Abstract

The theory of Leonard triples is applied to the derivation of normalized scalar products of on-shell and off-shell Bethe states generated from a Leonard pair. The scalar products take the form of linear combinations of $q$-Racah polynomials with coefficients depending on the off-shell parameters. Upon specializations, explicit solutions for the corresponding Belliard-Slavnov linear systems are obtained. It implies the existence of a determinant formula in terms of inhomogeneous Bethe roots for the $q$-Racah polynomials. Also, a set of relations that determines solutions (Bethe roots) of the corresponding Bethe equations of inhomogeneous type in terms of solutions of Bethe equations of homogenous type is obtained., Comment: 26pp

2. Aerodynamic Influence Over Leading and Pursuing Motorcycles Equipped With Downforce-Generation Wings

Abstract

The aerodynamic influence of a wing-equipped motorcycle on a pursuing motorcycle presents critical implications for stability and performance. This study investigates the induced flow dynamics, characterized by a turbulent and complex wake that significantly affects the aerodynamic forces and moments experienced by the following motorcycle. The presence of aerodynamic appendices on the leading motorcycle intensifies these effects, generating coherent wingtip vortices that propagate downstream-a typical behavior of lift-generating devices. In this work, numerical simulations reveal that the aerodynamic consequences vary with the relative positioning of the pursuing motorcycle. A lateral offset can reduce wheelie tendencies due to beneficial flow interactions, while lateral alignment and longitudinal positioning variation may exacerbate negative aerodynamic impacts, compromising stability. Contrary to initial expectations, the simulations in this work demonstrate that the turbulent wake and the coherent vortex pair influence the pursuing motorcycle's behavior independently, persisting across all tested relative distances. While the turbulent wake usually creates a low-pressure region that facilitates drafting, the presence of coherent vortices reduces this advantage by introducing additional lift through the upwash velocity component. Conversely, specific lateral deviations can lessen wheelie effects, with downwash becoming the dominant flow component. Although difficult to be removed promptly due to being part of the overall high performance motorcycle design, it is suggested that the downforce generating aerodynamic appendices removal should be considered by the motorcycling competition governing bodies to provide better safety and racing conditions at all categories that make use of it.

Abstract

This research presents an online path planner for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that can handle dynamic obstacles and UAV motion constraints, including maximum curvature and desired orientations. Our proposed planner uses a NURBS path representation and a Differential Evolution algorithm, incorporating concepts from the Velocity Obstacle approach in a constraint function. Abstract

It is well-known that the standard bulk-boundary correspondence does not hold for non-Hermitian systems in which also new phenomena such as exceptional points do occur. Here we study by analytical and numerical means a paradigmatic one-dimensional non-Hermitian model with dimerization, asymmetric hopping, and imaginary staggered potentials. We present analytical solutions for the eigenspectrum of this model with both open and closed boundary conditions as well as for the singular-value spectrum. We explicitly demonstrate the proper bulk-boundary correspondence between topological winding numbers in the periodic case and singular values in the open case. We also show that a non-trivial topology leads to protected eigenvalues in the entanglement spectrum. In the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric case, we find that the model has a phase where exceptional points become dense in the thermodynamic limit., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

When we want to simulate the realization of a symmetric simple random walk on $\mathbb Z^d$, we use $(2d)$-side fair dice to decide to which neighbor it jumps at each step if $d\geq 2$ or we simply use a fair coin when $d=1$. Assume that instead of using a dice or a coin we want to do a simulation using a well shuffled deck with $K$ cards of each of the $2d$ suits. In the first step the probability of jumping to each neighbor is $(2d)^{-1}$, but from the second step it becomes biased. Of course if we continue performing this simulation, the total variation distance between its law and the law of the random walk will increase until all cards are used. In this paper we investigate the minimum number of cards $N=2d K$ that a deck must contain so that the total variation distance between the law of a $n$-step simulation and the law of a $n$-step realization of the random walk is smaller than a chosen threshold $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$. More generally, we prove that when $N=cn$ this distance converges, as $n \to \infty$, to a Gaussian profile which depends on $c\geq 2d$. Furthermore, our analysis shows that this Gaussian profile vanishes as $c \to \infty$, proving the convergence of a multivariate hypergeometric distribution to a multinomial distribution in total variation., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

