The aim of this research was to study the aspects and conditions of physical space which favor or hinder the experience of university mentoring according to the perception of participants. During fieldwork, an ethnographic approach was used, based on direct and indirect observation reflected in research diaries, qualitative interviews, and an ad hoc questionnaire. A sample of 30 individuals was selected, including students and professor-mentors who were users of three spaces with different characteristics designed for individual and group mentoring. The data were collected analysed by identifying verbatim statements obtained from interviews and from accounts from the researchers' journals that were then coded and grouped into thematic categories. The results focus on the importance of factors such as natural light, comfort, accessibility, furnishings, and location; conditions such as privacy and silence; availability of materials and resources; and Internet connectivity. The participants preferred the closed space, with the open space in second place and the semi-open space third. As for other required characteristics, the preferred spaces are multi-functional and versatile, equipped with ICT tools and furniture that facilitates collaborative work and mentorship and close communication between mentor and student, and that provide necessary privacy and silence. Any spaces specifically created for mentorship should thus meet these specific criteria.

The rise of the student as prosumer (producer-consumer) of educational content is a novel development that has hitherto been the subject of very little research, especially in relation to the generation of digital contents and materials for online and hybrid education in particular. This article analyses whether there are patterns of behaviour and different perceptions associated with different groups of students in their role as producers and/or users in the field of active learning in hybrid university education systems. To this end, the research has been conducted with a group of engineering students at one of the largest blended learning universities in Europe. The results indicate higher levels of involvement in, and appreciation of, the experience in content producers compared with mere content consumers, but the students' environment and personal attitudes (such as their availability and degree of professional dedication) in relation to this type of education, the profile of which is often quite distinct from that of traditional learning, may differentiate their interest and appreciation of these activities, which are more creative and probably more demanding.

The purpose of this work is to identify contextual variables that help to explain the occupational aspirations of Spanish 15-year-old students. This is done by performing a secondary analysis of the PISA2018 test. Data have been analysed using decision trees introducing the students' expected occupational status as a dependent variable (DV), and the other items and indicators considered as predictors. The results show that the variables that contributed most to explaining DV were grade repetition, mastery goal orientation, enjoying reading and self-concept of reading. The findings of this exploratory work can be used as a basis for further studies aimed at establishing causal relationships between these variables and students' occupational aspirations.

TRP channels are important pharmacological targets in physiopathology. TRPV2 plays distinct roles in cardiac and neuromuscular function, immunity, and metabolism, and is associated with pathologies like muscular dystrophy and cancer. However, TRPV2 pharmacology is unspecific and scarce at best. Using in silico similarity-based chemoinformatics we obtained a set of 270 potential hits for TRPV2 categorized into families based on chemical nature and similarity. Docking the compounds on available rat TRPV2 structures allowed the clustering of drug families in specific ligand binding sites. Starting from a probenecid docking pose in the piperlongumine binding site and using a Gaussian accelerated molecular dynamics approach we have assigned a putative probenecid binding site. In parallel, we measured the EC50 of 7 probenecid derivatives on TRPV2 expressed in Pichia pastoris using a novel medium-throughput Ca2+ influx assay in yeast membranes together with an unbiased and unsupervised data analysis method. We found that 4-(piperidine-1-sulfonyl)-benzoic acid had a better EC50 than probenecid, which is one of the most specific TRPV2 agonists to date. Exploring the TRPV2-dependent anti-hypertensive potential in vivo, we found that 4-(piperidine-1-sulfonyl)-benzoic acid shows a sex-biased vasodilator effect producing larger vascular relaxations in female mice. Overall, this study expands the pharmacological toolbox for TRPV2, a widely expressed membrane protein and orphan drug target.

