High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We show that axion dark matter in the range meV $\lesssim m_a\lesssim$ 100 meV can incoherently excite phonons in crystal targets with unpolarised nuclear spins. This can occur through its coupling to nuclear spins and/or through its induced time-dependent electric dipole moment in nuclei. Due to the random orientation of the nuclear spins, translation symmetry is broken in the phonon effective theory, allowing axion absorption to create phonons with unrestricted momentum. The absorption rate is therefore proportional to the phonon density of states, which generically has support across a wide range of energies, allowing for a broadband detection scheme. We calculate the absorption rate for solid $\text{H}_2$, $\text{D}_2$, $\text{Al}_2\text{O}_3$, $\text{GaAs}$, $\text{H}_2\text{O}$, $\text{D}_2\text{O}$, $\text{Be}$ and $\text{Li}_2 \text{O}$, and find that materials containing light, non-zero spin nuclei are the most promising. The predicted rates for the QCD axion are of the order of a few events / 10 kg-year exposure, setting an ambitious target for the required exposure and background suppression., Comment: 14+4 pages, 2 figures. Coven and Meyerowitz formulated two conditions which have since been conjectured to characterize all finite sets that tile the integers by translation. By periodicity, this conjecture is reduced to sets which tile a finite cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_M$. In this paper we consider a natural relaxation of this problem, where we replace sets with nonnegative functions $f,g$, such that $f(0)=g(0)=1$, $f\ast g=\mathbf{1}_{\mathbb{Z}_M}$ is a functional tiling, and $f, g$ satisfy certain further natural properties associated with tilings. We show that the Coven-Meyerowitz tiling conditions do not necessarily hold in such generality. Such examples of functional tilings carry the potential to lead to proper tiling counterexamples to the Coven-Meyerowitz conjecture in the future.

Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models improve the efficiency and scalability of dense language models by routing each token to a small number of experts in each layer. In this paper, we show how an adversary that can arrange for their queries to appear in the same batch of examples as a victim's queries can exploit Expert-Choice-Routing to fully disclose a victim's prompt. We successfully demonstrate the effectiveness of this attack on a two-layer Mixtral model, exploiting the tie-handling behavior of the torch.topk CUDA implementation. Our results show that we can extract the entire prompt using $O({VM}^2)$ queries (with vocabulary size $V$ and prompt length $M$) or 100 queries on average per token in the setting we consider. This is the first attack to exploit architectural flaws for the purpose of extracting user prompts, introducing a new class of LLM vulnerabilities.

Computer Science - Machine Learning - Abstract
Large language models (LLMs) are susceptible to memorizing training data, raising concerns due to the potential extraction of sensitive information. Current methods to measure memorization rates of LLMs, primarily discoverable extraction (Carlini et al., 2022), rely on single-sequence greedy sampling, potentially underestimating the true extent of memorization. This paper introduces a probabilistic relaxation of discoverable extraction that quantifies the probability of extracting a target sequence within a set of generated samples, considering various sampling schemes and multiple attempts. This approach addresses the limitations of reporting memorization rates through discoverable extraction by accounting for the probabilistic nature of LLMs and user interaction patterns. Our experiments demonstrate that this probabilistic measure can reveal cases of higher memorization rates compared to rates found through discoverable extraction. We further investigate the impact of different sampling schemes on extractability, providing a more comprehensive and realistic assessment of LLM memorization and its associated risks. Our contributions include a new probabilistic memorization definition, empirical evidence of its effectiveness, and a thorough evaluation across different models, sizes, sampling schemes, and training data repetitions.

We present results from data acquired by the SENSEI experiment at SNOLAB after a major upgrade in May 2023, which includes deploying 16 new sensors and replacing the copper trays that house the CCDs with a new light-tight design. We observe a single-electron event rate of $(1.39 \pm 0.11) \times 10^{-5}$ e$^-$/pix/day, corresponding to $(39.8 \pm 3.1)$ e$^-$/gram/day. This is an order-of-magnitude improvement compared to the previous lowest single-electron rate in a silicon detector and the lowest for any photon detector in the near-infrared-ultraviolet range. We use these data to obtain a 90% confidence level upper bound of $1.53 \times 10^{-5}$ e$^-$/pix/day and to set constraints on sub-GeV dark matter candidates that produce single-electron events. We hypothesize that the data taken at SNOLAB in the previous run, with an older tray design for the sensors, contained a larger rate of single-electron events due to light leaks. We test this hypothesis using data from the SENSEI detector located in the MINOS cavern at Fermilab.

We study the overfitting behavior of fully connected deep Neural Networks (NNs) with binary weights fitted to perfectly classify a noisy training set. We consider interpolation using both the smallest NN (having the minimal number of weights) and a random interpolating NN. For both learning rules, we prove overfitting is tempered. Our analysis rests on a new bound on the size of a threshold circuit consistent with a partial function. To the best of our knowledge, ours are the first theoretical results on benign or tempered overfitting that: (1) apply to deep NNs, and (2) do not require a very high or very low input dimension., Comment: 60 pages, 4 figures

Following the advancement of large language models (LLMs), the development of LLM-based autonomous agents has become increasingly prevalent. As a result, the need to understand the security vulnerabilities of these agents has become a critical task. We examine how ReAct agents can be exploited using a straightforward yet effective method we refer to as the foot-in-the-door attack. Our experiments show that indirect prompt injection attacks, prompted by harmless and unrelated requests (such as basic calculations) can significantly increase the likelihood of the agent performing subsequent malicious actions. Our results show that once a ReAct agents thought includes a specific tool or action, the likelihood of executing this tool in the subsequent steps increases significantly, as the agent seldom re-evaluates its actions. Consequently, even random, harmless requests can establish a foot-in-the-door, allowing an attacker to embed malicious instructions into the agents thought process, making it more susceptible to harmful directives. To mitigate this vulnerability, we propose implementing a simple reflection mechanism that prompts the agent to reassess the safety of its actions during execution, which can help reduce the success of such attacks.

