The nuclear shell model accurately describes the structure and dynamics of atomic nuclei. However, the exponential scaling of the basis size with the number of degrees of freedom hampers a direct numerical solution for heavy nuclei. In this work, we present a quantum annealing protocol to obtain nuclear ground states. We propose a tailored driver Hamiltonian that preserves a large gap and validate our approach in a dozen nuclei with basis sizes up to $10^5$ using classical simulations of the annealing evolution. We explore the relation between the spectral gap and the total time of the annealing protocol, assessing its accuracy by comparing the fidelity and energy relative error to classical benchmarks. While the nuclear Hamiltonian is non-local and thus challenging to implement in current setups, the estimated computational cost of our annealing protocol on quantum circuits is polynomial in the many-body basis size, paving the way to study heavier nuclei., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Simulating physical systems with variational quantum algorithms is a well-studied approach, but it is challenging to implement in current devices due to demands in qubit number and circuit depth. We show how limited knowledge of the system, namely the entropy of its subsystems, its entanglement structure or certain symmetries, can be used to reduce the cost of these algorithms with entanglement forging. To do so, we simulate a Fermi-Hubbard one-dimensional chain with a parametrized hopping term, as well as atomic nuclei ${}^{28}$Ne and ${}^{60}$Ti with the nuclear shell model. Using an adaptive variational quantum eigensolver we find significant reductions in both the maximum number of qubits (up to one fourth) and the amount of two-qubit gates (over an order of magnitude) required in the quantum circuits. Our findings indicate that our method, entropy-driven entanglement forging, can be used to adjust quantum simulations to the limitations of noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices.

