Abstract

We report limits on WIMP dark matter derived from three years of data collected by the COSINE-100 experiment with NaI(Tl) crystals, achieving an improved energy threshold of 0.7 keV. This lowered threshold enhances sensitivity in the sub-GeV mass range, extending the reach for direct detection of low-mass dark matter. Although no excess of WIMP-like events was observed, the increased sensitivity enabled a model-independent comparison between the expected WIMP signal rate-based on mass limits from our data-and DAMA's reported modulation amplitude. Our findings strongly disfavor the DAMA signal as originating from WIMP interactions, fully excluding DAMA/LIBRA 3$\sigma$ allowed regions and providing enhanced WIMP mass limits by an order of magnitude in the spin-independent model compared to previous results. In the spin-dependent model, cross-section upper limits were obtained in the mass range [0.1-5.0] GeV/c$^2$, with additional sensitivity to sub-GeV WIMPs through the inclusion of the Migdal effect. These results represent substantial progress in low-mass dark matter exploration and reinforce constraints on the longstanding DAMA claim.

2. Pattern-Recognition Processes of First-Grade Students: An Explorative Eye-Tracking Study

Abstract

Recognizing patterns is an essential skill in early mathematics education. However, first graders often have difficulties with tasks such as extending patterns of the form ABCABC. Studies show that this pattern-recognition ability is a good predictor of later pre-algebraic skills and mathematical achievement in general, or the development of mathematical difficulties on the other hand. To be able to foster children's pattern-recognition ability, it is crucial to investigate and understand their pattern-recognition processes early on. However, only a few studies have investigated the processes used to recognize patterns and how these processes are adapted to different patterns. These studies used external observations or relied on children's self-reports, yet young students often lack the ability to properly report their strategies. This paper presents the results of an empirical study using eye-tracking technology to investigate the pattern-recognition processes of 22 first-grade students. In particular, we investigated students with and without the risk of developing mathematical difficulties. The analyses of the students' eye movements reveal that the students used four different processes to recognize patterns--a finding that refines knowledge about pattern-recognition processes from previous research. In addition, we found that for patterns with different units of repeat (i.e. ABABAB versus ABCABCABC), the pattern-recognition processes used differed significantly for students at risk of developing mathematical difficulties but not for students without such risk. Our study contributes to a better understanding of the pattern-recognition processes of first-grade students, laying the foundation for enhanced, targeted support, especially for students at risk of developing mathematical difficulties.

Abstract

For over 25 years, the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has claimed to observe an annual modulation signal, suggesting the existence of dark matter interactions. However, no other experiments have replicated their result using different detector materials. To address this puzzle, the COSINE-100 collaboration conducted a model-independent test using 106 kg of sodium iodide as detectors, the same target material as DAMA/LIBRA. Analyzing data collected over 6.4 years, with improved energy calibration and time-dependent background description, we found no evidence of an annual modulation signal, challenging the DAMA/LIBRA result with a confidence level greater than 3$\sigma$. This finding represents a significant step toward resolving the long-standing debate surrounding DAMA/LIBRA's dark matter claim, indicating that the observed modulation is unlikely to be caused by dark matter interactions.

Abstract

COSINE-100 is a direct dark matter search experiment, with the primary goal of testing the annual modulation signal observed by DAMA/LIBRA, using the same target material, NaI(Tl). In previous analyses, we achieved the same 1 keV energy threshold used in the DAMA/LIBRA's analysis that reported an annual modulation signal with 11.6$\sigma$ significance. In this article, we report an improved analysis that lowered the threshold to 0.7 keV, thanks to the application of Multi-Layer Perception network and a new likelihood parameter with waveforms in the frequency domain. The lower threshold would enable a better comparison of COSINE-100 with new DAMA results with a 0.75 keV threshold and account for differences in quenching factors. Furthermore the lower threshold can enhance COSINE-100's sensitivity to sub-GeV dark matter searches.

