Spin-to-charge conversion in monolayer and bilayer germanium(Ge) nanosheets was demonstrated via the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE). The CPGE current generated in a spin-splitting state of the Ge nanosheet reached a maximum value when the thickness of the Ge nanosheet corresponded to bilayer germanene, indicating that the top layer of the bilayer Ge nanosheet mainly contributed to the spin-to-charge conversion. Because the hybridization of orbitals is suppressed by isolation from the bottom Al layer for the top Ge nanosheet, the observed spin-to-charge conversion has a possibility to be related to the intrinsic features of germanene with breaking of inversion symmetry., Comment: 18pages, 4figures

The observation of a resonance structure in the opening angle of the electron-positron pairs in the $^{7}$Li(p,\ee) $^{8}$Be reaction was claimed and interpreted as the production and subsequent decay of a hypothetical particle (X17). Similar excesses, consistent with this particle, were later observed in processes involving $^{4}$He and $^{12}$C nuclei with the same experimental technique. The MEG II apparatus at PSI, designed to search for the $\mu^+ \rightarrow \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ decay, can be exploited to investigate the existence of this particle and study its nature. Protons from a Cockroft-Walton accelerator, with an energy up to 1.1 MeV, were delivered on a dedicated Li-based target. The $\gamma$ and the e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ pair emerging from the $^8\mathrm{Be}^*$ transitions were studied with calorimeters and a spectrometer, featuring a broader angular acceptance than previous experiments. We present in this paper the analysis of a four-week data-taking in 2023 with a beam energy of 1080 keV, resulting in the excitation of two different resonances with Q-value \SI{17.6}{\mega\electronvolt} and \SI{18.1}{\mega\electronvolt}. No significant signal was found, and limits at \SI{90}{\percent} C.L. on the branching ratios (relative to the $\gamma$ emission) of the two resonances to X17 were set, $R_{17.6} < 1.8 \times 10^{-6} $ and $R_{18.1} < 1.2 \times 10^{-5} $., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, submitted to EPJC

Acceleration of positive muons from thermal energy to $100~$keV has been demonstrated. Thermal muons were generated by resonant multi-photon ionization of muonium atoms emitted from a sheet of laser-ablated aerogel. The thermal muons were first electrostatically accelerated to $5.7~$keV, followed by further acceleration to 100 keV using a radio-frequency quadrupole. The transverse normalized emittance of the accelerated muons in the horizontal and vertical planes were $0.85 \pm 0.25 ~\rm{(stat.)}~^{+0.22}_{-0.13} ~\rm{(syst.)}~\pi~$mm$\cdot$mrad and $0.32\pm 0.03~\rm{(stat.)} ^{+0.05}_{-0.02} ~\rm{(syst.)}~\pi~$mm$\cdot$mrad, respectively. The measured emittance values demonstrated phase space reduction by a factor of $2.0\times 10^2$ (horizontal) and $4.1\times 10^2$ (vertical) allowing good acceleration efficiency. These results pave the way to realize the first-ever muon accelerator for a variety of applications in particle physics, material science, and other fields.

The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. In this paper, we propose a quantum algorithm for solving the linear advection-diffusion equation by employing a new approximate probabilistic imaginary-time evolution (PITE) operator which improves the existing approximate PITE. First, the effectiveness of the proposed approximate PITE operator is justified by the theoretical evaluation of the error. Next, we construct the explicit quantum circuit for realizing the imaginary-time evolution of the Hamiltonian coming from the advection-diffusion equation, whose gate complexity is logarithmic regarding the size of the discretized Hamiltonian matrix. Numerical simulations using gate-based quantum emulator for 1D/2D examples are also provided to support our algorithm. Finally, we extend our algorithm to the coupled system of advection-diffusion equations, and we also compare our proposed algorithm to some other algorithms in the previous works. We find that our algorithm gives comparable result to the Harrow-Hassidim-Lloyd (HHL) algorithm with similar gate complexity, while we need much less ancillary qubits. Besides, our algorithm outperforms a specific HHL algorithm and a variational quantum algorithm (VQA) based on the finite difference method (FDM)., Comment: 58 pages, 23 figures

