Mountain forests have a substantial protective function in preventing natural hazards, in part due to the presence of dead wood on the forest floor. Rates of deadwood accumulation have increased within the Alps and are predicted to rise further, due to natural disturbances. In particular, higher windthrow event frequencies are expected, primarily due to large-scale even-aged forest stands in many alpine regions combined with climate change. We quantified the rockfall protection effect of mountain forests with and without deadwood, in unprecedented detail, in experiments using two rock shapes with important hazard potential and masses of 200–3200 kg. Based on a multi-camera setup, pre- and post-experimentally retrieved high-resolution lidar data, and rock data measured in situ, we precisely reconstructed 63 trajectories. The principal parameters of interest describing the rockfall kinematics were retrieved for each trajectory. A total of 164 tree impacts and 55 deadwood impacts were observed, and the currently applied energy absorption curves – partially only derived theoretically – could consequently be corroborated or even expanded to a greater absorption performance of certain species than hitherto assumed. Standing trees, in general, and deadwood, in particular, were found to strongly impede the notorious lateral spreading of platy rocks. Platy rocks featured a shorter mean runout distance than their compact counterparts of similar weight, even in the absence of deadwood. These results indicate that the higher hazard potential of platy rocks compared with more compact rocks, previously postulated for open-field terrain, applies less to forested areas. Last, reproducing the experimental setting showcases how complex forest states can be treated within rockfall simulations. Overall, the results of this study highlight the importance of incorporating horizontal forest structures accurately in simulations in order to obtain realistic deposition patterns.

Studying how deadwood mitigates the rockfall hazard in mountain forests is key to understanding the influence of climate-induced disturbances on the protective capacity of mountain forests. Both experimental quantification and numerical process modeling are needed to address this question. Modeling provides detailed insights into the rock–deadwood interaction and can therefore be used to develop effective forest management strategies. Here, we introduce an automatic deadwood generator (ADG) for assessing the impact of fresh woody storm debris on the protective capacity of a forest stand against rockfall. The creation of various deadwood scenarios allows us to directly quantify the mitigation potential of deadwood. To demonstrate the functionality of the proposed ADG method, we compare deadwood log patterns, deadwood effective height, and mesoscale surface ruggedness observed in field surveys in a natural windthrow area with their simulated counterparts. Specifically, we consider two sites near Lake Klöntal, Switzerland, where a major windthrow event occurred in 2019. We perform rockfall simulations for the time (a) before, (b) directly after, and (c) 10 years after the windthrow event. We further compare the results with (d) a simulation with complete clearing of the thrown wood: in other words, a scenario with no standing forest remaining. We showcase an integration of deadwood into rockfall simulations with realistic deadwood configurations alongside a diameter at breast height (DBH)- and rot-fungi-dependent maximum deadwood breaking energy. Our results confirm the mitigation effect of deadwood, which significantly reduces the jump heights and velocities of 400 kg rocks. Our modeling results suggest that, even a decade after the windthrow event, deadwood has a stronger protective effect against rockfall than that provided by standing trees. We conclude that an ADG can contribute to the decision-making involved in forest and deadwood management after disturbances.

Forests are rockfall-protective ecological infrastructures as a significant amount of kinetic energy is absorbed during consecutive rock–tree impacts. Although many recent works have considered rock impacts with standing trees, the effect of lying deadwood in forests has not yet been considered thoroughly, either experimentally or numerically. Here, we present a complete examination of induced rockfall experiments with sensor-equipped, 45 kg, artificial rocks on a forested area in three different management stages. The trilogy is conducted in a spruce forest stand (i) in its original state of forest; (ii) after a logging operation with fresh, lying deadwood; and (iii) after the removal of the deadwood. The tests allow us to directly quantify the effect of fresh deadwood on overall rockfall risk for the same forest (slope, species) under three different conditions. The study yields quantitative results on the barrier efficiency of the deadwood logs as only 3.6 % of the rocks surpass the deadwood section. The mean run-out distance is reduced by 42 %. Conversely, the run-out distance increases by 17 % when the cleared stand is compared to the original forest. These results quantitatively confirm the benefits of nature-based mitigation measures integrated into forestry practice, whose detailed effect has to be scrutinized for higher rockfall energies. Based on the experimental results, we extended a modern rockfall code by three-dimensional deadwood logs to incorporate such complex but realistic forest boundary conditions.

