The therapeutic range of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (PDE5) inhibitors is getting wider in the last years. This review study focuses on the potential employment of PDE5 inhibitors as an adjunct tool for the therapeutic management of male infertility. The literature tends to suggest a beneficial effect of PDE5 inhibitors on Leydig and Sertoli cells secretory function. It also appears that PDE5 inhibitors play a role in the regulation of the contractility of the testicular tunica albuginea and the epididymis. Moreover, scientific data suggest that PDE5 inhibitors enhance the prostatic secretory function leading to an improvement in sperm motility. Other studies additionally demonstrate the role of PDE5 inhibitors in the regulation of the sperm capacitation process. Placebo-controlled, randomized, blind studies are necessary to unambiguously incorporate PDE5 inhibitors as an adjunct tool for the pharmaceutical treatment of semen disorders and male infertility.

The aim was to assess the expression stability of three commonly used reference genes, namely, β-actin (ACTB), 18S ribosomal RNA (18S), and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), in placental tissue obtained from pregnant women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and healthy controls.mRNA was isolated after delivery from the placentae of 10 PCOS and 10 control women with term, uncomplicated, singleton pregnancies. The expression of ACTB, 18S, and GAPDH was analyzed using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Gene expression stability was evaluated with the RefFinder, GeNorm, Normfinder, BestKeeper, and Delta-Ct tools.ACTB was ranked as the most stably expressed gene, followed by 18S. The expression of GAPDH varied considerably in both studied groups, while it was increased in PCOS versus controls (5.3-fold, p 0.05).ACTB is an appropriate reference gene for placental gene expression studies in women with PCOS, whereas GAPDH is unfit for such a role, as its placental expression is increased in PCOS.

Οι κορινθιακές αποικίες περί τον Αμβρακικό κόλπο, Αμβρακία, Λευκάς, Ανακτόριον και Σόλλιον εντάσσονται στον χώρο της ΒΔ Ελλάδος. Οι Κορίνθιοι είχαν επιδείξει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για την ευρύτερη περιοχή, ακόμα και πριν από την ίδρυση των αποικιών. Η Αμβρακία, η σημερινή Άρτα, ιδρύθηκε βόρεια του Αμβρακικού κόλπου, δίπλα στην κοίτη του ποταμού Αράχθου. Η Λευκάς χτίστηκε στην ομώνυμη τότε χερσόνησο της Ακαρνανίας, νότια της σημερινής πόλης και το Ανακτόριον στον σημερινό κόλπο του Αγίου Πέτρου στη ΒΔ Ακαρνανία, ελέγχοντας το ιερό του Ακτίου Απόλλωνος. Ο αποικισμός συνδέεται με την πρόθεση του Κυψέλου για τη διατήρηση της επικοινωνίας και των ασφαλών μετακινήσεων προς τον ιλλυρικό Βορρά και τη Δύση. Οι πόλεις αυτές δεν είχαν μεγάλο πληθυσμό και η επικράτειά τους περιορισμένη. Στην αρχαϊκή εποχή βρίσκονται υπό την πολιτική κηδεμονία της μητρόπολης, από την οποία εξαρτώνται οικονομικά σε μεγάλο βαθμό. Προς το τέλος του Στ΄ αι. π.Χ. η Αμβρακία εξελίσσεται σε μία περιφερειακή δύναμη και θέτει υπό την ηγεμονία της τα βορειότερα ηπειρωτικά και μακεδονικά έθνη. Η Λευκάς κατασκευάζει λιμένες και επισκευάζει τη διώρυγα που τη χωρίζει από την Ακαρνανία για τη διευκόλυνση των θαλάσσιων μετακινήσεων στο Κ Ιόνιο και στις αρχές του Ε΄αι. π.Χ. κόβει νόμισμα για την κατασκευή του στόλου της. Αν και στο α΄ μισό του Ε΄ αι. π.Χ. αναπτύσσονται στη Λευκάδα και στο Ανακτόριον φιλοκερκυραϊκές παρατάξεις, οι αποικίες γενικά συνεργάζονται στενά με την Κόρινθο. Στον Πελοποννησιακό Πόλεμο, η Αμβρακία χάνει αρκετή από τη δύναμή της, η Λευκάς εξελίσσεται σε κύριο γεωστρατηγικό σημείο για τους αντίπαλους στόλους, ενώ το Ανακτόριον και το Σόλλιον ενσωματώνονται στους Ακαρνάνες. Κατά τον Δ΄ αι. π.Χ. μετά από ένα μικρό διάστημα πολιτιειακών ζυμώσεων, οι αποικίες επανέρχονται στην κορινθιακή επιρροή και στην Πελοποννησιακή Συμμαχία. Η επαναδραστηριοποίηση στο διαμετακομιστικό εμπόριο και ιδιαίτερα σε αυτό των σικελικών σιτηρών, οδηγεί στην οικονομική ευημερία αλλά και μέσω της εκστρατείας του Τιμολέοντος στην επαναβεβαίωση των συγγενικών σχέσεων με τη μητρόπολη. Οι κορινθιακές καταβολές τονίζονται μέσα από την προβολή λατρειών, μύθων, εθίμων και πρακτικών. Παρά τη μακεδονική και μολοσσική κατάκτηση, στις αποικίες επιβιώνουν και στην ελληνιστική περίοδο οι κορινθιακές διασυνδέσεις, επηρεάζοντας και τις γειτονικές μη κορινθιακές αποικίες και έθνη.

