Abstract

Abstract We present a novel approach for the search of dark matter in the DarkSide-50 experiment, relying on Bayesian Networks. This method incorporates the detector response model into the likelihood function, explicitly maintaining the connection with the quantity of interest. No assumptions about the linearity of the problem or the shape of the probability distribution functions are required, and there is no need to morph signal and background spectra as a function of nuisance parameters. By expressing the problem in terms of Bayesian Networks, we have developed an inference algorithm based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo to calculate the posterior probability. A clever description of the detector response model in terms of parametric matrices allows us to study the impact of systematic variations of any parameter on the final results. Our approach not only provides the desired information on the parameter of interest, but also potential constraints on the response model. Our results are consistent with recent published analyses and further refine the parameters of the detector response model.

Abstract

Abstract Aria is a plant hosting a $${350}\,\hbox {m}$$ 350 m cryogenic isotopic distillation column, the tallest ever built, which is being installed in a mine shaft at Carbosulcis S.p.A., Nuraxi-Figus (SU), Italy. Aria is one of the pillars of the argon dark-matter search experimental program, lead by the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration. It was designed to reduce the isotopic abundance of $${^{39}\hbox {Ar}}$$ 39 Ar in argon extracted from underground sources, called Underground Argon (UAr), which is used for dark-matter searches. Indeed, $${^{39}\hbox {Ar}}$$ 39 Ar is a $$\beta $$ β -emitter of cosmogenic origin, whose activity poses background and pile-up concerns in the detectors. In this paper, we discuss the requirements, design, construction, tests, and projected performance of the plant for the isotopic cryogenic distillation of argon. We also present the successful results of the isotopic cryogenic distillation of nitrogen with a prototype plant.

Abstract

IntroductionPathogenic variants in different genes have been described as involved in the development of familial focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). A more precise genotype–phenotype correlation would be helpful to better characterize the clinical and laboratorial manifestations of this disease, as well as response to treatment. We analyzed podocin (NPHS2) gene variants in 50 members of four generations of a family with late-onset presentation of glomerular disease.Results and DiscussionThe NPHS2 gene variants R229Q and/or R291W were detected in several individuals, and the phenotype of FSGS with progressive loss of renal function was observed in all the family members carrying both mutations simultaneously. Patients manifested ongoing proteinuria over the years and progressive loss of renal function, which in three women culminated in renal replacement therapy by the 4th decade of life. In two affected patients with nephrotic syndrome, remission was not reached by the use of corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs. The R229Q variant was pathogenic only when trans-associated with specific mutations, as the R291W variant in this family.ConclusionCoexistence of the two NPHS2 variants R229Q and R291W in compound heterozygosis was a determinant of the FSGS phenotype. The presence of these variants alone in heterozygosis did not cause significant proteinuria.

Abstract

Se presentan las nuevas estrategias introducidas en el Plan de Formación de la Biblioteca de la Universidad de Málaga referidas, por un lado, a la integración del aprendizaje de las competencias informacionales en el currículo académico, en la programación docente de grados y posgrados, en los planes de formación del personal docente e investigador y en el aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida; y, por otro, a la implementación de tecnologías de la comunicación que posibilita la formación en directo a grandes grupos y de manera interactiva. Se analizan los resultados de cada una de las acciones formativas, especialmente la percepción por parte de los asistentes, que han ayudado a revisar sus enfoques y despliegues, además de avalar su continuidad en el futuro.

