Energetic and optical properties of plasmonic nanocrystals strongly depend on their sizes, shapes, and composition. Whereas using plasmonic nanoparticles in biotesting has become routine, applications of plasmonics in energy are still early in development. Here, we investigate hot electron (HE) generation and related electromagnetic effects in both mono- and bi-metallic nanorods (NRs) and focus on one promising type of bi-metallic nanocrystals - core-shell Au-Ag nanorods. The spectra of the NRs are broadband, highly tunable with their geometry, and have few plasmon resonances. In this work, we provide a new quantum formalism describing the HE generation in bi-metallic nanostructures. Interestingly, we observe that the HE generation rate at the UV plasmon resonance of Au-Ag NRs appears to be very high. These HEs are highly energetic and suitable for carbon-fuel reactions. Simultaneously, the HE generation at the longitudinal plasmon (L-plasmon) peaks, which can be tuned from the yellow to near-IR, depends on the near-field and electromagnetic Mie effects, limiting the HE efficiencies for the long and large NRs. These properties of the L-plasmon relate to all kinds of NRs (Au, Ag, and Au-Ag). We also consider the generation of the interband d-holes in Au and Ag, since the involvement of the d-band is crucial for the energetic properties of UV plasmons. The proposed formalism is an important development for the description of bi-metallic (or tri-metallic, or more complex) nanostructures, and it paves the way to the efficient application of the plasmonic HEs and hot holes in sensing, nanotechnology, photocatalysis, and electrophotochemistry.

In this work, we use artificial neural networks (ANNs) to recognize the material composition, sizes of nanoparticles and their concentrations in different media with high accuracy, solely from the absorbance spectrum of a macroscopic sample. We construct ANNs operating in the following two schemes. The first scheme is designed to recognize the dimensions and refractive indices of dielectric scatterers in mixed ensembles. The second ANN model simultaneously recognizes the dimensions of gold nanospheres in a mixture and the refractive index of a matrix. A challenge in the first scheme arises at and near the invisibility point, i.e., when the refractive index of nanoparticles is close to that of the medium. Of course, particle recognition in this regime faces fundamental physical limitations. However, such recognition near the invisibility point is possible, and our study reveals its unique properties. Interestingly, the recognition process for the refractive index in the vicinity of the invisibility point shows very small errors. In contrast, the errors for the recognition of the radius grow strongly near this point. Another regime with limited recognition occurs when the extinction spectra are not unique and can correspond to different realizations of nanoparticle mixtures. Regarding multi-particle or polydisperse solutions, the ML-based models should in such cases be rationally restricted to maintain the feasibility of the recognition process. Overall, the recognition schemes proposed and investigated by us can find their applications in the field of sensing.

The creatine (Cr)/creatine kinase (CK) system plays a crucial role in cellular energy metabolism, glucose control, and the immune response. This study aimed to investigate this system in the peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) of Armenians with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who received insulin therapy. A total of 270 Armenian participants were enrolled in the study and were divided into two age groups: Group I - included children and preadolescents; and Group II - included adolescents and young adults. Within each group, the participants were further categorized based on sex and disease duration: Recent-onset T1D (RO-T1D), and Long-term T1D (LT-T1D). A group of healthy individuals that were matched for age and sex served as controls. The glycemic control (GC) was assessed using the glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test. In girls of Group I with LT-T1D, both the Cr levels and CK activity were significantly reduced in both the cytoplasm and mitochondria of the PBL, despite having a good GC. In contrast, age-matched boys showed a relatively stable Cr metabolism. Beginning at puberty, only girls with LT-T1D and a poor GC showed decreased Cr levels and a reduced CK activity, which was most pronounced in the mitochondria. In boys of Group II, the cytoplasmic Cr levels decreased by half, regardless of the GC or disease duration, while the mitochondrial Cr levels decreased by 55% only in boys with LT-T1D and a poor GC. Their CK activity decreased by 80% in both cellular compartments, regardless of the GC and duration of diabetes. Notably, changes in the plasma were less specific. Our findings indicate age- and sex-dependent changes in Cr metabolism in the cytoplasm and mitochondria of PBL in Armenians with T1D, which are influenced by the glycemic status and the disease duration. Further extensive studies in this area may provide insights into potential strategies to control metabolism in T1D to counteract autoimmunity and immune dysregulation, and may also serve as a basis for the development of targeted therapeutic interventions.

