Abstract

In this paper, we prove two lower bounds for the maximum matching size in an arbitrary undirected graph. Despite their simplicity, these results are not widely known. This article aims to bring pleasure to the reader by giving short combinatorial proofs of these easy-to-state estimates.

Abstract

The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

Abstract

We present the study of the decay $J/\psi \rightarrow \rho\pi$. The results are based on of 5.2~million $J/\psi$ events collected by the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M collider. The branching fractions are measured to be $\B(J/\psi \rightarrow \rho\pi) = \big(2.072\pm 0.017 \pm 0.062 \big)\cdot 10^{-2}$ and $\B(J/\psi \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0) = \big(1.878 \pm 0.013 \pm 0.051 \big)\cdot 10^{-2}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Our results are more precise than the previous relative measurements.

5. Feynman checkers: number-theoretic properties

Abstract

We study Feynman checkers, an elementary model of electron motion introduced by R. Feynman. In this model, a checker moves on a checkerboard, and we count the turns. Feynman checkers are also known as a one-dimensional quantum walk. We prove some new number-theoretic results in this model, for example, sign alternation of the real and imaginary parts of the electron wave function in a specific area. All our results can be stated in terms of Young diagrams, namely, we compare the number of Young diagrams with an odd and an even number of steps.

Abstract

Excellent particle identification (PID) will be essential for the PANDA experiment at FAIR. The Barrel DIRC will separate kaons and pions with at least 3 s.d. for momenta up to 3.5 GeV/c and polar angles between 22 and 140 deg. After successful validation of the final design in the CERN PS/T9 beam line, the tendering process for the two most time- and cost-intensive items, radiator bars and MCP-PMTs, started in 2018. In Sep. 2019 Nikon was selected to build the fused silica bars and successfully completed the series production of 112 bars in Feb. 2021. Measurements of the mechanical quality of the bars were performed by Nikon and the optical quality was evaluated at GSI. In Dec. 2020, the contract for the fabrication of the MCP-PMTs was awarded to PHOTONIS and the delivery of the first-of-series MCP-PMTs is expected in July 2021. Abstract

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $\overline{\rm P}$ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton-nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the \textit{Phase One} setup. Abstract

The PANDA experiment at the FAIR facility adresses open questions in hadron physics with antiproton beams in the momentum range of 1.5-15 GeV/c. The antiprotons are stored and cooled in a High Energy Storage RING (HESR) with a momentum spread down to Dp/p = 4*10^-5. A high luminosity of up to 2*10^32 cm-2 s-1 can be achieved. An excellent hadronic particle identification (PID) will be provided by two Cherenkov detectors using the priciple of Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC). In the forward direction from polar angles of 5 degree to 22 degree, the Endcap Disc DIRC (EDD) separates pions from kaons up to momenta of 4 GeV/c. Between 22 degree and 140 degree the Barrel DIRC cleanly separates pions from kaons for momenta up to 3.5 GeV/c. Abstract

PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2x10^32 cm^2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5{\deg} to 22{\deg} and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA Disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment (HEP) before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. Abstract

The present work continues a series of the KEDR measurements of the $R$ value that started in 2010 at the VEPP-4M $e^+e^-$ collider. By combining new data with our previous results in this energy range we measured the values of $R_{\text{uds}}$ and $R$ at nine center-of-mass energies between 3.08 and 3.72 GeV. The total accuracy is about or better than $2.6\%$ at most of energy points with a systematic uncertainty of about $1.9\%$. Together with the previous precise $R$ measurement at KEDR in the energy range 1.84-3.05 GeV, it constitutes the most detailed high-precision $R$ measurement near the charmonium production threshold., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1610.02827 and substantial text overlap with arXiv:1510.02667

Abstract Using the 1.32 $$\hbox {pb}^{-1}$$ pb - 1 statistics collected at the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ peak with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M $$e^{+}e^{-\, }$$ e + e - collider, we measured the branching fractions of $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ meson decays to the final states 2( $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-})\pi ^{0}$$ π + π - ) π 0 , $$K^{+}K^{-}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}\pi ^{0}$$ K + K - π + π - π 0 , 2( $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-})$$ π + π - ) and $$K^{+}K^{-}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ K + K - π + π - . The results obtained for the decays $$J/\psi \rightarrow $$ J / ψ → 2( $$\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-})\pi ^{0}$$ π + π - ) π 0 , $$J/\psi \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}\pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}\pi ^{0}$$ J / ψ → K + K - π + π - π 0 contradict the measurements performed by other groups in the last century, but agree well with recent results of BABAR and BESIII collaborations.

