1. AT1 fourth-order isogeometric phase-field modeling of brittle fracture

Abstract: A crucial aspect in phase-field modeling, based on the variational formulation of brittle fracture, is the accurate representation of how the fracture surface energy is dissipated during the fracture process in the energy competition within a minimization problem. In general, the family of AT1 functionals showcases a well-defined elastic limit and narrow transition regions before crack onset, as opposed to AT2 models. On the other hand, high-order functionals provide similar accuracy as low-order ones but allow for larger mesh sizes in their discretization, remarkably reducing the computational cost. In this work, we aim to combine both these advantages and propose a novel AT1 fourth-order phase-field model for brittle fracture within an isogeometric framework, which provides a straightforward discretization of the high-order term in the crack surface density functional. For the introduced AT1 functional, we first prove a {\Gamma}-convergence result (in both the continuum and discretized isogeometric setting) based on a careful study of the optimal transition profile, which ultimately provides the explicit correction factor for the toughness and the exact size of the transition region. Fracture irreversibility is modeled by monotonicity of the damage variable and is conveniently enforced using the Projected Successive Over-Relaxation algorithm. 2. Interacting galaxies in the IllustrisTNG simulations -- VIII: Pericentric star formation rate enhancements are driven both by increased fuelling and efficiency

Abstract: Using the TNG100-1 cosmological simulations, we explore how galaxy properties, such as specific star formation rate ($\rm sSFR=SFR/M_*$), gas fraction ($\rm f_{gas} \,= \, M_{\rm H}/M_{*}$), and star formation efficiency ($\rm SFE_{H} = SFR/M_{H}$), change over the course of galaxy-galaxy interactions. We identify 18,534 distinct encounters from the reconstructed orbits of a sample of massive galaxies ($\rm M_{*} > 10^{10} \; \rm M_{\odot}$) with companions within a stellar mass ratio of 0.1 to 10. Using these encounters, we study the variation of galaxy properties over time as they approach and move away from pericentric encounters over a redshift range of $0 \leq z < 1$. Following the closest pericentric encounters ($\leq 50$ kpc) of a host galaxy with its companion, we find that sSFR is enhanced by a factor of $1.6 \pm 0.1$ on average within the central stellar half-mass radius (R\textsubscript{1/2}) compared to pre-encounter values. Our results show a time delay between pericentre and maximum sSFR enhancement of $\sim$0.1 Gyr with a mean galaxy separation of 75 kpc. We similarly find that $\rm f_{gas}$ is enhanced by a factor of $1.2 \pm 0.1$, and $\rm SFE_{H}$ is enhanced by a factor of $1.4 \pm 0.1$ following the pericentre of an encounter within the same timescale. Additionally, we find evidence of inflowing gas towards the centre, measured by comparing the $\rm f_{gas}$ and metallicity within the central R\textsubscript{1/2} to the galactic outskirts. We find that approximately 70 per cent of the peak sSFR enhancement can be attributed to the increase in $\rm SFE_{H}$, with the increase in $\rm f_{gas}$ contributing the remaining 30 per cent., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures. Abstract: This Letter reports the precise measurement of reactor antineutrino spectrum and flux based on the full data set of 4.7 million inverse-beta-decay (IBD) candidates collected at Daya Bay near detectors. Expressed in terms of the IBD yield per fission, the antineutrino spectra from all reactor fissile isotopes and the specific $\mathrm{^{235}U}$ and $\mathrm{^{239}Pu}$ isotopes are measured with 1.3$\%$, 3$\%$ and 8$\%$ uncertainties respectively near the 3 MeV spectrum peak in reconstructed energy, reaching the best precision in the world. The total antineutrino flux and isotopic $\mathrm{^{235}U}$ and $\mathrm{^{239}Pu}$ fluxes are precisely measured to be $5.84\pm0.07$, $6.16\pm0.12$ and $4.16\pm0.21$ in units of $10^{-43} \mathrm{cm^2/fission}$. These measurements are compared with the Huber-Mueller (HM) model, the reevaluated conversion model based on the Kurchatov Institute (KI) measurement and the latest Summation Model (SM2023). The Daya Bay flux shows good consistency with KI and SM2023 models, but disagrees with HM model. The Daya Bay spectrum, however, disagrees with all model predictions.

Abstract: We report on a search for millicharged particles (mCPs) produced in cosmic ray proton atmospheric interactions using data collected during the first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment. The mCPs produced by two processes -- meson decay and proton bremsstrahlung -- are considered in this study. This search utilized a novel signature unique to liquid xenon (LXe) time projection chambers (TPCs), allowing sensitivity to mCPs with masses ranging from 10 to 1000 MeV/c$^2$ and fractional charges between 0.001 and 0.02 of the electron charge e. With an exposure of 60 live days and a 5.5 tonne fiducial mass, we observed no significant excess over background. This represents the first experimental search for atmospheric mCPs and the first search for mCPs using an underground LXe experiment.

5. The Online Submodular Assignment Problem

Abstract: Online resource allocation is a rich and varied field. One of the most well-known problems in this area is online bipartite matching, introduced in 1990 by Karp, Vazirani, and Vazirani [KVV90]. Since then, many variants have been studied, including AdWords, the generalized assignment problem (GAP), and online submodular welfare maximization. In this paper, we introduce a generalization of GAP which we call the submodular assignment problem (SAP). This generalization captures many online assignment problems, including all classical online bipartite matching problems as well as broader online combinatorial optimization problems such as online arboricity, flow scheduling, and laminar restricted allocations. We present a fractional algorithm for online SAP that is (1-1/e)-competitive. Additionally, we study several integral special cases of the problem. In particular, we provide a (1-1/e-epsilon)-competitive integral algorithm under a small-bids assumption, and a (1-1/e)-competitive integral algorithm for online submodular welfare maximization where the utility functions are given by rank functions of matroids. The key new ingredient for our results is the construction and structural analysis of a "water level" vector for polymatroids, which allows us to generalize the classic water-filling paradigm used in online matching problems. 6. Galaxy evolution in the post-merger regime. III -- The triggering of active galactic nuclei peaks immediately after coalescence

Abstract: Galaxy mergers have been shown to trigger AGN in the nearby universe, but the timescale over which this process happens remains unconstrained. The Multi-Model Merger Identifier (MUMMI) machine vision pipeline has been demonstrated to provide reliable predictions of time post-merger (T_PM) for galaxies selected from the Ultraviolet Near Infrared and Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS) up to T_PM=1.76 Gyr after coalescence. By combining the post-mergers identified in UNIONS with pre-coalescence galaxy pairs, we can study the triggering of AGN throughout the merger sequence. AGN are identified using a range of complementary metrics: mid-IR colours, narrow emission lines and broad emission lines, which can be combined to provide insight into the demographics of dust and luminosity of the AGN population. Our main results are: 1) Regardless of the metric used, we find that the peak AGN excess (compared with a matched control sample) occurs immediately after coalescence, at 0 < T_PM < 0.16 Gyr. 2) The excess of AGN is observed until long after coalescence; both the mid-IR selected AGN and broad line AGN are more common than in the control sample even in the longest time bin of our sample (0.96 < T_PM < 1.76 Gyr). 3) The AGN excess is larger for more luminous and bolometrically dominant AGN, and we find that AGN in post-mergers are generally more luminous than secularly triggered events. 4) A deficit of broad line AGN in the pre-merger phase, that evolves into an excess in post-mergers is consistent with evolution of the covering fraction of nuclear obscuring material. Before coalescence, tidally triggered inflows increase the covering fraction of nuclear dust; in the post-merger regime feedback from the AGN clears (at least some of) this material. 5) The statistical peak in the triggering of starbursts occurs contemporaneously with AGN, within 0.16 Gyr of coalescence., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Open Journal of Astrophysics

7. Justice-Oriented Assessment in Immigrant Serving Schools: A Critical Ethnographic Case Study of the Elements of Performance Assessment

Abstract: This critical ethnographic case study explores the impact of Performance-Based Assessment Tasks (PBATs) on high school dynamics and instructional practices, particularly in schools serving immigrant communities. PBATs, considered alternatives to standardized testing, have shown promise in enhancing student engagement, critical thinking, and college readiness. Drawing on interviews and fieldwork at four International High Schools, the study investigates how PBAT adoption influences day-to-day operations, teacher-student interactions, and school culture. Results reveal that PBAT implementation requires early investment in skill development and mentorship, transforming educators into facilitators and students into active learners. Moreover, the oral presentation aspect fosters multilingual proficiency. Despite challenges, PBATs offer a pathway to equitable assessment practices and educational transformation. Framed within a justice-oriented framework, this research highlights the potential of PBATs to create inclusive and empowering learning environments for immigrant and marginalized students.

Abstract: The clinical presentation and epidemiology of infective endocarditis (IE) have evolved over time. While the cornerstones of IE treatment remain antimicrobial therapy and surgery, percutaneous mechanical aspiration (PMA) has emerged as an option for carefully selected patients as a complementary modality, based on retrospective data, case series, and expert experience. In this comprehensive review, we summarize the proceedings from an inaugural summit dedicated to the discussion of PMA in the global management of IE, consisting of experts across multiple disciplines from diverse geographic regions and care environments. After conceptualizing the 3 major roles of PMA as a bridge to decision, destination therapy, and adjunctive therapy, we then review the clinical scenarios in which PMA might be considered by IE subtype. We discuss patient selection, the rationale for intervention, and the most recent evidence for each. Next, we consider PMA for IE in the larger context of our health care system across 3 domains: clinical collaboration, financial considerations, and academic innovation, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary teams and cross-organizational partnerships, reimbursement models, and the need for high-quality research. Finally, we outline what we determined to be the most pressing outstanding questions in this space. In doing so, we propose a national consortium to help organize efforts to move this field forward and share our progress in these endeavors to date. PMA for IE has great promise, but significant work remains if we are to fully realize its potential to safely and effectively improve outcomes for modern endocarditis patients.