Gamma/hadron discrimination in ground-based gamma-ray observatories at the GeV energy range is challenging as traditional muon-based methods become less effective at lower energies. This work explores a novel gamma/hadron discrimination method for Extensive Air Shower arrays that analyzes the shower signal footprint patterns using advanced Vision Transformer (ViT) models. In this work, we establish a Trotter-Kato type theorem. More precisely, we characterize the convergence in distribution of Feller processes by examining the convergence of their generators. The main novelty lies in providing quantitative estimates in the vague topology at any fixed time. Abstract

Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above $0.6\,$EeV., Comment: Minor typo in table 4 corrected

Abstract

Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive instrument to detect photons with energies above $10^{17}$ eV. It measures extensive air showers generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid technique that exploits the combination of a fluorescence detector with a ground array of particle detectors. The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth of the shower maximum ($X_{max}$) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced cascades. In this work, a new analysis technique in the energy interval between 1 and 30 EeV (1 EeV = $10^{18}$ eV) has been developed by combining the fluorescence detector-based measurement of $X_{max}$ with the specific features of the surface detector signal through a parameter related to the air shower muon content, derived from the universality of the air shower development. No evidence of a statistically significant signal due to photon primaries was found using data collected in about 12 years of operation. Thus, upper bounds to the integral photon flux have been set using a detailed calculation of the detector exposure, in combination with a data-driven background estimation. The derived 95% confidence level upper limits are 0.0403, 0.01113, 0.0035, 0.0023, and 0.0021 km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ above 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 EeV, respectively, leading to the most stringent upper limits on the photon flux in the EeV range. Compared with past results, the upper limits were improved by about 40% for the lowest energy threshold and by a factor 3 above 3 EeV, where no candidates were found and the expected background is negligible. The presented limits can be used to probe the assumptions on chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and allow for the constraint of the mass and lifetime phase space of super-heavy dark matter particles., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

We report an investigation of the mass composition of cosmic rays with energies from 3 to 100 EeV (1 EeV=$10^{18}$ eV) using the distributions of the depth of shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$. The analysis relies on ${\sim}50,000$ events recorded by the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory and a deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithm. Above energies of 5 EeV, the data set offers a 10-fold increase in statistics with respect to fluorescence measurements at the Observatory. After cross-calibration using the Fluorescence Detector, this enables the first measurement of the evolution of the mean and the standard deviation of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to 100 EeV. Our findings are threefold: (1.) The evolution of the mean logarithmic mass towards a heavier composition with increasing energy can be confirmed and is extended to 100 EeV. (2.) The evolution of the fluctuations of $X_\mathrm{max}$ towards a heavier and purer composition with increasing energy can be confirmed with high statistics. We report a rather heavy composition and small fluctuations in $X_\mathrm{max}$ at the highest energies. (3.) We find indications for a characteristic structure beyond a constant change in the mean logarithmic mass, featuring three breaks that are observed in proximity to the ankle, instep, and suppression features in the energy spectrum., Comment: Version accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

We present measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$, inferred for the first time on an event-by-event level using the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using deep learning, we were able to extend measurements of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to energies of 100 EeV ($10^{20}$ eV), not yet revealed by current measurements, providing new insights into the mass composition of cosmic rays at extreme energies. Gaining a 10-fold increase in statistics compared to the Fluorescence Detector data, we find evidence that the rate of change of the average $X_\mathrm{max}$ with the logarithm of energy features three breaks at $6.5\pm0.6~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, $11\pm 2~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, and $31\pm5~(\mathrm{stat})\pm3~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, in the vicinity to the three prominent features (ankle, instep, suppression) of the cosmic-ray flux. The energy evolution of the mean and standard deviation of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions indicates that the mass composition becomes increasingly heavier and purer, thus being incompatible with a large fraction of light nuclei between 50 EeV and 100 EeV., Comment: Version accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