Summary Background The growing discussion on teacher development focuses on diversified educational skills that promote knowledge and innovation in the teaching, learning and assessment process. With the Covid-19 scenario, this picture of necessary changes has become more evident, demonstrating the need for professional preparation to work in teacher development. The aim of the study was to analyze the effectiveness of teacher development programs for the training of university teachers in the health area, through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods The systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and involved searching five databases - PubMed-Medline, Education Resource Information Center (ERIC), SCOPUS, Embase and Web of Science. The review included randomized clinical trials and cohort studies that addressed the effectiveness of teaching professionalization in the health area for university professors. The quality of the selected studies was assessed based on the evaluation criteria of the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. The random effects meta-analysis method was used to explain the distribution of effects between the studies, using Stata® software (version 11.0) and publication bias was examined by visual inspection of the graphs and Egger's test. Results We included 12 studies in the systematic review and 8 in the meta-analysis. These studies were published between 1984 and 2022 in 14 countries. Significant changes were reported in teachers' behavior to stimulate and encourage students, improvement in the quality of teaching and teaching staff, as well as improvement in skills such as leadership and self-evaluation. Furthermore, the result of the meta-analysis showed that there is evidence of the effectiveness of the positive effects of teacher development programs after their implementation, with this effect being 1.70% and an increase of 4.75 in the effect of these teacher development programs. Conclusion Our study shows that development programs have been implemented in different countries and contexts, all of which have proven to be effective in the short, medium and long term. We recommend that future research focus specifically on the different competencies that have been acquired following the implementation of these programs.

Academic failure and school dropout, or early school leaving, are two of the situations that most concern countries and educational institutions worldwide, because of their prevalence and also their economic and social implications. Despite this prominent role that academic failure and school dropout have in societies, there seems to be no consensus on the literature on their conceptualization, definition, and relationship. Moreover, it is frequent to observe how both concepts are confused or overlap in the scientific literature and how many authors avoid defining these constructs, using them indistinctly. Therefore, this work analyses whether educational research considers them as two different concepts or if they are used indistinctly. For this purpose, 2,051 keywords from 450 articles were subjected to a systematic review and classified into the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) thesaurus´ descriptors. The results reveal statistically significant differences in the descriptors according to the type of paper to which they correspond (academic failure or dropout). Thus, academic failure is associated with sociocultural, personal, and academic factors, while dropout is linked to employment and educational trajectories. These differences evidence that, although academic failure and school dropout refer to closely related educational problems, there are remarkable differences between them and between the treatment given to each of them in the scientific literature. Therefore, they should be considered as two different concepts. For all this, keyword analysis has proved to be a relevant element for the study of the structure of knowledge, allowing to clearly establish the differences between the two closely related concepts.

Objective: the applications of endoscopic ultrasonography have diversified over recent years. The possibility of reaching cardiac territory has been successfully explored in experimental models, opening up a new field of possibilities for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions that were unthinkable until very recently. The aims set out in this study are to evaluate cardiac anatomy, its approach, the safety of the experimental procedure and the resulting morphological and histological changes after the procedure. Material and methods: the study has been performed on two adult pigs. They have undergone different surgical approaches to the cardiac cavities and descending thoracic aorta with excellent results. Results: different cardiac structures have been identified and operated upon (right auricle, left auricle, left ventricle, cardiac valves), as well as major vessels. The use of contrast, both intracavitary and from a peripheral vein, enabled us to verify the anatomical spaces studied. During the procedures we monitored for arrhythmias, hemodynamic behavior, possibility of infection by obtaining sample hemocultures before and after procedures, and response to punctures. Conclusions: the present study has enabled us to evaluate access to the heart from the esophageal lumen using endoscopic ultrasonography, with results that are very similar to those described in the current bibliography. However, we offer two novelties: puncture of the right auricle through the interauricular partition and puncture of the descending thoracic aorta, both performed with ease and apparent safety.Objetivo: las aplicaciones de la ultrasonografía endoscópica se han diversificado en los últimos tiempos. La posibilidad de acceder al territorio cardiaco se ha explorado en modelos experimentales con buenos resultados, abriendo un campo de nuevas posibilidades de intervencionismo diagnóstico y terapéutico hasta hace poco impensables. Los objetivos planteados en este trabajo pretenden evaluar la anatomía cardiaca, su abordaje, la seguridad del procedimiento experimental y los cambios morfológicos e histológicos derivados. Material y métodos: se ha trabajado con dos animales adultos de la especie porcina a los que se han practicado diversos abordajes a cavidades cardiacas y aorta torácica descendente con excelentes resultados. Resultados: se han identificado y abordado diversas estructuras cardiacas (aurícula derecha, aurícula izquierda, ventrículo izquierdo, válvulas cardiacas) y grandes vasos. El uso de contraste intracavitario y desde una vía venosa periférica ha permitido asegurar los espacios anatómicos estudiados. Durante los procedimientos se ha monitorizado la aparición de arritmias, el comportamiento hemodinámico, la posibilidad de infección mediante la obtención de hemocultivos antes y después de aquellos y la respuesta a las punciones. Conclusiones: el presente trabajo nos ha permitido evaluar el acceso al corazón desde la luz esofágica mediante ultrasonografía endoscópica, con unos resultados muy similares a los observados en la literatura, ofreciendo dos novedades como la punción de la aurícula derecha a través del tabique interauricular y de la aorta torácica descendente, de forma fácil y aparentemente segura.

