostic biomarkers, and pathogen resistance trends. Limited access to prenatal screenings and healthcare infrastructure in Eastern European countries, especially in rural regions in Romania, exacerbate the challenges faced by expectant mothers. Financial burdens, such as high out-of-pocket expenses, were shown to further restrict access to necessary maternal care. Conclusions: This systematic review emphasizes the urgent need for targeted investments in maternal healthcare infrastructure in Eastern Europe to mitigate the impacts of EOS. Enhanced screening programs, standardized surveillance systems, and ensuring equitable health policies are essential to improving neonatal outcomes. Additionally, tailored education and awareness campaigns for disadvantaged groups and comprehensive health policy reforms, including universal antenatal care and Group B Streptococcus (GBS), are essential to bridging healthcare gaps.

The growing concern for environmental sustainability has created an urgent need for the development of innovative and environmentally friendly packaging materials. Among the various options available, clay-starch nanocomposites have emerged as a promising avenue for improving the barrier properties and mechanical strength of paper substrates. In this scientific paper the importance of clay-starch nanocomposite coatings on paper substrate and highlight the role of computer simulations, especially molecular dynamics, in elucidating their structural and functional properties. It has been shown that phyllosilicates with a layer charge < 0.4 electrons per stoichiometric unit can intercalate starch in the interlayer space, forming a barrier for water vapor in the covering layer. Phyllosilicates with a shell charge of > 0.4 electrons per stoichiometric unit were not able to intercalate starch. Thus, clay-starchnanocomposites can provide limited water vapor transfer rates and can be recommended asa promising material for dry food packaging.

The search for renewable biodegradable materials to replace conventional oil-based plastics is a fast-growing research area as it provides an important factor for the sustainable growth of the packaging industry. In this regard, clay-containing composite materials have numerous current and potential commercial applications. However, the interaction between clay and polymer, i.e. Poly(ethylene glycol), is influenced by many factors, such as the nature of the clay, length and nature of the polymer chain, hence, in this work polymer/clay nanocomposite is studied both ex`perimentally and theoretically. Structural and thermodynamic properties of formulated nanocomposites are probed using XRD and TGA techniques and then compared with corresponding values derived from a series of Molecular Dynamics simulations of intercalated polymer/clay nanocomposites. For the first time, the developed potential models were able to predict realistic basal spacing of poly(ethylene glycol)/clay nanocomposite. The simulation also revealed the structure of the interlayer on a molecular level, which greatly benefited the understanding of the formation of polymer/clay coatings. The swelling dynamics, energetics and structure of the clay interlayers are examined. Particular attention is paid to the behaviour of polymer and water when they coexist in the clay interlayer.

Background: In this exploratory study, we aimed to evaluate the dynamics of angiogenic [soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), placental growth factor (PlGF), soluble Endoglin (sEng), and sFlt-1/PlGF, PlGF/sFlt-1, and sEng/PlGF ratios] and oxidative stress [8-epi-prostaglandin F2 alpha (8-epi-PGF2α) and 8-epi-PGF2α/PlGF ratio] mediator levels in women with suspected or confirmed pre-eclampsia (PE) at least two times during pregnancy. We also wanted to identify the possible correlations between 8-epi-PGF2α and angiogenic mediator levels at the time of inclusion of pregnant women. Methods: We included 40 pregnant women with suspected or confirmed PE, with a mean age of 29 years (range between 18 and 41 years) and gestational age between 18 and 28 weeks at inclusion in this study. The Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method to measure the levels of serum angiogenic and oxidative stress mediators was used. Results: The evaluation of baseline sFlt-1/PlGF ratios using a cut-off of 38 suggested that 25 pregnant women had a sFlt-1/PlGF ratio of >38 (sFlt-1/PlGF ratio of >38 group) and 15 had a sFlt-1/PlGF ratio of ≤38 (sFlt-1/PlGF ratio of ≤38 group). The increases in sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio of >38 group were caused by both an increase in sFlt-1 (2.04-fold) and a decrease in PlGF levels (2.55-fold). The 8-epi-PGF2α median levels were higher in the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio of >38 group (1.62-fold). During follow-up after pregnancy, we observed that the mean values of sFlt-1 and sEng and the median values of 8-epi-PGF2α and sFlt-1/PlGF, sEng/PlGF, and 8-epi-PGF2α/PlGF ratios increased directly proportional to gestational age for each measurement time until delivery in both groups. For five women who had a sFlt-1/PlGF ratio ≤38 at inclusion, sFlt-1/PlGF ratio was observed to increase to >38 later in pregnancy. We observed that, in the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio >38 group, baseline 8-epi-PGF2α levels better correlated with angiogenic mediator levels. Conclusions: Our study shows that 33.33% of pregnant women evaluated for suspected or confirmed PE with a sFlt-1/PlGF ratio of ≤38 displayed a rise in sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in subsequent weeks. In addition, together with angiogenic mediators, 8-epi-PGF2 α can be utilized as an independent predictor factor to help clinicians identify or predict which pregnant women will develop PE.

