We investigated the energy dependence of the number of triggered pixels, or cluster size, when charged particles are detected using the TimePix3 detector with a silicon sensor. We measured protons in the range of 1.5~3.3 MeV from a Pelletron accelerator at RIKEN using a TimePix3 detector with a 500 um-thick silicon sensor. We determined from the experimental results a cluster size comprised between 30 and 80 pixels. To understand the physical process that produces large cluster images and its energy dependence, we simulated the charge carrier drifts in the sensor, assuming the incidence of a proton in the detector. The cluster sizes estimated in the simulation were smaller than those observed in the experiment, and remained constant across the entire energy range, when thermal diffusion and charge carriers self-repulsion were considered as the factors of the cluster image formation. In addition, we discovered that the size of the cluster image and its energy dependence observed in the experiment could be well explained when considering that the TimePix3 detector is sensitive to the transient induced charges, allowing even pixels that do not collect the charge carriers to trigger. We conclude that the cluster size measurement is a promising method for evaluating the energy deposited by a charged particle in the TimePix3 detector.

[Abbreviated] Context. Given their high luminosities (L>~10^4Lsun), red supergiants (RSGs) are good tracers of the chemical abundances of the young stellar population in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. However, previous abundance analyses tailored to RSGs suffer some systematic uncertainties originating in, most notably, the synthesized molecular spectral lines for RSGs. Aims. We establish a new abundance analysis procedure for RSGs that circumvents difficulties faced in previous works, and test the procedure with ten nearby RSGs observed with the near-infrared high-resolution spectrograph WINERED (0.97--1.32 micron, R=28,000). Results. We determined the [X/Fe] of ten elements (Na I, Mg I, Al I, Si I, K I, Ca I, Ti I, Cr I, Ni I, and Y II). We estimated the relative precision in the derived abundances to be 0.04--0.12 dex for elements with more than two lines analyzed (e.g., Fe I and Mg I) and up to 0.18 dex for the other elements (e.g., Y II). We compared the resultant abundances of RSGs with the well-established abundances of another type of young star, namely the Cepheids, in order to evaluate the potential systematic bias in our abundance measurements, assuming that the young stars (i.e., both RSGs and Cepheids) in the solar neighborhood have common chemical abundances. We find that the determined RSG abundances are highly consistent with those of Cepheids within <~0.1 dex for some elements (notably [Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe]), which means the bias in the abundance determination for these elements is likely to be small. In contrast, the consistency is worse for some other elements (e.g., [Si/Fe] and [Y/Fe]). Nevertheless, the dispersion of the chemical abundances among our target RSGs is comparable with the individual statistical errors on the abundances. Metric learning projects samples into an embedded space, where similarities and dissimilarities are quantified based on their learned representations. However, existing methods often rely on label-guided representation learning, where representations of different modalities, such as audio and visual data, are aligned based on annotated labels. This approach tends to underutilize latent complex features and potential relationships inherent in the distributions of audio and visual data that are not directly tied to the labels, resulting in suboptimal performance in audio-visual embedding learning. To address this issue, we propose a novel architecture that integrates cross-modal triplet loss with progressive self-distillation. Our method enhances representation learning by leveraging inherent distributions and dynamically refining soft audio-visual alignments -- probabilistic alignments between audio and visual data that capture the inherent relationships beyond explicit labels. Specifically, the model distills audio-visual distribution-based knowledge from annotated labels in a subset of each batch. Prethermal discrete time crystals (DTCs) are a class of nonequilibrium phases of matter that exhibit robust subharmonic responses to periodic driving without requiring disorder. Prior realizations of prethermal DTCs have relied on the presence of either spontaneous or induced finite polarization. Here, we introduce a new class of prethermal DTCs termed unpolarized prethermal discrete time crystals (UPDTCs) that do not require finite polarization. By studying a spin model of periodically driven trapped ions, we show that robust period-doubled dynamics can persist in the autocorrelation function of the staggered magnetization for paramagnetic initial states, even when the staggered magnetization itself vanishes. The key insight is that quantum fluctuations alone are sufficient to reveal coherent DTC-like dynamics. We demonstrate that UPDTCs are exponentially long-lived in the high-frequency driving regime, consistent with Floquet prethermalization. Our results expand the known phenomenology of prethermal time crystals and underscore the role of quantum effects in stabilizing novel nonequilibrium phases. The 2017 observing campaign of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) delivered the first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images at the observing frequency of 230 GHz, leading to a number of unique studies on black holes and relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN). In total, eighteen sources were observed: the main science targets, Sgr A* and M87 along with various calibrators. We investigated the morphology of the sixteen AGN in the EHT 2017 data set, focusing on the properties of the VLBI cores: size, flux density, and brightness temperature. We studied their dependence on the observing frequency in order to compare it with the Blandford-K\"onigl (BK) jet model. We modeled the source structure of seven AGN in the EHT 2017 data set using linearly polarized circular Gaussian components and collected results for the other nine AGN from dedicated EHT publications, complemented by lower frequency data in the 2-86 GHz range. Then, we studied the dependences of the VLBI core flux density, size, and brightness temperature on the frequency measured in the AGN host frame. We compared the observations with the BK jet model and estimated the magnetic field strength dependence on the distance from the central black hole. Our results indicate a deviation from the standard BK model, particularly in the decrease of the brightness temperature with the observing frequency. Either bulk acceleration of the jet material, energy transfer from the magnetic field to the particles, or both are required to explain the observations.