Abstract

COSINE-100 aims to conclusively test the claimed dark matter annual modulation signal detected by DAMA/LIBRA collaboration. DAMA/LIBRA has released updated analysis results by lowering the energy threshold to 0.75 keV through various upgrades. They have consistently claimed to have observed the annual modulation. In COSINE-100, it is crucial to lower the energy threshold for a direct comparison with DAMA/LIBRA, which also enhances the sensitivity of the search for low-mass dark matter, enabling COSINE-100 to explore this area. Therefore, it is essential to have a precise and quantitative understanding of the background spectrum across all energy ranges. This study expands the background modeling from 0.7 to 4000 keV using 2.82 years of COSINE-100 data. The modeling has been improved to describe the background spectrum across all energy ranges accurately. Assessments of the background spectrum are presented, considering the nonproportionality of NaI(Tl) crystals at both low and high energies and the characteristic X-rays produced by the interaction of external backgrounds with materials such as copper. Additionally, constraints on the fit parameters obtained from the alpha spectrum modeling fit are integrated into this model. These improvements are detailed in the paper.

Abstract

Cosmic ray muons prove valuable across various fields, from particle physics experiments to non-invasive tomography, thanks to their high flux and exceptional penetrating capability. Utilizing a scintillator detector, one can effectively study the topography of mountains situated above tunnels and underground spaces. The Hankuk Atmospheric-muon Wide Landscaping (HAWL) project successfully charts the mountainous region of eastern Korea by measuring cosmic ray muons with a detector in motion. The real-time muon flux measurement shows a tunnel length accuracy of 6.0 %, with a detectable overburden range spanning from 8 to 400 meter-water-equivalent depth. Abstract

We present a comprehensive study of the nonproportionality of NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors within the context of dark matter search experiments. Our investigation, which integrates COSINE-100 data with supplementary $\gamma$ spectroscopy, measures light yields across diverse energy levels from full-energy $\gamma$ peaks produced by the decays of various isotopes. These $\gamma$ peaks of interest were produced by decays supported by both long and short-lived isotopes. Analyzing peaks from decays supported only by short-lived isotopes presented a unique challenge due to their limited statistics and overlapping energies, which was overcome by long-term data collection and a time-dependent analysis. A key achievement is the direct measurement of the 0.87 keV light yield, resulting from the cascade following electron capture decay of $^{22}$Na from internal contamination. This measurement, previously accessible only indirectly, deepens our understanding of NaI(Tl) scintillator behavior in the region of interest for dark matter searches. Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

COSINE-100 is a dark matter direct detection experiment with 106 kg NaI(Tl) as the target material. 210Pb and daughter isotopes are a dominant background in the WIMP region of interest and are detected via beta decay and alpha decay. Analysis of the alpha channel complements the background model as observed in the beta/gamma channel. We present the measurement of the quenching factors and Monte Carlo simulation results and activity quantification of the alpha decay components of the COSINE-100 NaI(Tl) crystals. The data strongly indicate that the alpha decays probabilistically undergo two possible quenching factors but require further investigation. The fitted results are consistent with independent measurements and improve the overall understanding of the COSINE-100 backgrounds. Furthermore, the half-life of 216Po has been measured to be 143.4 +/- 1.2 ms, which is consistent with and more precise than recent measurements.

Abstract

We report the results of a search for inelastic scattering of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) off $^{127}$I nuclei using NaI(Tl) crystals with a data exposure of 97.7 kg$\cdot$years from the COSINE-100 experiment. The signature of inelastic WIMP-$^{127}$I scattering is a nuclear recoil accompanied by a 57.6 keV $\gamma$-ray from the prompt deexcitation, producing a more energetic signal compared to the typical WIMP nuclear recoil signal. We found no evidence for this inelastic scattering signature and set a 90 $\%$ confidence level upper limit on the WIMP-proton spin-dependent, inelastic scattering cross section of $1.2 \times 10^{-37} {\rm cm^{2}}$ at the WIMP mass 500 ${\rm GeV/c^{2}}$., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2104.03537

