Background: Children in rural communities face significant health challenges due to environmental hazards and limited access to healthcare. Understanding their immune resilience and parental perspectives is crucial for addressing health disparities in such contexts. Objective: This research aimed to explore the immune resilience of children in Tugaya, Lanao del Sur, Philippines, and understand parental perspectives on fostering their children’s health in the face of environmental challenges. Methods: A qualitative case study approach was used. Ten parents of children aged 5-10 from two barangays were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected from 15 January 2024 to 15 February 2024 through semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using a thematic analysis. Results: Three main themes were generated: 1) Parental guardianship of children’s immune resilience, 2) Parental insights on fostering immune resilience in children, and 3) Parental perception and action in nurturing children’s immune resilience. These themes highlight parental roles in nurturing health, understanding immune resilience, prioritizing children’s well-being, maintaining cleanliness, providing balanced diets, and promoting proactive and informed parenting practices. Conclusion: It is evident that parents play a crucial role in fostering immune resilience among children by adopting various strategies. Understanding these perspectives can inform public health policies and community interventions to improve children’s health in similar rural contexts. This insight has significant implications for healthcare management and policy, suggesting the need for targeted support and interventions to empower parents in rural communities to enhance their children’s immune resilience.

INTRODUCTION: Stoma formation affects an individual in various ways, including physical, emotional, social, and cognitive functions. Diverse studies report ways of an individual lives with new stoma formation. However, the comprehensive understanding of the entire process by the patient, which includes knowledge before the surgical procedure, as well as the subsequent acceptance, adaptation, and challenges to living with a stoma is lacking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In-depth interview session were conducted with 12 colorectal cancer patients who have undergone surgical procedures for intestinal stoma formation. The patterns and themes within the data were identified by thematic analysis, involving data familiarisation and coding followed by themes' generation and refinement of the themes. RESULTS: Four themes and 9 subthemes were identified, which revealed the sufficiency of stoma-related information and understanding prior to surgery as well as positive acceptance of self and family members reflected through their reactions and support. Nonetheless, the challenges were anticipated which highlights the complications of the stoma itself, obstacles surrounding social life, and financial burdens. CONCLUSION: This study provided valuable insights into the experiences of individuals living with a stoma following colorectal cancer surgery. The themes and subthemes highlight the need to address social stigma as well as financial issues to alleviate the burden of stoma-related expenses. In this research, prediction of crude oil cuts from the first stage of refining process field is laid out using rough set theory (RST) based adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) soft sensor model to enhance the performance of oil refinery process. The RST was used to reduce the fuzzy rule sets of ANFIS model, and its features in the decision table. Also, discretisation methods were used to optimise the continuous data’s discretisation. This helps to predict the two critical variables of light naphtha product: Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) and American Petroleum Institute gravity (API gravity), which detect the cut’s quality. Hence, a real-time process of Al Doura oil refinery is examined and the process data of refining crude oil from these two sources improve the knowledge provided by the data. The response variables represent the feedback measured value of cascade controller in the top of the splitter in crude distillation unit (CDU) in the rectifying section, which controls the reflux liquid’s flow towards the splitter’s head. The proposed adaptive soft sensor model succeeded to fit the results from laboratory tests, and a steady-state control system was achieved through an embedded virtual sensor. The predictive control system has been employed using cascade ANFIS controller in parallel with the soft sensor model to keep the purity of the distillate product in the stated range of the quality control of oil refinery. The results obtained from the proposed ANFIS based cascade control have no over/undershoots, and the rise time and settling time are improved by 26.65% and 84.63%, respectively than the conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) based cascade control. Purpose: There has been increasing interest in patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) to evaluate the patient experience and satisfaction with care. We conducted a prospective multicenter cohort study to determine any association between patients’ satisfaction of care and their outcomes 1 year after lumbar spine surgery. Methods: Satisfaction with care was recorded through telephone interviews and a standardized questionnaire. Baseline data collection (300 patients) and 1-year follow-up (209 patients) were conducted through The Swedish National Register for Spine Surgery (Swespine). Exposures were patient experiences, health care professional (HCP) attitudes, shared decision-making, and overall satisfaction with care. Associations were evaluated using adjusted analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) models. Results: Satisfaction with HCP attitudes was not associated with improvements at 1 year in Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) or back pain; however a significantly greater improvement in leg pain score was reported by patients who were highly satisfied (3.0 points) versus the moderate/low satisfaction group (1.3 points; P = 0.008). For shared decision-making, high satisfaction was associated with significantly greater improvements, as compared to moderate/low satisfaction, in ODI (20 vs 11 points; P = 0.001), back pain (2.6 vs 1.7 points; P = 0.05), and leg pain (3.2 vs 1.9 points, P = 0.007). Similarly, high overall satisfaction with care was associated with significantly greater improvements in ODI (18 vs 10 points; P = 0.02), back pain (3.2 vs 0.6 points; P < 0.001), and leg pain (2.6 vs 1.1 points; P = 0.009). Conclusions: Findings indicate that shared decision-making on perioperative care and patients’ overall satisfaction with care were associated with better health outcomes 1 year after lumbar spine surgery.