BackgroundAfrican American smokers have 2.5 times higher risk for stroke compared with nonsmokers (higher than other races). About 50% of the African American population carry 1 or 2 genetic variants (G1 and G2; rare in other races) of the apolipoprotein L1 gene (APOL1). Studies showed these variants may be associated with stroke. However, the role of the APOL1 risk variants in tobacco-related stroke is unknown. Methods and resultsIn a cross-sectional study, we examined whether APOL1 risk variants modified the relationship between tobacco smoking and stroke prevalence in 513 African American adults recruited at University of California, San Francisco. Using DNA, plasma, and questionnaires we determined APOL1 variants, smoking status, and stroke prevalence. Using logistic regression models, we examined the association between smoking (ever versus never smokers) and stroke overall, and among carriers of APOL1 risk variants (1 or 2 risk alleles), and noncarriers, separately. Among participants, 41% were ever (current and past) smokers, 54% were carriers of the APOL1 risk variants, and 41 had a history of stroke. The association between smoking and stroke differed by APOL1 genotype (Pinteraction term=0.014). Among carriers, ever versus never smokers had odds ratio (OR) 2.46 (95% CI, 1.08-5.59) for stroke (P=0.034); OR 2.00 (95% CI, 0.81-4.96) among carriers of 1 risk allele, and OR 4.72 (95% CI, 0.62-36.02) for 2 risk alleles. Among noncarriers, smoking was not associated with a stroke.ConclusionsCurrent and past smokers who carry APOL1 G1 and/or G2 risk variants may be more susceptible to stroke among the African American population.

Performance analysis is a critical step in the oft-repeated, iterative process of performance tuning of parallel programs. Per-process, per-thread traces (detailed logs of events with timestamps) enable in-depth analysis of parallel program execution to identify different kinds of performance issues. Often times, trace collection tools provide a graphical tool to analyze the trace output. However, these GUI-based tools only support specific file formats, are challenging to scale to large trace sizes, limit data exploration to the implemented graphical views, and do not support automated comparisons of two or more datasets. In this paper, we present a programmatic approach to analyzing parallel execution traces by leveraging pandas, a powerful Python-based data analysis library. We have developed a Python library, Pipit, on top of pandas that can read traces in different file formats (OTF2, HPCToolkit, Projections, Nsight Systems, etc.) and provides a uniform data structure in the form of a pandas DataFrame. Pipit provides operations to aggregate, filter, and transform the events in a trace to present the data in different ways. We also provide several functions to quickly and easily identify performance issues in parallel executions. More importantly, the API is easily extensible to support custom analyses by different end users.

Chirality, either of light or matter, has proved to be very practical in biosensing and nanophotonics. However, the fundamental understanding of its temporal dynamics still needs to be discovered. A realistic setup for this are the so-called metastructures, since they are optically active and are built massively, hence rendering an immediate potential candidate. Here we propose and study the electromagnetic-optical mechanism leading to chiral optical imprinting on metastructures. Induced photothermal responses create anisotropic permittivity modulations, different for left or right circularly polarized light, leading to temporal-dependent chiral imprinting of hot-spots, namely imprinting of chirality. The above effect has not been observed yet, but it is within reach of modern experimental approaches. The proposed nonlinear chiroptical effect is general and should appear in any anisotropic material; however, we need to design a particular geometry for this effect to be strong. These new chiral time-dependent metastructures may lead to a plethora of applications., Comment: Main (29 pages, 6 figures) and supplemental (46 pages, 35 figures)

Nanotechnology is an innovative method of elevating agricultural output without sacrificing quality due to nanoparticles (NPs) unique characteristics and numerous potential uses. It is also nature-friendly, advantageous to living organisms, and cost-effective. Sustainable agricultural practices are gaining attention on NPs and nanofertilizers (NFs) as practical substitutes for traditional fertilizers and pesticides that nanotechnology could surpass some of the issues with traditional farming methods. There should be an emphasis on cutting-edge studies of NPs applications in agriculture. This article presents a positive perspective on the mechanisms leading to the formation of NPs and their application as NFs for managing nutrients in agriculture. We also share up-to-date findings on NPs interactions with plants, the fate of NPs and potential risks associated with them in plants. The as well as on the role of NPs nanomaterials in decreasing abiotic and heavy metal toxicity stress. NFs help reduce the environmental damage caused by traditional, inorganic fertilizers. Due to their enhanced responsiveness and ability to pierce the epidermis, NFs can decrease nutrient surplus while increasing nutrient usage efficiency. It was also established that NPs are essential for protecting against abiotic stress. However, some studies have shown that NPs are harmful to higher plants because the NPs they are deposited upon the surface of cells or in the cell organelles, leading to oxidative stress symptoms. In this review article, we explore the utilization of NPs for nutrient and abiotic stress management for crop production and protection during the climate change era.