9. Super-Size Me: The Big Multi-AGN Catalog (The Big MAC), Data Release 1: The Source Catalog

Abstract: Galaxy mergers represent the most transformative and dramatic avenue for galaxy and supermassive black hole (SMBH) evolution. Multi-active galactic nuclei (multi-AGNs) are expected to ignite, grow, and evolve alongside the host galaxies, and these represent different evolutionary stages of the SMBHs over the merger sequence. However, no comprehensive census exists of observed multi-AGN systems. Here we present The Big Multi-AGN Catalog (The Big MAC), the first literature-complete catalog of all known (confirmed and candidate) multi-AGN systems, which includes dual AGNs (separations $\sim0.03-110$ kpc), binary AGNs (gravitationally bound, $\lesssim30$ pc), recoiling AGNs, and N-tuple AGNs (involving three or more AGNs), gleaned from hundreds of literature articles spanning the years 1970-2020. The Big MAC is the first archive to assemble all multi-AGN systems and candidates across all selection methods, redshifts, and galaxy mass ratios, and this catalog offers a solid foundation for archival and targeted multiwavelength follow-up investigations. In this work, we provide an overview of the creation of the multi-AGN literature library and the catalog itself, present definitions for different multi-AGN classes (including new definitions for dual AGNs derived from galaxy pairs in Illustris-TNG100), describe the general properties of the catalog as a function of redshift space and separation, and we provide a thorough examination of selection and confirmation method usage within the literature. We also discuss best practices for the multi-AGN literature, and we emphasize that a diverse, multiwavelength array of selection approaches is crucial for a complete understanding of multi-AGNs and - by extension - answering long-standing, open questions regarding the importance of AGNs and galaxy mergers., Comment: Under review for ApJS. 67 pages, including: 24 figures, 11 tables, 10 pages of references. Abstract: The XLZD collaboration is developing a two-phase xenon time projection chamber with an active mass of 60 to 80 t capable of probing the remaining WIMP-nucleon interaction parameter space down to the so-called neutrino fog. In this work we show that, based on the performance of currently operating detectors using the same technology and a realistic reduction of radioactivity in detector materials, such an experiment will also be able to competitively search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{136}$Xe using a natural-abundance xenon target. XLZD can reach a 3$\sigma$ discovery potential half-life of 5.7$\times$10$^{27}$ yr (and a 90% CL exclusion of 1.3$\times$10$^{28}$ yr) with 10 years of data taking, corresponding to a Majorana mass range of 7.3-31.3 meV (4.8-20.5 meV). XLZD will thus exclude the inverted neutrino mass ordering parameter space and will start to probe the normal ordering region for most of the nuclear matrix elements commonly considered by the community., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: This report describes the experimental strategy and technologies for a next-generation xenon observatory sensitive to dark matter and neutrino physics. The detector will have an active liquid xenon target mass of 60-80 tonnes and is proposed by the XENON-LUX-ZEPLIN-DARWIN (XLZD) collaboration. The design is based on the mature liquid xenon time projection chamber technology of the current-generation experiments, LZ and XENONnT. A baseline design and opportunities for further optimization of the individual detector components are discussed. The experiment envisaged here has the capability to explore parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter down to the neutrino fog, with a 3$\sigma$ evidence potential for the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections as low as $3\times10^{-49}\rm cm^2$ (at 40 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP mass). The observatory is also projected to have a 3$\sigma$ observation potential of neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe at a half-life of up to $5.7\times 10^{27}$ years. Abstract: We report results of a search for nuclear recoils induced by weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter using the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) two-phase xenon time projection chamber. This analysis uses a total exposure of $4.2\pm0.1$ tonne-years from 280 live days of LZ operation, of which $3.3\pm0.1$ tonne-years and 220 live days are new. A technique to actively tag background electronic recoils from $^{214}$Pb $\beta$ decays is featured for the first time. Enhanced electron-ion recombination is observed in two-neutrino double electron capture decays of $^{124}$Xe, representing a noteworthy new background. After removal of artificial signal-like events injected into the data set to mitigate analyzer bias, we find no evidence for an excess over expected backgrounds. World-leading constraints are placed on spin-independent (SI) and spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections for masses $\geq$9 GeV/$c^2$. The strongest SI exclusion set is $2.1\times10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ at the 90% confidence level at a mass of 36 GeV/$c^2$, and the best SI median sensitivity achieved is $5.0\times10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ for a mass of 40 GeV/$c^2$., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. 13. Galaxy evolution in the post-merger regime. II -- Post-merger quenching peaks within 500 Myr of coalescence

