1. AI-Spectra: A Visual Dashboard for Model Multiplicity to Enhance Informed and Transparent Decision-Making

Abstract

We present an approach, AI-Spectra, to leverage model multiplicity for interactive systems. Model multiplicity means using slightly different AI models yielding equally valid outcomes or predictions for the same task, thus relying on many simultaneous "expert advisors" that can have different opinions. Dealing with multiple AI models that generate potentially divergent results for the same task is challenging for users to deal with. It helps users understand and identify AI models are not always correct and might differ, but it can also result in an information overload when being confronted with multiple results instead of one. AI-Spectra leverages model multiplicity by using a visual dashboard designed for conveying what AI models generate which results while minimizing the cognitive effort to detect consensus among models and what type of models might have different opinions. We use a custom adaptation of Chernoff faces for AI-Spectra; Chernoff Bots. This visualization technique lets users quickly interpret complex, multivariate model configurations and compare predictions across multiple models. Our design is informed by building on established Human-AI Interaction guidelines and well know practices in information visualization. We validated our approach through a series of experiments training a wide variation of models with the MNIST dataset to perform number recognition. 2. Context-Aware Testing: A New Paradigm for Model Testing with Large Language Models

Abstract

The predominant de facto paradigm of testing ML models relies on either using only held-out data to compute aggregate evaluation metrics or by assessing the performance on different subgroups. However, such data-only testing methods operate under the restrictive assumption that the available empirical data is the sole input for testing ML models, disregarding valuable contextual information that could guide model testing. In this paper, we challenge the go-to approach of data-only testing and introduce context-aware testing (CAT) which uses context as an inductive bias to guide the search for meaningful model failures. We instantiate the first CAT system, SMART Testing, which employs large language models to hypothesize relevant and likely failures, which are evaluated on data using a self-falsification mechanism. Through empirical evaluations in diverse settings, we show that SMART automatically identifies more relevant and impactful failures than alternatives, demonstrating the potential of CAT as a testing paradigm., Comment: Presented at the 38th Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS 2024). *Rauba & Seedat contributed equally

5. Punch biopsies shorten time to clearance of high-risk human papillomavirus infections of the uterine cervix

Abstract

Abstract Background The primary objective was to determine human papilloma virus (HPV) clearance rate after cervical biopsy among women with persistent high-risk HPV infection compared with spontaneous HPV clearance rate in the absence of biopsy. Methods We collected data from a dedicated screening program of women aged 30–70 years old. Inclusion criteria for the baseline non-interventional cohort were a positive HPV test (hybrid capture 2, HC2) and normal cytology. In the baseline cohort women were followed with approximately yearly HPV-tests and cytology until HPV regressed (one negative HPV test) or interventions in the form of diagnostic biopsies or therapy. Women who had a diagnostic biopsy were included in the biopsy cohort and followed until HPV regression or therapy. Observed HPV regression rates and time to HPV regression were compared between baseline and biopsy cohorts. For the comparison, we used Fisher’s exact test for the HPV regression rates and interval-censored, accelerated failure time model for time to HPV regression. Results Among the 1079 women included in the baseline cohort, 499 (46.3%) had HPV clearance and 475 were referred for colposcopy with biopsy. The biopsy cohort comprised all women who were not treated and had at least one HC2 test after biopsy (201/475; 42.3%). Of those, 138 (68.7%) experienced HPV regression. In the biopsy cohort, time to clearance of HPV infection was approximately halved (0.46, 95% CI 0.38–0.56) compared with the baseline cohort. This result was robust in a wide range of sensitivity analyses. Conclusions A higher proportion of women cleared their HPV infection, and time to HPV clearance was shorter in the biopsy cohort than in the baseline cohort. It is reassuring for clinicians to know that conservative management of patients with HPV persistency is successful when colposcopy with biopsies excludes high-grade disease.

