1. Exploring the spatial segmentation of housing markets from online listings

Abstract

The real estate market shows an inherent connection to space. Real estate agencies unevenly operate and specialize across space, price and type of properties, thereby segmenting the market into submarkets. We introduce here a methodology based on multipartite networks to detect the spatial segmentation emerging from data on housing online listings. Considering the spatial information of the listings, we build a bipartite network that connects agencies and spatial units. This bipartite network is projected into a network of spatial units, whose connections account for similarities in the agency ecosystem. We then apply clustering methods to this network to segment markets into spatially-coherent regions, which are found to be robust across different clustering detection algorithms, discretization of space and spatial scales, and across countries with case studies in France and Spain. This methodology addresses the long-standing issue of housing market segmentation, relevant in disciplines such as urban studies and spatial economics, and with implications for policymaking., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

2. Assessing the similarity of continuous gravitational-wave signals to narrow instrumental artifacts

Abstract

Continuous gravitational-wave signals (CWs) are long-lasting quasi-monochromatic gravitational-wave signals expected to be emitted by rapidly-rotating non-axisymmetric neutron stars. Depending on the rotational frequency and sky location of the source, certain CW signals may behave in a similar manner to narrow-band artifacts present in ground-based interferometric detectors. Part of the detector-characterisation tasks in the current generation of interferometric detectors (Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo, and KAGRA) aim at understanding the origin of these narrow artifacts, commonly known as ``spectral lines''. It is expected that similar tasks will continue after the arrival of next-generation detectors (e.g. Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer). Typically, a fraction of the observed lines in a given detector can be associated to one or more instrumental causes; others, however, have an unknown origin. In this work, we assess the similarity of CW signals to spectral lines in order to understand whether a CW may be mistaken for a noise artifact. Abstract

The radiative corrections to the $\tau^-\to (P_1P_2)^-\nu_\tau$ ($P_{1,2}=\pi, K$) decays are calculated for the first time including the structure-dependent real photon corrections, which are obtained using Resonance Chiral Theory. Our results, whose uncertainty is dominated by the model-dependence of the resummation of the radiative corrections and the missing virtual structure-dependent contributions, allow for precise tests of CKM unitarity, lepton flavour universality and non-standard interactions., Comment: 37 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables. Abstract

The sensitivity of the rare decays $\eta^{(\prime)}\to\pi^{0}\gamma\gamma$ and $\eta^{\prime}\to\eta\gamma\gamma$ to signatures of a leptophobic $B$ boson in the MeV-GeV mass range is analyzed in this work. By adding an explicit $B$-boson resonance exchange, $\eta\to B\gamma\to\pi^{0}\gamma\gamma$, to the Standard Model contributions from vector and scalar meson exchanges, and employing experimental data for the associated branching ratios, it allows us to improve the current constraints on the $B$-boson mass $m_{B}$ and coupling to Standard Model particles $\alpha_{B}$. From these constraints and the analysis of the available experimental $\gamma\gamma$ invariant mass distribution, we show that a $B$-boson signature in the resonant mass range $m_{\pi^{0}}\lesssim m_{B}\lesssim m_{\eta}$ is strongly suppressed and would be very difficult to experimentally identify, assuming that the leptophobic $B$ boson only decays to Standard Model particles. In contrast, the limits outside this mass window are less stringent and the corresponding $t$- and $u$-channel signatures may still be observable in the data, as it occurs with the nonresonant Standard Model $\rho$, $\omega$ and $\phi$ meson exchanges. In addition, we make use of experimental data from the $\eta^{\prime}\to\pi^{0}\gamma\gamma$ and $\eta^{\prime}\to\eta\gamma\gamma$ decays to explore larger $B$-boson masses. Our results are relevant for the $B$-boson search programs at existing and forthcoming light-meson facilities, such as KLOE(-II) and Jefferson Lab Eta Factory experiments., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 1 table; v2 includes a discussion of the uncertainty of the Standard Model estimate and an improvement in the overall presentation

