Abstract

Abstract The H1 Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable $$\tau _1^b$$ τ 1 b in neutral-current deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). The observable $$\tau _1^b$$ τ 1 b is equivalent to a thrust observable defined in the Breit frame. The data sample was collected at the HERA ep collider in the years 2003–2007 with center-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s}=319\,\textrm{GeV} $$ s = 319 GeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 $$\textrm{pb}^{-1}$$ pb - 1 . Triple differential cross sections are provided as a function of $$\tau _1^b$$ τ 1 b , event virtuality $$Q^{2}$$ Q 2 , and inelasticity y, in the kinematic region $$Q^{2} >150\,\textrm{GeV}^2 $$ Q 2 > 150 GeV 2 . Single differential cross sections are provided as a function of $$\tau _1^b$$ τ 1 b in a limited kinematic range. Double differential cross sections are measured, in contrast, integrated over $$\tau _1^b$$ τ 1 b and represent the inclusive neutral-current DIS cross section measured as a function of $$Q^{2}$$ Q 2 and y. The data are compared to a variety of predictions and include long-standing and more recent Monte Carlo event generators, predictions in fixed-order perturbative QCD where calculations up to $$\mathcal {O}(\alpha _\textrm{s} ^3)$$ O ( α s 3 ) are available for $$\tau _1^b$$ τ 1 b or inclusive DIS, and resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed order predictions at $$\mathcal {O}(\alpha _\textrm{s} ^2)$$ O ( α s 2 ) . These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. Monte Carlo event generators are predictive over the full measured range and hence their underlying models and parameters can be constrained by comparing to the presented data.

Abstract

Abstract The Breit frame provides a natural frame to analyze lepton–proton scattering events. In this reference frame, the parton model hard interactions between a quark and an exchanged boson defines the coordinate system such that the struck quark is back-scattered along the virtual photon momentum direction. In Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), higher order perturbative or non-perturbative effects can change this picture drastically. As Bjorken-x decreases below one half, a rather peculiar event signature is predicted with increasing probability, where no radiation is present in one of the two Breit-frame hemispheres and all emissions are to be found in the other hemisphere. At higher orders in $$\alpha _{s}$$ α s or in the presence of soft QCD effects, predictions of the rate of these events are far from trivial, and that motivates measurements with real data. We report on the first observation of the empty current hemisphere events in electron–proton collisions at the HERA collider using data recorded with the H1 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 319 GeV. The fraction of inclusive neutral-current DIS events with an empty hemisphere is found to be $$0.0112 \pm 3.9\%_\text {stat} \pm 4.5\%_{\text {syst}} \pm 1.6\%_{\text {mod}}$$ 0.0112 ± 3.9 % stat ± 4.5 % syst ± 1.6 % mod in the selected kinematic region of $$150

Abstract

The radiation pattern within high energy quark- and gluon-initiated jets (jet substructure) is used extensively as a precision probe of the strong force as well as an environment for optimizing event generators with numerous applications in high energy particle and nuclear physics. Looking at electron-proton collisions is of particular interest as many of the complications present at hadron colliders are absent. A detailed study of modern jet substructure observables, jet angularities, in electron-proton collisions is presented using data recorded using the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is unbinned and multi-dimensional, using machine learning to correct for detector effects. All of the available reconstructed object information of the respective jets is interpreted by a graph neural network, achieving superior precision on a selected set of jet angularities. Training these networks was enabled by the use of a large number of GPUs in the Perlmutter supercomputer at Berkeley Lab. The particle jets are reconstructed in the laboratory frame, using the kT jet clustering algorithm. Results are reported at high transverse momentum transfer Q2>150GeV2, and inelasticity 0.2