Cosmic string networks are the best motivated relics of cosmological phase transitions, being unavoidable in many physically plausible extensions of the Standard Model. Most studies, including those providing constraints from and forecasts of their observational signals, rely on assumptions of featureless networks, neglecting the additional degrees of freedom on the string worldsheet, e.g. charges and currents, which are all but unavoidable in physically realistic models. An extension of the canonical velocity-dependent one-scale model, accounting for all such possible degrees of freedom, has been recently developed. Here we improve its physical interpretation by studying and classifying its possible asymptotic scaling solutions, and in particular how they are affected by the expansion of the Universe and the available energy loss or transfer mechanisms. We find three classes of solutions. For sufficiently fast expansion rates the charges and currents decay and one asymptotes to the Nambu-Goto case, while for slower expansion rates they can dominate the network dynamics. In between the two there is a third regime in which the network, including its charge and current, reaches full scaling. Under specific but plausible assumptions, this intermediate regime corresponds to the matter-dominated era. Abstract

Cosmic string networks are expected to form in early Universe phase transitions via the Kibble mechanism and are unavoidable in several Beyond the Standard Model theories. While most predictions of observational signals of string networks assume featureless Abelian-Higgs or Nambu-Goto string networks, in many such extensions the networks can carry additional degrees of freedom, including charges and currents; these are often generically known as superconducting strings. All such degrees of freedom can impact the evolution of the networks and therefore their observational signatures. We report on the results of $2048^3$ field theory simulations of the evolution of a current-carrying network of strings, highlighting the different scaling behaviours of the network in the radiation and matter eras. We also report the first numerical measurements of the coherence length scales for the charge and current and of the condensate equation of state, and show that the latter mainly depends on the expansion rate, with chirality occurring for the matter era. AbstractIntroduction Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) have been widely used for bone defect´s filling given their excellent biocompatibility, osteoconduction ability and ease of manipulation [1]. Nevertheless, their mechanical properties and handling performance still need to be improved to satisfy clinical requirements. Indeed, enhancing their injectability can widen its application to minimally invasive surgical procedures [2]. This work aims to investigate the effect of the liquid phase amount and presence of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) on the basic properties of a commercial CPC containing a polymeric adjuvant, chitosan (Chi).Materials and methods Starting from the original formulation containing Chi, samples with different amounts of liquid phase (LP 30%, 38%, 42%, 50%) were prepared. Additionally, for LP 38% and 42% formulations, Chi was replaced by HPMC polymer. Setting times were measured using the Vicat apparatus. After 6 days of setting, mechanical properties were studied through compression assays and Vickers hardness was measured. Injectability experiments were done and the cytotoxicity of the commercial CPC was assessed using MG63 and NIH/3T3 cell lines following the ISO 10993-5 guidelines.Results As shown in Table 1, increasing the LP content from 30% to 50% increased the initial setting time from 6.5 min to 24 min, and the final setting time from 7.5 min to 32 min. Concerning the resistance to compression, it was lowered from 9.53 ± 1.00 MPa to 0.83 ± 0.20 MPa. Regarding materials’ hardness, it decreased by 77%. Injectability measurements showed that only 38% and 42%LP formulations could be injected. Nonetheless, while 38%LP formulation presented an injectability of 31 ± 2%, 42%LP formulation showed an injectability of 91 ± 1%. As for the addition of HPMC, for 38%LP formulation an initial setting time of 6.5 min and a final setting time of 10.5 min were measured, and for 42%LP formulation 12 min and 14.5 min, respectively. The mechanical properties presented similar values regardless the added polymer. Moreover, the formulations containing HPMC presented 69 ± 6% injectability for 38%LP and 94 ± 1% for 42%LP. Finally, when in contact with extracts of the commercial CPC for 24 h, the studied cell lines presented viability greater than 75% when compared to unexposed cells. Discussion and conclusions: Our study shows that LP content has a significant impact on the CPC studied properties. Effectively, for 38 and 42%LP the setting times, resistance to compression and hardness of the materials assume suitable values for their use as trabecular bone defect fillers. For the Chi CPC, 42%LP formulation is ∼200% more injectable than the 38%LP one. Even though the replacement of Chi by HPMC does not affect the mechanical properties significantly, HPMC itself seems to promote injectability, increasing it by 126%. Abstract

