Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics ,Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies ,Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. We also highlight the main science objectives and expected performance., Comment: Accepted for publication in the A&A special issue`Euclid on Sky'

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies ,Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Starburst galaxies are undergoing intense episodes of star formation. In these galaxies, gas is ejected into the surrounding environment through winds created by the effect of hot stars and supernova explosions. When interacting with the intergalactic medium, these winds can produce strong shocks capable of accelerating cosmic rays. The radiation from these cosmic rays mainly occurs in radio and gamma rays. The radio halo can be characterized using the scale height. We searched for the presence of radio halos in a sample of edge-on starburst galaxies gathered from the MeerKAT 1.28 GHz Atlas of Southern Sources in the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample. We selected a sample of 25 edge-on galaxies from the original sample and modeled their disk and halo contributions. We have detected and characterized 11 radio halos, seven of which are reported here for the first time. We found that the halo scale heights increase linearly with the radio diameters and this relation does not depend on the star formation rate. All galaxies in our sample follow the radio-infrared relation with a q parameter value of $2.5\pm0.1$. The dependence of the halo luminosity on the star formation rate and the infrared luminosity supports the hypothesis that the radio halos are the result of synchrotron radiation produced by relativistic electrons and points toward the fact that the star formation activity plays a crucial role in halo creation. The average scale height of 1 kpc implies a dynamical range of 4 Myr, several orders of magnitude greater than the synchrotron losses for electrons of 10 TeV. This suggests that some process must exist to reaccelerate cosmic rays in the halo if gamma-ray emission of a leptonic origin is detected from the halo. According to the relation between the radio and gamma-ray luminosities, we found that NGC 4666 is a potential gamma-ray source for future observations., Comment: 21 pages, 5 tables, 8 figures. ObjectiveTo evaluate differences based on intrauterine device (IUD) frame geometry in force, and stress, and strain at the stem/arms junction during simulated IUD removal.Study designWe manufactured injection-molded frame models for three Nova-T IUDs (Mirena [model M]; Liletta [model L]; Kyleena [model K]) and a Tatum-T IUD (Paragard [model P]) at two-times scaling. We created a custom fixture to simulate the uterus and used a screw-driven machine to pull models at various displacement rates through the 10 cm fixture cavity to measure force and strain and calculate stress at the IUD stem/arms junction. We tested models at 30 mm/min and higher displacement rates for exploratory analyses. We used Mann-Whitney U test for statistical testing.ResultsWe completed testing at 30 mm/min using five of each Nova-T model and nine model P samples. Resistance against the cavity walls created significantly more force on model P (11.83, interquartile range [IQR] 11.61-12.31) than any Nova-T model samples (p

As recently demonstrated, Deep Neural Networks (DNN), usually trained using single precision IEEE 754 floating point numbers (binary32), can also work using lower precision. Therefore, 16-bit and 8-bit compressed format have attracted considerable attention. In this paper, we focused on two families of formats that have already achieved interesting results in compressing binary32 numbers in machine learning applications, without sensible degradation of the accuracy: bfloat and posit. Even if 16-bit and 8-bit bfloat/posit are routinely used for reducing the storage of the weights/biases of trained DNNs, the inference still often happens on the 32-bit FPU of the CPU (especially if GPUs are not available). In this paper we propose a way to decompress a tensor of bfloat/posits just before computations, i.e., after the compressed operands have been loaded within the vector registers of a vector capable CPU, in order to save bandwidth usage and increase cache efficiency. Finally, we show the architectural parameters and considerations under which this solution is advantageous with respect to the uncompressed one.