7. Effect of combined NPHS2 and ACTN4 variants in the onset and severity of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis

Abstract

Introduction: Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) can be caused by mutations in the genes NPHS2, ACTN4, TRPC6, and INF2 among others, presenting variable levels of proteinuria, including nephrotic syndrome, that frequently progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The establishment of the genotype-phenotype correlation caused by mutations in genes expressed in the podocyte could contribute to understanding their role in FSGS and to the decision-making in the clinical setting in similar cases. Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood of the proband, his brother, sister and mother. All the exons of the genes NPHS2, ACTN4, TRPC6, and INF2 were amplified by a polymerase chain reaction, purified, and sequenced by the Sanger method. The presence of variants was evaluated in the proband with FSGS and relatives, reviewed, and annotated using dbSNP and HGMD. Results: In the clinical evaluation, the proband and his brother presented childhood-onset nephrotic syndrome, added with renal biopsies confirming FSGS, which was resistant to steroid and other immunosuppressive drugs, and progressed to ESRD. Both patients showed the variants p.P316S in NPHS2 and p.G894S in ACTN4, as well as the polymorphism p.R229Q in NPHS2, all variants in heterozygosis. Their parents were healthy, and the mother presented only the variant p.P316S in NPHS2 in heterozygosis. Conclusions: The family members with FSGS had a combination of the variants p.P316S and p.R229Q in NPHS2, and p.G894S in ACTN4, shared similar clinical presentation, nephrotic syndrome with onset in late childhood that rapidly progressed to ESRD.

13. Furfurilactobacillus milii sp. nov., isolated from fermented cereal foods

Abstract

Genomic characterization of Furfurilactobacillus rossiae revealed that strains which were previously identified as F. rossiae are genetically heterogeneous. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of strains FUA3430, FUA3583, C5, FUA3115 and FUA3119, were 99.6 % identical to F. rossiae but the core genome analysis revealed that these strains share less than 93 % average nucleotide identity (ANI) with the F. rossiae type strain DSM 15814T. Because the ANI value is below the threshold for delineation of bacterial species, we propose the novel species Furfurilactobacillus milii sp. nov. with the type strain FUA3430T (=DSM 113338T=LMG 32478T). Strains of F. milii have smaller genomes than F. rossiae , lack the pdu-cbi-cob-hem cluster which is responsible for 1,2-propanediol utilization in F. rossiae , and lack genes involved in ethanolamine utilization. Two strains of the novel species (FUA3430T and FUA3583) were compared to F. rossiae FUA3214. Analysis of the cellular fatty acid composition and metabolite analysis did not reveal significant differences between F. milii sp. nov. and F. rossiae FUA3124. Although the growth requirements with respect to temperature and pH were very similar, only the strain of F. rossiae utilized melibiose and d-xylose. Morphological differences were also seen in the colony and cell size of the novel compared to F. rossiae .

Abstract

In April 2020, the European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) Research Academy and the ESCAP Board launched the first of three scheduled surveys to evaluate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) services in Europe and to assess the abilities of CAP centers to meet the new challenges brought on by the crisis. The survey was a self-report questionnaire, using a multistage process, which was sent to 168 heads of academic CAP services in 24 European countries. Eighty-two responses (56 complete) from 20 countries, representing the subjective judgement of heads of CAP centers, were received between mid-April and mid-May 2020. Most respondents judged the impact of the crisis on the mental health of their patients as medium (52%) or strong (33%). A large majority of CAP services reported no COVID-19 positive cases among their inpatients and most respondents declared no or limited sick leaves in their team due to COVID-19. Outpatient, daycare, and inpatient units experienced closures or reductions in the number of treated patients throughout Europe. In addition, a lower referral rate was observed in most countries. Respondents considered that they were well equipped to handle COVID-19 patients despite a lack of protective equipment. Telemedicine was adopted by almost every team despite its sparse use prior to the crisis. Overall, these first results were surprisingly homogeneous, showing a substantially reduced patient load and a moderate effect of the COVID-19 crisis on psychopathology. The effect on the organization of CAP services appears profound. COVID-19 crisis has accelerated the adoption of new technologies, including telepsychiatry. Este trabalho tem por objetivo a preparação, caracterização e avaliação da permeabilidade ao vapor de água de filmes nanocompósitos poliméricos. Um polietileno linear de baixa densidade linear (PEBDL) foi utilizado como matriz e uma argila bentonita Paraibana na sua forma natural, purificada e organofilizada foi adicionada à matriz em concentrações de 1 a 2% em massa. As argilas e os nanocompósitos foram caracterizados por espectroscopia no infravermelho (FTIR) e por difração de raios x (DRX). A permeação ao vapor de água dos filmes foi determinada em função do teor e modificação da carga mineral. Os resultados mostram que a purificação (remoção de matéria orgânica) e que a organofilização da carga foram eficientes e que nanocompósitos com morfologia intercalada foram obtidos em todos os casos. A presença de carga aumentou significativamente a permeabilidade dos filmes ao vapor de água, mas os efeitos da purificação e/ou organofilização da argila, bem como do teor de carga, nesta propriedade, foram discretos.This work is concerned with the preparation, characterization and measurement of water vapor permeability of LLDPE/bentonite nanocomposite films, containing 1% and 2% of natural, purified, and organophilized clay. FTIR and XRD techniques were used to characterize the clay and the composites. The results pointed to an effective clay purification procedure (removal of organic matter). Mostly intercalated nanocomposites were obtained in all cases. The addition of clay significantly increased the permeability of the films to water vapor. However, purification and/or organophilization of the clay, as well as loading level, were found to have little effect on the permeability.

