This study involves translating, cross-culturally adapting, and validating the "Literary Response Questionnaire" (LRQ) for 413 Spanish adolescents. It explores the evolution of literary education in Spain and its alignment with the Reading Responses paradigm. The LRQ, adapted across various locations, is validated in Spanish through Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The research analyzes reading responses in dimensions like Leisure Escape, Insight, Empathy, Story-driven Reading, Concern with Author, Imagery Vividness, and Rejecting Literary Values. Findings reveal widespread indifference and rejection toward literary reading among the adolescents, along with a clear disapproval of the historicist-authorial approach to literary education. Significant variations were identified based on students' gender, enrollment in a bilingual program, and notably, the number of books read per year. This underscores the significance of introducing literary reading practices in secondary education that align with the leisure preferences of adolescents, encouraging personal and experiential engagement with texts. This could materialize in the classroom the shift from a historicist to a reader-centered approach suggested by the current Spanish curriculum.

This study explores the factors contributing to the imbalance between fiction and nonfiction materials in primary school classrooms, with a specific emphasis on the perspectives of prospective teachers. Employing a qualitative research approach, the investigation involved 30 student teachers who had completed the Children's Literature course at a Spanish university. Semi-structured interviews, with questions validated by expert judges, were utilized to gather responses, which were subsequently transcribed and analyzed through coding, following a categorical framework refined post-response analysis. The primary findings indicate a restricted exposure to nonfiction picturebooks in familial and educational settings. Despite positive emotional responses from trainee teachers, the study reveals an inadequacy in their training, hindering the development of a comprehensive understanding and the reinforcement of self-efficacy for integrating nonfiction materials into future teaching practices. Furthermore, the research underscores a disparity between the perceived significance of nonfiction picturebooks for enhancing children's multimodal reading and the inclination of trainee teachers to prioritize fiction due to a lack of confidence and previous exposure. As a result, the study proposes a reassessment of teacher training programs, recommending a more thorough focus on nonfiction materials and continuous professional development to address the disparity between beliefs and actual classroom practices.

Outdoor education fosters student well-being, development and learning. However, many schools restrict outdoor experience to their own playground, and to times considered recess. This case study, which examined student and teacher perceptions about the outdoor experience on traditional playgrounds, was conducted in an urban school in the Basque Country with an asphalt playground whose only resources were related to sports. We conducted five focal studies with 40 students, and administered a questionnaire to 78 teachers in Primary and Secondary Education. The results obtained made clear the dissatisfaction of both students and teachers with the use of the playground and with the opportunities it offered. However, they also identified areas for improvement and suggested future lines of work. It is essential to promote a dynamic of reflection on outdoor spaces that includes student participation as well as training teachers and raising their awareness.

The aim of this exploratory sequential mixed methods study was to examine the beliefs of Early Childhood Education teachers regarding the enculturation process of children. Eleven 2-year-old classroom teachers (M[subscript age]= 40.64; DT = 7.43; 81.81% female) participated in the qualitative phase, and 256 teachers (M[subscript age] = 42.25; DT = 9.78; 90.3% female) participated in the quantitative one. Based on interviews, four main themes were identified: Routines and habits, Values, Models of behavior, and Knowledge. Based on the qualitative results, an instrument was created to measure the teachers' beliefs regarding enculturation in Early Childhood Education and Care. High convergence was obtained between the qualitative and quantitative results, supporting the idea that teachers are active agents of enculturation and social role models for children. We conclude that enculturation should be a curricular objective and that it deserves a greater presence in professional development programs for Early Childhood Education teachers.

Abstract Aging involves the deterioration of organismal function, leading to the emergence of multiple pathologies. Environmental stimuli, including lifestyle, can influence the trajectory of this process and may be used as tools in the pursuit of healthy aging. To evaluate the role of epigenetic mechanisms in this context, we have generated bulk tissue and single cell multi-omic maps of the male mouse dorsal hippocampus in young and old animals exposed to environmental stimulation in the form of enriched environments. We present a molecular atlas of the aging process, highlighting two distinct axes, related to inflammation and to the dysregulation of mRNA metabolism, at the functional RNA and protein level. Additionally, we report the alteration of heterochromatin domains, including the loss of bivalent chromatin and the uncovering of a heterochromatin-switch phenomenon whereby constitutive heterochromatin loss is partially mitigated through gains in facultative heterochromatin. Notably, we observed the multi-omic reversal of a great number of aging-associated alterations in the context of environmental enrichment, which was particularly linked to glial and oligodendrocyte pathways. In conclusion, our work describes the epigenomic landscape of environmental stimulation in the context of aging and reveals how lifestyle intervention can lead to the multi-layered reversal of aging-associated decline.

