The operation of a conventional superconducting flux qubit requires the application of a precisely tuned magnetic field to set the operation point at half a flux quantum through the qubit loop, which makes the scaling of quantum circuits based on this type of qubits difficult. It has been proposed that, by inducing a pi phase shift in the superconducting order parameter using a precisely controlled nanoscale-thickness superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor Josephson junction, commonly referred to as pi-junction, it is possible to realize a flux qubit operating at zero magnetic flux. We report the realization of a zero-flux-biased flux qubit based on three NbN/AlN/NbN Josephson junctions and a NbN/PdNi/NbN ferromagnetic pi-junction. The qubit lifetime is in the microsecond range, which we argue is limited by quasiparticle excitations in the metallic ferromagnet layer. With further improvements in the materials of the ferromagnetic junction, the zero-flux-biased flux qubits can become a promising platform for quantum computing., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

We use a random search technique to find quantum gate sequences that implement perfect quantum state preparation or unitary operator synthesis with arbitrary targets. This approach is based on the recent discovery that there is a large multiplicity of quantum circuits that achieve unit fidelity in performing a given target operation, even at the minimum number of single-qubit and two-qubit gates needed to achieve unit fidelity. We show that the fraction of perfect-fidelity quantum circuits increases rapidly as soon as the circuit size exceeds the minimum circuit size required for achieving unit fidelity. This result implies that near-optimal quantum circuits for a variety of quantum information processing tasks can be identified relatively easily by trying only a few randomly chosen quantum circuits and optimizing their parameters. In addition to analyzing the case where the CNOT gate is the elementary two-qubit gate, we consider the possibility of using alternative two-qubit gates. In particular, we analyze the case where the two-qubit gate is the B gate, which is known to reduce the minimum quantum circuit size for two-qubit operations. We perform theoretical calculations to investigate the naturally occurring high-frequency cutoff in a circuit comprising a flux qubit coupled inductively to a transmission line resonator (TLR). Specifically, a decoupling occurs between the qubit and the high-frequency modes. The coupling strength between the qubit and resonator modes increases with mode frequency $\omega$ as $\sqrt{\omega}$ at low frequencies and decreases as $1/\sqrt{\omega}$ at high frequencies. This result is similar to those of past studies that considered somewhat similar circuit designs. By avoiding the approximation of ignoring the qubit-TLR coupling in certain steps in the analysis, we obtain effects not captured in previous studies. In particular, we obtain a resonance effect that shifts the TLR mode frequencies close to qubit oscillation frequencies. We derive expressions for the TLR mode frequencies, qubit-TLR coupling strengths and qubit Lamb shift. Ring-shaped REBa2Cu3Oy melt-textured bulks have been successfully grown by the Single-Direction Melt Growth (SDMG) method, which enables the direct fabrication of uniform bulks with high reproducibility. Three homogeneous DyBa2Cu3Oy ring-bulks with various sizes were synthesized in this study. All of these bulks exhibited concentrically cone-shaped trapped field distribution on the surface and high trapped field more than 1.8 T at 77 K inside the ring, the highest among bulks of comparable size to date. Furthermore, superconducting properties such as superconducting transitions and critical current densities are highly uniform throughout the bulk, confirming the effectiveness of the SDMG approach. We investigate the dynamics of a qubit-oscillator system under the influence of a linear sweep of system parameters. We consider two main cases. In the first case, we consider sweeping the parameters between the regime of a weakly correlated ground state and the regime of a strongly correlated ground state, a situation that can be viewed as a finite-duration quench between two phases of matter: the normal phase and the superradiant phase. Excitations are created as a result of this quench. We investigate the dependence of the excitation probabilities on the various parameters. We find a qualitative asymmetry in the dynamics between the cases of a normal-to-superradiant and superradiant-to-normal quench. The second case of parameter sweeps that we investigate is the problem of a Landau-Zener sweep in the qubit bias term for a qubit coupled to a harmonic oscillator. We analyze a theoretical formula based on the assumption that the dynamics can be decomposed into a sequence of independent Landau-Zener transitions. In addition to establishing the conditions of validity for the theoretical formula, we find that under suitable conditions, deterministic and robust multi-photon state preparation is possible in this system., Comment: 27 pages (preprint), 7 figures