Abstract

Abstract The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic ep scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. A perturbative QCD fit, simultaneously of $$\alpha _s(M_Z^2)$$ α s ( M Z 2 ) and the PDFs, was performed with the result $$\alpha _s(M_Z^2)= 0.1156 \pm 0.0011~\mathrm{(exp)}~ ^{+0.0001}_{-0.0002}~ \mathrm{(model}$$ α s ( M Z 2 ) = 0.1156 ± 0.0011 ( exp ) - 0.0002 + 0.0001 ( model $$\mathrm{+ parameterisation)}~ \pm 0.0029~\mathrm{(scale)}$$ + parameterisation ) ± 0.0029 ( scale ) . The PDF sets of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO were determined with separate fits using two fixed values of $$\alpha _s(M_Z^2)$$ α s ( M Z 2 ) , $$\alpha _s(M_Z^2)=0.1155$$ α s ( M Z 2 ) = 0.1155 and 0.118, since the latter value was already chosen for the published HERAPDF2.0 NNLO analysis based on HERA inclusive DIS data only. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input.

5. Experimental characterization of a single-shot spectrometer for high-flux, GeV-scale gamma-ray beams

Abstract

We report on the first experimental characterization of a gamma-ray spectrometer designed to spectrally resolve high-flux photon beams with energies in the GeV range. The spectrometer has been experimentally characterized using a bremsstrahlung source obtained at the Apollon laser facility during the interaction of laser-wakefield accelerated electron beams (maximum energy of 1.7 GeV and overall charge of 207±62 pC) with a 1 mm thick tantalum target. Experimental data confirms the possibility of performing single-shot measurements, without the need for accumulation, with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Scaling the results to photons in the multi-GeV range suggests the possibility of achieving percent-level energy resolution as required, for instance, by the next generation of experiments in strong-field quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract

The optimization and advanced study of a laser-plasma electron injector are presented based on a truncated ionization injection scheme for high quality beam production. The smilei code is used with laser envelope approximation and a low number of particles per cell to reach computation time performances enabling the production of a large number of accelerator configurations. The developed and tested workflow is a possible approach for the production of a large dataset for laser-plasma accelerator optimization. A selection of functions of merit used to grade generated electron beams is discussed. Among the significant number of configurations, two specific working points are presented in detail. All data generated are left open to the scientific community for further study and optimization.

Abstract

The design of absorbing boundary conditions (ABC) in a numerical simulation is a challenging task. In the best cases, spurious reflections remain for some angles of incidence or at certain wave lengths. In the worst, ABC are not even possible for the set of equations and/or numerical schemes used in the simulation and reflections can not be avoided at all. Perflectly Matched Layer (PML) are layers of absorbing medium which can be added at the simulation edges in order to significantly damp both outgoing and reflected waves, thus effectively playing the role of an ABC. They are able to absorb waves and prevent reflections for all angles and frequencies at a modest computational cost. It increases the simulation accuracy and negates the need of oversizing the simulation usually imposed by ABC and leading to a waste of computational resources and power. PML for finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) schemes in Particle-In-cell (PIC) codes are presented for both Maxwell's equations and, for the first time, the envelope wave equation. Being of the second order, the latter requires significant evolutions with respect to the former. It applies in particular to simulations of lasers propagating in plasmas using the reduced Complex Envelope model. The implementation is done in the open source code Smilei for both Cartesian and azimuthal modes (AM) decomposition geometries.

Abstract

Abstract The determination of the strong coupling constant $$\alpha _{\mathrm{s}} (m_{\mathrm{Z}})$$ α s ( m Z ) from H1 inclusive and dijet cross section data [1] exploits perturbative QCD predictions in next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) [2–4]. An implementation error in the NNLO predictions was found [4] which changes the numerical values of the predictions and the resulting values of the fits. Using the corrected NNLO predictions together with inclusive jet and dijet data, the strong coupling constant is determined to be $$\alpha _{\mathrm{s}} (m_{\mathrm{Z}}) =0.1166\,(19)_{\mathrm{exp}}\,(24)_{\mathrm{th}}$$ α s ( m Z ) = 0.1166 ( 19 ) exp ( 24 ) th . Complementarily, $$\alpha _{\mathrm{s}} (m_{\mathrm{Z}})$$ α s ( m Z ) is determined together with parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs) from jet and inclusive DIS data measured by the H1 experiment. The value $$\alpha _{\mathrm{s}} (m_{\mathrm{Z}}) =0.1147\,(25)_{\mathrm{tot}}$$ α s ( m Z ) = 0.1147 ( 25 ) tot obtained is consistent with the determination from jet data alone. Corrected figures and numerical results are provided and the discussion is adapted accordingly.

