Abstract

The National Synchrotron Light Source II is a third generation light source, which was constructed at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This project includes a highly-optimized 3 GeV electron storage ring, linac preinjector, and full-energy synchrotron injector. Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics built and delivered the booster for NSLS-II. The commissioning of the booster was successfully completed. This paper reviews fulfilled work by participants.

Abstract

The product of the electronic width of the J/ψ meson and the branching fractions of its decay to hadrons and electrons has been measured using the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e + e − collider. The obtained values are $$ \begin{array}{c}\hfill {\Gamma}_{ee}\left(J/\psi \right)=5.550\pm 0.056\pm 0.089\kern0.5em \mathrm{keV},\hfill \\ {}\hfill {\Gamma}_{ee}\left(J/\psi \right)\cdotp {\mathrm{\mathcal{B}}}_{\mathrm{hadrons}}\left(J/\psi \right)=4.884\pm 0.048\pm 0.078\kern0.5em \mathrm{keV},\hfill \\ {}\hfill {\Gamma}_{ee}\left(J/\psi \right)\cdotp {\mathrm{\mathcal{B}}}_{ee}\left(J/\psi \right)=0.3331\pm 0.0066\pm 0.0040\kern0.5em \mathrm{keV}.\hfill \end{array} $$ Γ e e J / ψ = 5.550 ± 0.056 ± 0.089 keV , Γ e e J / ψ · ℬ hadrons J / ψ = 4.884 ± 0.048 ± 0.078 keV , Γ e e J / ψ · ℬ e e J / ψ = 0.3331 ± 0.0066 ± 0.0040 keV . The uncertainties shown are statistical and systematic, respectively. Using the result presented and the world-average value of the electronic branching fraction, one obtains the total width of the J/ψ meson: $$ \Gamma =92.94\pm 1.83\kern0.5em \mathrm{keV}. $$ Γ = 92.94 ± 1.83 keV . These results are consistent with the previous experiments.

Abstract

This paper describes the structure and control algorithms of a controller of a high-voltage source with an output voltage of 60 kV and a power of up to 30 kW. The source is designed to be used as part of a power unit of an electron-beam welding device developed at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (BINP SB RAS). High-quality welds require a stable electron beam energy. Herewith, a standard operation mode is quick and deep modulation of the electron current. The problem of achieving high-quality control and limiting the transient distortions of output voltage of the source is solved. The error of establishing and stabilizing the output voltage is 0.1%, which allows obtaining high-quality welding. Transient distortions at 100% modulation of the load current do not exceed the value of ±1%, which, along with fast reaction of the source to a load breakdown (energy released during breakdown is smaller than 15 J), protects the welded parts and elements of the gun from being damaged by an electron beam.

Abstract

The KEDR detector is a universal magnetic detector designed for studying the c- and b-quarks and two-photon physics, and is employed at the VEPP-4M e + e − collider. A specific feature of the experiment is the measurement of absolute beam energy using two methods: the resonant depolarization and the faster but less precise Compton backscattering of laser photons. This allowed a large series of measurements to be performed, in which the accuracy of determination of such fundamental parameters of particles as mass and total and leptonic widths was improved.

Abstract

We present a study of the inclusive photon spectrum from 6.3 million J/ψ decays collected with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e+e- collider. We measure the branching fraction of the radiative decay J/ψ → ηcγ, ηc width and mass. Taking into account an asymmetric photon line shape we obtain: Mηc = (2978.1 ± 1.4 ± 2.0) MeV/c2, Γηc = (43.5 ± 5.4 ± 15.8) MeV, [Formula: see text].

Abstract

One of the basic constraints on the efficiency of the VEPP-4M electron-positron collider in high-energy physics experiments is the longitudinal multibunch instability; the reason for this instability is the interbunch interaction via long-lived wake fields excited by the beam in accelerating resonators. The longitudinal feedback system was developed for suppressing this instability. The VEPP-4M beam intensity is limited by the transverse instability of coupled modes (fast head-tail); the broadband digital feedback system was developed to suppress this instability. A description of both feedback systems is presented, their working characteristics are given, and the first results of testing systems with VEPP-4M beams are described.

Abstract

We present a study of the inclusive photon spectra from 5.9 million J/psi decays collected with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e+e- collider. We measure the branching fraction of radiative decay J/psi to eta_c gamma, eta_c width and mass. Our preliminary results are: M(eta_c) = 2979.4+-1.5+-1.9 MeV, G(eta_c) = 27.8+-5.1+-3.3 MeV, B(J/psi to eta_c gamma) = (2.34+-0.15+-0.40)%.

