Abstract Neutrino oscillation experiments provide a unique window in exploring several new physics scenarios beyond the standard three flavour. One such scenario is quantum decoherence in neutrino oscillation which tends to destroy the interference pattern of neutrinos reaching the far detector from the source. In this work, we study the decoherence in neutrino oscillation in the context of the ESSnuSB experiment. We consider the energy-independent decoherence parameter and derive the analytical expressions for P μe and P μμ probabilities in vacuum. We have computed the capability of ESSnuSB to put bounds on the decoherence parameters namely, Γ21 and Γ32 and found that the constraints on Γ21 are competitive compared to the DUNE bounds and better than the most stringent LBL ones from MINOS/MINOS+. We have also investigated the impact of decoherence on the ESSnuSB measurement of the Dirac CP phase δ CP and concluded that it remains robust in the presence of new physics.

ESSnuSB is a design study for an experiment to measure the CP violation in the leptonic sector at the second neutrino oscillation maximum using a neutrino beam driven by the uniquely powerful ESS linear accelerator. The reduced impact of systematic errors on sensitivity at the second maximum allows for a very precise measurement of the CP violating parameter. This review describes the fundamental advantages of measurement at the second maximum, the necessary upgrades to the ESS linac in order to produce a neutrino beam, the near and far detector complexes, and the expected physics reach of the proposed ESSnuSB experiment, concluding with the near future developments aimed at the project realization.

Abstract Background A limitation of traditional differential expression analysis on small datasets involves the possibility of false positives and false negatives due to sample variation. Considering the recent advances in deep learning (DL) based models, we wanted to expand the state-of-the-art in disease biomarker prediction from RNA-seq data using DL. However, application of DL to RNA-seq data is challenging due to absence of appropriate labels and smaller sample size as compared to number of genes. Deep learning coupled with transfer learning can improve prediction performance on novel data by incorporating patterns learned from other related data. With the emergence of new disease datasets, biomarker prediction would be facilitated by having a generalized model that can transfer the knowledge of trained feature maps to the new dataset. To the best of our knowledge, there is no Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based model coupled with transfer learning to predict the significant upregulating (UR) and downregulating (DR) genes from both trained and untrained datasets. Results We implemented a CNN model, DEGnext, to predict UR and DR genes from gene expression data obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas database. DEGnext uses biologically validated data along with logarithmic fold change values to classify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) as UR and DR genes. We applied transfer learning to our model to leverage the knowledge of trained feature maps to untrained cancer datasets. DEGnext’s results were competitive (ROC scores between 88 and 99 $$\%$$ % ) with those of five traditional machine learning methods: Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbors, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, and XGBoost. DEGnext was robust and effective in terms of transferring learned feature maps to facilitate classification of unseen datasets. Additionally, we validated that the predicted DEGs from DEGnext were mapped to significant Gene Ontology terms and pathways related to cancer. Conclusions DEGnext can classify DEGs into UR and DR genes from RNA-seq cancer datasets with high performance. This type of analysis, using biologically relevant fine-tuning data, may aid in the exploration of potential biomarkers and can be adapted for other disease datasets.

Abstract The Phytophtora root and stem rot is a serious disease in soybean. It is caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora sojae. Growing Phytophthora resistant cultivars is the major method of controlling this disease. Resistance is race- or gene-specific; a single gene confers immunity against only a subset of the P. sojae isolates. Unfortunately, rapid evolution of new Phytophthora sojae virulent pathotypes limits the effectiveness of an Rps (“resistance to Phytophthora sojae”) gene to 8–15 years. The current study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of Rps12 against a set of P. sojae isolates using recombinant inbred lines (RILs) that contain recombination break points in the Rps12 region. Our study revealed a unique Rps gene linked to the Rps12 locus. We named this novel gene as Rps13 that confers resistance against P. sojae isolate V13, which is virulent to recombinants that contains Rps12 but lack Rps13. The genetic distance between the two Rps genes is 4 cM. Our study revealed that two tightly linked functional Rps genes with distinct race-specificity provide broad-spectrum resistance in soybean. We report here the molecular markers for incorporating the broad-spectrum Phytophthora resistance conferred by the two Rps genes in commercial soybean cultivars.

In the present analysis, the Dufour and Soret effects on unsteady heat-mass transfer of a viscous incompressible Powell-Eyring fluids flow past an expanding/shrinking permeable sheet are reported. The fluid boundary layer develops over the variable sheet with suction/injection to the non-uniform free stream velocity. Under the symmetry group of transformations, the governing equations along with three independent variables, are converted into a system of PDEs with two independent variables. Finally, by employing the order-reduction technique the PDEs are transformed into ODEs, which are then solved numerically. The results are presented graphically and analyzed. The main advantage of this technique is that without any prior knowledge, one can easily find the scaling transformations, expanding velocity, suction/injection velocity, and free-stream velocity. From computed numerical results many important findings are obtained. Most importantly, thermal and concentration overshoots are found for larger values of Dufour and Soret numbers, respectively. Also, thermal and concentration crossing over found for different values of Soret and Dufour numbers, respectively.

Treatment options for men with moderate-to-severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) have variable efficacy, safety, and retreatment profiles, contributing to variations in patient quality of life and healthcare costs. This study examined the long-term cost-effectiveness of generic combination therapy (CT), prostatic urethral lift (PUL), water vapor thermal therapy (WVTT), photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP), and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for the treatment of BPH. A systematic literature review was performed to identify clinical trials of CT, PUL, WVTT, PVP, and TURP that reported change in International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) for men with BPH and a prostate volume ≤80 cm3. A random-effects network meta-analysis was used to account for the differences in patient baseline clinical characteristics between trials. An Excel-based Markov model was developed with a cohort of males with a mean age of 63 and an average IPSS of 22 to assess the cost-effectiveness of these treatment options at 1 and 5 years from a US Medicare perspective. Procedural and adverse event (AE)-related costs were based on 2021 Medicare reimbursement rates. Total Medicare costs at 5 years were highest for PUL ($9,580), followed by generic CT ($8,223), TURP ($6,328), PVP ($6,152), and WVTT ($2,655). The total cost of PUL was driven by procedural ($7,258) and retreatment ($1,168) costs. At 5 years, CT and PUL were associated with fewer quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) than WVTT, PVP, and TURP. Compared to WVTT, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) for both TURP and PVP were above a willingness-to-pay threshold of $50,000/QALY (TURP: $64,409/QALY; PVP: $87,483/QALY). This study provides long-term cost-effectiveness evidence for several common treatment options for men with BPH. WVTT is an effective and economically viable treatment in resource-constrained environments.