Abstract

Abstract The measurement of the jet cross sections by the H1 collaboration had been compared to various predictions including the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD calculations which are corrected in this erratum for an implementation error in one of the components of the NNLO calculations. The jet data and the other predictions remain unchanged. Eight figures, one table and conclusions are adapted accordingly, exhibiting even better agreement between the corrected NNLO predictions and the jet data.

Abstract

Abstract Charged particle multiplicity distributions in positron-proton deep inelastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy $$\sqrt{s}=319$$ s = 319 GeV are measured. The data are collected with the H1 detector at HERA corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 pb $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . Charged particle multiplicities are measured as a function of photon virtuality $$Q^2$$ Q 2 , inelasticity y and pseudorapidity $$\eta $$ η in the laboratory and the hadronic centre-of-mass frames. Predictions from different Monte Carlo models are compared to the data. The first and second moments of the multiplicity distributions are determined and the KNO scaling behaviour is investigated. The multiplicity distributions as a function of $$Q^2$$ Q 2 and the Bjorken variable $$x_{\mathrm{bj}}$$ x bj are converted to the hadron entropy $$S_{\mathrm{hadron}}$$ S hadron , and predictions from a quantum entanglement model are tested.

Abstract

The optimisation of the plasma target design for high quality beam laser-driven plasma injector electron source relies on numerical parametric studies using Particle in Cell (PIC) codes. The common input parameters to explore are laser characteristics and plasma density profiles extracted from computational fluid dynamic studies compatible with experimental measurements of target plasma density profiles. We demonstrate the construction of surrogate models using machine learning technique for a laser-plasma injector (LPI) electron source based on more than 12000 simulations of a laser wakefield acceleration performed for sparsely spaced input parameters [1]. Surrogate models are very interesting for LPI design and optimisation because they are much faster than PIC simulations. We develop and compare the performance of three surrogate models, namely, Gaussian processes (GP), multilayer perceptron (MLP), and decision trees (DT). We then use the best surrogate model to quickly find optimal working points to get a selected electron beam energy, charge and energy spread using different methods, namely random search, Bayesian optimisation and multi-objective Bayesian optimisation, Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The H1 Collaboration at HERA reports the first measurement of groomed event shape observables in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) at $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV, using data recorded between the years 2003 and 2007 with an integrated luminosity of $351$ pb$^{-1}$. Event shapes provide incisive probes of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD. Grooming techniques have been used for jet measurements in hadronic collisions; this paper presents the first application of grooming to DIS data. The analysis is carried out in the Breit frame, utilizing the novel Centauro jet clustering algorithm that is designed for DIS event topologies. Events are required to have squared momentum-transfer $Q^2 > 150$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $ 0.2 < y < 0.7$. We report measurements of the production cross section of groomed event 1-jettiness and groomed invariant mass for several choices of grooming parameter. Abstract

