In this study, we investigated gaze-based interaction methods within a virtual reality game with a visual search task with 52 participants. We compared four different interaction techniques: Selection by dwell time or confirmation of selection by head orientation, nodding or smooth pursuit eye movements. We evaluated both subjective and objective performance metrics, including NASA-TLX for subjective task load as well as time to find the correct targets and points achieved for objective analysis. The results showed significant differences between the interaction methods in terms of NASA TLX dimensions, time to find the right targets, and overall performance scores, suggesting differential effectiveness of gaze-based approaches in improving intuitive system communication. Interestingly, the results revealed gender-specific differences, suggesting interesting implications for the design of gaze-based interaction paradigms that are optimized for different user needs and preferences. These findings could help to develop more customized and effective gaze interaction systems that can improve accessibility and user satisfaction.

Gaussian Processes face two primary challenges: constructing models for large datasets and selecting the optimal model. This master's thesis tackles these challenges in the low-dimensional case. We examine recent convergence results to identify models with optimal convergence rates and pinpoint essential parameters. Utilizing this model, we propose a Samplet-based approach to efficiently construct and train the Gaussian Processes, reducing the cubic computational complexity to a log-linear scale. This method facilitates optimal regression while maintaining efficient performance.

Ab initio techniques have revolutionized the way how theory can help practitioners to explore critical mechanisms and devise new strategies in discovering and designing materials. Yet, their application to electrochemical systems is still limited. A well known example how novel concepts can boost our ability to perform such studies is the introduction of temperature control into ab initio simulations. The analogous technique to model electrochemical systems -- potential control -- is just emerging. In this review, we critically discuss state-of-the-art approaches to describe electrified interfaces between a solid electrode and a liquid electrolyte in realistic environments. By exchanging energy, electronic charge and ions with their environment, electrochemical interfaces are thermodynamically open systems. In addition, on the time and length scales relevant for chemical reactions, large fluctuations of the electrostatic potential and field occur. We systematically discuss the key challenges in including these features in realistic ab initio simulations, as well as the available techniques and approaches to overcome them, in order to facilitate the development and use of these novel techniques to the wider community. These methodological developments provide researchers with a new level of realism to explore fundamental electrochemical mechanisms and reactions from first principles.

We propose an analytical thermodynamic model for describing defect phase transformations, which we term the statistical phase evaluation approach (SPEA). The SPEA model assumes a Boltzmann distribution of finite size phase fractions and calculates their statistical average. To benchmark the performance of the model, we apply it to construct binary surface phase diagrams of metal alloys. Two alloy systems are considered: a Mg surface with Ca substitutions and a Ni surface with Nb substitutions. To construct a firm basis against which the performance of the analytical model can be leveled, we first perform Monte Carlo (MC) simulations coupled with cluster expansion of density functional theory dataset. We then demonstrate the SPEA model to reproduce the MC results accurately. Specifically, it correctly predicts the surface order-disorder transitions as well as the coexistence of the 1/3 ordered phase and the disordered phase. Finally, we compare the SPEA method to the sublattice model commonly used in the CALPHAD approach to describe ordered and random solution phases and their transitions. The increasing demand for highly customized products, as well as flexible production lines, can be seen as trigger for the "fourth industrial revolution", referred to as "Industrie 4.0". Current systems usually rely on wire-line technologies to connect sensors and actuators. To enable a higher flexibility such as moving robots or drones, these connections need to be replaced by wireless technologies in the future. Furthermore, this facilitates the renewal of brownfield deployments to address Industrie 4.0 requirements. This paper proposes representative use cases, which have been examined in the German Tactile Internet 4.0 (TACNET 4.0) research project. In order to analyze these use cases, this paper identifies the main challenges and requirements of communication networks in Industrie 4.0 and discusses the applicability of 5th generation wireless communication systems (5G).

