We introduce residue hyperdimensional computing, a computing framework that unifies residue number systems with an algebra defined over random, high-dimensional vectors. We show how residue numbers can be represented as high-dimensional vectors in a manner that allows algebraic operations to be performed with component-wise, parallelizable operations on the vector elements. The resulting framework, when combined with an efficient method for factorizing high-dimensional vectors, can represent and operate on numerical values over a large dynamic range using resources that scale only logarithmically with the range, a vast improvement over previous methods. It also exhibits impressive robustness to noise. We demonstrate the potential for this framework to solve computationally difficult problems in visual perception and combinatorial optimization, showing improvement over baseline methods. More broadly, the framework provides a possible account for the computational operations of grid cells in the brain, and it suggests new machine learning architectures for representing and manipulating numerical data.

Releasing the patient's immune system against their own malignancy by the use of checkpoint inhibitors is delivering promising results. However, only a subset of patients currently benefit from them. One major limitation of these therapies relates to the inability of T cells to detect or penetrate into the tumor resulting in unresponsiveness to checkpoint inhibition. Virotherapy is an attractive tool for enabling checkpoint inhibitors as viruses are naturally recognized by innate defense elements which draws the attention of the immune system. Besides their intrinsic immune stimulating properties, the adenoviruses used here are armed to express tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) and interleukin-2 (IL-2). These cytokines result in immunological danger signaling and multiple appealing T-cell effects, including trafficking, activation and propagation. When these viruses were injected into B16.OVA melanoma tumors in animals concomitantly receiving programmed cell-death protein 1 (PD-1) blocking antibodies both tumor growth control (p < 0.0001) and overall survival (p < 0.01) were improved. In this set-up, the addition of adoptive cell therapy with OT-I lymphocytes did not increase efficacy further. When virus injections were initiated before antibody treatment in a prime-boost approach, 100% of tumors regressed completely and all mice survived. Viral expression of IL2 and TNFa altered the cytokine balance in the tumor microenvironment towards Th1 and increased the intratumoral proportion of CD8+ and conventional CD4+ T cells. These preclinical studies provide the rationale and schedule for a clinical trial where oncolytic adenovirus coding for TNFa and IL-2 (TILT-123) is used in melanoma patients receiving an anti-PD-1 antibody.

Background After COVID-19 infection, long-term impacts on functioning may occur. We studied the functioning of patients with post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) and compared them to controls without PCC.Methods This cross-sectional study consisted of 442 patients with PCC referred to rehabilitation at the Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) Outpatient Clinic for the Long-Term Effects of COVID-19, and 198 controls without PCC. Functioning was assessed with a questionnaire including WHODAS 2.0. Patients underwent physical testing including a hand grip strength test (HGST) and a 6-minute walking test (6MWT). Lifestyle was assessed by questionnaire and comorbidities were collected as ICD-10 codes from the HUS Data Lake on the HUS Acamedic platform.Results The WHODAS 2.0 average total score was 34 (SD 18) (moderate functional limitation) for patients with PCC and 6 (SD 8) (normal or mild limitation) for the controls. The disability was higher in all aspects of WHODAS 2.0 in patients with PCC. Bivariate binomial and multivariable regression analyses showed that the presence of comorbidities, anxiety, depression, and smoking predicted a WHODAS 2.0 score of 24 (moderate functional limitation) or above in the PCC group. The average 6MWT distance was 435 m (SD 98 m) in patients with PCC and 627 m (SD 70 m) in controls. HGST measurements showed no significant differences from controls.Conclusions In conclusion, patients with PCC had significantly reduced functioning based on WHODAS 2.0 scores and the 6MWT results. Comorbidities, anxiety, depression, and smoking were associated with moderate or severe limitations in functioning. Findings support that PCC is multifactorial and requires a holistic approach to rehabilitation.