The H1 Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable $\tau_1^b$ in neutral-current deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). The observable $\tau_1^b$ is equivalent to a thrust observable defined in the Breit frame. The data sample was collected at the HERA $ep$ collider in the years 2003-2007 with center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=319\,\text{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $351.1\,\text{pb}^{-1}$. Triple differential cross sections are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$, event virtuality $Q^2$, and inelasticity $y$, in the kinematic region $Q^2>150\,\text{GeV}^{2}$. Single differential cross section are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$ in a limited kinematic range. Double differential cross sections are measured, in contrast, integrated over $\tau_1^b$ and represent the inclusive neutral-current DIS cross section measured as a function of $Q^2$ and $y$. The data are compared to a variety of predictions and include classical and modern Monte Carlo event generators, predictions in fixed-order perturbative QCD where calculations up to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$ are available for $\tau_1^b$ or inclusive DIS, and resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed order predictions at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$. These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. Monte Carlo event generators are predictive over the full measured range and hence their underlying models and parameters can be constrained by comparing to the presented data., Comment: 45 pages, 38 tables, 13 figures

Abstract

The Breit frame provides a natural frame to analyze lepton-proton scattering events. In this reference frame, the parton model hard interactions between a quark and an exchanged boson defines the coordinate system such that the struck quark is back-scattered along the virtual photon momentum direction. In Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), higher order perturbative or non-perturbative effects can change this picture drastically. As Bjorken-$x$ decreases below one half, a rather peculiar event signature is predicted with increasing probability, where no radiation is present in one of the two Breit-frame hemispheres and all emissions are to be found in the other hemisphere. At higher orders in $\alpha_s$ or in the presence of soft QCD effects, predictions of the rate of these events are far from trivial, and that motivates measurements with real data. We report on the first observation of the empty current hemisphere events in electron-proton collisions at the HERA collider using data recorded with the H1 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 319 GeV. The fraction of inclusive neutral-current DIS events with an empty hemisphere is found to be $0.0112 \pm 3.9\,\%_\text{stat} \pm 4.5\,\%_\text{syst} \pm 1.6\,\%_\text{mod}$ in the selected kinematic region of $150< Q^2<1500$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $0.14< y<0.7$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 pb$^{-1}$, sufficient to enable differential cross section measurements of these events. The results show an enhanced discriminating power at lower Bjorken-$x$ among different Monte Carlo event generator predictions., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 2 Tables. Abstract

Abstract The parameters of the electroweak theory are determined in a combined electroweak and QCD analysis using all deep-inelastic $$e^+p$$ e+p and $$e^-p$$ e-p neutral current and charged current scattering cross sections published by the H1 Collaboration, including data with longitudinally polarised lepton beams. Various fits to Standard Model parameters in the on-shell scheme are performed. The mass of the W boson is determined as $$m_W=80.520\pm 0.115~\mathrm {GeV} $$ mW=80.520±0.115GeV . The axial-vector and vector couplings of the light quarks to the Z boson are also determined. Both results improve the precision of previous H1 determinations based on HERA-I data by about a factor of two. Possible scale dependence of the weak coupling parameters in both neutral and charged current interactions beyond the Standard Model is also studied. All results are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations.

Abstract

Abstract Measurements of open charm and beauty production cross sections in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are combined. Reduced cross sections are obtained in the kinematic range of negative four-momentum transfer squared of the photon $$2.5~\hbox {GeV}^2\le Q^2 \le 2000\, \hbox {GeV}^2$$ 2.5GeV2≤Q2≤2000GeV2 and Bjorken scaling variable $$3 \cdot 10^{-5} \le x_\mathrm{Bj} \le 5 \cdot 10^{-2}$$ 3·10-5≤xBj≤5·10-2 . The combination method accounts for the correlations of the statistical and systematic uncertainties among the different datasets. Perturbative QCD calculations are compared to the combined data. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is performed using these data together with the combined inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections from HERA. The running charm- and beauty-quark masses are determined as $$m_c(m_c) = 1.290^{+0.046}_{-0.041} \mathrm{(exp/fit)}$$ mc(mc)=1.290-0.041+0.046(exp/fit) $${}^{+0.062}_{-0.014} \mathrm{(model)}$$ -0.014+0.062(model) $${}^{+0.003}_{-0.031} \mathrm{(parameterisation)}$$ -0.031+0.003(parameterisation) GeV and $$m_b(m_b) = 4.049^{+0.104}_{-0.109} \mathrm{(exp/fit)}$$ mb(mb)=4.049-0.109+0.104(exp/fit) $${}^{+0.090}_{-0.032} \mathrm{(model)}$$ -0.032+0.090(model) $${}^{+0.001}_{-0.031} \mathrm{(parameterisation)}~\mathrm{GeV}$$ -0.031+0.001(parameterisation)GeV .