Abstract Breast cancer-related lymphedema is currently one of the most serious complications that most affect the quality of life of women undergoing breast cancer. The aim of this study was to explore in-depth the experience of women who suffer from lymphoedema after breast cancer and how does this condition affect corporeality, with no judgements. For this purpose, a qualitative methodology was followed. In-depth interviews, interviewer's field notes and participants' letters were used for data collection. The participants were twenty Spanish women with lymphoedema after overcome a breast cancer in the past. Healthcare specialists with experience in the topic were also included. Results showed 2 main categories: “From cancer to lymphedema, another disease another disease” and “Potential for transition and transformation towards a new way of life”. As a conclusion, the difficulty in accessing adequate treatment, the need for greater awareness of lymphedema and the importance of the emotional and psychological dimension of this chronic disease. Highlighting the attitudes that these women develop for self-care and the concept of new corporeality. After breast cancer, women with lymphedema experience a drastic change that affects all areas of their lives. The adaptation process, and the search for resources and aid, play a fundamental role in overcoming this process.

Abstract Here we present an improved, rapid method for filling quasi-nulls in symmetrical radiation patterns synthesized by equispaced linear arrays, leading to the generation of multiple solutions. Considering the polynomial representation of the pattern, this null-filling is achieved by displacing the roots radially off the unit circle, keeping a constant displacement. This allows analyzing how the potential solutions vary with the quasi-uniform filling and the associated directivity loss. This method is based on the Cardano-Vieta relations, which link the coefficients of a complex Schelkunoff polynomial with its roots. As examples of application, we have considered a 20/100 element Dolph-Chebyshev pattern, with a spacing between the elements $$\lambda / 2$$ λ / 2 , side lobe level of − 20/− 28 dB and three inner sidelobes at − 40/− 50 dB.

Aim: to evaluate the utility of double-balloon enteroscopy for small-bowel disease. Design: a prospective study of 50 consecutive enteroscopies performed from December 2004 to July 2005 to analyze diagnoses and treatments. Patients: 44 patients (33 had undergone a previous capsule endoscopy) with indications for obscure digestive hemorrhage, angiodysplasia, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, ulcer, suspected Crohn's disease, tumors, and refractory celiac disease. Results: we carried out enteroscopy studies in 44 patients by the oral route and, in 6 additional patients, by both the oral and anal routes. We reached the ileon with the oral route in all cases but one (jejunal stenosis), and in 4 cases out of 7 with the anal route, with an average duration of 73 minutes. We found angiodysplasia in 19 cases, as well as NSAID-related enteropathy, Crohn's disease, diverticulosis, and Waldenström's disease. We performed biopsies in 31% of cases with diagnoses of adenocarcinoma, lymphangiectasia secondary to tumor in celiac disease, and Whipple's disease. We treated 19 patients with angiodysplasia (1 to 20 synchronous lesions) with argon, and 4 patients with polyps using polipectomy (sporadic polyps or Peutz-Jeghers syndrome). A retained capsule in one patient with stenosis was removed. Conclusions: double-balloon enteroscopy is a useful and effective technique in the diagnosis and treatment of small intestine diseases, thus complementing capsule endoscopy. More studies are needed to analyze its impact on the management of this condition.Objetivo: valorar la utilidad de la enteroscopia de doble balón en enfermedades de intestino delgado. Diseño: estudio prospectivo descriptivo de 50 enteroscopias consecutivas (diciembre 2004 a julio 2005), analizando diagnóstico y terapéutica. Pacientes: cuarenta y cuatro pacientes (33 con cápsula endoscópica previa) con hemorragia digestiva oculta o lesiones detectadas mediante cápsula (angiodisplasias, pólipos, úlceras, enfermedad de Crohn, celiaca refractaria y tumores). Resultados: se realizó enteroscopia vía oral a 44 pacientes y vía oral más anal a 6. Por vía oral se progresó hasta íleon en todos los casos excepto uno (estenosis yeyunal), por vía anal en 4 de 7 (3 casos con dificultad de paso por Bahuin). La duración media fue 73 minutos. Se detectaron angiodisplasias (19 casos), úlceras en enteropatía por AINE, enfermedad de Crohn, enfermedad de Waldenström, y divertículos. Se realizaron biopsias en yeyuno-íleon en un tercio de los casos (adenocarcinoma, linfangiectasias secundarias a tumor sobre celíaca, enfermedad de Whipple). Se realizó terapéutica con argón a 19 pacientes con angiodisplasias (1 a 20 lesiones), polipectomía a 4 pacientes con pólipos esporádicos o Peutz Jeghers (1 a 15 pólipos) y se extrajo una cápsula endoscópica retenida en una estenosis. Conclusiones: la enteroscopia de doble balón es una técnica útil y eficaz en el diagnóstico y tratamiento de las lesiones del intestino delgado, complementando a la cápsula endoscópica. Hacen falta más estudios para analizar el impacto esperado en el cambio del manejo de estos pacientes.

La presente investigación examina, a través de un análisis de contenido, los rasgos de las fake news difundidas en España sobre la guerra Israel-Hamás y registradas en las plataformas de verificación Maldita.es, Newtral, Efe Verifica, Verificat e Infoveritas entre el 7 de octubre de 2023 y el 7 de marzo de 2024, es decir, los primeros cinco meses del conflicto (n=232). Se detecta el protagonismo de los elementos audiovisuales en estos mensajes —difundidos principalmente a través de X— con el fin de dotar de una mayor verosimilitud al relato. También se percibe un fin eminentemente ideológico y una ausencia mayoritaria de fuentes identificadas, así como la descontextualización de la información. Predominan los bulos sobre ataques, bombardeos y muertes de civiles, la mayoría referidos a ofensivas de Israel contra Gaza. Para la verificación de estos contenidos, los fact-checkers recurren a un amplio repertorio de recursos y herramientas principalmente digitales.

Nanoparticle uptake by cells is a key parameter in their performance in biomedical applications. However, the use of quantitative, non-destructive techniques to obtain the amount of nanoparticles internalized by cells is still uncommon. We have studied the cellular uptake and the toxicity of core-shell maghemite-silica magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), with a core diameter of 9 nm and a shell thickness of 3 nm. The internalization of the nanoparticles by mouse neuroblastoma 2a cells was evaluated by sensitive and non-destructive Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) magnetometry and corroborated by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy. We were thus able to study the toxicity of the nanoparticles for well-quantified MNP uptake in terms of nanoparticle density within the cell. No significant variation in cell viability or growth rate was detected for any tested exposure. Yet, an increase in both the amount of mitochondrial superoxide and in the lysosomal activity was detected for the highest concentration (100 μg ml−1) and incubation time (24 h), suggesting the onset of a disruption in ROS homeostasis, which may lead to an impairment in antioxidant responses. Our results validate SQUID magnetometry as a sensitive technique to quantify MNP uptake and demonstrate the non-toxic nature of these core-shell MNPs under our culture conditions.

La situación generada por la Primera Guerra Mundial provocó la aparición de múltiples organizaciones destinadas a la población civil cuya acción humanitaria se desarrolló a nivel transnacional. Estas acciones se desarrollaron, también, como herramientas de influencia política apoyadas en los medios de comunicación de masas, en las que se involucraron intelectuales progresistas que facilitaron la movilización de amplias capas sociales. El Socorro Obrero Internacional estableció filiales en numerosos países con el doble objetivo de realizar acciones propagandísticas mientras desarrollaba acciones de apoyo a los obreros y sus familias, facilitando recursos en períodos de huelga, estableciendo comedores, hogares para niños o escuelas. La lucha contra el fascismo facilitó que se involucraran cineastas, fotógrafos, escritores, pintores, etc. en la elaboración y difusión de mensajes apoyados frecuentemente en imágenes que permitieron establecer los puentes emocionales adecuados para la creación de una red de intelectuales antifascistas, activa durante en el período de entreguerras y la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El objetivo del artículo es explorar las organizaciones y circunstancias que precedieron a esta red desde un enfoque transnacional y diacrónico que parte del concepto de solidaridad internacional y de sus implicaciones políticas. Para el estudio se han revisado publicaciones y archivos de las organizaciones cinematográficas vinculadas, así como los escritos realizados por Willy Münzemberg relacionados con la propaganda. Como resultado, los mensajes y las imágenes compartidas y difundidas en los medios de comunicación permitieron moldear la opinión, establecer emociones compartidas que facilitaron la movilización humanitaria y sirvieron de justificación ideológica y cultural.

Abstract Background Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) is one of the most prevalent viruses affecting melon worldwide. Recessive resistance to WMV in melon has previously been reported in the African accession TGR-1551. Moreover, the genomic regions associated to the resistance have also been described. Nevertheless, the transcriptomic response that might infer the resistance to this potyvirus has not been explored. Results We have performed a comparative transcriptomic analysis using mock and WMV-inoculated plants of the susceptible cultivar “Bola de oro” (BO) and a resistant RIL (Recombinant inbred line) derived from the initial cross between “TGR-1551” and BO. In total, 616 genes were identified as differentially expressed and the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) detected 19 gene clusters (GCs), of which 7 were differentially expressed for the genotype x treatment interaction term. SNPs with a predicted high impact on the protein function were detected within the coding regions of most of the detected DEGs. Moreover, 3 and 16 DEGs were detected within the QTL regions previously described in chromosomes 11 and 5, respectively. In addition to these two specific genomic regions, we also observde large transcriptomic changes from genes spread across the genome in the resistant plants in response to the virus infection. This early response against WMV implied genes involved in plant-pathogen interaction, plant hormone signal transduction, the MAPK signaling pathway or ubiquitin mediated proteolysis, in detriment to the photosynthetic and basal metabolites pathways. Moreover, the gene MELO3C021395, which coded a mediator of RNA polymerase II transcription subunit 33A (MED33A), has been proposed as the candidate gene located on chromosome 11 conferring resistance to WMV. Conclusions The comparative transcriptomic analysis presented here showed that, even though the resistance to WMV in TGR-1551 has a recessive nature, it triggers an active defense response at a transcriptomic level, which involves broad-spectrum resistance mechanisms. Thus, this study represents a step forward on our understanding of the mechanisms underlaying WMV resistance in melon. In addition, it sheds light into a broader topic on the mechanisms of recessive resistances.

En 1958 Eduardo Chillida recibe una beca de la Fundación Graham de Chicago en la que es alentado a profundizar en los aspectos de su trabajo más cercanos a la disciplina arquitectónica. Detrás de esta beca se encontraban figuras imprescindibles para la difusión de los valores de la arquitectura moderna en América como Mies van der Rohe, Sigfreid Giedion o Josep Lluis Sert. La obra de Chillida evidencia un paso de los Ikaraundi, que comienzan en 1957, hasta las obras que se interesan decididamente por los fenómenos espaciales (los Elogios de la arquitectura o los Lugares de encuentro) a finales de los 60. Este año de beca hace de bisagra y de acercamiento al campo de la arquitectura como él mismo reconoce en el informe que redactará para la recepción de la misma. Este capítulo de su biografía ha sido hasta ahora apenas considerado para explicar este giro tan trascendental en su carrera. Abstract In 1958 Eduardo Chillida received a scholarship from the Graham Foundation of Chicago in which he was encouraged to explore deeper into those aspects of his work that are closest to the architectural discipline. Behind this scholarship there were essential figures for the dissemination of the values of modern architecture in America such as Mies van der Rohe, Sigfreid Giedion or Josep Lluis Sert. Chillida's work shows a step from the Ikaraundi, which began in 1957, to the works that are decidedly interested in spatial phenomena (the Praise of Architecture or the Meeting Places) at the end of the 60s. This year of scholarship of hinge and approach to the field of architecture as he himself recognizes in the report that he will write for its reception. This chapter of his biography has until now barely been considered to explain this momentous turn in his career.
