Abstract

HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) Pathfinder is a space-borne mission based on a constellation of six nano-satellites flying in a low-Earth orbit (LEO). The 3U CubeSats, to be launched in early 2025, host miniaturized instruments with a hybrid Silicon Drift Detector/GAGG:Ce scintillator photodetector system, sensitive to X-rays and gamma-rays in a large energy band. HERMES will operate in conjunction with Australian Space Industry Responsive Intelligent Thermal (SpIRIT) 6U CubeSat, launched in December 2023. HERMES will probe the temporal emission of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), ensuring a fast transient localization in a field of view of several steradians exploiting the triangulation technique. HERMES intrinsically modular transient monitoring experiment represents a keystone capability to complement the next generation of gravitational wave experiments. 2. Leisure practices of geological explorers of Western Siberia based on the narratives of pioneers (1950s–1960s)

Abstract

In this paper, the main leisure activities of the geologists, identified by the author on the basis of collected interviews with those involved at the initial stage of geological explorations in Tyumen Oblast during the 1950s–1960s, are presented. The organisation of the leisure activities, as well as the complex development of the social and domestic sphere amongst the geological prospectors, in one of the perspective regions in terms of the availability of hydrocarbons, was not amongst the priorities of the state at the dawn of the oil exploration and was a prerogative of the geological community. The trade unions of geologists, who were overseeing social matters, including leisure activities, due to low funding and a lack of adequate personnel and material-and-technical potential did not always successfully cope with the tasks set. The leveling of the shortcomings in this development was imposed on the initiative of the oil prospectors themselves, who were interested in improving conditions of their stay at the work sites. It is noted that the initiatives of the geologists expanded the possibilities of organized forms of leisure activities both at stationary places of residence and ’in the field’. The variability of leisure activities at the locations of geological parties, including residential places, was significantly higher than in the places of work ― ‘in the field’. However, even in conditions of remoteness from the centres of ‘culture’, oil prospectors carried out improvement of the quality and diversity of their leisure time on their own. The demand for and variability of the leisure practices were taking place in line with the ‘concept of culture’, depended on the degree of qualification and level of education of the specialists, personal development and attitude of the employees, and their environment. The implementation of leisure practices was necessitated by the need for compensating limited opportunities of the socio-cultural environment against the background of the dominance of the strenuous daily work, as well as the confrontation in the archaisation of the daily routine due to the prevalence of the deviant forms of behaviour. Many changes emanating from the oil prospectors and taking place in the socio-cultural sphere later took root and became an asset of the local population. The initiative of the geologists made it possible to expand and diversify leisure practices under the lack of opportunities and financial support of the social sphere, which facilitated positive changes in the daily life of the geologists themselves and population of the places where the oil prospectors were staying.

Abstract

The high time resolution observations of the X-ray sky hold the key to a number of diagnostics of fundamental physics, some of which are unaccessible to other types of investigations, such as those based on imaging and spectroscopy. Revealing strong gravitational field effects, measuring the mass and spin of black holes and the equation of state of ultradense matter are among the goals of such observations. At present prospects for future, non-focused X-ray timing experiments following the exciting age of RXTE/PCA are uncertain. Technological limitations are unavoidably faced in the conception and development of experiments with effective area of several square meters, as needed in order to meet the scientific requirements. We are developing large-area monolithic Silicon Drift Detectors offering high time and energy resolution at room temperature, which require modest resources and operation complexity (e.g., read-out) per unit area. Based on the properties of the detector and read-out electronics that we measured in the lab, we developed a realistic concept for a very large effective area mission devoted to X-ray timing in the 2-30 keV energy range. Abstract

A detailed study of charge collection efficiency has been performed on the Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) of the ALICE experiment. Three different methods to study the collected charge as a function of the drift time have been implemented. The first approach consists in measuring the charge at different injection distances moving an infrared laser by means of micrometric step motors. The second method is based on the measurement of the charge injected by the laser at fixed drift distance and varying the drift field, thus changing the drift time. In the last method, the measurement of the charge deposited by atmospheric muons is used to study the charge collection efficiency as a function of the drift time. The three methods gave consistent results and indicated that no charge loss during the drift is observed for the sensor types used in 99% of the SDD modules mounted on the ALICE Inner Tracking System. The atmospheric muons have also been used to test the effect of the zero-suppression applied to reduce the data size by erasing the counts in cells not passing the thresholds for noise removal. As expected, the zero suppression introduces a dependence of the reconstructed charge as a function of drift time because it cuts the signal in the tails of the electron clouds enlarged by diffusion effects. These measurements allowed also to validate the correction for this effect extracted from detailed Monte Carlo simulations of the detector response and applied in the offline data reconstruction.