Abstract

Objective To present the adaptations to treatment protocols made in a child and adolescent eating disorders (ED) unit during the eight-week confinement period mandated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and examine clinical and treatment variables in the outpatient, day hospital, and inpatient care programs. Method Description of the implementation of a combined teletherapy program for outpatient and day-hospital patients and the adaptations made to the inpatient protocol. Retrospective review of medical records and analysis of general and specific variables related to the pandemic and confinement. Results We held 1,329 (73.10%) telehealth consultations and 489 (26.9%) face-to-face outpatient visits with 365 patients undergoing treatment in the outpatient clinic or day hospital. Twenty-eight (7.67%) were initial evaluations. Twenty-two patients were newly admitted and 68 ED-related emergencies were attended. Almost half of the children and adolescents studied experienced reactivation of ED symptoms despite treatment, and severe patients (25%) presented self-harm and suicide risk. Conclusions The implementation of a combined teletherapy program has enabled continuity of care during confinement for children and adolescents with ED. Delivery of treatment to adolescents in the day hospital program posed the biggest challenge due to their greater degrees of severity and higher hospitalization rates. An adapted inpatient program should be maintained throughout confinement, as the need for hospitalization of children and adolescents with ED does not decrease with lockdown.

Abstract

Ursolic acid is a very important compound due to its biological potential as an anti-inflammatory, trypanocidal, antirheumatic, antiviral, antioxidant and antitumoral agent. This study presents the HPLC analysis of ursolic acid (UA) content in eight different Ocimum species: O. americanum L., O. basilicum L, O. basilicum var purpurascens Benth, O. basilicum var. minimum L, O. gratissimum L, O. micranthum Willd, O. selloi Benth. and O. tenuiflorum L. grown in Northeastern Brazil. In these Ocimum species, UA was detected in different yields, with O. tenuiflorum showing the highest content (2.02%). This yield is very significant when compared with other sources of UA.

Abstract

Aria is a plant hosting a$${350}\,\hbox {m}$$350mcryogenic isotopic distillation column, the tallest ever built, which is being installed in a mine shaft at Carbosulcis S.p.A., Nuraxi-Figus (SU), Italy. Aria is one of the pillars of the argon dark-matter search experimental program, lead by the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration. It was designed to reduce the isotopic abundance of$${^{39}\hbox {Ar}}$$39Arin argon extracted from underground sources, called Underground Argon (UAr), which is used for dark-matter searches. Indeed,$${^{39}\hbox {Ar}}$$39Aris a$$\beta $$β-emitter of cosmogenic origin, whose activity poses background and pile-up concerns in the detectors. In this paper, we discuss the requirements, design, construction, tests, and projected performance of the plant for the isotopic cryogenic distillation of argon. We also present the successful results of the isotopic cryogenic distillation of nitrogen with a prototype plant.

