We define and study "row polymorphism" for a type system with set-theoretic types, specifically union, intersection, and negation types. We consider record types that embed row variables and define a subtyping relation by interpreting types into sets of record values and by defining subtyping as the containment of interpretations. We define a functional calculus equipped with operations for field extension, selection, and deletion, its operational semantics, and a type system that we prove to be sound. We provide algorithms for deciding the typing and subtyping relations. This research is motivated by the current trend of defining static type system for dynamic languages and, in our case, by an ongoing effort of endowing the Elixir programming language with a gradual type system.

Identifying patients who benefit from a treatment is a key aspect of personalized medicine, which allows the development of individualized treatment rules (ITRs). Many machine learning methods have been proposed to create such rules. However, to what extent the methods lead to similar ITRs, i.e., recommending the same treatment for the same individuals is unclear. In this work, we compared 22 of the most common approaches in two randomized control trials. Two classes of methods can be distinguished. The first class of methods relies on predicting individualized treatment effects from which an ITR is derived by recommending the treatment evaluated to the individuals with a predicted benefit. In the second class, methods directly estimate the ITR without estimating individualized treatment effects. For each trial, the performance of ITRs was assessed by various metrics, and the pairwise agreement between all ITRs was also calculated. Results showed that the ITRs obtained via the different methods generally had considerable disagreements regarding the patients to be treated. A better concordance was found among akin methods. Overall, when evaluating the performance of ITRs in a validation sample, all methods produced ITRs with limited performance, suggesting a high potential for optimism. For non-parametric methods, this optimism was likely due to overfitting. The different methods do not lead to similar ITRs and are therefore not interchangeable. We define and study a term calculus implementing higher-order node replication. It is used to specify two different (weak) evaluation strategies: call-by-name and fully lazy call-by-need, that are shown to be observationally equivalent by using type theoretical technical tools.

A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range $\sim$8 km to $\sim$190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 {\mu}bar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18$\pm$0.03 {\mu}bar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 {\mu}bar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. We introduce a call-by-name lambda-calculus $\lambda Jn$ with generalized applications which is equipped with distant reduction. This allows to unblock $\beta$-redexes without resorting to the standard permutative conversions of generalized applications used in the original $\Lambda J$-calculus with generalized applications of Joachimski and Matthes. We show strong normalization of simply-typed terms, and we then fully characterize strong normalization by means of a quantitative (i.e. non-idempotent intersection) typing system. This characterization uses a non-trivial inductive definition of strong normalization --related to others in the literature--, which is based on a weak-head normalizing strategy. We also show that our calculus $\lambda Jn$ relates to explicit substitution calculi by means of a faithful translation, in the sense that it preserves strong normalization. Moreover, our calculus $\lambda Jn$ and the original $\Lambda J$-calculus determine equivalent notions of strong normalization. As a consequence, $\lambda J$ inherits a faithful translation into explicit substitutions, and its strong normalization can also be characterized by the quantitative typing system designed for $\lambda Jn$, despite the fact that quantitative subject reduction fails for permutative conversions.

GRANDMA is an international project that coordinates telescope observations of transient sources with large localization uncertainties. Such sources include gravitational wave events, gamma-ray bursts and neutrino events. GRANDMA currently coordinates 25 telescopes (70 scientists), with the aim of optimizing the imaging strategy to maximize the probability of identifying an optical counterpart of a transient source. We present the Global Rapid Advanced Network Devoted to the Multi-messenger Addicts (GRANDMA). The network consists of 21 telescopes with both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. They are connected together thanks to a dedicated infrastructure. The network aims at coordinating the observations of large sky position estimates of transient events to enhance their follow-up and reduce the delay between the initial detection and the optical confirmation. The GRANDMA program mainly focuses on follow-up of gravitational-wave alerts to find and characterise the electromagnetic counterpart during the third observational campaign of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. But it allows for any follow-up of transient alerts involving neutrinos or gamma-ray bursts, even with poor spatial localisation. We present the different facilities, tools, and methods we developed for this network, and show its efficiency using observations of LIGO/Virgo S190425z, a binary neutron star merger candidate. We furthermore report on all GRANDMA follow-up observations performed during the first six months of the LIGO-Virgo observational campaign, and we derive constraints on the kilonova properties assuming that the events' locations were imaged by our telescopes., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

We present results from three world-wide campaigns that resulted in the detections of two single-chord and one multi-chord stellar occultations by the Plutino object (84922) 2003~VS$_2$. From the single-chord occultations in 2013 and 2014 we obtained accurate astrometric positions for the object, while from the multi-chord occultation on November 7th, 2014, we obtained the parameters of the best-fitting ellipse to the limb of the body at the time of occultation. We also obtained short-term photometry data for the body in order to derive its rotational phase during the occultation. The rotational light curve present a peak-to-peak amplitude of 0.141 $\pm$ 0.009 mag. This allows us to reconstruct the three-dimensional shape of the body, with principal semi-axes $a = 313.8 \pm 7.1$ km, $b = 265.5^{+8.8}_{-9.8}$ km, and $c = 247.3^{+26.6}_{-43.6}$ km, which is not consistent with a Jacobi triaxial equilibrium figure. The derived spherical volume equivalent diameter of $548.3 ^{+29.5}_{-44.6}$ km is about 5\% larger than the radiometric diameter of 2003~VS$_2$ derived from Herschel data of $523 \pm 35$ km, but still compatible with it within error bars. From those results we can also derive the geometric albedo ($0.123 ^{+0.015}_{-0.014}$) and, under the assumption that the object is a Maclaurin spheroid, the density $\rho = 1400^{+1000}_{-300}$ for the plutino. The disappearances and reappearances of the star during the occultations do not show any compelling evidence for a global atmosphere considering a pressure upper limit of about 1 microbar for a pure nitrogen atmosphere, nor secondary features (e.g. rings or satellite) around the main body., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, 1 appendix

