Search

A search for Dark Sectors is performed using the unique M2 beam line at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. New particles ($X$) could be produced in the bremsstrahlung-like reaction of high energy 160 GeV muons impinging on an active target, $\mu N\rightarrow\mu NX$, followed by their decays, $X\rightarrow\text{invisible}$. The experimental signature would be a scattered single muon from the target, with about less than half of its initial energy and no activity in the sub-detectors located downstream the interaction point. The full sample of the 2022 run is analyzed through the missing energy/momentum channel, with a total statistics of $(1.98\pm0.02)\times10^{10}$ muons on target. We demonstrate that various muon-philic scenarios involving different types of mediators, such as scalar or vector particles, can be probed simultaneously with such a technique. For the vector-case, besides a $L_\mu-L_\tau$ $Z'$ vector boson, we also consider an invisibly decaying dark photon ($A'\rightarrow\text{invisible}$). This search is complementary to NA64 running with electrons and positrons, thus, opening the possibility to expand the exploration of the thermal light dark matter parameter space by combining the results obtained with the three beams., Comment: 24 pages, 22 figures

We present detailed analysis of the $T$-even lepton angular distribution in the Drell-Yan process including $\gamma/Z^0$ gauge boson exchange and using perturbative QCD based on the collinear factorization scheme at leading order in the $\alpha_s$ expansion. We focus on the study of the transverse momentum $Q_T$ dependence of the corresponding hadronic structure functions and angular coefficients up to next-next-to-leading order in the $Q_T^2/Q^2$ expansion. We analyze $Q_T$ dependence numerically and compare $T$-even angular coefficients integrated over rapidity with available data of the ATLAS Collaboration at LHC. We consider the possibility of discovering a light pseudoscalar particle $a$, which could the axion or an axion-like particle (ALP), interacting mainly with quarks using the electron and photon scattering reaction chain $e + Z \rightarrow e + \gamma + Z$; $\gamma + Z \rightarrow a + Z$ on nuclei in the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS. New bounds on the coupling strengths of the axion/ALP with quarks and of pseudoscalar mesons $P = \pi, \eta, \eta'$ with dark fermions are obtained by using existing upper bounds on invisible decay modes of $P$s including those recently derived by NA64. We present the first results from a proof-of-concept search for dark sectors via invisible decays of pseudoscalar $\eta$ and $\eta'$ mesons in the NA64h experiment at the CERN SPS. Our novel technique uses the charge-exchange reaction of 50 GeV $\pi^-$ on nuclei of an active target as the source of neutral mesons. The $\eta, \eta' \to invisible$ events would exhibit themselves via a striking signature - the complete disappearance of the incoming beam energy in the detector. No evidence for such events has been found with $2.9\times10^{9}$ pions on target accumulated during one day of data taking. This allows us to set a stringent limit on the branching ratio ${\rm Br}(\eta' \to invisible) < 2.1 \times 10^{-4}$ improving the current bound by a factor of $\simeq3$. We also set a limit on ${\rm Br}(\eta \to invisible) < 1.1 \times 10^{-4}$ comparable with the existing one. These results demonstrate the great potential of our approach and provide clear guidance on how to enhance and extend the sensitivity for dark sector physics from future searches for invisible neutral meson decays., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

In this study, we demonstrate the potential of the NA64 experiment at CERN SPS to search for New Physics processes involving $e\rightarrow\mu$ transitions after the collision of 100 GeV electrons with target nuclei. A new Dark Sector leptonic portal in which a scalar boson $\varphi$ could be produced in the lepton-flavor-changing bremsstrahlung-like reaction, $eN\rightarrow \mu N\varphi$, is used as benchmark process. In this work, we develop a realistic Monte Carlo simulation of the NA64 experimental setup implementing the differential and total production cross-section computed at exact tree-level and applying the Weisz\"{a}cker-Williams phase space approximation. Using this framework, we investigate the main background sources and calculate the expected sensitivity of the experiment. The results indicate that with minor setup optimization, NA64 can probe a large fraction of the available parameter space compatible with the muon $g-2$ anomaly and the Dark Matter relic predictions in the context of a new Dark Sector leptonic portal with $10^{11}$ EOT. The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