Abstract

Introduction Pathogenic variants in different genes have been described as involved in the development of familial focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). A more precise genotype-phenotype correlation would be helpful to better characterize the clinical and laboratorial manifestations of this disease, as well as response to treatment. We analyzed podocin (NPHS2) gene variants in 50 members of four generations of a family with late-onset presentation of glomerular disease. Results and discussion The NPHS2 gene variants R229Q and/or R291W were detected in several individuals, and the phenotype of FSGS with progressive loss of renal function was observed in all the family members carrying both mutations simultaneously. Patients manifested ongoing proteinuria over the years and progressive loss of renal function, which in three women culminated in renal replacement therapy by the 4th decade of life. In two affected patients with nephrotic syndrome, remission was not reached by the use of corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs. The R229Q variant was pathogenic only when trans-associated with specific mutations, as the R291W variant in this family. Conclusion Coexistence of the two NPHS2 variants R229Q and R291W in compound heterozygosis was a determinant of the FSGS phenotype. The presence of these variants alone in heterozygosis did not cause significant proteinuria.

Abstract

We report on an improved measurement of the $^8$B solar neutrino interaction rate with the Borexino experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. Neutrinos are detected via their elastic scattering on electrons in a large volume of liquid scintillator. The measured rate of scattered electrons above 3 MeV of energy is $0.223\substack{+0.015 \\ -0.016}\,(stat)\,\substack{+0.006 \\ -0.006}\,(syst)$ cpd/100 t, which corresponds to an observed solar neutrino flux assuming no neutrino flavor conversion of $\Phi\substack{\rm ES \\ ^8\rm B}=2.57\substack{+0.17 \\ -0.18}(stat)\substack{+0.07\\ -0.07}(syst)\times$10$^6$ cm$^{-2}\,$s$^{-1}$. This measurement exploits the active volume of the detector in almost its entirety for the first time, and takes advantage of a reduced radioactive background following the 2011 scintillator purification campaign and of novel analysis tools providing a more precise modeling of the background. Additionally, we set a new limit on the interaction rate of solar $hep$ neutrinos, searched via their elastic scattering on electrons as well as their neutral current-mediated inelastic scattering on carbon, $^{12}$C($\nu,\nu'$)$^{12}$C* ($E_{\gamma}$= 15.1 MeV).

Abstract

The Borexino liquid scintillator neutrino observatory has a unique capability to perform high-precision solar neutrino observations thanks to its exceptional radiopurity and good energy resolution (5% at 1 MeV). A comprehensive study of the pp-chain neutrinos was presented that includes the direct measurements of 7Be, pp and pep neutrino fluxes with the highest precision ever achieved (down to 2.8% in the 7Be component), the 8B with the lowest energy threshold, the best limit on CNO neutrinos and the first Borexino limit on hep neutrinos. These results are important to validate the MSW-LMA oscillation paradigm across the full solar energy range and to exclude possible Non-Standard neutrino Interactions (NSIs). In particular the effects of neutrino-flavor-diagonal Neutral-Current (NC) interactions that modify the vee and vτe couplings while preserving their chiral and flavor structures, have been investigated. At detection, the shape of the electron-recoil spectrum is affected by changes in the vee and vτe couplings, quantified by the parameters ε e L / R and ε τ L / R . New bounds to all four parameters were obtained, quite stringent compared to the global ones. In particular, the best constraint to-date on ε e L was achieved. A comprehensive summary of all the recent results on solar neutrinos from Borexino is reported in the present paper.

Abstract

We reanalize data collected with the DarkSide-50 experiment and recently used to set limits on the spin-independent interaction rate of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) on argon nuclei with an effective field theory framework. The dataset corresponds to a total (16660 $\pm$ 270) kg d exposure using a target of low-radioactivity argon extracted from underground sources. We obtain upper limits on the effective couplings of the 12 leading operators in the nonrelativistic systematic expansion. For each effective coupling we set constraints on WIMP-nucleon cross sections, setting upper limits between $2.4 \times 10^{-45} \, \mathrm{cm}^2$ and $2.3 \times 10^{-42} \, \mathrm{cm}^2$ (8.9 $\times 10^{-45} \, \mathrm{cm}^2$ and 6.0 $\times 10^{-42} \, \mathrm{cm}^2$) for WIMPs of mass of 100 $\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ (1000 $\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$) at 90\% confidence level., Accepted by PRD