A self-organizing joint system classical oscillator + random environment is considered within the framework of a complex probabilistic process that satisfies a Langevin-type stochastic differential equation. Various types of randomness generated by the environment are considered. In the limit of statistical equilibrium (SEq), second-order partial differential equations (PDE) are derived that describe the distribution of classical environmental fields. The mathematical expectation of the oscillator trajectory is constructed in the form of a functional-integral representation, which, in the SEq limit, is compactified into a two-dimensional integral representation with an integrand - the solution of the second-order complex PDE. It is proved that the complex PDE in the general case is reduced to two independent PDEs of the second-order with spatially deviating arguments. The geometric and topological features of the two-dimensional subspace on which these equations arise are studied in detail. An algorithm for parallel modeling of the problem has been developed., Comment: The paper contains 45 pages, 12 figures

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
In plasmonics, and particularly in plasmonic photochemistry, the effect of hot-electron generation is an exciting phenomenon driving new fundamental and applied research. However, obtaining a microscopic description of the hot-electron states represents a challenging problem, limiting our capability to design efficient nanoantennas exploiting these excited carriers. This paper addresses this limitation and studies the spatial distributions of the photophysical dynamic parameters controlling the local surface photochemistry on a plasmonic nanocrystal. We found that the generation of energetic electrons and holes in small plasmonic nanocrystals with complex shapes is strongly position-dependent and anisotropic, whereas the phototemperature across the nanocrystal surface is nearly uniform. Our formalism includes three mechanisms for the generation of excited carriers: the Drude process, the surface-assisted generation of hot-electrons in the sp-band, and the excitation of interband d-holes. Our computations show that the hot-carrier generation originating from these mechanisms reflects the internal structure of hot spots in nanocrystals with complex shapes. The injection of energetic carriers and increased surface phototemperature are driving forces for photocatalytic and photo-growth processes on the surface of plasmonic nanostructures. Therefore, developing a consistent microscopic theory of such processes is necessary for designing efficient nanoantennas for photocatalytic applications.

Physics - Optics - Abstract
The plasmon resonances (modes) of a metal nanostructure can be defined as a dipole, a quadrupole, or high-order modes depending on the surface charge distribution induced by the incident field. In a non-symmetrical environment or clusters, the modes can hybridize and exhibit different behavior and properties. In this work, we study experimentally and numerically the substrate-induced hybridization of plasmonic modes of a silver nanocylinder. The applications of plasmonic nanoparticles such as refractive index sensing and enhanced spectroscopies often rely on the sustained mode spectral position and specific spatial near-field distribution. However, we show that the implementation of such plasmonic nanoparticles in a sensing system can result in a change of the modes nature, its hybridization or dehybridization. These changes are not clearly pronounced in the far-field spectra and then may result in unexpected modifications of the sensor behavior. We show that the hybridization between the dipolar and quadrupolar modes of the plasmonic nanoparticle on the substrate results from quadrupolar mode excitation due to the superposition of the reflected and incoming light and, then, depends on the reflection of the substrate. The existence of the hybridized modes strongly depends on the surrounding environment of nanoparticles, and after the deposition of the nanometric polymer layer on top of the nanoparticle the hybridized modes vanish and are replaced by uncoupled multipolar resonances., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Low levels of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) are associated with an elevated risk of arteriosclerotic coronary heart disease. Heritability of HDL-C levels is high. In this research discovery study, we used whole-exome sequencing to identify damaging gene variants that may play significant roles in determining HDL-C levels. We studied 204 individuals with a mean HDL-C level of 27.8 ± 6.4 mg/dl (range: 4-36 mg/dl). Data were analyzed by statistical gene burden testing and by filtering against candidate gene lists. We found 120 occurrences of probably damaging variants (116 heterozygous; four homozygous) among 45 of 104 recognized HDL candidate genes. Those with the highest prevalence of damaging variants were ABCA1 (n = 20), STAB1 (n = 9), OSBPL1A (n = 8), CPS1 (n = 8), CD36 (n = 7), LRP1 (n = 6), ABCA8 (n = 6), GOT2 (n = 5), AMPD3 (n = 5), WWOX (n = 4), and IRS1 (n = 4). Binomial analysis for damaging missense or loss-of-function variants identified the ABCA1 and LDLR genes at genome-wide significance. In conclusion, whole-exome sequencing of individuals with low HDL-C showed the burden of damaging rare variants in the ABCA1 and LDLR genes is particularly high and revealed numerous occurrences in HDL candidate genes, including many genes identified in genome-wide association study reports. Many of these genes are involved in cancer biology, which accords with epidemiologic findings of the association of HDL deficiency with increased risk of cancer, thus presenting a new area of interest in HDL genomics.