Abstract

Abstract The strong coupling constant $$\alpha _\mathrm{s}$$ α s is determined from inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in neutral-current deep-inelastic ep scattering (DIS) measured at HERA by the H1 collaboration using next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions. The dependence of the NNLO predictions and of the resulting value of $$\alpha _\mathrm{s} (m_\mathrm{Z})$$ α s ( m Z ) at the Z-boson mass $$m_Z$$ m Z are studied as a function of the choice of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. Using inclusive jet and dijet data together, the strong coupling constant is determined to be $$\alpha _\mathrm{s} (m_\mathrm{Z}) =0.1157\,(20)_\mathrm{exp}\,(29)_\mathrm{th}$$ α s ( m Z ) = 0.1157 ( 20 ) exp ( 29 ) th . Complementary, $$\alpha _\mathrm{s} (m_\mathrm{Z})$$ α s ( m Z ) is determined together with parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs) from jet and inclusive DIS data measured by the H1 experiment. The value $$\alpha _\mathrm{s} (m_\mathrm{Z}) =0.1142\,(28)_\mathrm{tot}$$ α s ( m Z ) = 0.1142 ( 28 ) tot obtained is consistent with the determination from jet data alone. The impact of the jet data on the PDFs is studied. The running of the strong coupling is tested at different values of the renormalisation scale and the results are found to be in agreement with expectations.

Abstract

A method for the optimisation and advanced studies of a laser-plasma electron injector is presented, based on a truncated ionisation injection scheme for high quality beam production. The SMILEI code is used with laser envelope approximation and a low number of particles per cell to reach computation time performances enabling the production of a large number of accelerator configurations. The developed and tested workflow is a possible approach for the production of large dataset for laser-plasma accelerator optimisation. A selection of functions of merit used to grade generated electron beams is discussed. Among the significant number of configurations, two specific working points are presented in details. All data generated are left open to the scientific community for further study and optimisation.

Abstract

The quality of electron bunches accelerated by laser wakefields is highly dependant on the temporal and spatial features of the laser driver. Analysis of experiments performed at APOLLON PW-class laser facility shows that spatial instabilities of the focal spot, such as shot-to-shot pointing fluctuations or asymmetry of the transverse fluence, lead to charge and energy degradation of the accelerated electron bunch. It is shown that PIC simulations can reproduce experimental results with a significantly higher accuracy when the measured laser asymmetries are included in the simulated laser's transverse profile, compared to simulations with ideal, symmetric laser profile. A method based on a modified Gerchberg-Saxton iterative algorithm is used to retrieve the laser electric field from fluence measurements in vacuum in the focal volume, and accurately reproduce experimental results using PIC simulations, leading to simulated electron spectra in close agreement with experimental results, for the accelerated charge, energy distribution and pointing of the electron beam at the exit of the plasma.