This work focuses on the in-depth reconstruction of the full set of parameters of interest in single-block rockfall trajectories. A comprehensive understanding of rockfall trajectories holds the promise to enhance the application of numerical models for engineering hazard analysis. Such knowledge is equally important to investigate wider cascade problems in steep terrain. Here, we present a full four-dimensional trajectory reconstruction of the “Chant Sura” rockfall experiment performed with EOTA221 norm rocks. The data analysis allows a complete kinematic description of a rock's trajectory in real terrain and underscores the physical complexity of rock–ground interactions. In situ accelerometer and gyroscope data are combined with videogrammetric and unmanned aerial-systems mapping techniques to understand the role of rock rotations, ground penetration and translational scarring in rockfall motion. The exhaustive trajectory reconstruction provides information over the complete flight path such as translational velocity vectors, angular velocities, impact duration and forces, ballistic jump heights, and lengths. The experimental data provide insight into the basic physical processes detailing how rotating rocks of general shape penetrate, rebound and scar ground terrain. In future, the data will serve as a calibration basis to enhance numerical rockfall modelling.

The high prevalence of sleep-related disorders is well documented in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Given the association between physical activity (PA) and sleep in the typical populations, this study was the pilot study to examine this association through the parental report in this population. The total of forty-three individuals with DS (aged 14-55) participated in the present study. Parents reported on the questionnaires to measure different levels of PA and four factors of sleep-related disorders in adolescents and adults with DS. Our results indicate that age was positively associated with the frequency of "disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep". In addition, the levels of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) were negatively associated with the severity of "Features associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)". Further, the active group had lower parental reports of features associated with OSA compared with the insufficiently active group after controlling for anthropometric measures. Our study suggests moderate-to-vigorous exercise may reduce OSA severity in individuals with DS. Therefore, future support for recreational services should be provided to promote physical leisure activity that may reduce the onset of sleep disorders in this population.

This study was aimed at investigating the effectiveness of assisted therapy (ACT) on manual dexterity in older adults with Down syndrome (DS). Nine older participants with DS, aged 31-52 years old, completed a 30-min stationary cycling session, three times per week for eight weeks of ACT intervention, pedaling at 35% higher than voluntary speed. Another eight older participants with DS, aged 30-51 years old, participated in the voluntary cycling (VC) intervention, pedaling at voluntary speed, as the comparison group. Manual dexterity measured by the Purdue Pegboard Test, and outcome expectations measured by the Exercise Perception Scale, were tested before and after the interventions. After both exercise interventions, the results showed that the non-dominant hand and bimanual subtests of the Purdue Pegboard were significantly improved. The outcome expectations were elevated at marginally statistical level as well. It is speculated that continuous cycling exercise, VC and ACT, may stimulate peripheral sensory input to the motor areas that led to the improvements in manual dexterity and exercise perception. Even though the exact mechanisms are still unknown, the implication of our results showed that VC and ACT can improve manual dexterity in aging DS population.

This study was aimed at investigating the impact of music on exercise performance and affective response to exercise in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Twelve individuals with DS completed a treadmill walking protocol in both music and no music conditions. Heart rate (HR), walking steps, rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and enjoyment scores were measured in this study. Participants significantly walked more steps with increased exercise HR and percentage MaxHR achieved under music condition. It is speculated that the involvement of music may motivate participants with DS to exert more effort. However, RPE and enjoyment were not significantly affected by music. The positive effect of music may not be strong enough to interfere with peripheral sensory input since half the participants performed at a vigorous level. Still, the implication of our results showed that music could promote physical performance for health benefits in individuals with DS.

The necessity of promoting physical activity in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been emphasized for decades. One of the barriers to participate in physical activity for individuals with ASD is limited interest and motivation. Therefore, understanding the motivation to exercise in this population is important. The objective was to determine the effect of using contingent reinforcement in the form of watching a preferred DVD to increase duration of time pedalling on a stationary bicycle within their predetermined target heart rate zone (THRZ) in children with ASD. Using a crossover design, seven participants (11 2.7 years) who were diagnosed with ASD were randomly assigned to either Group A or B. Time spent pedalling on a bicycle within the THRZ was analysed using a linear mixed-effect model with Bonferroni adjustments. The results showed that the DVD intervention motivated children with ASD to exercise for more than 10 minutes in moderate to vigorous physical activity compared to when they were exercising without watching a DVD. This result is significant as number of studies have revealed that 10 minutes of exercise could bring improvements in activities of daily living such as behaviors and academic performance in school.