We report experimental and theoretical results on the extremely large Lamb shift in a multimode circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) system in the deep-strong coupling (DSC) regime, where the qubit-resonator coupling strength is comparable to or larger than the qubit and resonator frequencies. The system comprises a superconducting flux qubit (FQ) and a quarter-wavelength coplanar waveguide resonator ($\lambda/4$ CPWR) that are coupled inductively through a shared edge that contains a Josephson junction to achieve the DSC regime. Spectroscopy is performed around the frequency of the fundamental mode of the CPWR, and the spectrum is fitted by the single-mode quantum Rabi Hamiltonian to obtain the system parameters. Since the qubit is also coupled to a large number of higher modes in the resonator, the single-mode fitting does not provide the bare qubit energy but a value that incorporates the renormalization from all the other modes. We derive theoretical formulas for the Lamb shift in the multimode resonator system. As shown in previous studies, there is a cut-off frequency $\omega_{\rm{cutoff}}$ for the coupling between the FQ and the modes in the CPWR, where the coupling grows as $\sqrt{\omega_n}$ for $\omega_n/\omega_{\rm{cutoff}}\ll 1$ and decreases as $1/\sqrt{\omega_n}$ for $\omega_n/\omega_{\rm{cutoff}}\gg 1$. Here $\omega_n$ is the frequency of the $n$th mode. The cut-off effect occurs because the qubit acts as an obstacle for the current in the resonator, which suppresses the current of the modes above $\omega_{\rm{cutoff}}$ at the location of the qubit and results in a reduced coupling strength. Using our observed spectrum and theoretical formulas, we estimate that the Lamb shift from the fundamental mode is 82.3\% and the total Lamb shift from all the modes is 96.5\%., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

The Sz\'asz-Mirakyan operator is known as a positive linear operator which uniformly approximates a certain class of continuous functions on the half line. The purpose of the present paper is to find out limiting behaviors of the iterates of the Sz\'asz-Mirakyan operator in a probabilistic point of view. We show that the iterates of the Sz\'asz-Mirakyan operator uniformly converges to a continuous semigroup generated by a second order degenerate differential operator. A probabilistic interpretation of the convergence in terms of a discrete Markov chain constructed from the iterates and a limiting diffusion process on the half line is captured as well., Comment: 17 pages

We perform optimal-control-theory calculations to determine the minimum number of two-qubit CNOT gates needed to perform quantum state preparation and unitary operator synthesis for few-qubit systems. By considering all possible gate configurations, we determine the maximum achievable fidelity as a function of quantum circuit size. This information allows us to identify the minimum circuit size needed for a specific target operation and enumerate the different gate configurations that allow a perfect implementation of the operation. We find that there are a large number of configurations that all produce the desired result, even at the minimum number of gates. We also show that the number of entangling gates can be reduced if we use multi-qubit entangling gates instead of two-qubit CNOT gates, as one might expect based on parameter counting calculations. In addition to treating the general case of arbitrary target states or unitary operators, we apply the numerical approach to the special case of synthesizing the multi-qubit Toffoli gate. In ultra- and deep-strong cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) systems, many intriguing phenomena that do not conserve the excitation number are expected to occur. In this study, we theoretically analyze the optical response of an ultrastrong cavity-QED system in which an atom is coupled to the fundamental and third harmonic modes of a cavity, and report the possibility of deterministic three-photon down-conversion of itinerant photons upon reflection at the cavity. In the conventional parametric down-conversion, a strong input field is needed because of the smallness of the transition matrix elements of the higher order processes. However, if we use an atom-cavity system in an unprecedentedly strong-coupling region, even a weak field in the linear-response regime is sufficient to cause this rare event involving the fourth order transitions., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

We consider the implementation of two-qubit gates when the physical systems used to realize the qubits possess additional quantum states in the accessible energy range. We use optimal control theory to determine the maximum achievable gate speed for two-qubit gates in the qubit subspace of the many-level Hilbert space, and we analyze the effect of the additional quantum states on the gate speed. We identify two competing mechanisms. On one hand, higher energy levels are generally more strongly coupled to each other. Under suitable conditions, this stronger coupling can be utilized to make two-qubit gates significantly faster than the reference value based on simple qubits. On the other hand, a weak anharmonicity constrains the speed at which the system can be adequately controlled: according to the intuitive picture, faster operations require stronger control fields, which are more likely to excite higher levels in a weakly anharmonic system, which in turn leads to faster decoherence and uncontrolled leakage outside the qubit space. In order to account for this constraint, we modify the pulse optimization algorithm to avoid pulses that lead to appreciable population of the higher levels. In this case we find that the presence of the higher levels can lead to a significant reduction in the maximum achievable gate speed. We also compare the optimal-control gate speeds with those obtained using the cross-resonance/selective-darkening gate protocol. We find that the latter, with some parameter optimization, can be used to achieve a relatively fast implementation of the CNOT gate. These results can help the search for optimized gate implementations in realistic quantum computing architectures, such as those based on superconducting circuits.
