1. Extrinsic Calibration of Multiple LiDARs for a Mobile Robot based on Floor Plane And Object Segmentation

Abstract

Mobile robots equipped with multiple light detection and ranging (LiDARs) and capable of recognizing their surroundings are increasing due to the minitualization and cost reduction of LiDAR. This paper proposes a target-less extrinsic calibration method of multiple LiDARs with non-overlapping field of view (FoV). The proposed method uses accumulated point clouds of floor plane and objects while in motion. It enables accurate calibration with challenging configuration of LiDARs that directed towards the floor plane, caused by biased feature values. Additionally, the method includes a noise removal module that considers the scanning pattern to address bleeding points, which are noises of significant source of error in point cloud alignment using high-density LiDARs. Evaluations through simulation demonstrate that the proposed method achieved higher accuracy extrinsic calibration with two and four LiDARs than conventional methods, regardless type of objects. Furthermore, the experiments using a real mobile robot has shown that our proposed noise removal module can eliminate noise more precisely than conventional methods, and the estimated extrinsic parameters have successfully created consistent 3D maps., Comment: 8pages, 10figures

Abstract

The Justin--Huzita--Hatori Axiom 6 of origami related to so-called neusis construction assures the solution of real cubic equations shown by Beloch in 1936. We investigate a certain real cubic curve $F(x,y)=0$, say, Beloch's curve that appears in the algorithm and prove that its shape is determined by the signature of the Hessian $\mathcal{H}_F=-4(4p+q^2)$ at its uniquely existing singular point $P(p,q)$. Abstract

Abstract Introduction Narcolepsy is a chronic brain disease characterized by excessive sleepiness and classified into two types based on the presence of cataplexy or reduced level of cerebrospinal fluid orexin-A (hypocretine-1): narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) and narcolepsy type 2 (NT2). These two types differ in symptoms other than cataplexy, as well as in certain examination findings. The present study aimed to investigate the clinical and electrophysiological characteristics of NT1 by comparing its features with those of NT2. Methods Subjects were 118 first diagnosed and untreated patients with narcolepsy. They underwent both polysomnography (PSG) and multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) as a sleep test. Diagnosis was established in accordance with International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Third Edition, and the type of narcolepsy was determined by the presence or absence of cataplexy, patients with cataplexy were diagnosed with NT1, and without cataplexy were diagnosed with NT2. We investigated characteristics of the patients, PSG and MSLT outcomes, and applied a suite of duly statistical analysis to account for each parameter. Results Among the 118 subjects, 35 patients (29.7%) were NT1, and 83 patients (70.3%) were NT2. Excessive daytime sleepiness which was measured by Japanese version of Epworth sleepiness scale (JESS) was significantly higher in NT1 than NT2. Furthermore, the presence of sleep hallucination (n = 29, 82.9%), sleep paralysis (n = 18, 51.4%), difficult maintaining sleep (n = 22, 62.9%), and sleep related movement and behavior disorders (n = 7, 20.0%) were significantly higher in NT1 than those in NT2. Additionally, parameters indicative of sleep fragmentation, such as the arousal index and wake time after sleep onset measured in PSG, exhibited a statistically significant increase in NT1 when contrasted with NT2. Conclusions Fragmentation of nocturnal sleep which is explained by the high arousal index and the long wake time after sleep onset on PSG was considered a characteristic finding of NT1 compared with NT2, and the patients with NT1 experienced greater difficulty of maintaining sleep. Concomitantly, the prevalence of NT1 in this study may be a representative value of the prevalence of NT1 among the patients with narcolepsy in Japan.

Abstract

How a black hole accretes matter and how this process is regulated are fundamental but unsolved questions in astrophysics. In transient black-hole binaries, a lot of mass stored in an accretion disk is suddenly drained to the central black hole because of thermal-viscous instability. This phenomenon is called an outburst and is observable at various wavelengths (Frank et al., 2002). During the outburst, the accretion structure in the vicinity of a black hole shows dramatical transitions from a geometrically-thick hot accretion flow to a geometrically-thin disk, and the transition is observed at X-ray wavelengths (Remillard, McClintock, 2006; Done et al., 2007). However, how that X-ray transition occurs remains a major unsolved problem (Dunn et al., 2008). Here we report extensive optical photometry during the 2018 outburst of ASASSN-18ey (MAXI J1820$+$070), a black-hole binary at a distance of 3.06 kpc (Tucker et al., 2018; Torres et al., 2019) containing a black hole and a donor star of less than one solar mass. We found optical large-amplitude periodic variations similar to superhumps which are well observed in a subclass of white-dwarf binaries (Kato et al., 2009). In addition, the start of the stage transition of the optical variations was observed 5 days earlier than the X-ray transition. This is naturally explained on the basis of our knowledge regarding white dwarf binaries as follows: propagation of the eccentricity inward in the disk makes an increase of the accretion rate in the outer disk, resulting in huge mass accretion to the black hole. Moreover, we provide the dynamical estimate of the binary mass ratio by using the optical periodic variations for the first time in transient black-hole binaries. Abstract