The fisheries of the lower reaches of Tigris river, north Qurna in Basrah Governorate have been analyzed during the period from January to December 2005. The fishing boats used there varied in lengths form 5 to 10m, of which 50% were motorized with 25-75 HP. Seine and drift gill nets are the main fishing gears used, their lengths ranged from 100 to 200m with mesh sizes of 14-100mm and 7-32mm for seine and gill nets respectively. The number of fishermen in each boat varied from 1 to 7. Twenty three fish species were recorded caught in the area, of which eight were marine species, belonging to twelve fish families, in addition to shrimps. The total catches ranged from 629Kg in January - march to 3335Kg in July- September with total catch of 7671Kg. Three species namely catfish Silurus triostegus, crucian carp Carassius carassius and khishni Liza abu comprised 86.93% of the total catches constituting 69.65%, 11.02% and 6.26%, respectively. The average catch per unit of effort was 19.8 Kg/hr/100m for seine nets and 2.42 Kg/hr/100m for gill nets. The diversity and evenness indices for biomass were 1.0 and 0.33, respectively, in July-September and 1.5 and 0.52, respectively, in October-December. The highest similarity index of species composition was between April-June and July-September (87%), and lowest between April-June and January-March (63%).

Observations on the sperm biology of Bunnei (Barbus sharpeyi), after hormone injection perm activity for the injected fish ranged between 85 % - 100 %. The most amazing finding was the sperm activity of the collected semen from deceased fish after one hour was 90 %, and it has the highest activity time(120 sec.), this time was higher than that for the Bunnei from Al-Therthar reservoir during spawning season. The sperm volume was very low (1- 0.4 ml). which is a characteristic of this species. The sperm concentration ranged between (25.85 - 40.69) × 109 , and it is also higher than that for Bunnei in Al-Therthar reservoir.

The biological aspects for the semen of males (Cyprinus carpio) were assessed during the spawning season, after they were artificially induced for spawning. The males were induced for insemination by injecting with Ovaprim and pituitary gland extract. Two dosages had been used 0.5, 0.3 ml and 2,4 mg per Kg of body weight respectively. After that the volume of semen, pH, number of sperms in one ml and motility were estimated. The total volume of semen obtained from males ranged between (72 – 117) ml by using Ovaprim and pituitary respectively. while the average concentration of sperms changed between (35.3 ± 9.1)×109 sperm /ml to (28.2 ± 5.2)×109 sperm /ml for the Ovaprim and PG respectively. The mean of Spermatocrite value was (65.3 ±15.8) % for Ovaprim and (52.33 ±10.4) % for PG. The average motility of sperm fluctuated between (90 ±10) % and (95.4 ±5.6) % for semen was obtained from males injected by Ovaprim and pituitary respectively. The effectiveness period of sperms ranged between (101± 30.9) sec and (113±34.2) sec for the two hormones respectively. This study indicated that the males in this range of length and weight had semen suitable for the hatchery requirements.