Experimental results on the bis[(μ2-etoxi)(benzoyl trifluoroacetonato)(nitrato)(1,10-phenantroline)europium(III)]1,10-phenantroline europium(III) coordination complex (hereafter, [Eu(μ2-OC2H5)(btfa)(NO3)(phen)]2·phen) are described. The complex is characterized by photoluminescence (PL) and infrared spectroscopy. Photoluminescence spectra of the complex exhibit strong emission with specific narrow emission bands associated with the 5D0→7Fj (j = 0–4) transitions. The pattern of emission band splitting and the luminescence time decay suggest the presence of at least two different sites of the Eu3+ ion in a low-symmetry environment. The absolute PL quantum yield of the complex is determined to be 49.2%.Sunt prezentate rezultate experimentale pentru complexul coordinativ al europiului III) - [Eu(μ2-OC2H5)(btfa)(NO3)(phen)]2phen. Complexul a fost caracterizat prin spectroscopia de fotoluminescență și spectroscopia în infraroșu. Spectrele de fotoluminescență ale complexului reprezintă benzi de emisie puternice asociate cu tranzițiile 5D0→7Fj (j=0-4). Caracterul despicării benzilor de emisie, cât şi timpul de relaxare al luminescenței indică prezența a cel puțin două site-uri diferite ale ionului Eu3+ în mediu cu simetrie redusă. A fost determinat randamentul cuantic absolut al complexului de 49,2%.

Materials based on small molecules characterized by multi‐component short and long‐lived emissive behaviour are extremely desirable for various applications. The derivative of cyclic triimidazole (TT) functionalized with a carboxylic group, namely TT‐COOH, is isolated, investigated and used as coordinative ligand to obtain a series of isomorphous mononuclear complexes of general formula [M(TT‐COO)2(H2O)2] (M=Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II)). Crystals of TT‐COOH display aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) comprising dual fluorescence and dual phosphorescence of molecular origin together with an aggregation induced long lived, low energy phosphorescence. Emissive features are retained in crystals of the Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes, where the metal plays the role of an external heavy atom perturber, but strongly quenched in the others. The mechanisms involved in the photophysics of TT‐COOH and its metal complexes have been disclosed thanks to combined structural, spectroscopic and computational investigations which reveal the presence of anti‐Kasha emissions. A high-luminescent, blue-light excitable europium(III) coordination complex, [Eu(µ2-OC2H5)(btfa)(NO3)(phen)]2phen (1) {btfa = benzoyl trifluoroacetone, phen = 1,10-phenantroline}, has been synthesized and investigated. The complex was characterized by infrared (IR) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The PL emission spectra of powder samples registered in a range of 10.7–300 K exhibit characteristic metal-centered luminescence bands, assigned to internal radiative transitions of the Eu3+ ion, 5D1→7Fj and 5D0→7Fj (j = 0–4). The high-resolution spectrum of the transition 5D0→7F0 shows that it consists of two narrow components, separated by 0.96 meV, which indicates the presence in the matrix of two different sites of the Eu3+ ion. The splitting pattern of 5D0→7Fj (j = 0–4) transitions indicates that europium ions are located in a low-symmetry environment. The absolute quantum yield and the sensitization efficiency were determined to be 49.2% and 89.3%, respectively. The complex can be excited with low-cost lasers at around 405 nm and is attractive for potential applications in optoelectronics and biochemistry.