Many extensions of the Standard Model propose the existence of new particles or forces, aiming to answer mysteries such as the identity of the elusive dark matter. Atomic-based detectors are at the forefront of technologies designed to search for these particles or forces through their couplings to fermions, enabling the testing of well-motivated models, such as axion-like particles, which could form dark matter. These detectors also probe new long-range interactions between the detectors and spin-polarized objects, as well as interactions mediated by light particles that break CP symmetry, introducing a coupling between the detector and an unpolarized object. However, the sensitivity of these detectors is often constrained by magnetic noise, limiting their effectiveness to a narrow region of parameter space. We propose and develop a technique, which we name the Rotating Wave comagnetometer (RoW comag), that can suppress magnetic noise at tunable frequencies while maintaining high sensitivity to target signals, significantly expanding the potential reach of these detectors. We analyze its operation for testing various extensions to the Standard Model and show how it could improve current sensitivities by several orders of magnitude. This work paves the way for a new class of tabletop experiments aimed at searching for new physics, including the exploration of well-motivated axion-like particle dark matter models at higher masses than previously attainable., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Background/Objectives: Cataract surgery, a very common and critical procedure for restoring vision, has outcomes that can vary based on patient demographics. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of age and sex on the risk factors, intraoperative complications, and postoperative outcomes of cataract surgery. Subjects/Methods: Conducted as a single-center retrospective cohort study, it analyzed 691 eyes from 589 individuals who underwent surgery at a tertiary referral center, utilizing data from electronic medical records to assess preoperative risk factors, intraoperative complications, and pre- and post-operative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) along with demographic data. Results: The main results highlighted that males aged 65-75 years exhibited significantly higher rates of functional postoperative BCVA (91% for males vs. 79% for females, p=0.007), a disparity that is not explained by differences in surgical complications or risk factor prevalence. Furthermore, the study identified age-specific thresholds where BCVA improvements significantly declined beyond 65 years for females and 75 years for males. The likelihood of worsened BCVA post-surgery increased with age for both sexes, with a significant decline in BCVA improvement transitioning from 55-65 years to 65-75 years age groups. Conclusions: The findings underscore the critical influence of both sex and age on cataract surgery outcomes, revealing significant sex-specific age thresholds that signal lesser improvements in postoperative BCVA. These insights advocate for the integration of patient age and sex into preoperative evaluations to better tailor the timing and planning of cataract surgery, ultimately aiming to optimize clinical outcomes.

Nonlinear Sciences - Chaotic Dynamics ,Quantum Physics - Abstract
Hyperchaos is a qualitatively stronger form of chaos, in which several degrees of freedom contribute simultaneously to exponential divergence of small changes. A hyperchaotic dynamical system is therefore even more unpredictable than a chaotic one, and has a higher fractal dimension. While hyperchaos has been studied extensively over the last decades, only a few experimental systems are known to exhibit hyperchaotic dynamics. Here we introduce hyperchaos in the context of cavity optomechanics, in which light inside an optical resonator interacts with a suspended oscillating mass. We show that hyperchaos can arise in optomechanical systems with quadratic coupling that operate in the resolved-sideband regime by applying a far off-resonance, blue-detuned pump, and is well within reach of current experiments. We compute the two positive Lyapunov exponents, characteristic of hyperchaos, and independently verify the correlation dimension. As systems designed for high-precision measurements, optomechanical systems enable direct measurement of all four dynamical variables and therefore the full reconstruction of the hyperchaotic attractor. Our results may contribute to better understanding of nonlinear systems and the chaos-hyperchaos transition, and allow the study of hyperchaos in the quantum regime., Comment: Comments welcome!

The Gottesman-Knill theorem shows that Clifford circuits operating on stabilizer states can be efficiently simulated classically. However, in the setting of interactive protocols, it has remained unclear whether Clifford strategies with shared entanglement between provers offer any advantage over classical ones. We provide a negative answer to this question, demonstrating that even when Clifford provers are additionally allowed to perform general classical operations on measured qubits $-$ a computational model for which we introduce the complexity class $\text{Clifford-MIP}^\ast$ $-$ there is no advantage over classical strategies. Our results imply that $\text{Clifford-MIP}^\ast = \text{MIP}$. Furthermore, we utilize our findings to resolve an open question posed by Kalai et al. (STOC 2023). We show that quantum advantage in any non-local game requires at least two quantum provers operating outside the $\text{Clifford-MIP}^\ast$ computational model. This rules out a suggested approach for significantly improving the efficiency of tests for quantum advantage that are based on compiling non-local games.