Abstract: Introduction: Psychological treatments are becoming an increasingly important component of medical healthcare, as a growing number of people seek treatment for a wide range of mental health problems. While these treatments are known to be effective, much remains to be understood about their mechanisms and reasons for effectiveness. The study of statistical mediators is crucial in psychological research, as it is fundamental to understanding how psychological factors influence health, well-being, and human behavior, and thus to designing effective psychological interventions. Aim: This study investigates the role of resilience as a treatment mediator in PROCARE+, a brief transdiagnostic, personalized protocol for the selective prevention of emotional disorders in adolescents. This approach has proven effective for young people at risk of developing emotional issues. Method: We used simple mediation models in a sample of 153 adolescents to assess the impact of interventions on resilience. Outcome variables included self-reported and parent-reported emotional risk, mood, anxiety symptoms, and quality of life. Discussion: The results of this study provide valuable information on how PROCARE+ works and how to improve its effectiveness, pointing to resilience as a key mediator in reducing the risk of developing emotional disorders and improving quality of life.

Summary: Background: Among people living with HIV-1 (PHIV), immunological non-responders (INR) experience incomplete immune recovery despite suppressive antiretroviral treatment (ART), facing more severe non-AIDS events than immunological responders (IR) due to higher chronic immune activation and inflammation (cIA/I). We analyzed the HIV-1 reservoir and immunometabolism in monocytes as a source of cIA/I. Methods: Cross-sectional study in which 110 participants were enrolled: 25 treatment-naïve; 35 INR; 40 IR; and 10 healthy controls. Cell-associated HIV-1-DNA (HIV-DNA) and -RNA (HIV-RNA) were measured in FACS-isolated monocytes using digital droplet PCR. Intact, 5′ deleted, and 3′ deleted proviruses were quantified by the intact proviral DNA assay. Systemic inflammation, monocyte immunophenotype, and immunometabolism were characterized by immunoassays, flow cytometry, and real-time cellular bioenergetics measurements, respectively. Findings: Monocytes from INR harbor higher HIV-RNA and HIV-DNA levels than IR. HIV-RNA was found in 14/21 treatment-naïve [2512 copies/106 TBP (331–4666)], 17/33 INR [240 (148–589)], and 15/28 IR [144 (15–309)], correlating directly with sCD163, IP-10, GLUT1high cells and glucose uptake, and inversely with the CD4+/CD8+ ratio. HIV-DNA was identified in all participants with detectable HIV-RNA, with intact provirus in 9/12 treatment-naïve [13 copies/106 monocytes (7–44)], 8/14 INR [46 (18–67)], and 9/13 IR [9 (7–24)]. INR presented glucose metabolism alterations and mitochondrial impairment; decreased coupling efficiency and BHI, and increased mitochondrial dysfunction inversely correlating with the CD4+/CD8+ ratio. Interpretation: HIV-RNA, more than HIV-DNA, in monocytes and their altered metabolism are factors associated with the higher cIA/I that characterize INR. Despite effective antiretroviral therapy (ART), 15-30% of people with HIV experience poor CD4+ T-cell recovery, termed immunologic non-responders (INR). This study aims to evaluate whether pre-ART plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interferon gamma-induced protein-10 (IP-10), macrophage inflammatory protein-1-β (MIP-1β), and/or pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) could predict subsequent immunologic recovery. Seventy-four participants were enrolled and classified as INR and immunologic responders (IR) based on CD4+/CD8+ ratio increase over 24 months after starting ART. The results showed no significant differences in cytokine levels between INR and IR. Therefore, IL-6, IP-10, MIP-1β, and PTX-3 were unsuitable as predictive markers of poor immune recovery.