Morphology, age and growth of Bunni, Barbus sharpeyi Gunther, 1874 in Swab marsh, south Iraq, was studied from December 2004 to November 2005. A total of 864 B. sharpeyi (100-533mm TL) were collected using gill nets of different mesh sizes and electrical fishing. Twenty one morphometric and seven meristic characters for the species were described in the study. The morphometric characters were calculated as numerical ratio to standard and head lengths. The indices characters associated with standard length ranged from 0.0043 of eye diameter to 1.22 of total length, and with head length ranged from 0.178 of eye diameter to 0.752 of head width. The slopes of the regression lines ranged from 0.023 of eye diameter to 1.142 of total length. Fishes of 200-360mm length groups of B. sharpeyi were dominants in the samples. Total length–weight relationship of B. sharpeyi was W= 3.839 × 10-6 L 3.2017. The mean relation condition factor was 1.001. The annuli on scales formed during December and the growth of the scales was high during the period from February to August and was associated with water temperatures. The relation between standard length (L) and scale radius (S) was: L = 17.737 + 5.0469 S. The age composition ranged from 1 to 7. The standard lengths for these ages were 138.0, 202.0, 248.0, 304.8, 353.8, 393.1 and 439.2mm respectively. The growth of B. sharpeyi in Swab marsh was better than that of at Iraqi waters with the exception of B. sharpeyi at Hammar marsh. The mathematical model of growth as calculated by von Bertalanffy equation was Lt = 650 [1-e -0.138 (t + 0.642)].

In the study we cultured the shrimp L. vannamei (initial weight 0.0004 g) under laboratory conditions in marine science center and using three types of food. These were life food (Artemia nauplii), artificial died and mixed food (Artemia nauplii and artificial died). In this study, several region and sites were investigated for the most appropriate site for shrimp culture in Basrah province/Iraq. An index values based on 8 indicators revealed hat the area located at the East Basrah channel is the best (excellent) for shrimp culture.

In this study the breeding of the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei was achieved by two methods; the first was stock breeding to estimate total number of eggs, and the second was individual breeding to recognize the relationship between weight and eggs number. The environmental factors in the hatchery were measured, the averages of water temperature and salinity were recorded to be 31 º C and 32 ppt., respectively, while the dissolved oxygen and pH were 7.5 mg/ l and 8.2 respectively. The results of stock breeding showed that total number of eggs (fecundity) and nauplii produced from 20 ablated females with weight of 35.5 + 3.1 g were 3000000 eggs per spawning and about 2 400000 nauplii respectively. Fertilization rate and hatching rates were 86.5 %, and 78.7 % respectively. The results of individual breeding showed that maximum number of eggs (164000 eggs / female) was achieved in these females that weight 42.0 g, while the minimum were 95000 eggs / female for female weighted 32.5 g. Maximum fertilization rate was 95.2 % in those females with lower weight, while the minimum fertility rate was 77.5 % in those with higher weight.

The study included the utilization of three types of hormones, i.e. LHRH-A2 with dosages of 10, 20 or 30 μg / kg, a mixture of LHRH-A2 with dosages of 10, 20, and 30 μg / kg with Domperidone (DOM) at 5 mg / kg and carp pituitary gland extract (CPE) at 3 and 4 mg / kg, in order to study the effect of hormone type and used dosage on the level of gonadotropins secreted from the pituitary gland of the common carp Cyprinus carpio L. females during the artificial fertilization. Concentrations of GTHs (FSH and LH) were measured using ELISA kit on blood samples collected from fish caudal peduncle after 2, 6 and 12 hours of injection with LHRH-A2 and hormone mixture or 2, 6 and 8 hours for fish treated with CPE .Results showed that GTHs levels were low in fish treated with LHRH-A2 for all the utilized dosages LH (4.66 ± 1.27 mIU / mL) or LHRH-A2+ DOM LH (5.22 ± 0.77 mIU / mL). In contrast, GTHs levels in fish treated with CPE at 3 and 4 mg / kg were higher and levels of FSH and LH were higher with 4 mg / kg LH (34.51 ±12.59 mIU/mL) than it with 3 mg / kg,