By exploiting the modular RISC-V ISA this paper presents the customization of instruction set with posit\textsuperscript{\texttrademark} arithmetic instructions to provide improved numerical accuracy, well-defined behavior and increased range of representable numbers while keeping the flexibility and benefits of open-source ISA, like no licensing and royalty fee and community development. In this work we present the design, implementation and integration into the low-power Ibex RISC-V core of a full posit processing unit capable to directly implement in hardware the four arithmetic operations (add, sub, mul, div and fma), the inversion, the float-to-posit and posit-to-float conversions. We evaluate speed, power and area of this unit (that we have called Full Posit Processing Unit). The FPPU has been prototyped on Alveo and Kintex FPGAs, and its impact on the metrics of the full-RISC-V core have been evaluated, showing that we can provide real number processing capabilities to the mentioned core with an increase in area limited to $7\%$ for 8-bit posits and to $15\%$ for 16-bit posits. Finally we present tests one the use of posits for deep neural networks with different network models and datasets, showing minimal drop in accuracy when using 16-bit posits instead of 32-bit IEEE floats.

PURPOSE: Compared with people living without HIV (PWOH), people living with HIV (PWH) and cancer have traditionally been excluded from immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) trials. Furthermore, there is a paucity of real-world data on the use of ICIs in PWH and cancer. METHODS: This retrospective study included PWH treated with anti-PD-1- or anti-PD-L1-based therapies for advanced cancers. Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Objective response rates (ORRs) were measured per RECIST 1.1 or other tumor-specific criteria, whenever feasible. Restricted mean survival time (RMST) was used to compare OS and PFS between matched PWH and PWOH with metastatic NSCLC (mNSCLC). RESULTS: Among 390 PWH, median age was 58 years, 85% (n = 331) were males, 36% (n = 138) were Black; 70% (n = 274) received anti-PD-1/anti-PD-L1 monotherapy. Most common cancers were NSCLC (28%, n = 111), hepatocellular carcinoma ([HCC]; 11%, n = 44), and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC; 10%, n = 39). Seventy percent (152/216) had CD4+ T cell counts ≥200 cells/µL, and 94% (179/190) had HIV viral load

This article presents an analysis from the perspective of a participant-observer in the "Rethinking DF 2030" project, conducted in Brazil. In this project, Theory U was applied as a journey to foster integration between policymakers and the citizens for whom these policies are designed. The article sheds light on the importance of building both hidden and visible "containers"—purposefully held environments where the quality of collective attention aligns with intention. Through the author's active engagement in this project, the article simultaneously explores the methodological and experiential aspects of Theory U, including its capacity to guide and weave into the application of various other methodologies. The findings highlight both the challenges and potential of a Theory U practitioner's role in a highly complex participatory process.