Abstract

Just as Lascar's notion of abstract rank axiomatizes the U-rank, we propose axioms for the ranks $SU^d$ and $SU^f$, the foundation ranks of dividing and forking. We study the relationships between these axioms. As with superstable, we characterize supersimple types and theories based on the existence of these ranks. We show that the U-rank is the foundation rank of the Lascar-splitting independence relationship. We also provide an alternative definition of SUd similar to the original definition of U. Finally, we check that if in the standard characterizations of simple and supersimple we change the non-forking independence for the non-lascar-splitting independence, we characterize stable and superstable.

Abstract

In this work we investigate the prospect of observing new-physics signatures via $C\!P$ violation in $\eta^{(\prime)}\to\pi^0\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\eta^\prime\to\eta\mu^+\mu^-$ decays at the REDTOP experiment. We make use of the SMEFT to parametrise the new-physics $C\!P$-violating effects and find that the projected REDTOP statistics are not competitive with respect to nEDM experiments. This reasserts the $\eta\to\mu^+\mu^-$ process as the most promising channel to find $C\!P$-violation at this experimental facility., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, 1 table; v2 includes a comment about the neutron EDM constraint and possible accidental Wilson coefficient cancellations

Abstract

BackgroundGuidelines recommend measuring blood pressure (BP) in both arms, adopting the higher arm readings for diagnosis and management. Data to support this recommendation are lacking. We evaluated associations of higher and lower arm systolic BPs with diagnostic and treatment thresholds, and prognosis in hypertension, using data from the Inter-arm Blood Pressure Difference-Individual Participant Data Collaboration.MethodsOne-stage multivariable Cox regression models, stratified by study, were used to examine associations of higher or lower reading arm BPs with cardiovascular mortality, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular events, in individual participant data meta-analyses pooled from 23 cohorts. Cardiovascular events were modelled for Framingham and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk scores. Model fit was compared throughout using Akaike information criteria. Proportions reclassified across guideline recommended intervention thresholds were also compared.ResultsWe analyzed 53 172 participants: mean age 60 years; 48% female. Abstract

Contracting cancer typically induces a state of terror among the individuals who are affected. Exploring how chemotherapy and anxiety work together to affect the speed at which cancer cells multiply and the immune system’s response model is necessary to come up with ways to stop the spread of cancer. This paper proposes a mathematical model to investigate the impact of psychological scare and chemotherapy on the interaction of cancer and immunity. The proposed model is accurately described. The focus of the model’s dynamic analysis is to identify the potential equilibrium locations. According to the analysis, it is possible to establish three equilibrium positions. The stability analysis reveals that all equilibrium points consistently exhibit stability under the defined conditions. The bifurcations occurring at the equilibrium sites are derived. Specifically, we obtained transcritical, pitchfork, and saddle-node bifurcation. Numerical simulations are employed to validate the theoretical study and ascertain the minimum therapy dosage necessary for eradicating cancer in the presence of psychological distress, thereby mitigating harm to patients. Fear could be a significant contributor to the spread of tumors and weakness of immune functionality.

Abstract

Optic nerve sheath meningocele is an enlargement of the sheath itself, consisting of a collection of cerebrospinal fluid along the perineural space. It should be considered primary if it is not associated with orbital–cerebral neoplasm or with cranio-orbital junction malformations. We report three cases of bilateral primary idiopathic optic nerve sheath meningocele, two of them with gradual vision loss. The first case presented a history of monocular blurred vision of the right eye and headache. It was initially treated with acetazolamide without any improvement, after which optic nerve sheath fenestration was required. The second case showed intermittent binocular diplopia with central 24-2 perimetry defects in the left eye. The third case was first presented as a subacute bilateral conjunctivitis with a suspected orbital pseudotumor. An incidental bilateral optic nerve sheath meningocele was found in the orbital imaging, being totally asymptomatic. In all the cases, orbital and cranial magnetic resonance with contrast and fat suppression was crucial in the diagnosis.