Abstract

Borexino is a 280-ton liquid scintillator detector located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy and is one of the two detectors that has measured geoneutrinos so far. The unprecedented radio-purity of the scintillator, the shielding with highly purified water, and the placement of the detector at a 3800 m w.e. depth have resulted in very low background levels and have made Borexino an excellent apparatus for geoneutrino measurements. The analysis techniques of the latest geoneutrino results with Borexino were presented using the data obtained from December 2007 to April 2019, corresponding to an exposure of (1.12 ± 0.05) × 1032 protons × yr. Enhanced analysis techniques, such as an increased fiducial volume, improved veto for cosmogenic backgrounds, extended energy and coincidence time windows, as well as a more efficient α/β particle discrimination have been adopted in this measurement. The updated statistics and these elaborate resulted in a geoneutrino signal of 47.0 − 7.7 + 8.4 ( stat ) − 1.9 + 2.4 ( sys ) TNU with − 17.2 + 18.3 % total precision.

Abstract

Se presentan los objetivos, enfoque y despliegue del servicio de atención al usuario en línea a través de WhatsApp de la Biblioteca de la Universidad de Málaga, especialmente para los periodos de apertura de 24 horas, incidiendo en los horarios extraordinarios, durante tres periodos al año, coincidentes con las épocas de preparación de exámenes por parte del alumnado, donde el usuario recurre a los mismos para resolver dudas puntuales, planteadas desde cualquier lugar y en cualquier momento. Se analizan los resultados obtenidos y el cumplimiento de los objetivos desde su puesta en marcha, las revisiones y mejoras llevadas a cabo a la vista de ello y las perspectivas de futuro del servicio, así como las conclusiones a las que conduce.

Abstract

We report on searches for neutrinos and antineutrinos from astrophysical sources performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Electron antineutrinos ($\bar{\nu}_e$) are detected in an organic liquid scintillator through the inverse $\beta$-decay reaction. In the present work we set model-independent upper limits in the energy range 1.8-16.8 MeV on neutrino fluxes from unknown sources that improve our previous results, on average, by a factor 2.5. Using the same data set, we first obtain experimental constraints on the diffuse supernova $\bar{\nu}_e$ fluxes in the previously unexplored region below 8 MeV. A search for $\bar{\nu}_e$ in the solar neutrino flux is also presented: the presence of $\bar{\nu}_e$ would be a manifestation of a non-zero anomalous magnetic moment of the neutrino, making possible its conversion to antineutrinos in the strong magnetic field of the Sun. We obtain a limit for a solar $\bar{\nu}_e$ flux of 384 cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ (90% C.L.), assuming an undistorted solar $^{8}$B neutrinos energy spectrum, that corresponds to a transition probability $p_{ \nu_e \rightarrow \bar\nu_{e}}$ 1.8 MeV. At lower energies, by investigating the spectral shape of elastic scattering events, we obtain a new limit on solar $^{7}$Be-$\nu_e$ conversion into $\bar{\nu}_e$ of $p_{ \nu_e \rightarrow \bar \nu_{e}}, Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, 73 references

Abstract

Borexino is running at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboraries, Italy since 2007. Its technical distinctive feature is the unprecedented ultralow background of the inner scintillating core, which is the foundation for the outstanding achievements accumulated by this experiment. In this contribution, after recalling the main features of the detector, the impressive solar data gathered so far by Borexino will be summarized. Special emphasis will be given to the illustration of the recent release of the fluxes as stemming from the simultaneous real time spectroscopy of the neutrinos from the entire $pp$ nuclear fusion chain in the Sun, opening with the remarkable 2.7% accuracy of the ⁷Be flux the era of precision measurements also in the realm of the sub-MeV solar neutrinos. Such results put Borexino in the unique situation of being the only detector able to perform solar neutrino spectroscopy over the entire solar spectrum; the counterpart of this peculiar status, in the flavor conversion interpretation of the solar neutrino data, is the capability of Borexino alone to perform the full validation across the solar energy range of the MSW-LMA paradigm. This contribution will be concluded with an account of the Borexino accomplishments in the geo-neutrino field, marked by the detection of the geo-neutrino signal with a significance as high as $5.9\sigma$.

