For the almost complete intersection ideals $(x_1^2, \dots, x_n^2, (x_1 + \cdots + x_n)^k)$, we compute their reduced Gr\"obner basis for any term ordering, revealing a combinatorial structure linked to lattice paths, elementary symmetric polynomials, and Catalan numbers. Using this structure, we classify the weak Lefschetz property for these ideals. Additionally, we provide a new proof of the well-known result that the squarefree algebra satisfies the strong Lefschetz property. Finally, we compute the Betti numbers of the initial ideals and construct a minimal free resolution using a Mayer-Vietoris tree approach., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures

The recent direct detection of neutrinos at the LHC has opened a new window on high-energy particle physics and highlighted the potential of forward physics for groundbreaking discoveries. In the last year, the physics case for forward physics has continued to grow, and there has been extensive work on defining the Forward Physics Facility and its experiments to realize this physics potential in a timely and cost-effective manner. Following a 2-page Executive Summary, we present the status of the FPF, beginning with the FPF's unique potential to shed light on dark matter, new particles, neutrino physics, QCD, and astroparticle physics. We summarize the current designs for the Facility and its experiments, FASER2, FASER$\nu$2, FORMOSA, and FLArE, and conclude by discussing international partnerships and organization, and the FPF's schedule, budget, and technical coordination., Comment: 32 pages

This document is comprised of a collection of updated preliminary parameters for the key parts of the muon collider. The updated preliminary parameters follow on from the October 2023 Tentative Parameters Report. Particular attention has been given to regions of the facility that are believed to hold greater technical uncertainty in their design and that have a strong impact on the cost and power consumption of the facility. The data is collected from a collaborative spreadsheet and transferred to overleaf.

In molecular systems, the ultrafast motion of electrons initiates the process of chemical change. Tracking this electronic motion across molecules requires coupling attosecond time resolution to atomic-scale spatial sensitivity. In this work, we employ a pair of attosecond x-ray pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser to follow electron motion resulting from the sudden removal of an electron from a prototypical aromatic system, para-aminophenol. X-ray absorption enables tracking this motion with atomic-site specificity. Our measurements are compared with state-of-the-art computational modeling, reproducing the observed response across multiple timescales. Sub-femtosecond dynamics are assigned to states undergoing non-radiative decay, while few-femtosecond oscillatory motion is associated with electronic wavepacket motion in stable cation states, that will eventually couple to nuclear motion. Our work provides insight on the ultrafast charge motion preceding and initiating chemical transformations in moderately complex systems, and provides a powerful benchmark for computational models of ultrafast charge motion in matter.

We construct an algorithm to compute the $\varphi$-Selmer group of the elliptic curve $E_b: y^2 = x^3 + b x$ over $\mathbb{Q}(i)$, where $b \in \mathbb{Z}[i]$ and $\varphi$ is a degree 2 isogeny of $E_b$. We associate to $E_b$ a weighted graph $G_b$, whose vertices are the odd Gaussian primes dividing $b$, with the edge weight between two vertices determined by the quartic Legendre symbol of these primes. A bijection is established between elements of the $\varphi$-Selmer group of $E_b$ and certain partitions of $G_b$, leading to a linear-algebraic interpretation of the $\varphi$-Selmer group via the Laplacian matrix of $G_b$. This enables efficient computation of $S^{(\varphi)}(E_b/\mathbb{Q}(i))$ for any $b \in \mathbb{Z}[i]$. We then analyze the case where $b$ is a square in $\mathbb{Z}[i]$, showing that $\# S^{(\varphi)}(E_b/\mathbb{Q}(i))$ depends only on the rank of the Laplacian $L(G_b)$ in this case. Finally, we implement our algorithm to compute the distribution of $\# S^{(\varphi)}(E_b/\mathbb{Q}(i))$ for the first 10,000 curves $E_b$., Comment: 24 pages, 2 figures

