In undergraduate life sciences education, open educational resources (OERs) increase accessibility and retention for students, reduce costs, and save instructors time and effort. Despite increasing awareness and utilization of these resources, OERs are not centrally located, and many undergraduate instructors describe challenges in locating relevant materials for use in their classes. To address this challenge, we have designed a resource collection (referred to as Open Resources for Biology Education, ORBE) with 89 unique resources that are primarily relevant to undergraduate life sciences education. To identify the resources in ORBE, we asked undergraduate life sciences instructors to list what OERs they use in their teaching and curated their responses. Here, we summarize the contents of the ORBE and describe how educators can use this resource as a tool to identify suitable materials to use in their classroom context. By highlighting the breadth of unique resources openly available for undergraduate biology education, we intend for the ORBE to increase instructors' awareness and use of OERs.

Abstract Simulating whole atmosphere dynamics, chemistry, and physics is computationally expensive. It can require high vertical resolution throughout the middle and upper atmosphere, as well as a comprehensive chemistry and aerosol scheme coupled to radiation physics. An unintentional outcome of the development of one of the most sophisticated and hence computationally expensive model configurations is that it often excludes a broad community of users with limited computational resources. Here, we analyze two configurations of the Community Earth System Model Version 2, Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model Version 6 (CESM2(WACCM6)) with simplified “middle atmosphere” chemistry at nominal 1 and 2° horizontal resolutions. Using observations, a reanalysis, and direct model comparisons, we find that these configurations generally reproduce the climate, variability, and climate sensitivity of the 1° nominal horizontal resolution configuration with comprehensive chemistry. While the background stratospheric aerosol optical depth is elevated in the middle atmosphere configurations as compared to the comprehensive chemistry configuration, it is comparable among all configurations during volcanic eruptions. For any purposes other than those needing an accurate representation of tropospheric organic chemistry and secondary organic aerosols, these simplified chemistry configurations deliver reliable simulations of the whole atmosphere that require 35% and 86% fewer computational resources at nominal 1 and 2° horizontal resolution, respectively.

The mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) is a dynamic layer of the earth's atmosphere. This region marks the interface at which neutral atmosphere dynamics begin to influence the upper atmosphere and ionosphere. However, our understanding of this region and our ability to accurately simulate it in global circulation models (GCMs) is limited by a lack of observations, especially in remote locations. To this end, a meteor radar was deployed from 2016 to 2020 on the remote mountainous island of South Georgia (54∘ S, 36∘ W) in the Southern Ocean. In this study we use these new measurements to characterise the fundamental dynamics of the MLT above South Georgia including large-scale winds, solar tides, planetary waves (PWs), and mesoscale gravity waves (GWs). We first present an improved method for time–height localisation of radar wind measurements and characterise the large-scale MLT winds. We then determine the amplitudes and phases of the diurnal (24 h), semidiurnal (12 h), terdiurnal (8 h), and quardiurnal (6 h) solar tides at this latitude. We find very large amplitudes up to 30 m s−1 for the quasi 2 d PW in summer and, combining our measurements with the meteor SAAMER radar in Argentina, show that the dominant modes of the quasi 5, 10, and 16 d PWs are westward 1 and 2. We investigate and compare wind variance due to both large-scale “resolved” GWs and small-scale “sub-volume” GWs in the MLT and characterise their seasonal cycles. Last, we use our radar observations and satellite temperature observations from the Microwave Limb Sounder to test a climatological simulation of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM). We find that WACCM exhibits a summertime mesopause near 80 km altitude that is around 10 K warmer and 10 km lower in altitude than observed. Above 95 km altitude, summertime meridional winds in WACCM reverse to poleward, but this not observed in radar observations in this altitude range. More significantly, we find that wintertime zonal winds between 85 to 105 km altitude are eastward up to 40 m s−1 in radar observations, but in WACCM they are westward up to 20 m s−1. We propose that this large discrepancy may be linked to the impacts of secondary GWs (2GWs) on the residual circulation, which are not included in most global models, including WACCM. These radar measurements can therefore provide vital constraints that can guide the development of GCMs as they extend upwards into this important region of the atmosphere.

With the onset of COVID-19, colleges and universities moved to emergency remote teaching, and instructors immediately adjusted their curricula. Many instructors adapted or developed new online lessons that they subsequently published as Open Educational Resources (OERs). While much has been examined related to how entire course designs evolved during this period, the same attention has not been paid to how individual lessons were structured to meet online learners' needs. As such, we evaluated OER lessons for the integration of universal design for learning (UDL) guidelines and active learning strategies. We evaluated OER lessons published in "CourseSource," which is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal that focuses on biology lessons implemented in undergraduate classrooms and provides the necessary details and supporting materials to replicate the lesson. We found that biology instructors used a variety of UDL guidelines and active learning strategies to encourage student learning and engagement in online teaching environments. This study also provides a collection of OER online lessons that instructors and educational developers can use to inform the practice of engaging biology students.

