1. Refining the sea surface identification approach for determining freeboards in the ICESat-2 sea ice products

Abstract

In Release 001 and 002 of the ICESat-2 sea ice products, candidate height segments used to estimate the reference sea surface height for freeboard calculations included two surface types: specular and smooth dark leads. We found that the uncorrected photon rates, used as proxies of surface reflectance, are attenuated due to clouds resulting in the potential misclassification of sea ice as dark leads, biasing the reference sea surface height relative to those derived from the more reliable specular returns. This results in higher reference sea surface heights and lower estimated ice freeboards. The resolution of available cloud flags from the ICESat-2 atmosphere data product is too coarse to provide useful filtering at the lead segment scale. In Release 003, we have modified the surface-reference-finding algorithm so that only specular leads are used. The consequence of this change can be seen in the composites of mean freeboard of the Arctic and Southern oceans. Broadly, coverages have decreased by ∼10–20 % because there are fewer leads (by excluding the dark leads), and the composite means have increased by 0–4 cm because of the use of more consistent specular leads.

Since 2009, the ultra-wideband snow radar on Operation IceBridge (OIB; a NASA airborne mission to survey the polar ice covers) has acquired data in annual campaigns conducted during the Arctic and Antarctic springs. Progressive improvements in radar hardware and data processing methodologies have led to improved data quality for subsequent retrieval of snow depth. Existing retrieval algorithms differ in the way the air–snow (a–s) and snow–ice (s–i) interfaces are detected and localized in the radar returns and in how the system limitations are addressed (e.g., noise, resolution). In 2014, the Snow Thickness On Sea Ice Working Group (STOSIWG) was formed and tasked with investigating how radar data quality affects snow depth retrievals and how retrievals from the various algorithms differ. The goal is to understand the limitations of the estimates and to produce a well-documented, long-term record that can be used for understanding broader changes in the Arctic climate system. Here, we assess five retrieval algorithms by comparisons with field measurements from two ground-based campaigns, including the BRomine, Ozone, and Mercury EXperiment (BROMEX) at Barrow, Alaska; a field program by Environment and Climate Change Canada at Eureka, Nunavut; and available climatology and snowfall from ERA-Interim reanalysis. The aim is to examine available algorithms and to use the assessment results to inform the development of future approaches. We present results from these assessments and highlight key considerations for the production of a long-term, calibrated geophysical record of springtime snow thickness over Arctic sea ice.

Abstract

Contemporary climate warming over the Arctic is accelerating mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet through increasing surface melt, emphasizing the need to closely monitor its surface mass balance in order to improve sea-level rise predictions. Snow accumulation is the largest component of the ice sheet's surface mass balance, but in situ observations thereof are inherently sparse and models are difficult to evaluate at large scales. Here, we quantify recent Greenland accumulation rates using ultra-wideband (2–6.5 GHz) airborne snow radar data collected as part of NASA's Operation IceBridge between 2009 and 2012. We use a semiautomated method to trace the observed radiostratigraphy and then derive annual net accumulation rates for 2009–2012. The uncertainty in these radar-derived accumulation rates is on average 14 %. A comparison of the radar-derived accumulation rates and contemporaneous ice cores shows that snow radar captures both the annual and long-term mean accumulation rate accurately. A comparison with outputs from a regional climate model (MAR) shows that this model matches radar-derived accumulation rates in the ice sheet interior but produces higher values over southeastern Greenland. Our results demonstrate that snow radar can efficiently and accurately map patterns of snow accumulation across an ice sheet and that it is valuable for evaluating the accuracy of surface mass balance models.

10. Modeling and Simulation Credibility Assessments of Musculoskeletal Computational Models for Simulating Astronaut Injuries Due to a Poor Spacesuit Fit

Abstract

The musculoskeletal (MS) system of astronauts is subject to physiological changes, potentially leading to injuries due to the exposure to different gravitational environments experienced during spaceflight. These injuries can occur while an astronaut is performing an Extravehicular Activity (EVA) in space, on lunar or planetary surfaces or while wearing a spacesuit during terrestrial training for an EVA. The OpenSim MS modeling software can assess EVA induced MS injury mechanisms such as muscle strains, ligament injuries and joint injuries. One area of concern, since there are only a few different spacesuit sizes with limited adjustability, is the possibility of a poorly fitting spacesuit. This can cause unnatural joint motions and torques resulting in various MS injuries. A credibility assessment of the OpenSim modeling and simulation procedures is performed per NASA-STD-7009A to provide information on the credibility of the model’s use in simulating EVA related injury mechanisms. The credibility assessment evaluated various OpenSim models against the following eight credibility factors: data pedigree, input pedigree, code verification, solution verification, conceptual validation, referent validation, results uncertainty and results robustness (sensitivity). The models evaluated for EVA injuries will require additional credibility factor analysis and upgrades to the model features, such as adding ligaments to a whole-body model, to reliably predict and analyze the EVA injuries expected to occur due to a poor spacesuit fit. The degree of elevation strategy required to increase the credibility assessment scores will depend on the model complexity and the injury mechanism.

