Photoreceptors are highly specialized sensory neurons that possess a modified primary cilium called the outer segment. Photoreceptor outer segment formation and maintenance require highly active protein transport via a process known as intraflagellar transport. Anterograde transport in outer segments is powered by the heterotrimeric kinesin II and coordinated by intraflagellar transport proteins. Here, we describe a new zebrafish model carrying a nonsense mutation in the kinesin II family member 3A (kif3a) gene. Kif3a mutant zebrafish exhibited curved body axes and kidney cysts. Outer segments were not formed in most parts of the mutant retina, and rhodopsin was mislocalized, suggesting KIF3A has a role in rhodopsin trafficking. Both rod and cone photoreceptors degenerated rapidly between 4 and 9 days post fertilization, and electroretinography response was not detected in 7 days post fertilization mutant larvae. Loss of KIF3A in zebrafish also resulted in an intracellular transport defect affecting anterograde but not retrograde transport of organelles. Our results indicate KIF3A plays a conserved role in photoreceptor outer segment formation and intracellular transport.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques are becoming useful as alternate approaches to conventional techniques. They have been used to solve complicated practical problems and now a day is very popular. They can learn from examples, fault tolerant in the sense they are able to handle noisy and incomplete data and once trained can perform faster prediction and generalization. AI based systems are used mainly because of their symbolic reasoning, flexibility and explanation capabilities. This paper briefly presents the main AI techniques and outlines an application in boiler control. Master controller is required for a steam generating system having multiple boilers operating in parallel. AI technique of Fuzzy logic controller is proposed as master controller. The optimum performance of individual boilers is achieved by the master controller meeting the varying load demands of the steam system.

This paper begins with a description of the curve tracing problem and compares it with curve extraction, a fundamentally different problem. Issues concerning curve tracing are addressed. We discuss a good curve tracing algorithm proposed by Carsten Steger and improve this method to suit the goals of curve tracing. Results show that the improved algorithm emulates human perception by using both global and local features.

Visualization of results for high performance computing pose special problems due to the complexity and the volume of data these systems manipulate. We present an approach for visualization of c-DNA microarray gene expression data in metabolic and regulatory pathways using multi-resolution animation at different levels of detail. We describe three scoring functions to characterize pathways at the transcriptional level based on gene expression, coregulation and cascade effect. We also assess the significance of each pathway score on the basis of their biological connotation.

Background Intrapartum fetal monitoring with STAN has the potential to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and decrease obstetric interventions. Intrapartum monitoring with STAN was introduced in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee in October 2007. Aim To assess whether increased use of STAN was associated with a reduction in fetal blood sampling (FBS). Furthermore our aims were to determine the rates of operative delivery and neonatal metabolic acidosis. Methods Women who delivered after 37 weeks between 01 January 2007 and 31 December 2009 were included. All cardiotocograph recordings were reviewed. Information about outcomes was obtained from the local maternity database (Torex Protos Evolution, version 3.5.19). Results Intrapartum monitoring with STAN increased from 45/188 (23.9%) in October 2007 to 105/148 (70.9%) in December 2009 (p Conclusion Intrapartum monitoring with STAN has increased and this has been associated with a significant reduction in FBS and operative vaginal deliveries at term. However there has been no significant change in rates of severe neonatal metabolic acidosis.

3-Aminomethylpyridine and some of its derivatives are either drug materials or insecticides. A simple electrolytic reduction method for the preparation of 3-aminomethylpyridine dihydrochloride using deposited palladium black over graphite is described. This technique should be generally useful for the preparation of primary amines.