The objective of this research is to examine the impact of organized training interventions on the football agility of under-15 players at SSB Muspan. The main goal is to compare the Football Agility Score (FAS) values obtained from initial and post-training evaluations, taking into account various agility dynamics, real-world significance, and personalized reactions. Participants were subjected to a thorough agility assessment both before and after a predetermined training program, during which distances and timings were measured and recorded. The FAS, determined by multiplying the ratio of distance to time by a fixed factor, was used as a precise quantitative indicator of agility. The research used rigorous analysis to reveal the subtle effects of the training program on agility, taking into account characteristics such as quick changes in direction, acceleration, and deceleration. The comparison research showed a significant rise in post-training FAS values, suggesting a beneficial impact on participants' football agility. Abstract

Sideritis royoi is found in the rocky limestone habitats of the Port Massif (southern Catalonia, Spain). The species was first collected by the local botanist Lluís de Torres in the late part of the 20th century, but the specimens have remained unidentified positively in herbaria for over 40 years. Sideritis royoi likely belongs to section Sideritis subsection Hyssopifoliae and shows some morphological affinities with the relatively widespread South European species S. hyssopifolia L., but it differs from this species because it has subspinescent upper leaves, the main surfaces of its leaves are glabrous or glabrescent, the main abaxial surface of its bracts is without eglandular hairs, and due to the fact that it has shorter inflorescences. Weaker similarities have also been observed with some species belonging to S. subsection Fruticulosae Obón & D.Rivera. In this paper, a description for the new orophilous species is provided, along with a detailed illustration, field photographs, and a comparison with closely related species. We include an assessment of its conservation status and a dichotomous key for the identification of all the species of Sideritis subsection Hyssopifoliae.

Abstract

Abstract The ability of marine bacteria to direct their movement in response to chemical gradients influences inter-species interactions, nutrient turnover, and ecosystem productivity. While many bacteria are chemotactic towards small metabolites, marine organic matter is predominantly composed of large molecules and polymers. Yet, the signalling role of these large molecules is largely unknown. Using in situ and laboratory-based chemotaxis assays, we show that marine bacteria are strongly attracted to the abundant algal polysaccharides laminarin and alginate. Unexpectedly, these polysaccharides elicited stronger chemoattraction than their oligo- and monosaccharide constituents. Furthermore, chemotaxis towards laminarin was strongly enhanced by dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), another ubiquitous algal-derived metabolite. Our results indicate that DMSP acts as a methyl donor for marine bacteria, increasing their gradient detection capacity and facilitating their access to polysaccharide patches. We demonstrate that marine bacteria are capable of strong chemotaxis towards large soluble polysaccharides and uncover a new ecological role for DMSP in enhancing this attraction. These navigation behaviours may contribute to the rapid turnover of polymers in the ocean, with important consequences for marine carbon cycling.

RRULES is presented as an improvement and optimization over RULES, a simple inductive learning algorithm for extracting IF-THEN rules from a set of training examples. RRULES optimizes the algorithm by implementing a more effective mechanism to detect irrelevant rules, at the same time that checks the stopping conditions more often. This results in a more compact rule set containing more general rules which prevent overfitting the training set and obtain a higher test accuracy. This paper presents our submission to SemEval-2021 Task 5: Toxic Spans Detection. The purpose of this task is to detect the spans that make a text toxic, which is a complex labour for several reasons. Firstly, because of the intrinsic subjectivity of toxicity, and secondly, due to toxicity not always coming from single words like insults or offends, but sometimes from whole expressions formed by words that may not be toxic individually. Following this idea of focusing on both single words and multi-word expressions, we study the impact of using a multi-depth DistilBERT model, which uses embeddings from different layers to estimate the final per-token toxicity. Our quantitative results show that using information from multiple depths boosts the performance of the model. Abstract