The recent advancement of simulation modeling to represent phenomena in three spatial dimensions (3D) requires the development of techniques that will allow comparison of the modeling outputs in multiple dimensions. However, many existing techniques for map comparison in two spatial dimensions (2D) have been developed from non-spatial method such Cohen’s Kappa. These techniques are not yet fully extended to deal with 3D map data or simulation outcomes. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to investigate the use of the 3D Accuracy and 3D Cohen’s Kappa coefficients to compare simulation model outputs in 3D. An existing agent-based model (ABM) of forest-fire smoke propagation was used to generate multiple scenarios for the purpose of comparing 3D simulation outputs. The results for 3D Accuracy and 3D Cohen’s Kappa produces meaningful values when comparing several scenarios with different 3D ABM outputs. This study emphasizes the need for the development of more advanced simulation output comparison techniques that operate in 3D and potentially over time (4D).

This paper reports on a project to compare the representation of the semiannual oscillation (SAO) in the equatorial stratosphere and lower mesosphere within six major global atmospheric reanalysis datasets and with recent satellite Sounding of the Atmosphere Using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) and Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) observations. All reanalyses have a good representation of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) in the equatorial lower and middle stratosphere and each displays a clear SAO centered near the stratopause. However, the differences among reanalyses are much more substantial in the SAO region than in the QBO-dominated region. The degree of disagreement among the reanalyses is characterized by the standard deviation (SD) of the monthly mean zonal wind and temperature; this depends on latitude, longitude, height, and time. The zonal wind SD displays a prominent equatorial maximum that increases with height, while the temperature SD reaches a minimum near the Equator and is largest in the polar regions. Along the Equator, the zonal wind SD is smallest around the longitude of Singapore, where consistently high-quality near-equatorial radiosonde observations are available. Interestingly, the near-Singapore minimum in SD is evident to at least ∼3 hPa, i.e., considerably higher than the usual ∼10 hPa ceiling for in situ radiosonde observations. Our measurement of the agreement among the reanalyses shows systematic improvement over the period considered (1980–2016), up to near the stratopause. Characteristics of the SAO at 1 hPa, such as its detailed time variation and the displacement off the Equator of the zonal wind SAO amplitude maximum, differ significantly among the reanalyses. Disagreement among the reanalyses becomes still greater above 1 hPa. One of the reanalyses in our study also has a version produced without assimilating satellite observations, and a comparison of the SAO in these two versions demonstrates the very great importance of satellite-derived temperatures in the realistic analysis of the tropical upper stratospheric circulation.

This paper explores young people's understandings of gender and investigates their gender-based experiences in high schools in Australia. The discussion is based on qualitative research including focus groups and interviews with 47 recent high school leavers from diverse linguistic, socioeconomic, religious, ethnic, gender and sexuality backgrounds, who attended a broad range of high school types in New South Wales (NSW). We found that young people are critically engaging in gender issues and are often challenging binary gender and associated inequitable practices in schools and beyond. They are taking a leading role in educating adults about gender--that is, they are 'teaching up', as young people conceptualised it, to their families and teachers about gender, gender-related issues and doing gender differently in contemporary times. Their views on gender are often in contrast to those institutional views that currently prevail in NSW schools, which often still reflect stereotypes that perpetuate gender inequalities.

We present simulations performed with six lightning parameterizations implemented in the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM5). The amount of lightning‐produced nitrogen oxides (LNOx) by the various schemes considered is estimated. We provide some insight on how the lightning NO injected in the atmosphere influences the global concentrations of key chemical species such as OH, HO2, H2O2, NOx, O3, SO2, CO, and HNO3. The vertical global averaged densities of HO2, H2O2, CO, and SO2 are depleted due to lightning while those of NO, NO2, O3, OH, and HNO3 increase. Our results indicate that the parameterizations based on the upward ice flux (ICEFLUX) exhibit the largest global and midlatitude spatial correlations (0.73 and 0.632 for ICEFLUX and 0.72 and 0.553 for cloud top height) with respect to satellite global flash rate observations. Five out of the six lightning schemes investigated exhibit larger LNOx per flash in the midlatitudes than in the tropics. In particular, it is found that the ICEFLUX midlatitude LNOx per flash exhibits the largest difference with respect to its predicted tropical LNOx per flash, in agreement with available observations. When using CAM5, the ICEFLUX lightning parameterization could be considered a reliable lightning scheme (within its intrinsic uncertainties) in terms of its geographical distribution. Both ICEFLUX and cloud top height results agree with the enhancements of NO2 and O3 produced by lightning over tropical Atlantic and Africa and the weaker lightning background over the tropical Pacific reported by Martin et al. (2007) in the periods and locations (upper troposphere) where lightning is expected to dominate the trace gas observations.

Agent-based modeling approaches have been used for various case studies related to the geospatial dynamics of complex systems. The proliferation of forest-fire smoke and the associated airborne particulate matter that behaves as complex systems make it important to develop reliable geospatial models that can simulate the propagation process to avoid impacts to human health and the environment. Therefore, the main objective of this research study is the development and implementation of an agent-based model (ABM) for the propagation of forest-fire smoke and other airborne particulate matter for use in studying patterns of spatio-temporal propagation. The developed ABM operates on a two-dimensional plane in the landscape where agents representing forest fires emit agents representing smoke. These smoke agents propagate through the study area based on measured atmospheric conditions. The model was developed using data from the 2017 forest fire season in British Columbia (BC) and parts of Alberta, Canada, particularly during the period August 10th–25th. The obtained simulation results provided patterns of spatio-temporal propagation of fire smoke over large areas of BC and Alberta, and were compared to the real smoke patterns covering the Edmonton metropolitan area, Canada on a similar date. The developed agent-based model can be used to support the emergency planning and decision-making process such as in regulating forest fire evacuations and in the prevention of health problems triggered by the exposure to smoke.