We study hyperuniform properties for the square-triangle tilings. The tiling is generated by a local growth rule, where squares or triangles are iteratively attached to its boundary. The introduction of the probability $p$ in the growth rule, which controls the expansion of square and triangle domains, enables us to obtain various square-triangle random tilings systematically. We analyze the degree of the regularity of the point configurations, which are defined as the vertices on the square-triangle tilings, in terms of hyperuniformity. It is clarified that for $pp_c$, the squares and triangles are spatially well mixed and the point configurations belong to the hyperuniform class III with the exponent $0<\alpha<1$. This means the existence of the hyperuniform-antihyperuniform transition at $p=p_c$. We also examine the structure factor of the square-triangle tilings. It is clarified that the peak structures in the large-wave-number regime are mostly common to all square-triangle tilings, while those in the small-wave-number regime strongly depend on whether the point configurations are hyperuniform or antihyperuniform., Comment: 14 pages, 18 figures

We investigate the intrinsic spin Nernst effect (SNE), a transverse spin current induced by temperature gradients, in topological Dirac semimetals (TDSMs) and magnetic Weyl semimetals (MWSMs) with Ising spin-orbit coupling. The intrinsic SNE is described by the spin Berry curvature, which reflects the geometric nature of TDSMs and MWSMs. We clarified that the intrinsic SNE becomes significant when the Fermi energy is near, but slightly deviates from, the energy of the point nodes. In this situation, Bloch electrons with strong spin Berry curvature contribute to the SNE while avoiding carrier compensation between electrons and holes. We found that in TDSMs with small Fermi surfaces, the spin Nernst angle, which measures the efficiency of the SNE, is larger than that observed in heavy metals. This suggests that TDSMs with small Fermi surfaces can achieve efficient heat-to-spin current conversion. In MWSMs, variation in the magnitude of the exchange coupling with magnetic moments significantly changes the SNE, affecting both the direction and magnitude of the spin Nernst current. This implies that ferromagnetic transitions can be used to reverse the spin Nernst current. We examine the difference in motion ordering between cellular systems with and without information transfer to evaluate the effect of the polar--polar interaction through mutual guiding, which enables cells to inform other cells of their moving directions. We compare this interaction with the polar--nonpolar interaction through cell motion triggered by cellular contact, which cannot provide information on the moving directions. We model these interactions on the basis of the cellular Potts model. We calculate the order parameter of the polar direction in the interactions and examine the cell concentration and surface tension conditions of ordering. The results suggest that the polar--polar interaction through mutual guiding efficiently induces the motion ordering in comparison with the polar-nonpolar interaction for contact triggering, except in cases of weak driving. We investigate when edge rings are pseudo-Gorenstein, which means that the leading coefficients of the $h$-polynomials of edge rings are equal to $1$. This study investigates the application of Factorization Machines with Quantum Annealing (FMQA) to address the crystal structure problem (CSP) in materials science. FMQA is a black-box optimization algorithm that combines machine learning with annealing machines to find samples to a black-box function that minimize a given loss. The CSP involves determining the optimal arrangement of atoms in a material based on its chemical composition, a critical challenge in materials science. We explore FMQA's ability to efficiently sample optimal crystal configurations by setting the loss function to the energy of the crystal configuration as given by a predefined interatomic potential. Further we investigate how well the energies of the various metastable configurations, or local minima of the potential, are learned by the algorithm. The MEG II experiment searches for a charged-lepton-flavour-violating $\mu \to e \gamma$ with the target sensitivity of $6 \times 10^{-14}$. A liquid xenon calorimeter with VUV-sensitive photosensors measures photon position, timing, and energy. This paper concentrates on the precise photon energy reconstruction with the MEG II liquid xenon calorimeter. Since a muon beam rate is $3\text{-}5 \times 10^{7}~\text{s}^{-1}$, multi-photon elimination analysis is performed using waveform analysis techniques such as a template waveform fit. As a result, background events in the energy range of 48-58 MeV were reduced by 34 %. In this article, we compare the methods implementing the real-time evolution operator generated by a unitary diagonal matrix where its entries obey a known underlying real function. When the size of the unitary diagonal matrix is small, a well-known method based on Walsh operators gives a good and precise implementation. In contrast, as the number of qubits grows, the precise one uses exponentially increasing resources, and we need an efficient implementation based on suitable approximate functions. Using piecewise polynomial approximation of the function, we summarize the methods with different polynomial degrees. Moreover, we obtain the overheads of gate count for different methods concerning the error bound and grid parameter (number of qubits). This enables us to analytically find a relatively good method as long as the underlying function, the error bound, and the grid parameter are given. This study contributes to the problem of encoding a known function in the phase factor, which plays a crucial role in many quantum algorithms/subroutines. In particular, we apply our methods to implement the real-time evolution operator for the potential part in the first-quantized Hamiltonian simulation and estimate the resources (gate count and ancillary qubits) regarding the error bound, which indicates that the error coming from the approximation of the potential function is not negligible compared to the error from the Trotter-Suzuki formula.