Abstract: (Abridged) Mechanisms for quenching star formation in galaxies remain hotly debated, with galaxy mergers an oft-proposed pathway. In Ellison et al. (2022) we tested this scenario by quantifying the fraction of recently and rapidly quenched post-starbursts (PSBs) in a sample of post-merger galaxies identified in the Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS). With our recent development of the Multi-Model Merger Identifier (MUMMI) neural network ensemble (Ferreira et al. 2024a,b), we are now additionally able to predict the time since coalescence (T_PM) for the UNIONS post-merger galaxies up to T_PM = 1.8 Gyr, allowing us to further dissect the merger sequence and measure more precisely when quenching occurs. Based on a sample of 5927 z<0.3 post-mergers identified in UNIONS, we find that the post-coalescence population evolves from one dominated by star-forming (and starbursting) galaxies at 0 < T_PM < 0.16 Gyr, through to a population that is dominated by quenched galaxies by T_PM ~ 1.5 Gyr. We find a PSB excess throughout the post-merger regime, but with a clear peak at 0.16 < T_PM < 0.48 Gyr. In this post-merger time range PSBs are more common than in control galaxies by factors of 30-100, an excess that drops sharply at longer times since merger. We also quantify the fraction of PSBs that are mergers and find that the majority (75%) of classically selected E+A are identified as mergers, with a lower merger fraction (60%) amongst PCA selected PSBs. Our results demonstrate that 1) galaxy-galaxy interactions can lead to rapid post-merger quenching within 0.5 Gyr of coalescence, 2) the majority of (but not all) PSBs at low z are linked to mergers and 3) quenching pathways are diverse, with different PSB selection techniques likely identifying galaxies quenched by different physical processes with an additional dependence on stellar mass., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Open Journal of Astrophysics. 15 pages, 11 figures. Abstract: Galaxy mergers can enhance star formation rates throughout the merger sequence, with this effect peaking around the time of coalescence. However, owing to a lack of information about their time of coalescence, post-mergers could only previously be studied as a single, time-averaged population. We use timescale predictions of post-coalescence galaxies in the UNIONS survey, based on the Multi-Model Merger Identifier deep learning framework (\textsc{Mummi}) that predicts the time elapsed since the last merging event. For the first time, we capture a complete timeline of star formation enhancements due to galaxy mergers by combining these post-merger predictions with data from pre-coalescence galaxy pairs in SDSS. Using a sample of $564$ galaxies with $M_* \geq 10^{10} M_\odot$ at $0.005 < z < 0.3$ we demonstrate that: 1) galaxy mergers enhance star formation by, on average, up to a factor of two; 2) this enhancement peaks within 500 Myr of coalescence; 3) enhancements continue for up to 1~Gyr after coalescence; and 4) merger-induced star formation significantly contributes to galaxy mass assembly, with galaxies increasing their final stellar masses by, $10\%$ to $20\%$ per merging event, producing on average $\log(M_*/M_\odot) = {9.56_{-0.19}^{+0.13}}$ more mass than non-interacting star-forming galaxies solely due to the excess star formation., Comment: Letter Submitted to MNRAS, 6 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: Recent discovery of orbital currents in several material platforms including light element metals has opened new possibilities for exploring novel transport phenomena and applications to spin-orbitronic devices. These orbital currents, similar to spin currents, have the ability to generate torque on adjacent magnetic layers, opening a new avenue for efficient spintronic devices. However, separating spin and orbital currents has been one of the major challenges. Here, we show evidence for large conventional as well as unconventional spin and orbital currents in IrO$_2$ and disentangle them by crystal symmetry. We study the anisotropic spin and orbital Hall effects in IrO$_2$ (001), (100), and (111) orientations and find unconventional z-polarized orbital torques using angular spin torque ferromagnetic resonance of IrO$_2$/Ni heterostructures, which are in agreement regarding the relative signs with theoretical calculations of spin and orbital Hall conductivity. This work provides a promising route towards highly efficient low power spintronic and orbitronic devices in oxide heterostructures.

Abstract: In the third APOKASC catalog, we present data for the complete sample of 15,808 evolved stars with APOGEE spectroscopic parameters and Kepler asteroseismology. We used ten independent asteroseismic analysis techniques and anchor our system on fundamental radii derived from Gaia $L$ and spectroscopic $T_{\rm eff}$. We provide evolutionary state, asteroseismic surface gravity, mass, radius, age, and the spectroscopic and asteroseismic measurements used to derive them for 12,418 stars. This includes 10,036 exceptionally precise measurements, with median fractional uncertainties in \nmax, \dnu, mass, radius and age of 0.6\%, 0.6\%, 3.8\%, 1.8\%, and 11.1\% respectively. We provide more limited data for 1,624 additional stars which either have lower quality data or are outside of our primary calibration domain. Using lower red giant branch (RGB) stars, we find a median age for the chemical thick disk of $9.14 \pm 0.05 ({\rm ran}) \pm 0.9 ({\rm sys})$ Gyr with an age dispersion of 1.1 Gyr, consistent with our error model. We calibrate our red clump (RC) mass loss to derive an age consistent with the lower RGB and provide asymptotic GB and RGB ages for luminous stars. We also find a sharp upper age boundary in the chemical thin disk. We find that scaling relations are precise and accurate on the lower RGB and RC, but they become more model dependent for more luminous giants and break down at the tip of the RGB. 17. Revisiting the Definition of Dyslexia

Abstract: The International Dyslexia Association definition of dyslexia was updated 20 years ago and has been referenced frequently in research and practice. In this paper, researchers from the Florida Center for Reading Research consider the components of the definition and make recommendations for revisions. These include recognizing the persistence of word-reading, decoding, and spelling difficulties, acknowledging the multifactorial causal basis of dyslexia, clarifying exclusionary factors, and denoting comorbidity with other developmental disorders. It is also suggested that the academic and psychosocial consequences of dyslexia be highlighted to reinforce a preventive service delivery model. Lastly, the inclusion of dyslexia within a specific learning disability category is supported.

Abstract: PurposeWe aimed to estimate health state utility values (HSUVs) for the key health states found in opioid use disorder (OUD) cost-effectiveness models in the published literature.MethodsData obtained from six trials representing 1,777 individuals with OUD. We implemented mapping algorithms to harmonize data from different measures of quality of life (the SF-12 Versions 1 and 2 and the EQ-5D-3 L). We performed a regression analysis to quantify the relationship between HSUVs and the following variables: days of extra-medical opioid use in the past 30 days, injecting behaviors, treatment with medications for OUD, HIV status, and age. A secondary analysis explored the impact of opioid withdrawal symptoms.ResultsThere were statistically significant reductions in HSUVs associated with extra-medical opioid use (-0.002 (95% CI [-0.003,-0.0001]) to -0.003 (95% CI [-0.005,-0.002]) per additional day of heroin or other opiate use, respectively), drug injecting compared to not injecting (-0.043 (95% CI [-0.079,-0.006])), HIV-positive diagnosis compared to no diagnosis (-0.074 (95% CI [-0.143,-0.005])), and age (-0.001 per year (95% CI [-0.003,-0.0002])). Parameters associated with medications for OUD treatment were not statistically significant after controlling for extra-medical opioid use (0.0131 (95% CI [-0.0479,0.0769])), in line with prior studies. The secondary analysis revealed that withdrawal symptoms are a fundamental driver of HSUVs, with predictions of 0.817 (95% CI [0.768, 0.858]), 0.705 (95% CI [0.607, 0.786]), and 0.367 (95% CI [0.180, 0.575]) for moderate, severe, and worst level of symptoms, respectively.ConclusionWe observed HSUVs for OUD that were higher than those from previous studies that had been conducted without input from people living with the condition.