Cisplatin resistance ,ruthenium-cyclopentadienyl ,non-small cell lung cancer ,biocompatibility ,cardiovascular toxicity ,Therapeutics. Pharmacology ,RM1-950 - Abstract
The therapeutic approach to many solid tumors, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), is mainly based on the use of platinum-containing anticancer agents and is often characterized by acquired or intrinsic resistance to the drug. Therefore, the search for safer and more effective drugs is still an open challenge. Two organometallic ruthenium(II)-cyclopentadienyl compounds [Ru(η5-C5H4CHO)(Me2bipy)(PPh3)]+ (RT150) and [Ru(η5-C5H4CH2OH)(Me2bipy)(PPh3)][CF3SO3] (RT151) were tested against a panel of cisplatin-resistant NSCLC cell lines and xenografts. They were more effective than cisplatin in inducing oxidative stress and DNA damage, affecting the cell cycle and causing apoptosis. Importantly, they were found to be inhibitors of drug efflux transporters. Due to this property, the compounds significantly increased the retention and cytotoxicity of cisplatin within NSCLC cells. Notably, they did not display high toxicity in vitro against non-transformed cells (red blood cells, fibroblasts, bronchial epithelial cells, cardiomyocytes, and endothelial cells). Both compounds induced vasorelaxation and reduced endothelial cell migration, suggesting potential anti-angiogenic properties. RT151 confirmed its efficacy against NSCLC xenografts resistant to cisplatin. Either alone or combined with low doses of cisplatin, RT151 showed a good biodistribution profile in the liver, kidney, spleen, lung, and tumor. Hematochemical analysis and post-mortem organ pathology confirmed the safety of the compound in vivo, also when combined with cisplatin. To sum up, we have confirmed the effectiveness of a novel class of drugs against cisplatin-resistant NSCLC. Additionally, the compounds have a good biocompatibility and safety profile.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Context. The gamma-ray emitting source WISE J141046.00+740511.2 has been associated with a Fermi-LAT detection by crossmatching with Swift/XRT data. It has shown all the canonical observational characteristics of a BL Lac source, including a power-law, featureless optical spectrum. However, it was only recently detected at radio frequencies and its radio flux is significantly low. Aims. Given that a radio detection is fundamental to associate lower-energy counterparts to Fermi-LAT sources, we aim to unambiguously classify this source by performing a multiwavelength analysis based on contemporaneous data. Methods. By using multifrequency observations at the Jansky Very Large Array, Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, Gran Telescopio Canarias, Gemini, William Herschel Telescope and Liverpool observatories, together with Fermi-LAT and Swift data, we carried out two kinds of analyses. On one hand, we studied several known parameters that account for the radio loudness or weakness characterization and their application to blazars (in general) and to our source (in particular). And, on the other hand, we built and analyzed the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) of this source to try to explain its peculiar characteristics. Results. The multiwavelength analysis indicates that WISE J141046.00+740511.2 is a blazar of the high-frequency peaked (HBL) type that emits highly polarized light and that is likely located at a low redshift. In addition, the one-zone model parameters that best fit its SED are those of an extreme HBL (EHBL); this blazar type has been extensively predicted in theory to be lacking in the radio emission that is otherwise typical of canonical gamma-ray blazars. Conclusions. We confirm that WISE J141046.00+740511.2 is indeed a highly polarized BL Lac of the HBL type. Further studies will be conducted to explain the atypical low radio flux detected for this source., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, in press

Abstract The article describes an innovative methodology for the design and experimental validation of monitoring and anomaly detection algorithms, with a particular focus on the aging phenomenon, linked to the anomalous modification of the Rds(on), in devices switching in power electronic systems integrated into modern high‐performance electrified vehicles. The case study concerns an electric drive for fully electrified vehicles, in which a three‐phase axial flux synchronous motor integrated into a wheel motor (Elaphe) is used and in which a high‐efficiency three‐phase inverter, designed with SiC technology (silicon carbide). The article proposes the design and validation of the innovative aging monitoring and detection system, in four consecutive phases. The first phase involves the creation of a real‐time model of electric drive, validated through experimental data extrapolated directly during a WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure) test. The second phase consists of the creation of a virtual dataset representative of the aging phenomenon, via an anomaly injection procedure, emulating this phenomenon with a scaling factor (depending on the value of the Rds(on)) on the current phase of the motor, relating to the inverter branch whose SiC device is affected. The third phase concerns the design of an estimator of the Rds(on), based on an ANN (Artificial Neural Network) regression model, and involves a data manipulation phase with features extraction and reduction techniques. The fourth and final phase, involves the experimental validation of the method, through PIL (Processor‐In‐the‐Loop) tests, integrating the monitoring algorithm (consisting of a real‐time model and AI‐based regression model) on the NXPs32k144 embedded platform (based on Cortex‐M4), making the algorithm interact with the electric drive model on which anomaly injection is applied.

COVID-19 is a disease caused by severe respiratory syndrome coronavirus. It was identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. It has resulted in an ongoing pandemic that caused infected cases including some deaths. Coronavirus is primarily spread between people during close contact. Motivating to this notion, this research proposes an artificial intelligence system for social distancing classification of persons by using thermal images. By exploiting YOLOv2 (you look at once), a deep learning detection technique is developed for detecting and tracking people in indoor and outdoor scenarios. An algorithm is also implemented for measuring and classifying the distance between persons and automatically check if social distancing rules are respected or not. Hence, this work aims at minimizing the spread of the COVID-19 virus by evaluating if and how persons comply with social distancing rules. The proposed approach is applied to images acquired through thermal cameras, to establish a complete AI system for people tracking, social distancing classification, and body temperature monitoring. The training phase is done with two datasets captured from different thermal cameras. Ground Truth Labeler app is used for labeling the persons in the images. The achieved results show that the proposed method is suitable for the creation of a smart surveillance system in smart cities for people detection, social distancing classification, and body temperature analysis., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures , conference (ICT for Smart Cities)