We study a $1$D supersymmetric (SUSY) hard-core fermion model first proposed by Fendley, Schoutens, and de Boer [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 120402 (2003)]. We focus on the full Hilbert space instead of a restricted subspace. Exact diagonalization shows the degeneracy of zero-energy states scales exponentially with size of the system, with a recurrence relation between different system sizes. We solve the degeneracy problem by showing the ground states can be systematically constructed by inserting immobile walls of fermions into the chain. Mapping the counting problem to a combinatorial one and obtaining the exact generating function, we prove the recurrence relation on both open and periodic chains. This article deals with the behavior in time of the solution to the Cauchy problem for a fractional wave equation with a weighted $L^1$ initial data. Initially, we establish the global existence of the solution using Fourier methods and provide upper bounds for the $L^2$ norm and the $H^s$ norm of the solution for any dimension $n\in \mathbb{N}$ and $s\in (0,1)$. However, when $n=1$ and $s \in [\frac{1}{2},1)$, %we have to assume that the initial velocity satisfies we have to impose a stronger assumption $\int_{\mathbb{R}}u_1(x)dx=0$. To remove this stronger assumption, we further use the Fourier splitting method, which yields the optimal blow-up rate for the $L^2$ norm of the solutions. Solid-state quantum emitters are an important platform for quantum information processing. The fabrication of the emitters with stable photon frequency and narrow linewidth is a fundamental issue, and it is essential to understand optical conditions under which the emitter keeps a bright charge state or transitions to a dark state. For these purposes, in this study, we investigate the spectral stability and charge state transition of tin-vacancy (SnV) centers in diamond. The photoluminescence excitation spectra of multiple SnV centers are basically stable over time with nearly transform-limited linewidths under resonant excitation, while simultaneous irradiation of resonant and non-resonant lasers makes spectra from the SnV centers unstable. We find that the instability occurs due to the charge state transition to a dark state. The charge state transition rates are quantitatively investigated depending on the laser powers. Lastly, with first-principle calculations, we model the charge state transition of the SnV center under the laser irradiation.

We examine the energy-critical nonlinear heat equation in critical spaces for any dimension greater or equal than three. The aim of this paper is two-fold. First, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition on initial data at or below the ground state that dichotomizes the behavior of solutions. Specifically, this criterion determines whether the solution will either exist globally with energy decaying to zero over time or blow up in finite time. Secondly, we derive the decay rate for solutions that exist globally. We reformulate the gain correction problem of the radio interferometry as an optimization problem with regularization, which is solved efficiently with an iterative algorithm. Combining this new method with our previously proposed imaging method, PRIISM, the whole process of the self-calibration of radio interferometry is redefined as a single optimization problem with regularization. As a result, the gains are corrected, and an image is estimated. We study the critical behavior of the $O(n)$ model under steady shear flow using a dynamical renormalization group (RG) method. Incorporating the strong anisotropy in scaling ansatz, which has been neglected in earlier RG analyses, we identify a new stable Gaussian fixed point. This fixed point reproduces the anisotropic scaling of static and dynamical critical exponents for both non-conserved (Model A) and conserved (Model B) order parameters. Notably, the upper critical dimensions are $d_{\text{up}} = 2$ for the non-conserved order parameter (Model A) and $d_{\text{up}} = 0$ for the conserved order parameter (Model B), implying that the mean-field critical exponents are observed even in both $d=2$ and $3$ dimensions. Furthermore, the scaling exponent of the order parameter is negative for all dimensions $d \geq 2$, indicating that shear flow stabilizes the long-range order associated with continuous symmetry breaking even in $d = 2$. In other words, the lower critical dimensions are $d_{\rm low} < 2$ for both types of order parameters. Studying the early stages of transient events provides crucial information about the fundamental physical processes in cataclysmic variables (CVs). However, determining an appropriate observation mode immediately after the discovery of a new transient presents challenges due to significant uncertainties regarding its nature. We developed a framework designed for autonomous decision making in prompt follow-up observations of CVs using the Kanata 1.5-m telescope. The system, named Smart Kanata, first estimates the class probabilities of variable star types using a generative model. It then selects the optimal observation mode from three possible options based on the mutual information calculated from the class probabilities. We have