Abstract

We present the most recent solar neutrino results from the Borexino experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. In particular, refined measurements of all neutrinos produced in the {\it pp} fusion chain have been made. It is the first time that the same detector measures the entire range of solar neutrinos at once. These new data weakly favor a high-metallicity Sun. Abstract

The Borexino detector measures solar neutrino fluxes via neutrino-electron elastic scattering. Observed spectra are determined by the solar-$\nu_{e}$ survival probability $P_{ee}(E)$, and the chiral couplings of the neutrino and electron. Some theories of physics beyond the Standard Model postulate the existence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI's) which modify the chiral couplings and $P_{ee}(E)$. In this paper, we search for such NSI's, in particular, flavor-diagonal neutral current interactions that modify the $\nu_e e$ and $\nu_\tau e$ couplings using Borexino Phase II data. Standard Solar Model predictions of the solar neutrino fluxes for both high- and low-metallicity assumptions are considered. No indication of new physics is found at the level of sensitivity of the detector and constraints on the parameters of the NSI's are placed. In addition, with the same dataset the value of $\sin^2\theta_W$ is obtained with a precision comparable to that achieved in reactor antineutrino experiments., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures. The fraction of 218Po that is charged is found to be 0.37 ± 0.03 and the mobility of 218Po+ is (8.6 ± 0.1) × 10−4 cmVs2.

Abstract

The latest and more complete geo-neutrinos Borexino results, are briefly presented and discussed. Borexino is a liquid scintillator detector located at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy, whose primary purpose is the real-time spectroscopy of low energy solar neutrinos. It is the only experiment so far to have provided an evidence of geo-neutrinos existence beyond a 5σ significance level. The geo-neutrinos measurement and analysis, along with implications from the geological point of view, are shortly discussed.

International audience; The Borexino detector was built starting from 1996 in the underground hall C of Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy under about 1400 m of rock (3800 m.w.e) and it is mostly aimed to the study in real-time of the low-energy solar neutrinos.Since the beginning of data taking, in May 2007, the unprecedented detector radio-purity made the performances of the detector unique: a milestone has been very recently achieved with the measurement of solar pp neutrino flux, providing the first direct observation in real time of the key fusion reaction powering the Sun.In this contribution the most important Borexino achievements to the fields of solar, geo-neutrino and particle physics are reviewed and the future perspectives discussed, emphasizing in particular the unique possibility of Borexino to cover at the end of its program the entire solar neutrino spectrum and to exploit the possible existence of a fourth sterile neutrino (SOX project).

Abstract

Este trabalho tem por objetivo a preparação, caracterização e avaliação da permeabilidade ao vapor de água de filmes nanocompósitos poliméricos. Um polietileno linear de baixa densidade linear (PEBDL) foi utilizado como matriz e uma argila bentonita Paraibana na sua forma natural, purificada e organofilizada foi adicionada à matriz em concentrações de 1 a 2% em massa. As argilas e os nanocompósitos foram caracterizados por espectroscopia no infravermelho (FTIR) e por difração de raios x (DRX). A permeação ao vapor de água dos filmes foi determinada em função do teor e modificação da carga mineral. Os resultados mostram que a purificação (remoção de matéria orgânica) e que a organofilização da carga foram eficientes e que nanocompósitos com morfologia intercalada foram obtidos em todos os casos. A presença de carga aumentou significativamente a permeabilidade dos filmes ao vapor de água, mas os efeitos da purificação e/ou organofilização da argila, bem como do teor de carga, nesta propriedade, foram discretos.This work is concerned with the preparation, characterization and measurement of water vapor permeability of LLDPE/bentonite nanocomposite films, containing 1% and 2% of natural, purified, and organophilized clay. FTIR and XRD techniques were used to characterize the clay and the composites. The results pointed to an effective clay purification procedure (removal of organic matter). Mostly intercalated nanocomposites were obtained in all cases. The addition of clay significantly increased the permeability of the films to water vapor. However, purification and/or organophilization of the clay, as well as loading level, were found to have little effect on the permeability.