In this study, we propose a quantum-classical hybrid scheme for performing orbital-free density functional theory (OFDFT) using probabilistic imaginary-time evolution (PITE), designed for the era of fault-tolerant quantum computers (FTQC), as a material calculation method for large-scale systems. PITE is applied to the part of OFDFT that searches the ground state of the Hamiltonian in each self-consistent field (SCF) iteration, while the other parts such as electron density and Hamiltonian updates are performed by existing algorithms on classical computers. When the simulation cell is discretized into $N_\mathrm{g}$ grid points, combined with quantum phase estimation (QPE), it is shown that obtaining the ground state energy of Hamiltonian requires a circuit depth of $O(\log N_\mathrm{g})$. The ground state calculation part in OFDFT is expected to be accelerated, for example, by creating an appropriate preconditioner from the estimated ground state energy for the locally optimal block preconditioned conjugate gradient (LOBPCG) method., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

In this study, we employed a quantum computer to solve a low-energy effective Hamiltonian for spin defects in diamond (so-called NV centre) and wurtzite-type aluminium nitride, which are anticipated to be qubits. The probabilistic imaginary-time evolution (PITE) method, designed for use in a fault-tolerant quantum computer (FTQC) era, was employed to calculate the ground and excited states of the spin singlet state, as represented by the effective Hamiltonian. It is difficult to compute the spin singlet state correctly using density functional theory (DFT), which should be described by multiple Slater determinants. To mitigate the effects of quantum errors inherent in current quantum computers, we implemented a $[[ n+2,n,2 ]]$ quantum error detection (QED) code called the Iceberg code. Despite the inevitable destruction of the encoded state resulting from the measurement of the ancilla qubit at each PITE step, we were able to successfully re-encode and recover the logical success state. In the implementation of the PITE, it was observed that the effective Hamiltonian comprises large components of the diagonal part and a relatively small non-diagonal part, which is frequently the case with quantum chemistry calculations. An efficient implementation of Hamiltonian simulations, in which the diagonal components dominate, was developed on a quantum computer based on the second-order Trotter-Suzuki decomposition. This is the first instance of an encoded PITE circuit being executed on a trapped-ion quantum computer. Our results demonstrate that QED effectively reduces quantum errors and that we successfully obtained both the ground and excited states of the spin singlet state. Our demonstration clearly manifests that Zr$_{\rm Al}$V$_{\rm N}$, Ti$_{\rm Al}$V$_{\rm N}$, and Hf$_{\rm Al}$V$_{\rm N}$ defects have a high potential as spin qubits for quantum sensors., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures

This article provides an expository account of the celebrated duality theorem of Bavard and three its strengthenings. The Bavard duality theorem connects scl (stable commutator length) and quasimorphisms on a group. Calegari extended the framework from a group element to a chain on the group, and established the generalized Bavard duality. Kawasaki, Kimura, Matsushita and Mimura studied the setting of a pair of a group and its normal subgroup, and obtained the mixed Bavard duality. The first half of the present article is devoted to an introduction to these three Bavard dualities. In the latter half, we present a new strengthening, the generalized mixed Bavard duality, and provide a self-contained proof of it. This third strengthening recovers all of the Bavard dualities treated in the first half; thus, we supply complete proofs of these four Bavard dualities in a unified manner. In addition, we state several results on the space $\mathrm{W}(G,N)$ of non-extendable quasimorphisms, which is related to the comparison problem between scl and mixed scl via the mixed Bavard duality., Comment: 57 pages, 11 figures