We study what provable privacy attacks can be shown on trained, 2-layer ReLU neural networks. We explore two types of attacks; data reconstruction attacks, and membership inference attacks. We prove that theoretical results on the implicit bias of 2-layer neural networks can be used to provably reconstruct a set of which at least a constant fraction are training points in a univariate setting, and can also be used to identify with high probability whether a given point was used in the training set in a high dimensional setting. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first to show provable vulnerabilities in this setting.

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) identifies daily activities from time-series data collected by wearable devices like smartwatches. Recent advancements in Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and low-cost sensors have broadened HAR applications across fields like healthcare, biometrics, sports, and personal fitness. However, challenges remain in efficiently processing the vast amounts of data generated by these devices and developing models that can accurately recognize a wide range of activities from continuous recordings, without relying on predefined activity training sessions. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for imputing, analyzing, and identifying activities from wearable data, specifically targeting group training scenarios without explicit activity sessions. Our approach is based on data collected from 135 soldiers wearing Garmin 55 smartwatches over six months. The framework integrates multiple data streams, handles missing data through cross-domain statistical methods, and identifies activities with high accuracy using machine learning (ML). Additionally, we utilized statistical analysis techniques to evaluate the performance of each individual within the group, providing valuable insights into their respective positions in the group in an easy-to-understand visualization. These visualizations facilitate easy understanding of performance metrics, enhancing group interactions and informing individualized training programs. We evaluate our framework through traditional train-test splits and out-of-sample scenarios, focusing on the model's generalization capabilities. Additionally, we address sleep data imputation without relying on ML, improving recovery analysis. Our findings demonstrate the potential of wearable data for accurately identifying group activities, paving the way for intelligent, data-driven training solutions.

The notion of weak tiling was a key ingredient in the proof of Fuglede's spectral set conjecture for convex bodies \cite{conv}, due to the fact that every spectral set tiles its complement weakly with a suitable Borel measure. In this paper we review the concept of weak tiling, and answer a question raised in \cite{weak} by giving an example of a set $T$ which tiles its complement weakly, but $T$ is neither spectral, nor a proper tile.

We revisit the expected sensitivity of large-scale xenon detectors to Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). Assuming current primary noise sources can be mitigated, we find that with the present discrimination power between nuclear and electron recoils, the experimental sensitivity is limited not only by atmospheric neutrinos' nuclear recoils (''nuclear recoil neutrino fog'') but also by solar neutrinos' electron-recoil events (''electron recoil neutrino fog''). While this is known by experimentalists, it is often missed or misunderstood by theorists, and we therefore emphasize this effect. We set up a realistic detector simulation to quantify the contamination of the WIMP signal from both these neutrino backgrounds. We observe that the electron-recoil background remains significant even for signal rates exceeding those of atmospheric neutrinos, as predicted by most electroweak WIMP candidates. We update the projections for the required exposure to exclude/discover a given electroweak WIMP, streamlining the computation of their signal rates and uncertainties. We show that all of the real WIMPs with zero hypercharge can be excluded (discovered) with a 50 tonne year (300 tonne year) exposure. A similar exposure will allow to probe a large portion of the viable parameter space for complex WIMP with non-zero hypercharge., Comment: 17+6 pages, 9+3 figures, GitHub link for full analysis details

Computer Science - Machine Learning - Abstract
Many recent methods aim to merge neural networks (NNs) with identical architectures trained on different tasks to obtain a single multi-task model. Most existing works tackle the simpler setup of merging NNs initialized from a common pre-trained network, where simple heuristics like weight averaging work well. This work targets a more challenging goal: merging large transformers trained on different tasks from distinct initializations. First, we demonstrate that traditional merging methods fail catastrophically in this setup. To overcome this challenge, we propose Foldable SuperNet Merge (FS-Merge), a method that optimizes a SuperNet to fuse the original models using a feature reconstruction loss. FS-Merge is simple, data-efficient, and capable of merging models of varying widths. We test FS-Merge against existing methods, including knowledge distillation, on MLPs and transformers across various settings, sizes, tasks, and modalities. FS-Merge consistently outperforms them, achieving SOTA results, particularly in limited data scenarios.

This paper introduces the hypothetical track-length fitting algorithm, a novel method for measuring the kinetic energies of ionizing particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