We calculate the perturbative $T$-odd contributions to the lepton angular distribution in the Drell-Yan process. Using collinear factorization, we work at the first order in QCD perturbation theory where these contributions appear, ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^2)$, and address both $W^\pm$ and $\gamma/Z^0$ boson exchange. A major focus of our calculation is on the regime where the boson's transverse momentum $Q_T$ is much smaller than its mass $Q$. We carefully expand our results up to next-to-next-to-leading power in $Q_T/Q$. Our calculation provides a benchmark for studies of $T$-odd contributions that employ transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions. We report on a search for a new $Z'$ ($L_\mu-L_\tau$) vector boson performed at the NA64 experiment employing a high energy muon beam and a missing energy-momentum technique. Muons from the M2 beamline at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron with a momentum of 160 GeV/c are directed to an active target. A signal event is a single scattered muon with momentum $<$ 80 GeV/c in the final state, accompanied by missing energy, i.e. no detectable activity in the downstream calorimeters. For a total statistic of $(1.98\pm0.02)\times10^{10}$ muons on target, no event is observed in the expected signal region. This allows us to set new limits on part of the remaining $(m_{Z'},\ g_{Z'})$ parameter space which could provide an explanation for the muon $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly. Additionally, our study excludes part of the parameter space suggested by the thermal Dark Matter relic abundance. We consider an experiment to search for dark sector particles in dark photon kinetic mixing model by analyze invisible and semi-invisible decays of neutral mesons $M^0 = \pi^0$, $\eta$, $\eta'$, $\omega$, $f_2(1270)$, produced in the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS. The approach proposed in Ref.~\cite{Gninenko:2014sxa} is to use the charge-exchange reactions $\pi^- + (A, Z) \to M^0 + (A,Z-1); M^0 \to$ invisible or semi-invisible of high-energy pions (or kaons) at a nuclei target as a source of $M^0$s, which subsequently decay invisibly into dark sector. This reaction chain would lead to a striking signature of the signal event - the complete disappearance of the beam energy in the setup. Using data obtained from the study of charge-exchange reactions at IHEP (Protvino) and Fermilab (Batavia) we show that the integral cross sections $\sigma$ for production of the neutral mesons $M^0$ are slightly deviate from phenomenological formula $\sigma \sim Z^{2/3}$, where $Z$ is the nuclei charge. In particular, we present the formulas for the differential and integral sections that explicitly depend on the Mandelstam and $Z$ variables. Derived formulas are used to predict the cross sections as a function of beam energy for several target nuclei, and to estimate the projection sensitivity for the proposed search for the $M^0\to$ semi-invisible and $M^0\to$ invisible decays through the vector portal to dark sector. We present the results of a missing-energy search for Light Dark Matter which has a new interaction with ordinary matter transmitted by a vector boson, called dark photon $A^\prime$. For the first time, this search is performed with a positron beam by using the significantly enhanced production of $A^\prime$ in the resonant annihilation of positrons with atomic electrons of the target nuclei, followed by the invisible decay of $A^\prime$ into dark matter. No events were found in the signal region with $(10.1 \pm 0.1)~\times~10^{9}$ positrons on target with 100 GeV energy. This allowed us to set new exclusion limits that, relative to the collected statistics, prove the power of this experimental technique. Thermal dark matter models with particle $\chi$ masses below the electroweak scale can provide an explanation for the observed relic dark matter density. This would imply the existence of a new feeble interaction between the dark and ordinary matter. We report on a new search for the sub-GeV $\chi$ production through the interaction mediated by a new vector boson, called the dark photon $A'$, in collisions of 100 GeV electrons with the active target of the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS. With $9.37\times10^{11}$ electrons on target collected during 2016-2022 runs NA64 probes for the first time the well-motivated region of parameter space of benchmark thermal scalar and fermionic dark matter models. No evidence for dark matter production has been found. This allows us to set the most sensitive limits on the $A'$ couplings to photons for masses $m_{A'} \lesssim 0.35$ GeV, and to exclude scalar and Majorana dark matter with the $\chi-A'$ coupling $\alpha_D \leq 0.1$ for masses $0.001 \lesssim m_\chi \lesssim 0.1$ GeV and $3m_\chi \leq m_{A'}$., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1906.00176