We present the microscopic theory of the spin Nernst effect, which is a transverse spin current directly induced by a temperature gradient, employing the linear response theory with Luttinger's gravitational potential method. We consider a generic, non-interacting electron system with randomly distributed impurities and evaluate the spin current response to the gravitational potential. Our theory takes into account a contribution of the local equilibrium current modified by Luttinger's gravitational potential and is thus consistent with the thermodynamic principle that thermal responses should vanish. The Ward-Takahashi identities ensure that the spin Nernst current is well-behaved at low temperatures in any order of the random impurity potentials. Furthermore, we microscopically derive the spin-current version of Mott's formula, which associates the spin Nernst coefficient with the spin Hall conductivity. The spin-current version of the St\v{r}eda formula is also discussed. To demonstrate these findings, the spin Nernst current of three-dimensional Dirac electrons is computed. We investigate the anomalous thermal Hall effect (ATHE) in Weyl superconductors realized by the $E_{1u}$ ($p$-wave and $f$-wave) chiral superconducting order for the point group $D_{6h}$. Using the quasiclassical transport theory, we analyze the influence of the impurity scatterings and the line-nodal excitations on the ATHE. We compare the extrinsic (impurity-induced) ATHE with the intrinsic (topological) ATHE to identify the dominant contribution. Because the transverse response is sensitive to the slope in the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi energy, the extrinsic ATHE vanishes in both the Born (weak impurity potential) and unitarity (strong impurity potential) limits. The amplitude of the impurity contribution to the thermal Hall conductivity (THC) reaches maximum between these limits when the slope of the DOS becomes large due to impurity bands near the Fermi energy. In such situations, the extrinsic ATHE dominates the intrinsic ATHE even at low temperatures. The extrinsic ATHE is sensitive to line-nodal excitations, whereas the intrinsic ATHE is insensitive to bulk excitations. When line nodes involve the sign change of the order parameter, the impurity contribution to the THC is suppressed even though the phase space for low-energy excitation is large. In contrast, if line nodes are not accompanied by such sign changes, the extrinsic ATHE is significantly enhanced. In this paper, we compute the dual $F$-signatures of certain toric rings by using combinatorial techniques. Specifically, we calculate the dual $F$-signatures of Veronese subrings of polynomial rings. Moreover, we give an upper bound for the dual $F$-signatures of Segre products of polynomial rings and show that this upper bound is attained in some cases., Comment: 14 pages