Exploring the ground state properties of many-body quantum systems conventionally involves adiabatic processes, alongside exact diagonalization, in the context of quantum annealing or adiabatic quantum computation. Shortcuts to adiabaticity by counter-diabatic driving serve to accelerate these processes by suppressing energy excitations. Motivated by this, we develop variational quantum algorithms incorporating the auxiliary counterdiabatic interactions, comparing them with digitized adiabatic algorithms. These algorithms are then implemented on gate-based quantum circuits to explore the ground states of the Fermi-Hubbard model on honeycomb lattices, utilizing systems with up to 26 qubits. The comparison reveals that the counter-diabatic inspired ansatz is superior to traditional Hamiltonian variational ansatz. Furthermore, the number and duration of Trotter steps are analyzed to understand and mitigate errors. Given the model's relevance to materials in condensed matter, our study paves the way for using variational quantum algorithms with counterdiabaticity to explore quantum materials in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Over the last decade, conflicting values of the hypertriton ${}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H}$ lifetime $\tau({}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H})$ were extracted from relativistic heavy-ion (RHI) collision experiments, ranging from values compatible with the free-$\Lambda$ lifetime $\tau_\Lambda$-as expected naively for a very weakly bound $\Lambda$ in ${}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H}$-to lifetimes as short as $\tau({}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H}) \approx (0.4-0.7)\,\tau_\Lambda$. In a recent work [Phys. Lett. B 811, 135916 (2020)] we studied this ${}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H}$ lifetime puzzle theoretically using realistic three-body ${}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H}$ and ${}^3\mathrm{He}$ wave functions computed within the ab initio no-core shell model approach with interactions derived from chiral effective field theory. In particular, $\tau({}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H})$ was found to be strongly correlated with the $\Lambda$ separation energy $B_\Lambda$ in ${}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H}$, the value of which is rather poorly known experimentally and, in addition, is known to suffer from sizable theoretical uncertainties inherent in the employed nuclear and hypernuclear interaction models. In the present work we find that these uncertainties propagate into $\tau({}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H})$, and thus limit considerably the theoretical precision of its computed value. Although none of the conflicting RHI measured $\tau({}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H})$ values can be excluded, but rather can be attributed to a poor knowledge of $B_\Lambda$, we note the good agreement between the lifetime value $\tau({}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H})=238(27)$ ps computed at the lowest value $B_\Lambda=66$ keV reached by us and the very recent ALICE measured lifetime value $\tau^{\mathrm{ALICE}}({}_{\Lambda}^3\mathrm{H})=253(11)(6)$ ps associated with the ALICE measured $B_\Lambda$ value $B^{\mathrm{ALICE}}_\Lambda=102(63)(67)$ keV [Phys. Quantum entanglement offers a unique perspective into the underlying structure of strongly-correlated systems such as atomic nuclei. In this paper, we use quantum information tools to analyze the structure of light and medium-mass berillyum, oxygen, neon and calcium isotopes within the nuclear shell model. We use different entanglement metrics, including single-orbital entanglement, mutual information, and von Neumann entropies for different equipartitions of the shell-model valence space and identify mode-entanglement patterns related to the energy, angular momentum and isospin of the nuclear single-particle orbitals. We observe that the single-orbital entanglement is directly related to the number of valence nucleons and the energy structure of the shell, while the mutual information highlights signatures of proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairing, as well as nuclear deformation. Proton and neutron orbitals are weakly entangled by all measures, and in fact have the lowest von Neumann entropies among all possible equipartitions of the valence space. In contrast, orbitals with opposite angular momentum projection have relatively large entropies, especially in spherical nuclei. Conflicting values of the hypertriton lifetime $\tau({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H})$ were derived in relativistic heavy ion (RHI) collision experiments over the last decade. A very recent ALICE Collaboration measurement is the only experiment where the reported $\tau({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H})$ comes sufficiently close to the free-$\Lambda$ lifetime $\tau_\Lambda$,as expected naively for a very weakly bound $\Lambda$ in ${}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H}$. We revisited theoretically this ${}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H}$ lifetime puzzle, using ${}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H}$ and ${}^3\mathrm{He}$ wave functions computed within the abinitio no-core shell model employing interactions derived from chiral effective field theory to calculate the two-body decay rate $\Gamma({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H}\to{}^3\mathrm{He}+\pi^-)$. We found significant but opposing contributions arising from $\Sigma NN$ admixtures in ${}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H}$ and from $\pi^- -{}^3\mathrm{He}$ final-state interaction. To derive $\tau({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H})$, we evaluated the inclusive $\pi^-$ decay rate $\Gamma_{\pi^-}({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H})$ by using the measured branching ratio $\Gamma({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H}\to{}^3\mathrm{He}+\pi^-)/\Gamma_{\pi^-}({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H})$ and added the $\pi^0$ contributions through the $\Delta I = \frac{1}{2}$ rule. The resulting $\tau({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H})$ varies strongly with the rather poorly known $\Lambda$ separation energy $E_{\mathrm{sep}}({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H})$ and it is thus possible to associate each one of the distinct RHI $\tau({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H})$ measurements with its own underlying value of $E_{\mathrm{sep}}({}_\Lambda^3\mathrm{H})$., Comment: Invited talk given at the 14th International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics (HYP2022), Prague, Czech Republic, June 27 - July 1, 2022. We devise a quantum-circuit algorithm to solve the ground state and ground energy of artificial graphene. The algorithm implements a Trotterized adiabatic evolution from a purely tight-binding Hamiltonian to one including kinetic, spin-orbit and Coulomb terms. The initial state is obtained efficiently using Gaussian-state preparation, while the readout of the ground energy is organized into seventeen sets of measurements, irrespective of the size of the problem. The total depth of the corresponding quantum circuit scales polynomially with the size of the system. A full simulation of the algorithm is performed and ground energies are obtained for lattices with up to four hexagons. Our results are benchmarked with exact diagonalization for systems with one and two hexagons. For larger systems we use the exact statevector and approximate matrix product state simulation techniques. The latter allows to systematically trade off precision with memory and therefore to tackle larger systems. We analyze adiabatic and Trotterization errors, providing estimates for optimal periods and time discretizations given a finite accuracy. Atomtronics deals with matter-wave circuits of ultra-cold atoms manipulated through magnetic or laser-generated guides with different shapes and intensities. In this way, new types of quantum networks can be constructed, in which coherent fluids are controlled with the know-how developed in the atomic and molecular physics community. In particular, quantum devices with enhanced precision, control and flexibility of their operating conditions can be accessed. Concomitantly, new quantum simulators and emulators harnessing on the coherent current flows can also be developed. Here, we survey the landscape of atomtronics-enabled quantum technology and draw a roadmap for the field in the near future. We review some of the latest progresses achieved in matter-wave circuits design and atom-chips. Atomtronic networks are deployed as promising platforms for probing many-body physics with a new angle and a new twist. The latter can be done both at the level of equilibrium and non-equilibrium situations. Numerous relevant problems in mesoscopic physics, like persistent currents and quantum transport in circuits of fermionic or bosonic atoms, are studied through a new lens. We summarize some of the atomtronics quantum devices and sensors. Finally, we discuss alkali-earth and Rydberg atoms as potential platforms for the realization of atomtronic circuits with special features., Comment: 113 latex pages, 83 figs. We consider attractive and repulsive condensates in a ring trap stirred by a weak link, and analyze the spectrum of solitonic trains dragged by the link, by means of analytical expressions for the wave functions, energies and currents. The precise evolution of current production and destruction in terms of defect formation in the ring and in terms of stirring is studied. We find that any excited state can be coupled to the ground state through two proposed methods: either by adiabatically tuning the link's strength and velocity through precise cycles which avoid the critical velocities and thus unstable regions, or by keeping the link still while setting an auxiliary potential and imprinting a nonlinear phase as the potential is turned off. We consider the solution of the quantum Coulomb problem in one dimension with the most general connection condition at the origin. The divergence of the derivative of the wave function at the origin invalidates the standard current conservation approach. We explore two approaches, Wronskian self-adjoint extension method and cutoff regularization method, and establish their mutual relations, thereby clarifying the physical contents of the connection parameters. We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive interactions confined in a 1D ring where a Dirac delta is rotating at constant speed. The spectrum of stationary solutions in the delta comoving frame is analyzed in terms of the nonlinear coupling, delta velocity, and delta strength, which may take positive and negative values. It is organized into a set of energy levels conforming a multiple swallowtail structure in parameter space, consisting in bright solitons, gray and dark solitonic trains, and vortices. Analytical expressions in terms Jacobi elliptic functions are provided for the wave functions and chemical potentials. We compute the critical velocities and perform a Bogoliubov analysis for the ground state and first few excited levels, establishing possible adiabatic transitions between the stationary and stable solutions. A set of adiabatic cycles is proposed in which gray solitons and vortices of arbitrary quantized angular momenta are obtained from the ground state by setting and unsetting a rotating delta., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