In this study, we present the measurement of the intrinsic hadronic contamination at the CERN SPS H4 beamline configured to transport electrons and positrons at 100 GeV/c momentum. The analysis was performed using data collected by the NA64-$e$ experiment in 2022. Our study is based on calorimetric measurements, exploiting the different interaction mechanisms of electrons and hadrons in the NA64-ECAL and NA64-HCAL detectors. We determined the intrinsic hadronic contamination by comparing the results obtained using the nominal electron/positron beamline configuration with those obtained in a dedicated setup, in which only hadrons impinged on the detector. The significant differences in the experimental signatures of electrons and hadrons motivated our approach, resulting in a small and well-controlled systematic uncertainty for the measurement. Our study allowed us to precisely determine the intrinsic hadronic contamination, which represents a crucial parameter for the NA64 experiment in which the hadron contaminants may result in non-trivial backgrounds. Moreover, we performed dedicated Monte Carlo simulations for the hadron production induced by the primary T2 target. We found a good agreement between measurements and simulation results, confirming the validity of the applied methodology and our evaluation of the intrinsic hadronic contamination.

The contribution of axial-vector mesons to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment through a light-by-light process is considered within a nonlocal quark model. The model is based on a four-quark interaction with scalar--pseudoscalar and vector--axial-vector sectors. While the transverse component of the axial-vector corresponds to a spin-1 particle, the unphysical longitudinal component is mixed with a pseudoscalar meson. The model parameters are re-fitted to the pion properties in the presence of pi-a_1 mixing. We study the non-abelian $SU(2)_D$ extension of the $U(1)_D$ Stueckelberg portal, which plays a role of the mediator between the Standard Model (SM) and Dark Sector (DS). This portal is specified by the Stueckelberg mechanism for generation of dark gauge boson masses. Proposed $U(1)_D\times SU(2)_D$ Stueckelberg portal has a connection with SM matter fields in analogy with Familon Model. We propose an extension of the Standard Model (SM) with a $U_{A'}(1)$ gauge invariant dark dector connected to the SM via a new portal -- the Stueckelberg portal, arising in the framework of dark photon $A'$ mass generation via Stueckelberg mechanism. This portal opens through the effective dim=5 operators constructed from the covariant term of the auxiliary Stueckelberg scalar field $\sigma$ providing flavor non-diagonal renormalizable couplings of both $\sigma$ and $A'$ to the SM fermions $\psi$. The Stueckelberg scalar plays a role of Goldstone boson in the generation of mass of the Dark Photon. Contrary to the conventional kinetic mixing portal, in our scenario flavor diagonal $A'$-$\psi$ couplings are not proportional to the fermion charges and are, in general, flavor nondiagonal. These features drastically change the phenomenology of dark photon $A'$ relaxing or avoiding some previously established experimental constraints. We focus on the phenomenology of the described scenario of the Stueckelberg portal in the lepton sector and analyze the contribution of the dark sector fields $A'$ to the anomalous magnetic moment of muon $(g-2)_{\mu}$, lepton flavor violating decays $l_{i}\to l_{k}\gamma$ and $\mu-e$ conversion in nuclei. Recently, the problem of spin and orbital angular momentum (AM) separation has widely been discussed. Nowadays, all discussions about the possibility to separate the spin AM from the orbital AM in the gauge invariant manner are based on the ansatz that the gluon field can be presented in form of the decomposition where the physical gluon components are additive to the pure gauge gluon components, i.e. $A_\mu = A_\mu^{\text{phys}}+A_\mu^{\text{pure}}$. In the present paper, we show that in the non-Abelian gauge theory this gluon decomposition has a strong mathematical evidence in the frame of the contour gauge conception. In other words, we reformulate the gluon decomposition ansatz as a theorem on decomposition and, then, we use the contour gauge to prove this theorem. In the first time, we also demonstrate that the contour gauge possesses the special kind of residual gauge related to the boundary field configurations and expressed in terms of the pure gauge fields. We discuss new ideas for consideration of loop diagrams and angular integrals in $D$-dimensions in QCD. In case of loop diagrams, we propose the covariant formalism of expansion of tensorial loop integrals into the orthogonal basis of linear combinations of external momenta. It gives a very simple presentation for the final results and is more convenient for calculations on computer algebra systems. In case of angular integrals we demonstrate how to simplify the integration of differential cross sections over polar angles. Also we derive the recursion relations, which allow to reduce all occurring angular integrals to a short set of basic scalar integrals. All order $\epsilon$-expansion is given for all angular integrals with up to two denominators based on the expansion of the basic integrals and using recursion relations. A geometric picture for partial fractioning is developed which provides a new rotational invariant algorithm to reduce the number of denominators., Comment: 134 pages, 8 figures

