We introduce a technique for extracting microstructural geometry from NMR lineshape analysis in porous materials at angstrom-scale resolution with the use of weak magnetic field gradients. Diverging from the generally held view of FID signals undergoing simple exponential decay, we show that a detailed analysis of the line shape can unravel structural geometry on much smaller scales than previously thought. While the original q-space PFG NMR relies on strong magnetic field gradients in order to achieve high spatial resolution, our current approach reaches comparable or higher resolution using much weaker gradients. As a model system, we simulated gas diffusion for xenon confined within carbon nanotubes over a range of temperatures and nanotube diameters in order to unveil manifestations of confinement in the diffusion behavior. We report a multiscale scheme that couples the above MD simulations with the generalized Langevin equation to estimate the transport properties of interest for this problem, such as diffusivity coefficients and NMR lineshapes, using the Green-Kubo correlation function to correctly evaluate time-dependent diffusion. Our results highlight how NMR methodologies can be adapted as effective means towards structural investigation at very small scales when dealing with complicated geometries. Microwave remote sensing offers a powerful tool for monitoring the growth of short, dense vegetation like soybean. As the plants mature, changes in their biomass and 3-D structure impact the electromagnetic (EM) backscatter signal. This backscatter information holds valuable insights into crop health and yield, prompting the need for a comprehensive understanding of how structural and biophysical properties of soybeans as well as soil characteristics contribute to the overall backscatter signature. In this study, a full-wave model is developed for simulating L-band backscatter from soybean fields. Leveraging the ANSYS High-Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) framework, the model solves for the scattering of EM waves from realistic 3-D structural models of soybean, explicitly incorporating the interplant scattering effects. The model estimates of backscatter match well with the field observations from the SMAPVEX16-MicroWEX and SMAPVEX12, with average differences of 1-2 dB for co-pol and less than 4 dB for cross-pol. Furthermore, the model effectively replicates the temporal dynamics of crop backscatter throughout the growing season. The HFSS analysis revealed that the stems and pods are the primary contributors to HH-pol backscatter, while the branches contribute to VV-pol, and leaves impact the cross-pol signatures. In addition, a sensitivity study with 3-D bare soil surface resulted in an average variation of 8 dB in co- and cross-pol, even when the root mean square height and correlation length were held constant.

While progress has been made in the domain of video-language understanding, current state-of-the-art algorithms are still limited in their ability to understand videos at high levels of abstraction, such as news-oriented videos. Alternatively, humans easily amalgamate information from video and language to infer information beyond what is visually observable in the pixels. An example of this is watching a news story, where the context of the event can play as big of a role in understanding the story as the event itself. Towards a solution for designing this ability in algorithms, we present a large-scale analysis on an in-house dataset collected by the Reuters News Agency, called Reuters Video-Language News (ReutersViLNews) dataset which focuses on high-level video-language understanding with an emphasis on long-form news. The ReutersViLNews Dataset consists of long-form news videos collected and labeled by news industry professionals over several years and contains prominent news reporting from around the world. Each video involves a single story and contains action shots of the actual event, interviews with people associated with the event, footage from nearby areas, and more. ReutersViLNews dataset contains videos from seven subject categories: disaster, finance, entertainment, health, politics, sports, and miscellaneous with annotations from high-level to low-level, title caption, visual video description, high-level story description, keywords, and location. We first present an analysis of the dataset statistics of ReutersViLNews compared to previous datasets. Then we benchmark state-of-the-art approaches for four different video-language tasks. The results suggest that news-oriented videos are a substantial challenge for current video-language understanding algorithms and we conclude by providing future directions in designing approaches to solve the ReutersViLNews dataset.