We introduce a new robotic system that enables a mobile robot to autonomously explore an unknown environment, build a semantic map of the environment, and subsequently update the semantic map to reflect environment changes, such as location changes of objects. Our system leverages a LiDAR scanner for 2D occupancy grid mapping and an RGB-D camera for object perception. We introduce a semantic map representation that combines a 2D occupancy grid map for geometry, with a topological map for object semantics. This map representation enables us to effectively update the semantics by deleting or adding nodes to the topological map. Our system has been tested on a Fetch robot. The robot can semantically map a 93m x 90m floor and update the semantic map once objects are moved in the environment., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. Approximately one billion years (Gyr) in the future, as the Sun brightens, Earth's carbonate-silicate cycle is expected to drive CO$_2$ below the minimum level required by vascular land plants, eliminating most macroscopic land life. Here, we couple global-mean models of temperature- and CO$_2$-dependent plant productivity for C$_3$ and C$_4$ plants, silicate weathering, and climate to re-examine the time remaining for terrestrial plants. If weathering is weakly temperature-dependent (as recent data suggest) and/or strongly CO$_2$-dependent, we find that the interplay between climate, productivity, and weathering causes the future luminosity-driven CO$_2$ decrease to slow and temporarily reverse, averting plant CO$_2$ starvation. This dramatically lengthens plant survival from 1 Gyr up to $\sim$1.6-1.86 Gyr, until extreme temperatures halt photosynthesis, suggesting a revised kill mechanism for land plants and potential doubling of the future lifespan of Earth's land macrobiota. An increased future lifespan for the complex biosphere may imply that Earth life had to achieve a smaller number of ``hard steps'' (unlikely evolutionary transitions) to produce intelligent life than previously estimated. These results also suggest that complex photosynthetic land life on Earth and exoplanets may be able to persist until the onset of the moist greenhouse transition., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures. Mathematics - Number Theory ,Mathematics - Algebraic Geometry - Abstract
In projective dimension growth results, one bounds the number of rational points of height at most $H$ on an irreducible hypersurface in $\mathbb P^n$ of degree $d>3$ by $C(n)d^2 H^{n-1}(\log H)^{M(n)}$, where the quadratic dependence in $d$ has been recently obtained by Binyamini, Cluckers and Kato in 2024 [1]. For these bounds, it was already shown by Castryck, Cluckers, Dittmann and Nguyen in 2020 [3] that one cannot do better than a linear dependence in $d$. In this paper we show that, for the mentioned projective dimension growth bounds, the quadratic dependence in $d$ is eventually tight when $n$ grows. More precisely the upper bounds cannot be better than $c(n)d^{2-2/n} H^{n-1}$ in general. Note that for affine dimension growth (for affine hypersurfaces of degree $d$, satisfying some extra conditions), the dependence on $d$ is also quadratic by [1], which is already known to be optimal by [3]. Our projective case thus complements the picture of tightness for dimension growth bounds for hypersurfaces.

Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter - Abstract
Via numerical simulations and analytical calculations, depletion forces are studied in mixtures of small and big particles that interact via soft repulsive potentials. While big particles are spherical, small particles are nonspherical with shapes that vary gradually, from squares to rods via intermediate shapes. The mixtures are studied for a wide range of densities and temperature. Depletion forces and their resulting potentials depend on the interplay of shape, temperature and density, an argument that is elaborated qualitatively and quantitatively. While in some thermodynamic conditions, depletion potentials of distinct shapes are distinguishable, in different conditions, they are very similar. Finally, I propose novel computational models and experiments for further investigation of the effect of morphology on phase separation in and out of thermal equilibrium.

We consider an imaging system tasked with estimating the angular distance between two incoherently-emitting sub-Rayleigh-separated point sources, without any prior knowledge of the centroid or the constellation and with a fixed collected-photon budget. It was shown theoretically that splitting the optical recording time into two stages -- focal-plane direct imaging to obtain a pre-estimate of the centroid, and using that estimate to center a spatial-mode sorter followed by photon detection of the sorted modes -- can achieve 10 to 100 times lower mean squared error in estimating the separation. In this paper, we demonstrate this in proof-of-concept, using a programmable mode sorter we have built using multi-plane light conversion (MPLC) using a reflective spatial-light modulator (SLM) in an emulated experiment where we use a single coherent source to characterize the MPLC to electronically piece together the signature from two closely-separated quasi-monochromatic incoherent emitters., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures in main paper, 3 pages, 8 figures in supplementary material

Mitochondrial membranes are defined by their diverse functions, complex geometries, and unique lipidomes. In the inner mitochondrial membrane, highly curved membrane folds known as cristae house the electron transport chain and are the primary sites of cellular energy production. The outer mitochondrial membrane is flat by contrast, but is critical for the initiation and mediation of processes key to mitochondrial physiology: mitophagy, interorganelle contacts, fission and fusion dynamics, and metabolite transport. While the lipid composition of both the inner mitochondrial membrane and outer mitochondrial membrane have been characterized across a variety of cell types, a mechanistic understanding for how individual lipid classes contribute to mitochondrial structure and function remains nebulous. In this review, we address the biophysical properties of mitochondrial lipids and their related functional roles. We highlight the intrinsic curvature of the bulk mitochondrial phospholipid pool, with an emphasis on the nuances surrounding the mitochondrially-synthesized cardiolipin. We also outline emerging questions about other lipid classes - ether lipids, and sterols - with potential roles in mitochondrial physiology. We propose that further investigation is warranted to elucidate the specific properties of these lipids and their influence on mitochondrial architecture and function.

We present Jamba-1.5, new instruction-tuned large language models based on our Jamba architecture. Jamba is a hybrid Transformer-Mamba mixture of experts architecture, providing high throughput and low memory usage across context lengths, while retaining the same or better quality as Transformer models. We release two model sizes: Jamba-1.5-Large, with 94B active parameters, and Jamba-1.5-Mini, with 12B active parameters. Both models are fine-tuned for a variety of conversational and instruction-following capabilties, and have an effective context length of 256K tokens, the largest amongst open-weight models. To support cost-effective inference, we introduce ExpertsInt8, a novel quantization technique that allows fitting Jamba-1.5-Large on a machine with 8 80GB GPUs when processing 256K-token contexts without loss of quality. When evaluated on a battery of academic and chatbot benchmarks, Jamba-1.5 models achieve excellent results while providing high throughput and outperforming other open-weight models on long-context benchmarks. The model weights for both sizes are publicly available under the Jamba Open Model License and we release ExpertsInt8 as open source., Comment: Webpage: https://www.ai21.com/jamba

The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

Suppose that $G$ is a graph of cardinality $\mu^+$ with chromatic number $\chi(G)\geq \mu^+$. One possible reason that this could happen is if $G$ contains a clique of size $\mu^+$. We prove that this is indeed the case when the edge relation is stable. When $G$ is a random graph (which is simple but not stable), this is not true. But still if in general the complete theory of $G$ is simple, $G$ must contain finite cliques of unbounded sizes.