One of the crucial generic techniques for quantum computation is amplitude encoding. Although several approaches have been proposed, each of them often requires exponential classical-computational cost or an oracle whose explicit construction is not provided. Given the growing demands for practical quantum computation, we develop moderately specialized encoding techniques that generate an arbitrary linear combination of localized complex functions. We demonstrate that $n_{\mathrm{loc}}$ discrete Lorentzian functions as an expansion basis set lead to eficient probabilistic encoding, whose computational time is $\mathcal{O}( \max ( n_{\mathrm{loc}}^2 \log n_{\mathrm{loc}},n_{\mathrm{loc}}^2 \log n_q, n_q ))$ for $n_q$ data qubits equipped with $\log_2 n_{\mathrm{loc}}$ ancillae. Furthermore, amplitude amplification in combination with amplitude reduction renders it deterministic analytically with controllable errors and the computational time is reduced to $\mathcal{O}( \max ( n_{\mathrm{loc}}^{3/2} \log n_{\mathrm{loc}}, n_{\mathrm{loc}}^{3/2} \log n_q, n_q )).$ We estimate required resources for applying our scheme to quantum chemistry in real space. The presence of an absorber in one of the paths of an interferometer changes the output statistics of that interferometer in a fundamental manner. Since the individual quantum particles detected at any of the outputs of the interferometer have not been absorbed, any non-trivial effect of the absorber on the distribution of these particles over these paths is a counterfactual effect. Here, we quantify counterfactual effects by evaluating the information about the presence or absence of the absorber obtained from the output statistics, distinguishing between classical and quantum counterfactual effects. We identify the counterfactual gain which quantifies the advantage of quantum counterfactual protocols over classical counterfactual protocols, and show that this counterfactual gain can be separated into two terms: a semi-classical term related to the amplitude blocked by the absorber, and a Kirkwood-Dirac quasiprobability assigning a joint probability to the blocked path and the output port. A negative Kirkwood-Dirac term between a path and an output port indicates that inserting the absorber into that path will have a focussing effect, increasing the probability of particles arriving at that output port, resulting in a significant enhancement of the counterfactual gain. We show that the magnitude of quantum counterfactual effects cannot be explained by a simple removal of the absorbed particles, but originates instead from a well-defined back-action effect caused by the presence of the absorber in one path, on particles in other paths., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. Superconducting spintronics focuses on the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism and has sparked significant interest in nonunitary superconductors as a platform for novel magneto-superconducting phenomena. However, a direct test for nonunitary superconductors is currently absent, and their identification is challenging. In this paper, we demonstrate that spin current driven by the thermal gradient sensitively probes the nature of the condensate in nonunitary superconductors. We should note that the spin polarization of the condensate in the momentum space induces the spin-Seebeck effect, and the spin-dependent chirality (spin-chirality) of the condensate induces the spin-Nernst effect in nonunitary superconductors. Notably, the nonvanishing spin-Seebeck effect provides a smoking gun evidence of nonunitary superconductivity in materials because it reflects the spin polarization of the Cooper pairs in the momentum space, irrespective of whether the net pair spin magnetization vanishes. Aperiodic crystals constitute a fascinating class of materials that includes incommensurate (IC) modulated structures and quasicrystals (QCs). Although these two categories share a common foundation in the concept of superspace, the relationship between them has remained enigmatic and largely unexplored. Here, we show "any metallic-mean" QCs, surpassing the confines of Penrose-like structures, and explore their connection with IC modulated structures. In contrast to periodic approximants of QCs, our work introduces the pivotal role of "aperiodic approximants", articulated through a series of $k$-th metallic-mean tilings serving as aperiodic approximants for the honeycomb crystal, while simultaneously redefining this tiling as a metallic-mean IC modulated structure, highlighting the intricate interplay between these crystallographic phenomena. We extend our findings to real-world applications, discovering these unique tiles in a terpolymer/homopolymer blend and applying our QC theory to a colloidal simulation displaying planar IC structures. In these structures, domain walls are viewed as essential components of a quasicrystal, introducing additional dimensions in superspace. The interstellar medium (ISM) in starburst galaxies contains plenty of chemical elements synthesised by core-collapse supernova explosions. By measuring the abundances of these metals, we can study the chemical enrichment within galaxies and the transportation of metals into circumgalactic environments through powerful outflows. We perform the spectral analysis of the X-ray emissions from the M82 core using the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton to accurately estimate the metal abundances in the ISM. We analyse over 300 ks of RGS data observed with fourteen position angles, covering an 80 arcsec cross-dispersion width. We employ multi-temperature thermal plasma components in collisional ionisation equilibrium (CIE) to reproduce the observed spectra, each exhibiting different spatial broadenings. The O vii band CCD image shows a broader distribution compared to those for O viii and Fe-L bands. The O viii line profiles have a prominent double-peaked structure, corresponding to the northward and southward outflows. The O vii triplet feature exhibits marginal peaks, and a single CIE component, convolved with the O vii band image, approximately reproduces the spectral shape. Combining a CIE model with a charge-exchange emission model also successfully reproduces the O vii line profiles. However, the ratio of these two components varies significantly with the observed position angles, which is physically implausible. Spectral fitting of the broadband spectra suggests a multi-temperature phase in the ISM, approximated by three components at 0.1, 0.4, and 0.7 keV. Notably, the 0.1 keV component exhibits a broader distribution than the 0.4 and 0.7 keV plasmas. The derived abundance pattern shows super-solar N/O, solar Ne/O and Mg/O, and half-solar Fe/O ratios. Abell 3667 is a nearby merging cluster with a prominent cold front and a pair of two bright radio relics. Assuming a head-on merger, the origin of the cold front is often considered to be a remnant of the cluster core stripped by its surrounding ICM. Some authors have proposed an offset merger scenario in which the subcluster core rotates after the first core crossing. This scenario can reproduce features such as the cold front and a pair of radio relics. To distinguish between these scenarios, we reanalyzed the ICM distribution and measured the line-of-sight bulk ICM velocity using the XMM-Newton PN data. In the unsharp masked image, we identify several ICM features. The notable feature is a RG1 vortex, which is a clockwise vortex-like enhancement with a radius of about 250 kpc connecting the first BCG to the radio galaxy (RG1). It is particularly enhanced near the north of the 1st BCG, which is named the BCG-N tail. The thermodynamic maps show that the ICM of the RG1 vortex has a relatively high abundance of 0.5-0.6 solar compared to the surrounding regions. The ICM of the BCG-E tail also has a high abundance and low pseudo-entropy and can be interpreted as a remnant of the cluster core's ICM. Including its arc-like shape, the RG1 vortex supports the idea that the ICM around the cluster center is rotating, which is natural for an offset merger scenario. The results of the line-of-sight bulk ICM velocity measurements show that the ICM around the BCG-N tail is redshifted with a velocity difference of 940+/-440 km/s compared to the optical redshift of the first BCG. We obtain other indications of variations in the line-of-sight velocity of the ICM and discuss these in the context of an offset merger.