6. Risk-Sensitive Diffusion: Robustly Optimizing Diffusion Models with Noisy Samples

Abstract

Diffusion models are mainly studied on image data. However, non-image data (e.g., tabular data) are also prevalent in real applications and tend to be noisy due to some inevitable factors in the stage of data collection, degrading the generation quality of diffusion models. In this paper, we consider a novel problem setting where every collected sample is paired with a vector indicating the data quality: risk vector. This setting applies to many scenarios involving noisy data and we propose risk-sensitive SDE, a type of stochastic differential equation (SDE) parameterized by the risk vector, to address it. With some proper coefficients, risk-sensitive SDE can minimize the negative effect of noisy samples on the optimization of diffusion models. We conduct systematic studies for both Gaussian and non-Gaussian noise distributions, providing analytical forms of risk-sensitive SDE. To verify the effectiveness of our method, we have conducted extensive experiments on multiple tabular and time-series datasets, showing that risk-sensitive SDE permits a robust optimization of diffusion models with noisy samples and significantly outperforms previous baselines., Comment: Paper under review

8. Students' and Professionals' Perceived Creativity In Software Engineering: A Comparative Study

Abstract

Creativity is a critical skill that professional software engineers leverage to tackle difficult problems. In higher education, multiple efforts have been made to spark creative skills of engineering students. However, creativity is a vague concept that is open to interpretation. Furthermore, studies have shown that there is a gap in perception and implementation of creativity between industry and academia. To better understand the role of creativity in software engineering (SE), we interviewed 33 professionals via four focus groups and 10 SE students. Our results reveal 45 underlying topics related to creativity. When comparing the perception of students versus professionals, we discovered fundamental differences, grouped into five themes: the creative environment, application of techniques, creative collaboration, nature vs nurture, and the perceived value of creativity. As our aim is to use these findings to install and further encourage creative problem solving in higher education, we have included a list of implications for educational practice.

Abstract

Background As the societal value of vaccines is increasingly recognized, there is a need to examine methodological approaches that could be used to integrate these various benefits in the economic evaluation of a vaccine.Research design and methods A literature review and two expert panel meetings explored methodologies to value herd immunity, health spillover effects (beyond herd immunity), impact on antimicrobial resistance, productivity, and equity implications of vaccines.Results The consideration of broader benefits of vaccines in economic evaluation is complicated and necessitates technical expertise. Whereas methodologies to account for herd immunity and work productivity are relatively well established, approaches to investigate equity implications are developing and less frequently applied. Modeling the potential impact on antimicrobial resistance not only depends on the multi-faceted causal relationship between vaccination and resistance but also on data availability.Conclusions Different methods are available to value the broad impact of vaccines, and it is important that analysts are aware of their strengths and limitations and justify their choice of method. In the future, we expect that an increasing number of economic evaluations will consider the broader benefits of vaccines as part of their base-case analysis or in sensitivity analyses.

Abstract

Transformer-based large language models (LLMs) are constrained by the fixed context window of the underlying transformer architecture, hindering their ability to produce long and coherent outputs. Memory-augmented LLMs are a promising solution, but current approaches cannot handle long output generation tasks since they (1) only focus on reading memory and reduce its evolution to the concatenation of new memories or (2) use very specialized memories that cannot adapt to other domains. This paper presents L2MAC, the first practical LLM-based general-purpose stored-program automatic computer (von Neumann architecture) framework, an LLM-based multi-agent system, for long and consistent output generation. Its memory has two components: the instruction registry, which is populated with a prompt program to solve the user-given task, and a file store, which will contain the final and intermediate outputs. Each instruction in turn is executed by a separate LLM agent, whose context is managed by a control unit capable of precise memory reading and writing to ensure effective interaction with the file store. These components enable L2MAC to generate extensive outputs, bypassing the constraints of the finite context window while producing outputs that fulfill a complex user-specified task. We empirically demonstrate that L2MAC achieves state-of-the-art performance in generating large codebases for system design tasks, significantly outperforming other coding methods in implementing the detailed user-specified task; we show that L2MAC works for general-purpose extensive text-based tasks, such as writing an entire book; and we provide valuable insights into L2MAC's performance improvement over existing methods., Comment: Published in The Twelfth International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR), 2024. 21. Explaining Variation in Teachers' Use of ICT: A Learning Analytics Approach

Abstract

Significant attention has been paid to the use of ICT by teachers, especially during the COVID-19 health crisis. This usage has mostly been captured through self-reported survey measurements. Learning analytics can complement such findings, by using log data to document precisely how long teachers use ICT, and what ICT behaviors they perform online. Using log data of 800 teachers, the present study documents their use of ICT in mathematics on a digital learning platform used across Luxembourg during COVID-19 remote education. Our findings confirm the large differences between teachers' use of ICT found in previous research, measured here through the time spent active on the platform. The types of ICT behaviors teachers engage with online, measured via the SAMR model, explain most of this variation. Specifically, more time on the platform is associated with activities that create a meaningful learning experience, and redefined tasks that could engage students as active learners. Experience with the technology, and participation in incentive events and teacher training, explain another significant part of this variation.

