Introduction: Some case series have suggested that psychotic features could occur even before the onset of motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Our aim was to investigate a possible association between psychotic symptoms and prodromal Parkinson's disease in a population-based cohort, the Hellenic Longitudinal Investigation of Aging and Diet study. Methods: This cross-sectional study included participants aged ≥65 years without dementia or PD. We defined psychotic symptoms as the presence of at least one new hallucinatory or delusional feature, assessed with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory scale and the Columbia University Scale for Psychopathology in Alzheimer's Disease, exhibited only at follow-up and not present at baseline visit. We calculated the probability of prodromal PD (pPD) for every participant, according to the 2019 International Parkinson and Movement Disorders Society research criteria for prodromal PD. Results: Participants who developed psychotic manifestations over a three-year follow up (20 of 914) had 1.3 times higher probability of pPD score (β [95%CI]: 1.3 [0.9-1.5], p=0.006) compared to non-psychotic subjects. Background: The prevalence and associated factors related to psychotic symptoms in older adults are understudied. The objectives were to assess the prevalence, incidence and factors associated with psychotic symptoms in a representative Greek sample of community living older adults. Methods: The sample includes n = 1,904 residents of the cities of Larissa and Maroussi in Greece participating in the Hellenic Longitudinal Investigation of Aging and Diet study with available data at baseline and n = 947 individuals at the 3-year follow-up. Past-month presence of delusions and hallucinations was assessed on the grounds of the 17 symptoms of the Columbia University Scale for Psychopathology in Alzheimer's Disease and 14 symptoms of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire. A comprehensive neuropsychological assessment for probable diagnosis of dementia and physical comorbidity was carried out by neurologists. Penalized logistic regression analyses were used to assess the socio-economic and clinical factors associated with psychotic symptoms. Results: Past-month prevalence of psychotic symptoms was 1.9% and 1.0% when excluding cases of dementia. The prevalence of any delusion and hallucination was 0.8% and 0.3% when excluding dementia. The incidence of psychotic symptoms without dementia was 1.3%. Recent widows and farmers/breeders/craftsmen, versus public servants/teachers/executives, had both six times the odds of experiencing psychotic symptoms without dementia. Hearing impairment and the number of health conditions also increased the odds while increased age was protective. Conclusion: Psychotic symptoms unrelated to dementia constitute a considerable mental health problem in old age. Paranoid delusions were the most prevalent. Due to the growing environmental pollution, methods are being sought to improve this situation. One of the main factors influencing this pollution is passenger vehicles. This paper will analyze a new approach to vehicles with in-wheel electric motors as well as the steering of all four wheels, which will increase the efficiency of the vehicles and at the same time the driving safety. Driving operation modes of vehicles as well as applications of 4-wheel steering (4WS) with steer-by-wire (SBW) system shall be analyzed. Specially, the steering geometry and the vehicle dynamics equations of this vehicle type will be reported. Finally, the proposed 4WS SBW control system will be presented and simulated with New European Driving cycle (NEDC).

Background/Aim: KRAS mutations are reported in 20-25% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and their prognostic role is unclear. We studied KRAS and EGFR genotyping in Greek NSCLC patients. Patients and Methods: KRAS and EGFR genotypes were centrally evaluated in 421 NSCLC patients (diagnosed September 1998 -June 2013) and associated with clinicopathological parameters. Outcome comparisons were performed in 288 patients receiving first line treatment. Results: Most patients were male (78.6%), >60 years old (63.9%), current smokers (51.1%), with adenocarcinoma histology (63.9%). EGFR and KRAS mutations were found in 10.7% and 16.6% of all histologies, respectively, and in 14.9% and 21.9% of adenocarcinomas. At 4.5 years median follow-up, KRAS status was an independent negative prognostic factor for overall survival (OS, p=0.016). KRAS mutations conferred 80% increased risk of death in patients receiving first-line treatment (p=0.002). Conclusion: The presence of KRAS mutations is an independent negative prognosticator among Greek NSCLC patients and an independent response predictor to first line treatment.

Manganese removal using a biological trickling filter was investigated. Manganese removal was found to be caused by both biological and chemical manganese oxidation. The extent of each oxidation type was assessed. The performance of the trickling filter was tested under both continuous and sequencing batch reactor operation. The effectiveness and throughput for each operational mode were determined as a function of retention time and the advantages of each operational mode were investigated. It was found that the continuous operational mode leads to higher percentage of manganese removal but lower throughput rates when compared with a sequencing batch reactor operation with the same feed concentration and retention time. A series of experiments was also performed in order to investigate the interactions between ammonia, iron and manganese removal when simultaneously present in a biological filter. For low ammonia concentrations there is no serious inhibition of manganese removal. For higher ammonia concentrations inhibition of manganese removal becomes substantial. The presence of iron affects both ammonia and manganese removal negatively, while ammonia and manganese do not significantly affect iron removal.

Background: BRCA1 (B), ERCC1 (E), RRM1 (R) and TYMS (T) mRNA expression has been extensively studied with respect to NSCLC patient outcome upon various chemotherapy agents. However, these markers have not been introduced into clinical practice yet. One of the reasons seems to be lack of a standard approach for the classification of the reported high/low mRNA expression. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic/predictive impact of B, E, R, T in routinely-treated NSCLC patients by taking into account the expression of these genes in the normal lung parenchyma. Methods: B, E, R, T mRNA expression was examined in 276 NSCLC samples (real-time PCR). The normal range of B, E, R, T transcript levels was first determined in matched tumor - normal pairs and then applied to the entire tumor series. Four main chemotherapy categories were examined: taxanes-without-platinum (Tax); platinum-without-taxanes (Plat); taxanes/platinum doublets (Tax/Plat); and, all-other combinations. Results: In comparison to remotely located normal lung parenchyma, B, E, R, T mRNA expression was generally increased in matched tumors, as well as in the entire tumor series. Therefore, tumors were classified as expressing normal or aberrant B, E, R, T mRNA. In general, no marker was associated with overall and progression free survival (OS, PFS). Upon multivariate analysis, aberrant intratumoral TYMS predicted for shorter PFS than normal TYMS in 1st line chemo-naive treated patients (p = 0.012). In the same setting, specific interactions were observed for aberrant TYMS with Plat and Tax/Plat (p = 0.003 and p = 0.006, respectively). Corresponding patients had longer PFS in comparison to those treated with Tax (Plat: HR = 0.234, 95% CI: 0.108-0.506, Wald’s p < 0.0001; Tax/Plat: HR = 0.242, 95% CI: 0.131-0.447, Wald’s p < 0.0001). Similar results were obtained for PFS in 1st line chemo-naive and (neo) adjuvant pre-treated patients. Adenocarcinoma, early disease stage, and treatment with Tax/Plat doublets independently predicted for prolonged OS in patients who received only one line of treatment (adjuvant or 1st line). Conclusion: Classifying intratumoral B, E, R, T mRNA expression in comparison to normal lung may facilitate standardization of these parameters for prospective studies. With this approach, NSCLC patients with aberrant intratumoral TYMS expression will probably fare better with platinum-based treatments.