Deficits in motor performance have been well documented in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). However, only a few studies have focused on manipulative skills and older adults in this population. Given the associations between manipulative skills and daily living activities, more work is needed to examine the aging effect on individuals with DS. A total of 54 adults with DS participated in this study. The results indicated that older participants showed more lateralization than younger participants. They exhibited superior dominant hand preference compared to younger participants. In addition, participants with DS with high verbal ability had better performance in manual dexterity and handgrip force. Therefore, in the clinical setting, assessing mental age may help in identifying individuals with DS at a higher risk of motor impairment. Future work should examine additional determinants with a large sample size to understand the development of manipulative skills in individuals with DS. Furthermore, additional studies are needed to investigate the associations between mental age and other cognitive functions and motor performance in this population.

Alzheimer’s disease is prevalent in persons with Down syndrome (DS) as early as their 30s and presents as decreased social interaction, coordination, and physical activity. Therefore, changing attitudes and beliefs about exercise is key to increasing motivation for physical activity especially in middle-age adults with DS. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of Assisted Cycle Therapy (ACT) on self-efficacy and exercise perception in middle-age adults with Down syndrome (DS) following an exercise intervention three times a week for 8 weeks. Twelve participants were in the ACT group in which a motor assisted their cycling to be performed at least 30% faster than voluntary cycling (VC), 10 participants were in the voluntary cycling group, and two participants were in the no cycling (NC) group. The results showed that both exercise groups (i.e., ACT and VC) improved in their self-efficacy after the 8-week intervention. In addition, exercise perception improved following ACT, but not VC or NC. Our results are discussed with respect to their future implications for exercise in the DS population. The results can be attributed to differences in effort required by each intervention group as well as the neurotrophic factors that occur when muscle contractions create synaptic connections resulting in improvement in cognition and feelings of satisfaction.

Knee braces have been increasing in popularity as a means to support joint stability and promote the healing process. In order to enhance the fit, comfort, and design of knee braces, this study investigates knee shape deformations across four knee-bending angles from 0° to 90°. Using three-dimensional (3D) scanning technology, the knee contours of 50 Asian males aged between 22 and 33 were examined. The reliability of the 3D measurements was validated through comparisons with tape measurements on the actual body. The analysis revealed a stretch of the skin covering the patella bone with a notable vertical strain of 19% and horizontal stretching of 7%. The circumference along the muscle belly at the thigh (15 cm above the center of the patella) and at the calf (7.5 cm below the center of the patella) showed no significant changes with different bending angles, and can be used as an indicator for sizing of knee braces. However, at the patella bone level, the bending of the knee from 0° to 90° increased the knee circumference by 6.4%. The results from sectional analysis showed the asymmetry and the lateral shifting of the knee joint during bending. The findings offer guidelines for the design and optimization of knee braces to address knee deformations and individual body shape variations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) is one of the major contagious viruses and causes complicated respiratory issues, especially in young children. The sensitive and fast detection of hRSV is critical for taking the most effective actions. In the present study, rabbit antibodies against the hRSV nucleoprotein (NP) were developed using phage display technology. A female rabbit was immunized with an hRSV strain A2 recombinant NP. A Fab library was built and sorted during two successive panning rounds for strain B and the A2 NP (recombinant preparations), respectively. The choice of candidates was performed using ELISA on the two NP strains. The obtained library was 3 × 106 cfu/mL, with an insertion rate of >95%. The two panning rounds permitted an enrichment factor of 100. ELISA screening allowed us to obtain 28 NP-specific Fab candidates. Among them, 10 retained candidates were reformatted into rabbit full IgG; thereafter, pairing tests on the recombinant strains and native lysate samples were performed. After the pairing tests on the recombinant strains, 53 pairs were identified. Eleven pairs were identified as being able to detect RSVs from native lysates. This work presents new high-potential monoclonal antibodies mAbs (mAbs), which would benefit from lateral flow testing data with patient materials.