Abstract

The product of the electronic width of the $\psi(2S)$ meson and the branching fraction of its decay to the muon pair was measured in the $e^{+}e^{-} \to \psi(2S) \to \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ process using nine data sets corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 6.5 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M electron-positron collider: \[ \Gamma_{ee}\times\mathcal{B}_{\mu\mu} = 19.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.5 ~\text{eV}. \] Adding the previous KEDR results on hadronic and leptonic channels, the values of the $\psi(2S)$ electronic width were obtained under two assumptions: either with the assumption of lepton universality \[ \Gamma_{ee} = 2.279 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.042 ~\text{keV} \] or without it, summing up hadronic and three independent leptonic channels: \[ \Gamma_{ee} = 2.282 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.042 ~\text{keV}. \]

Abstract

Using the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M $e^+e^-$ collider, we have determined the values of $R$ at thirteen points of the center-of-mass energy between 1.84 and 3.05 GeV. The achieved accuracy is about or better than $3.9\%$ at most of the energy points with a systematic uncertainty less than $2.4\%$.

Abstract

The exclusive charmonium production process in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation with an associated $\pi^0$ meson $\bar{p}p\to J/\psi\pi^0$ is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the $J/\psi\to e^+e^-$ decay channel with the PANDA (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the $\bar{p}p\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $\bar{p}p\to J/\psi\pi^0\pi^0$ reactions are performed with PandaRoot, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at PANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

The native oxide at the surface of III-V nanowires, such as InAs, can be a major source of charge noise and scattering in nanowire-based electronics, particularly for quantum devices operated at low temperatures. Surface passivation provides a means to remove the native oxide and prevent its regrowth. Here, we study the effects of surface passivation and conformal dielectric deposition by measuring electrical conductance through nanowire field effect transistors treated with a variety of surface preparations. By extracting field effect mobility, subthreshold swing, threshold shift with temperature, and the gate hysteresis for each device, we infer the relative effects of the different treatments on the factors influencing transport. It is found that a combination of chemical passivation followed by deposition of an aluminum oxide dielectric shell yields the best results compared to the other treatments, and comparable to untreated nanowires. Finally, it is shown that an entrenched, top-gated device using an optimally treated nanowire can successfully form a stable double quantum dot at low temperatures. Abstract

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to \pi^+ \pi^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Abstract

Using the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M $e^+e^-$ collider, we have measured the values of $R_{\text{uds}}$ and $R$ at seven points of the center-of-mass energy between 3.12 and 3.72 GeV. The total achieved accuracy is about or better than $3.3\%$ at most of energy points with a systematic uncertainty of about $2.1\%$. At the moment it is the most accurate measurement of $R(s)$ in this energy range.

Abstract

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,062 new measurements from 721 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 117 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including those on Pentaquarks and Inflation. The complete Review is published online in a journal and on the website of the Particle Data Group (http://pdg.lbl.gov). The printed PDG Book contains the Summary Tables and all review articles but no longer includes the detailed tables from the Particle Listings. A Booklet with the Summary Tables and abbreviated versions of some of the review articles is also available.