Abstract

We search for energetic electron recoil signals induced by boosted dark matter (BDM) from the galactic center using the COSINE-100 array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The signal would be an excess of events with energies above 4 MeV over the well-understood background. Because no excess of events are observed in a 97.7 kg$\cdot$years exposure, we set limits on BDM interactions under a variety of hypotheses. Notably, we explored the dark photon parameter space, leading to competitive limits compared to direct dark photon search experiments, particularly for dark photon masses below 4\,MeV and considering the invisible decay mode. Furthermore, by comparing our results with a previous BDM search conducted by the Super-Kamionkande experiment, we found that the COSINE-100 detector has advantages in searching for low-mass dark matter. This analysis demonstrates the potential of the COSINE-100 detector to search for MeV electron recoil signals produced by the dark sector particle interactions., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present results of a search for bosonic super-weakly interacting massive particles (BSW) as keV scale dark matter candidates that is based on an exposure of 97.7 kg$\cdot$year from the COSINE experiment. In this search, we employ, for the first time, Compton-like as well as absorption processes for pseudoscalar and vector BSWs. No evidence for BSWs is found in the mass range from 10 $\mathrm{keV/c}^2$ to 1 $\mathrm{MeV/c}^2$, and we present the exclusion limits on the dimensionless coupling constants to electrons $g_{ae}$ for pseudoscalar and $\kappa$ for vector BSWs at 90% confidence level. Our results show that these limits are improved by including the Compton-like process in masses of BSW, above $\mathcal{O}(100\,\mathrm{keV/c}^2)$.

Abstract

We present results from a search for solar bosonic dark matter using the annual modulation method with the COSINE-100 experiment. The results were interpreted considering three dark sector bosons models: solar dark photon; DFSZ and KSVZ solar axion; and Kaluza-Klein solar axion. No modulation signal that is compatible with the expected from the models was found from a data-set of 2.82 yr, using 61.3 kg of NaI(Tl) crystals. Therefore, we set a 90$\%$ confidence level upper limits for each of the three models studied. For the solar dark photon model, the most stringent mixing parameter upper limit is $1.61 \times 10^{-14}$ for dark photons with a mass of 215 eV. For the DFSZ and KSVZ solar axion, and the Kaluza-Klein axion models, the upper limits exclude axion-electron couplings, $g_{ae}$, above $1.61 \times 10^{-11}$ for axion mass below 0.2 keV; and axion-photon couplings, $g_{a\gamma\gamma}$, above $1.83 \times 10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$ for an axion number density of $4.07 \times 10^{13}$ cm$^{-3}$. This is the first experimental search for solar dark photons and DFSZ and KSVZ solar axions using the annual modulation method. The lower background, higher light yield and reduced threshold of NaI(Tl) crystals of the future COSINE-200 experiment are expected to enhance the sensitivity of the analysis shown in this paper. 23. Unfolding Algebraic Thinking from a Cognitive Perspective

Abstract

Little is known about the cognitive effort associated with algebraic activity in the elementary and middle school grades. However, this investigation is significant for sensitizing teachers and researchers to the mental demands of algebra learning. In this paper, we focus on the relationship between algebraic thinking and domain-general cognitive abilities. The sample of the study comprised 591 students from grades 4 to 7. The students' abilities in algebraic thinking were assessed through a test that involved three task categories: generalized arithmetic, functional thinking, and modelling languages. Test batteries were used to assess students' domain-general cognitive abilities in terms of analogical, serial, spatial, and deductive reasoning. The results of structural equation modelling analysis indicated that: (1) analogical reasoning predicts students' abilities only in generalized arithmetic; (2) serial reasoning predicts students' abilities only in generalized arithmetic; (3) spatial reasoning predicts students' abilities in functional thinking and modelling languages; and (4) deductive reasoning predicts students' abilities in all three categories. Differences between students across grades are also discussed.

Acupuncture involves stimulating points with lower electrical impedance (EI). Understanding EI changes with needle and exercise stimuli can elucidate acupuncture mechanisms. This study included 60 subjects, divided into control (C) and acupuncture (A) groups. EI was assessed at four points: 0 (before procedures), I (after handgrip protocol [HGP]), II (after 20 minutes of rest), and III (after 20 minutes of rest in C or stimulation in A, followed by HGP in both groups). Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. In the A group, EI was significantly reduced at HT3, shown by increased % microampere when comparing assessments I, II, and III with assessment 0 (p < 0.005). Intergroup comparisons revealed a reduced % microampere when comparing assessments II (p < 0.02) and III (p < 0.0001). Furthermore, the stimulation of an acupoint over a motor nerve branch changes the EI.