How do we scale student participation in high-impact practices (HIPs) on campuses where there is limited supply? Student employment, not an official HIP yet, has potential to fill this gap. This article describes approaches taken by two campuses within the State University of New York (SUNY) system to transform work-study/student employment into high-impact learning experiences.

Abstract Background Although antibiotics have significantly improved human and animal health, their intensive use leads to the accumulation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment. Moreover, certain waste management practices create the ideal conditions for AMR development while providing predictable resources for wildlife. Here, we investigated the role of landfills in the potentiation of New World vultures to disseminate environmental AMR. We collected 107 samples (soil, water, and feces) between 2023 and 2024, in different bird use sites (roosts, landfills and boneyards). Results We isolated enterococci (EN), Escherichia coli (EC), and Salmonella spp. (SM), performed antibiotic susceptibility tests, and quantified the presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) within all samples. We identified EN, EC, and SM, in 50, 37, and 26 samples, from the three vulture use areas, respectively. AMR was mainly to aminoglycoside, cephalosporin, and tetracycline, and the prevalence of multidrug resistance (MDR) was 5.3% (EC), 78.2% (EN), and 17.6% (SM). Variations in bacterial abundance and AMR/MDR profiles were found based on the season, use site, and sample types, which was corroborated by ARG analyses. Conclusions Our study suggests that landfills constitute a source of zoonotic pathogens and AMR for wildlife, due to readily available refuse input. Using non-invasive molecular methods, we highlight an often-ignored ecosystem within the One Health paradigm.

We find that wintertime temperature anomalies near 4 hPa and 50° N/S are related, through dynamics, to anomalies in ozone and temperature, particularly in the tropical stratosphere but also throughout the upper stratosphere and mesosphere. These mid-latitude anomalies occur on timescales of up to a month, and are related to changes in wave forcing. A change in the meridional Brewer–Dobson circulation extends from the middle stratosphere into the mesosphere and forms a temperature-change quadrupole from Equator to pole. We develop a dynamical index based on detrended, deseasonalised mid-latitude temperature. When employed in multiple linear regression, this index can account for up to 60 % of the total variability of temperature, peaking at ∼ 5 hPa and dropping to 0 at ∼ 50 and ∼ 0.5 hPa, respectively, and increasing again into the mesosphere. Ozone similarly sees up to an additional 50 % of variability accounted for, with a slightly higher maximum and strong altitude dependence, with zero improvement found at 10 hPa. Further, the uncertainty on all equatorial multiple-linear regression coefficients can be reduced by up to 35 and 20 % in temperature and ozone, respectively, and so this index is an important tool for quantifying current and future ozone recovery.

The Community Earth System Model (CESM1) CAM4-chem has been used to perform the Chemistry Climate Model Initiative (CCMI) reference and sensitivity simulations. In this model, the Community Atmospheric Model version 4 (CAM4) is fully coupled to tropospheric and stratospheric chemistry. Details and specifics of each configuration, including new developments and improvements are described. CESM1 CAM4-chem is a low-top model that reaches up to approximately 40 km and uses a horizontal resolution of 1.9° latitude and 2.5° longitude. For the specified dynamics experiments, the model is nudged to Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) reanalysis. We summarize the performance of the three reference simulations suggested by CCMI, with a focus on the last 15 years of the simulation when most observations are available. Comparisons with selected data sets are employed to demonstrate the general performance of the model. We highlight new data sets that are suited for multi-model evaluation studies. Most important improvements of the model are the treatment of stratospheric aerosols and the corresponding adjustments for radiation and optics, the updated chemistry scheme including improved polar chemistry and stratospheric dynamics and improved dry deposition rates. These updates lead to a very good representation of tropospheric ozone within 20 % of values from available observations for most regions. In particular, the trend and magnitude of surface ozone is much improved compared to earlier versions of the model. Furthermore, stratospheric column ozone of the Southern Hemisphere in winter and spring is reasonably well represented. All experiments still underestimate CO most significantly in Northern Hemisphere spring and show a significant underestimation of hydrocarbons based on surface observations.

Elementary teachers likely have many opportunities to improve their science subject matter knowledge in the context of their everyday work. However, this has not been sufficiently explored in the literature. The purpose of this exploratory study is to investigate teachers' self-regulated learning of science subject matter knowledge as a result of teaching experience. All teachers in this study recognized and described moments where they determined their subject matter knowledge was inadequate, an important step of self-regulated learning. Findings also indicate that teachers' recognition of gaps in their knowledge may be influenced by teachers' perceptions of the complexity of their students' questions. In response to recognizing gaps in their knowledge, teachers drew on online resources. They were, however, generally not critical about the quality of these resources. We discuss these observations in relation to teachers' self-regulated learning of science subject matter through teaching experience.

