1. Varying Calcium Abundances in Solar Flares Seen by the Solar Maximum Mission

Abstract: We report on calcium abundance A (Ca) estimates during the decay phases of 194 solar X-ray flares using archived data from the Bent Crystal Spectrometer (BCS) on the Solar Maximum Mission (operational 1980–1989). The abundances are derived from the ratio of the total calcium X-ray line emission in BCS channel 1 to that in neighboring continuum, with temperature from a satellite-to-resonance line ratio. Generally, the calcium abundance is found to be about 3 times the photospheric abundance, as previously found, indicating a “first ionization potential” (FIP) effect for calcium, which has a relatively low FIP value. The precision of the abundance estimates (referred to hydrogen on a logarithmic scale with A (H) = 12), is typically ∼± 0.01, enabling any time variations of A (Ca) during the flare decay to be examined. For a total of 270 short time segments with A (Ca) determined to better than 2.3% accuracy, many (106; 39%) showed variations in A (Ca) at the 3 σ level. For the majority, in 74 (70%) of these 106 segments A (Ca) decreased with time, and for 32 (30%) A (Ca) increased with time. For 79 out of 270 (29%) we observed constant or nearly constant A (Ca), and the remaining 85 (31%) with irregular time behavior. A common feature was the presence of discontinuities in the time behavior of A (Ca). Relating these results to the ponderomotive force theory of Laming, we attribute the nature of varying A (Ca) to the emergence of loop structures in addition to the initial main loop, each with its characteristic calcium abundance.

Abstract: In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

4. Fast and Knowledge-Free Deep Learning for General Game Playing (Student Abstract)

Abstract: We develop a method of adapting the AlphaZero model to General Game Playing (GGP) that focuses on faster model generation and requires less knowledge to be extracted from the game rules. The dataset generation uses MCTS playing instead of self-play; only the value network is used, and attention layers replace the convolutional ones. This allows us to abandon any assumptions about the action space and board topology. Abstract: This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

6. Analysis of Solar-like X-Class Flare on Wolf 359 Observed Simultaneously with TESS and XMM-Newton

Abstract: We present an analysis of a flare on the Wolf 359 star based on simultaneous observations of TESS and XMM-Newton. A stellar flare with energy comparable to an X-class solar flare is analyzed on this star for the first time. The main goal of the study was to determine whether the same physical processes drive and occur in stellar flares as in the solar flares. We tried to estimate the flare class by various direct and indirect methods. Light curves and spectra in different energy ranges were used to determine the parameters and profiles of the flare. From the XMM-Newton EPIC-pn X-ray data, we estimated the temperature and emission measure during the flare. The thermodynamical timescale and the loop semi-length were also determined with two different methods. The RGS spectra enabled us to calculate the differential emission measure (DEM) distributions. The obtained DEM distributions have three components at temperature values of 3 MK, 7 MK, and 16-17 MK. The analysis of the line ratio in helium-like triplets allowed us to determine the plasma electron density. Our results for the flare loop on Wolf 359 were compared to typical parameters for solar flares observed with GOES and RHESSI. This supports our conclusion that the processes taking place in stellar flares are like those in solar flares. 7. Brane Nucleation in Supersymmetric Models

Abstract: This paper explores the process of vacuum decay in supersymmetric models related to flux compactifications. In particular, we describe these instabilities within supersymmetric Lagrangians for a single three-form multiplet. This multiplet combines scalar fields, representing the moduli fields in four dimensions, with 3-form fields that influence the potential for these moduli via the integer flux of their associated 4-form field strength. Furthermore, using supersymmetry as a guide we obtain the form of the couplings of these fields to the membranes that act as sources to the 3-form potentials. Adding small supersymmetry breaking terms to these Lagrangians one can obtain instanton solutions describing the decay of the vacua in these models by the formation of a membrane bubble. These instantons combine the usual Coleman-de Luccia and the Brown-Teitelboim formalisms in a single unified model. We study simple numerical examples of theories with and without gravity in this new framework and generalize known Euclidean methods to accomodate the simulataneous inclusion of scalar fields and charged membranes to these instanton solutions. Moreover, we show explicitly in these examples how one recovers the static supersymmetric solutions in the limiting case where the supersymmetry breaking terms vanish. In this limit, the bubble becomes infinite and flat and represents a hybrid between the usual supersymmetric domain walls of field theory models and the brane solutions interpolating between the supersymmetric vacua; a sort of dressed supermembrane BPS solution. Finally, we briefly comment on the implications of these solutions in cosmological models based on the String Theory Landscape where these type of 4d effective theories could be relevant in inflationary scenarios., Comment: 33 pages + appendices, 23 figures