Background: Advances in high throughput sequencing technologies provide a huge number of genomes to be analyzed. Thus, computational methods play a crucial role in analyzing and extracting knowledge from the data generated. Investigating genomic mutations is critical because of their impact on chromosomal evolution, genetic disorders, and diseases. It is common to adopt aligning sequences for analyzing genomic variations. However, this approach can be computationally expensive and restrictive in scenarios with large datasets. Results: We present a novel method for identifying single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DNA sequences from assembled genomes. This study proposes GRAMEP, an alignment-free approach that adopts the principle of maximum entropy to discover the most informative k-mers specific to a genome or set of sequences under investigation. The informative k-mers enable the detection of variant-specific mutations in comparison to a reference genome or other set of sequences. In addition, our method offers the possibility of classifying novel sequences with no need for organism-specific information. GRAMEP demonstrated high accuracy in both in silico simulations and analyses of viral genomes, including Dengue, HIV, and SARS-CoV-2. Our approach maintained accurate SARS-CoV-2 variant identification while demonstrating a lower computational cost compared to methods with the same purpose. Conclusions: GRAMEP is an open and user-friendly software based on maximum entropy that provides an efficient alignment-free approach to identifying and classifying unique genomic subsequences and SNPs with high accuracy, offering advantages over comparative methods. Abstract

The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. An additional cosmic-ray population with higher source density and softer spectra, presumably also extragalactic and dominating the cosmic-ray flux at EeV energies, is also required to reproduce the overall spectrum and composition results for all energies down to 0.6~EeV., Comment: Matches published version

Inheritance of the presence/absence of seeds in Annona squamosa is mediated by a single fully recessive gene and is caused by a deletion of the INNER NO OUTER (INO) locus. For some fruits, seedless varieties are desirable for consumption and processing. In the sugar apple tree (Annona squamosa L.), the seedless trait in the Thai seedless (Ts) and Brazilian seedless (Bs) accessions was associated with defective ovules and an apparent deletion of the INNER NO OUTER (INO) ovule development gene locus. Segregation analysis of F2 and backcross descendants of crosses of Bs to fertile wild-type varieties in this species with a multi-year generation time showed that seedlessness was recessive and controlled by a single locus. Comparison of whole genome sequence of a wild-type plant and a third accession, Hawaiian seedless (Hs), identified a 16 kilobase deletion including INO in this line. Ts and Bs lines were shown to have an identical deletion, indicating a common origin from a single deletion event. Analysis of microsatellite markers could not preclude the possibility that all three seedless accessions are vegetatively propagated clones. The sequence of the deletion site enabled a codominant assay for the wild-type and mutant genes allowing observation of complete cosegregation of the seedless/defective ovule phenotype with the INO deletion, showing maximal separation of less than 3.5 cM. The observed deletion is the only significant difference between the wild-type and Hs line over 587 kilobases, likely encompassing much more than 3.5 cM, showing that the deletion is the cause of seedless trait. The codominant markers and obtained progenies will be useful for introgression of the seedless trait into elite sugar apple lines and into other Annonas through interspecific crossings.