Schools in England are required to have an anti-bullying policy. A revised 42-item scoring scheme was used to report a content analysis of 200 anti-bullying policies. On average, school policies had 61% of items. Chi-square comparisons found an increase in policy coverage from 2008 to 2022, notably for mentioning cyber bullying and many types of bias-based bullying; but comparisons are limited by different sampling procedures. Despite good coverage in some areas, fewer than 25% of policies mentioned responsibilities of other school staff, suggested how to help the pupil(s) doing the bullying to change their behaviour, gave advice to parents about bullying, or discussed specific powers to deal with cyberbullying and out-of school bullying. For 131 schools, correlations of self-report scores on bullying victimisation and perpetration with the overall policy score were negative but very small. Ways to improve school policy coverage, and the impact they may have, are discussed.

This original paper, based on data from the Erasmus+Blurred Lives Project, presents a new multi-dimensional categorisation model to describe negative online experiences, including forms of cyberbullying, based on a study of internet usage among over N = 2,500 adolescents with lower socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds across five European countries. The paper first sets out the rationale for the development of a new coding system, before describing the current study and nature of the survey data collected. There follows a description of the development of the new system and the series of reliability checks undertaken by the research team (N= 11, from 5 countries) and of the refinements made to the categories and codes. The resulting coding system is presented with consideration of the strengths and limitations, and description of two early pilot studies which have successfully adopted the new system.

The response of the stratosphere to the combined interaction of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and the solar cycle in ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and the influence of the solar cycle on the QBO, are investigated using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM). Transient simulations were performed beginning in 1850 that included fully interactive ocean and chemistry model components, observed greenhouse gas concentrations, volcanic eruptions, and an internally generated QBO. Over the full length of the simulations we do not find a solar cycle modulation of either the QBO period or amplitude. We also do not find a persistent wintertime UV response in polar stratospheric geopotential heights when stratifying by the QBO phase. Over individual ~40 year periods of the simulation, a statistically significant correlation is sometimes found between the northern polar geopotential heights in February and UV irradiance during the QBO's westerly phase. However, the sign of the correlation varies over the simulation, and is never significant during the QBO's easterly phase. Complementing this is the analysis of four simulations using a QBO prescribed to match observations over the period 1953–2005. Again, no consistent correlation is evident. In contrast, over the same period, meteorological reanalysis shows a strong positive correlation during the QBO westerly phase, although it weakens as the period is extended. The results raise the possibility that the observed polar solar–QBO correlation may have occurred because of the relatively short data record and the presence of additional external forcings rather than a direct solar–QBO interaction.

Abstract The decays of the B + meson to the final state D ∗ − D s + π + $$ {D}^{\ast -}{D}_s^{+}{\pi}^{+} $$ are studied in proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1. The ratio of branching fractions of the B + → D ∗ − D s + π + $$ {B}^{+}\to {D}^{\ast -}{D}_s^{+}{\pi}^{+} $$ and B 0 → D ∗ − D s + $$ {B}^0\to {D}^{\ast -}{D}_s^{+} $$ decays is measured to be 0.173 ± 0.006 ± 0.010, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Using partially reconstructed D s ∗ + → D s + γ $$ {D}_s^{\ast +}\to {D}_s^{+}\gamma $$ and D s + π 0 $$ {D}_s^{+}{\pi}^0 $$ decays, the ratio of branching fractions between the B + → D ∗ − D s ∗ + π + $$ {B}^{+}\to {D}^{\ast -}{D}_s^{\ast +}{\pi}^{+} $$ and B + → D ∗ − D s + π + $$ {B}^{+}\to {D}^{\ast -}{D}_s^{+}{\pi}^{+} $$ decays is determined as 1.31 ± 0.07 ± 0.14. An amplitude analysis of the B + → D ∗ − D s + π + $$ {B}^{+}\to {D}^{\ast -}{D}_s^{+}{\pi}^{+} $$ decay is performed for the first time, revealing dominant contributions from known excited charm resonances decaying to the D *− π + final state. No significant evidence of exotic contributions in the D s + π + $$ {D}_s^{+}{\pi}^{+} $$ or D ∗ − D s + $$ {D}^{\ast -}{D}_s^{+} $$ channels is found. The fit fraction of the scalar state T c s ¯ 0 ∗ 2900 + + $$ {T}_{c\overline{s}0}^{\ast }{(2900)}^{++} $$ observed in the B + → D − D s + π + $$ {B}^{+}\to {D}^{-}{D}_s^{+}{\pi}^{+} $$ decay is determined to be less than 2.3% at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract A search for radiative decay of B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ mesons to orbitally excited K + K − states is performed using proton proton collisions recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1. The dikaon spectrum in the mass range m KK < 2400 MeV/c 2 is dominated by the ϕ(1020) resonance that accounts for almost 70% of the decay rate. Considering the possible contributions of f 2(1270), f 2 ′ $$ {f}_2^{\prime } $$ (1525) and f 2(2010) meson states, the overall tensor contribution to the amplitude is measured to be F f 2 = 16.8 ± 0.5 stat . ± 0.7 syst . % , $$ {\mathcal{F}}_{\left\{{f}_2\right\}}=16.8\pm 0.5\left(\textrm{stat}.\right)\pm 0.7\left(\textrm{syst}.\right)\%, $$ mostly dominated by the f 2 ′ $$ {f}_2^{\prime } $$ (1525) state. Several statistically equivalent solutions are obtained for the detailed resonant structure depending on whether the smaller amplitudes interfere destructively or constructively with the dominant amplitude. The preferred solution that corresponds to the lowest values of the fit fractions along with constructive interference leads to the relative branching ratio measurement B B s 0 → f 2 ′ γ B B s 0 → ϕγ = 19.4 − 0.8 + 0.9 stat . − 0.5 + 1.4 syst . ± 0.5 B % , $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}\left({B}_s^0\to {f}_2^{\prime}\gamma \right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({B}_s^0\to \phi \gamma \right)}={19.4}_{-0.8}^{+0.9}{\left(\textrm{stat}.\right)}_{-0.5}^{+1.4}\left(\textrm{syst}.\right)\pm 0.5\left(\mathcal{B}\right)\%, $$ where the last uncertainty is due to the ratio of measured branching fractions to the K + K − final state. This result represents the first observation of the radiative B s 0 → f 2 ′ 1525 γ $$ {B}_s^0\to {f}_2^{\prime }(1525)\gamma $$ decay, which is the second radiative transition observed in the B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ sector.