We investigated the relationship between health anxiety, symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, and coping mechanisms in the general population and among students. The study was conducted on Romanian population (n = 759), aged between 18-70 years old (M = 33.24), general population (n = 485), and students (n = 274). The results showed that the general population is more anxious when confronted with the new virus compared to students (t (757) = 1.902, p < .05, p = .029). Following the analysis of the hierarchical regression, the results revealed that when controlling the health anxiety variable, a high level of anxiety symptoms and stress, and a low level of depression symptoms could predict anxiety for COVID-19 (R.sup.2 = .070, F.sub.change(3, 754) = 16.759, p Ë .001). Also, we found that maladaptive strategies are the ones which explain the relationship between health anxiety and COVID-19-related anxiety (95% CI = .011 - .057). The results of this study bring extra knowledge and shed new light on the psychological aspects of the current sanitary crisis and contribute to the understanding of the way people relate to this disease.

Este trabajo despliega la pertenencia “específica” o “más propia” de ciertas maneras del ser (p.e. existencia, ser-a-la-mano) a ciertos entes, tema que Heidegger menciona, pero no profundiza. La exposición se articula en cuatro pasos. Primero, se aclara la confusa con-ceptualidad de las maneras del ser. Segundo, se indaga el vínculo entre las maneras del ser y los entes, considerando a ambos como fenómenos y mostrando en ello la imposibilidad de captar este vínculo y la consecuente pertenencia específica según un “subjetivismo” u “objetivismo”. Tercero, se acredita la propuesta principal de esta investigación, a saber, el rasgo fenoménico, ni subjetivo ni objetivo, de la pertenencia específica de las maneras del ser a los entes y la posibilidad de su modificabilidad. Cuarto, se aborda el existir preteoré-tico del Dasein en cuanto el suelo analítico en que se explicita hermenéutico-fenomenológicamente la pertenencia específica y su modificabilidad.

23. Psychotherapeutic Interventions for LGBTQ+ Youth: A Systematic Review

Abstract

LGBTQ+ youth are at elevated risk for suicidality, substance use, and other mental health concerns. Evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions are often the first line treatment for mental health concerns. However, there is limited research examining the effectiveness of such interventions among LGBTQ+ adolescents. This systematic review synthesizes extant literature examining psychotherapeutic interventions for LGBTQ+ adolescents with mental illness and/or substance use. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, studies were assessed for inclusion eligibility. Researchers consulted three electronic databases, yielding a total of 666 results. Ten studies, with interventions ranging from drug use prevention to school-counseling, met inclusion criteria. Seven studies implemented adaptations to standard intervention protocol to make intervention content more accessible to LGBTQ+ clients. Outcomes included decreased depressive symptoms, substance use, and social isolation. Significant design and methodological limitations were present across most studies, with four using a case study design and only two using a randomized controlled trial design. The review highlights preliminary evidence supporting the use of mental health interventions for LGBTQ+ youth. However, more rigorous research is needed to determine if adapted interventions that include population-specific concerns of minority stress are more effective than treatment as usual.

Abstract

Computational finite element (FE) models are used in suited astronaut injury risk assessments; however, these models’ verification, validation, and credibility (VV&C) procedures for simulating injuries in altered gravity environments are limited. Our study conducts VV&C assessments of THUMS and Elemance whole-body FE models for predicting suited astronaut injury biomechanics using eight credibility factors, as per NASA-STD-7009A. Credibility factor ordinal scores are assigned by reviewing existing documentation describing VV&C practices, and credibility sufficiency thresholds are assigned based on input from subject matter experts. Our results show the FE models are credible for suited astronaut injury investigation in specific ranges of kinematic and kinetic conditions correlating to highway and contact sports events. Nevertheless, these models are deficient when applied outside these ranges. Several credibility elevation strategies are prescribed to improve models’ credibility for the NASA-centric application domain.

Public administrator is a new function, which was introduced into the Romanian legislation by the Law no. 286/2006 amending and supplementing Law no. 215/2001; the management contract, under which public administrators carry out their responsibilities, is not defined either by legislation or by doctrine, because there are various opinions in the specialty literature ranging from its qualification as a labour contract to the civil nature of this legal relationship. In this article, we try to provide a basis for the administrative contract view about the management contract concluded between a public administrator and the public executive authority within an administrative territorial unit.

30. Aquagenic urticaria associated with anaphylaxis, urticarial vasculitis, skin ulcerations, and systemic lupus erythematosus: A rare case study.