Objetivo. Evaluar el Programa BIZI, un programa de formación de guardianes o gatekeepers (GTK, por su sigla en inglés) en español y con un formato novedoso en línea, autocompletado, breve y de acceso libre desarrollado como parte de la estrategia de prevención de suicidio en Euskadi (España) para mejorar la prevención del suicidio desde entornos comunitarios. Métodos. Un grupo multicomponente de expertos creó el programa y probó su usabilidad en una fase preliminar. Para la evaluación se utilizó un diseño de grupo único y medidas repetidas (antes, posinmediato y a los tres meses). Se evaluó su impacto en las competencias GTK básicas con cuestionarios en línea, así como la adherencia a los contenidos y satisfacción. Se incluyeron en el estudio agentes comunitarios (educadores y trabajadores sociales, ente otros) que respondieron a una invitación enviada por los coordinadores comarcales de salud pública. Resultados. En total, 728 personas accedieron a la formación, y 86% la finalizó. Completaron la evaluación 569 personas (81,2% eran mujeres, la edad media fue de 41,4 años). Las competencias GTK básicas de actitud, autoeficacia y conocimiento mejoraron de manera significativa, y la mejora se mantuvo ≥ 3 meses en una submuestra (P = 0,0001). Conclusiones. Los resultados son prometedores y sugieren la utilidad de BIZI para mejorar la capacidad y la disposición de agentes comunitarios para identificar a personas en riesgo y derivarlos a recursos especializados. Su formato novedoso le confiere ventajas importantes respecto de otros formatos GTK más habituales, y facilita su difusión en entornos de escasos recursos. Es el primer programa de este tipo cuya eficacia ha sido demostrada y también el primero disponible en español.

En el Estrato Aurora del nivel TD6 del yacimiento pleistoceno de Gran Dolina (Trinchera del Ferrocarril, Sierra de Atapuerca, Burgos) se han obtenido más de cien restos fósiles de homininos de la especie Homo antecessor, que pertenecen a un mínimo (NMI) de nueve individuos. En este trabajo realizamos la determinación del NMI y de la edad de muerte de los individuos, empleando datos observados en los restos de mandíbula, maxilar y dientes. El análisis tafonómico previo concluyó que el origen de la acumulación de los restos de homininos fue un acto puntual o recurrente de canibalismo de tipo «gastronómico ». Nuestro análisis revela que la mayor parte de los individuos (n = 7) son inmaduros, de entre tres y trece años, mientras que dos son adultos jóvenes, de entre quince y dieciocho años. En función de esta peculiar distribución de mortalidad se discuten hipótesis alternativas sobre los escenarios en los que los homininos fueron aprehendidos y las implicaciones que ello conlleva para el comportamiento de las poblaciones del Pleistoceno inferior.

Objectives: we analyzed the characteristics of patients with gastric tumors diagnosed with multiple malignant primary neoplasm (MMPN) in the Health District of León. Material and methods: using the information in the Tumor Registry at León Hospital patients selected were those with gastric neoplasms diagnosed between 1993 and 2002. A follow-up was performed until December 31, 2004, and the characteristics of patients diagnosed with a second neoplasm were analyzed. Results: MMPN prevalence was 1,96%; 56% of patients had a history of cancer in first-degree relatives. The most frequent second neoplasms were digestive (26%) and urologic (21%); 87% of patients were diagnosed with a second neoplasm within the first two years. No significative differences in survival were observed among patients with synchronous or metachronous MMPN. Conclusions: MMPN in patients with gastric neoplasms is a relevant problem. While external carcinogenic agents could act as promoters in the development of second neoplasms, these patients seem to have a genetic background favoring the development of MMPN. Secondary prevention is the best measure to avoid MMPN development.Objetivos: analizar las características de los pacientes con tumores gástricos diagnosticados de una neoplasia primaria maligna múltiple (NPMM) en el área sanitaria de León. Pacientes y método: utilizando los datos del Registro de Tumores del Hospital de León se han seleccionado aquellos pacientes con tumores gástricos diagnosticados entre 1993 y 2002. Se realizó un seguimiento hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2004 analizando las características de los pacientes diagnosticados de una segunda neoplasia durante el periodo de seguimiento. Resultados: la prevalencia de NPMM fue del 1,96%. El 56% de los pacientes tenían antecedentes oncológicos en familiares de primer grado. Las segundas neoplasias más frecuentes fueron las digestivas (26%) y las urológicas (21%). El 87% de los pacientes fueron diagnosticados del segundo tumor en los primeros dos años. No se observaron diferencias respecto a la supervivencia entre los pacientes con NPMM sincrónicas y metacrónicas. Conclusiones: las NPMM en los pacientes con cáncer gástrico son un problema relevante. Aunque los agentes carcinógenos externos puedan actuar como promotores en el desarrollo de una segunda neoplasia, en estos pacientes parece existir una base genética que favorece el desarrollo del una NPMM. La prevención secundaria es la mejor medida para evitar el desarrollo de una NPMM.

Developing student critical thinking skills is a core purpose of higher education, and requires the cognitive and disposition components of critical thinking to be fostered. The present study aims to examine the relationship between disposition towards critical thinking and engagement in higher education students. Participants were 836 students from two universities in Spain. Results showed a direct and positive relationship between student critical thinking disposition and several aspects of student engagement, such as reflective learning and participation in high-impact practices. These results could inform general pedagogical practices within the higher education curriculum so as to foster critical thinking disposition among future graduates.