Abstract

Abstract Zinc is an essential trace element required in the diet of all species. While the effects of zinc have been studied in growing calves, little is known about the effect of zinc on the microbiota of the gestating cow or her neonatal calf. Understanding factors that shape the gut health of neonatal animals and evaluating the effect of dietary supplements in adult gestating animals is important in promoting animal health and informing feeding practices. The aims of this study were to determine the effect of dietary zinc on the microbiota and resistome of the gestating cow and calf. Gestating cows received standard (40 ppm) or high (205 ppm) dietary zinc levels from dry off to calving. Fecal samples were collected from cows upon enrollment and at calving and from neonatal calves. Fecal samples underwent 16S rRNA sequencing and a subset also underwent shotgun metagenomic sequencing. The effect of zinc supplementation on the diversity and composition of the cow and calf microbiome and resistome was assessed. Alpha and beta diversity and composition of the microbiota were significantly altered over time but not by treatment in the cows, with alpha diversity decreasing and 14 genera found at significantly higher relative abundances at calving compared to enrollment. Levels of 27 antimicrobial resistance genes significantly increased over time. Only a small number of taxa were differentially expressed at calving in treatment and control groups, including Faecalibacterium, Bacteroides, Turicibacter, and Bifidobacterium pseudolongum. No effect of the dam’s treatment group was observed on the diversity or composition of the neonatal calf microbiota. The calf resistome, which was relatively rich and diverse compared to the cow, was also unaffected by the dam’s treatment group. The impact of high levels of dietary zinc thus appeared to be minimal, with no observed changes in alpha or beta diversity, and few changes in the relative abundance of a small number of taxa and antimicrobial resistance genes.

Importance: Understanding acupuncture point microenvironments is vital for optimizing treatment efficacy. Evaluating changes in water content at these points can provide further insights into the effects of acupuncture on tissues.Objective: This study aimed to measure tissue dielectric constant (TDC) and assess changes in water content, specifically at stomach 36 (ST36, Zusanli) and spleen 6 (SP6, Sanyinjiao) acupuncture points.Methods : : In a controlled, blinded, randomized trial, 113 healthy volunteers were divided into six groups based on TDC sensor diameters (XS, M, and L): three control groups and three acupuncture groups. They were assessed at three time points: T1, baseline; T2, 20 min post-needle withdrawal; and T3, 40 min post-needle withdrawal. Electrical impedance (EI) was also analyzed. Significance level was set at p < 0.001.Results : : TDC at ST36 and SP6 significantly decreased with the XS probe at T2 and T3 compared with that at T1 (F8, 452: 54.61). TDC did not significantly vary between T2 and T3 with M and L probes. EI data indicated that the current passage increased in the SP (F2, 226: 39.32) and ST (F2, 226: 37.32) groups during T2 and T3 compared with that during T1 within their respective groups and controls.Conclusion : s and Relevance: This study demonstrated the efficacy of TDC measurements in detecting water content fluctuations at acupuncture points and their responses to needles. TDC measurements, which were validated against EI, provide valuable insights into acupuncture point microenvironments and thus help optimize treatments.

Objective: To analyze and compare the impact of social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic on sleep assessed at two time points (visit 1: during strict social isolation; visit 2: after the relaxation of social isolation measures) in individuals with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and interstitial lung disease (ILD), all of whom were not infected with COVID-19. Method: In a one-year prospective cohort study, individuals were evaluated concerning lung function (via spirometry), demographic and clinical data, and sleep objectively assessed through actigraphy over 7 consecutive days at both visits. Result: A total of 36 individuals (12 with COPD, 10 with asthma and 14 with ILD) were included. There was significant decline in sleep quality at visit 2 compared to visit 1 across all three diseases, primarily in the parameters of sleep efficiency, fragmentation and wake time after sleep onset; however, the total sleep duration did not change. Furthermore, individuals with ILD exhibited a smaller variation in both the number and duration of vigilance blocks compared to those with the other two diseases, indicating lower sleep fragmentation. Conclusion: Regardless of the disease (COPD, asthma, or ILD), individuals with chronic respiratory conditions who were not infected with COVID-19 experienced decline of sleep quality following the period of social isolation. Additionally, individuals with ILD appear to have been less impacted (with lower sleep fragmentation) compared to those with the other diseases.