We derive exact, universal, closed-form quantum Monte Carlo estimators for finite temperature energy susceptibility and fidelity susceptibility for essentially arbitrary Hamiltonians. We demonstrate how our method can be used to study quantum phase transitions without knowledge of an order parameter and without the need to design system-specific ergodic quantum Monte Carlo update rules by applying it to a class of random models., Comment: 9 pages (5 main, 2 bibliography, 3 supplement), 2 figures

Computer Science - Machine Learning - Abstract
Estimation of the Fisher Information Metric (FIM-estimation) is an important task that arises in unsupervised learning of phase transitions, a problem proposed by physicists. This work completes the definition of the task by defining rigorous evaluation metrics distMSE, distMSEPS, and distRE and introduces ClassiFIM, a novel machine learning method designed to solve the FIM-estimation task. Unlike existing methods for unsupervised learning of phase transitions, ClassiFIM directly estimates a well-defined quantity (the FIM), allowing it to be rigorously compared to any present and future other methods that estimate the same. ClassiFIM transforms a dataset for the FIM-estimation task into a dataset for an auxiliary binary classification task and involves selecting and training a model for the latter. We prove that the output of ClassiFIM approaches the exact FIM in the limit of infinite dataset size and under certain regularity conditions. We implement ClassiFIM on multiple datasets, including datasets describing classical and quantum phase transitions, and find that it achieves a good ground truth approximation with modest computational resources. Furthermore, we independently implement two alternative state-of-the-art methods for unsupervised estimation of phase transition locations on the same datasets and find that ClassiFIM predicts such locations at least as well as these other methods. To emphasize the generality of our method, we also propose and generate the MNIST-CNN dataset, which consists of the output of CNNs trained on MNIST for different hyperparameter choices. Using ClassiFIM on this dataset suggests there is a phase transition in the distribution of image-prediction pairs for CNNs trained on MNIST, demonstrating the broad scope of FIM-estimation beyond physics., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

Advanced AI assistants combine frontier LLMs and tool access to autonomously perform complex tasks on behalf of users. While the helpfulness of such assistants can increase dramatically with access to user information including emails and documents, this raises privacy concerns about assistants sharing inappropriate information with third parties without user supervision. To steer information-sharing assistants to behave in accordance with privacy expectations, we propose to operationalize contextual integrity (CI), a framework that equates privacy with the appropriate flow of information in a given context. In particular, we design and evaluate a number of strategies to steer assistants' information-sharing actions to be CI compliant. Our evaluation is based on a novel form filling benchmark composed of human annotations of common webform applications, and it reveals that prompting frontier LLMs to perform CI-based reasoning yields strong results.

ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

We present an experimental demonstration of an ideal direct imaging coronagraph design capable of achieving the quantum limits of exoplanet detection and localization by using spatial mode filtering. Our benchtop experimental implementation performs a forward and inverse pass through a free-space programmable spatial mode sorter configured to isolate photons in a point spread function (PSF)-adapted mode basis. During the forward pass, the fundamental mode is rejected, effectively eliminating light from an on-axis point-like star. On the inverse pass, the remaining modes are coherently recombined, enabling direct imaging of a faint companion. Our experimental system is able to localize an artificial exoplanet at sub-diffraction distances from its host star with a 1000:1 star-planet contrast ratio. The ability to resolve faint companions of a host star at sub-diffraction scale is crucial to further the discovery of exoplanets predicted to reside in the sub-diffraction regime. These exoplanets are currently beyond the reach of state-of-the-art coronagraphs, which typically have an inner working angle (IWA) larger than the diffraction scale. Furthermore, our coronagraph architecture is potentially capable of measuring higher-fidelity spectrographs of exoplanets using spatial-spectral mode demultiplexing., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

We consider translational integer tilings by finite sets $A\subset\mathbb{Z}$. We introduce a new method based on \emph{splitting}, together with a new combinatorial interpretation of some of the main tools from our earlier work. We also use splitting to prove the Coven-Meyerowitz conjecture for a new class of tilings $A\oplus B=\mathbb{Z}_M$. This includes tilings of period $M=p_1^{n_1}p_2^{n_2}p_3^{n_3}$ with $p_1>p_2^{n_2-1}p_3^{n_3-1}$, and tilings of period $M=p_1^{n_1}p_2^2p_3^2p_4^2$ with $p_1>p_2p_3p_4$, where $p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4$ are distinct primes and $n_1,n_2,n_3\in\mathbb{N}$. This is the second one of the two papers replacing version 1 of arXiv:2207.11809 (the first one is available as arXiv:2207.11809 v2). The main results of this paper (Theorem 1.2, Corollaries 1.4 and 1.5) and the intermediate results in Section 4.2 are all new and did not appear previously in arXiv:2207.11809 v1 or anywhere else. The material in Sections 3, 4.1, and 5 (splitting and the splitting formulation of the slab reduction) did appear in arXiv:2207.11809 v1 and has been removed from arXiv:2207.11809 v2. The results in Section 7 were included in arXiv:2207.11809 v1 and have been removed from arXiv:2207.11809 v2; the proofs are shorter and (we hope) more readable., Comment: 22 pages. Some of the results here appeared previously in arXiv:2207.11809 v1 and were removed from arXiv:2207.11809 v2. See abstract for details