The development of novel materials with improved radiation shielding capability is a fundamental step towards the optimization of passive radiation countermeasures. Polyethylene (PE) nanocomposites filled with carbon nanotubes (CNT) or graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) can be a good compromise for maintaining the radiation shielding properties of the hydrogen-rich polymer while endowing the material with multifunctional properties. In this work, nanocomposite materials based on medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) loaded with different amounts of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), GNPs, and hybrid MWCNT/GNP nanofillers were fabricated, and their properties were examined before and after proton exposure. The effects of irradiation were evaluated in terms of modifications in the chemical and physical structure, wettability, and surface morphology of the nanocomposites. The aim of this work was to define and compare the MDPE-based nanocomposite behavior under proton irradiation in order to establish the best system for applications as space shielding materials.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant tumour in white populations. Multiple studies demonstrated that the aberrant activation of Hedgehog signaling is a driver of BCC development, and its blockade represents a potential therapeutic target. In Italy, clinicians can prescribe Hedgehog inhibitors (HhIs) Vismodegib and Sonidegib. To highlight the treatment choice of clinicians, we conducted an online survey between November 1 and November 18, 2020 with 33 Italian clinicians from 27 reference hospitals, in which each participant received an anonymous survey consisting of two multiple-choice questions on clinical efficacy and safety profile of Sonidegib and Vismodegib. Respondents reported their opinions on which efficacy and tolerability data of the pivotal phase-II BOLT trial were more relevant in the treatment choice of patients with locally advanced BCC (laBCC). This survey shows that overall response rate (ORR) and the duration of response (DoR) are the most expected across dermatologists and oncologists. The different pharmacokinetic profile of the two HhIs are behind their diverse toxicity spectrum, dose and schedule modification seem to address the choice between vismodegib and sonidegib among dermato-oncology prescribers.

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
Pose estimation of an uncooperative space resident object is a key asset towards autonomy in close proximity operations. In this context monocular cameras are a valuable solution because of their low system requirements. However, the associated image processing algorithms are either too computationally expensive for real time on-board implementation, or not enough accurate. In this paper we propose a pose estimation software exploiting neural network architectures which can be scaled to different accuracy-latency trade-offs. We designed our pipeline to be compatible with Edge Tensor Processing Units to show how low power machine learning accelerators could enable Artificial Intelligence exploitation in space. The neural networks were tested both on the benchmark Spacecraft Pose Estimation Dataset, and on the purposely developed Cosmo Photorealistic Dataset, which depicts a COSMO-SkyMed satellite in a variety of random poses and steerable solar panels orientations. The lightest version of our architecture achieves state-of-the-art accuracy on both datasets but at a fraction of networks complexity, running at 7.7 frames per second on a Coral Dev Board Mini consuming just 2.2W., Comment: Improved literature review; added Figure 2; revised tables for better readibility; corrected typos

The luxury yacht market is increasingly driven by a demand for sustainability, emphasizing the need for enhanced monitoring and optimization of energy consumption, particularly in the yacht’s hotel sector. To address this demand, we propose a novel system that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin (DT) technologies. This system integrates various network-connected sensors, smart plugs, and actuators, such as HVAC systems, lighting, and automated blinds, and is orchestrated by an advanced AI algorithm. Given the challenge of limited experimental data on energy consumption and passenger habits, our approach involves the development of a modular digital twin of the yacht. This DT enables the simulation of different configurations and operational scenarios, generating substantial virtual data for training AI models. Specifically, we employ a Long-Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network for time series analysis, which predicts future consumption based on current usage patterns and passenger behavior. This methodology offers a general framework applicable to various yacht designs, enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency across the industry.