Abstract Decays of Ξ b − $$ {\Xi}_b^{-} $$ and Ω b − $$ {\Omega}_b^{-} $$ baryons to Λ c + h − h ′ − $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+}{h}^{-}{h}^{\prime -} $$ final states, with h − h ′− being π − π − , K − π − and K − K − meson pairs, are searched for using data collected with the LHCb detector. The data sample studied corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb −1 of pp collisions collected at centre-of-mass energies s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The products of the relative branching fractions and fragmentation fractions for each signal mode, relative to the B − → Λ c + p ¯ π − $$ {B}^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}\overline{p}{\pi}^{-} $$ mode, are measured, with Ξ b − → Λ c + K − π − $$ {\Xi}_b^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}{K}^{-}{\pi}^{-} $$ , Ξ b − → Λ c + K − K − $$ {\Xi}_b^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}{K}^{-}{K}^{-} $$ and Ω b − → Λ c + K − K − $$ {\varOmega}_b^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}{K}^{-}{K}^{-} $$ decays being observed at over 5 σ significance. The Ξ b − → Λ c + K − π − $$ {\Xi}_b^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}{K}^{-}{\pi}^{-} $$ mode is also used to measure the Ξ b − $$ {\Xi}_b^{-} $$ production asymmetry, which is found to be consistent with zero. In addition, the B − → Λ c + p ¯ K − $$ {B}^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}\overline{p}{K}^{-} $$ decay is observed for the first time, and its branching fraction is measured relative to that of the B − → Λ c + p ¯ π − $$ {B}^{-}\to {\Lambda}_c^{+}\overline{p}{\pi}^{-} $$ mode.

Solar spectral fluxes (or irradiance) measured by the SOlar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) show different variability at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths compared to other irradiance measurements and models (e.g. NRL-SSI, SATIRE-S). Some modelling studies have suggested that stratospheric/lower mesospheric O3 changes during solar cycle 23 (1996–2008) can only be reproduced if SORCE solar fluxes are used. We have used a 3-D chemical transport model (CTM), forced by meteorology from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), to simulate middle atmospheric O3 using three different solar flux data sets (SORCE, NRL-SSI and SATIRE-S). Simulated O3 changes are compared with Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) and Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) satellite data. Modelled O3 anomalies from all solar flux data sets show good agreement with the observations, despite the different flux variations. The off-line CTM reproduces these changes through dynamical information contained in the analyses. A notable feature during this period is a robust positive solar signal in the tropical middle stratosphere, which is due to realistic dynamical changes in our simulations. Ozone changes in the lower mesosphere cannot be used to discriminate between solar flux data sets due to large uncertainties and the short time span of the observations. Overall this study suggests that, in a CTM, the UV variations detected by SORCE are not necessary to reproduce observed stratospheric O3 changes during 2001–2010.

Horizontal winds in the mesosphere have been measured over Ascension Island (8° S, 14° W) in the tropical mid-Atlantic region throughout the years 2002–2011. The observations were made by a very high frequency (VHF) meteor radar. The observations reveal the presence of atmospheric tides of large amplitude. The observations are analysed to characterise the seasonal and interannual variability of the diurnal and semidiurnal tides. Monthly-mean diurnal tidal amplitudes are found to reach values as large as 48 m s−1 in the meridional component and 41 m s−1 in the zonal. A semiannual seasonal variation is found in diurnal tidal amplitudes with amplitude maxima at the equinoxes and amplitude minima at the solstices. Diurnal tidal meridional vertical wavelengths are generally in the range 24–30 km. The diurnal zonal vertical wavelengths are similar to the meridional, except for the winter months when the zonal vertical wavelengths are much longer, occasionally exceeding 100 km. Semidiurnal amplitudes are observed to be significantly smaller than diurnal amplitudes. Semidiurnal vertical wavelengths range from 20 to more than 100 km. Our observations of tidal amplitudes and phases are compared with the predictions of the extended Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model (eCMAM) and the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM). Both eCMAM and WACCM reproduce the trend for greater diurnal amplitudes in the meridional component than the zonal. However, eCMAM tends to overestimate meridional amplitudes, while WACCM underestimates both zonal and meridional amplitudes. Vertical wavelength predictions are generally good for both models; however, eCMAM predicts shorter diurnal zonal vertical wavelengths than are observed in winter, while WACCM predicts longer zonal vertical wavelengths than observed for the semidiurnal tide for most months. Semidiurnal amplitude predictions are generally good for both models. It is found that larger-than-average diurnal and semidiurnal tidal amplitudes occur when the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) at 10 hPa is eastwards, and smaller-than-average amplitudes occur when it is westwards. Correlations between the amplitude perturbations and the El Niño Southern Oscillation are also found. The precise mechanism for these correlations remains unclear.