Abstract

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($\pi N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ reaction with the future \={P}ANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $\pi N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ with the \={P}ANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to \pi^+\pi^- \pi^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos\theta_{\pi^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the \={P}ANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Abstract

Long Pulse Scenarios (LPS) in ITER foreseen during the Pre-Fusion Power Operation (PFPO) phase of the ITER Research Plan (IRP) are assessed using 1.5D transport simulations within the ASTRA framework. Such assessment is required to predict the operational space for LPS operation in PFPO, as well as to evaluate which physics processes for LPS operation during Fusion Power Operation (FPO) could be studied during PFPO. An important aspect in the development of LPSs in PFPO is to minimize lifetime consumption of the Central Solenoid (CS) for these scenarios. The maximum pulse length achievable for LPSs in PFPO with no consumption of CS lifetime (currents in CS coils ⩽30 kA per turn) has been assessed for a range of heating schemes and heating mixes, confinement regimes (L-mode and H-mode) and for helium and hydrogen plasmas. The operational space of LPS and pulse length has been explored through density scans with the Heating and Current Drive mix required for the FPO Q ⩾ 5 steady-state plasma scenario (namely Neutral Beam Injection and Electron Cyclotron Heating) including acceptable shine through losses on the first wall for both helium and hydrogen plasmas. Fast particle physics aspects that are common between FPO plasmas and LPS PFPO H-mode plasmas at low densities are studied including MHD stability analysis with the KINX code and non-perturbative critical gradient model based on high-n Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes (TAE) stability kinetic ballooning code HINST calculations.

Abstract

Symmetry breaking is a central concept of Landau phase transition theory, which, however, only considers time-averaged static symmetry of crystal lattice while neglects dynamic symmetry of lattice vibrations thus fails to explain the ubiquitous transformation precursor phenomena. We show that incomplete phonon softening prior to phase transformation leads to dynamic symmetry breaking, whose natural consequences manifest as various precursor "anomalies" that have been difficult to understand from traditional theory. Our experimental observation of heterogeneous phonon domains in high-static-symmetry austenite phase of thermoelastic Ni-Mn-Ga single crystals before martensitic transformation by using three-dimensional synchrotron X-ray phonon diffuse scattering confirms the idea of dynamic symmetry breaking. It provides a natural mechanism and physical understanding of ubiquitous phase transition precursor phenomena in metals, alloys and ceramics., Comment: 10 pages including 3 figures

Abstract

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,283 new measurements from 899 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as heavy neutrinos, supersymmetric and technicolor particles, axions, dark photons, etc. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Supersymmetry, Extra Dimensions, Particle Detectors, Probability, and Statistics. Among the 112 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised including those on: Dark Energy, Higgs Boson Physics, Electroweak Model, Neutrino Cross Section Measurements, Monte Carlo Neutrino Generators, Top Quark, Dark Matter, Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking, Accelerator Physics of Colliders, High-Energy Collider Parameters, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, Astrophysical Constants and Cosmological Parameters. Abstract

It is argued that the CODATA recommended values of the fundamental physical constants could not be used as the reference data in searching the hypothetical space-time variations of the fundamental physical constants. It is shown that the CODATA data permanently suffers a loss of self-consistency of the released data due to unjustified over-rounding of their estimates. The simple estimates of the critical numbers of decimal digits that should be saved in the independently rounded correlation coefficients, the average values and uncertainties to save the self-consistency is obtained. The set of high level quality requirements to the computerized presentation of the numerical data on the jointly measured or estimated physical values are formulated. Abstract

Nowadays, scientific databases have become the bread-and-butter of particle physicists. These databases must be maintained and checked repeatedly to insure the accuracy of their content. The COMPETE collaboration aims at motivating data maintenance via the interfacing of theory and experiment at the database level. The database concept then needs to be supplemented by a "model-base". Such an object enables one not only to decide what the best description may be, but also to discern what potential problems exist in the data. The systematization of such a cross-fertilization between models and data results in the "object of knowledge" that is the point at which all existing information resources on a given problem could converge. There are many advantages to such a global approach. First of all, the maintenance of a data set is not a static task: it needs to be motivated by physics. The second advantage is that one can have a common testing ground for theories and models. Thirdly, an extensive theoretical database can be used to plan new experiments and to predict various quantities. Finally, as new data come in, one can very quickly decide on their theoretical impact, and hence immediately evaluate the need for new physics ideas. As we want to treat a large amount of data and many models, computer technology constitutes an important part of our activity. We have concentrated on the elaboration of artificial intelligence decision-making algorithms, as well as on the delivery of computer tools for the end-user. Abstract

We present predictions on the total cross sections and on the ratio of the real part to the imaginary part of the elastic amplitude (rho parameter) for present and future pp and pbar p colliders, and on total cross sections for gamma p -> hadrons at cosmic-ray energies and for gamma gamma -> hadrons up to sqrt(s)=1 TeV. These predictions are based on a study of many possible analytic parametrisations and invoke the current hadronic dataset at t=0. Abstract

We consider several classes of analytic parametrizations of hadronic scattering amplitudes, and compare their predictions to all available forward data in hadron-hadron, gamma-p and gamma-gamma reactions. Although these parametrizations are very close for SQRTs larger than 9 GeV, it turns out that they differ markedly at low energy, where a universal Pomeron term like ln**2 s enables one to extend the fit down to SQRTs equal to 4 GeV. We present predictions on the total cross sections and on the ratio of the real part to the imaginary part of the elastic amplitude (RHO parameter) for present and future pp and antipp colliders, and on total cross sections for gamma-p into hadrons at cosmic-ray energies and for gamma-gamma into hadrons up to SQRTs equal to 1 TeV., Comment: 3 pages, 3 tables. Abstract

Abstract

We report on fits of a large class of analytic amplitude models for forward scattering against the comprehensive data for all available reactions. To differentiate the goodness of the fits of many possible parametrizations to a large sample of data, we developed and used a set of quantitative indicators measuring statistical quality of the fits over and beyond the typical criterion of the $\Chi^2 /dof$. Abstract

This biennial Review summarizes much of Particle Physics. Using data from previous editions, plus 2205 new measurements from 667 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We also summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as Higgs bosons, heavy neutrinos, and supersymmetric particles. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as the Standard Model, particle detectors, probability, and statistics. This edition features expanded coverage of CP violation in B mesons and of neutrino oscillations. For the first time we cover searches for evidence of extra dimensions (both in the particle listings and in a new review). Another new review is on Grand Unified Theories. A booklet is available containing the Summary Tables and abbreviated versions of some of the other sections of this full Review. 48. The role of genetic and biological features of plants in the formation of the sugar beet harvest at different sowing times

Abstract

This article studied the influence of sowing dates of various biological forms of sugar beet on the productivity of root crops in specific soil and climatic conditions. The role of sowing dates on seed germination, the dynamics of the formation and drying of sugar beet leaves, the number of functioning leaves during the growing season, as well as the dynamics of the growth of the leaf surface area of sugar beets depending on varietal characteristics and sowing dates are shown. Both the lack and the excess of any factor negatively affect the productivity of plants. Therefore, when developing agricultural techniques for crop cultivation, it is important to take into account the timing of sowing, the specifics of the action of mineral fertilizers, the genetic properties of hybrids, climatic and weather conditions, soils, states of organogenesis, phases and interphase periods of plant growth and development. Operational management of the process of crop formation, taking into account varietal characteristics, during the growing season by selecting the appropriate agrotechnical measures and the terms of their implementation should be carried out taking into account the state of crops and meteorological conditions. The scientific basis for agrotechnical measures is the theory of the dynamics of crop formation. It was established that during the early sowing period, the reserves of productive moisture and nutrient reserves in the soil in the first half of the growing season are greater than in the later ones, which ensures the rapid development of the root system, the growth of the leaf surface, the increase in the mass of root crops and the accumulation of sugar in them. The highest yield of root crops and sugar yield per hectare was obtained when sowing triploid hybrid Okhtyrskyi and diploid hybrid ICB 0902 during the first sowing periods. Sowing beets five days later reduced yield by 3.8 t/ha and sugar content by 0.1 %. Late sowing dates sharply reduced the yield and sugar content of root crops.