INTRODUCTION: In every country, an adequate and reliable blood supply can be assured by a stable base of regular, voluntary, and unpaid blood donors. However, with the strike of COVID-19 around the world, fewer donors have come forward to donate blood since the government's movement control order. Therefore, to ensure the blood supply is always sufficient, this study discussed the Malaysians' motivation and intention to donate blood during the COVID-19. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The structural focus group discussion was conducted among nine informants. The informants are classified into four groups, which are non, first-time, regular, and lapsed (repeated/occasional) blood donors. RESULTS: It indicated that the regular and lapsed group of blood donors were motivated by the satisfaction of donating blood. Meanwhile, first-time donors are motivated to donate blood because of extrinsic rewards. However, the donors attested that the movement control order restricted their movement to go to the blood transfusion center. On the other hand, the non-donor group admitted that they do intend to donate blood. Still, several factors such as work commitment, location, and fear of being infected by COVID-19, hold them from doing so. CONCLUSIONS: These findings will serve as insights for future blood donation disruption remediation, especially during unexpected situations, as well as the success of the Malaysian blood campaign. Abstract Background In obese patients, total hip arthroplasty (THA) can be technically demanding with increased perioperative risks. The aim of this prospective cohort study is to evaluate the effect of body mass index (BMI) on radiological restoration of femoral offset (FO) and leg length as well as acetabular cup positioning. Methods In this prospective study, patients with unilateral primary osteoarthritis (OA) treated with THA between September 2010 and December 2013 were considered for inclusion. The perioperative plain radiographs were standardised and used to measure the preoperative degree of hip osteoarthritis, postoperative FO, leg length discrepancy (LLD), acetabular component inclination and anteversion. Results We included 213 patients (74.5% of those considered for inclusion) with a mean BMI of 27.7 (SD 4.5) in the final analysis. The postoperative FO was improper in 55% and the LLD in 15%, while the cup inclination and anteversion were improper in 13 and 23% of patients respectively. A multivariable logistic regression model identified BMI as the only factor that affected LLD. Increased BMI increased the risk of LLD (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.25). No other factors included in the model affected any of the primary or secondary outcomes. Conclusion Increased BMI showed a negative effect on restoration of post-THA leg length but not on restoration of FO or positioning of the acetabular cup. Age, gender, OA duration or radiological severity and surgeon’s experience showed no relation to post-THA restoration of FO, leg length or cup positioning.

Abstract Background Despite advances in operative techniques and preoperative care, proximal femur fractures (PFF) still represent a great public health problem. Displacement and fracture stability have been assumed as important determinants of treatment modality and outcome in such fractures. Purpose of this study was to determine whether the radiological severity of PFF fractures has increased over time. Methods In a cohort study, the plain radiographs of all patients with PFF aged over 50 years who were admitted to Umeå University Hospital in 1981/82, 2002 and 2012 were recruited to examine the types of fractures. Results The ratio of undisplaced to displaced femoral neck (FN) fractures was 30 to 70% in 1981/82, 28 to 72% in 2002 and 25 to 75% in 2012. The ratio of stable to unstable intertrochanteric (IT) fractures was 64 to 36% in 1981/82, 68 to 32% in 2002 and 75 to 25% in 2012. The ratio of simple to comminute subtrochanteric fractures was 35 to 65% in 1981/82, 16 to 84% in 2002 and 12 to 88% in 2012. In both FN and IT fractures we found no statistical difference among these 3 study periods, p = 0.67 and p = 0.40. In subtrochanteric fractures we saw a tendency towards more comminute subtrochanteric fractures (1981/82 to 2012), p = 0.09. Conclusions We found no significant increment in the radiological severity of FN and IT over a 30 years’ period. However, there was tendency towards an increase in comminute subtrochanteric fractures.