Abstract

Increasing scales of construction, reconstruction and major renovation work make it possible to develop a color image for the urban environment, apply an integrated approach to city colorscape treatment and harmonize the existing environment. In all of the above aspects, polychromy plays an important role. The article discusses a solution to the problem of automated assessment of architectural polychromy through the development of an information system. Currently, a large variety of programs, applications and services are available for determining the basic color scheme. We have reviewed a number of such services in order to identify both the disadvantages and advantages of each of them and develop an application that would help professionals do their work on project documentation quickly and unrestrictedly.

11. EVALUATION OF THE BEARING CAPACITY OF A 12-METER TRUSS FROM LIGHT STEEL THIN-WALL PROFILES

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to determine the maximum bearing capacity, deformations and maximum deflections of rods from cold-formed truss profiles 12 m long. The truss had changes, the bracing profiles changed, and the steel grade changed, after which it was clear that their bearing capacity and deflection were changing. For static calculation, the SolidWorks Simulation program was used. All maximum values were identified. As a result, it was shown that with a change in the section of the profile and the highest grade of steel, the bearing capacity increases by 2.4 times, and the deflection at one load has a difference of 1 mm. The results obtained show that the developed truss provides the bearing capacity and deformability.

Abstract

Silicon drift detectors (SDDs), due to their collection electrode geometry, have excellent noise performance and are well suited for low-energy X-ray spectroscopy applications. On the other hand these detectors, when dedicated to low energy X-ray spectroscopy, have a small sensitive area (from few square millimeters up to one square centimeter) to reduce the leakage current and its impact on the energy resolution. Because of this limitation they are rarely used in applications where large sensitive surfaces are required. We present the characterization of the spectroscopic performance of a very large sensitive area SDD (about 53 [cm.sup.2]) that has been realized in the frame of the LHC-ALICE experiment. We studied the energy resolution of the detector analyzing its dependence on both biasing conditions and temperature to evaluate the contribution of the different noise sources exploiting their relation with the shaping time. The experimental results obtained with [sup.241]Am and [sup.55]Fe sources show that the goal of a high energy resolution combined with large sensitive areas can be achieved. Abstract

HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is a constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting simple but innovative X-ray detectors, characterized by a large energy band and excellent temporal resolution, and thus optimized for the monitoring of Cosmic High Energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts and the electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Wave Events, and for the determination of their positions. The projects are funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and by the Italian Space Agency, and by the European Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Grant Agreement No. 821896. HERMES-TP/SP is an in-orbit demonstration, that should be tested starting from 2022. Abstract

The HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites -- Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is an in-orbit demonstration of the so-called distributed astronomy concept. Conceived as a mini-constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting a new miniaturized detector, HERMES-TP/SP aims at the detection and accurate localisation of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts. The large energy band, the excellent temporal resolution and the wide field of view that characterize the detectors of the constellation represent the key features for the next generation high-energy all-sky monitor with good localisation capabilities that will play a pivotal role in the future of Multi-messenger Astronomy. In this work, we will describe in detail the temporal techniques that allow the localisation of bright transient events taking advantage of their almost simultaneous observation by spatially spaced detectors. Abstract

A synchrotron radiation beamline devoted to medical imaging has been built by the SYRMEP collaboration at Elettra in Trieste, Italy, and is now in operation. The SYRMEP imaging system is based on the combination of a monochromatic, laminar X-ray beam, with a laminar, high-efficiency pixel silicon detector. To image soft tissue, including small, low-contrast details, as in mammography, beam energies should be chosen in the range from 15 keV to 30 keV and the detector should be capable of single-photon counting. The SYRMEP beamline originates from a bending magnet light port and consists basically of a Be window, a slit system and a Si(1,1,1) crystal monochromator. The experimental area is equipped with a radiation flux monitor, a sample movement stage, and a positioning system holding the silicon detector. Images are obtained by keeping the detector stationary with respect to the beam and by scanning the sample through the beam itself. The current detector is a linear array of 200x300 [[[micro]meter].sup.2] pixels, each coupled to its electronic counting chain on a custom VLSI read-out chip. We present a summary of beam studies, and digital images of standard RMI 160 and RMI 180 Ackermann Mammographic phantoms. Results show the high contrast resolution and the large dynamic range which constitute the defining characteristics of the SYRMEP imaging system.

Abstract

A silicon strip detector for the SYRMEP (SYncrotron Radiation for MEdical Physics) experiment has been designed and realised. The main features of this detector are AC-coupling through integrated coupling capacitors, DC biasing by means of a gated punch-through structure, bulk contact on the junction side through a forward-biased [p.sup.+] implant and integrated fan-in on active silicon. Results of laboratory tests of the detector parameters, allowing a thorough evaluation of the technological solutions employed, are presented. The functionality of the detectors and the charge collection linearity have been tested with different [Gamma] sources, using hybrid, low-noise front-end electronics.