Relapsing polychondritis (RPC) belongs to a group of rare rheumatic diseases with poorly understood etiology and pathogenesis. It is based on progressive systemic inflammatory damage to the cartilage tissue, primarily affecting ears, nose, trachea and bronchi. A standardized approach for the treatment of RPC has not yet been developed, so the treatment tactics are individualized for each patient. We describe a clinical case of a 39-year-old patient, who developed RPC after piercing the cartilaginous part of the ear. The components of the alloy used for the piercing could presumably serve as adjuvants and cause the development of a disease similar to ASIA syndrome (Autoimmune/Inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants) with inflammation of the cartilage of the nose and ears. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms are presented, as well as diagnostic criteria for ASIA syndrome.

Despite the association between cognitive impairment and delirium, little is known about whether genetic differences that confer cognitive resilience also confer resistance to delirium. To investigate whether older adults without postoperative delirium, compared with those with postoperative delirium, are more likely to have specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the FKBP5, KIBRA, KLOTHO, MTNR1B, and SIRT1 genes known to be associated with cognition or delirium. This prospective nested matched exploratory case-control study included 94 older adults who underwent orthopedic surgery and screened for postoperative delirium. Forty-seven subjects had incident delirium, and 47 age-matched controls were not delirious. The primary study outcome was genotype frequency for the five SNPs. Compared with participants with delirium, those without delirium had higher adjusted odds of KIBRA SNP rs17070145 CT/TT [vs. CC; adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03, 7.54; p = 0.04] and MTNR1B SNP rs10830963 CG/GG (vs. CC; aOR 4.14, 95% CI 1.36, 12.59; p = 0.01). FKBP5 SNP rs1360780 CT/TT (vs. CC) demonstrated borderline increased adjusted odds of not developing delirium (aOR 2.51, 95% CI 1.00, 7.34; p = 0.05). Our results highlight the relevance of KIBRA, MTNR1B, and FKBP5 in understanding the complex relationship between delirium, cognition, and sleep, which warrant further study in larger, more diverse populations.

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is characterized by the appearance of tumor-like foci in one or more organs, occurring synchronously or metachronously, due to fibro-inflammatory changes with hypersecretion of immunoglobulin G subclass 4 (IgG4) in tissues and/or blood serum. Diabetes mellitus (DM) develops among 43-68% of patients with IgG4-related pancreatitis. Diabetes against the background of IgG4-RD can be caused both by damage to the endocrine part of the pancreas and the use of glucocorticosteroids, but its course is moderate, with a rare need for insulin therapy. In both cases, the use of genetically engineered biological therapy with rituximab may be accompanied by an improvement in carbohydrate metabolism. This article describes the course of diabetes and the need for hypoglycemic therapy for 1.5 years in a patient treated with IgG4-RD.

Physics - Optics - Abstract
The arrangement of plasmonic nanoparticles in a non-symmetrical environment can feature the far-field and/or near-field interactions depending on the distance between the objects. In this work, we study the hybridization of three intrinsic plasmonic modes (dipolar, quadrupolar and hexapolar modes) sustained by one elliptical aluminium nanocylinder, as well as behavior of the hybridized modes when the nanoparticles are organized in array or when the refractive index of the surrounding medium is changed. The position and the intensity of these hybridized modes were shown to be affected by the near-field and far-field interactions between the nanoparticles. In this work, two hybridized modes were tuned in the UV spectral range to spectrally coincide with the intrinsic interband excitation and emission bands of ZnO nanocrystals. The refractive index of the ZnO nanocrystals layer influences the positions of the plasmonic modes and increases the role of the superstrate medium, which in turn results in the appearance of two separate modes in the small spectral region. Hence, the enhancement of ZnO nanocrystals photoluminescence benefits from the simultaneous excitation and emission enhancements., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, preprint