Abstract

We report on the first experimental characterisation of a gamma-ray spectrometer designed to spectrally resolve high-flux photon beams with energies in the GeV range. The spectrometer has been experimentally characterised using a bremsstrahlung source obtained at the Apollon laser facility during the interaction of laser-wakefield accelerated electron beams (maximum energy of 1.7 GeV and overall charge of 207$\pm$62 pC) with a 1 mm thick tantalum target. Experimental data confirms the possibility of performing single-shot measurements, without the need for accumulation, with a high signal to noise ratio. Scaling the results to photons in the multi-GeV range suggests the possibility of achieving percent-level energy resolution, as required, for instance, by the next generation of experiments in strong-field quantum electrodynamics., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures; changes - expanded explanations, results and conclusions unchanged

Abstract

With the currently available laser powers, it is possible to reach the blowout regime in the Laser WakeField Acceleration (LWFA) where the electrons are completely expelled off-axis behind the laser pulse. This regime is particularly interesting thanks to its linear focusing forces and to its accelerating forces that are independent of the transverse coordinates. In fact, these features ensure a quite stable propagation of electron bunches with low phase-space volume. In this context, the Apollon laser is designed to reach an exceptional multi-petawatt laser peak power, thus aiming at achieving unprecedented accelerating gradients and bringing a scientific breakthrough in the field of LWFA. Since the quality of the self-injected electron bunches is very sensitive to the condition of the laser, it is very important to take into account realistic laser features when performing LWFA simulations. In this paper, we aim at understanding the implications of laser imperfections on the electrons produced with the self-injection scheme in the bubble regime. For this purpose, we carry on a numerical study of LWFA where we include experimentally measured laser profiles from the Apollon facility in full three dimensional Particle-In-Cell simulations.

Abstract

The radiation pattern within high energy quark- and gluon-initiated jets (jet substructure) is used extensively as a precision probe of the strong force as well as an environment for optimizing event generators with numerous applications in high energy particle and nuclear physics. Looking at electron-proton collisions is of particular interest as many of the complications present at hadron colliders are absent. A detailed study of modern jet substructure observables, jet angularities, in electron-proton collisions is presented using data recorded using the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is unbinned and multi-dimensional, using machine learning to correct for detector effects. All of the available reconstructed object information of the respective jets is interpreted by a graph neural network, achieving superior precision on a selected set of jet angularities. Training these networks was enabled by the use of a large number of GPUs in the Perlmutter supercomputer at Berkeley Lab. The particle jets are reconstructed in the laboratory frame, using the $k_{\mathrm{T}}$ jet clustering algorithm. Results are reported at high transverse momentum transfer $Q^2>150$ GeV${}^2$, and inelasticity $0.2 < y < 0.7$. The analysis is also performed in sub-regions of $Q^2$, thus probing scale dependencies of the substructure variables. Abstract

Abstract The inclusive photoproduction of D ∗ mesons and of D ∗-tagged dijets is investigated with the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. The kinematic region covers small photon virtualities Q 21.8 GeV. The heavy quark production process is further investigated in events with at least two jets with transverse momentum p T(jet)>3.5 GeV each, one containing the D ∗ meson. Differential cross sections for D ∗-tagged dijet production and for correlations between the jets are measured in the range |η(D ∗)|2.1 GeV. The results are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo simulations and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Abstract

Abstract A measurement of the inclusive ep scattering cross section is presented in the region of low momentum transfers, 0.2 GeV2 ≤Q 2≤12 GeV2, and low Bjorken x, 5⋅10−6≤x≤0.02. The result is based on two data sets collected in dedicated runs by the H1 Collaboration at HERA at beam energies of 27.6 GeV and 920 GeV for positrons and protons, respectively. A combination with data previously published by H1 leads to a cross section measurement of a few percent accuracy. A kinematic reconstruction method exploiting radiative ep events extends the measurement to lower Q 2 and larger x. The data are compared with theoretical models which apply to the transition region from photoproduction to deep inelastic scattering.