The work of the French illustrator and writer Gilles Bachelet has been recognised through numerous awards, but he is not yet sufficiently well known in the critical community. In this article, the multilevel humour that constructs his work is studied, both from an iconic and a textual perspective, as well as the situational humour and the humour of characters that emerge through metafiction, self-referentiality and heteroreferentiality. For this purpose, the theories of humour in children's literature and the classifications of types of humour offered by different researchers are used as a starting point, and a mixed model of analysis applicable to Bachelet's work as a whole is proposed. In addition, the analysis of each of the picturebooks is based on the most recent studies on the components of the current picturebook, such as its narrative construction, type of reading, characteristics and organisation of text and image. In this way, the postmodern features of Gilles Bachelet's works, which make him a crossover author, are revealed.

ObjectiveTo compare the long-term effects on immune parameters, inflammation, and HIV-1 reservoir after switching to a two-drug (2DR) versus maintaining an integrase inhibitor (InSTI)-based three-drug regimen (3DR).MethodsCross-sectional study in which HIV-1 treatment-naïve people started and maintained an InSTI-based 3DR or, at different times, switched to 2DR (dolutegravir or darunavir/cobicistat + lamivudine). CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell activation and exhaustion, plasma concentrations of hs-CRP, D-dimer, P-selectin, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IP-10, sTNFR-I/II, MIP-1α/β, I-FABP, LBP, sCD14, sCD163, MCP-1, and cellular-associated HIV-1-DNA and -RNA were quantified by flow cytometry, different immunoassays, and droplet digital PCR, respectively. The U de Mann-Whitney test evaluated differences between 3DR and 2DR. Immune recovery was evaluated using a general linear model for repeated measures adjusted for different co-variables.ResultsFifty participants per group were included. The median time on 3DR was 82 months for the 3DR group and 30 months for the 2DR group, after which it switched to 2DR for a median of 57 months. We did not find differences between both groups in any of the parameters analyzed. Specifically, some values in 3DR and 2DR were hs-CRP, 0.92 mg/L (0.45–2.23) vs. 1.23 (0.61–2.38); D-dimer, 190.0 µg/L (150.0–370.0) vs. 190.0 (150.0–397.5); IL-6, 2.8 pg/mL (1.3–5.3) vs. 3.2 (2.1–4.7); sCD14, 4.5 ng/mL (3.3–6.2) vs. 5.0 (3.6–6.1), respectively, all p ≥ 0.399.ConclusionIn the long term, switching to 2DR does not negatively affect immunologic parameters, inflammatory markers, or HIV-1 reservoir.Clinical trial registrationidentifier NCT04076423.

Mediante este estudio de caso se pretende explorar las creencias, representaciones y saberes de docentes de Educación Secundaria, considerados como expertos, sobre la lectura de los clásicos, uno de los asuntos más debatidos en la didáctica de la literatura, en virtud de los bajos índices de lectura de estas obras que presentan los adolescentes. Para ello, se ha entrevistado individualmente a seis profesores con más de diez años de experiencia, filólogos y con una tesis doctoral. Asimismo, se llevó a cabo un grupo de discusión. Para analizar los datos, se realizó una codificación, con el apoyo del software Nvivo, tanto de las entrevistas como del grupo de discusión, que revirtió en dos sistemas de categorías. Posteriormente, esta información se analizó desde un prisma interpretativo-hermenéutico. Los resultados muestran que la lectura de los clásicos es problemática para los docentes, pues, en la mayoría de los casos, existe un contraste entre lo que desean y lo que se sienten obligados a hacer por la oposición que se da entre sus autocreencias y sus heterocreencias.