Background African American smokers have 2.5 times higher risk for stroke compared with nonsmokers (higher than other races). About 50% of the African American population carry 1 or 2 genetic variants (G1 and G2; rare in other races) of the apolipoprotein L1 gene (APOL1). Studies showed these variants may be associated with stroke. However, the role of the APOL1 risk variants in tobacco‐related stroke is unknown. Methods and Results In a cross‐sectional study, we examined whether APOL1 risk variants modified the relationship between tobacco smoking and stroke prevalence in 513 African American adults recruited at University of California, San Francisco. Among carriers, ever versus never smokers had odds ratio (OR) 2.46 (95% CI, 1.08–5.59) for stroke (P=0.034); OR 2.00 (95% CI, 0.81–4.96) among carriers of 1 risk allele, and OR 4.72 (95% CI, 0.62–36.02) for 2 risk alleles. Among noncarriers, smoking was not associated with a stroke. Conclusions Current and past smokers who carry APOL1 G1 and/or G2 risk variants may be more susceptible to stroke among the African American population.

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) is a neurodegenerative disease in which mutation of NPC1 or NPC2 gene leads to lysosomal accumulation of unesterified cholesterol and sphingolipids. Diagnosis of NPC disease is challenging due to non-specific early symptoms. Biomarker and genetic tests are used as first-line diagnostic tests for NPC. In this study, we developed a plasma test based on N-(3β,5α,6β-trihydroxy-cholan-24-oyl)glycine (TCG) that was markedly increased in the plasma of human NPC1 subjects. The test showed sensitivity of 0.9945 and specificity of 0.9982 to differentiate individuals with NPC1 from NPC1 carriers and controls. Compared to other commonly used biomarkers, cholestane-3β,5α,6β-triol (C-triol) and N-palmitoyl-O-phosphocholine (PPCS, also referred to as lysoSM-509), TCG was equally sensitive for identifying NPC1 but more specific. Unlike C-triol and PPCS, TCG showed excellent stability and no spurious generation of marker in the sample preparation or aging of samples. TCG was also elevated in lysosomal acid lipase deficiency (LALD) and acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD). Plasma TCG was significantly reduced after intravenous (IV) 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) treatment. These results demonstrate that plasma TCG was superior to C-triol and PPCS as NPC1 diagnostic biomarker and was able to evaluate the peripheral treatment efficacy of IV HPβCD treatment.

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The emission of neutron pairs from the neutron-rich $N\!=\!12$ isotones $^{18}$C and $^{20}$O has been studied by high-energy nucleon knockout from $^{19}$N and $^{21}$O secondary beams, populating unbound states of the two isotones up to 15~MeV above their two-neutron emission thresholds. The analysis of triple fragment-$n$-$n$ correlations shows that the decay $^{19}$N$(-1p)^{18}$C$^*\!\rightarrow^{16}$C+$n$+$n$ is clearly dominated by direct pair emission. The two-neutron correlation strength, the largest ever observed, suggests the predominance of a $^{14}$C core surrounded by four valence neutrons arranged in strongly correlated pairs. On the other hand, a significant competition of a sequential branch is found in the decay $^{21}$O$(-1n)^{20}$O$^*\!\rightarrow^{18}$O+$n$+$n$, attributed to its formation through the knockout of a deeply-bound neutron that breaks the $^{16}$O core and reduces the number of pairs., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Suppressor of Hairless [Su(H)], the transcription factor at the end of the Notch pathway in Drosophila, utilizes the Hairless protein to recruit two co-repressors, Groucho (Gro) and C-terminal Binding Protein (CtBP), indirectly. Hairless is present only in the Pancrustacea, raising the question of how Su(H) in other protostomes gains repressive function. We show that Su(H) from a wide array of arthropods, molluscs, and annelids includes motifs that directly bind Gro and CtBP; thus, direct co-repressor recruitment is ancestral in the protostomes. How did Hairless come to replace this ancestral paradigm? Our discovery of a protein (S-CAP) in Myriapods and Chelicerates that contains a motif similar to the Su(H)-binding domain in Hairless has revealed a likely evolutionary connection between Hairless and Metastasis-associated (MTA) protein, a component of the NuRD complex. Sequence comparison and widely conserved microsynteny suggest that S-CAP and Hairless arose from a tandem duplication of an ancestral MTA gene.