BackgroundPersistent disability in chronic stroke survivors is often attributed to arm or leg weakness; however, respiratory muscle weakness also impedes poststroke rehabilitation, reduces quality of life, and increases the risk of health complications. Respiratory complications are common after stroke and place patients at risk for both prolonged functional disability and mortality. In addition, stroke survivors face ongoing cardiovascular disease that places them at risk for recurrent stroke. ObjectiveThe study aims to compare the effects of 2 respiratory training programs, paired with individualized flexibility, strengthening, and cardiovascular exercise programs, on physiologic, activity, and societal participation outcomes in chronic stroke survivors. MethodsThis study will be a randomized controlled trial. Participants are 80 community-dwelling adults with chronic stroke. In conjunction with a 24-session (3 times/week for 8 weeks), American Heart Association–informed, whole-body exercise program, participants will be randomized to receive either respiratory strength training or respiratory relaxation training. Study intervention will be directed by a physical therapist and take place in a community fitness center. Outcome assessments will occur in a clinical research center. The primary outcome measure is maximal respiratory pressure. Secondary outcome measures include airway clearance, walking endurance, spatial-temporal gait characteristics, community walking, functional strength and fatigue, depression, and societal participation measures. Longer-term societal participation is a complex domain that may be influenced by other factors beyond physical function. Participants’ health status will be monitored for 1 year following the intervention for falls, respiratory illness, and hospitalizations. Additional subanalyses will evaluate the effect of smoke exposure on short- and long-term outcomes. Outcome assessors are blinded to group assignments. Respiratory relaxation training is an active comparator, but no pure control group is included. ResultsThis study was funded in March 2020 with enrollment commencing in November 2020. Completion of enrollment is projected for May 2025 with a study projected end date of April 2026. Published results are anticipated in Fall 2026. ConclusionsResults from this study will improve our understanding of the additive benefits of respiratory exercises on short- and long-term physiologic, functional, and societal gains for these individuals. These data will be instructive to meet a current unmet rehabilitative need to promote patient-centered care and contribute to decreasing morbidity and mortality in chronic stroke survivors. Abstract Immunoglobulin E (IgE)‐mediated food allergies are the most common type of food allergy, often causing rapid symptoms after exposure to allergens posing a serious health risk and a high impact on patient's and caregiver's quality of life. Omalizumab, a humanized anti‐IgE monoclonal antibody, reduces allergic reactions by binding to circulating IgE. Omalizumab has been successfully used in allergic asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, and chronic urticaria, and was recently approved for treating IgE‐mediated food allergies by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This GA2LEN ANACARE Consensus Statement presents our position on the use of omalizumab for treating IgE‐mediated food allergies, based on a systematic review and meta‐analysis, experience with use for other conditions, and expert consensus achieved via an eDelphi process. Following publication of the recent OUtMATCH study (stage 1) results and subsequent FDA approval, we propose that there is now sufficient evidence to recommend omalizumab as the only drug currently available that can mechanistically reduce IgE‐mediated food allergic reactions. We acknowledge that the evidence does not reach the highest level of evidence which would be needed for a guideline recommendation.

IntroductionOpen educational resources (OERs) provide instructors access to no-cost lesson materials they can incorporate into their courses. OER lessons can promote the use of innovative and evidence-based educational practices in biology education. Prior research suggests that teaching strategies are often implemented in different ways which can impact student learning. However, few studies have explored how OER lessons are modified to fit their local context.MethodsWe used the teacher-curriculum framework to understand how and why instructors modify these materials. Additionally, we explored how these materials supported instructors in enacting national priorities from Vision and Change. We surveyed 139 instructors who implemented lessons published in CourseSource, a peer-reviewed journal specifically designed to share OERs.ResultsWe found that the majority of instructors who used the lesson materials (e.g., slides, worksheets, assessments, protocols) did so without making substantial modifications, in contrast with prior research. Furthermore, we found that these materials were particularly helpful in incorporating student-centered teaching practices, like group work or discussions, sometimes for the first time.DiscussionThese insights into what instructors value in lesson materials can inform OER publishing guidelines so that these materials best meet instructional needs.