Abstract: The broad physics reach of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment covers rare phenomena beyond the direct detection of dark matter. We report precise measurements of the extremely rare decay of $^{124}$Xe through the process of two-neutrino double electron capture (2$\nu$2EC), utilizing a $1.39\,\mathrm{kg} \times \mathrm{yr}$ isotopic exposure from the first LZ science run. A half-life of $T_{1/2}^{2\nu2\mathrm{EC}} = (1.09 \pm 0.14_{\text{stat}} \pm 0.05_{\text{sys}}) \times 10^{22}\,\mathrm{yr}$ is observed with a statistical significance of $8.3\,\sigma$, in agreement with literature. 21. Examinees' Rapid-Guessing Patterns in Computerized Adaptive Testing for Interim Assessment: From Hierarchical Clustering

Abstract: Interim assessment is frequently administered via computerized adaptive testing (CAT), offering direct support to teaching and learning. This study attempted to fill a vital knowledge gap about the nuanced landscape of examinees' rapid-guessing patterns in CAT in the interim assessment context. We analyzed a sample of 146,519 examinees in Grades 1-8 who participated in a widely used CAT, using hierarchical clustering, a robust data science methodology for uncovering insights in data. We found that examinees' rapid-guessing patterns varied across item positions, content domains, chronological grades, examinee clusters, and examinees' overall rapid-guessing level on the test, suggesting a nuanced interplay between testing features and examinees' behavior. 22. Experimental tests of the full spin torque conductivity tensor in epitaxial IrO2 thin films

Abstract: Unconventional spin-orbit torques arising from electric-field-generated spin currents in anisotropic materials have promising potential for spintronic applications, including for perpendicular magnetic switching in high-density memory applications. Here we determine all the independent elements of the spin torque conductivity tensor allowed by bulk crystal symmetries for the tetragonal conductor IrO2, via measurements of conventional (in plane) antidamping torques for IrO2 thin films in the high-symmetry (001) and (100) orientations. We then test that rotational transformations of this same tensor can predict both the conventional and unconventional anti-damping torques for IrO2 thin films in the lower-symmetry (101), (110), and (111) orientations, finding good agreement. The results confirm that spin-orbit torques from all these orientations are consistent with the bulk symmetries of IrO2, and show how simple measurements of conventional torques from high-symmetry orientations of anisotropic thin films can provide an accurate prediction of the unconventional torques from lower-symmetry orientations., Comment: Main text: 14 pages, 3 figures. 24. Galaxy Mergers in UNIONS -- I: A Simulation-driven Hybrid Deep Learning Ensemble for Pure Galaxy Merger Classification

Abstract: Merging and interactions can radically transform galaxies. However, identifying these events based solely on structure is challenging as the status of observed mergers is not easily accessible. Fortunately, cosmological simulations are now able to produce more realistic galaxy morphologies, allowing us to directly trace galaxy transformation throughout the merger sequence. To advance the potential of observational analysis closer to what is possible in simulations, we introduce a supervised deep learning Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Vision Transformer (ViT) hybrid framework, Mummi (MUlti Model Merger Identifier). Mummi is trained on realism-added synthetic data from IllustrisTNG100-1, and is comprised of a multi-step ensemble of models to identify mergers and non-mergers, and to subsequently classify the mergers as interacting pairs or post-mergers. To train this ensemble of models, we generate a large imaging dataset of 6.4 million images targeting UNIONS with RealSimCFIS. We show that Mummi offers a significant improvement over many previous machine learning classifiers, achieving 95% pure classifications even at Gyr long timescales when using a jury-based decision making process, mitigating class imbalance issues that arise when identifying real galaxy mergers from $z=0$ to $0.3$. Additionally, we can divide the identified mergers into pairs and post-mergers at 96% success rate. We drastically decrease the false positive rate in galaxy merger samples by 75%. By applying Mummi to the UNIONS DR5-SDSS DR7 overlap, we report a catalog of 13,448 high confidence galaxy merger candidates. Finally, we demonstrate that Mummi produces powerful representations solely using supervised learning, which can be used to bridge galaxy morphologies in simulations and observations., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures. 25. Improved Mechanisms and Prophet Inequalities for Graphical Dependencies

Abstract: Over the past two decades, significant strides have been made in stochastic problems such as revenue-optimal auction design and prophet inequalities, traditionally modeled with $n$ independent random variables to represent the values of $n$ items. However, in many applications, this assumption of independence often diverges from reality. Given the strong impossibility results associated with arbitrary correlations, recent research has pivoted towards exploring these problems under models of mild dependency. In this work, we study the optimal auction and prophet inequalities problems within the framework of the popular graphical model of Markov Random Fields (MRFs), a choice motivated by its ability to capture complex dependency structures. Specifically, for the problem of selling $n$ items to a single buyer to maximize revenue, we show that the max of SRev and BRev is an $O(\Delta)$-approximation to the optimal revenue for subadditive buyers, where $\Delta$ is the maximum weighted degree of the underlying MRF. This is a generalization as well as an exponential improvement on the $\exp(O(\Delta))$-approximation results of Cai and Oikonomou (EC 2021) for additive and unit-demand buyers. We also obtain a similar exponential improvement for the prophet inequality problem, which is asymptotically optimal as we show a matching upper bound.