The first FASER search for a light, long-lived particle decaying into a pair of photons is reported. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6~\text{TeV}$ collected in 2022 and 2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $57.7\text{fb}^{-1}$. A model with axion-like particles (ALPs) dominantly coupled to weak gauge bosons is the primary target. Signal events are characterised by high-energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and no signal in the veto scintillators. One event is observed, compared to a background expectation of $0.44 \pm 0.39$ events, which is entirely dominated by neutrino interactions. World-leading constraints on ALPs are obtained for masses up to $300~\text{MeV}$ and couplings to the Standard Model W gauge boson, $g_{aWW}$, around $10^{-4}$ GeV$^{-1}$, testing a previously unexplored region of parameter space. Other new particle models that lead to the same experimental signature, including ALPs coupled to gluons or photons, U(1)$_B$ gauge bosons, up-philic scalars, and a Type-I two-Higgs doublet model, are also considered for interpretation, and new constraints on previously viable parameter space are presented in this paper., Comment: 37 pages, 22 figures

In the general pattern formation (GPF) problem, a swarm of simple autonomous, disoriented robots must form a given pattern. The robots' simplicity imply a strong limitation: When the initial configuration is rotationally symmetric, only patterns with a similar symmetry can be formed [Yamashita, Suzyuki; TCS 2010]. The only known algorithm to form large patterns with limited visibility and without memory requires the robots to start in a near-gathering (a swarm of constant diameter) [Hahn et al.; SAND 2024]. However, not only do we not know any near-gathering algorithm guaranteed to preserve symmetry but most natural gathering strategies trivially increase symmetries [Castenow et al.; OPODIS 2022]. Thus, we study near-gathering without changing the swarm's rotational symmetry for disoriented, oblivious robots with limited visibility (the OBLOT-model, see [Flocchini et al.; 2019]). We introduce a technique based on the theory of dynamical systems to analyze how a given algorithm affects symmetry and provide sufficient conditions for symmetry preservation. Until now, it was unknown whether the considered OBLOT-model allows for any non-trivial algorithm that always preserves symmetry. Our first result shows that a variant of Go-to-the-Average always preserves symmetry but may sometimes lead to multiple, unconnected near-gathering clusters. Our second result is a symmetry-preserving near-gathering algorithm that works on swarms with a convex boundary (the outer boundary of the unit disc graph) and without holes (circles of diameter 1 inside the boundary without any robots).

Since the invention of the laser nonlinear effects such as filamentation, Rabi-cycling and collective emission have been explored in the optical regime leading to a wide range of scientific and industrial applications. X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) have led to the extension of many optical techniques to X-rays for their advantages of angstrom scale spatial resolution and elemental specificity. One such example is XFEL driven population inversion of 1s core hole states resulting in inner-shell K${\alpha}$ (2p to 1s) X-ray lasing in elements ranging from neon to copper, which has been utilized for nonlinear spectroscopy and development of next generation X-ray laser sources. Here we show that strong lasing effects, similar to those observed in the optical regime, can occur at 1.5 to 2.1 angstrom wavelengths during high intensity (> ${10^{19}}$ W/cm${^{2}}$) XFEL driven inner-shell lasing and superfluorescence of copper and manganese. Depending on the temporal substructure of the XFEL pump pulses, the resulting inner-shell X-ray laser pulses can exhibit strong spatial inhomogeneities as well as spectral inhomogeneities and broadening. Through 3D Maxwell Bloch theory we show that the observed spatial inhomogeneities result from X-ray filamentation, and that the spectral broadening is driven by Rabi cycling with sub-femtosecond periods. These findings indicate that we have generated Angstrom-wavelength x-ray pulses (containing ${10^{6}}$ - ${10^{8}}$ photons) in the strong lasing regime, some of them with pulse lengths of less than 100 attoseconds.