Differences in the behaviors of shot-derived metal Pb and metalloids Sb and As render the remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated shooting range soils challenging. Treatment methods that generally reduce Pb solubility may simultaneously increase Sb and As solubility due to pH changes and ion competition. We investigated the potential of tailings from phosphate mining, previously used to immobilize Pb, to stabilize acidic shooting range soil without incurring the risk of enhanced Sb and As solubility. In a 2.5-year field trial, the soil of a former shooting range, surface-treated with tailings consisting of phlogopite, carbonate minerals calcite and dolomite, and residues of apatite, displayed no evidence of increased Sb or As solubility. Results from a parallel laboratory-scale pot experiment, carried out with test soils from the field site, supported the findings. Under acidic conditions, dissolution of the carbonate fraction of the tailings, and the subsequent decrease in soil acidity, contributed to the release of Sb and As from organic associations and/or Al/ Fe (hydr)oxide surfaces. We concluded that the abundant Ca2+ ions liberated upon carbonate dissolution probably reacted with the anionic species of Sb and As to form sparingly soluble Ca-antimonates and Ca-arsenates. Moreover, the solubility of intrinsic and apatite-derived P in the test soils, initially hypothesized to compete for adsorption with Sb and As and thereby increase their solubility, also decreased after tailings treatment. In conclusion, Pb-contaminated shooting range soil was successfully stabilized with the tailings without increasing Sb or As solubility.

The Uses of the Russian Onomatopoeic Interjection bats ‘bam, bang’ Descriptions of Russian grammar have long acknowledged the possibility of using indeclinable onomatopoeic verbal interjections as predicates instead of verb forms. It has been suggested that this usage primarily replaces perfective (resultative) past tense verb forms of the same stem. We have analysed 470 examples from the Russian National Corpus to show that the interjection bats ‘bam, bang’ is not only used as a predicate. It is very often placed in positions where the verbs sharing the same stem (e.g. batsatʹ ‘to bang repeatedly’ or ‘to bang once’) cannot be used. Many of the predicate uses are not timebound. Bats can also be used in describing sounds and their potential effects, even when no actual sound is involved. O użyciach rosyjskiego wykrzyknika onomatopeicznego bac ‘bach’ W opisach gramatyki rosyjskiej od dawna rejestrowano możliwość użycia nieodmiennych onomatopeicznych wykrzykników czasownikowych jako predykatu. Wyjaśniano, że takie użycie zastępuje przede wszystkim formy rezultatywne czasownika dokonanego o tym samym temacie w czasie przeszłym. Autorki artykułu przeanalizowały 470 przykładów zaczerpniętych z Narodowego Korpusu Języka Rosyjskiego, aby wykazać, że wykrzyknik bac ‘bach’ jest używany nie tylko w funkcji predykatywnej. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że omawiany wykrzyknik często pojawia się w pozycjach, w których nie można użyć czasowników o tym samym temacie (np. bacatʹ ‘uderzać wielokrotnie’ lub ‘uderzyć raz’), a w wielu użyciach predykatywnych nie jest osadzony czasowo. Z przeprowadzonej analizy wynika również, że wykrzyknik bac może być używany do opisu dźwięków i ich potencjalnych skutków, nawet jeśli sam efekt dźwiękowy w istocie nie zachodzi.