operated the system for ~300 days and obtained 21 samples, among which automated observations were successfully performed for a nova and a microlensing event. In the time-series spectra of the nova V4370 Oph, we detected a rapid deepening of the absorption component of the H_alpha line. The realization of BCS-BEC crossover in superconductors, which smoothly connects Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory with Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) in fermion systems, is an intriguing recent topic in strongly correlated electron systems. The organic superconductor $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_4$Hg$_{2.89}$Br$_8$ ($\kappa$-HgBr) under pressure is one of the leading candidates, owing to its unique metallic spin-liquid nature and tunable electron correlation. We theoretically investigate the extended Hubbard model for $\kappa$-HgBr and discuss the possibility of the BCS-BEC crossover by systematically calculating superconducting correlation function, coherence length, superfluid weight, and chemical potential. Our findings show that the BCS-BEC crossover can be observed when competing phases, such as Mott insulators and charge and/or spin orders, are suppressed by appropriate hole doping. $\kappa$-HgBr is just the case because both the Mott insulating phase and magnetic orders are absent due to its nonstoichiometric Hg composition and geometrical frustration. The history of gas assembly in early galaxies is reflected in their complex kinematics. While a considerable fraction of galaxies at z~5 are consistent with rotating disks, current studies indicate that the dominant galaxy assembly mechanism corresponds to mergers. Despite the important progress, the dynamical classification of galaxies at these epochs is still limited by observations' resolution. We present a detailed morphological and kinematic analysis of the far-infrared bright main sequence galaxy HZ10 at z=5.65, making use of new high-resolution ($\lesssim0.3$") [CII] 158$\mu$m ALMA and rest-frame optical JWST/NIRSpec observations. These observations reveal a previously unresolved complex morphology and kinematics of the HZ10. We confirm that HZ10 is not a single galaxy but consists of at least three components in close projected separation along the east-to-west direction. We find a [CII] bright central component (C), separated by 1.5 and 4 kpc from the east (E) and west (W) components, respectively. Our [CII] observations resolve the HZ10-C component resulting in a velocity gradient, produced by either rotation or a close-in merger. We test the rotating disk possibility using DysmalPy kinematic modeling and propose three dynamical scenarios for the HZ10 system: (i) a double merger, in which the companion galaxy HZ10-W merges with the disturbed clumpy rotation disk formed by the HZ10-C and E components; (ii) a triple merger, where the companion galaxies, HZ10-W and HZ10-E, merge with the rotation disk HZ10-C; and (iii) a quadruple merger, in which the companion galaxies HZ10-W and HZ10-E merge with the close double merger HZ10-C. Comparing [CII] with JWST/NIRSpec data, we find that [CII] emission closely resembles the broad [OIII] 5007{\AA} emission. The observation of a resonance structure in the opening angle of the electron-positron pairs in the $^{7}$Li(p,\ee) $^{8}$Be reaction was claimed and interpreted as the production and subsequent decay of a hypothetical particle (X17). Similar excesses, consistent with this particle, were later observed in processes involving $^{4}$He and $^{12}$C nuclei with the same experimental technique. The MEG II apparatus at PSI, designed to search for the $\mu^+ \rightarrow \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ decay, can be exploited to investigate the existence of this particle and study its nature. Protons from a Cockroft-Walton accelerator, with an energy up to 1.1 MeV, were delivered on a dedicated Li-based target. The $\gamma$ and the e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ pair emerging from the $^8\mathrm{Be}^*$ transitions were studied with calorimeters and a spectrometer, featuring a broader angular acceptance than previous experiments. We present in this paper the analysis of a four-week data-taking in 2023 with a beam energy of 1080 keV, resulting in the excitation of two different resonances with Q-value \SI{17.6}{\mega\electronvolt} and \SI{18.1}{\mega\electronvolt}. No significant signal was found, and limits at \SI{90}{\percent} C.L. on the branching ratios (relative to the $\gamma$ emission) of the two resonances to X17 were set, $R_{17.6} < 1.8 \times 10^{-6} $ and $R_{18.1} < 1.2 \times 10^{-5} $., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, submitted to EPJC