This paper proposes an approach facilitating co-design of causal graphs between subject matter experts and statistical modellers. Modern causal analysis starting with formulation of causal graphs provides benefits for robust analysis and well-grounded decision support. Moreover, this process can enrich the discovery and planning phase of data science projects. The key premise is that plotting relevant statistical information on a causal graph structure can facilitate an intuitive discussion between domain experts and modellers. Furthermore, Hand-crafting causality graphs, integrating human expertise with robust statistical methodology, enables ensuring responsible AI practices. The paper focuses on using multiplicity-adjusted p-values, controlling for the false discovery rate (FDR), as an aid for co-designing the graph. A family of hypotheses relevant to causal graph construction is identified, including assessing correlation strengths, directions of causal effects, and how well an estimated structural causal model induces the observed covariance structure. An iterative flow is described where an initial causal graph is drafted based on expert beliefs about likely causal relationships. The subject matter expert's beliefs, communicated as ranked scores could be incorporated into the control of the measure proposed by Benjamini and Kling, the FDCR (False Discovery Cost Rate). The FDCR-adjusted p-values then provide feedback on which parts of the graph are supported or contradicted by the data. Proton-proton collisions at energy-frontier facilities produce an intense flux of high-energy light particles, including neutrinos, in the forward direction. At the LHC, these particles are currently being studied with the far-forward experiments FASER/FASER$\nu$ and SND@LHC, while new dedicated experiments have been proposed in the context of a Forward Physics Facility (FPF) operating at the HL-LHC. Here we present a first quantitative exploration of the reach for neutrino, QCD, and BSM physics of far-forward experiments integrated within the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) project as part of its proton-proton collision program (FCC-hh) at $\sqrt{s} \simeq 100$ TeV. We find that $10^9$ electron/muon neutrinos and $10^7$ tau neutrinos could be detected, an increase of several orders of magnitude compared to (HL-)LHC yields. We study the impact of neutrino DIS measurements at the FPF@FCC to constrain the unpolarised and spin partonic structure of the nucleon and assess their sensitivity to nuclear dynamics down to $x \sim 10^{-9}$ with neutrinos produced in proton-lead collisions. We demonstrate that the FPF@FCC could measure the neutrino charge radius for $\nu_{e}$ and $\nu_\mu$ and reach down to five times the SM value for $\nu_\tau$. We fingerprint the BSM sensitivity of the FPF@FCC for a variety of models, including dark Higgs bosons, relaxion-type scenarios, quirks, and millicharged particles, finding that these experiments would be able to discover LLPs with masses as large as 50 GeV and couplings as small as $10^{-8}$, and quirks with masses up to 10 TeV. Our study highlights the remarkable opportunities made possible by integrating far-forward experiments into the FCC project, and it provides new motivation for the FPF at the HL-LHC as an essential precedent to optimize the forward physics experiments that will enable the FCC to achieve its full physics potential.

We develop a model describing long-range atom-atom interactions in a two-dimensional periodic or aperiodic lattice of optical centers inside a solid-state host material. We consider realistic environmental and technical conditions such as frequency and position broadening. Even when considering a significant frequency broadening in the ensemble (approximately 300 GHz), we observe up to a three-fold increase in directional scattering from the resonant lattice in a system. The model can be used to scalably design quantum optical elements, e.g. a quantum lens, harnessing atomistic engineering (e.g. via ion implantation) of collective interactions in materials to enhance quantum properties., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

If the quantum mechanical recoil of the electron due to its scattering from the undulator and laser fields dominates the dynamics, a regime of the free-electron laser emerges where quantum effects lead to a drastic change in the radiation properties. However, the large interaction length required for a single-pass quantum free-electron laser impedes the experimental realization. The quantum free-electron laser oscillator, proposed in the present article, is a possible scheme to resolve this issue. Here we show that this device features a photon statistics that is closer to a coherent state in comparison to existing classical free-electron lasers. The device can be even operated in such a way that a sub-Poissonian statistics is obtained. Beside the benefit of demonstrating this pure quantum effect, the narrowing of the photon distribution implies reduced intensity fluctuations of the emitted radiation, which in turn lead to decreased noise in imaging experiments or to an enhanced sensitivity in interferometric applications.