Climate change induced mild and rainy winters may expose soils to more frequent and prolonged waterlogging in boreal regions. Resulting oxygen depletion induces reductive dissolution of iron (Fe) oxides further altering the stability of Fe-associated organic matter. Thus far, the impact of waterlogging on the coupled cycling of Fe and carbon (C) in upland arable soils remains unknown. We constructed a monolithic experimental system with 32 soil profiles (l = 63 cm, d = 15.2 cm) collected from two agricultural fields (silty clay, sandy loam) to study the effects of off-season waterlogging, overwintering cover crop and soil type on soil redox potential (Eh), Fe solubility, and movement of C and nitrogen (N) within the soil–plant-atmosphere continuum. Soil moisture, temperature, electrical conductivity, and Eh were continuously monitored, and soil pore water samples were collected at three soil depths. Here, we assess the systems suitability for studying coupled Fe and C dynamics in boreal climate, and investigate the treatment impacts on soil Eh, pH, reductive Fe dissolution and N concentration in pore water. Waterlogging led to reducing conditions in both soils down to 30 cm depth at the soil temperature (+4 to 12 °C) matching those of spring and autumn in southern Finland. The declining Eh and the slightly rising Fe concentration in porewater (max ∼ 10 µmol l−1) suggest that reductive dissolution of Fe could proceed even during mild winters if the duration of waterlogging exceeds 1–2 weeks. The study demonstrated that cover crops may accelerate the drop in soil Eh by removing bioavailable N, and hence controlling the availability of alternative electron acceptors (nitrate) in the soil. Thus, the simultaneous effects of cover crops on C inputs, and on N and water dynamics, all influencing redox reactions, emphasize the importance of incorporating vegetation into studies exploring the impacts of waterlogging on coupled dynamics of Fe and C.

Objectives To assess the incidence of hospital admissions for covid-19 disease in pregnant women, severity of covid-19 disease, and medical treatment provided to pregnant women with moderate to severe covid-19 during the first 10 months of the pandemic.Design Individual patient data meta-analysis of population based cohorts in International Obstetric Survey Systems.Setting 10 European countries with national or regional surveillance within the International Obstetric Survey Systems (INOSS) collaboration using aligned definitions and case report forms: Belgium, France (regional), Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden (regional), and the UK. The dominant variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was the wild-type variant in all countries during the study period (1 March 2020 to 31 December 2020).Participants The source population was 1.7 million women giving birth (maternities) from 1 March 2020 to 31 December 2020; pregnant women were included if they were admitted to hospital and had a positive polymerase chain reaction test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus ≤7 days before hospital admission, during admission, or up to two days after giving birth. We further categorised the hospital admission in two groups; covid-19 admission (hospital admission due to covid-19 or with reported symptoms of covid-19 disease) or non-covid-19 admission (admission to hospital for obstetric healthcare or no symptoms of covid-19 disease).Main outcome measures Incidence of hospital admissions for covid-19 per 1000 maternities, frequency of moderate to severe covid-19 disease, and number of women who received specific medical treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Moderate to severe covid-19 disease was defined as maternal death, admission to an intensive care unit, or need for respiratory support.Results Among 1.7 million maternities, 9003 women were included in the study: 2350 (26.1%) were admitted to hospital because of covid-19 disease or had symptoms of disease. The pooled incidence of hospital admissions for covid-19 per 1000 maternities was 0.8 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.5 to 1.2, τ2=0.44), ranging from no hospital admissions in Iceland to 1.7 in France and 1.9 in the UK. 13 women died due to covid-19. Among 2219 women admitted to hospital for covid-19 in countries with complete information on respiratory support, 820 women (39.5%, 95% CI 34.6% to 44.4%, τ2=0.02) had moderate to severe covid-19 disease. At most, 16.8% (95% CI 7.7% to 32.9%, I2=81.8%, τ2=0.7) of women with moderate to severe covid-19 received specific medical treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection with corticosteroids, although 66.6% (59.4% to 73.2%, I2=50.1, τ2=0.06) were given thromboprophylaxis.Conclusions Population based surveillance in 10 European countries during the first 10 months of the covid-19 pandemic showed variations in the risk of hospital admissions for covid-19 in pregnant women. This finding indicates that national public health policies likely had a substantial and previously unrecognised role in protecting pregnant women. Few pregnant women with moderate to severe covid-19 were given specific medical treatment for SARS-CoV-2 disease, even when there were no or minor safety concerns. Lessons for future pandemics include the importance of rapid, robust surveillance systems for maternal and perinatal health, and of including use for pregnant women early in the development and testing of medicines and vaccines for public health emergencies.

We investigated the potential of tailings from phosphate mining, consisting of phlogopite, carbonate minerals calcite and dolomite, and residues of apatite, to serve as a stabilizing agent in the remediation of Pb-contaminated soil in situ or on-site. In a 2.5-year field trial, test plots located in a former shooting range area were surface-treated with the tailings and analyzed for tailings-induced changes in Pb solubility and thus potential mobility within the soil profile. The factors and mechanisms controlling tailings-induced changes in Pb solubility in various soil types, and the susceptibility of Pb to leaching down the soil profile following the treatment, were investigated in supplementary laboratory-scale experiments carried out with horizon-specific soil samples collected from the field site. In the tailings-treated soil, the dissolution of the carbonate fraction of the tailings and the subsequent increase in soil pH contributed to the displacement of shot-derived Pb2+ ions by the carbonate-derived calcium ions (Ca2+) and the adsorption of Pb2+ by soil organic matter and Al, Fe, and Mn (hydr)oxide surfaces. Moreover, the apatite fraction of the tailings formed poorly-soluble compounds with Pb, particularly in soils high in exchangeable Pb2+ with respect to their cation exchange capacity. Consequently, the Pb solubility in tailings-treated soils substantially decreased. The reduction in Pb solubility was most evident in the organic topsoil high in Pb. Despite the liming effect of the tailings, and the susceptibility of Pb to form organic complexes conducive to solubilization upon an increase in pH, we found no evidence of tailings-induced leaching of Pb down the soil profile.

Public spaces facilitate interactions among people from diverse backgrounds and serve as arenas that offer valuable insights into societal dynamics. They have the potential to promote inclusion, yet they can also foster exclusionary practices. Focusing on the years 2022 and 2023, and the cases of Vienna and Helsinki, this article examines how different actors, from the city administration to local stakeholders and young people, perceive and negotiate inclusion and exclusion in public space. Through a multi-method analysis, including background research, expert interviews, and focus groups, we identified four key challenges that define the negotiation of inclusion and exclusion in public space and outline the perspectives, tensions, and policy measures connected to them. Our empirical material underscores how public space is a critical resource that is essential for fostering sustainable and resilient urban futures. Local governments need to be aware of the overlapping and contradictory effects of policies on various groups, and balance between universalistic and particularistic policy measures to address vulnerabilities and diverse community needs effectively. Taking a proactive perspective helps to address future crises while identifying ways of involving the perspectives of diverse stakeholders in such processes.

This article reviews recent progress in the development of the computing framework Vector Symbolic Architectures (also known as Hyperdimensional Computing). This framework is well suited for implementation in stochastic, emerging hardware and it naturally expresses the types of cognitive operations required for Artificial Intelligence (AI). We demonstrate in this article that the field-like algebraic structure of Vector Symbolic Architectures offers simple but powerful operations on high-dimensional vectors that can support all data structures and manipulations relevant to modern computing. In addition, we illustrate the distinguishing feature of Vector Symbolic Architectures, computing in superposition, which sets it apart from conventional computing. It also opens the door to efficient solutions to the difficult combinatorial search problems inherent in AI applications. We sketch ways of demonstrating that Vector Symbolic Architectures are computationally universal. We see them acting as a framework for computing with distributed representations that can play a role of an abstraction layer for emerging computing hardware. This article serves as a reference for computer architects by illustrating the philosophy behind Vector Symbolic Architectures, techniques of distributed computing with them, and their relevance to emerging computing hardware, such as neuromorphic computing.

Puumala orthohantavirus-caused hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (PUUV-HFRS) is characterized by strong neutrophil activation. Neutrophils are the most abundant immune cell type in the circulation and are specially equipped to rapidly respond to infections. They are more heterogenous than previously appreciated, with specific neutrophil subsets recently implicated in inflammation and immunosuppression. Furthermore, neutrophils can be divided based on their density to either low-density granulocytes (LDGs) or “normal density” polymorphonuclear cell (PMN) fractions. In the current study we aimed to identify and characterize the different neutrophil subsets in the circulation of PUUV-HFRS patients. PMNs exhibited an activation of antiviral pathways, while circulating LDGs were increased in frequency following acute PUUV-HFRS. Furthermore, cell surface marker expression analysis revealed that PUUV-associated LDGs are primarily immature and most likely reflect an increased neutrophil production from the bone marrow. Interestingly, both the frequency of LDGs and the presence of a “left shift” in blood associated with the extent of thrombocytopenia, one of the hallmarks of severe HFRS, suggesting that maturing neutrophils could play a role in disease pathogenesis. These results imply that elevated circulating LDGs might be a general finding in acute viral infections. However, in contrast to the COVID-19 associated LDGs described previously, the secretome of PUUV LDGs did not show significant immunosuppressive ability, which suggests inherent biological differences in the LDG responses that can be dependent on the causative virus or differing infection kinetics.

This data article provides an extensive dataset obtained from finite element (FE) simulations of microbond (MB) tests. The simulations cover a wide range of structural effects and artifacts that influence the results of the MB tests. A total of 432 simulations were performed,taking into account the various factors such as blade geometry and position, plastic behaviour of thermoset and thermoplastic droplets, material properties of the fibres, residual stresses, fracture modes at interfaces, and FE mesh sensitivity analysis. Each FE simulation consists of blade reaction force, blade displacement, fibre displacement, fibre strain and various energy metrics such as interface strain energy, total strain energy, damage energy and plastic dissipation energy. For ease of reference, the individual data files are organised in a systematic naming sequence based on the simulation matrices, detailing the specific abbreviations for each file. A user-friendly interface is also provided to read and visualisethe data from the output files in relation to the simulation matrix. Abstract Genomic analyses have redefined the molecular subgrouping of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Molecular subgroups guide risk-stratification and targeted therapies, but outcomes of recently identified subtypes are often unclear, owing to limited cases with comprehensive profiling and cross-protocol studies. We developed a machine learning tool (ALLIUM) for the molecular subclassification of ALL in retrospective cohorts as well as for up-front diagnostics. ALLIUM uses DNA methylation and gene expression data from 1131 Nordic ALL patients to predict 17 ALL subtypes with high accuracy. ALLIUM was used to revise and verify the molecular subtype of 281 B-cell precursor ALL (BCP-ALL) cases with previously undefined molecular phenotype, resulting in a single revised subtype for 81.5% of these cases. Our study shows the power of combining DNA methylation and gene expression data for resolving ALL subtypes and provides a comprehensive population-based retrospective cohort study of molecular subtype frequencies in the Nordic countries.

Nitrogen (N) from agricultural systems contributes to the eutrophication of waterbodies through leaching. Incorporating organic material with a high carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio, such as mixed pulp mill sludges (PMSs), into the soil in autumn could reduce the amount of leachable N. This study tested the potential of composted and lime-stabilised mixed PMSs (CPMS and LPMS) in reducing the concentration of mineral N in the soil, and thus the risk of N leaching from arable land in the boreal region using a two-year field experiment. To better understand the mechanisms of the PMSs for influencing mineral N concentration in soil, the impact of PMSs with different quality on the reactions of N in the soil was investigated in a laboratory incubation study. In the field experiment, nitrate-N (NO3--N) concentration was lower with PMSs compared to mineral fertilisation and the control during the first autumn and the following spring after PMS application. The undersowing of Italian ryegrass reduced the NO3--N concentration in the soil during the first autumn. In the incubation experiment, PMSs reduced the soil ammonium-N (NH4+-N) concentration at the beginning of the experiment and the soil NO3--N concentration throughout the experiment compared to a mineral fertiliser treatment and an organic fertiliser. Increased soil respiration in PMS-treated soils indicated increase in microbial activity, and thus immobilisation of soil NO3--N and NH4+-N due to PMSs addition. These results suggest that PMSs have the potential to reduce N leaching from agricultural soils. However, the immobilisation of N must be considered when planning the nutrient requirements of the following crops.