IW And stars are a recently recognized group of dwarf novae which are characterized by a repeated sequence of brightening from a standstill-like phase with damping oscillations followed by a deep dip. Kimura et al. (2019) recently proposed a model based on thermal-viscous disk instability in a tilted disk to reproduce the IW And-type characteristics. IM Eri experienced the IW And-type phase in 2018 and we recorded three cycles of the (damping) oscillation phase terminated by brightening. We identified two periods during the IW And-type state: 4-5 d small-amplitude (often damping) oscillations and a 34-43 d long cycle. This behavior is typical for an IW And-type star. The object gradually brightened within the long cycle before the next brightening which terminated the (damping) oscillation phase. This observation agrees with the increasing disk mass during the long cycle predicted by a model of thermal-viscous disk instability in a tilted disk (Kimura et al. 2019). Abstract

We present the result of a multi-longitude campaign on the photometric study of the dwarf nova ASASSN-18fk during its superoutburst in 2018. It was observed with 18 telescopes at 15 sites during ~70 nights within a three-month interval. Observations covered the main outburst, six rebrightenings and 50-d decline to a near-quiescent state. We identify ASASSN-18fk as WZ Sge-type dwarf nova with multiple rebrightenings and show the evolution of the 0.06-d superhump period over all stages of the superoutburst. A strong 22-min brightness modulation that superimposed on superhumps is found during rebrightenings and decline. Some evidence of this modulation in a form of a sideband signal is detected during the very onset of the outburst. We interpret the 22-min modulation as a spin period of the white dwarf and suggest that ASASSN-18fk is a good candidate for a superhumping intermediate polar., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Abstract Upright computed tomography (CT) provides physiologically relevant images of daily life postures (sitting and standing). The volume of the human airway in sitting or standing positions remains unclear, and no clinical study to date has compared the inspiratory and expiratory airway volumes and luminal areas among standing, sitting, and supine positions. In this prospective study, 100 asymptomatic volunteers underwent both upright (sitting and standing positions) and conventional (supine position) CT during inspiration and expiration breath-holds and the pulmonary function test (PFT) within 2 h of CT. We compared the inspiratory/expiratory airway volumes and luminal areas on CT among the three positions and evaluated the correlation between airway volumes in each position on CT and PFT measurements. Abstract Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a peroxisomal disorder characterized by white matter degeneration caused by adenosine triphosphate‐binding cassette subfamily D member 1 (ABCD1) gene mutations, which lead to an accumulation of very‐long‐chain fatty acids (VLCFA). Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the most effective treatment; however, the ratio of donor‐to‐recipient cells required to prevent the progression of demyelination is unclear. The proband was diagnosed with the childhood cerebral form of ALD at 5 years of age based on the clinical phenotype, elevated plasma VLCFA levels, and pathogenic ABCD1 mutation c.293C>T (p.Ser98Leu). Soon after the diagnosis, he became bedridden. At 1 year of age, his younger brother was found to carry the same ABCD1 mutation; despite being asymptomatic, at 1 year and 9 months, head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed high‐signal‐intensity lesions in the cerebral white matter. Abstract Although the development of autoimmune disorders is recognized in drug‐induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS), the serial change of B‐cell activity has not been well‐addressed. Herein, the serum levels of IL‐6, IL‐10, B‐cell activating factor of the tumor necrosis factor family (BAFF), and a proliferation‐inducing ligand (APRIL) in three DIHS patients were tracked over time. While IL‐6 and IL‐10 tended to be elevated according to the disease activity, BAFF and APRIL increased during the improved phase. Our results imply that the continuous activation of B cells may be involved in the prolonged disease activity of DIHS and the development of autoimmune disorders.

Abstract

We report a case of a girl with inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder, which was detected by ultrasonographic screening based on the findings of a school medical checkup. The case was an 11-year-old girl. She was diagnosed as having occult hematuria and proteinuria by a school medical checkup. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a high echoic lesion protruding into the bladder. Cystoscopic findings showed a thumb fingertip-sized papillary pedunculated tumor located at the trigone in the bladder. Transurethral resection was performed and pathological examination rendered the diagnosis of inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder. Eight cases of bladder inverted papilloma in children have been reported including our case. This is the first case detected asymptomatically based on a school medical checkup. We believe that ultrasound screening of the urinary tract should be considered when treating patients with positive occult hematuria, such as in a school medical checkup.