This work presents a novel approach to monocular 6D pose estimation of surgical instruments in open surgery, addressing challenges such as object articulations, symmetries, occlusions, and lack of annotated real-world data. The method leverages synthetic data generation and domain adaptation techniques to overcome these obstacles. The proposed approach consists of three main components: (1) synthetic data generation using 3D modeling of surgical tools with articulation rigging and physically-based rendering; (2) a tailored pose estimation framework combining object detection with pose estimation and a hybrid geometric fusion strategy; and (3) a training strategy that utilizes both synthetic and real unannotated data, employing domain adaptation on real video data using automatically generated pseudo-labels. Evaluations conducted on videos of open surgery demonstrate the good performance and real-world applicability of the proposed method, highlighting its potential for integration into medical augmented reality and robotic systems. The approach eliminates the need for extensive manual annotation of real surgical data.

We propose a natural, parameter-free, discrete-variable formulation of Feynman path integrals. We show that for discrete-variable quantum systems, Feynman path integrals take the form of walks on the graph whose weighted adjacency matrix is the Hamiltonian. By working out expressions for the partition function and transition amplitudes of discretized versions of continuous-variable quantum systems, and then taking the continuum limit, we explicitly recover Feynman's continuous-variable path integrals. We also discuss the implications of our result., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

The dynamic nature of life's ability to thrive in diverse and changing planetary environments suggests that habitability and survival depend on the evolutionary path and life adaptation to environmental conditions. Here we explore such "adaptive habitability" through astro-ecological models. We study the interplay between temperature adaptation and environmental fluctuations, particularly those induced by solar activity and orbital dynamics. We present a simplified ecological-evolutionary model to investigate the limits of life's adaptability on a planetary scale. By incorporating complexities such as multiple niches, migration, species interactions, and realistic temperature variations, we demonstrate the potential for adaptive habitability in the face of both gradual and abrupt environmental changes. Through simulations encompassing monotonic, periodic, and secular dynamical evolution-induced temperature profiles, we identify critical thresholds for survival and extinction, highlighting the importance of phenotypic variance and dispersal rates in adapting to varying environmental conditions. These findings underscore the significance of considering temporal variations in assessing exoplanet habitability and expanding the search space for potentially habitable worlds., Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 10 figures,16 pages

Exact unlearning was first introduced as a privacy mechanism that allowed a user to retract their data from machine learning models on request. Shortly after, inexact schemes were proposed to mitigate the impractical costs associated with exact unlearning. More recently unlearning is often discussed as an approach for removal of impermissible knowledge i.e. knowledge that the model should not possess such as unlicensed copyrighted, inaccurate, or malicious information. The promise is that if the model does not have a certain malicious capability, then it cannot be used for the associated malicious purpose. In this paper we revisit the paradigm in which unlearning is used for in Large Language Models (LLMs) and highlight an underlying inconsistency arising from in-context learning. Unlearning can be an effective control mechanism for the training phase, yet it does not prevent the model from performing an impermissible act during inference. We introduce a concept of ununlearning, where unlearned knowledge gets reintroduced in-context, effectively rendering the model capable of behaving as if it knows the forgotten knowledge. As a result, we argue that content filtering for impermissible knowledge will be required and even exact unlearning schemes are not enough for effective content regulation. We discuss feasibility of ununlearning for modern LLMs and examine broader implications.

A primary cost driver for training large models is wall-clock training time. We show that popular time estimates based on FLOPs are poor estimates, and construct a more accurate proxy based on memory copies. This allows us to accurately estimate the training speed of a transformer model from its hyperparameters. Combined with a scaling law curve like Chinchilla, this allows us to accurately predict the final loss of a model from a simple equation. We show that this expression is accurate across a wide range of model hyperparameter values, enabling us to analytically make architectural decisions and train models more efficiently. Crucially, this analysis predicts that in contrast to existing literature, models should be wider rather than deeper, as the benefits of speed outweigh the benefits of depth.

Supporting increasingly higher rates in wireless networks requires highly accurate clock synchronization across the nodes. Motivated by this need, in this work we consider distributed clock synchronization for half-duplex (HD) TDMA wireless networks. We focus on pulse-coupling (PC)-based synchronization as it is practically advantageous for high-speed networks using low-power nodes. Previous works on PC-based synchronization for TDMA networks assumed full-duplex communications, and focused on correcting the clock phase at each node, without synchronizing clocks' frequencies. However, as in the HD regime corrections are temporally sparse, uncompensated clock frequency differences between the nodes result in large phase drifts between updates. Moreover, as the clocks determine the processing rates at the nodes, leaving the clocks' frequencies unsynchronized results in processing rates mismatch between the nodes, leading to a throughput reduction. Our goal in this work is to synchronize both clock frequency and clock phase across the clocks in HD TDMA networks, via distributed processing. The key challenges are the coupling between frequency correction and phase correction, and the lack of a computationally efficient analytical framework for determining the optimal correction signal at the nodes. We address these challenges via a DNN-aided nested loop structure in which the DNN are used for generating the weights applied to the loop input for computing the correction signal. This loop is operated in a sequential manner which decouples frequency and phase compensations, thereby facilitating synchronization of both parameters. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed scheme significantly improves synchronization accuracy compared to the conventional approaches., Comment: Accepted to ICC 2024