Stochastic diffusion is the noisy and uncertain process through which dynamics like epidemics, or agents like animal species, disperse over a larger area. Understanding these processes is becoming increasingly important as we attempt to better prepare for potential pandemics and as species ranges shift in response to climate change. Unfortunately, modeling of stochastic diffusion is mostly done through inaccurate deterministic tools that fail to capture the random nature of dispersal or else through expensive computational simulations. In particular, standard tools fail to fully capture the heterogeneity of the area over which this diffusion occurs. Rural areas with low population density require different epidemic models than urban areas; likewise, the edges of a species range require us to explicitly track low integer numbers of individuals rather than vague averages. In this work, we introduce a series of new tools called "mean-FLAME" models that track stochastic dispersion using approximate master equations that explicitly follow the probability distribution of an area of interest over all of its possible states, up to states that are active enough to be approximated using a mean-field model. In one limit, this approach is locally exact if we explicitly track enough states, and in the other limit collapses back to traditional deterministic models if we track no state explicitly. Applying this approach, we show how deterministic tools fail to capture the uncertainty around the speed of nonlinear dynamical processes. This is especially true for marginal areas that are close to unsuitable for diffusion, like the edge of a species range or epidemics in small populations. The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". Despite the wide usage of parametric point processes in theory and applications, a sound goodness-of-fit procedure to test whether a given parametric model is appropriate for data coming from a self-exciting point processes has been missing in the literature. In this work, we establish a bootstrap-based goodness-of-fit test which empirically works for all kinds of self-exciting point processes (and even beyond). In an infill-asymptotic setting we also prove its asymptotic consistency, albeit only in the particular case that the underlying point process is inhomogeneous Poisson.

For an ideal $I$ in a Noetherian ring $R$, we introduce and study its conductor as a tool to explore the Rees algebra of $I$. The conductor of $I$ is an ideal $C(I)\subset R$ obtained from the defining ideals of the Rees algebra and the symmetric algebra of $I$ by a colon operation. Using this concept we investigate when adding an element to an ideal preserves the property of being of linear type. In this regard, a generalization of a result by Valla in terms of the conductor ideal is presented. When the conductor of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring is the graded maximal ideal, a criteria is given for when the Rees algebra and the symmetric algebra have the same Krull dimension. Finally, noting the fact that the conductor of a monomial ideal is a monomial ideal, the conductor of some families of monomial ideals, namely bounded Veronese ideals and edge ideals of graphs, are determined., Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure

Wildfire smoke is a health hazard as it contains a mixture of carcinogenic volatile compounds and fine particulate matter. In particular, exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a major concern, since these compounds have been recognized as important contributors to the overall carcinogenic risk of smoke exposure. In this work, gas and particle-phase PAH emissions from the combustion of Eastern White Pine (pinus strobus) were quantified using time-of-flight mass spectrometry over a range of burn conditions representative of wildfires and prescribed fires. These experiments allow for controlling conditions of fuel moisture, heat flux, and oxygen concentration to understand their impact on PAH emissions. We find that optimal conditions for fuel moisture content of 20 - 30%, heat load onto the sample of 60 - 70 kW/m$^2$, and oxygen concentrations of the burn environment of 5 - 15% can reduce the emissions of the heavy molar weight PAHs by up to 77%. Our analysis shows that the relative carcinogenic risk can be reduced by more than 50% under optimal conditions, offering a way for reducing emission exposure from forest treatment activities., Comment: Submitted to Atmospheric Pollution Research

High electric fields can significantly alter catalytic environments and the resultant chemical processes. Such fields arise naturally in biological systems but can also be artificially induced through localized excitations at nanoscale. Recently, strong field excitation of dielectric nanoparticles has emerged as an avenue for studying catalysis in highly ionized environments producing extreme electric fields. While the dynamics of surface ion emission driven by ultrafast laser ionization has been heavily explored, understanding the molecular dynamics leading to fragmentation has remained elusive. To address this, we employed a multiscale approach utilizing non-adiabatic quantum molecular dynamics (NAQMD) simulations on hydrogenated silica surfaces in both bare and wetted environments under field conditions mimicking those of an ionized nanoparticle. Our findings indicate that hole localization drives fragmentation dynamics, leading to surface silanol dissociation within 50 fs and charge transfer-induced water splitting in wetted environments within 150 fs. Further insight into such ultrafast mechanisms is critical for advancement of catalysis on the surface of charged nanosystems.

Heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) are motivated by attempts to explain neutrino masses and dark matter. If their masses are in the MeV to several GeV range, HNLs are light enough to be copiously produced at collider and accelerator facilities, but also heavy enough to decay to visible particles on length scales that can be observed in particle detectors. Previous studies evaluating the sensitivities of experiments have often focused on simple, but not particularly well-motivated, models in which the HNL mixes with only one active neutrino flavor. In this work, we accurately simulate models for HNL masses between 100 MeV and 10 GeV and arbitrary couplings to $e$, $\mu$, and $\tau$ leptons. We include over 150 HNL production channels and over 100 HNL decay modes, including all of the processes that can be dominant in some region of the general parameter space. The result is HNLCalc, a user-friendly, fast, and flexible library to compute the properties of HNL models. As examples, we implement HNLCalc to extend the FORESEE package to evaluate the prospects for HNL discovery at forward LHC experiments. We present sensitivity reaches for FASER and FASER2 in five benchmark scenarios with coupling ratios $|U_e|^2 : |U_\mu|^2 : |U_{\tau}|^2$ = 1:0:0, 0:1:0, 0:0:1, 0:1:1, and 1:1:1, where the latter two have not been studied previously. In the arbitrary pattern formation problem, $n$ autonomous, mobile robots must form an arbitrary pattern $P \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$. The (deterministic) robots are typically assumed to be indistinguishable, disoriented, and unable to communicate. An important distinction is whether robots have memory and/or a limited viewing range. Previous work managed to form $P$ under a natural symmetry condition if robots have no memory but an unlimited viewing range [22] or if robots have a limited viewing range but memory [25]. In the latter case, $P$ is only formed in a shrunk version that has constant diameter. Without memory and with limited viewing range, forming arbitrary patterns remains an open problem. We provide a partial solution by showing that $P$ can be formed under the same symmetry condition if the robots' initial diameter is $\leq 1$. Our protocol partitions $P$ into rotation-symmetric components and exploits the initial mutual visibility to form one cluster per component. Using a careful placement of the clusters and their robots, we show that a cluster can move in a coordinated way through its component while drawing $P$ by dropping one robot per pattern coordinate., Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures, submitted for SAND 2024, version with extended appendix

This paper presents the first results of the study of high-energy electron and muon neutrino charged-current interactions in the FASER$\nu$ emulsion/tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC. A subset of the FASER$\nu$ volume, which corresponds to a target mass of 128.6~kg, was exposed to neutrinos from the LHC $pp$ collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6~TeV and an integrated luminosity of 9.5 fb$^{-1}$. Applying stringent selections requiring electrons with reconstructed energy above 200~GeV, four electron neutrino interaction candidate events are observed with an expected background of $0.025^{+0.015}_{-0.010}$, leading to a statistical significance of 5.2$\sigma$. This is the first direct observation of electron neutrino interactions at a particle collider. Eight muon neutrino interaction candidate events are also detected, with an expected background of $0.22^{+0.09}_{-0.07}$, leading to a statistical significance of 5.7$\sigma$. The signal events include neutrinos with energies in the TeV range, the highest-energy electron and muon neutrinos ever detected from an artificial source. The energy-independent part of the interaction cross section per nucleon is measured over an energy range of 560--1740 GeV (520--1760 GeV) for $\nu_e$ ($\nu_{\mu}$) to be $(1.2_{-0.7}^{+0.8}) \times 10^{-38}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ ($(0.5\pm0.2) \times 10^{-38}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$), consistent with Standard Model predictions. These are the first measurements of neutrino interaction cross sections in those energy ranges.

The photoelectric effect is not truly instantaneous, but exhibits attosecond delays that can reveal complex molecular dynamics. Sub-femtosecond duration light pulses provide the requisite tools to resolve the dynamics of photoionization. Accordingly, the past decade has produced a large volume of work on photoionization delays following single photon absorption of an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photon. However, the measurement of time-resolved core-level photoionization remained out of reach. The required x-ray photon energies needed for core-level photoionization were not available with attosecond tabletop sources. We have now measured the x-ray photoemission delay of core-level electrons, and here report unexpectedly large delays, ranging up to 700 attoseconds in NO near the oxygen K-shell threshold. These measurements exploit attosecond soft x-ray pulses from a free-electron laser (XFEL) to scan across the entire region near the K-shell threshold. Furthermore, we find the delay spectrum is richly modulated, suggesting several contributions including transient trapping of the photoelectron due to shape resonances, collisions with the Auger-Meitner electron that is emitted in the rapid non-radiative relaxation of the molecule, and multi-electron scattering effects. The results demonstrate how x-ray attosecond experiments, supported by comprehensive theoretical modelling, can unravel the complex correlated dynamics of core-level photoionization.