We report the discovery of a unique quasar-dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) system at $z = 5.63$, consisting of the bright quasar J1133+1603 ($M_{\rm UV} = -27.42$) and its compact, dust-obscured companion, J1133c. ALMA observations reveal a prominent [C II] bridge connecting the quasar and DSFG, indicating ongoing interaction at a projected separation of 1.8 arcsec ($\sim$10 proper kpc). J1133c exhibits unusually bright and broad [C II] emission ($L_{\rm [CII]} > 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, FWHM $> 500$ km s$^{-1}$), with a [C II] luminosity five times that of the quasar, suggesting intense star formation or potential AGN activity. The inferred star formation rate from [C II] is approximately $10^3$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Photoelectron diffraction (PED) is a powerful spectroscopic technique that combines elemental resolution with a high sensitivity to the local atomic arrangement at crystal surfaces, thus providing unique fingerprints of selected atomic sites in matter. Stimulated by the rapid innovation in the development of various analysis methods for probing the atomic and electronic structures of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of two-dimensional materials, we present a theoretical assessment of the capacity of PED for extracting structural properties such as stacking, twist angles and interlayer distances. We provide a complete description of PED for the benchmark vdW heterostructure bilayer graphene (BLG), by calculating and analyzing the PED of BLG in Bernal and AA-stacking as well as twisted BLG for a wide range of the twist angle., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

YbCu4Au is a unique material exhibiting multiple quantum fluctuations simultaneously. In this study, we investigated the field-induced criticality in YbCu4Au, based on comprehensive micro and macro measurements, including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), neutron powder diffraction (NPD), nuclear magnetic resonance, magnetization, resistivity, specific heat, muon spin rotation relaxation (muSR), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Single crystals of YbCu4Au were grown, and their crystal structure was determined using XRD, and NPD measurements. Magnetic successive transitions were observed below 1 T by specific heat, resistivity, NPD, and muSR measurements. XAS measurements further indicate that the valence of Yb ions (+2.93) remained unchanged above 2 T. Moreover, the change in quadrupole frequency observed in the previous study is attributable to the electric quadrupole, as the expected value of the electric quadrupole was finite under magnetic fields [S. We propose an optical tactile sensor using self-healing materials. The proposed tactile sensor consists of a structure that includes a diode, a phototransistor, and an optical waveguide made from self-healing materials. This design offers the advantage of being less susceptible to electromagnetic noise compared to traditional tactile sensors based on electrical detection principles. The sensor estimates the applied force by detecting changes in the total internal reflection caused by deformation due to contact force. In this study, we first established a fabrication method for the optical waveguide-based tactile sensor using self-healing materials. Subsequently, we measured the sensor output when a static load was applied to the fabricated tactile sensor and evaluated its characteristics. This study investigates the influence of Herbig-Haro jets on initiating star formation in dense environments. When molecular clouds are nearing gravitational instability, the impact of a protostellar jet could provide the impetus needed to catalyse star formation. A high-energy-density experiment was carried out at the LULI2000 laser facility, where a supersonic jet generated by a nanosecond laser was used to compress a foam or plastic ball, mimicking the interaction of a Herbig-Haro jet with a molecular cloud. Simulations using the 3D radiation hydrodynamics code TROLL provided comprehensive data for analysing ball compression and calculating jet characteristics. After applying scaling laws, similarities between stellar and experimental jets were explored. Diagnostic simulations, including density gradient, emission and X-ray radiographies, showed strong agreement with experimental data. The results of the experiment, supported by simulations, demonstrated that the impact of a protostellar jet on a molecular cloud could reduce the Bonnor-Ebert mass by approximately 9%, thereby initiating collapse., Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

We present ALMA observations on the high-redshift galaxy GHZ2 and report a successful detection of the rest-frame 88um atomic transition from doubly-ionized Oxygen at z=12.3327+/-0.0005. Based on these observations, combined with additional constraints on the [OIII] 52um line luminosity and previous JWST data, we argue that GHZ2 is likely powered by compact and young star formation, and show that it follows well-established relationships found for giant HII regions and metal-poor star-forming dwarf galaxies that are known to host bright super star clusters. Additionally, these observations provide new constraints on the Oxygen electron density (100 < n_e[cm^-3] < 4,000) and dynamical mass (M_dyn=3-8x10^8M_sun). The existence of these massive starburst systems 13.3Gyr ago might explain the origin of today's globular clusters, a long-standing question in astronomy. With the recent advancements in laser technology, there has been increasing interest in nonlinear and nonperturbative phenomena such as nonreciprocal transport, the nonlinear Hall effect, and nonlinear optical responses. When