8. Comparative analysis of the performance of selected machine learning algorithms depending on the size of the training sample

Abstract: The article presents an analysis of the effectiveness of selected machine learning methods: Random Forest (RF), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) in the classification of land use and cover in satellite images. Several variants of each algorithm were tested, adopting different parameters typical for each of them. Each variant was classified multiple (20) times, using training samples of different sizes: from 100 pixels to 200,000 pixels. The tests were conducted independently on 3 Sentinel-2 satellite images, identifying 5 basic land cover classes: built-up areas, soil, forest, water, and low vegetation. Typical metrics were used for the accuracy assessment: Cohen’s kappa coefficient, overall accuracy (for whole images), as well as F-1 score, precision, and recall (for individual classes). The results obtained for different images were consistent and clearly indicated an increase in classification accuracy with the increase in the size of the training sample. They also showed that among the tested algorithms, the XGB algorithm is the most sensitive to the size of the training sample, while the least sensitive is SVM, which achieved relatively good results even when using training samples of the smallest sizes. At the same time, it was pointed out that while in the case of RF and XGB algorithms the differences between the tested variants were slight, the effectiveness of SVM was very much dependent on the gamma parameter – with too high values of this parameter, the model showed a tendency to overfit, which did not allow for satisfactory results.

10. Correlations of spin splitting and orbital fluctuations due to 1/f charge noise in the Si/SiGe Quantum Dot

Abstract: Fluctuations of electric fields can change the position of a gate-defined quantum dot in a semiconductor heterostructure. In the presence of magnetic field gradient, these stochastic shifts of electron's wavefunction lead to fluctuations of electron's spin splitting. The resulting spin dephasing due to charge noise limits the coherence times of spin qubits in isotopically purified Si/SiGe quantum dots. We investigate the spin splitting noise caused by such process caused by microscopic motion of charges at the semiconductor-oxide interface. We compare effects of isotropic and planar displacement of the charges, and estimate their densities and typical displacement magnitudes that can reproduce experimentally observed spin splitting noise spectra. 11. Uniqueness of Markov random fields with higher-order dependencies

Abstract: Markov random fields on a countable set $\sf V$ are studied. They are canonically set by a specification $\gamma$, for which the dependence structure is defined by a pre-modification $(h_e)_{e\in {\sf E}}$ -- a consistent family of functions $h_e : S^e\to [0,+\infty)$, where $S$ is a standard Borel space and $\sf E$ is an infinite collection of finite $e\subset {\sf V}$. Different $e$ may contain distinct number of elements, which, in particular, means that the dependence graph ${\sf H}=({\sf V}, {\sf E})$ is a hypergraph. Given $e\in {\sf E}$, let $\delta (e)$ be the logarithmic oscillation of $h_e$. The result of this work is the assertion that the set of all fields $\mathcal{G}(\gamma)$ is a singleton whenever $\delta(e)$ satisfies a condition, a particular version of which can be $\delta(e) \leq \varkappa g(n_{\sf L}(e))$, holding for all $e$ and some $\sf H$-specific $\varkappa\in (0,1)$. 13. Varying Calcium Abundances in Solar Flares seen by Solar Maximum Mission