Abstract

We recently reported that the terahertz (THz)-wave characteristics of pottery bodies varied significantly with firing temperature. This suggested the feasibility of conducting nondestructive inspection of the sinterability and manufacturing-process management of ceramics by THz-wave analysis. However, it is not clear why the THz-wave characteristics of ceramics change with firing temperature. In this study, we evaluated the THz-wave transmission properties of low-temperature-sintered porcelain bodies fired at various temperatures using THz time-domain spectroscopy and investigated the relationship between the crystal phase and microstructure. We found that the THz-wave transmittance increased with the dehydration of kaolinite and decreased with the formation of mullite and glass phases in the body. Also, as the firing temperature increased, the THz-wave transmittance of these bodies was affected by scattering due to the formation of pores. Additionally, the refractive index in the THz range showed a good correlation with the bulk density. We established that the firing-temperature dependence of the refractive index in the THz range was related to the crystal phase and microstructure.

Abstract

Abstract Predicting clinical outcomes can be difficult, particularly for life‐threatening events with a low incidence that require numerous clinical cases. Our aim was to develop and validate novel algorithms to identify major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) from claims databases. We developed algorithms based on the data available in the claims database International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD‐10), drug prescriptions, and medical procedures. We also employed data from the claims database of Jichi Medical University Hospital, Japan, for the period between October 2012 and September 2014. In total, we randomly extracted 100 potential acute myocardial infarction cases and 200 potential stroke cases (ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke were analyzed separately) based on ICD‐10 diagnosis. An independent committee reviewed the corresponding clinical data to provide definitive diagnoses for the extracted cases. We then assessed the algorithms’ accuracy using positive predictive values (PPVs) and apparent sensitivities. The PPVs of acute myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and hemorrhagic stroke were low only by diagnosis (81.6% [95% CI 72.5–88.7]; 31.0% [95% CI 22.8–40.3]; and 45.5% [95% CI 34.1–57.2], respectively); however, the PPVs were elevated after adding the prescription and procedure data (87.0% [95% CI 78.3–93.1]; 44.4% [95% CI 32.7–56.6]; and 46.1% [95% CI 34.5–57.9], respectively). When we added event‐specific prescription and procedure data to the algorithms, the PPVs for each event increased to 70%–98%, with apparent sensitivities exceeding 50%. Algorithms that rely on ICD‐10 diagnosis in combination with data on specific drugs and medical procedures appear to be valid for identifying MACEs in Japanese claims databases.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and is caused by various abnormalities including the contractility of blood vessels. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), whose systemic blood pressure increases with aging, are a frequently used animal model for investigating essential hypertension and related complications in humans due to the damage of several organs. Human omentin-1 is an adipocytokine consisting of 313 amino acids. Serum omentin-1 levels decreased in hypertensive patients compared with normotensive controls. Furthermore, omentin-1 knockout mice showed elevated blood pressure and impaired endothelial vasodilation. Taken together, we hypothesized that adipocytokine, human omentin-1 may improve the hypertension and its complications including heart and renal failure in the aged SHR (65–68-weeks-old). SHR were subcutaneously administered with human omentin-1 (18 μg/kg/day, 2 weeks). Human omentin-1 had no effect on body weight, heart rate, and systolic blood pressure in SHR. The measurement of isometric contraction revealed that human omentin-1 had no influence on the enhanced vasocontractile or impaired vasodilator responses in the isolated thoracic aorta from SHR. On the other hand, human omentin-1 tended to improve left ventricular diastolic failure and renal failure in SHR. In summary, human omentin-1 tended to improve hypertensive complications (heart and renal failure), while it had no influence on the severe hypertension in the aged SHR. The further study of human omentin-1 may lead to the development of therapeutic agents for hypertensive complications.

Abstract

Soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) stimulator riociguat is a relatively novel therapeutic agent for pulmonary hypertension (PH) in human medicine. Riociguat induces endothelium-independent pulmonary artery (PA) relaxation by directly activating the sGC-cyclic guanosine-3′,5′-monophosphate (cGMP) pathway in muscle cells. Although riociguat may be effective in the treatment of dogs with refractory PH, basic studies on its clinical application in veterinary medicine are lacking. The present study aimed to explore the effects of riociguat on the contractility of an isolated canine PA and the hemodynamics of dogs with acute PH. In an isolated endothelium-denuded canine PA, the effects of riociguat on endothelin (ET)-1-induced contraction and cGMP levels were investigated using the Magnus method and ELISA, respectively. The effect of riociguat on the hemodynamics of the thromboxane A2 analog U46619-induced PH model dog was examined by invasive catheterization. Riociguat increased cGMP levels and reduced ET-1-induced contraction of the isolated PA. Riociguat inhibited the U46619-induced elevation of PA pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance and increased cardiac output, but it had no effect on basal systemic blood pressure. These results demonstrate for the first time that riociguat can inhibit the elevation of PA pressure through PA relaxation via an endothelium-independent increase in cGMP in dogs with PH.
