Search

The symbiosis of strong interactions, flat bands, topology and symmetry has led to the discovery of exotic phases of matter, including fractional Chern insulators, correlated moir\'e topological superconductors, and Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Correlated metals, such as those present in Kondo lattices, rely on the screening of local moments by a sea of non-magnetic conduction electrons. Here, we report on a unique topological Kondo lattice compound, CeCo2P2, where the Kondo effect - whose existence under the magnetic Co phase is protected by PT symmetry - coexists with antiferromagnetic order emerging from the flat bands associated with the Co atoms. Remarkably, this is the only known Kondo lattice compound where magnetic order occurs in non-heavy electrons, and puzzlingly, at a temperature significantly higher than that of the Kondo effect. Furthermore, at low temperatures, the emergence of the Kondo effect, in conjunction with a glide-mirror-z symmetry, results in a nodal line protected by bulk topology near the Fermi energy. These unusual properties, arising from the interplay between itinerant and correlated electrons from different constituent elements, lead to novel quantum phases beyond the celebrated topological Kondo insulators and Weyl Kondo semimetals. We investigate the nature of the metallic metastable state in 1T-TaS2. Using microARPES, we measure the spatially-dependent modifications of the electronic structure of the sample following a short current pulse. We observe that, in some regions of the sample, a Fermi surface emerges, while other regions remain gapped. A detailed study of the band structure in these different regions suggests that the metallic parts are in a state similar to the nearly commensurate charge density wave (NC-CDW) state, where the gaps are suppressed and a band crosses the Fermi level. Furthermore, we find that the metallic and insulating regions of the sample exhibit different dispersions normal to the planes. This observation is consistent with a scenario in which the current pulse breaks the star-of-David dimers present in the commensurate charge density wave (C-CDW) state.

We show that in some transition metal dichalcogenides, minority regions of the cleaved sample surfaces show - unexpectedly and anomalously - a finite number of 2D electronic states instead of the expected 3D valence bands. In the case of NbS\textsubscript{2}, in addition to the typical spectrum associated with bulk 2Ha stacking, we also find minority regions with electronic structures consistent with few-layers of 3R stacking. In MoS\textsubscript{2} we find areas of both bulk 2Hc and 3R stackings, and regions exhibiting finite-layer quantisation of both types. We further find evidence for a more exotic 4Ha stacking of MoS\textsubscript{2}, in which the valence band maximum is quasi-2D. The results highlight how variation of the interlayer stacking of van der Waals materials beyond the commonly-reported bulk polytypes can yield novel electronic structures.

Tunable quantum materials hold great potential for applications. Of special interest are materials in which small lattice strain induces giant electronic responses. The kagome compounds AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) provide a testbed for such singular electronic states. In this study, through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we provide comprehensive spectroscopic measurements of the giant responses induced by compressive and tensile strains on the charge-density-wave (CDW) order parameter and high-order van Hove singularity (HO-VHS) in CsV3Sb5. We observe a tripling of the CDW gap magnitudes with ~1% strain, accompanied by the changes of both energy and mass of the saddle-point fermions. Our results reveal an anticorrelation between the unconventional CDW order parameter and the mass of a HO-VHS, and highlight the role of the latter in the superconducting pairing. The giant electronic responses uncover a rich strain tunability of the versatile kagome system in studying quantum interplays under lattice perturbations.

In continuation of research into RuCl$_3$ and RuBr$_3$ as potential quantum spin liquids, a phase with unique magnetic order characterised by long-range quantum entanglement and fractionalised excitations, the compound RuI$_3$ has been recently synthesised. Here, we show RuI$_3$ is a moderately correlated metal with two bands crossing the Fermi level, implying the absence of any quantum spin liquids phase. We find that the Fermi surface as measured or calculated for a 2D ($k_\text{x},k_\text{y}$) slice at any $k_\text{z}$ lacks mirror symmetry, i.e. is pseudochiral. We link this phenomenon to the ABC stacking in the R$\bar{3}$ space group of $\alpha$-RuI$_3$, which is achiral but lacks any mirror or glide symmetries. We further provide a formal framework for understanding when such a pseudochiral electronic structure may be observed.