Background: To date, numbers of studies have indicated the important role of fine manual dexterity in typical and special populations. However, the relevant studies in Down's syndrome (DS) population is still limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the determinants of manual dexterity in adolescents and young adults with DS. Methods: Thirty participants with DS (22 males, 8 females, aged 13-31) were screened by anthropometric variables (i.e. sex, chronological age, verbal intelligence, body mass index), levels of physical activity, and sleep disorders, and were administered the Purdue Pegboard Test and the Choice Reaction Time Test. Measures of correlation, t-test and multiple regression model were used for data analysis. Results: It was indicated that sex and sleep-related disorders during the day explained 37.2% of the variance in the performance of the Purdue Pegboard Test. The additional of 9.7% can be explained the variance by adding reaction time test performance. Verbal intelligence had the negatively relation with the performance of non-Dominant Hand and Bimanual subtests of the Purdue Pegboard Test. Conclusion: This study suggested that sex, sleep disorder, and neuromotor function may be the important determinants of fine manual dexterity performance in adolescents and young adults with DS. In addition, the level of intelligence might also exert the effect on fine motor development in this population. In order to design effective interventions and optimize manual performance in individuals with DS, these possible determinants should be considered. Future research should be replicated with large sample size, different age groups, and validated measures of finger size, physical activity and sleep behaviors.

The aim of this research study was to examine the effects of Assisted Cycling Therapy (ACT) on adaptive/maladaptive behaviors, depression, and self-efficacy in adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). The participants were counterbalanced to either intervention groups of 1) Assisted Cycling Therapy (ACT), in which the participants' voluntary pedaling rates were augmented with a motor to ensure the maintenance of 80 rpm or greater 2) Voluntary Cycling (VC), in which participants cycled at their self-selected pedaling rate or 3) No Cycling (NC), in which the participants sat and watched a video. The ACT and VC groups exercised 3 days a week for 8 weeks for 30 min. Adaptive behavior was measured by the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale (VABS) II to analyze the changes in daily living skills and maladaptive behaviors, depression was measured by the Children's Depressive Inventory, and exercise perception and self-efficacy were measured by the PASE scale, pre and post interventions. The result of this study revealed that social coping skills (p = 0.001) and depression (p = 0.022) improved more after participating in ACT than VC or NC interventions. In addition, externalizing maladaptive behaviors (p = 0.023) improved pre and post ACT and VC interventions but not NC. Our results are discussed with respect to neurological mechanisms associated with our interventions and their effect on functioning in adolescents with DS.

Physical activity initiatives targeting the participation of all members of a school's community are proposed as partial solutions to getting children physically active for 60 minutes each day. Integrating whole-school programs can be a daunting task; however, in this article, we share tips from physical activity leaders at three schools and found that combining resources is a way to manage this task. This article briefly describes the CSPAP [Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program] and HSP [Healthy Schools Program] programs and presents suggestions for the successful integration of school-wide physical activity from school personnel with first-hand experience attempting this type of school culture change.

Background: The high prevalence of cognitive dysfunction is well documented in individuals with Down syndrome. However, only a few studies have focused on the effect of exercise on cognitive performance in this population. In particular, verbal fluency has been shown to be relevant to the early onset of Alzheimer's disease in individuals with Down syndrome. Thus, this study was aimed at investigating the relationship between acute exercise and verbal fluency in this population. Methods: It was a pre-post design. Twenty-eight participants (aged 14-31) were assigned to high-intensity exercise (i.e. 70-85% of predicted maximum heart rate) (N = 8), moderate-intensity exercise (i.e. 50-69% of predicted maximum heart rate) (N = 10) or attentional control (N = 10) groups. Two exercise groups walked on a treadmill using an incremental walking protocol, and the attentional control group watched a video for 20 min. Measures of verbal fluency (i.e. semantic fluency and phonetic fluency) were tested pre-intervention and post-intervention. Results: The result showed a quadric trend between semantic fluency and intensity of exercise. The improvement in cognitive performance on semantic fluency test was observed in the moderate-intensity exercise. However, neither a linear trend nor a quadric trend was seen in phonetic fluency. Conclusions: The result showed an inverted-U relationship between exercise intensity and semantic fluency. A larger sample size, testing time and more reliable psychophysiological measures (e.g. VO2max and neuroimaging technology), should be considered to explore the underlying mechanisms in this population.