The optical and luminescent properties of undoped La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14 lanthanum- gallium tantalate crystals grown in different atmospheres of pure argon gas and argon gas with different oxygen percentages have been studied. The optical absorption α(λ) spectra that characterize integral absorption and reflection have been measured in the 250–700 nm region. The spectral absorption functions have been calculated from the measured α(λ) spectra using the Kubelka–Munk formula. Luminescence has been observed in all the test specimens over a wide spectral region (375 to 650 nm) at 95 and 300 K. The luminescence spectra of the test crystals have a fine dispersed pattern represented by low-intensity discrete luminescence peaks. The 95 K luminescence peak maxima are more pronounced and shifted towards shorter wavelengths by ~16 nm (~0.1 eV) relative to the respective room temperature peaks. The crystal growth atmosphere has been demonstrated to largely affect the luminescent properties of the crystals: the higher the oxygen concentration in the growth atmosphere, the lower the luminescence intensity due to concentration quenching, the luminescence peak maxima shifting towards longer wavelengths. The positions of discrete luminescence peaks have been shown to correlate with the main 420 and 480 nm absorption bands with the respective ~20 nm (~0.2 eV) Stokes shift for crystals grown in different atmospheres. The luminescence in lanthanum-gallium tantalate crystals is a complex process involving several luminescence mechanisms.

A new two dimensional 2,2′-bipyridine-4,4′-dicarboxylate Zn(II) coordination polymer was obtained by hydrothermal synthesis and characterized by IR spectrum and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal lattice hosts the N,N-dimethylformamide and water solvent molecules. The new material reveals blue-orange luminescence upon excitation with ultraviolet light.

New supramolecular systems of Ni(II) and Cd(II) with 1,10-phenanthroline constructed by non-covalent interactions have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. The smaller nickel(II) ion forms a cis complex with outer-sphere perchlorates, while the cadmium(II) ion forms a trans complex involving inner-sphere perchlorates. Eight mixed-ligand coordination networks, [Cd(2-aba)(NO3)(4-bphz)3/2]n·n(dmf) (1), [Cd(2-aba)2(4-bphz)]n·0.75n(dmf) (2), [Cd(seb)(4-bphz)]n·n(H2O) (3), [Cd(seb)(4-bpmhz)]n·n(H2O) (4), [Cd(hpa)(3-bphz)]n (5), [Zn(1,3-bdc)(3-bpmhz)]n·n(MeOH) (6), [Cd(1,3-bdc)(3-bpmhz)]n ·0.5n(H2O)·0.5n(EtOH) (7), and [Cd(NO3)2(3-bphz)(bpe)]n·n(3-bphz) (8) were obtained by interplay of cadmium nitrate tetrahydrate or zinc nitrate hexahydrate with 2-aminobenzenecarboxylic acid (H(2-aba)), three dicarboxylic acids, sebacic (decanedioic acid, H2seb), homophthalic (2-(carboxymethyl)benzoic acid, H2hpa), isophthalic (1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid, H2(1,3-bdc)) acids, bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe) and with four azine ligands, 1,2-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethylene)hydrazine (4-bphz), 1,2-bis(1-(pyridin-4-yl)ethylidene) hydrazine (4-bpmhz), 1,2-bis(pyridin-3-ylmethylene)hydrazine (3-bphz), and 1,2-bis(1-(pyridin-3-yl) ethylidene)hydrazine (3-bpmhz). Compounds 1 and 2 are 1D coordination polymers, while compounds 3–8 are 2D coordination polymers. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction methods of analysis. The solvent uptakes and stabilities to the guest evacuation were studied and compared for 1D and 2D coordination networks. The de-solvated forms revealed a significant increase of emission in comparison with the as-synthesized crystals.