The Forward Search Experiment (FASER) at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has recently directly detected the first collider neutrinos. Neutrinos play an important role in all FASER analyses, either as signal or background, and it is therefore essential to understand the neutrino event rates. In this study, we update previous simulations and present prescriptions for theoretical predictions of neutrino fluxes and cross sections, together with their associated uncertainties. With these results, we discuss the potential for possible measurements that could be carried out in the coming years with the FASER neutrino data to be collected in LHC Run 3 and Run 4., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

We consider the \emph{exact plurality consensus} problem for \emph{population protocols}. Here, $n$ anonymous agents start each with one of $k$ opinions. Their goal is to agree on the initially most frequent opinion (the \emph{plurality opinion}) via random, pairwise interactions. The case of $k = 2$ opinions is known as the \emph{majority problem}. Recent breakthroughs led to an always correct, exact majority population protocol that is both time- and space-optimal, needing $O(\log n)$ states per agent and, with high probability, $O(\log n)$ time~[Doty, Eftekhari, Gasieniec, Severson, Stachowiak, and Uznanski; 2021]. We know that any always correct protocol requires $\Omega(k^2)$ states, while the currently best protocol needs $O(k^{11})$ states~[Natale and Ramezani; 2019]. For ordered opinions, this can be improved to $O(k^6)$~[Gasieniec, Hamilton, Martin, Spirakis, and Stachowiak; 2016]. We design protocols for plurality consensus that beat the quadratic lower bound by allowing a negligible failure probability. While our protocols might fail, they identify the plurality opinion with high probability even if the bias is $1$. Our first protocol achieves this via $k-1$ tournaments in time $O(k \cdot \log n)$ using $O(k + \log n)$ states. While it assumes an ordering on the opinions, we remove this restriction in our second protocol, at the cost of a slightly increased time $O(k \cdot \log n + \log^2 n)$. By efficiently pruning insignificant opinions, our final protocol reduces the number of tournaments at the cost of a slightly increased state complexity $O(k \cdot \log\log n + \log n)$. This improves the time to $O(n / x_{\max} \cdot \log n + \log^2 n)$, where $x_{\max}$ is the initial size of the plurality. Note that $n/x_{\max}$ is at most $k$ and can be much smaller (e.g., in case of a large bias or if there are many small opinions).