22. The Psychometric Properties of the Hungarian Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire

Abstract

Parental reflective functioning refers to the ability of parents to understand their child as motivated by internal mental experiences such as thoughts and feelings. This study aimed to examine the factor structure of the Hungarian version of the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ) and to assess its relationships with general reflective functioning (Certainty and Uncertainty), attachment dimensions (Confidence, Relationships as secondary, The need for approval, Discomfort with closeness, Preoccupation with relationships) and the perception of the child (Warmth and Invasiveness) among mothers of children up to five years of age. Two hundred sixty-three mothers completed the PRFQ and The Reflective Functioning Questionnaire, of which 201 mothers also completed the Mothers' Object Relations Scale and The Attachment Style Questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the three-factor solution. Cronbach's alpha coefficients for Certainty about Mental States and Interest and Curiosity subscales were excellent, while it was lower for Pre-Mentalizing.

Abstract

IntroductionCnestis ferruginea is used frequently in African traditional medicine for treating infectious diseases. Previous bioassay-guided purification has identified hydroquinone as the major bio-active compound in the aforementioned plant, responsible for its antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. While the phenol hydroquinone can be directly extracted from the plant, it may undergo (reversible) oxidation under mild conditions to yield benzoquinone, a compound with known antimicrobial activity against i.a. S. aureus.MethodsWe, examined whether hydroquinone or its oxidation product, benzoquinone, is the active compound against bacteria such as S. aureus. To achieve this we performed broth microdilution (planktonic) and biofilm activity tests against two different strains of S. aureus. The inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of benzoquinone and hydroquinone under various circumstances were compared, assessing their stability, and examining their effectiveness against two strains of S. aureus (Rosenbach and USA 300) in both planktonic and biofilm environments.ResultsBenzoquinone demonstrated antibacterial activity against S. aureus Rosenbach and USA 300 with IC50 of 6.90 ± 2.30 mM and 7.72 ± 2.73 mM, respectively, while the corresponding values for hydroquinone were 15.63 ± 2.62 mM and 19.21 ± 4.84 mM, respectively. However, when oxidation was prevented by the addition of antioxidants such as ascorbic acid or glutathione, hydroquinone lost its antibacterial property, while benzoquinone retained activity. Comparing conditions in which hydroquinone could convert into benzoquinone against conditions in which this conversion was inhibited, showed that hydroquinone alone did not inhibit bacterial growth of S. aureus, while benzoquinone alone did.DiscussionThese results prove that the oxidation product benzoquinone is responsible for the antimicrobial activity previously ascribed to hydroquinone.

31. Transfer Learning with Kernel Methods

Abstract

Transfer learning refers to the process of adapting a model trained on a source task to a target task. While kernel methods are conceptually and computationally simple machine learning models that are competitive on a variety of tasks, it has been unclear how to perform transfer learning for kernel methods. In this work, we propose a transfer learning framework for kernel methods by projecting and translating the source model to the target task. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework in applications to image classification and virtual drug screening. In particular, we show that transferring modern kernels trained on large-scale image datasets can result in substantial performance increase as compared to using the same kernel trained directly on the target task. In addition, we show that transfer-learned kernels allow a more accurate prediction of the effect of drugs on cancer cell lines. For both applications, we identify simple scaling laws that characterize the performance of transfer-learned kernels as a function of the number of target examples. We explain this phenomenon in a simplified linear setting, where we are able to derive the exact scaling laws. By providing a simple and effective transfer learning framework for kernel methods, our work enables kernel methods trained on large datasets to be easily adapted to a variety of downstream target tasks.