Abstract

Solar neutrinos have played a central role in the discovery of the neutrino oscillation mechanism. They still are proving to be a unique tool to help investigate the fusion reactions that power stars and further probe basic neutrino properties. The Borexino neutrino observatory has been operationally acquiring data at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy since 2007. Its main goal is the real-time study of low energy neutrinos (solar or originated elsewhere, such as geo-neutrinos). The latest analysis of experimental data, taken during the so-called Borexino Phase-II (2011-present), will be showcased in this talk - yielding new high-precision, simultaneous wide band flux measurements of the four main solar neutrino components belonging to the "pp" fusion chain (pp, pep, 7Be, 8B), as well as upper limits on the remaining two solar neutrino fluxes (CNO and hep).

Abstract

International audience; In more than ten years of operation, Borexino has performed a precision measurement of the solar neutrino spectrum, resolving almost all spectral components originating from the proton-proton fusion chain. The presentation will review the results recently released for the second data taking phase 2012–2016 during which the detector excelled by its unprecedentedly low background levels. New results on the rate of pp, 7Be, pep and 8B neutrinos as well as their implications for solar neutrino oscillations and metallicity are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Borexino measured with unprecedented accuracy the fluxes of solar neutrinos emitted at all the steps of the pp fusion chain. Still missing is the measurement of the flux of neutrinos produced in the CNO cycle. A positive measurement of the CNO neutrino flux is of fundamental importance for understanding the evolution of stars and addressing the unresolved controversy on the solar abundances. The measurement of the CNO neutrino flux in Borexino is challenging because of the low intensity of this component (CNO cycle accounts for about 1% of the energy emitted by Sun), the lack of prominent spectral features and the presence of background sources. The main background component is 210Bi decaying in the liquid scintillator of Borexino that creates events with an energy distribution very close to the one of CNO neutrino interactions. Since 2015 the collaboration undertook significant efforts to achieve an independent measurement of the background affecting a CNO measurement, whose impact on the sensitivity to a CNO signal will be discussed.

Abstract

International audience; About 99 per cent of solar energy is produced through sequences of nuclear reactions that convert hydrogen into helium, starting from the fusion of two protons (the pp chain). The neutrinos emitted by five of these reactions represent a unique probe of the Sun’s internal working and, at the same time, offer an intense natural neutrino beam for fundamental physics. Here we report a complete study of the pp chain. We measure the neutrino–electron elastic-scattering rates for neutrinos produced by four reactions of the chain: the initial proton–proton fusion, the electron-capture decay of beryllium-7, the three-body proton–electron–proton (pep) fusion, here measured with the highest precision so far achieved, and the boron-8 beta decay, measured with the lowest energy threshold. We also set a limit on the neutrino flux produced by the$^{3}$He–proton fusion (hep). These measurements provide a direct determination of the relative intensity of the two primary terminations of the pp chain (pp-I and pp-II) and an indication that the temperature profile in the Sun is more compatible with solar models that assume high surface metallicity. We also determine the survival probability of solar electron neutrinos at different energies, thus probing simultaneously and with high precision the neutrino flavour-conversion paradigm, both in vacuum and in matter-dominated regimes.