Abstract: We report on calcium abundance $A({\rm Ca})$ estimates during the decay phases of 194 solar X-ray flares using archived data from the Bent Crystal Spectrometer (BCS) on Solar Maximum Mission (operational 1980~--~1989). The abundances are derived from the ratio of the total calcium X-ray line emission in BCS channel~1 to that in neighboring continuum, with temperature from a satellite-to-resonance line ratio. Generally the calcium abundance is found to be about three times the photospheric abundance, as previously found, indicating a ``FIP'' (first ionization potential) effect for calcium which has a relatively low FIP value. The precision of the abundance estimates (referred to hydrogen on a logarithmic scale with $A({\rm H}) = 12$), is typically $\sim \pm 0.01$, enabling any time variations of $A({\rm Ca})$ during the flare decay to be examined. For a total of 270 short time segments with $A({\rm Ca})$ determined to better than 2.3\% accuracy, many (106; 39\%) showed variations in $A({\rm Ca})$ at the $3\sigma$ level. For the majority, 74 (70\%) of these 106 segments $A({\rm Ca})$ decreased with time, and for 32 (30\%) $A({\rm Ca})$ increased with time. For 79 out of 270 (29\%) we observed constant or nearly constant $A({\rm Ca})$, and the remaining 85 (31\%) with irregular time behavior. A common feature was the presence of discontinuities in the time behavior of $A({\rm Ca})$. Abstract: Chemical reactions are usually studied under the assumption that both substrates and catalysts are well mixed (WM) throughout the system. Although this is often applicable to test-tube experimental conditions, it is not realistic in cellular environments, where biomolecules can undergo liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and form condensates, leading to important functional outcomes, including the modulation of catalytic action. Similar processes may also play a role in protocellular systems, like primitive coacervates, or in membrane-assisted prebiotic pathways. Here we explore whether the de-mixing of catalysts could lead to the formation of micro-environments that influence the kinetics of a linear (multi-step) reaction pathway, as compared to a WM system. We implemented a general lattice model to simulate LLPS of an ensemble of different catalysts and extended it to include diffusion and a sequence of reactions of small substrates. We carried out a quantitative analysis of how the phase separation of the catalysts affects reaction times depending on the affinity between substrates and catalysts, the length of the reaction pathway, the system size, and the degree of homogeneity of the condensate. A key aspect underlying the differences reported between the two scenarios is that the scale invariance observed in the WM system is broken by condensation processes. The main theoretical implications of our results for mean-field chemistry are drawn, extending the mass action kinetics scheme to include substrate initial hitting times to reach the catalysts condensate. We finally test this approach by considering open non-linear conditions, where we successfully predict, through microscopic simulations, that phase separation inhibits chemical oscillatory behaviour, providing a possible explanation for the marginal role that this complex dynamic behaviour plays in real metabolisms., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, comments welcome

Abstract: We discuss here various methodologies and an optimal strategy of the temperature and emission measure diagnostics based on Hinode X-Ray Telescope data. As an example of our results we present the determination of the temperature distribution of the X-rays emitting plasma using a filters ratio method and three various methods of the calculation of the differential emission measure (DEM). We have found that all these methods give results similar to the two filters ratio method. Additionally, all methods of the DEM calculation gave similar solutions. We can state that the majority of the pairs of the Hinode filters allows one to derive the temperature and emission measure in the isothermal plasma approximation using standard diagnostics based on the two filters ratio method. In cases of strong flares one can also expect good conformity of the results obtained using a Withbroe – Sylwester, genetic algorithm and least-squares methods of the DEM evaluation.

19. New Solar Flare Calcium Abundances with no Surprises: Results from the SMM Bent Crystal Spectrometer

Abstract: The calcium abundance in flare plasmas is estimated using X-ray spectra from the Solar Maximum Mission Bent Crystal Spectrometer (BCS) during the decays of 194 flares (GOES classifications from B6.4 to X13) occurring between 1980 and 1989. Previous work by Sylwester et al. found that the abundance varied from flare to flare. That analysis is improved on here using updated instrument parameters and by including all calcium lines viewed by the BCS instead of only the resonance line, so greatly enhancing the photon count statistics. The abundance variations are confirmed with the average abundance, $A({\rm Ca})$ (expressed logarithmically with $A({\rm H}) = 12$), equal to $6.77 \pm 0.20$ for 194 flares (141 of which are new in this study). This range corresponds to factors of between 1.7 and 7.2 larger than the photospheric abundance and so our results are in line with a ``FIP" (first ionization potential) effect whereby low-FIP elements like Ca (FIP = 6.11~eV) have enhanced coronal abundances. The Ca flare abundance is uncorrelated with solar activity indices, but weak correlations are suggested with GOES flare class and duration (larger $A({\rm Ca})$ for smaller and shorter flares). The ponderomotive force theory of Laming explaining the FIP effect gives a range of parameters within which our estimates of $A({\rm Ca})$ agree with the theory. However, this then gives rise to disagreements with previous estimates of the flare silicon and sulfur abundances, although those of argon and iron are in good agreement. Abstract: Using methods of differential evolution (DE,) we determined the coronal elemental abundances and the differential emission measure (DEM) distributions for the plasma flaring on 2003 January 21. The analyses have been based on RESIK X-ray spectra. DE belongs to the family of evolutionary algorithms. DE is conceptually simple and easy to be implemented, so it has been applied to solve many problems in science and engineering. In this study we apply this method in a new context: simultaneous determination of plasma composition and DEM . In order to increase the confidence in the results obtained using DE, we tested the use of its algorithms by comparing the DE synthesized spectra with respective spectra observed by RESIK. Extensive discussion of the DE method used and the obtained physical characteristics of flaring plasma is presented.

For years, statistics have been showing declining sales of printed press. This is mainly the case of the general-interest newspapers – national, regional, and local alike. Internet media platforms are increasingly important and often take over the role of the leading local media. Due to their limited reach, local publishers felt the losses from reduced advertising revenue and copy sales even more acutely than national publishers. Local press and small publishing teams struggled to cope with the impact of the pandemic and demand for digitization. So, what will the local press look like in the following years? How will the pandemic change the face of the local press? This study addresses these issues based on findings from desk research, case studies, and content analysis of relevant media. The result of the research is the confirmation of changes in the field of local communication, especially in its channels. The printed press arouses less and less interest among recipients and ceases to function as the fourth estate.

Abstract: Readability assessment is the task of determining how difficult or easy a text is or which level/grade it has. Traditionally, language dependent readability formula have been used, but these formulae take few text characteristics into account. However, Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools that assess the complexity of texts are able to measure more different features and can be adapted to different languages. In this paper, we present the MultiAzterTest tool: (i) an open source NLP tool which analyzes texts on over 125 measures of cohesion,language, and readability for English, Spanish and Basque, but whose architecture is designed to easily adapt other languages; (ii) readability assessment classifiers that improve the performance of Coh-Metrix in English, Coh-Metrix-Esp in Spanish and ErreXail in Basque; iii) a web tool. MultiAzterTest obtains 90.09 % in accuracy when classifying into three reading levels (elementary, intermediate, and advanced) in English and 95.50 % in Basque and 90 % in Spanish when classifying into two reading levels (simple and complex) using a SMO classifier. Abstract: In the present work, NIR, LIBS, Raman and XRD techniques have been complementarily used to carry out a comprehensive characterization of a terrestrial analogue selected from the Chesapeake Bay Impact Structure (CBIS). The obtained data clearly highlight the key role of Raman spectroscopy in the detection of minor and trace compounds, through which inferences about geological processes occurred in the CBIS can be extrapolated. Beside the use of commercial systems, further Raman analyses were performed by the Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) ExoMars Simulator. This instrument represents the most reliable tool to effectively predict the scientific capabilities of the ExoMars/Raman system that will be deployed on Mars in 2021. By emulating the analytical procedures and operational restrictions established by the ExoMars mission rover design, it was proved that the RLS ExoMars Simulator is able to detect the amorphization of quartz, which constitutes an analytical clue of the impact origin of craters. On the other hand, the detection of barite and siderite, compounds crystallizing under hydrothermal conditions, helps to indirectly confirm the presence of water in impact targets. Furthermore, the RLS ExoMars Simulator capability of performing smart molecular mappings was also evaluated. According to the obtained results, the algorithms developed for its operation provide a great analytical advantage over most of the automatic analysis systems employed by commercial Raman instruments, encouraging its application for many additional scientific and commercial purposes.

Abstract: We present the compositional analysis of three terrestrial analogues of Martian olivine-bearing rocks derived from both laboratory and flight-derived analytical instruments. In the first step, state-of-the-art spectroscopic (XRF, NIR and Raman) and diffractometric (XRD) laboratory systems were complementary used. Besides providing a detailed mineralogical and geochemical characterization of the samples, results comparison shed light on the advantages ensured by the combined use of Raman and NIR techniques, being these the spectroscopic instruments that will soon deploy (2021) on Mars as part of the ExoMars/ESA rover payload. In order to extrapolate valuable indicators of the mineralogical data that could derive from the ExoMars/Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS), laboratory results were then compared with the molecular data gathered through the RLS ExoMars Simulator. Beside correctly identifying all major phases (feldspar, pyroxene and olivine), the RLS ExoMars Simulator confirmed the presence of additional minor compounds (i.e. hematite and apatite) that were not detected by complementary techniques. Furthermore, concerning the in-depth study of olivine grains, the RLS ExoMars simulator was able to effectively detect the shifting of the characteristic double peak around 820 and 850 cm-1, from which the Fe-Mg content of the analysed crystals can be extrapolated. Considering that olivine is one of the main mineral phases of the ExoMars landing site (Oxia Planum), this study suggests that the ExoMars/RLS system has the potential to provide detailed information about the elemental composition of olivine on Mars.

Abstract: With a growing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, innovative carbon dioxide sorbents are being sought. One of the sorbents being tested is nanoparticle ferric hydrosol (FFH). In parallel with sorbent testing, it is also necessary to test the used sorbent after carbon dioxide capture (FFHCO2) and to develop an optimal method for its processing and management. The research described in this article evaluated the potential use of FFHCO2 in dewatering, coagulation and bioleaching processes. The research results indicate that the basic strategy for dealing with waste FFHCO2 sorbent should be to minimize the amount of waste by volume reduction—dewatering. Recycling of FFHCO2 as an iron waste coagulant or its processing products by bioleaching had no technological justification. It is only proposed to recover the material—iron compounds—if it is environmentally and economically justified.

At these vacua, the mass spectrum of the complete axio-dilaton/complex structure sector is given, to leading order in $\alpha'$ and $g_s$, by a simple analytic formula independent of the choice of Calabi-Yau. 43. RESIK and RHESSI observations of the 20 September 2002 flare

Abstract: Soft X-ray spectra 3.33 A - 6.15 A from the RESIK instrument on CORONAS-F constitute a unique database for the study of the physical conditions of solar flare plasmas, enabling the calculation of differential emission measures. The two RESIK channels for the shortest wavelengths overlap with the lower end of RHESSI spectral energy range, which is located around 3 keV, making it possible to compare both data sets. We aim to compare observations from RESIK and RHESSI spectrometers and cross-correlate these instruments. Observations are compared with synthetic spectra calculated based on the results of one-dimensional hydrodynamical (1D-HD) modelling. The analysis was performed for the flare on 20 September 2002. We estimated the geometry of the flaring loop, necessary for 1D-HD modelling, based on images from RHESSI and SOHO/EIT. The distribution of non-thermal electrons (NTEs) was determined from RHESSI spectra. The 1D-HD model assumes that non-thermal electrons with a power-law spectrum were injected at the apex of the flaring loop. The NTEs then heat and evaporate the chromosphere, filling the loop with hot and dense plasma radiating in soft X-rays. The total energy of electrons was constrained by comparing observed and calculated fluxes from GOES 1 - 8 A data. We determined the temperature and density at every point of the flaring loop throughout the evolution of the flare, calculating the resulting X-ray spectra. The synthetic spectra calculated based on the results of hydrodynamic modelling for the 20 September 2002 flare are consistent within a factor of two with the observed RESIK spectra during most of the duration of the flare. This discrepancy factor is probably related to the uncertainty on the cross-calibration between RESIK and RHESSI instruments.

44. Towards a complete mass spectrum of type-IIB flux vacua at large complex structure

Abstract: The large number of moduli fields arising in a generic string theory compactification makes a complete computation of the low energy effective theory infeasible. A common strategy to solve this problem is to consider Calabi-Yau manifolds with discrete symmetries, which effectively reduce the number of moduli and make the computation of the truncated Effective Field Theory possible. In this approach, however, the couplings (e.g., the masses) of the truncated fields are left undetermined. In the present paper we discuss the tree-level mass spectrum of type-IIB flux compactifications at Large Complex Structure, focusing on models with a reduced one-dimensional complex structure sector. We compute the tree-level spectrum for the dilaton and complex structure moduli, \emph{including the truncated fields}, which can be expressed entirely in terms of the known couplings of the reduced theory. We show that the masses of this set of fields are naturally heavy at vacua consistent with the KKLT construction, and we discuss other phenomenologically interesting scenarios where the spectrum involves fields much lighter than the gravitino. We also derive the probability distribution for the masses on the ensemble of flux vacua, and show that it exhibits universal features independent of the details of the compactification. We check our results on a large sample of flux vacua constructed in an orientifold of the Calabi-Yau $\mathbb{WP}^4_{[1,1,1,1,4]}$. Finally, we also discuss the conditions under which the spectrum derived here could arise in more general compactifications., Comment: 75 pages, 16 figures