Among the processes governing the energy balance in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT), the quenching of CO2(ν2) vibrational levels by collisions with O atoms plays an important role. However, there is a factor of 3–4 discrepancy between the laboratory measurements of the CO2-O quenching rate coefficient, kVT, and its value estimated from the atmospheric observations. In this study, we retrieve kVT in the altitude region 85–105 km from the coincident SABER/TIMED and Fort Collins sodium lidar observations by minimizing the difference between measured and simulated broadband limb 15 μm radiation. The averaged kVT value obtained in this work is 6.5 ± 1.5 × 10−12 cm3 s−1 that is close to other estimates of this coefficient from the atmospheric observations. However, the retrieved kVT also shows altitude dependence and varies from 5.5 ± 1.1 × 10−12 cm3 s−1 at 90 km to 7.9 ± 1.2 × 10−12 cm3 s−1 at 105 km. Obtained results demonstrate the deficiency in current non-LTE modeling of the atmospheric 15 μm radiation, based on the application of the CO2-O quenching and excitation rates, which are linked by the detailed balance relation. We discuss the possible model improvements, among them accounting for the interaction of the "non-thermal" oxygen atoms with CO2 molecules.

The transportable ground based microwave radiometer MIAWARA-C monitored the upper stratospheric and lower mesospheric (USLM) water vapor distribution over Sodankylä, Finland (67.4° N, 26.6° E) from January to June 2010. At the end of January, approximately 2 weeks after MIAWARA-C's start of operation in Finland, a stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) disturbed the circulation of the middle atmosphere. Shortly after the onset of the SSW water vapor rapidly increased at pressures between 1 and 0.01 hPa. Backward trajectory calculations show that this strong increase is due to the breakdown of the polar vortex and meridional advection of subtropical air to the Arctic USLM region. In addition, mesospheric upwelling in the course of the SSW led to an increase in observed water vapor between 0.1 and 0.03 hPa. After the SSW MIAWARA-C observed a decrease in mesospheric water vapor volume mixing ratio (VMR) due to the subsidence of H2O poor air masses in the polar region. Backward trajectory analysis and the zonal mean water vapor distribution from the Microwave Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite (Aura/MLS) indicate the occurrence of two regimes of circulation from 50° N to the North Pole: (1) regime of enhanced meridional mixing throughout February and (2) regime of an eastward circulation in the USLM region reestablished between early March and the equinox. The polar descent rate determined from MIAWARA-C's 5.2 parts per million volume (ppmv) isopleth is 350 &pm; 40 m d−1 in the pressure range 0.6 to 0.06 hPa between early February and early March. For the same time interval the descent rate in the same pressure range was determined using Transformed Eulerian Mean (TEM) wind fields simulated by means of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with Specified Dynamics (SD-WACCM). The average value of the SD-WACCM TEM vertical wind is 325 m d−1 while the along trajectory vertical displacement is 335 m d−1. The similar descent rates found indicate good agreement between the model and MIAWARA-C's measurements.

This paper presents the thermal forcing of the semidiurnal, terdiurnal, and 6-h components of the migrating tide induced by ozone heating in stratosphere and lower mesosphere. The heating as a function of local time is determined from the global ozone observed by the Microwave Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite. The harmonic components of the heating rates of the semidiurnal, terdiurnal and the 6-h periodicities are calculated using the Strobel/Zhu parameterized model and then decomposed into Hough modes. Seasonal variations of each harmonic component and its Hough modes are presented. For all three tidal components, the majority of the annual mean O3 heating projects onto symmetric modes. The semiannual variation is a prominent signal in almost all of the symmetric Hough modes near the stratopause. The strongest annual variation takes place in the asymmetric modes. The results also show that, during the solstice season, the maximum forcing of the diurnal and terdiurnal component occurs in the summer hemisphere while the maximum forcing of the semidiurnal and 6-h components occurs in the winter hemisphere. The global mean ozone density and the tidal components of the ozone heating rate are different between December–January and June–July. The asymmetry in the heating is primarily due to the 6.6% annual variation in the solar energy input into the Earth's atmosphere due to the annual variation of the Sun-Earth distance.

We present spatio-temporal distributions of the tertiary ozone maximum (TOM), based on GOMOS (Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars) ozone measurements in 2002–2006. The tertiary ozone maximum is typically observed in the high-latitude winter mesosphere at an altitude of ~72 km. Although the explanation for this phenomenon has been found recently – low concentrations of odd-hydrogen cause the subsequent decrease in odd-oxygen losses – models have had significant deviations from existing observations until recently. Good coverage of polar night regions by GOMOS data has allowed for the first time to obtain spatial and temporal observational distributions of night-time ozone mixing ratio in the mesosphere. The distributions obtained from GOMOS data have specific features, which are variable from year to year. In particular, due to a long lifetime of ozone in polar night conditions, the downward transport of polar air by the meridional circulation is clearly observed in the tertiary ozone maximum time series. Although the maximum tertiary ozone mixing ratio is achieved close to the polar night terminator (as predicted by the theory), TOM can be observed also at very high latitudes, not only in the beginning and at the end, but also in the middle of winter. We have compared the observational spatio-temporal distributions of the tertiary ozone maximum with that obtained using WACCM (Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model) and found that the specific features are reproduced satisfactorily by the model. Since ozone in the mesosphere is very sensitive to HOx concentrations, energetic particle precipitation can significantly modify the shape of the ozone profiles. In particular, GOMOS observations have shown that the tertiary ozone maximum was temporarily destroyed during the January 2005 and December 2006 solar proton events as a result of the HOx enhancement from the increased ionization.

Ebola virus (EBOV) is one of three filovirus members of the Orthoebolavirus genus that can cause severe Ebola disease (EBOD) in humans. Transmission predominantly occurs from spillover events from wildlife but has also happened between humans with infected bodily fluids. Specifically, the sexual route through infectious male survivors could be the origin of flare up events leading to the deaths of multiple women. More studies are needed to comprehend this route of infection which has recently received more focus. The use of microbicides prior to intercourse is of interest if neither of the Ebola vaccines are an option. These experimental products have been used against sexually transmitted diseases, and recently polyphenylene carboxymethylene (PPCM) showed efficacy against EBOV in vitro. Shortly after, the first animal model of EBOV sexual transmission was established using type I interferon receptors (IFNAR−/−) knockout female mice in which mortality endpoint could be achieved. Here, we investigated PPCM efficacy against a mouse-adapted (ma)EBOV isolate in IFNAR−/− mice and demonstrated that 4% PPCM gel caused a 20% reduction in mortality in two distinct groups compared to control groups when inoculated prior to virus challenge. Among animals that succumbed to disease despite PPCM treatment, we report an increase in median survival time as well as a less infectious virus, and fewer virus positive vaginal swabs compared to those from vehicle-treated animals, altogether indicating the beneficial effect of using PPCM prior to exposure. A post-study analysis of the different gel formulations tested indicated that buffering the gels would have prevented an increase in acidity seen only in vehicles, suggesting that PPCM antiviral efficacy against EBOV was suboptimal in our experimental set-up. These results are encouraging and warrant further studies using optimized stable formulations with the goal of providing additional safe protective countermeasures from sexual transmission of EBOV in humans.

Organic reaction mechanisms lie at the heart of developing an understanding of how the molecular world functions. However, many students simply try to memorize mechanisms, or use their knowledge of the reagent and product to create a mechanism that "works". This is not helped by the content-heavy organic chemistry curriculum which focuses on rapidly progressing through a range of reaction types and functional groups. For some students, especially nonchemistry majors, OrgChem101 becomes a "rite of passage" to be endured, learned and forgotten. This paper presents an alternative way of introducing students to organic reaction mechanisms, in which mechanistic rationale and thinking is explicitly taught to students, in a simple logical way, before they meet any specific reactions. In particular, to facilitate this, a series of "priority rules" have been developed. These priority rules help students find reactive sites and predict curly arrow mechanisms, even when faced with previously unseen reagents. This approach is designed to empower students to think about organic molecules in a different way, focusing on reactivity and structure. This enables students to realize that they can predict reactions of which they have no prior knowledge by proposing plausible mechanisms from first principles. This approach to mechanistic teaching sits alongside contextualized examples and allows students to rapidly see how the principles they are learning can help them solve real-world problems-ensuring that they develop not only a mechanistic view of the molecular world but also a motivation to learn more.

Oral demonstration of knowledge is an effective learning and assessment strategy. It has been shown that generating explanations to oneself, or self-explaining, can improve student understanding of information. This can be achieved via student-generated videos. The quantitative effects of student-generated videos on learning and assessment in postsecondary education are unknown. To our knowledge, this is the first study to analyze the effects asynchronous student-generated videos have on student learning and assessment in a large-enrollment ([approximately] 400 students), undergraduate physiology course. Students were charged with making self-generated videos discussing major physiological concepts and uploading these videos to Flip for assessment. Flip is an online, social education platform for asynchronous video-based discussion. In the present study, we combined four semesters (n = 1,100 students) of Flip data and analyzed the effects it had on student examination performance. Specifically, we first analyzed how students performed on exam questions corresponding to their Flip prompts in comparison to students not assigned those prompts [25/44 (57%) were statistically significantly different]. Second, we analyzed the association between Flip prompt score and performance on corresponding exam questions [39/44 (89%) were statistically significantly different]. Third, we analyzed the association between cumulative Flip score and performance on all corresponding, and noncorresponding exam questions. Finally, we analyzed the association between cumulative Flip score and averaged exam performance. There was a positive association (r = 0.54). Taken together, our data suggest that asynchronous student-generated Flip videos can facilitate student learning and assessment in a large-enrollment, undergraduate physiology course.

A physical chemistry lab for undergraduate students described in this report is about applying kinetic models to analyze the spread of COVID-19 in the United States and obtain the reproduction numbers. The susceptible-infectious-recovery (SIR) model and the SIR-vaccinated (SIRV) model are explained to the students and are used to analyze the COVID-19 spread data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The basic reproduction number R[subscript 0] and the real-time reproduction number R[subscript t] of COVID-19 are extracted by fitting the data with the models, which explains the spreading kinetics and provides a prediction of the spreading trend in a given state. The procedure outlined here shows the differences between the SIR model and the SIRV model. The SIRV model considers the effect of vaccination, which helps explain the later stages of the ongoing pandemic. The predictive power of the models is also shown giving the students some certainty in the predictions they made for the following months.