Abstract

Laser cutters take vector data for the shapes they cut or engrave as input, however, re-using a given design with different material or on a different machine requires adaptation of the template. Unfortunately, vector drawings lack the semantic information required for an automated adjustment to new parameters, making the manual adjustment a tedious and error-prone process for end-users. We present LaserSVG, a standard-compliant vector-based file format, software library, and authoring tool to specify, generate, exchange and re-use responsive laser-cutting templates. With LaserSVG, designers can easily turn their vector-drawings into parametric templates that end-users can easily adjust to new materials or production parameters. Abstract

Trauma-Focused mentalization-based treatment (MBT-TF) is an adaptation of mentalization-based treatment (MBT) specifically developed for patients suffering from attachment or complex trauma, with the possibility of co-occurring borderline personality pathology. The creation of MBT-TF was driven by previous research and observations that interventions centered on mentalizing could be significantly improved by directly addressing the impact of trauma. MBT-TF aims to mitigate symptoms that arise post-trauma, such as hyperarousal, hypervigilance, intrusions, flashbacks, avoidance behaviors, dissociative experiences, negative perceptions of self and others, and ensuing relational difficulties. Implemented as a group intervention, MBT-TF typically spans 6–12 months. From a mentalizing perspective, trauma, particularly attachment trauma, leads to a failure in processing the effects of trauma through and with others. Stress and attachment behavioral systems are disrupted, which undermines the capacity for epistemic trust, and impairs mentalizing abilities. This paper offers a concise summary of the reasoning for MBT-TF’s creation, its theoretical underpinnings, and its clinical strategy for addressing the adverse impacts of trauma. It further details the treatment phases, their main goals, and their interventions, supplemented by clinical case examples that underscore MBT-TF’s distinctive attributes and frequent clinical hurdles.

Abstract

Objective. Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common musculoskeletal problem worldwide and its key symptom is pain. Guidelines recommend incorporating comorbidity-specific therapies into patient-centered care. Patients diagnosed with KOA frequently have insomnia, which is associated with higher-pain severity. For this reason, this study protocol outlines the methodology of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigating the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTi) combined with best-practice KOA care (BPC) compared to best-practice KOA care and lifestyle education. Methods. A 2-arm RCT in patients with KOA and insomnia is conducted, in which a total of 128 patients are randomly allocated to an intervention or control group. The experimental intervention consists of 12 sessions of physical therapist--led BPC with an additional 6 sessions of CBTi. The control intervention also receives BPC, which is supplemented with 6 general lifestyle information sessions. The primary outcome is the between-group difference in change in pain severity at 6 months after intervention. Secondary outcomes are pain-related outcomes, sleep-related outcomes, symptoms of anxiety and depression, level of physical activity and function, perceived global improvement, biomarkers of inflammation, and health-related quality of life. Assessments are conducted at baseline, immediately after intervention, and 3, 6, and 12 months after intervention. Furthermore, a cost-utility analysis for the proposed intervention will be performed alongside the RCT. Impact. This is the first RCT investigating the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a physical therapist--led intervention integrating CBTi into BPC in patients with KOA and insomnia. The results of this trial will add to the growing body of evidence on the effectiveness of individualized and comorbidity-specific KOA care, which can inform clinical decision-making and assist policymakers and other relevant stakeholders in optimizing the care pathway for patients with KOA. Abstract

Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant widely utilized in folk medicine due to its significant pharmacological and nutritional properties. Cajaninstilbene acid (CSA), a stilbene compound derived from pigeon pea leaves, has been extensively investigated since the 1980s. A thorough understanding of CSA’s mechanisms of action and its therapeutic effects on various diseases is crucial for developing novel therapeutic approaches. This paper presents an overview of recent research advancements concerning the biological activities and mechanisms of CSA and its derivatives up to February 2024. The review encompasses discussions on the in vivo metabolism of CSA and its derivatives, including antipathogenic micro-organisms activity, anti-tumor activity, systematic and organ protection activity (such as bone protection, cardiovascular protection, neuroprotection), anti-inflammatory activity, antioxidant activity, immune regulation as well as action mechanism of CSA and its derivatives. The most studied activities are antipathogenic micro-organisms activities. Additionally, the structure–activity relationships of CSA and its derivatives as well as the total synthesis of CSA are explored, highlighting the potential for developing new pharmaceutical agents. This review aims to provide a foundation for future clinical applications of CSA and its derivatives.