Background and purpose — The prevalence of obesity is on the rise, becoming a worldwide epidemic. The main purpose of this register-based observational study was to investigate whether different BMI classes are associated with increased risk of reoperation within 2 years, risk of revision within 5 years, and the risk of dying within 90 days after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). We hypothesized that increasing BMI would increase these risks. Patients and methods — We analyzed a cohort of 83,146 patients who had undergone an elective THA for primary osteoarthritis between 2008 and 2015 from the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register (SHAR). BMI was classified according to the World Health Organization (WHO) into 6 classes: < 18.5 as underweight, 18.5–24.9 as normal weight, 25–29.9 as overweight, 30–34.9 as class I obesity, 35–39.9 as class II obesity, and ≥ 40 as class III obesity. Results — Both unadjusted and adjusted parameter estimates showed increasing risk of reoperation at 2 years and revision at 5 years with each overweight and obesity class, mainly due to increased risk of infection. Uncemented and reversed hybrid fixations and surgical approaches other than the posterior were all associated with increased risk. Obesity class III (≥ 40), male sex, and increasing ASA class were associated with increased 90-day mortality. Interpretation — Increasing BMI was associated with 2-year reoperation and 5-year revision risks after primary THA where obese patients have a higher risk than overweight or normal weight patients. As infection seems to be the main cause, customizing preoperative optimization and prophylactic measures for obese patients may help reduce risk.

This study is based on rearing of juveniles of the shrimp Metapenaeus affinis collected from shatt Al-Ararb in Garmmat Ali river. The period of juveniles existence during the study was found extend from November to July in 2008. During the catch and the transportation of shrimps from the field to laboratory in rearing ponds. Several essential experiments were conducted aiming to understand the feeding habit and food preference of juveniles. Three temperatures were tested (15, 20 and 25 °C) for food consumption. In both cases (i.e. the live food Artemia franciscana and the artificial diet), the food consumption was highest at 25 °C. However, direct increase was found between temperatures and food consumption at this temperature. The elementary canal fullness and was excretion at the three temperatures was examined too. The time (minutes) was found to be shorter when shrimps feed on A. franciscana (live food) compared with the artificial diet, the value were 51.4 - 194.15 for A. franciscana between 15 °C and 25 °C, while were 56.6 - 202.05 for artificial diet at similar that temperatures.

The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the effect of BMI on 1-year functional outcome, quality of life (QoL) and rate of postoperative complications after shoulder arthroplasty. We included 121 patients (59 men and 62 women) with primary osteoarthritis (OA) who underwent anatomical or reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA or rTSA) between 2011 and 2016. In Bangladesh, the expansion of Internet banking is beset with several infrastructural, institutional, and regulatory constraints. Despite the constraints, efforts by the Bangladesh Bank in modernizing the country’s payment system and commitment by the government in building ‘Digital Bangladesh’ have brought competition among the scheduled banks to improve banking services and rapidly adopt Internet banking on a wider scale. However, several opinion polls have revealed that many clients are found reluctant in adopting banking via the Internet because of their concerns about the privacy of the personal information they provide to online. Using the theory of planned behaviour as its theoretical basis, this study examined the relationships among beliefs about Internet privacy and trust, along with beliefs about perceived behavioural control and the expectations of important others and online banking behaviour. Data were collected from 327 university students. Analysis of the data indicates that beliefs about trust and privacy positively affect attitudes toward Internet banking, but attitude is found not to significantly affect Internet banking behaviour. Normative beliefs positively affect subjective norms which in turn affect Internet banking behaviour. Similarly, beliefs about self-efficacy regarding Internet banking positively affect perceived behavioural control, which in turn affects actual online banking behaviour.

Background and purpose — The direct lateral (DL) approach to the hip for femoral neck fractures (FNF) has been shown to reduce the rate of dislocation and reoperations. We evaluate the effect of transition from the posterolateral (PL) to DL approach on reoperation and dislocation rates and patients’ reported outcome. Patients and methods — In a prospective cohort study between 2012 and 2015, we enrolled 362 patients (median age 83 years, 70% women, mean follow-up 25 months) with a displaced FNF. The first group of 146 patients were operated using the PL and the second group of 216 patients with a DL approach, after change of our routines. A multivariable Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate factors associated with dislocation and reoperation. A generalized linear model was used to evaluate the functional outcome by comparing WOMAC and Harris hip scores between the 2 groups. Results — The reoperation rate was reduced from 13% in the PL to 6% in the DL group and the dislocation rate from 13% to 4%. Cox proportional hazard analysis identified the PL approach as the only factor associated with an increased risk of reoperation (hazard ratio =2.5, 95% CI 1.2–5.2). Age, sex, ASA classification, type of arthroplasty, cognitive dysfunction, or the experience of the surgeon had no effect on the risk of reoperation. Patient-reported outcome was similar between the 2 groups. Interpretation — In patients with FNF we have reduced the reoperation and dislocation rates by changing the surgical approach used for hip arthroplasty without affecting the patient-reported functional outcome.