analyzing the nonequilibrium steady state, the relaxation time approximation (RTA) in the quantum kinetic equation has been widely used. However, recent studies have highlighted problems with the use of RTA that require careful consideration. In a study published in Phys. Rev. B, $\textbf{109}$, L180302 (2024), we revealed that the RTA has a flaw in predicting finite linear conductivity even for insulators under weak electric fields, and improved the RTA based on the Redfield equation. In this paper, we further extend our approach to nonlinear responses. Recent advancements in laser technology have spurred growing interest in nonlinear and nonequilibrium phenomena. Here, we investigate the geometric aspects of quantum tunneling and the nonreciprocal response, particularly focusing on the shift vector, in noncentrosymmetric insulators under a strong DC electric field. In insulators under a strong electric field, electrons undergoing Bloch oscillations interfere with each other by passing through different paths via Landau-Zener tunneling. We found that the interference effect due to multi-tunneling causes the oscillating nonreciprocal response that is significantly amplified with increasing electric field intensity. We also clarified the role of the shift vector in the interference conditions through an analysis of the nonequilibrium steady state. Although 3D object editing has the potential to significantly influence various industries, recent research in 3D generation and editing has primarily focused on converting text and images into 3D models, often overlooking the need for fine-grained control over the editing of existing 3D objects. This paper introduces a framework that employs a pre-trained regressor, enabling continuous, precise, attribute-specific modifications to both the stylistic and geometric attributes of vehicle 3D models. Our method not only preserves the inherent identity of vehicle 3D objects, but also supports multi-attribute editing, allowing for extensive customization without compromising the model's structural integrity. Chiral and axial materials offer platforms for intriguing phenomena, such as cross-correlated responses and chirality-induced spin selectivity. However, quantifying the properties of such materials has generally been considered challenging. Here, we demonstrate that the spatial distribution of the electron chirality, represented by $\Psi^\dagger \gamma^5 \Psi$ with the four-component Dirac field $\Psi$, characterizes the chirality and axiality of materials. Furthermore, we reveal that spin-derived electric polarization can serve as an effective indicator of material polarity. We present quantitative evaluations of electron chirality distribution and spin-derived electric polarization based on first-principles calculations. Additionally, we propose that electron chirality can be directly observed via circular dichroism in photoemission spectroscopy, which measures the difference between right- and left-handed circularly polarized light. Electron chirality and spin-derived electric polarization provide a new framework for quantifying chirality, axiality, and polarity in asymmetric materials, paving the way for the exploration of novel functional materials., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

In this study, we develop a conditional diffusion model that proposes the optimal process parameters, such as processing temperature, and predicts the microstructure for the desired mechanical properties, such as the elastic constants of the matrix resin contained in carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTPs). In CFRTPs, not only the carbon fibers but also the matrix resin contribute to the macroscopic mechanical properties. Matrix resins contain a mixture of dendrites, which are crystalline phases, and amorphous phases even after crystal growth is complete, and it is important to consider the microstructures consisting of the crystalline structure and the remaining amorphous phase to achieve the desired mechanical properties. Typically, the temperature during forming affects the microstructures, which in turn affect the macroscopic mechanical properties. The training data for the conditional diffusion model in this study are the crystallization temperatures, microstructures and the elasticity matrix. The elasticity matrix is normalized and introduced into the model as a condition. The trained diffusion model can propose not only the processing temperature but also the microstructure when Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio are given. Mouse and human brains have different functions that depend on their neuronal networks. In this study, we analyzed nanometer-scale three-dimensional structures of brain tissues of the mouse medial prefrontal cortex and compared them with structures of the human anterior cingulate cortex. The obtained results indicated that mouse neuronal somata are smaller and neurites are thinner than those of human neurons. These structural features allow mouse neurons to be integrated in the limited space of the brain, though thin neurites should suppress distal connections according to cable theory. We implemented this mouse-mimetic constraint in convolutional layers of a generative adversarial