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR. The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $\alpha$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^5)$ with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by $(m_\mu/M_W)^2$ and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^2)$ and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha^3)$ the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads $a_\mu^\text{SM}=116\,591\,810(43)\times 10^{-11}$ and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7$\sigma$. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. We discuss constraints on soft CP-violating couplings of axion-like particles with photon and fermions by using data on electric dipole moments of Standard Model particles. In particular, for the ALP leptophilic scenario we derive bounds on CP-odd ALP-photon-photon coupling from data of the {\tt ACME} Collaboration on electron EDM. We also discuss prospects of the Storage Ring experiment to constrain the ALP-photon-photon coupling from data on proton EDM for the simplified hadrophilic interactions of ALP. The regarding constraints from experimental bounds on the muon and neutron EDMs are weak. We discuss new physics phenomenology of hidden scalar ($S$), pseudoscalar ($P$), vector ($V$) and axial-vector ($A$) particles coupled to nucleons and leptons, which could give contributions to proton charge radius, $(g-2)_\mu$, $^8$Be-$^4$He anomaly and electric dipole moment (EDM) of Standard Model (SM) particles. In particular, we estimate sensitivity of NA64$\mu$ experiment to observe muon missing energy events involving hidden scalar and vector particles. That analysis is based on {\tt GEANT4} Monte Carlo simulation of the signal process of muon scattering off target nuclei $\mu N \to \mu N S(V)$ followed by invisible boson decay into Dark Matter (DM) particles, $S(V)\to \chi \chi$. The existence of light sub-GeV bosons could possibly explain the muon $(g-2)$ anomaly observed. We also summarize existing bounds on ATOMKI $X17(J^P=0^-, 1^\pm)$ boson coupling with neutron, proton and electron. We implement these constraints to estimate the contribution of $P$, $V$ and $A$ particles to proton charge radius via direct 1-loop calculation of Sachs form factors. The analysis reveals the corresponding contribution is negligible. The light-by-light contribution from the axial-vector (AV) mesons exchanges to the muon anomalous magnetic moment is estimated in the framework of the nonlocal chiral quark model. The charged wave packets with non-Gaussian spatial profiles are shown to possess intrinsic multipole moments. The magnetic dipole moment and the electric quadrupole moment are found for a wide class of the packets, including the vortex electrons with orbital angular momentum $\ell$, the Airy beams, the so-called Schr\"odinger's cat states, and their generalizations. For the packets with no phase vortices, the electric quadrupole moment is shown to grow quadratically with the packet's width, $|Q_{\alpha\beta}| \sim e\cdot \sigma_{\perp}^2$, while it is also $|\ell|$ times enhanced for the vortex beams. For available beams of electron microscopes, these multipole moments are relatively easily adjusted and can be quite large, which affects the packets' electromagnetic fields and also allows one to develop new diagnostic tools for materials science, atomic and molecular physics, nuclear physics, and so forth., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

We study the Lepton Flavor Violating (LFV) $e(\mu)-\tau$ conversion in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) of electron (muon) on fixed-target nuclei. Our model-independent analysis is based on the set of the low-energy effective four-fermion LFV operators composed of leptons and quarks with the corresponding mass scales $\Lambda_{k}$ for each operator. Using the estimated sensitivity of the search for this LFV process in events with large missing energy in the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS, we derive lower limits for $\Lambda_{k}$ and compared them with the corresponding limits existing in the literature. We show that the DIS $e(\mu)-\tau$ conversion is able to provide a plenty of new limits as yet non-existing in the literature. We also analyzed the energy spectrum of the final-state $\tau$ and discussed viability of the observation of this process in the NA64 experiment and ones akin to it. We use the present upper bound on the neutron electric dipole moment to give an estimate for the upper limit of the CP-violating couplings of the $\eta(\eta')$ meson to the neutron. Using this result, we derive constraints on the CP-violating two-pion decays of the $\eta(\eta')$. Using the present upper bound on the neutron electric dipole moment, we give an estimate for the upper limit of the CP-violating couplings of the eta(eta') to the nucleon. Using this result, we then derive constraints on the CP-violating eta(eta')-pi-pi couplings, which define the two-pion CP-violating decays of the eta and eta' mesons. Our results are relevant for the running and planned measurements of rare decays of the eta and eta' mesons by the GlueX Collaboration at JLab and the LHCb Collaboration at CERN.

Soon, new experiments at FNAL and J-PARC will measure the muon anomalous magnetic moments with better accuracy than before. From theoretical side, the uncertainty of the standard model prediction is dominated by the hadronic contributions. The hadronic corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_mu, due to the gauge-invariant set of diagrams with dynamical quark loop light-by-light scattering insertions, are calculated in the framework of the nonlocal chiral quark model. These results complete calculations of all hadronic light-by-light scattering contributions to a_mu in the leading order in the 1/Nc expansion. The result for the quark loop contribution is a_mu^{HLbL,Loop}=(11.0+-0.9)*10^(-10), and the total result is a_mu^{HLbL,NxQM}=(16.8+-1.2)*10^(-10)., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

The electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments (AMM) are measured in experiments and studied in the Standard Model (SM) with the highest precision accessible in particle physics. The comparison of the measured quantity with the SM prediction for the electron AMM provides the best determination of the fine structure constant. The muon AMM is more sensitive to the appearance of New Physics effects and, at present, there appears to be a three- to four-standard deviation between the SM and experiment. The lepton AMMs are pure relativistic quantum correction effects and therefore test the foundations of relativistic quantum field theory in general, and of quantum electrodynamics (QED) and SM in particular, with highest sensitivity. The current status of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) problem is briefly presented. The corrections to the muon AMM coming from the effects of hadronic light-by-light (LbL) scattering due to light quark-antiquark exchange in pseudoscalar and scalar channels are estimated within the nonlocal chiral quark model (N$\chi$QM). Within this approach the full kinematic dependence on the photon and meson virtualities are taken into account. The light-by-light contribution from the lightest neutral pseudoscalar and scalar mesons to the anomalous magnetic moment of muon is calculated in the framework of the nonlocal SU(3)x SU(3) quark model. The model is based on chirally symmetric four-quark interaction of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type and Kobayashi-Maskawa-t`Hooft U_A(1) breaking six-quark interaction. Full kinematic dependence of vertices with off-shell mesons and photons in intermediate states in the light-by-light scattering amplitude is taken into account. The small positive contributions from the scalar mesons stabilize the total result with respect to change of model parameters and reduces to a_\mu^{LbL,PS+S}=(6.25\pm 0.83)x10^{-10}., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

The light-by-light contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of muon (g-2)_{\mu} from the hadronic exchanges in the neutral pseudoscalar meson channel is calculated in the nonlocal chiral quark model. The full kinematic dependence of the meson-two-photon vertices on the virtualities of the mesons and photons is taken into account. The status of various phenomenological and QCD short-distance constraints is discussed and the comparison with the predictions of other models is performed. It is demonstrated that the effect of the full kinematic dependence in the meson-photon vertices is to reduce the contribution of pseudoscalar exchages to a_\mu ^{PS,LbL} by approximately factor 1.5 in comparison with the most of previous estimates., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures; version for journal, minor corrections are made