Abstract

Building on the successful experience in operating the DarkSide-50 detector, the DarkSide Collaboration is going to construct DarkSide-20k, a direct WIMP search detector using a two-phase Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) with an active (fiducial) mass of 23 t (20 t). This paper describes a preliminary design for the experiment, in which the DarkSide-20k LAr TPC is deployed within a shield/veto with a spherical Liquid Scintillator Veto (LSV) inside a cylindrical Water Cherenkov Veto (WCV). This preliminary design provides a baseline for the experiment to achieve its physics goals, while further development work will lead to the final optimization of the detector parameters and an eventual technical design. Operation of DarkSide-50 demonstrated a major reduction in the dominant 39Ar background when using argon extracted from an underground source, before applying pulse shape analysis. Data from DarkSide-50, in combination with MC simulation and analytical modeling, shows that a rejection factor for discrimination between electron and nuclear recoils of $>3 \times 10^{9}$ is achievable. This, along with the use of the veto system and utilizing silicon photomultipliers in the LAr TPC, are the keys to unlocking the path to large LAr TPC detector masses, while maintaining an experiment in which less than $< 0.1$ events (other than $\nu$ -induced nuclear recoils) is expected to occur within the WIMP search region during the planned exposure. DarkSide-20k will have ultra-low backgrounds than can be measured in situ, giving sensitivity to WIMP-nucleon cross sections of $1.2 \times 10^{-47}$ cm2 ( $1.1 \times 10^{-46}$ cm2) for WIMPs of 1 TeV/c2 (10 TeV/c2) mass, to be achieved during a 5 yr run producing an exposure of 100 t yr free from any instrumental background.

Abstract

We present the results of a search for dark matter WIMPs in the mass range below 20 GeV/c^2 using a target of low-radioactivity argon. The data were obtained using the DarkSide-50 apparatus at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). The analysis is based on the ionization signal, for which the DarkSide-50 time projection chamber is fully efficient at 0.1 keVee. The observed rate in the detector at 0.5 keVee is about 1.5 events/keVee/kg/day and is almost entirely accounted for by known background sources. We obtain a 90% C.L. exclusion limit above 1.8 GeV/c^2 for the spin-independent cross section of dark matter WIMPs on nucleons, extending the exclusion region for dark matter below previous limits in the range 1.8-6 GeV/c^2., 9 pages, 8 figures; submission accepted by journal

Abstract

We report the measurement of the longitudinal diffusion constant in liquid argon with the DarkSide-50 dual-phase time projection chamber. The measurement is performed at drift electric fields of 100 V/cm, 150 V/cm, and 200 V/cm using high statistics 39 Ar decays from atmospheric argon. We derive an expression to describe the pulse shape of the electroluminescence signal (S2) in dual-phase TPCs. The derived S2 pulse shape is fit to events from the uppermost portion of the TPC in order to characterize the radial dependence of the signal. The results are provided as inputs to the measurement of the longitudinal diffusion constant D L , which we find to be (4.12 ± 0.09) cm2/s for a selection of 140 keV electron recoil events in 200 V/cm drift field and 2.8 kV/cm extraction field. To study the systematics of our measurement we examine data sets of varying event energy, field strength, and detector volume yielding a weighted average value for the diffusion constant of (4.09 ± 0.12) cm2/s. The measured longitudinal diffusion constant is observed to have an energy dependence, and within the studied energy range the result is systematically lower than other results in the literature.

Abstract

29 p.-5 fig.-1 tab, The aim of this study was to evaluate the probiotic properties of six thermotolerant lactic acid bacteria isolated from cooked meat products. The bacteria were typed, by determination of the DNA sequence of their 16S rRNA coding genes, as one Enterococcus faecium (UAM1 strain) and five Pediococcus pentosaceus (UAM2-UAM6 strains). Under gastric stress conditions the viability of the Pediococci decreased more than five-fold, whereas E. faecium showed a high resistance (61% survival). Exposure to small intestine stress did not drastically affect the survival of any of the strains (less than one-fold decrease), which were able to grow in the presence of 0.3% bile. A hydrophilic surface profile was observed, with higher affinity for chloroform than for xylene. Strains showed high levels of auto-aggregation as well as co-aggregation with Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. The adherence of E faecium UAM1 to human Caco-2 cells (around 20%) was significantly higher than that obtained with the P. pentosaceus strains (2%–5%) and Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 (6%). The overall results indicate that E. faecium UAM1, has probiotic properties that predict its capability to colonize in competition with pathogens in the intestinal tract.