Abstract: Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) may interact with a virtual pion that is exchanged between nucleons. This interaction channel is important to consider in models where the spin-independent isoscalar channel is suppressed. Using data from the first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter experiment, containing 60 live days of data in a 5.5~tonne fiducial mass of liquid xenon, we report the results on a search for WIMP-pion interactions. We observe no significant excess and set an upper limit of $1.5\times10^{-46}$~cm$^2$ at a 90\% confidence level for a WIMP mass of 33~GeV/c$^2$ for this interaction.

Abstract: This Letter reports the first measurement of the oscillation amplitude and frequency of reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay via neutron capture on hydrogen using 1958 days of data. With over 3.6 million signal candidates, an optimized candidate selection, improved treatment of backgrounds and efficiencies, refined energy calibration, and an energy response model for the capture-on-hydrogen sensitive region, the relative $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ rates and energy spectra variation among the near and far detectors gives $\mathrm{sin}^22\theta_{13} = 0.0759_{-0.0049}^{+0.0050}$ and $\Delta m^2_{32} = (2.72^{+0.14}_{-0.15})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ assuming the normal neutrino mass ordering, and $\Delta m^2_{32} = (-2.83^{+0.15}_{-0.14})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ for the inverted neutrino mass ordering. This estimate of $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}$ is consistent with and essentially independent from the one obtained using the capture-on-gadolinium sample at Daya Bay. The combination of these two results yields $\mathrm{sin}^22\theta_{13}= 0.0833\pm0.0022$, which represents an 8% relative improvement in precision regarding the Daya Bay full 3158-day capture-on-gadolinium result.

Abstract: The Data Acquisition System (DAQ) for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) dark matter detector is described. The signals from 745 PMTs, distributed across three subsystems, are sampled with 100-MHz 32-channel digitizers (DDC-32s). A basic waveform analysis is carried out on the on-board Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to extract information about the observed scintillation and electroluminescence signals. This information is used to determine if the digitized waveforms should be preserved for offline analysis. The system is designed around the Kintex-7 FPGA. In addition to digitizing the PMT signals and providing basic event selection in real time, the flexibility provided by the use of FPGAs allows us to monitor the performance of the detector and the DAQ in parallel to normal data acquisition. 38. A wearable anti-gravity supplement to therapy does not improve arm function in chronic stroke: a randomized trial

Abstract: Background: Gravity confounds arm movement ability in post-stroke hemiparesis. Reducing its influence allows effective practice leading to recovery. Yet, there is a scarcity of wearable devices suitable for personalized use across diverse therapeutic activities in the clinic. Objective: In this study, we investigated the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of anti-gravity therapy using the ExoNET device in post-stroke participants. Methods: Twenty chronic stroke survivors underwent six, 45-minute occupational therapy sessions while wearing the ExoNET, randomized into either the treatment (ExoNET tuned to gravity-support) or control group (ExoNET tuned to slack condition). Clinical outcomes were evaluated by a blinded-rater at baseline, post, and six-week follow-up sessions. Kinetic, kinematic, and patient experience outcomes were also assessed. Results: Mixed-effect models showed a significant improvement in Box and Blocks scores in the post-intervention session for the treatment group (effect size: 2.1, p = .04). No significant effects were found between the treatment and control groups for ARAT scores and other clinical metrics. Direct kinetic effects revealed a significant reduction in muscle activity during free exploration with an effect size of (-7.12%, p< 005). There were no significant longitudinal kinetic or kinematic trends. Subject feedback suggested a generally positive perception of the anti-gravity therapy. Conclusions: Anti-gravity therapy with the ExoNET is a safe and feasible treatment for post-stroke rehabilitation. The device provided anti-gravity forces, did not encumber range of motion, and clinical metrics of anti-gravity therapy demonstrated improvements in gross manual dexterity. Further research is required to explore potential benefits in broader clinical metrics.

39. Fast Approximate Determinants Using Rational Functions

Abstract: We show how rational function approximations to the logarithm, such as $\log z \approx (z^2 - 1)/(z^2 + 6z + 1)$, can be turned into fast algorithms for approximating the determinant of a very large matrix. We empirically demonstrate that when combined with a good preconditioner, the third order rational function approximation offers a very good trade-off between speed and accuracy when measured on matrices coming from Mat\'ern-$5/2$ and radial basis function Gaussian process kernels. In particular, it is significantly more accurate on those matrices than the state-of-the-art stochastic Lanczos quadrature method for approximating determinants while running at about the same speed., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures

Abstract: LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a tonne-scale experiment searching for direct dark matter interactions and other rare events. It is located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. The core of the LZ detector is a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC), designed with the primary goal of detecting Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via their induced low energy nuclear recoils. Surrounding the TPC, two veto detectors immersed in an ultra-pure water tank enable reducing background events to enhance the discovery potential. Intricate calibration systems are purposely designed to precisely understand the responses of these three detector volumes to various types of particle interactions and to demonstrate LZ's ability to discriminate between signals and backgrounds. In this paper, we present a comprehensive discussion of the key features, requirements, and performance of the LZ calibration systems, which play a crucial role in enabling LZ's WIMP-search and its broad science program. The thorough description of these calibration systems, with an emphasis on their novel aspects, is valuable for future calibration efforts in direct dark matter and other rare-event search experiments.