This contribution explores the formation and evolution of hyper‐extended basins, associated with the early stage of core complex formation, controlled by low‐angle normal faults active at <30°. Based on a high‐resolution industrial 3D seismic reflection survey along the southern margin of the South China Sea (SCS) (Dangerous Grounds), we mapped and analyzed the 3D geometry of low‐angle normal fault systems and the related stratigraphy. Two main hyper‐extended basins were documented, filled by up to 6 km of sediments including pre‐ to post‐rift sequences. The observed normal faults on depth migrated seismic sections show an average dip angle of <30° and appear planar, characterized by continuous reflections with no clear steepening at depth and sole‐out on distinct decollement levels. Detailed fault surface mapping reveals the occurrence of km‐scale corrugations together with large wavelength undulation. The formation of these hyper‐extended basins is associated with polyphased syn‐rift infill during the development of the low‐angle normal faults. The first syn‐rift sequence appears as chaotic and discontinuous packages that has been dismembered and fragmented during the activity of low‐angle normal faults. The second syn‐rift package shows unexpected sedimentary wedges developing successively toward the footwall and the hangingwall. This geometry results from the interplay between the main low‐angle normal fault and antithetic faults defining a so‐called extensional fishtail. The deep structure of these basins shows nascent domes with limited evidence of magmatism. Eventually, these basins likely capture the earliest stage of core complex development in the proximal margin of the southern SCS. Abstract Rifted margins are the result of the successful process of thinning and breakup of the continental lithosphere leading to the formation of new oceanic lithosphere. Observations on rifted margins are now integrating an increasing amount of multi-channel seismic data and drilling of several Continent-Ocean Transitions. Based on large scale geometries and domains observed on high-quality multi-channel seismic data, this article proposes a classification reflecting the mechanical behavior of the crust from localized to diffuse deformation (strong/coupled to weak/decoupled mechanical behaviors) and magmatic intensity leading to breakup from magma-rich to magma-poor margins. We illustrate a simple classification based on mechanical behavior and magmatic production with examples of rifted margins. We propose a non-exhaustive list of forcing parameters that can control the initial rifting conditions but also their evolution through time. Therefore, rifted margins are not divided into opposing types, but described as a combination and continuum that can evolve through time and space.

Pterygium Colli or “palmate neck” is a congenital malformation that is most often part of a polimalformative syndrome. This deformity is a source of aesthetic and social embarrassment. Its correction is surgical. We present the case of a pterygium colli in a patient with Noonan syndrome. He had a significant excess of skin with posterior skin laxity, causing significant social discomfort and imposing a vicious attitude, the head bent forward. We performed a posterolateral resection of this excess by resecting two posterior triangular flaps with a resulting t-shaped scar. The results were satisfactory; the excess skin was almost completely resorbed with minimal scarring. However, this technique did not correct the low lateral hairline implantation, and there were still two lateral flaps for which the patient did not wish to have a repeat surgery.

Purpose: Many observations and anecdotes have suggested that individuals with Down syndrome (DS) love music, specifically moving to music. The purpose of this study, with the assumption that the music makes people with DS dance showing more movement than general public's, is to observe the change in movement patterns of people with DS while they dance. Methods: The present study videotaped 10 individuals with DS and 10 mental age-matched (MA) participants dancing in response to five different types of music (e.g. rock fast, rock slow, classical, jazz, pop). Results: Our preliminary results suggest that individuals with DS had significantly more body sway than MA participants. In addition, individuals with DS were more active to the music than MA participants. However, no motor timing deficit was evident. Conclusions: This suggests that individuals with DS actively maintain their posture position in the challenging condition. Furthermore, they clearly enjoyed listening to the music and dancing. Based on our results, we suggest that more research need to be conducted examining the effects of dancing program on postural control, and timing in this population.

Given the high prevalence of sleep problems and fine motor deficits that have been reported in persons with Down syndrome (DS), this study was to investigate the effect of sleep-related problems occurring during the day on fine motor function (i.e. manual dexterity and handgrip strength) in persons with DS. We also tested the moderating role of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in the link between sleep-related problems occurring during the day and fine motor function. It was hypothesised that subtle sleep-related problems occurring during the day would significantly predict fine motor performance. Fifty-two persons with DS, aged 13–54, participated and caregivers completed a sleep questionnaire for their children with DS. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated a greater frequency of sleep-related problems occurring during the day significantly predicted greater manual dexterity deficits. Results also suggested that OSA was the moderator for the association between sleep-related problems occurring during the day and manual dexterity. This study has highlighted the importance of exploring sleep problems that might impair fine motor performance for the DS population in their everyday lives. Additional studies are needed to develop effective interventions to promote sleep hygiene and fine motor development in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