In theories with a warped extra dimension, composite fermions, as e.g. the right-handed top quark, can be very strongly coupled to Kaluza-Klein (KK) fields. In particular, the KK gluons in the presence of such composite fields become very broad resonances, thus remarkably modifying their experimental signatures. We have computed the pole mass and the pole width of the KK gluon, triggered by its interaction with quarks, as well as the prediction for proton-proton cross-sections using the full propagator and compared it with that obtained from the usual Breit-Wigner approximation. We compare both approaches, along with the existing experimental data from ATLAS and CMS, for the $t\bar t$, $t\bar t W$, $t\bar t Z$, $t\bar t H$, and $t\bar t t\bar t$ channels. We have found differences between the two approaches of up to about 100%, highlighting that the effect of broad resonances can be dramatic on present, and mainly future, experimental searches. The channel $t\bar t t\bar t$ is particularly promising because the size of the cross-section signal is of the same order of magnitude as the Standard Model prediction, and future experimental analyses in this channel, especially for broad resonances, can shed light on the nature of possible physics beyond the Standard Model., Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures; v2 includes additional references and correct units for cross-section on vertical axis of Fig. 14

Abstract

A technique for solving the one-port closed coaxial transmission line sample holder scattering equation for complex permittivity inversion for lossy materials is presented. A non-linear least-squares procedure is used for the determination of parameters for the specification of the spectral functional form of the complex permittivity. The method allows for accurate retrieval of many low- and high-permittivity dielectric materials in the frequency range of 1 GHz to 3 GHz inserted into the coaxial cell. Using this method, the complex permittivity of a number of liquids and a Maltese soil known as Bajjad soil have been extracted by measurements using a short terminated coaxial transmission line sample holder. The proposed novel inversion method is mainly based on the reflection coefficient of the test material. The measured results of the complex permittivity of liquid dielectrics such as ethanol, methanol, and TX100 are validated and compared with previously published data obtained from measurements made by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) using a two-port measurement setup made with the same commercial coaxial transmission line sample holder used in the one-port setup. Since the technique allows broadband measurements, it has been used to characterise the soil dielectric spectrum in the frequency range of 1–3 GHz, which is also compared with results from a two-port setup of the same coaxial line. The experimental results are a validation of the proposed approach for different types of materials.

Abstract

Loss of genetic variability is an increasing challenge in tree breeding programs due to the repeated use of a reduced number of founder genotypes. However, in almond, little is known about the genetic variability in current breeding stocks, although several cases of inbreeding depression have been reported. To gain insights into the genetic structure in modern breeding programs worldwide, marker-verified pedigree data of 220 almond cultivars and breeding selections were analyzed. Inbreeding coefficients, pairwise relatedness, and genetic contribution were calculated for these genotypes. The results reveal two mainstream breeding lines based on three cultivars: "Tuono", "Cristomorto", and "Nonpareil". Descendants from "Tuono" or "Cristomorto" number 76 (sharing 34 descendants), while "Nonpareil" has 71 descendants. The mean inbreeding coefficient of the analyzed genotypes was 0.041, with 14 genotypes presenting a high inbreeding coefficient, over 0.250. Breeding programs from France, the USA, and Spain showed inbreeding coefficients of 0.075, 0.070, and 0.037, respectively. According to their genetic contribution, modern cultivars from Israel, France, the USA, Spain, and Australia trace back to a maximum of six main founding genotypes. Among the group of 65 genotypes carrying the Sf allele for self-compatibility, the mean relatedness coefficient was 0.125, with "Tuono" as the main founding genotype (24.7% of total genetic contribution). The results broaden our understanding about the tendencies followed in almond breeding over the last 50 years and will have a large impact into breeding decision-making process worldwide. Increasing current genetic variability is required in almond breeding programs to assure genetic gain and continuing breeding progress.