41. A global evidence map of human well-being and biodiversity co-benefits and trade-offs of natural climate solutions

Abstract: Natural climate solutions (NCS) are critical for mitigating climate change through ecosystem-based carbon removal and emissions reductions. NCS implementation can also generate biodiversity and human well-being co-benefits and trade-offs ("NCS co-impacts"), but the volume of evidence on NCS co-impacts has grown rapidly across disciplines, is poorly understood, and remains to be systematically collated and synthesized. A global evidence map of NCS co-impacts would overcome key barriers to NCS implementation by providing relevant information on co-benefits and trade-offs where carbon mitigation potential alone does not justify NCS projects. We employ large language models to assess over two million articles, finding 257,266 relevant articles on NCS co-impacts. We analyze this large and dispersed body of literature using innovative machine learning methods to extract relevant data (e.g., study location, species, and other key variables), and create a global evidence map on NCS co-impacts. Evidence on NCS co-impacts has grown approximately ten-fold in three decades, although some of the most abundant evidence is associated with pathways that have less mitigation potential. We find that studies often examine multiple NCS pathways, indicating natural NCS pathway complements, and each NCS is often associated with two or more coimpacts. Finally, NCS co-impacts evidence and priority areas for NCS are often mismatched--some countries with high mitigation potential from NCS have few published studies on the broader co-impacts of NCS implementation. Abstract: We present Aptly, an extension of the MIT App Inventor platform enabling mobile app development via natural language powered by code-generating large language models (LLMs). Aptly complements App Inventor's block language with a text language designed to allow visual code generation via text-based LLMs. We detail the technical aspects of how the Aptly server integrates LLMs with a realtime collaboration function to facilitate the automated creation and editing of mobile apps given user instructions. The paper concludes with insights from a study of a pilot implementation involving high school students, which examines Aptly's practicality and user experience. Abstract: The first science run of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, a dual-phase xenon time project chamber operating in the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, USA, has reported leading limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions and interactions described from a non-relativistic effective field theory (NREFT). Using the same 5.5~t fiducial mass and 60 live days of exposure we report on the results of a relativistic extension to the NREFT. We present constraints on couplings from covariant interactions arising from the coupling of vector, axial currents, and electric dipole moments of the nucleon to the magnetic and electric dipole moments of the WIMP which cannot be described by recasting previous results described by an NREFT. Using a profile-likelihood ratio analysis, in an energy region between 0~keV$_\text{nr}$ to 270~keV$_\text{nr}$, we report 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the coupling strength of five interactions in both the isoscalar and isovector bases., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: This Letter presents results of a search for the mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with three active neutrinos based on the full data sample of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, collected during 3158 days of detector operation, which contains $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ reactor \anue candidates identified as inverse beta-decay interactions followed by neutron-capture on gadolinium. The analysis benefits from a doubling of the statistics of our previous result and from improvements of several important systematic uncertainties. No significant oscillation due to mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with active neutrinos was found. Exclusion limits are set by both Feldman-Cousins and CLs methods. Light sterile neutrino mixing with $\sin^2 2\theta_{14} \gtrsim 0.01$ can be excluded at 95\% confidence level in the region of $0.01$ eV$^2 \lesssim |\Delta m^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1 $ eV$^2$. 45. SYNAPSE: SYmbolic Neural-Aided Preference Synthesis Engine

Abstract: This paper addresses the problem of preference learning, which aims to align robot behaviors through learning user specific preferences (e.g. "good pull-over location") from visual demonstrations. Despite its similarity to learning factual concepts (e.g. "red door"), preference learning is a fundamentally harder problem due to its subjective nature and the paucity of person-specific training data. We address this problem using a novel framework called SYNAPSE, which is a neuro-symbolic approach designed to efficiently learn preferential concepts from limited data. SYNAPSE represents preferences as neuro-symbolic programs, facilitating inspection of individual parts for alignment, in a domain-specific language (DSL) that operates over images and leverages a novel combination of visual parsing, large language models, and program synthesis to learn programs representing individual preferences. We perform extensive evaluations on various preferential concepts as well as user case studies demonstrating its ability to align well with dissimilar user preferences. Our method significantly outperforms baselines, especially when it comes to out of distribution generalization. We show the importance of the design choices in the framework through multiple ablation studies. Abstract: There is an emerging trend in applying deep learning methods to control complex nonlinear systems. This paper considers enhancing the runtime safety of nonlinear systems controlled by neural networks in the presence of disturbance and measurement noise. A robustly stable interval observer is designed to generate sound and precise lower and upper bounds for the neural network, nonlinear function, and system state. The obtained interval is utilised to monitor the real-time system safety and detect faults in the system outputs or actuators. 47. Scalable Spatiotemporal Prediction with Bayesian Neural Fields

Abstract: Spatiotemporal datasets, which consist of spatially-referenced time series, are ubiquitous in diverse applications, such as air pollution monitoring, disease tracking, and cloud-demand forecasting. As the scale of modern datasets increases, there is a growing need for statistical methods that are flexible enough to capture complex spatiotemporal dynamics and scalable enough to handle many observations. This article introduces the Bayesian Neural Field (BayesNF), a domain-general statistical model that infers rich spatiotemporal probability distributions for data-analysis tasks including forecasting, interpolation, and variography. BayesNF integrates a deep neural network architecture for high-capacity function estimation with hierarchical Bayesian inference for robust predictive uncertainty quantification. Evaluations against prominent baselines show that BayesNF delivers improvements on prediction problems from climate and public health data containing tens to hundreds of thousands of measurements. 48. Candida albicans inorganic phosphate transport and evolutionary adaptation to phosphate scarcity.