Abstract

The 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics emphasised the importance of an intensified and well-coordinated programme of accelerator R&D, supporting the design and delivery of future particle accelerators in a timely, affordable and sustainable way. This report sets out a roadmap for European accelerator R&D for the next five to ten years, covering five topical areas identified in the Strategy update. The R&D objectives include: improvement of the performance and cost-performance of magnet and radio-frequency acceleration systems; investigations of the potential of laser / plasma acceleration and energy-recovery linac techniques; and development of new concepts for muon beams and muon colliders. Abstract

The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic $ep$ scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. A perturbative QCD fit, simultaneously of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and and the PDFs, was performed with the result $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1156 \pm 0.0011~{\rm (exp)}~ ^{+0.0001}_{-0.0002}~ {\rm (model}$ ${\rm +~parameterisation)}~ \pm 0.0029~{\rm (scale)}$. The PDF sets of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO were determined with separate fits using two fixed values of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$, $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)=0.1155$ and $0.118$, since the latter value was already chosen for the published HERAPDF2.0 NNLO analysis based on HERA inclusive DIS data only. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input., Comment: 43 pages, 24 figures, to be submitted to Eur. Phys. J. C

Abstract

The first measurement of lepton-jet momentum imbalance and azimuthal correlation in lepton-proton scattering at high momentum transfer is presented. These data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are corrected for detector effects using an unbinned machine learning algorithm OmniFold, which considers eight observables simultaneously in this first application. The unfolded cross sections are compared to calculations performed within the context of collinear or transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) as well as Monte Carlo event generators. Abstract

The resources needed for Particle in Cell simulations of Laser Wakefield Acceleration can be greatly reduced in many cases of interest using an envelope model. However, the inclusion of tunneling ionization in this time averaged treatment of laser-plasma acceleration is not straightforward, since the statistical features of the electron beams obtained through ionization should ideally be reproduced without resolving the high frequency laser oscillations. In this context, an extension of an already known envelope ionization procedure is proposed, valid also for laser pulses with higher intensities, which consists in adding the initial longitudinal drift to the newly created electrons within the laser pulse ionizing the medium. The accuracy of the proposed procedure is shown with both linear and circular polarization in a simple benchmark where a nitrogen slab is ionized by a laser pulse, and in a more complex benchmark of laser plasma acceleration with ionization injection in the nonlinear regime. With this addition to the envelope ionization algorithm, the main phase space properties of the bunches injected in a plasma wakefield with ionization by a laser (charge, average energy, energy spread, rms sizes, normalized emittance) can be estimated with accuracy comparable to a non-envelope simulation with significantly reduced resources, even in cylindrical geometry. Abstract

The resolution of the system given by Maxwell's equations and Vlasov equation in three dimensions can describe all the phenomena of interest for laser wakefield acceleration, with few exceptions (e.g. ionization). Such arduous task can be numerically completed using Particle in Cell (PIC) codes, where the plasma is sampled by an ensemble of macroparticles and the electromagnetic fields are defined on a computational grid. However, the resulting three dimensional PIC simulations require substantial resources and often yield a larger amount of information than the one necessary to study a particular aspect of a phenomenon. Reduced models, i.e. models of the Maxwell-Vlasov system taking into account approximations and symmetries, are thus of fundamental importance for preliminary studies and parametric scans. Three dimensional Particle in Cell simulations of Laser Wakefield Acceleration require a considerable amount of resources but are necessary to have realistic predictions and to design future experiments. The planned experiments for the Apollon laser also include two stages of plasma acceleration, for a total plasma length of the order of tens of millimeters or centimeters. In this context, where traditional 3D numerical simulations would be unfeasible, we present the results of the application of a recently proposed envelope method, to describe the laser pulse ant its interaction with the plasma without the need to resolve its high frequency oscillations. The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA (European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications) is preparing a conceptual design for a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams using plasma as the acceleration medium. The design includes two user areas: one for FEL science and one for High Energy Physics (HEP) detector development and other pilot applications. The accelerator facility will be based on a laser and/or a beam driven plasma acceleration approach. This contribution introduces layout considerations of the future plasma accelerator facilities in the context of EuPRAXIA. It compares conventional and novel plasma accelerator facility requirements and presents potential layouts for the future site. Together with performance analysis, cost effectiveness, and targeted user cases of the individual configurations, such layout studies will later enable a ranking of potential configurations. Abstract

The strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ is determined from inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in neutral-current deep-inelastic $ep$ scattering (DIS) measured at HERA by the H1 collaboration using next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions. The dependence of the NNLO predictions and of the resulting value of $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ at the $Z$-boson mass $m_Z$ are studied as a function of the choice of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. Using inclusive jet and dijet data together, the strong coupling constant is determined to be $\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1166\,(19)_{\rm exp}\,(24)_{\rm th}$. Complementary, $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ is determined together with parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs) from jet and inclusive DIS data measured by the H1 experiment. The value $\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1147\,(25)_{\rm tot}$ obtained is consistent with the determination from jet data alone. The impact of the jet data on the PDFs is studied. 44. Exploratory Growth Mixture Modeling of Cannabis-Withdrawal Syndrome Trajectories of Adult Pure Cannabis Dependents During Detoxification: Two Subtypes?

Abstract

As clinical studies about subtypes of the cannabis withdrawal syndrome (CWS) are scant, we performed a re-analysis of longitudinal data with German adult cannabis-users seeking inpatient cannabis detoxification-treatment. Sixty-seven cannabis-dependents without active comorbidity were included for growth-mixture-analysis (GMM) of their CWS-severity-trajectories during a scheduled 24-day detox-treatment. As of treatment-day 12, thirty-six (53.7%) of 67 patients were discharged after successful detoxification. This led to artificial imputations for I-GMM. Therefore, we preferred the results of the GMM including raw data-only (R-GMM). By both, I-GMM and R-GMM, we found two classes of CWS severity time-courses. Class one (n = 44, R-GMM) showed a continuously decreasing CWS-severity; class two (n = 23, R-GMM) exhibited a sharp peak (generally between days 2–6 post-cessation). A short inpatient treatment-period and low urinary 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ9 -tetrahydrocannabinol-level upon admission predicted the peaking trajectory of R-GMM-class-two-CWS. Withdrawal syndrome medication (PRN), comorbidity, cannabis-history data and gender balance were not significantly different between the CWS-classes. Although possibly confounded by PRN-medication, this exploratory study supports the presence of two CWS-variants in adult cannabis-dependents, characterized by a slowly decreasing ("protracted") slope (class one) or a clear crescendo-decrescendo trajectory (class two). Abstract

Introduction People addicted to illegal drugs were discussed as a risk group for SARS-CoV-2 infections, with increased susceptibility and a severe course of infection. Methods In this study, the frequency of SARS-CoV-2 infections of drug-dependent persons admitted to inpatient detoxification treatment in five psychiatric hospitals was determined by implementing routine polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-testing at admission (9/2020) up to one year. Main substance-related diagnosis, comorbid respiratory disease, housing situation, and current opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) were documented. An age-matched control group of psychiatric inpatients without dependence from illegal drugs was established. Results Data from 1675 patients (male 79.5%; mean age 39.5 years; opioid dependence 81.5% homelessness; 2.4%; chronic respiratory disease 6.3%) were included. Out of 1365 patients dependent on opioids, 50.2% were currently in OMT. Six (3 female; mean age 40.3 years) patients tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by PCR (0.36%), and none showed symptoms of COVID-19. All six were opioid dependent, 5 currently not in OMT. In the control group, 11 out of 1811 inpatients tested positive (0.61%). Discussion The rate of SARS-CoV-2-infections in persons with dependence on illegal drugs was not increased compared to a control group of psychiatric patients. OMT is presumably a protective factor, e. g. in the participating cities, OMT facilities offered an easy access to vaccination programs. In contrast, drug addicts in the USA were severely affected by the pandemic. A definite diagnosis of opioid use disorder (OUD) in patients with CNCP on long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) is a prerequisite for effective and targeted therapy but may be complicated as some criteria of OUD might be attributed to the desire of the patient to relieve the pain.