A charge order has been discovered to emerge deep into the antiferromagnetic phase of the kagome metal FeGe. To study its origin, the evolution of the low-lying electronic structure across the charge order phase transition is investigated with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We do not find signatures of nesting between Fermi surface sections or van-Hove singularities in zero-frequency joint density of states, and there are no obvious energy gaps at the Fermi level, which exclude the nesting mechanism for the charge order formation in FeGe. However, two obvious changes in the band structure have been detected, i.e., one electron-like band around the K point and another one around the A point move upward in energy position when the charge order forms. These features can be well reproduced by our density-functional theory calculations, where the charge order is primarily driven by magnetic energy saving via large dimerizations of a quarter of Ge1-sites (in the kagome plane) along the c-axis. Charge Density Waves (CDW) are commonly associated with the presence of near-Fermi level states which are separated from others, or "nested", by a wavector of $\mathbf{q}$. Here we use Angle-Resolved Photo Emission Spectroscopy (ARPES) on the CDW material Ta$_2$NiSe$_7$ and identify a total absence of any plausible nesting of states at the primary CDW wavevector $\mathbf{q}$. Nevertheless we observe spectral intensity on replicas of the hole-like valence bands, shifted by a wavevector of $\mathbf{q}$, which appears with the CDW transition. In contrast, we find that there is a possible nesting at $\mathbf{2q}$, and associate the characters of these bands with the reported atomic modulations at $\mathbf{2q}$. Our comprehensive electronic structure perspective shows that the CDW-like transition of Ta$_2$NiSe$_7$ is unique, with the primary wavevector $\mathbf{q}$ being unrelated to any low-energy states, but suggests that the reported modulation at $\mathbf{2q}$, which would plausibly connect low-energy states, might be more important for the overall energetics of the problem.

We report experimental coupling of chiral magnetism and superconductivity in [IrFeCoPt]/Nb heterostructures. The stray field of skyrmions with radius ~50nm is sufficient to nucleate antivortices in a 25nm Nb film, with unique signatures in the magnetization, critical current and flux dynamics, corroborated via simulations. We also detect a thermally-tunable Rashba-Edelstein exchange coupling in the isolated skyrmion phase. This realization of a strongly interacting skyrmion-(anti)vortex system opens a path towards controllable topological hybrid materials, unattainable to date., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

One way to induce insulator to metal transitions in the spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 is to substitute iridium with transition metals (Ru, Rh). However, this creates intriguing inhomogeneous metallic states, which cannot be described by a simple doping effect. We detail the electronic structure of the Ru-doped case with angle-resolved photoemission and show that, contrary to Rh, it cannot be connected to the undoped case by a rigid shift. We further identify bands below $E_F$ coexisting with the metallic ones that we assign to non-bonding Ir sites. We rationalize the differences between Rh and Ru by a different hybridization with oxygen, which mediates the coupling to Ir and sensitively affects the effective doping. We argue that the spin-orbit coupling does not control neither the charge transfer nor the transition threshold.

With optical spectroscopy we provide evidence that the insulator-metal transition in Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{4}$ occurs close to a crossover from the Mott- to the Slater-type. The Mott-gap at $x = 0$ persists to high temperature and evolves without an anomaly across the N\'{e}el temperature, $T_N$. Upon Rh-doping, it collapses rather rapidly and vanishes around $x = 0.055$. Notably, just as the Mott-gap vanishes yet another gap appears that is of the Slater-type and develops right below $T_N$. This Slater-gap is only partial and is accompanied by a reduced scattering rate of the remaining free carriers, similar as in the parent compounds of the iron arsenide superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Sr2IrO4 is characterized by a large spin-orbit coupling, which gives rise to bands with strongly entangled spin and orbital characters, called J=1/2 and J=3/2. We use light-polarization dependent ARPES to study directly the orbital character of these bands and fully map out their dispersion. We observe bands in very good agreement with our cluster dynamical mean-field theory calculations. We show that the J=1/2 band, the closest to the Fermi level Ef, is dominated by dxz character along kx and dyz along ky. This is actually in agreement with an isotropic J=1/2 character on average, but this large orbital dependence in k-space was mostly overlooked before. It gives rise to strong modulations of the ARPES intensity that we explain and carefully take into account to compare dispersions in equivalent directions of the Brillouin zone. Although the latter dispersions look different at first, suggesting possible symmetry breakings, they are found essentially similar, once corrected for these intensity variations. In particular, the pseudogap-like features close to the $X$ point appearing in the nearly metallic 15% Rh-doped Sr2IrO4 strongly depend on experimental conditions. We reveal that there is nevertheless an energy scale of 30meV below which spectral weight is suppressed, independent of the experimental conditions, which gives a reliable basis to analyze this behavior. We suggest it is caused by disorder.