The CanSat Competition is an international design/build/fly engineering competition held yearly in Stephenville, Texas and provides students with an opportunity to design an aerospace system. It is designed to reflect a small-scale aerospace program and includes the project design life cycle from preliminary design review to post mission review. Teams of up to 10 undergraduate students build CanSats, which must complete a mission that changes every year. In this year’s mission, the CanSat will be launched to 700 meters using a high-powered model rocket, and must perform a controlled descent while transmitting data from its onboard sensors to a ground station computer. The CanSat consists of a container that must protect the science payload from damage during the launch and deployment. Initially, both descend under a parachute. At 400 meters, the payload is released and continues its descent using an autogyro propeller. The CanSat must be equipped with sensors for environmental conditions (temperature, pressure, GPS position, altitude) and system performance (orientation, battery voltage, auto-gyro spin rate). It must be capable of transmitting this data in real-time to a ground station computer. The scope of our project is designing and building the CanSat and ground station. The launch system (a high-power model rocket) is provided by the competition organizers to standardize launches. Our team represents UC Irvine in this international competition. Members of CanSat UCI will follow the engineering design process from concept generation through integration and test, actual operation of the system, and the concluding post-mission summary and debrief. This year’s objective is to build a probe (the CanSat) that transmits environmental data to a ground station and performs a controlled descent using a parachute and auto-gyro propeller. The mission and its requirements reflect aspects of real world missions, including telemetry requirements, communications, and autonomous operations. Our project deliverables are the Preliminary Design Review and Critical Design Review presentations, the CanSat and ground station hardware, and the post-mission review. We follow a yearly design cycle, adhering to deadlines and requirements imposed by the competition. This ensures all teammates gain experience with the full engineering design process.Faculty Advisor: Professor RangelEmail: cansatuci@gmail.comWebsite: https://sites.google.com/a/uci.edu/cansat/

Purpose: to evaluate the effectiveness of ametropia correction in patients with posterior corneal elevation but without signs of subclinical keratoconus, based on postoperative results of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (Trans PRK).Patients and methods. A retrospective comparative study was conducted to analyze the results of surface ablation, which was performed using transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy in 18 patients with posterior corneal elevation (36 eyes). The control group included 18 patients with eyes without these changes (36 eyes). Both groups were comparable in age, gender and refraction. Demographic data, pre- and postoperative refraction, NCOSIS and ICOSIS, maximum ablation, I/S ratio index, central corneal thickness, anterior and posterior keratometry, Biaocci-Versachi index for anterior and posterior surfaces, RMS (mk/mm2) in standard deviation, the highest elevation point of the posterior surface of the cornea — KVB (microns), index of asymmetry of tangential curvature of anterior and posterior were determined and analyzed in all patients the surfaces are SIF (D) and SIB(D), which determines the vertical asymmetry in the upper and lower hemispheres of the cornea.Results. Observations of the dynamics of these parameters were carried out for 12 months after surgery for patients of both groups, and showed that the conclusion of Trans PRK in patients with posterior corneal elevation leads to similar refractive results compared with normal eyes. The safety and effectiveness indicators for both groups were also comparable. Significant differences in the speed of vision restoration between the groups were revealed, which is manifested by significant differences in visual acuity indicators within 1 month after surgery, but by 1 year the differences are leveled. It was determined that the effectiveness of astigmatism correction in the group with posterior elevation was significantly lower. The refractive results in the elevation group were good. During the observation, there was no pronounced dynamics of the indicators of elevation of the posterior surface of the cornea. Conclusion: the method of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy can be recommended for the treatment of ametropia in patients with posterior corneal elevation, but without signs of subclinical keratoconus, however, the development of additional nomograms is required in order to increase the predictability of laser vision correction in patients of this category.

Periapical endodontic surgery (PES) for root amputation and tooth replacement by immediate implant placement are two possible treatment options for bone lesions in the root apex of a tooth that has previously undergone endodontic treatment. Treatment methods are performed when the effectiveness of orthograde canal revision is questionable or when such treatment cannot be performed. The effectiveness of these methods varies from study to study.