We demonstrate a method for measuring atom-surface interactions using transmission spectroscopy of thermal vapors confined in a wedged nano-cell. The wedged shape of the cell allows complementary measurements of both the bulk atomic vapor and atoms close to surfaces experiencing strong van der Waals atom-surface interaction. These are used to tightly constrain the dipole-dipole collisional parameters of a theoretical model for transmission spectra that accounts for atom-surface interactions, cavity effects, collisions with the surface of the cell and atomic motion. We illustrate this method on a cesium vapor in a sapphire cell, find $C_3=1.3\pm0.1$\,kHz.$\mu$m$^3$ and demonstrate that even the weakest of the van der Waals atom-surface interaction coefficients - for ground-state alkali atom transitions - can be determined with a very good precision. With huge data acquisition progresses realized in the past decades and acquisition systems now able to produce high resolution grids and point clouds, the digitization of physical terrains becomes increasingly more precise. Such extreme quantities of generated and modeled data greatly impact computational performances on many levels of high-performance computing (HPC): storage media, memory requirements, transfer capability, and finally simulation interactivity, necessary to exploit this instance of big data. Efficient representations and storage are thus becoming "enabling technologies'' in HPC experimental and simulation science. We propose HexaShrink, an original decomposition scheme for structured hexahedral volume meshes. The latter are used for instance in biomedical engineering, materials science, or geosciences. HexaShrink provides a comprehensive framework allowing efficient mesh visualization and storage. Its exactly reversible multiresolution decomposition yields a hierarchy of meshes of increasing levels of details, in terms of either geometry, continuous or categorical properties of cells. Starting with an overview of volume meshes compression techniques, our contribution blends coherently different multiresolution wavelet schemes in different dimensions. It results in a global framework preserving discontinuities (faults) across scales, implemented as a fully reversible upscaling at different resolutions. Experimental results are provided on meshes of varying size and complexity. They emphasize the consistency of the proposed representation, in terms of visualization, attribute downsampling and distribution at different resolutions. Finally, HexaShrink yields gains in storage space when combined to lossless compression techniques.

We report on the fabrication of an all-glass vapor cell with a thickness varying linearly between (exactly) 0 and ~ 1 {\mu}m. The cell is made in Borofloat glass that allows super polish roughness, a full optical bonding assembling and easy filling with alkali vapors. We detail the challenging manufacture steps and present experimental spectra resulting from off-axis fluorescence and transmission spectroscopy of the Cesium D1 line. We consider the identity component of the Sato-Tate group of the Jacobian of curves of the form $$C_1\colon y^2=x^{2g+2}+c, C_2\colon y^2=x^{2g+1}+cx, C_3\colon y^2=x^{2g+1} +c,$$ where $g$ is the genus of the curve and $c\in\mathbb Q^*$ is constant. We approach this problem in three ways. First we use a theorem of Kani-Rosen to determine the splitting of Jacobians for $C_1$ curves of genus 4 and 5 and prove what the identity component of the Sato-Tate group is in each case. We then determine the splitting of Jacobians of higher genus $C_1$ curves by finding maps to lower genus curves and then computing pullbacks of differential 1-forms. In using this method, we are able to relate the Jacobians of curves of the form $C_1$, $C_2$, and $C_3$. Finally, we develop a new method for computing the identity component of the Sato-Tate groups of the Jacobians of the three families of curves. We use this method to compute many explicit examples, and find surprising patterns in the shapes of the identity components for these families of curves., Comment: Final version

By measuring the transmission of near-resonant light through an atomic vapor confined in a nano-cell we demonstrate a mesoscopic optical response arising from the non-locality induced by the motion of atoms with a phase coherence length larger than the cell thickness. Whereas conventional dispersion theory -- where the local atomic response is simply convolved by the Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution -- is unable to reproduce the measured spectra, a model including a non-local, size-dependent susceptibility is found to be in excellent agreement with the measurements. This result improves our understanding of light-matter interaction in the mesoscopic regime and has implications for applications where mesoscopic effects may degrade or enhance the performance of miniaturized atomic sensors., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; Supplemental material : 9 pages, 4 figures

In recent years a variant of the resonance method was developed which allowed to obtain improved $\Omega$-results for the Riemann zeta function along vertical lines in the critical strip. In the present paper we show how this method can be adapted to prove the existence of large values of $|L(\sigma, \chi)|$ in the range $\sigma \in (1/2,1]$, and to estimate the proportion of characters for which $|L(\sigma, \chi)|$ is of such a large order. More precisely, for every fixed $\sigma \in (1/2,1)$ we show that for all sufficiently large $q$ there is a non-principal character $\chi$ (mod $q$) such that $\log |L(\sigma,\chi)| \geq C(\sigma) (\log q)^{1-\sigma} (\log \log q)^{-\sigma}$. In the case $\sigma=1$ we show that there is a non-principal character $\chi$ (mod $q$) for which $|L(1,\chi)| \geq e^\gamma \left(\log_2 q + \log_3 q - C \right)$. In both cases, our results essentially match the prediction for the actual order of such extreme values, based on probabilistic models., Comment: 15 pages. We measure the near-resonant transmission of light through a dense medium of potassium vapor confined in a cell with nanometer thickness in order to investigate the origin and validity of the collective Lamb-shift. A complete model including the multiple reflections in the nano-cell accurately reproduces the observed strong asymmetry of the line shape and allows extraction of a density dependent shift of the atomic resonance. We observe an additional, unexpected dependence of this shift with the thickness of the medium. This extra dependence demands further experimental and theoretical investigations.