Melting properties are critical for designing novel materials, especially for discovering high-performance, high-melting refractory materials. Experimental measurements of these properties are extremely challenging due to their high melting temperatures. Complementary theoretical predictions are, therefore, indispensable. The conventional free energy approach using density functional theory (DFT) has been a gold standard for such purposes because of its high accuracy. However,it generally involves expensive thermodynamic integration using ab initio molecular dynamic simulations. The high computational cost makes high-throughput calculations infeasible. Here, we propose a highly efficient DFT-based method aided by a specially designed machine learning potential. As the machine learning potential can closely reproduce the ab initio phase space, even for multi-component alloys, the costly thermodynamic integration can be fully substituted with more efficient free energy perturbation calculations. The method achieves overall savings of computational resources by 80% compared to current alternatives. We apply the method to the high-entropy alloy TaVCrW and calculate its melting properties, including melting temperature, entropy and enthalpy of fusion, and volume change at the melting point. Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with chemically tailorable properties are potential building blocks for quantum computing, high-density magnetic memory, and spintronics.1 2 3,4 These applications require isolated or few molecules on substrates, but studies of SMMs have mainly focused on bulk crystals. Moreover, fabrication of SMM-based devices and electrical detection of the SMM magnetic state are still coveted milestones that have so far been achieved mainly for double-decker rare-earth phthalocyanines at temperatures below 1 K.5-8 Here we demonstrate electrical detection of magnetization switching for a modification of the archetypal SMM Mn12, up to 70 K, based on the supramolecular spin valve effect5 with graphene quantum dots9. Notably, the exchange interaction between the molecules and the graphene, as well as the dot-mediated intermolecular interaction, can be directly extracted from the electrical response, opening the way to an effective characterization of the quantum properties of different types of SMMs in a wide temperature range.

Zener ordering is a phenomenon that octahedral interstitial atoms such as carbon occupy the same sublattice inside bcc matrix such as iron. The original formulation relies on a mean field theory, which is still most in use today. We employ multiple methods, such as Molecular Dynamics, Metropolis Monte Carlo, Mean Field Theory with chemical interactions and finite temperature effects to show that the Zener ordering for iron carbon systems is governed by local chemical interactions and finite temperature effects and less of mean field nature as described originally by Zener.

Aqueous metal corrosion is a major economic concern in modern society. A phenomenon that has puzzled generations of scientists in this field is the so-called anomalous hydrogen evolution: the violent dissolution of magnesium under electron-rich (anodic) conditions, accompanied by strong hydrogen evolution, and a key mechanism hampering Mg technology. Experimental studies have indicated the presence of univalent Mg$^+$ in solution, but these findings have been largely ignored because they defy our common chemical understanding and evaded direct experimental observation. Using recent advances in the \emph{ab initio} description of solid-liquid electrochemical interfaces under controlled potential conditions, we described the full reaction path of Mg atom dissolution from a kinked Mg surface under anodic conditions. Our study reveals the formation of a solvated [Mg$^{2+}$(OH)$^-$]$^+$ ion complex, challenging the conventional assumption of Mg$^{2+}$ ion. This insight provides an intuitive explanation for the postulated presence of (coulombically) univalent Mg$^+$ ions and the absence of protective oxide/hydroxide layers normally formed under anodic/oxidizing conditions. The discovery of this unexpected and unconventional reaction mechanism is crucial for identifying new strategies for corrosion prevention and can be transferred to other metals.

The combined structural and electronic complexity of iron oxides poses many challenges to atomistic modeling. To leverage limitations in terms of the accessible length and time scales, one requires a physically justified interatomic potential which is accurate to correctly account for the complexity of iron-oxygen systems. Such a potential is not yet available in the literature. In this work, we propose a machine-learning potential based on the Atomic Cluster Expansion for modeling the iron-oxygen system, which explicitly accounts for magnetism. The introduction and regulation of loudness in broadcasting and streaming brought clear benefits to the audience, e.g., a level of uniformity across programs and channels. Yet, speech loudness is frequently reported as being too low in certain passages, which can hinder the full understanding and enjoyment of movies and TV programs. This paper proposes expanding the set of loudness-based measures typically used in the industry. We focus on speech loudness, and we show that, when clean speech is not available, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) can be used to isolate the speech signal and so to accurately estimate speech loudness, providing a more precise estimate compared to speech-gated loudness. Moreover, we define critical passages, i.e., passages in which speech is likely to be hard to understand. Critical passages are defined based on the local Speech Loudness Deviation (SLD) and the local Speech-to-Background Loudness Difference (SBLD), as SLD and SBLD significantly contribute to intelligibility and listening effort. In contrast to other more comprehensive measures of intelligibility and listening effort, SLD and SBLD can be straightforwardly measured, are intuitive, and, most importantly, can be easily controlled by adjusting the speech level in the mix or by enabling personalization at the user's end. We present a comprehensive and user-friendly framework built upon the pyiron integrated development environment (IDE), enabling researchers to perform the entire Machine Learning Potential (MLP) development cycle consisting of (i) creating systematic DFT databases, (ii) fitting the Density Functional Theory (DFT) data to empirical potentials or MLPs, and (iii) validating the potentials in a largely automatic approach. The power and performance of this framework are demonstrated for three conceptually very different classes of interatomic potentials: an empirical potential (embedded atom method - EAM), neural networks (high-dimensional neural network potentials - HDNNP) and expansions in basis sets (atomic cluster expansion - ACE). As an advanced example for validation and application, we show the computation of a binary composition-temperature phase diagram for Al-Li, a technologically important lightweight alloy system with applications in the aerospace industry.