Abstract

Introdução: A nitrofurantoína é frequentemente utilizada para profilaxia de infecções urinárias. Nesses casos, o uso contínuo e prolongado da droga expõe o paciente a variados efeitos adversos. Entre os mais comuns, destacam-se náuseas, êmeses, cefaleia e diarreia. Contudo, manifestações mais raras, tais quais fibrose pulmonar e lesão hepática induzida por drogas (DILI - do inglês, drug induced liver injury), são descritas na literatura. Há poucos relatos na literatura da associação concomitante de fibrose pulmonar e hepatite autoimune devido ao uso de nitrofurantoína. Objetivo: Relatar caso de fibrose pulmonar concomitante a DILI autoimune-like induzidas por uso de nitrofurantoína. Método: Relato de caso. Resultados: C.P.C., 62 anos, feminina, portadora de asma, hipotireoidismo e infecção urinária de repetição, em uso de nitrofurantoína profilática há 4 anos. Procurou atendimento devido a dispneia com piora progressiva nos últimos 30 dias, associada a astenia, fadiga e tosse não produtiva. Tomografia de tórax evidenciou alterações fibroatelectásicas e bronquiectasias difusas bilateralmente, com predomínio perihilar, associadas a extensas opacidades consolidativas em vidro fosco. Apresentava dao hepático com elevação de transaminase oxalacética 878 (VR 40) e transaminase pirúvica 2006 (VR 35). Realizadas sorologias, excluídas causas infecciosas. Solicitadas provas reumatológicas, com fator antinuclear (FAN) reagente, título 1/160, padrão nuclear pontilhado quasi-homogêneo (fenótipo autoimune-like). Evoluiu com melhora clínica e laboratorial após suspensão da Macrodantina e uso de corticoterapia sistêmica com metilprednisolona. Posteriormente, confirmada hipótese de doença intersticial pulmonar fibrosante por nitrofurantoína através do anatomopatológico. Conclusão: O presente trabalho relata um caso raro de ocorrência concomitante de dois efeitos adversos raros associados à nitrofurantoína, antimicrobiano amplamente utilizado na prática médica. O reconhecimento precoce de tais eventos é essencial para um correto manejo e, consequentemente, melhor prognóstico.

Introdução: A dengue é uma doença viral transmitida por artrópodes, cuja gravidade depende de inúmeros fatores, entre eles fatores relacionados ao hospedeiro. Infecções bacterianas durante o curso da dengue podem ocorrer, mas ainda não tem seu mecanismo totalmente elucidado. Bacteremias durante quadro de dengue são raras e associadas a mau prognóstico. Até o momento não há na literatura bacteremia por S aureus e N gonorrhoeae de paciente infectado por dengue. Objetivo: Relatar caso de vasculite séptica por S aureus e N gonorrhoeae em paciente infectado por dengue. Método: Relato de caso e revisão da literatura. Resultados: Paciente masculino 28 anos, previamente hígido, com múltiplas parceiras sexuais, com febre alta de início súbito, artralgia, cefaleia e mialgia, associado a lesões necróticas por todo corpo há 2 dias. Procurou atendimento no 3° dia de sintomas, com NS1 reagente. Como manteve febre e aumento das lesões por todo corpo após 15 dias, retorna para atendimento necessitando de internação. No exame físico apresentava lesões púrpuras e algumas necróticas, algumas com aspecto hemorrágico por todo corpo. Apresentava leucocitose 15 mil, PCR 7,20 mg/dL e VHS 102 mm, creatinina 1,30 mg/dL, ureia 30 mg/dL. Iniciado empiricamente ceftriaxone e teicoplanina. Realizou ecocardiograma transtorácico e transesofágico, tomografia de tórax e abdome normais. Dengue IgM reagente e sorologia para HIV não reagente. Hemoculturas com crescimento de Neisseria gonorrhoeae e S aureus (em 2 amostras) confirmado por método automatizado, provas manuais e MALDI-TOF. Anatomopatológico da pele com achados tardios de vasculite séptica em resolução. Paciente com resolução do quadro com uso de ceftriaxone por 14 dias e normalização das provas inflamatórias, e segue em investigação ambulatorial para imunodeficiências primárias. Conclusão: Relatamos caso de doença estafilocócica e gonocócica disseminada em paciente com dengue. Há relatos na literatura de doença gonocócica disseminada, principalmente associadas a deficiência de complemento, mas até o momento não há relatos de caso de bacteremia por S aureus e N gonorrhoeae simultaneamente em paciente com dengue. Ainda não está claro como a dengue pode predispor à superinfecção e à bacteremia. Diferentes mecanismos hipotéticos são a imunidade enfraquecida induzida, a grave neutropenia e a translocação bacteriana observada durante a doença no curso da doença.

Abstract

Introdução: A varicela é uma doença viral contagiosa causada pelo vírus varicela zoster (VVZ), pertencente à família Herpesviridae e comumente se apresenta como uma manifestação cutânea autolimitada. Embora na maioria dos casos a doença segue um curso leve sem complicações, alguns pacientes podem desenvolver complicações extremamente raras, como o tromboembolismo pulmonar (TEP). Há poucos relatos na literatura de varicela associadas a fenômenos trombóticos, como o TEP. Os fatores causais ainda são pouco compreendidos. Objetivo: Relatar caso embolia pulmonar aguda após infecção por varicela. Método: Relato de caso. Resultados: M.F., 38 anos, masculino, tabagista, previamente hígido. Procurou atendimento devido à erupção cutânea papulovesicular pruriginosa, com polimorfismo regional, disseminada em todo corpo com 3 dias de evolução. Apresentava contato recente e prolongado com familiar internada por Herpes-Zóster. Paciente não soube informar varicela na infância e negava vacinação prévia. Procurou atendimento novamente após 11 dias com dor torácica ventilatório dependente e dispneia. Angiotomografia positiva para TEP. Sorologias para HIV, sífilis e hepatites B e C não reagentes. IgM e IgG para varicela reagentes. Realizados aciclovir e anticoagulação plena, evoluiu com resolução dos quadros. Conclusão: Relatos de complicações trombóticas devido ao VVZ não são comuns na literatura médica. Eles incluem principalmente casos de trombose no sistema nervoso central e sua minoria de embolia pulmonar. Apresentamos um interessante caso de infecção por VVZ complicada em paciente adulto imunocompetente, associada à embolia pulmonar após contato com familiar com Herpes-Zóster para chamar atenção que infecções auto limitadas podem levar a fenômenos trombóticos graves.

Abstract

Introdução: Endoftalmite é uma infecção grave dos tecidos e/ou fluidos intraoculares. Majoritariamente, associa-se a mecanismos exógenos, como traumas, cirurgias ou inoculação direta. Vias endógenas são infrequentes. A Escherichia coli, um bacilo gram-negativo, raramente pode causar endoftalmite através de disseminação hematogênica. Objetivo: Relatar caso de paciente com endoftalmite por E coli. Método: Relato de caso. Resultados: J.C.L., feminino, 67 anos, portadora de diabetes mellitus e retinopatia diabética, sem cirurgias oculares prévias. Procurou atendimento por astenia, náuseas, calafrios e piora da acuidade visual. Na admissão apresentava hemograma com 19 mil leucócitos, PCR 41 mg/dL, creatinina 5,18 mg/dL, ureia 194 mg/dL, além do parcial de urina com 750.000 leucócitos e líquor normal. Iniciado ceftriaxone empírico por diagnóstico de pielonefrite. Paciente evoluiu pior com dor retro orbitária, cefaleia e anopsia 24 horas, necessitando de evisceração por endoftalmite no 7o dia de internação. Hemoculturas, urocultura e cultura de tecido positivas para E. coli multissensível. Apresentou piora da função renal com necessidade de diálise, além de quadro de trombose venosa profunda em membro inferior esquerdo. Complicou com pneumonia e necessidade de ampliar antibiótico para meropenem, completando 28 dias de esquema no total, com negativação das hemoculturas e resolução do quadro de insuficiência renal dialítica. Recebeu alta para acompanhamento ambulatorial e anticoagulação via oral. Conclusão: O presente caso destaca a importância da identificação precoce dos sinais e sintomas dessa infecção ocular para que o diagnóstico e tratamento possam ser prontamente iniciados. Existem poucos dados na literatura da prevalência de endoftalmite por E coli, e são escassos os relatos de casos evidenciando esse tipo de infecção. O diagnóstico requer um índice de suspeição elevado quando observado envolvimento ocular em um paciente com bacteremia, sendo que a intervenção precoce, possivelmente, produz melhores resultados.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Objectives: to map the nursing theories developed in stricto sensu graduate programs in nursing in Brazil. Methods: a bibliometric study, carried out on the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel Theses and Dissertations Portal in October 2023. The controlled descriptors “Nursing Theory” and “Nursing Models” and the uncontrolled descriptors “Theories” and “Middle-Range Theory” were used. Selected studies were cataloged for analysis, which was conducted by the study authors, who have a doctoral degree and expertise in research on nursing theories. Results: thirty-nine nursing theories were mapped, with a predominance of middle-range theories (79.5%), focusing on nursing diagnostic concepts and use of the theoretical-methodology strategy of theoretical-causal validity. Conclusions: the study identified nursing theories developed in Brazil, recognizing trends, development strategies, theorized objects of disciplinary interest and investments necessary for practical application in Brazilian contexts.