PURPOSE Teenage pregnancies have consistently been associated with preterm labor in a wide range of studies. Evidence regarding the incidence and potential complications of teenage pregnancies in Greece is at present scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the perinatal outcomes as well as the risk of perinatal and obstetric complications of teenage pregnancies. METHODS This retrospective study was conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University Hospital of Patras, Greece, and all data recorded concerned the year 2019 (January-December). We retrospectively reviewed 643 cases of singleton pregnancies divided into two groups, as follows: Group A included women of average maternal age (AMA) (20-34 years old), and Group B included teenagers, defined as women less than 20 years old. Data regarding demographic and pregnancy characteristics as well as obstetric and neonatal complications were collected. RESULTS Teenage pregnancies accounted for 6.7% of all deliveries. Importance Irrespective of the precise mechanisms leading to endometriosis, angiogenesis is essential for the establishment and long-term proliferation of the disease. As current surgical and medical management options for women with endometriosis have substantial drawbacks and limitations, novel agents are needed and molecules targeting the angiogenic cascade could serve as potential candidates. Objective Our aim was to review current data about the role of angiogenesis in the pathophysiology of endometriosis and summarize the novel antiangiogenic agents that could be potentially used in clinical management of patients with endometriosis. Evidence acquisition Original research and review articles were retrieved through a computerized literature search. Results Loss of balance between angiogenic activators and suppressors triggers the nonphysiological angiogenesis observed in endometriotic lesions. Several proangiogenic mediators have been identified and most of them have demonstrated increased concentrations in the peritoneal fluid and/or serum of women with endometriosis. Among the antiangiogenic molecules, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents, dopamine agonists, romidepsin, and statins have shown the most promising results so far. Conclusions and relevance Given the limitations of current treatments of endometriosis, there is a need for novel, more efficient agents. Antiangiogenic molecules could be used potentially in clinical management of women with endometriosis; however, their safety and efficiency should be carefully assessed prior to that. Further large prospective trials in humans are needed before any treatment is introduced into daily clinical practice.

The corinthian colonies around the Ambracian Gulf, Ambracia, Leucas, Anactorion and Sollion are located in northwestern Greece. The Corinthians had been especially interested in the region, even before the foundation of the colonies. Ambracia, modern Arta, was founded N of the Ambracian Gulf, next to the bed of river Arachthos. Leucas was built at the homonymous acarnanian peninsula, S of the modern city, and Anactorion at the bay of St. Peter in NW Acarnania, including the shrine of Apollo Aktios. Cypselus' intention to maintain the communication and to ensure the voyage towards Illyria and the west interprets the corinthian colonization. These new cities had no great population and their territory was constricted. During the archaic period they were politically patronized by their mother city and economically highly dependent on her. Towards the end of the 6th cent. B.C., Ambracia had become a regional power and had exercised a hegemony in the region of the northern epirotic and macedonian ethne. Leucas had constructed ports and repairs the canal between the island and Acarnania, in order to facilitate the maritime voyage in the central Ionian Sea. The colony mints its first coinage at the beginning of the 5th cent. B.C. in order to build its fleet. Although pro-corcyrean parties are being developed within Leucas and Anactorion during the first half of the 5th cent. B.C., the colonies closely cooperate with Corinth. During the Peloponnesian War, Ambracia loses its strength, Leucas' geostrategic position is recognised by both opponent navies, and Anactorion and Sollion are incorporated by the Acarnanians. During the 4th cent. B.C. the corinthian colonies, after a break of constitutional changes, return to the sphere of corinthian influence and to the Peloponnesian Alliance. Due to the transit commerce which is developed again, and especially as far as the sicilian corn is concerned, and due to Timoleon's campaign, the bonds of syngeneia with Corinth are reaffirmed. The corinthian roots are emphasized through cults, myths, customs and practices. Despite the macedonian and molossian conquest, the corinthian interconnections survive in the colonies during the hellenistic period, exercising their influence even on neighbouring colonies and ethne.