Abstract: Phosphorus is essential in all cells structural, metabolic and regulatory functions. For fungal cells that import inorganic phosphate (Pi) up a steep concentration gradient, surface Pi transporters are critical capacitators of growth. Fungi must deploy Pi transporters that enable optimal Pi uptake in pH and Pi concentration ranges prevalent in their environments. Single, triple and quadruple mutants were used to characterize the four Pi transporters we identified for the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans, which must adapt to alkaline conditions during invasion of the host bloodstream and deep organs. A high-affinity Pi transporter, Pho84, was most efficient across the widest pH range while another, Pho89, showed high-affinity characteristics only within one pH unit of neutral. Two low-affinity Pi transporters, Pho87 and Fgr2, were active only in acidic conditions. Only Pho84 among the Pi transporters was clearly required in previously identified Pi-related functions including Target of Rapamycin Complex 1 signaling, oxidative stress resistance and hyphal growth. We used in vitro evolution and whole genome sequencing as an unbiased forward genetic approach to probe adaptation to prolonged Pi scarcity of two quadruple mutant lineages lacking all 4 Pi transporters. Lineage-specific genomic changes corresponded to divergent success of the two lineages in fitness recovery during Pi limitation. Initial, large-scale genomic alterations like aneuploidies and loss of heterozygosity eventually resolved, as populations gained small-scale mutations. Severity of some phenotypes linked to Pi starvation, like cell wall stress hypersensitivity, decreased in parallel to evolving populations fitness recovery in Pi scarcity, while severity of others like membrane stress responses diverged from Pi scarcity fitness. Among preliminary candidate genes for contributors to fitness recovery, those with links to TORC1 were overrepresented. Since Pi homeostasis differs substantially between fungi and humans, adaptive processes to Pi deprivation may harbor small-molecule targets that impact fungal growth, stress resistance and virulence.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have shown that first-line (1L) maintenance therapy (MT) with poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors and/or bevacizumab improves outcomes among patients with advanced ovarian cancer (OC); however, these treatments are underutilized. This study aimed to provide a real-world understanding of MTs among patients with advanced OC who received 1L platinum-based chemotherapy (PBC). METHODS: A retrospective chart review using iKnowMed electronic health records to identify patients aged ≥18 years with advanced OC who initiated 1L PBC between January 1, 2018-December 31, 2020. Following 1L PBC, patients could have received MT or active surveillance (AS). Kaplan-Meier methods were used to estimate time to treatment discontinuation (TTD), real-world progression-free survival (rwPFS), and overall survival (OS). 50. African American Preschoolers' Performance on Norm-Referenced Language Assessments: Examining the Effect of Dialect Density and the Use of Scoring Modifications

Abstract: Purpose: We investigated and compared the outcomes from two standardized, norm-referenced screening assessments of language (i.e., Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals Preschool--Second Edition [CELFP-2], Diagnostic Evaluation of Language Variation--Screening Test [DELV-ST]) with African American preschoolers whose spoken dialect differed from that of General American English (GAE). We (a) described preschoolers' performance on the CELFP-2 Core Language Index (CLI) and its subtests with consideration of degree of dialect variation (DVAR) observed, (b) investigated how the application of dialect-sensitive scoring modifications to the expressive morphology and syntax Word Structure (WS) subtest affected CELFP-2 CLI scores, and (c) evaluated the screening classification agreement rates between the DELV-ST and the CELFP-2 CLI. Method: African American preschoolers (N = 284) completed the CELFP-2 CLI subtests (i.e., Sentence Structure, WS, Expressive Vocabulary) and the DELV-ST. Density of spoken dialect use was estimated with the DELV-ST Part I Language Variation Status, and percentage of DVAR was calculated. The CELFP-2 WS subtest was scored with and without dialect-sensitive scoring modifications. Results: Planned comparisons of CELFP-2 CLI performance indicated statistically significant differences in performance based on DELV-ST--determined degree of language variation groupings. Scoring modifications applied to the WS subtest increased subtest scaled scores and CLI composite standard scores. However, preschoolers who demonstrated strong variation from GAE continued to demonstrate significantly lower performance than preschoolers who demonstrated little to no language variation. Affected-status agreement rates between assessments (modified and unmodified CELFP-2 CLI scores and DELV-ST Part II Diagnostic Risk Status) were extremely low. Conclusions: The application of dialect-specific scoring modifications to standardized, norm-referenced assessments of language must be simultaneously viewed through the lenses of equity, practicality, and psychometry. The results of our multistage study reiterate the need for reliable methods of identifying risk for developmental language disorder within children who speak American English dialects other than GAE.