Abstract

The products of the electron width of the J/ψ meson and the branching fraction of its decays to the lepton pairs were measured using data from the KEDR experiment at the VEPP-4M electron–positron collider. The results are Γee×Γee/Γ=0.3323±0.0064(stat.)±0.0048(syst.) keV, Γee×Γμμ/Γ=0.3318±0.0052(stat.)±0.0063(syst.) keV. Their combinations Γee×(Γee+Γμμ)/Γ=0.6641±0.0082(stat.)±0.0100(syst.) keV, Γee/Γμμ=1.002±0.021(stat.)±0.013(syst.) can be used to improve the accuracy of the leptonic and full widths and test leptonic universality.

Abstract

A precise τ lepton mass measurement performed at the VEPP-4M collider with the KEDR detector is reported. The mass value is evaluated from the τ+τ− cross section behavior around the production threshold. The result based on 6.7 pb−1 of data is m τ = 1776.81 −0.23 +0.25 ± 0.15 MeV. Using 0.8 pb−1 of data collected at the ψ′ peak, we have also determined that Γ ee B ττ(ψ′) = 9.0 ± 2.6 eV.

Abstract

The first lasing near wavelength 140 μm was achieved in April 2003 on a high-power free electron laser (FEL) constructed at the Siberian Center for Photochemical Research. In this paper, we briefly describe the design of FEL driven by an accelerator–recuperator. Characteristics of the electron beam and terahertz laser radiation, obtained at the first experiments, are also presented in the paper.

Abstract

The Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute and the Budker INP developed a design and manufactured the main parts of a free electron laser with emission power of one watt in the infrared region of 25 to 30 microns including 10-cm microtron. After the commissioning of microtron, beamline and undulator electron beams were transmitted through the undulator and by using a special code microtron electron beam, performance parameters were measured and computed.

Abstract

To extract the large amount of energy stored in the magnetic field of the LHC superconducting dipoles (8 chains with 1350 MJ each) and quadrupoles (16 chains with about 24 MJ each), opening switches will be used. The switches consist of an array of electromechanical D.C. breakers, specifically designed for this particular application. The opening process transfers the magnet excitation current from the array of eight breakers to the extraction resistors, rapidly deexciting the magnet chain. The arcing behavior in breakers of the array has been studied. In order to facilitate the maintenance of the switches an arc detector has been developed. This paper describes the design of the extraction switches and presents the test results, obtained at the LHC pilot extraction facility.

Abstract

Electronic devices intended to visualize x‐ray images are intensively evolved on the basis of linear video signal shapers (LVSS): x‐ray vidicons, image vidicons with x radiation‐to‐light conversion using luminophors and scintillators, charge‐coupled devices, photodiode arrays and matrices, as well as on the basis of various electro‐optical converters: electrostatically or magnetically focused and microchannel image intensifers. Their broad application to x‐ray diffraction topography, structue analysis, diffractometry, tomography, and radiography has necessitated (already from 1982) the introduction of a common criterion for calibration of their sensitivity—the flux density of monoenergetic photons. In particular, when calibrating the LVSS it is necessary to find a direct, unambiguous correspondence between this criterion and the amplitude of a video signal. For this purpose, a device has been designed which is used both for absolute calibration of LVSSs and, of course, for a trivial standardization of x‐ray counters with respect to their efficiency. This device is based on two commercial gas proportional counters whose position in space is aligned for a successive, one after another, ‘‘threading’’ of them to the x‐ray beam monochromatized by means of the crystal‐diffraction scheme (Lukirsky’s method). Both counters are identical to each other. Of course, each counter has input and output windows. The beam is shaped by diaphragms and by two slits, horizontal and vertical, with cylinders as ‘‘knives.’’ One of the slits is scanned in the diffraction plane by a stepper motor. The counters are tested for identity by selecting them depending on their counting properties and energy resolution, with the escape peaks taken into account. All these operations and the rest of the measurements are performed by electronic units in the CAMAC standard, controlled by a microcomputer. On the test monochromatized x‐ray beam, the device is interchangeable with a LVSS or a counting detector being standardized. The test beam is monitored. The width of the slit being scanned is shaped up to 10 μm, thereby allowing the LVSS to be standardized for geometrical resolution.

Using the result presented and the world-average value of the electronic branching fraction, one obtains the total width of the J/ψ meson: Γ=92.94±1.83keV. $$ \Gamma =92.94\pm 1.83\kern0.5em \mathrm{keV}. $$ These results are consistent with the previous experiments.