Kernel ridge regression (KRR) and Gaussian processes (GPs) are fundamental tools in statistics and machine learning with recent applications to highly over-parameterized deep neural networks. The ability of these tools to learn a target function is directly related to the eigenvalues of their kernel sampled on the input data. Targets having support on higher eigenvalues are more learnable. While kernels are often highly symmetric objects, the data is often not. Thus kernel symmetry seems to have little to no bearing on the above eigenvalues or learnability, making spectral analysis on real-world data challenging. Here, we show that contrary to this common lure, one may use eigenvalues and eigenfunctions associated with highly idealized data-measures to bound learnability on realistic data. As a demonstration, we give a theoretical lower bound on the sample complexity of copying heads for kernels associated with generic transformers acting on natural language.

Cardiolipin (CL) is a unique, four-chain phospholipid synthesized in the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM). The acyl chain composition of CL is regulated through a remodeling pathway, whose loss causes mitochondrial dysfunction in Barth syndrome (BTHS). Yeast has been used extensively as a model system to characterize CL metabolism, but mutants lacking its two remodeling enzymes, Cld1p and Taz1p, exhibit mild structural and respiratory phenotypes compared to mammalian cells. Here, we show an essential role for CL remodeling in the structure and function of the IMM in yeast grown under reduced oxygenation. Microaerobic fermentation, which mimics natural yeast environments, caused the accumulation of saturated fatty acids and, under these conditions, remodeling mutants showed a loss of IMM ultrastructure. We extended this observation to HEK293 cells, where phospholipase A2 inhibition by Bromoenol lactone resulted in respiratory dysfunction and cristae loss upon mild treatment with exogenous saturated fatty acids. In microaerobic yeast, remodeling mutants accumulated unremodeled, saturated CL, but also displayed reduced total CL levels, highlighting the interplay between saturation and CL biosynthesis and/or breakdown. We identified the mitochondrial phospholipase A1 Ddl1p as a regulator of CL levels, and those of its precursors phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidic acid, under these conditions. Loss of Ddl1p partially rescued IMM structure in cells unable to initiate CL remodeling and had differing lipidomic effects depending on oxygenation. These results introduce a revised yeast model for investigating CL remodeling and suggest that its structural functions are dependent on the overall lipid environment in the mitochondrion.

Introduction: Emergency medicine (EM) was recognized as a specialty in Israel in 1999. Fifty-nine of the 234 (25%) attending physicians working in emergency departments (ED) nationwide in 2002 were board-certified emergency physicians (EP). A 2012 study revealed that 123/270 (45%) of ED attendings were EPs, and that there were 71 EM residents. The EPs primarily worked midweek morning shifts, leaving the EDs mostly staffed by other specialties. Our objective in this study was to re-evaluate the EP workforce in Israeli EDs and their employment status and satisfaction 10 years after the last study, which was conducted in 2012.Methods: We performed a three-part, prospective cross-sectional study: 1) a survey, sent to all EDs in Israel, to assess the numbers, level of training, and specialties of physicians working in EDs; 2) an anonymous questionnaire, sent to EPs in Israel, to assess their demographics, training, employment, and work satisfaction; and 3) interviews of a convenience sample of EPs analyzed by a thematic approach. Results: There were 266 board-certified EPs, 141 (53%) of whom were employed in EDs full-time or part-time. Sixty-two non-EPs also worked in EDs. The EPs were present in the EDs primarily during weekday morning shifts. There were 273 EM residents nationwide. A total of 101 questionnaires were completed and revealed that EPs working part-time in the ED worked fewer hours, received higher salaries, and had more years of experience compared to EPs working full time or not working in the ED. Satisfaction correlated only with working part time. Meaningful work, diversity, and rewarding relationships with patients and colleagues were major positive reasons for working in the ED. Feeling undervalued, carrying a heavy caseload, and having complicated relationships with other hospital departments were reasons against working in the ED.Conclusion: Our study findings showed an increase in the number of trained and in-training EPs, and a decrease in the percentage of board-certified EPs who persevere in the EDs. Emergency medicine in Israel is at a crossroads: more physicians are choosing EM than a decade ago, but retention of board-certified EPs is a major concern, as it is worldwide. We recommend taking measures to maintain trained and experienced EPs working in the ED by allowing part-time ED positions, introducing dedicated academic time, and diversifying EP roles, functioning, and work routine.

Shape-programmed sheets morph from one surface into another upon activation by stimuli such as illumination, and have attracted much interest for their potential engineering applications, especially in soft robotics. Complex shape changes can be achieved by patterning a simple local active deformation (e.g. isotropic swelling), to generate differential growth. Usually the material itself is designed $\unicode{x2014}$ for example by patterning a molecular director $\unicode{x2014}$ such that a particular shape change occurs upon exposure to a spatially uniform stimulus. A limitation of this paradigm is that typically only one target geometry can be attained as the stimulus is adjusted. Here we show that this limitation can be overcome by patterning the stimulus itself, thereby exercising spatiotemporal control over local deformation magnitudes. Thus a single physical sample can be induced to traverse a continuous family of target geometries, opening the door to precise shape adjustments, new functionalities, and designable non-reciprocal loops in shape space. We illustrate these possibilities with examples including active parabolic reflectors, chiral flow guides, and bending channels. Finding the necessary patterns of activation involves solving families of metric inverse problems; we solve these by reduction to ODEs in an axisymmetric setting, then present a novel numerical scheme to solve them in generality.