$5d$ iridium oxides are of huge interest due to the potential for new quantum states driven by strong spin-orbit coupling. The strontium iridate Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is particularly in the spotlight because of the so-called $j_\text{eff}=1/2$ state consisting of a quantum superposition of the three local $t_{2g}$ orbitals with -- in its most simple version -- nearly equal population, which stabilizes an unconventional Mott insulating state. Here, we report an anisotropic and aspherical magnetization density distribution measured by polarized neutron diffraction in a magnetic field up to 5~T at 4~K, which strongly deviates from a local \jeffHalf picture even when distortion-induced deviations from the equal weights of the orbital populations are taken into account. Once reconstructed by the maximum entropy method and multipole expansion model refinement, the magnetization density shows cross-shaped positive four lobes along the crystallographic tetragonal axes with a large spatial extent, showing that the $xy$ orbital contribution is dominant. In Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7, correlations, magnetism and spin-orbit coupling compete on similar energy scales, creating a new context to study metal-insulator transitions (MIT). We use here Angle-Resolved photoemission to investigate the MIT as a function of hole and electron doping in Sr3Ir2O7, obtained respectively by Ir/Rh and Sr/La substitutions. We show that there is a clear reduction as a function of doping of the gap between a lower and upper band on both sides of the Fermi level, from 0.2eV to 0.05eV. Although these two bands have a counterpart in band structure calculations, they are characterized by a very different degree of coherence. The upper band exhibits clear quasiparticle peaks, while the lower band is very broad and loses weight as a function of doping. Moreover, their ARPES spectral weights obey different periodicities, reinforcing the idea of their different nature. We argue that a very similar situation occurs in Sr2IrO4 and conclude that the physics of the two families is essentially the same.

Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is the archetype of the spin-orbit Mott insulator, but the nature of the metallic states that may emerge from this type of insulator is still not very well known. We study with angle-resolved photoemission the insulator-to-metal transition observed in Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_4$ when Ir is substituted by Rh (0.02 < $x$ < 0.35). The originality of the Rh doping is that Ir and Rh, which are formally isovalent, adopt different charge states, a rather unusual and inhomogeneous situation. We show that the evolution to the metallic state can be essentially understood as a shift of the Fermi level into the lower Hubbard band of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. The Mott gap appears quite insensitive to the introduction of up to $\sim$20\% holes in this band. The metallic phase, which forms for $x$ > 0.07, is not a Fermi liquid. It is characterized by the absence of quasiparticles, unrenormalized band dispersion compared to calculations and an $\sim$30-meV pseudo-gap on the entire Fermi surface.

Layered 5$d$ transition iridium oxides, Sr$_2$(Ir,Rh)O$_4$, are described as unconventional Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling. The undoped compound, Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, is a nearly ideal two-dimensional pseudospin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet, similarly to the insulating parent compound of high-temperature superconducting copper oxides. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we here report a hidden magnetic order in pure and doped Sr$_2$(Ir,Rh)O$_4$, distinct from the usual antiferromagnetic pseudo-spin ordering. We find that time-reversal symmetry is broken while the lattice translation invariance is preserved in the hidden order phase. The onset temperature matches that of the odd-parity hidden order recently highlighted using optical second harmonic generation experiments.