Abstract

Aquagenic urticaria is a very rare form of physical urticaria with less than 50 cases reported in the medical literature. The condition causes itchy and potentially painful hives to break out whenever the sufferer comes into contact with water, sweat, or tears. A relationship between chronic urticaria and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been suggested in the literature. However, aquagenic urticaria has rarely been reported in association with other systemic conditions and is not typically a life-threatening condition. There are no documented cases of aquagenic urticaria occurring together with SLE or small vessel vasculitis, or presenting with cutaneous lesions more serious than urticaric wheals. This report presents a rare case of a 43-year-old African-American woman with aquagenic urticaria, who developed unusually painful skin ulcerations and life-threatening wheezing after contact with water, remained misdiagnosed for over five years, and, subsequently developed several serious comorbidities, including SLE. The case seems to suggest that aquagenic urticaria, urticarial vasculitis, and SLE may be related disorders that potentially developed along one spectrum of disease. As diagnosis of the condition is challenging and the use of water intraorally is essential to performing most dental procedures, the article aims to raise awareness of the condition among dentists and physicians and provides tips and suggestions to help manage patients with aquagenic urticaria more effectively. Abstract

Background: Intestinal transplantation (ITx) represents the only curative option for patients with irreversible intestinal failure. Nevertheless, its rejection rate surpasses that of other solid organ transplants due to the heightened immunological load of the gut. Regulatory T-cells (Tregs) are key players in the induction and maintenance of peripheral tolerance, suggesting their potential involvement in modulating host vs. graft responses after ITx. Thus, we investigated the association of Tregs with allograft outcomes in pediatric patients and in an experimental model of small bowel transplantation. Methods: Treg frequency in human samples was analyzed by Flow cytometry (CD4+CD25highCD127-, blood samples) and immunohistochemistry (FoxP3, graft samples). Experimental allogenic-heterotopic small bowel transplantation was performed in rats and animals divided into 3 groups: non-immunosuppressant treatment, rapamycin (2 mg/kg), and tacrolimus (0.6 mg/kg) treatment. Acute cellular rejection (ACR) was diagnosed based on clinical and histological findings, graft gene expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators assessed by RT-qPCR, serum IL-6 and IL-10 levels by Luminex, and Treg frequency analyzed by flow cytometry (CD4+CD25highFoxP3+). Results: Blood samples from patients undergoing ACR exhibited a significant reduction in the Treg number compared to those with normo-functional grafts. Similarly, a diminished number of FoxP3+ cells was observed in mucosa samples with ACR. In the experimental model, rapamycin-treated animals displayed clinical and histological findings resembling those not receiving immunosuppression treatment. Notably, ACR correlated with a high CD8/CD4 ratio, loss of T-cell chimerism, mRNA upregulation of pro-inflammatory genes and diminished graft Treg frequency. In contrast, tacrolimus treatment prevented ACR and facilitate blood and graft Treg expansion. Remarkably, recipients who achieved Treg expansion within the graft remained free of ACR even after discontinuation of the immunosuppressant treatment and this phenomenon was associated with increased levels of serum IL-10. Conclusion: Our clinical and experimental findings underscore the association between Treg frequency and graft rejection after ITx, advocating for strategies that promote their expansion within the gut mucosa to enhance long-term outcomes. La perspective d’un développement touristique imminent pour l’archipel Mergui (Birmanie) a engendré divers processus de valorisation culturelle et de patrimonialisation de l’environnement et de la culture moken, passant de l’implication de ces nomades marins dans les aires marines protégées à la production d’artisanat pour l’industrie touristique. Les premiers essais de marchandisation de leur culture font écho aux enjeux et attentes des différents acteurs impliqués dans l’arène du développement de l’archipel (pêcheurs birmans, entrepreneurs touristiques, ONG, gouvernement). Dans ce contexte, et à la demande des Moken, les auteurs ont développé un projet participatif de Cartographie de leur espace social (CartES) permettant d’explorer les savoirs collectifs (construits et transmis via la littérature orale) relatifs à l’anthropisation du territoire. Cette CartES a pour objectif de construire une représentation identitaire avec et pour les Moken dont la transposition muséale reflétera la complexité des interrelations matérielles et idéelles entre la société et son environnement naturel. À la croisée de l’anthropologie et de la muséologie, le présent article explore la portée et les limites de cette démarche en s’attardant sur l’analyse des dynamiques d’expression, d’adhésion et de conflits à l’égard de la production d’un patrimoine moken et les dynamiques identitaires qu’elle soulève.

Abstract

NASA’s ICESat-2 mission launched in September 2018 carrying a single instrument, the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS). ATLAS uses a high-repetition-rate, low-pulse-energy laser with its output split into six beams and a photon-counting receiver to measure Earth surface elevation with centimeter-level precision, repeating its ground track every 91 days. During more than four years of on-orbit operation, ATLAS has met or exceeded its lifetime and performance requirements. We present performance measurements, trends and projections for several instrument parameter, including transmitted laser pulse energy, receiver sensitivity, the instrument’s impulse response, transmitter/receiver alignment, dead-time behavior, and elevation measurement performance. The laser energy setting was increased in September 2023, for the first time, to maintain ranging performance at its early mission level. The trends in instrument parameters indicate capability to continue on-orbit operation of ATLAS for many years into the future.