Background: Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) contributed significantly to suicide assessment, however, our theoretical understanding of this complex behavior is still limited. Objective: This study aimed to harness AI methodologies to uncover hidden risk factors that trigger or aggravate suicide behaviors. Method: The primary dataset included 228,052 Facebook postings by 1,006 users who completed the gold-standard Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale. This dataset was analyzed using a bottom-up research pipeline without a-priory hypotheses and its findings were validated using a top-down analysis of a new dataset. This secondary dataset included responses by 1,062 participants to the same suicide scale as well as to well-validated scales measuring depression and boredom. Results: An almost fully automated, AI-guided research pipeline resulted in four Facebook topics that predicted the risk of suicide, of which the strongest predictor was boredom. A comprehensive literature review using APA PsycInfo revealed that boredom is rarely perceived as a unique risk factor of suicide. A complementing top-down path analysis of the secondary dataset uncovered an indirect relationship between boredom and suicide, which was mediated by depression. An equivalent mediated relationship was observed in the primary Facebook dataset as well. However, here, a direct relationship between boredom and suicide risk was also observed. Conclusions: Integrating AI methods allowed the discovery of an under-researched risk factor of suicide. The study signals boredom as a maladaptive 'ingredient' that might trigger suicide behaviors, regardless of depression. Further studies are recommended to direct clinicians' attention to this burdening, and sometimes existential experience.

Gauge theories form the basis of our understanding of modern physics - ranging from the description of quarks and gluons to effective models in condensed matter physics. In the non-perturbative regime, gauge theories are conventionally treated discretely as lattice gauge theories. The resulting systems are evaluated with path-integral based Monte Carlo methods. These methods, however, can suffer from the sign problem and do not allow for a direct evaluation of real-time dynamics. In this work, we present a unified and comprehensive framework for gauged Gaussian Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS), a variational ansatz based on tensor networks. We review the construction of Hamiltonian lattice gauge theories, explain their similarities with PEPS, and detail the construction of the state. The estimation of ground states is based on a variational Monte Carlo procedure with the PEPS as an ansatz state. This sign-problem-free ansatz can be efficiently evaluated in any dimension with arbitrary gauge groups, and can include dynamical fermionic matter, suggesting new options for the simulation of non-perturbative regimes of gauge theories, including QCD., Comment: V2: update to match published version

We present Jamba, a new base large language model based on a novel hybrid Transformer-Mamba mixture-of-experts (MoE) architecture. Specifically, Jamba interleaves blocks of Transformer and Mamba layers, enjoying the benefits of both model families. MoE is added in some of these layers to increase model capacity while keeping active parameter usage manageable. This flexible architecture allows resource- and objective-specific configurations. In the particular configuration we have implemented, we end up with a powerful model that fits in a single 80GB GPU. Built at large scale, Jamba provides high throughput and small memory footprint compared to vanilla Transformers, and at the same time state-of-the-art performance on standard language model benchmarks and long-context evaluations. Remarkably, the model presents strong results for up to 256K tokens context length. We study various architectural decisions, such as how to combine Transformer and Mamba layers, and how to mix experts, and show that some of them are crucial in large scale modeling. We also describe several interesting properties of these architectures which the training and evaluation of Jamba have revealed, and plan to release checkpoints from various ablation runs, to encourage further exploration of this novel architecture. We make the weights of our implementation of Jamba publicly available under a permissive license., Comment: Webpage: https://www.ai21.com/jamba

We introduce the first model-stealing attack that extracts precise, nontrivial information from black-box production language models like OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google's PaLM-2. Specifically, our attack recovers the embedding projection layer (up to symmetries) of a transformer model, given typical API access. For under \$20 USD, our attack extracts the entire projection matrix of OpenAI's Ada and Babbage language models. We thereby confirm, for the first time, that these black-box models have a hidden dimension of 1024 and 2048, respectively. We also recover the exact hidden dimension size of the gpt-3.5-turbo model, and estimate it would cost under $2,000 in queries to recover the entire projection matrix. We conclude with potential defenses and mitigations, and discuss the implications of possible future work that could extend our attack.

We re-examine the CHSH experiment, which we abstract here as a multi-round game played between two parties with each party reporting a single binary outcome at each round. We explore in particular the role that symmetries, and the spontaneous breaking thereof, play in determining the maximally achievable correlations between the two parties. We show, with the help of an explicit statistical model, that the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry allows for stronger correlations than those that can be achieved in its absence. We then demonstrate that spontaneous symmetry breaking may lead to a violation of the renowned CHSH inequality. We believe that the ideas presented in this paper open the door to novel research avenues that have the potential to deepen our understanding of the quantum formalism and the physical reality that it describes., Comment: We welcome open scientific discussion on the results of this paper

The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. We also report argon purity and detector uniformity measurements, and provide comparisons to detector simulations., Comment: 47 pages, 41 figures