Selective control of individual spin qubits is needed for scalable quantum computing based on spin states. Achieving high-fidelity in both single and two-qubit gates, essential components of universal quantum computers, necessitates highly localized control fields. These fields must be capable of addressing specific spin qubits while minimizing gate errors and cross-talk in adjacent qubits. Overcoming the challenge of generating a localized radio-frequency magnetic field, in the absence of elementary magnetic monopoles, we introduce a technique that combines divergent and convergent nanoscale magnetic skyrmions. This approach produces a precise control field that manipulates spin qubits with high fidelity. We propose the use of 2D skyrmions, which are 2D analogues of 3D hedgehog structures. The latter are emergent magnetic monopoles, but difficult to fabricate. The 2D skyrmions, on the other hand, can be fabricated using standard semiconductor foundry processes. Our comparative analysis of the density matrix evolution and gate fidelities in scenarios involving proximal skyrmions and nanomagnets indicates potential gate fidelities surpassing 99.95% for {\pi}/2-gates and 99.90% for {\pi}-gates. Notably, the skyrmion configuration generates a significantly lower field on neighboring spin qubits, i.e. 15 times smaller field on a neighboring qubit compared to nanomagnets that produces the same field at the controlled qubit, making it a more suitable candidate for scalable quantum control architectures by reducing disturbances in adjacent qubits.

Weighting is a general and often-used method for statistical adjustment. Weighting has two objectives: first, to balance covariate distributions, and second, to ensure that the weights have minimal dispersion and thus produce a more stable estimator. A recent, increasingly common approach directly optimizes the weights toward these two objectives. However, this approach has not yet been feasible in large-scale datasets when investigators wish to flexibly balance general basis functions in an extended feature space. For example, many balancing approaches cannot scale to national-level health services research studies. To address this practical problem, we describe a scalable and flexible approach to weighting that integrates a basis expansion in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space with state-of-the-art convex optimization techniques. Specifically, we use the rank-restricted Nystr\"{o}m method to efficiently compute a kernel basis for balancing in {nearly} linear time and space, and then use the specialized first-order alternating direction method of multipliers to rapidly find the optimal weights. In an extensive simulation study, we provide new insights into the performance of weighting estimators in large datasets, showing that the proposed approach substantially outperforms others in terms of accuracy and speed. Finally, we use this weighting approach to conduct a national study of the relationship between hospital profit status and heart attack outcomes in a comprehensive dataset of 1.27 million patients. We find that for-profit hospitals use interventional cardiology to treat heart attacks at similar rates as other hospitals, but have higher mortality and readmission rates.

The dynamics of viscoelastic fluids are governed by a memory function, essential yet challenging to compute, especially when diffusion faces boundary restrictions. We propose a computational method that captures memory effects by analyzing the time-correlation function of the pressure tensor, a viscosity indicator, through the Stokes-Einstein equation's analytic continuation into the Laplace domain. We integrate this equation with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to derive necessary parameters. Our approach computes NMR lineshapes using a generalized diffusion coefficient, accounting for temperature and confinement geometry. This method directly links the memory function with thermal transport parameters, facilitating accurate NMR signal computation for non-Markovian fluids in confined geometries., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

Quantum algorithmics with single spins poses serious technological challenges such as precision fabrication, rapid decoherence, atomic-scale addressing and readout. To circumvent atomic-scale challenges, we examine the case of fully polarized mesoscopic spin ensembles (spin-coherent states) whose total angular momenta states map to qudit submanifolds. We show that in the limit where the size of the ensembles is small compared to their separation, it is possible to treat them as qubits with an effective coupling strength that scales with the number of spins. If the spins within each ensemble are decoupled (e.g., via control fields, spinning or diffusional averaging or materials engineering), one- and two-qubit gate operations can be implemented with high fidelities., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

The temperature dependence of the nuclear free induction decay in the presence of a magnetic-field gradient was found to exhibit motional narrowing in gases upon heating, a behavior that is opposite to that observed in liquids. This has led to the revision of the theoretical framework to include a more detailed description of particle trajectories, since decoherence mechanisms depend on histories. In the case of free diffusion and single component, the new model yields the correct temperature trends. Inclusion of boundaries in the current formalism is not straightforward. We present a hybrid SDE-MD (stochastic differential equation - molecular dynamics) approach whereby MD is used to compute an effective viscosity and the latter is fed to the SDE to predict the lineshape. The theory is in agreement with experiments. This two-scale approach, which bridges the gap between short (molecular collisions) and long (nuclear induction) timescales, paves the way for the modeling of complex environments with boundaries, mixtures of chemical species and intermolecular potentials., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures
