Abstract The clownfish-anemone association exemplifies a symbiosis where both members benefit from nutrient exchange and protection from predators. Clownfish also perform aeration-like behaviour in their host anemones at night, but it is not yet known whether this is stimulated by the onset of hypoxia, and whether both members benefit from O2 replenishment. Oxygen at 3 distances above the sea anemone Entacmaea quadricolor (0.2, 1.2 and 2.2 cm) therefore was measured under 3 light levels (photon flux density = 0, 55 and 110 µmol m−2 s−1), with and without the anemonefish Amphiprion frenatus. An evaluation of water vapor in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) of the ERA-Interim, the global atmospheric reanalysis produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), is presented. Water vapor measurements are derived from the Fast In situ Stratospheric Hygrometer (FISH) during a large set of airborne measurement campaigns from 2001 to 2011 in the tropics, midlatitudes and polar regions, covering isentropic layers from 300 to 400K (5–18km). The comparison shows around 87% of the reanalysis data are within a factor of 2 of the FISH water vapor measurements and around 30% have a nearly perfect agreement with an over- and underestimation lower than 10%. Nevertheless, strong over- and underestimations can occur both in the UT and LS, in particularly in the extratropical LS and in the tropical UT, where severe over- and underestimations up to 10 times can occur. The analysis data from the evolving ECMWF operational system is also evaluated, and the FISH measurements are divided into time periods representing different cycles of the Integrated Forecast System (IFS). The agreement with FISH improves over the time, in particular when comparing water vapor fields for time periods before 2004 and after 2010. It appears that influences of tropical tropospheric and extratropical UTLS processes, e.g., convective and quasi-isentropic exchange processes, are particularly challenging for the simulation of the UTLS water vapor distribution. Both the reanalysis and operational analysis data show the tendency of an overestimation of low water vapor mixing ratio (⪅10ppmv) in the LS and underestimation of high water vapor mixing ratio (⪆300ppmv) in the UT.

We discuss the use of potential vorticity (PV) based equivalent latitude (EqLat) and potential temperature (θ) coordinates in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) for chemical transport studies. The main objective is to provide a cautionary note on using EqLat-θ coordinates for aggregating chemical tracers in the UTLS. Several examples are used to show 3-D distributions of EqLat together with chemical constituents for a range of θ. We show that the use of PV-θ coordinates may not be suitable for several reasons when tropospheric processes are an important part of a study. Due to the different static stability structures between the stratosphere and troposphere, the use of θ as a vertical coordinate does not provide equal representations of the UT and LS. Since the θ surfaces in the troposphere often intersect the surface of the Earth, the θ variable does not work well distinguishing the UT from the boundary layer when used globally as a vertical coordinate. We further discuss the duality of PV/EqLat as a tracer versus as a coordinate variable. Using an example, we show that while PV/EqLat serves well as a transport tracer in the UTLS region, it may conceal the chemical structure associated with wave breaking when used as a coordinate to average chemical tracers. Overall, when choosing these coordinates, considerations need to be made not only based on the time scale of PV being a conservative tracer, but also the specific research questions to be addressed.

Während in den Lössgebieten Mitteleuropas die Lössstratigraphie und die menschliche Besiedlung der Lössgebiete sowohl eiszeitlich wie auch im Holozän gut bekannt sind, liegen zu den Sandlössgebieten der Altmoränengebiete keine neueren Erkenntnisse zur zeitlichen Stellung der Sedimente oder zur Siedlungsgeschichte und zum Einfluss auf die Bodenentwicklung vor. In der Arbeit werden aus einem Sandlössgebiet in der Lüneburger Heide zwei Bodenprofile vorgestellt deren Gliederung einen Einblick in die Genese der vergangenen 10 000 Jahre erlaubt. Die Profile wurden sedimentologisch, pedologisch und palynologisch untersucht und charakterisiert. Die Datierung der Profile erfolgte mittels optisch stimulierter Lumineszenz (OSL) und Radiokarbondatierung. Die Ergebnisse legen einen menschlichen Einfluss auf die Böden ab dem späten Neolithikum nahe. Darunter sind Erosions- und Akkumulationsprozesse und insbesondere eine Anreicherung mit organischem Material zu fassen. Erstmals können mit dieser Studie Datierungen von Sedimenten und Böden des Altmoränengebietes präsentiert werden.

A statistical analysis for the comparability of water (H2O) and ozone (O3) data sets sampled during the SPURT aircraft campaigns and the MOZAIC passenger aircraft flights is presented. The Kolmogoroff-Smirnoff test reveals that the distribution functions from SPURT and MOZAIC trace gases differ from each other with a confidence of 95%. A variance analysis shows a different variability character in both trace gas data sets. While the SPURT H2O data only contain atmospheric processes variable on a diurnal or synoptical timescale, MOZAIC H2O data also reveal processes, which vary on inter-seasonal and seasonal timescales. The SPURT H2O data set does not represent the full MOZAIC H2O variance in the UT/LS for climatological investigations, whereas the variance of O3 is much better represented. SPURT H2O data are better suited in the stratosphere, where the MOZAIC RH sensor looses its sensitivity.

Pathogenic microorganisms surviving in dry products have regularly led to recalls and foodborne disease outbreaks. Therefore, the microbiological quality of 61 dried mushrooms samples purchased online and in supermarkets were analyzed. Counts of aerobic mesophiles (AMCs), Enterobacteriaceae (EB), yeasts and molds, presumptive Bacillus cereus (pBC), the presence of Salmonella spp., and L. monocytogenes were investigated. Isolates of pBC were screened for their partial panC gene sequences and their toxin genes’ profiles. The microbiological quality of the dried mushrooms investigated in this study was generally found to be acceptable. Average AMCs, EB, yeasts, and molds were 3.9 log, 1.1 log, 1.6 log, and 1.5 log cfu/g, respectively. All mushroom samples tested negative for Salmonella spp. and L. monocytogenes. Presumptive BC were detected in 59.0% of the samples, but the contamination level was low (1.0 to 3.4 log cfu/g). None of the isolates were positive for the ces gene. Incomplete labeling was found in 45.9% of the samples, mainly in the form of missing heating instructions (31.1%) and/or country of origin (16.3%). Contamination by pathogens can occur in dried mushrooms. Adequate information on home cooking practices is essential to reduce the risk of foodborne illness to the consumer and to provide a safe food product.

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica is a zoonotic bacterial pathogen that causes foodborne outbreaks in humans. Lytic bacteriophages to control Salmonella in food production are already being used in scientific studies and some are commercially available. However, phage application is still controversial. In addition to virulent phages, which are used in phage therapy and lyse the bacterial host, lysogenic phages coexist in the environment and can reside as prophages in the bacterial host. Therefore, information about Salmonella prophages is essential to understand successful phage therapy. In 100 Salmonella food isolates of the serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium, we propagated prophages by oxidative stress. In isolates of the serovars Typhimurium and Enteritidis, 80% and 8% prophages could be activated, respectively. In the phage lysates from the serovar Typhimurium, the following antibiotic resistance genes or gene fragments were detected by PCR: sul1, sul2, blaTEM, strA and cmlA; however, no tetA,B,C, blaOXA, blaCMY, aadA1, dfr1,2 or cat were detected. In contrast, no resistance genes were amplified in the phage lysates of the serovar Enteritidis. None of the phage lysates was able to transduce phenotypic resistance to WT 14028s. Most of the prophage lysates isolated were able to infect the various Salmonella serovars tested. The high abundance of prophages in the genome of the serovar Typhimurium may counteract phage therapy through phage resistance and the development of hybrid phages.

The Disc Acceleration eXperiment (DAX) is one of the most recent experimental methods of performance characterization of new energetic materials. A cylindrical explosive charge accelerates a thin metallic disc and its velocity is measured continuously using photonic Doppler velocimetry. The detonation velocity is measured simultaneously. The DAX test can be used to obtain the Chapman-Jouguet (CJ) detonation pressure and to describe detonation products expansion using reduced amount of explosive. A series of DAX tests was performed at various charge diameters and disc thicknesses with Semtex 1 A plastic bonded explosive and sensitized nitromethane. The DAX-like evaluation was also applied to previously measured data of Semtex 1A and A-IX-1 explosives. The optimum disc thickness is determined by the disc to explosive mass ratio of 0.01e0.08. The repeatability of the Semtex 1 A detonation pressure results is about four times lower compared to the pressed and liquid explosives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