Durante el confinamiento decretado en el período de alarma sanitaria provocada por la COVID-19, en España se suspendieron todas las actividades educativas de carácter presencial forzando la utilización de vías de trabajo telemático. El objetivo de este estudio consistió en examinar la determinación y la autoeficacia creativa en estudiantes que tuvieron que afrontar los retos académicos de sus itinerarios educativos en dicho contexto. En el estudio participaron 1380 alumnos y alumnas pertenecientes a 18 centros educativos de bachillerato (n = 853), formación profesional (n = 243) y universidad (n = 284). El rango de edad osciló entre los 15 y los 51 años (M de edad = 18.34, DT = 4.37). El 58.70% eran mujeres y el 41.30% hombres. Los resultados pusieron de manifiesto que las y los estudiantes de formación profesional y de universidad mostraron un incremento de la consistencia de interés. Sin embargo, no se encontraron diferencias en el alumnado de bachillerato. En contra de lo esperado, no se hallaron diferencias en la perseverancia del esfuerzo y en la autoeficacia creativa en ninguno de los niveles educativos, aunque sí se encontraron diferencias de género en las variables objeto de estudio. Se concluye que los y las estudiantes, como mecanismo adaptativo, principalmente desarrollaron el factor metacognitivo de consistencia de interés para hacer frente a un reto académico que les exigió altas dosis de autorregulación, motivación y trabajo autónomo durante un período prolongado de tiempo. Estos resultados apoyan los hallazgos de otros estudios en los que se ha observado que, en situaciones de adversidad, la determinación es útil para afrontar desafíos y mantener el nivel de esfuerzo suficiente para lograr los objetivos planteados.

Background:. The paradigm of healthcare has evolved toward patient-centered approaches, where shared decision-making (SDM) plays a pivotal role. This study aimed to explore the implementation of SDM during breast cancer reconstruction consultations and assess its impact on patient satisfaction and the decision-making process as a whole. Methods:. A total of 102 female patients undergoing breast reconstruction were included in a multidisciplinary breast pathology unit. A streamlined SDM model involving choice introduction, option description, and preference exploration was implemented. A validated Spanish version of the nine-item Shared Decision Making Questionnaire was used alongside a complementary questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out using electronic data capture software. Results:. The nine-item Shared Decision Making Questionnaire results indicate strong agreement in presenting various options and explaining their advantages and disadvantages. Patients were less confident about their participation in decision-making. The Complementary Shared Decision Making Questionnaire highlighted high satisfaction with interview times and language clarity but areas for improvement in consultation space and therapeutic choice participation. Conclusions:. Integrating SDM into breast reconstruction consultations empowers patients in the decision-making process and enhances satisfaction. Decision aids prove effective in this context, facilitating patients’ comprehension and reducing decisional conflict. There are areas for improvement within the SDM strategy, and they are detectable through scales. Although challenges in information transmission and patient involvement persist, adopting an SDM model has potential benefits that warrant further investigation.

Human inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and canine inflammatory mammary cancer (IMC) are highly aggressive neoplastic diseases that share numerous characteristics. In IBC and IMC, chemotherapy produces a limited pathological response and anti-androgen therapies have been of interest for breast cancer treatment. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the effect of a therapy based on bicalutamide, a non-steroidal anti-androgen, with doxorubicin and docetaxel chemotherapy on cell proliferation, migration, tumor growth, and steroid-hormone secretion. An IMC-TN cell line, IPC-366, and an IBC-TN cell line, SUM149, were used. In vitro assays revealed that SUM149 exhibited greater sensitivity, reducing cell viability and migration with all tested drugs. In contrast, IPC-366 exhibited only significant in vitro reductions with docetaxel as a single agent or in different combinations. Decreased estrogen levels reduced in vitro tumor growth in both IMC and IBC. Curiously, doxorubicin resulted in low efficacy, especially in IMC. In addition, all drugs reduced the tumor volume in IBC and IMC by increasing intratumoral testosterone (T) levels, which have been related with reduced tumor progression. In conclusion, the addition of bicalutamide to doxorubicin and docetaxel combinations may represent a potential treatment for IMC and IBC.

Algae are a booming resource in the food industry due to their several health benefits. This study assesses the impact of the combined use of selected macro- and microalgae to improve the nutritional profile and the labeling of a vegetable cream by the introduction of nutrition and health claims. As macroalgae, two Ascophyllum nodosum L., one natural (An) and one smoked (AnS), were selected for their high iodine concentration and flavor notes. A new strain of Chlorella vulgaris, golden (CvG), was selected as the microalgae, which is rich in proteins and has a neutral sensorial profile (golden color and mild flavor). In this study, two vegetable creams were compared. The control (CTRL) versus one enriched with a mixture of macroalgae and microalgae (CV-AN). Sensory, physicochemical, and functional properties of both vegetable creams were evaluated. The bioactivity assessed was the effect of iodine as a health claim and antioxidant and antihypertensive properties. CV-AN vegetable cream showed significantly higher values (p < 0.05) for protein content, iodine value, and antioxidant activity, with no significant differences (p > 0.05) in antihypertensive activity or sensory panel. The incorporation of these algae resulted in a vegetable cream with a better nutritional profile and sensory acceptability comparable to the control, offering protein and iodine source claims in the labeling.