Science is and always has been based on data, but the terms "data-centric" and the "4th paradigm of" materials research indicate a radical change in how information is retrieved, handled and research is performed. It signifies a transformative shift towards managing vast data collections, digital repositories, and innovative data analytics methods. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its subset Machine Learning (ML), has become pivotal in addressing all these challenges. This Roadmap on Data-Centric Materials Science explores fundamental concepts and methodologies, illustrating diverse applications in electronic-structure theory, soft matter theory, microstructure research, and experimental techniques like photoemission, atom probe tomography, and electron microscopy. While the roadmap delves into specific areas within the broad interdisciplinary field of materials science, the provided examples elucidate key concepts applicable to a wider range of topics. Field evaporation from ionic or covalently bonded materials often leads to the emission of molecular ions. The metastability of these molecular ions, particularly under the influence of the intense electrostatic field (1010 Vm-1), makes them prone to dissociation with or without an exchange of energy amongst them. These processes can affect the analytical performance of atom probe tomography (APT). For instance, neutral species formed through dissociation may not be detected at all or with a time of flight no longer related to their mass, causing their loss from the analysis. Here, we evaluated the changes in the measured composition of FeO, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 across a wide range of analysis conditions. Possible dissociation reactions are predicted by density-functional theory (DFT) calculations considering the spin states of the molecules. The energetically favoured reactions are traced on to the multi-hit ion correlation histograms, to confirm their existence within experiments, using an automated Python-based routine. The detected reactions are carefully analysed to reflect upon the influence of these neutrals from dissociation reactions on the performance of APT for analysing iron oxides.

We present an implementation of Triplet Excitation-Energy Transfer (TEET) couplings based on subsystem-based Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory (sTDDFT). TEET couplings are systematically investigated by comparing "exact" and approximate variants of sTDDFT. We demonstrate that, while sTDDFT utilizing explicit approximate Non-Additive Kinetic Energy (NAKE) density functionals is well-suited for describing Singlet Excitation-Energy Transfer (SEET) processes, it is inadequate for characterizing TEET. However, we show that Projection-based Embedding (PbE)-based sTDDFT addresses the challenges faced by NAKE-sTDDFT and emerges as a promising method for accurately describing electronic couplings in TEET processes. We also introduce the mixed PbE-/NAKE-embedding procedure to investigate TEET effects in solvated pairs of chromophores. This approach offers a good balance between accuracy and efficiency, enabling comprehensive studies of TEET processes in complex environments.

Purpose: In this work, we explore the potential and limitations of simulating gaze-contingent tunnel vision conditions using Virtual Reality (VR) with built-in eye tracking technology. This approach promises an easy and accessible way of expanding study populations and test groups for visual training, visual aids, or accessibility evaluations. However, it is crucial to assess the validity and reliability of simulating these types of visual impairments and evaluate the extend to which participants with simulated tunnel vision can represent real patients. Methods: Two age-matched participant groups were acquired: The first group (n=8 aged 20-60, average 49.1, sd 13.2) consisted of patients diagnosed with Retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The second group (n=8, aged 27-59, average 46.5, sd 10.8) consisted of visually healthy participants with simulated tunnel vision. Both groups carried out different visual tasks in a virtual environment for 30 minutes per day over the course of four weeks. Task performances as well as gaze characteristics were evaluated in both groups over the course of the study. Results: Using the "two one-sided tests for equivalence" method, the two groups were found to perform similar in all three visual tasks. Significant differences between groups were found in different aspects of their gaze behavior, though most of these aspects seem to converge over time. Conclusion: Our study evaluates the potential and limitations of using Virtual Reality technology to simulate the effects of tunnel vision within controlled virtual environments. We find that the simulation accurately represents performance of RP patients in the context of group averages, but fails to fully replicate effects on gaze behavior.

We present a simple and accurate GW implementation based on a combination of a Laplace transformation (LT) and other acceleration techniques used in post-SCF quantum chemistry, namely, natural auxiliary functions and the frozen-core approximation. The LT-GW approach combines three major benefits: (a) a small prefactor for the computational scaling, (b) easy integration into existing molecular GW implementations, and (c) significant performance improvements for a wide range of possible applications.