We analyze the 1D cubic nonlinear stationary Schr\"odinger equation on a ring with a defect for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearity. All possible $\delta$ and $\delta'$ boundary conditions are considered at the defect, computing for each of them the real eigenfunctions, written as Jacobi elliptic functions, and eigenvalues for the ground state and first few excited energy levels. All six independent Jacobi elliptic functions are found to be solutions of some boundary condition. We also provide a way to map all eigenfunctions satisfying $\delta$/$\delta'$ conditions to any other general boundary condition or point-like potential., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

This paper is mainly inspired by the conjecture about the existence of bound states for magnetic Neumann Laplacians on planar wedges of any aperture $\phi\in (0,\pi)$. So far, a proof was only obtained for apertures $\phi\lesssim 0.511\pi$. The conviction in the validity of this conjecture for apertures $\phi\gtrsim 0.511\pi$ mainly relied on numerical computations. In this paper we succeed to prove the existence of bound states for any aperture $\phi \lesssim 0.583\pi$ using a variational argument with suitably chosen test functions. Employing some more involved test functions and combining a variational argument with computer-assistance, we extend this interval up to any aperture $\phi \lesssim 0.595\pi$. Moreover, we analyse the same question for closely related problems concerning magnetic Robin Laplacians on wedges and for magnetic Schr\"odinger operators in the plane with $\delta$-interactions supported on broken lines., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures. Deformations of single-wall carbon nanotubes are investigated within the tight-binding model with deformation-dependent hopping energies. We show that the nanotubes tend to twist and shrink spontaneously at zero temperature. The explicit values of the deformation parameters are computed for a wide range of nanotubes with varying diameter and chirality. The changes of the spectral gap associated with the spontaneous deformation are shown to depend on the chirality of the nanotubes., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

The potential in coordinate space for the $\Lambda N\to NN$ weak transition, which drives the weak decay of most hypernuclei, is derived within the effective field theory formalism up to next-to-leading order. This coordinate space potential allows us to discuss how the different contributions to the potential add up at the different scales. Explicit expressions are given for each two-pion-exchange diagram contributing to the interaction. The potential is also reorganized into spin and isospin operators, and the coefficient for each operator is given in analytical form and represented in coordinate space. The relevance of explicitly including the mass differences among the baryons appearing in the two-pion-exchange diagrams is also discussed in detail.

We consider the $\Lambda N\to NN$ weak transition, responsible for a large fraction of the non-mesonic weak decay of hypernuclei. We follow on the previously derived effective field theory and compute the next-to-leading one-loop corrections. Explicit expressions for all diagrams are provided, which result in contributions to all relevant partial waves.

The relation between the low energy constants appearing in the effective field theory description of the \Lambda N --> N N transition potential and the parameters of the one-meson-exchange model previously developed are obtained. We extract the relative importance of the different exchange mechanisms included in the meson picture by means of a comparison to the corresponding operational structures appearing in the effective approach. The ability of this procedure to obtain the weak baryon-baryon-meson couplings for a possible scalar exchange is also discussed., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures
