Highly forbidden $\beta$ decays provide a sensitive test to nuclear models in a regime in which the decay goes through high spin-multipole states, similar to the neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay process. There are only 3 nuclei ($^{50}$V, $^{113}$Cd, $^{115}$In) which undergo a $4^{\rm th}$ forbidden non-unique $\beta$ decay. In this work, we compare the experimental $^{113}$Cd spectrum to theoretical spectral shapes in the framework of the spectrum-shape method. We measured with high precision, with the lowest energy threshold and the best energy resolution ever, the $\beta$ spectrum of $^{113}$Cd embedded in a 0.43 kg CdWO$_4$ crystal, operated over 26 days as a bolometer at low temperature in the Canfranc underground laboratory (Spain). We performed a Bayesian fit of the experimental data to three nuclear models (IBFM-2, MQPM and NSM) allowing the reconstruction of the spectral shape as well as the half-life. The fit has two free parameters, one of which is the effective weak axial-vector coupling constant, $g_A^{\text{eff}}$, which resulted in $g_A^{\text{eff}}$ between 1.0 and 1.2, compatible with a possible quenching. Based on the fit, we measured the half-life of the $^{113}$Cd $\beta$ decay including systematic uncertainties as $7.73^{+0.60}_{-0.57} \times 10^{15}$ yr, in agreement with the previous experiments. On-chip thermometry at deep-cryogenic temperatures is vital in quantum computing applications to accurately quantify the effect of increased temperature on qubit performance and to implement real-time thermal management on quantum processors. In this work, we present a sub-1K temperature sensor in CMOS technology based on the temperature dependence of the critical current of a superconducting (SC) thin-film. The sensor is implemented in 22-nm fully depleted silicon on insulator (FDSOI) technology and comprises a 6-nA-resolution current-output digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) with a SC thin-film as a gain element, and a voltage comparator. The circuit dissipates 1.5uW and is demonstrated operating at ambient temperatures as low as 15mK, providing a variable temperature resolution reaching sub-10mK., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

This is the third in a series of three papers in which we study a lattice gas subject to Kawasaki dynamics at inverse temperature $\beta>0$ in a large finite box $\Lambda_\beta \subset \mathbb{Z}^2$ whose volume depends on $\beta$. Each pair of neighbouring particles has a negative binding energy $-U<0$, while each particle has a positive activation energy $\Delta>0$. The initial configuration is drawn from the grand-canonical ensemble restricted to the set of configurations where all the droplets are subcritical. Our goal is to describe, in the metastable regime $\Delta \in (U,2U)$ and in the limit as $\beta\to\infty$, how and when the system nucleates, i.e., creates a critical droplet somewhere in $\Lambda_\beta$ that subsequently grows by absorbing particles from the surrounding gas. In the first paper we showed that subcritical droplets behave as quasi-random walks. In the second paper we used the results in the first paper to analyse how subcritical droplets form and dissolve on multiple space-time scales when the volume is moderately large, namely, $|\Lambda_\beta| = \mathrm{e}^{\theta\beta}$ with $\Delta < \theta < 2\Delta-U$. In the present paper we consider the setting where the volume is very large, namely, $|\Lambda_\beta| = \mathrm{e}^{\Theta\beta}$ with $\Delta < \Theta < \Gamma-(2\Delta-U)$, where $\Gamma$ is the energy of the critical droplet in the local model with fixed volume, and use the results in the first two papers to identify the nucleation time and the tube of typical trajectories towards nucleation. We will see that in a very large volume critical droplets appear more or less independently in boxes of moderate volume, a phenomenon referred to as homogeneous nucleation. We report on the development of thermal detectors based on large-size tellurium dioxide crystals (45x45x45 mm), containing tellurium enriched in $^{130}$Te to about 91%, for the CROSS double-beta decay experiment. A powder used for the crystals growth was additionally purified by the directional solidification method, resulting in the reduction of the concentration of impurities by a factor 10, to a few ppm of the total concentration of residual elements (the main impurity is Fe). The purest part of the ingot (the first ~200 mm, about 80% of the total length of the cylindrical part of the ingot) was determined by scanning segregation profiles of impurities and used for the $^{130}$TeO$_2$ powder production with no evidence of re-contamination. The crystal growth was verified with precursors produced from powder with natural Te isotopic composition, and two small-size (20x20x10 mm) samples were tested at a sea-level laboratory showing high bolometric and spectrometric performance together with acceptable $^{210}$Po content (below 10 mBq/kg). This growth method was then applied for the production of six large cubic $^{130}$TeO$_2$ crystals and 4 of them were taken randomly to be characterized at the Canfranc underground laboratory, in the CROSS-dedicated low-background cryogenic facility. Two $^{130}$TeO$_2$ samples were coated with a thin, $O$(100 nm), metal film in form of Al layer (on 4 sides) or AlPd grid (on a single side) to investigate the possibility to tag surface events by pulse-shape discrimination. Similarly to the small natural precursors, large-volume $^{130}$TeO$_2$ bolometers show high performance and even better internal purity ($^{210}$Po activity $\sim$ 1 mBq/kg, while activities of $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra are below 0.01 mBq/kg), satisfying requirements for the CROSS and, potentially, next-generation experiments., Comment: Submitted to JINST; 22 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

The CROSS experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay using a specific mechanical structure to hold thermal detectors. The design of the structure was tuned to minimize the background contribution, keeping an optimal detector performance. A single module of the structure holds two scintillating bolometers (with a crystal size of 45x45x45 mm and a Ge slab facing the crystal's upper side) in the Cu frame, allowing for a modular construction of a large-scale array. Two designs are released: the initial $Thick$ version contains around 15% of Cu over the crystal mass (lithium molybdate, LMO), while this ratio is reduced to ~6% in a finer ($Slim$) design. Both designs were tested extensively at aboveground (IJCLab, France) and underground (LSC, Spain) laboratories. In particular, at LSC we used a pulse-tube-based CROSS facility to operate a 6-crystal array of LMOs enriched/depleted in $^{100}$Mo. The tested LMOs show high spectrometric performance in both designs; notably, the measured energy resolution is 5--7 keV FWHM at 2615 keV $\gamma$s, nearby the Q-value of $^{100}$Mo (3034 keV). Due to the absence of a reflective cavity around LMOs, a low scintillation signal is detected by Ge bolometers: ~0.3 keV (150 photons) for 1-MeV $\gamma$($\beta$) LMO-event. Despite that, an acceptable separation between $\alpha$ and $\gamma$($\beta$) events is achieved with most devices. The highest efficiency is reached with light detectors in the $Thick$ design thanks to a lower baseline noise width (0.05--0.09 keV RMS) when compared to that obtained in the $Slim$ version (0.10--0.35 keV RMS). Given the pivotal role of bolometric photodetectors for particle identification and random coincidences rejection, we will use the structure here described with upgraded light detectors, featuring thermal signal amplification via the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke effect, as also demonstrated in the present work., Comment: Submitted to JINST; 31 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables

The current experiments searching for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay also collect large statistics of Standard Model allowed two-neutrino double-$\beta$ ($2\nu\beta\beta$) decay events. These can be used to search for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics via $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay spectral distortions. $^{100}$Mo has a natural advantage due to its relatively short half-life, allowing higher $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay statistics at equal exposures compared to the other isotopes. We demonstrate the potential of the dual read-out bolometric technique exploiting a $^{100}$Mo exposure of 1.47 kg $\times$ y, acquired in the CUPID-Mo experiment at the Modane underground laboratory (France). We set limits on $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays with the emission of one or more Majorons, on $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay with Lorentz violation, and $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay with a sterile neutrino emission. In this analysis, we investigate the systematic uncertainty induced by modeling the $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay spectral shape parameterized through an improved model, an effect never considered before. This work motivates searches for BSM processes in the upcoming CUPID experiment, which will collect the largest amount of $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay events among the next-generation experiments.

The Lunar Gravitational-wave Antenna (LGWA) is a proposed array of next-generation inertial sensors to monitor the response of the Moon to gravitational waves (GWs). Given the size of the Moon and the expected noise produced by the lunar seismic background, the LGWA would be able to observe GWs from about 1 mHz to 1 Hz. This would make the LGWA the missing link between space-borne detectors like LISA with peak sensitivities around a few millihertz and proposed future terrestrial detectors like Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer. In this article, we provide a first comprehensive analysis of the LGWA science case including its multi-messenger aspects and lunar science with LGWA data. We also describe the scientific analyses of the Moon required to plan the LGWA mission.

In the research on FANETs (Flying Ad-Hoc Networks) and distributed coordination of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), also known as drones, there are many studies that validate their proposals through simulations. Simulations are important, but beyond them, there is also a need for real-world tests to validate the proposals and enhance results. However, field experiments involving drones and FANETs are not trivial, and this work aims to share experiences and results obtained during the construction of a testbed actively used in comparing simulations and field tests., Comment: in Portuguese language

This work discusses the benefits of having multiple simulated environments with different degrees of realism for the development of algorithms in scenarios populated by autonomous nodes capable of communication and mobility. This approach aids the development experience and generates robust algorithms. It also proposes GrADyS-SIM NextGen as a solution that enables development on a single programming language and toolset over multiple environments with varying levels of realism. Finally, we illustrate the usefulness of this approach with a toy problem that makes use of the simulation framework, taking advantage of the proposed environments to iteratively develop a robust solution., Comment: 11 pages

Recent developments in acoustic signal processing have seen the integration of deep learning methodologies, alongside the continued prominence of classical wave expansion-based approaches, particularly in sound field reconstruction. Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have emerged as a novel framework, bridging the gap between data-driven and model-based techniques for addressing physical phenomena governed by partial differential equations. This paper introduces a PINN-based approach for the recovery of arbitrary volumetric acoustic fields. The network incorporates the wave equation to impose a regularization on signal reconstruction in the time domain. This methodology enables the network to learn the underlying physics of sound propagation and allows for the complete characterization of the sound field based on a limited set of observations. The proposed method's efficacy is validated through experiments involving speech signals in a real-world environment, considering varying numbers of available measurements. Moreover, a comparative analysis is undertaken against state-of-the-art frequency-domain and time-domain reconstruction methods from existing literature, highlighting the increased accuracy across the various measurement configurations.

We report correlations in underground seismic measurements with horizontal separations of several hundreds of meters to a few kilometers in the frequency range 0.01Hz to 40Hz. These seismic correlations could threaten science goals of planned interferometric gravitational-wave detectors such as the Einstein Telescope as well as atom interferometers such as MIGA and ELGAR. We use seismic measurements from four different sites, i.e. the former Homestake mine (USA) as well as two candidate sites for the Einstein Telescope, Sos Enattos (IT) and Euregio Maas-Rhein (NL-BE-DE) and the site housing the MIGA detector, LSBB (FR). At all sites, we observe significant coherence for at least 50% of the time in the majority of the frequency region of interest. Based on the observed correlations in the seismic fields, we predict levels of correlated Newtonian noise from body waves. We project the effect of correlated Newtonian noise from body waves on the capabilities of the triangular design of the Einstein Telescope's to observe an isotropic gravitational-wave background (GWB) and find that, even in case of the most quiet site, its sensitivity will be affected up to $\sim$20Hz. The resolvable amplitude of a GWB signal with a negatively sloped power-law behaviour would be reduced by several orders of magnitude. However, the resolvability of a power-law signal with a slope of e.g. $\alpha=0$ ($\alpha=2/3$) would be more moderately affected by a factor $\sim$ 6-9 ($\sim$3-4) in case of a low noise environment. Furthermore, we bolster confidence in our results by showing that transient noise features have a limited impact on the presented results.

BINGO is a project aiming to set the grounds for large-scale bolometric neutrinoless double-beta-decay experiments capable of investigating the effective Majorana neutrino mass at a few meV level. It focuses on developing innovative technologies (a detector assembly, cryogenic photodetectors and active veto) to achieve a very low background index, of the order of $10^{-5}$ counts/(keV kg yr) in the region of interest. The BINGO demonstrator, called MINI-BINGO, is designed to investigate the promising double-beta-decay isotopes $^{100}$Mo and $^{130}$Te and it will be composed of Li$_2$MoO$_4$ and TeO$_2$ crystals coupled to bolometric light detectors and surrounded by a Bi$_4$Ge$_3$O$_{12}$-based veto. This will allow us to reject a significant background in bolometers caused by surface contamination from $\alpha$-active radionuclides by means of light yield selection and to mitigate other sources of background, such as surface contamination from $\beta$-active radionuclides, external $\gamma$ radioactivity, and pile-up due to random coincidence of background events. This paper describes an R\&D program towards the BINGO goals, particularly focusing on the development of an innovative assembly designed to reduce the passive materials within the line of sight of the detectors, which is expected to be a dominant source of background in next-generation bolometric experiments. Metasurfaces represent a new frontier in materials science paving for unprecedented methods of controlling electromagnetic waves, with a range of applications spanning from sensing to imaging and communications. For pulsed terahertz generation, metasurfaces offer a gateway to tuneable thin emitters that can be utilised for large-area imaging, microscopy and spectroscopy. In literature THz-emitting metasurfaces generally exhibit high absorption, being based either on metals or on semiconductors excited in highly resonant regimes. Here we propose the use of a fully dielectric semiconductor exploiting morphology-mediated resonances and inherent quadratic nonlinear response. Our system exhibits a remarkable 40-fold efficiency enhancement compared to the unpatterned at the peak of the optimised wavelength range, demonstrating its potential as scalable emitter design.

Mobile robotic systems are becoming increasingly popular. These systems are used in various indoor applications, raging from warehousing and manufacturing to test benches for assessment of advanced control strategies, such as artificial intelligence (AI)-based control solutions, just to name a few. Scaled robotic cars are commonly equipped with a hierarchical control acthiecture that includes tasks dedicated to vehicle state estimation and control. This paper covers both aspects by proposing (i) a federeted extended Kalman filter (FEKF), and (ii) a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) path tracking controller trained via an expert demonstrator to expedite the learning phase and increase robustess to the simulation-to-reality gap. The paper also presents the formulation of a vehicle model along with an effective yet simple procedure for identifying tis paramters. The experimentally validated model is used for (i) supporting the design of the FEKF and (ii) serving as a digital twin for training the proposed DRL-based path tracking algorithm. Experimental results confirm the ability of the FEKF to improve the estimate of the mobile robot's position. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the DRL path tracking strateguy is experimentally tested along manoeuvres not considered during training, showing also the ability of the AI-based solution to outpeform model-based control strategies and the demonstrator. Flexible canopy flows are often encountered in natural scenarios, e.g., when crops sway in the wind or when submerged kelp forests are agitated by marine currents. Here, we provide a detailed characterisation of the turbulent flow developed above and between the flexible filaments of a fully submerged dense canopy and we describe their dynamical response to the turbulent forcing. We investigate a wide range of flexibilities, encompassing the case in which the filaments are completely rigid and standing upright as well as that where they are fully compliant to the flow and deflected in the streamwise direction. We are thus able to isolate the effect of the canopy flexibility on the drag and on the inner-outer flow interactions, as well as the two flapping regimes of the filaments already identified for a single fiber. Furthermore, we offer a detailed description of the Reynolds stresses throughout the wall-normal direction resorting to the Lumley triangle formalism, and we show the multi-layer nature of turbulence inside and above the canopy. The relevance of our investigation is thus twofold: the fundamental physical understanding developed here paves the way towards the investigation of more complex and realistic scenarios, while we also provide a thorough characterisation of the turbulent state that can prove useful in the development of accurate turbulence models for RANS and LES., Comment: 33 pages, 23 figures

We characterize the dynamical behavior of a clamped flexible fiber immersed in wall turbulence over a wide range of natural frequencies by means of direct numerical simulations. Only two flapping states are possible: one where the fiber oscillates at the characteristic frequency of the largest turbulent eddies and another where the natural structural response dominates. The former is obtained in the more flexible cases, while the latter in the more rigid ones. We observe here for the first time that in the turbulence dominated regime the fiber always sways at a frequency proportional to the largest scale of the flow, regardless of its structural parameters.