Surface charges play a fundamental role in physics and chemistry, particularly in shaping the catalytic properties of nanomaterials. Tracking nanoscale surface charge dynamics remains challenging due to the involved length and time scales. Here, we demonstrate real-time access to the nanoscale charge dynamics on dielectric nanoparticles employing reaction nanoscopy. We present a four-dimensional visualization of the non-linear charge dynamics on strong-field irradiated single SiO$_2$ nanoparticles with femtosecond-nanometer resolution and reveal how surface charges affect surface molecular bonding with quantum dynamical simulations. We performed semi-classical simulations to uncover the roles of diffusion and charge loss in the surface charge redistribution process. The collective response of metal nanostructures to optical excitation leads to localized plasmon generation with nanoscale field confinement driving applications in e.g. quantum optics, optoelectronics, and nanophotonics, where a bottleneck is the ultrafast loss of coherence by different damping channels. The present understanding is built-up on indirect measurements dictated by the extreme timescales involved. Here, we introduce a straightforward field sampling method that allows to measure the plasmonic field of arbitrary nanostructures in the most relevant petahertz regime. We compare experimental data for colloidal nanoparticles to finite-difference-time-domain calculations, which show that the dephasing of the plasmonic excitation can be resolved with sub-cycle resolution. Furthermore, we observe a substantial reshaping of the spectral phase of the few-cycle pulse induced by this collective excitation and we demonstrate ad-hoc pulse shaping by tailoring the plasmonic sample. Developing accurate computational models of wildfire dynamics is increasingly important due to the substantial and expanding negative impacts of wildfire events on human health, infrastructure, and the environment. Wildfire spread and emissions depend on a number of factors, including fuel type, environmental conditions (moisture, wind speed, etc.) and terrain/location. However, there currently exist only a few experimental facilities that enable testing of the interplay of these factors at length scales <1 m with carefully controlled and characterized boundary conditions and advanced diagnostics. Experiments performed at such facilities are required for informing and validating computational models. Here we present the design and characterization of a novel tilting wind tunnel (the 'WindCline') for studying wildfire dynamics. The WindCline is unique in that the entire tunnel platform is constructed to pivot around a central axis, which enables sloping of the entire system without compromising the quality of the flow properties. In addition, this facility has a configurable design for the test section and diffuser to accommodate a suite of advanced diagnostics to aid in the characterization of 1) the parameters needed to establish boundary conditions and 2) flame properties and dynamics. The WindCline thus allows for measurement and control of several critical wildfire variables and boundary conditions, especially at the small length scales important to the development of high fidelity computational simulations (10 - 100 cm). Let $N\geq3$ and $r\geq1$ be integers and $p\geq2$ be a prime such that $p\nmid N$. One can consider two different integral structures on the space of modular forms over $\mathbb{Q}$, one coming from arithmetic via $q$-expansions, the other coming from geometry via integral models of modular curves. Both structures are stable under the Hecke operators; furthermore, their quotient is finite torsion. Our goal is to investigate the exponent of the annihilator of the quotient. We will apply methods due to Brian Conrad to the situation of modular forms of even weight and level $\Gamma(Np^{r})$ over $\mathbb{Q}_{p}(\zeta_{Np^{r}})$ to obtain an upper bound for the exponent. We also use Klein forms to construct explicit modular forms of level $p^{r}$ whenever $p^{r}>3$, allowing us to compute a lower bound which agrees with the upper bound. The Experimental Cavern North 3 (ECN3) is an underground experimental cavern on the CERN Pr\'evessin site. ECN3 currently hosts the NA62 experiment, with a physics programme devoted to rare kaon decays and searches of hidden particles approved until Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). Several options are proposed on the longer term in order to make best use of the worldwide unique potential of the high-intensity/high-energy proton beam extracted from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) in ECN3. Consider ideals $I$ of the form \[ I=(x_1^2,\dots, x_n^2)+\mathrm{RLex}(x_ix_j) \] where $\mathrm{RLex}(x_ix_j)$ is the ideal generated by all the square-free monomials which are greater than or equal to $x_ix_j$ in the reverse lexicographic order. We will determine some interesting properties regarding the shape of the Hilbert series of $I$. Using a theorem of Lindsey, this allows for a short proof that any algebra defined by $I$ has the strong Lefschetz property when the underlying field is of characteristic zero. Building on recent work by Phuong and Tran, this result is then extended to fields of sufficiently high positive characteristic. We consider the following shared-resource scheduling problem: Given a set of jobs $J$, for each $j\in J$ we must schedule a job-specific processing volume of $v_j>0$. A total resource of $1$ is available at any time. Jobs have a resource requirement $r_j\in[0,1]$, and the resources assigned to them may vary over time. However, assigning them less will cause a proportional slowdown. We consider two settings. In the first, we seek to minimize the makespan in an online setting: The resource assignment of a job must be fixed before the next job arrives. Here we give an optimal $e/(e-1)$-competitive algorithm with runtime $\mathcal{O}(n\cdot \log n)$. In the second, we aim to minimize the total completion time. We use a continuous linear programming (CLP) formulation for the fractional total completion time and combine it with a previously known dominance property from malleable job scheduling to obtain a lower bound on the total completion time. We extract structural properties by considering a geometrical representation of a CLP's primal-dual pair. We combine the CLP schedule with a greedy schedule to obtain a $(3/2+\varepsilon)$-approximation for this setting.