Indonesia governs the post-entry observation through the Animal Quarantine Installation (AQI) as a precautionary measure to minimize the risk of the entrance and the spread of animal infectious organism and disease of import animals. However, wastes generated from their activities are potentially pollute the environment. This research aimed to evaluate the pollution from AQI activity on its receiving water body. The study was conducted at 5 companies as follow: PT. A, PT. B, PT. C, PT. D, and PT. E. The samples were taken from their wastewater and the river where the waste was discarded with two replications. Direct measurement was carried out in the field by using water quality equipment to analyze pH, temperature, DO, and TDS. For other analysis, samples collected were preserved in refrigerator at 4 °C before laboratory testing was carried out to minimize microbiological decomposition of solids. Pollution variabels were analyzed by analysis of variance test (ANOVA) with 95% confidence level followed by turkey test. The results showed that there was no difference in pollution from temperature, DO, TDS, TSS, COD, and ammonia variables from 5 companies. Berried females of Macrobrachium nipponense were incubated under four different temperatures (20,23,26 and 28 ºC) and two types of tanks with different background coloration (dark and transparent tanks) to determine the best larval release and the post larvae survival were observed. The results show best larval release were 124 ind./L achieved at 26 ºC at dark color tanks, while 68 ind. / L larvae were released at the transparent color tank at the same temperature, while only 16 ind./L were released from berried females incubated at 20 ºC at dark color tanks and 6 ind./L at the transparent tanks. The best survival of larvae was 80 % at 23 ºC at dark color tanks and 75 % at transparent color tanks. Four stages for eggs development were discriminated based on color, size and eyes.

Background and purpose — There is no consensus on the association between global femoral offset (FO) and outcome after total hip arthroplasty (THA). We assessed the association between FO and patients’ reported hip function, quality of life, and abductor muscle strength. Patients and methods — We included 250 patients with unilateral hip osteoarthritis who underwent a THA. Before the operation, the patient’s reported hip function was evaluated with the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) index and quality of life was evaluated with EQ-5D. At 1-year follow-up, the same scores and also hip abductor muscle strength were measured. 222 patients were available for follow-up. These patients were divided into 3 groups according to the postoperative global FO of the operated hip compared to the contralateral hip, as measured on plain radiographs: the decreased FO group (more than 5 mm reduction), the restored FO group (within 5 mm restoration), and the increased FO group (more than 5 mm increment). The materials and substances required for sustainable water treatment by adsorption technique, are still being researched widely by distinguished classes of researchers. Thus, the need to synthesize substances that can effectively clean up pollutants from the environment cannot be overemphasized. So far, materials in bulk forms that are rich in carbon, such as biochar and varieties of activated carbon have been used for various adsorptive purposes. The use of bulk materials for such purposes are not efficient due to minimal surface areas available for adsorption. This study explores the adsorption task at nano dimension using carbon dots (CDs) from tapioca. The properties of carbon structure and its influence on the adsorptive efficacy of carbon nanoparticles were investigated by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HrTEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results implied carbon present in CDs are good adsorbents for effective adsorption of heavy metal ions (lead) with removal efficiency of 80.6% in aqueous environment. The adsorption process as explored by both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms have proven favorability of the adsorption process. Langmuir form two and three have correlation coefficients R2 at 0.9922 and 0.9912, respectively. The Freundlich isotherm confirms CDs as having defined surface heterogeneity and the exponential distribution of active sites. The adsorption of lead unto CDs obeyed the second order kinetic model with coefficient of determination, R2 of 0.9668 and 0.9996 at an initial lead concentration of 20 mg/L and 100 mg/L, respectively. The findings validated the efficiency of CDs derived from tapioca as an excellent material for further utilization in the environmental fields of wastewater pollution detection and clean up, bio-imaging, and chemical sensing applications.