Abstract

The DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has reported the observation of an annual modulation in the event rate that has been attributed to dark matter interactions over the last two decades. However, even though tremendous efforts to detect similar dark matter interactions were pursued, no definitive evidence has been observed to corroborate the DAMA/LIBRA signal. Many studies assuming various dark matter models have attempted to reconcile DAMA/LIBRA's modulation signals and null results from other experiments, however no clear conclusion can be drawn. Apart from the dark matter hypothesis, several studies have examined the possibility that the modulation is induced by variations in their detector's environment or their specific analysis methods. In particular, a recent study presents a possible cause of the annual modulation from an analysis method adopted by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment in which the observed annual modulation could be reproduced by a slowly varying time-dependent background. Here, we study the COSINE-100 data using an analysis method similar to the one adopted by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment and observe a significant annual modulation, although the modulation phase is almost opposite to that of the DAMA/LIBRA data. Assuming the same background composition for COSINE-100 and DAMA/LIBRA, simulated experiments for the DAMA/LIBRA without dark matter signals also provide significant annual modulation with an amplitude similar to DAMA/LIBRA with opposite phase. Even though this observation does not explain the DAMA/LIBRA's results directly, this interesting phenomenon motivates deeper studies of the time-dependent DAMA/LIBRA background data.

Abstract

During the last decades, the coastal areas of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, have been subjected to intense economic and industrial growth. As a result, it may be expected that the overall environmental status of Saudi Arabian coastal marine waters has been affected by human activities. As a consequence, adequate management of the Saudi Arabian coastal zone requires an assessment of how the various pressures within this zone impact the quality of seawater and sediments. To this end, environmental surveys were conducted over 15 hotspot areas (areas subject to environmental pressures) in the Saudi Arabian coastal zone of the Red Sea and over three hotspot areas in the Saudi Arabian waters of the Arabian Gulf. The survey in the Red Sea, conducted in June/July 2021, acquired measurements from hotspot areas spanning most of the Saudi coastline, extending from near the Saudi–Jordanian border in the north to Al Shuqaiq and Jizan Economic City (close to the Saudi–Yemen border) in the south. The survey in the Arabian Gulf, carried out in September 2021, included the areas of Al Khobar, Dammam and Ras Al Khair. The main objective of both cruises was to record the physical and biogeochemical parameters along the coastal waters of the kingdom, tracing the dispersion of contaminants related to specific pressures. Taken together, these cruises constitute the first multidisciplinary and geographically comprehensive study of contaminants within the Saudi Arabian coastal waters and sediments. The measurements acquired revealed the influence of various anthropogenic pressures on the coastal marine environment of Saudi Arabia and also highlighted a strong influence of hydrographic conditions on the distribution of biochemical properties in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf.