46. Nothing is certain in string compactifications

Abstract: A bubble of nothing is a spacetime instability where a compact dimension collapses. After nucleation, it expands at the speed of light, leaving "nothing" behind. We argue that the topological and dynamical mechanisms which could protect a compactification against decay to nothing seem to be absent in string compactifications once supersymmetry is broken. The topological obstruction lies in a bordism group and, surprisingly, it can disappear even for a SUSY-compatible spin structure. As a proof of principle, we construct an explicit bubble of nothing for a $T^3$ with completely periodic (SUSY-compatible) spin structure in an Einstein dilaton Gauss-Bonnet theory, which arises in the low-energy limit of certain heterotic and type II flux compactifications. Without the topological protection, supersymmetric compactifications are purely stabilized by a Coleman-deLuccia mechanism, which relies on a certain local energy condition. This is violated in our example by the nonsupersymmetric GB term. In the presence of fluxes this energy condition gets modified and its violation might be related to the Weak Gravity Conjecture. We expect that our techniques can be used to construct a plethora of new bubbles of nothing in any setup where the low-energy bordism group vanishes, including type II compactifications on $CY_3$, AdS flux compactifications on 5-manifolds, and M-theory on 7-manifolds. This lends further evidence to the conjecture that any non-supersymmetric vacuum of quantum gravity is ultimately unstable., Comment: 87 pages + appendices (including a 16-page shortened version), 15 figures

47. A Unique Resource for Solar Flare Diagnostic Studies: the SMM Bent Crystal Spectrometer

Abstract: The Bent Crystal Spectrometer (BCS) on the NASA Solar Maximum Mission spacecraft observed the X-ray spectra of numerous solar flares during the periods 1980 February to November and 1984~--~1989. The instrument, the first of its kind to use curved crystal technology, observed the resonance lines of He-like Ca (\caxix) and Fe (\fexxv) and neighboring satellite lines, allowing the study of the rapid evolution of flare plasma temperature, turbulence, mass motions etc. To date there has not been a solar X-ray spectrometer with comparable spectral and time resolution, while subsequent solar cycles have delivered far fewer and less intense flares. The BCS data archive thus offers an unparalleled resource for flare studies. A recent re-assessment of the BCS calibration and its operations is extended here by using data during a spacecraft scan in the course of a flare on 1980 November~6 that highlights small deformations in the crystal curvature of the important channel~1 (viewing lines of \caxix\ and satellites). The results explain long-standing anomalies in spectral line ratios which have been widely discussed in the past. We also provide an in-flight estimation of the BCS collimator field of view which improves the absolute intensity calibration of the BCS. The BCS channel~1 background is shown to be entirely due to solar continuum radiation, confirming earlier analyses implying a time-variable flare abundance of Ca. We suggest that BCS high-resolution \caxix\ and \fexxv\ line spectra be used as templates for the analysis of X-ray spectra of non-solar sources., Comment: To be published, Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: Because COVID-19 has been recognised as one of the most important pandemics in the history of humankind, in recent years many scientists have investigated the effect of the disease on various aspects of mental and physical human health. This article presents a literature review regarding the effect of SARS CoV-2 infection on the symptoms, diagnostics, and treatment of diabetes. It discusses the effect of infection with virus SARS-CoV-2 on the course of type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as the frequency of occurrence of the disease in patients affected by COVID-19. Moreover, it presents information on the pharmacotherapy and way of providing services by doctors during the pandemic. According to the literature, infection with virus SARS CoV-2 causes a general inflammation of the organisms and numerous metabolic and hormonal disturbances, and therefore affects the course of diabetes. It may lead not only to serious metabolic complications in the course of early diabetes, but also to the development of the disease. It was determined that infection with COVID-19 in diabetes patients (mainly type 2) increases the risk of complications (such as acute respiratory failure, multi-organ failure, and death).

49. A Multiwavelength Analysis of the Long-duration Flare Observed on 15 April 2002

Abstract: We present a multiwavelength analysis of the long duration flare observed on 15 April 2002 (soft X-ray peak time at 03:55 UT, SOL2002-04-15T03:55). This flare occurred on the disk (S15W01) in NOAA 9906 and was observed by a number of space instruments including the Extreme-Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO/EIT), the RESIK spectrometer onboard the Coronas-F spacecraft, and the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). We have performed a complex analysis of these measurements and studied the morphology and physical parameters characterizing the conditions in flaring plasmas. The 195 A SOHO/EIT images have been used to study evolution of flaring loops. Analysis of RHESSI data provided the opportunity for a detailed analysis of hard X-ray emission with 1 keV energy resolution. We have used Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) observations for isothermal interpretation of the X-ray measurements. Temperature diagnostics of the flaring plasma have been carried out by means of a differential emission measure (DEM) analysis based on RESIK X-ray spectra.