network (GAN) and a denoising diffusion implicit model (DDIM), which were then subjected to image generation tasks using photo datasets of cat faces, cheese, human faces, and birds. The mouse-mimetic GAN outperformed a standard GAN in the image generation task using the cat faces and cheese photo datasets, but underperformed for human faces and birds. The mouse-mimetic DDIM gave similar results, suggesting that the nature of the datasets affected the results. Analyses of the four datasets indicated differences in their image entropy, which should influence the number of parameters required for image generation. The preferences of the mouse-mimetic AIs coincided with the impressions commonly associated with mice. Spin dynamics in the van der Waals antiferromagnet FeGa$_2$S$_4$ with triangular lattices are investigated using magnetometry, neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation measurements. The characteristic spin relaxation time is thoroughly clarified over thirteen orders of magnitude. Although the temperature dependence of DC and AC susceptibilities recalls a conventional spin-glass transition, nonlinear susceptibilities showing no divergences at the anomalous temperature, $T^{\ast}=16.87(7)$~K, deny that and instead hint at other mechanisms. Elastic neutron scattering together with previously measured muon results depict a slowly fluctuated ($\sim 10^{-5}$~sec) spin state above $T^{\ast}$. We use the Atacama Large sub/Millimetre Array (ALMA) to efficiently observe spectral lines across Bands 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 at high-resolution (0.5" - 0.1") for 16 bright southern Herschel sources at $1.5 < z < 4.2$. With only six and a half hours of observations, we reveal 66 spectral lines in 17 galaxies. These observations detect emission from CO (3-2) to CO(18-17), as well as atomic ([CI](1-0), (2-1), [OI] 145 $\mu$m and [NII] 205 $\mu$m) lines. Additional molecular lines are seen in emission (${\rm H_2O}$ and ${\rm H_2O^+}$) and absorption (OH$^+$ and CH$^+$). The morphologies based on dust continuum ranges from extended sources to strong lensed galaxies with magnifications between 2 and 30. CO line transitions indicate a diverse set of excitation conditions with a fraction of the sources ($\sim 35$%) showcasing dense, warm gas. The resolved gas to star-formation surface densities vary strongly per source, and suggest that the observed diversity of dusty star-forming galaxies could be a combination of lensed, compact dusty starbursts and extended, potentially-merging galaxies. The predicted gas depletion timescales are consistent with 100 Myr to 1 Gyr, but require efficient fueling from the extended gas reservoirs onto the more central starbursts, in line with the Doppler-shifted absorption lines that indicate inflowing gas for two out of six sources. This pilot paper explores a successful new method of observing spectral lines in large samples of galaxies, supports future studies of larger samples, and finds that the efficiency of this new observational method will be further improved with the planned ALMA Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 42 pages, including 20 figures + spectra. Robot Imitation Learning (IL) is a crucial technique in robot learning, where agents learn by mimicking human demonstrations. However, IL encounters scalability challenges stemming from both non-user-friendly demonstration collection methods and the extensive time required to amass a sufficient number of demonstrations for effective training. In response, we introduce the Augmented Reality for Collection and generAtion of DEmonstrations (ARCADE) framework, designed to scale up demonstration collection for robot manipulation tasks. Our framework combines two key capabilities: 1) it leverages AR to make demonstration collection as simple as users performing daily tasks using their hands, and 2) it enables the automatic generation of additional synthetic demonstrations from a single human-derived demonstration, significantly reducing user effort and time. We assess ARCADE's performance on a real Fetch robot across three robotics tasks: 3-Waypoints-Reach, Push, and Pick-And-Place. Using our framework, we were able to rapidly train a policy using vanilla Behavioral Cloning (BC), a classic IL algorithm, which excelled across these three tasks. We also deploy ARCADE on a real household task, Pouring-Water, achieving an 80% success rate.

3D-shape reconstruction in extreme environments, such as low illumination or scattering condition, has been an open problem and intensively researched. Active stereo is one of potential solution for such environments for its robustness and high accuracy. However, active stereo systems usually consist of specialized system configurations with complicated algorithms, which narrow their application. In this paper, we propose Neural Signed Distance Field for active stereo systems to enable implicit correspondence search and triangulation in generalized Structured Light. With our technique, textureless or equivalent surfaces by low light condition are successfully reconstructed even with a small number of captured images. Experiments were conducted to confirm that the proposed method could achieve state-of-the-art reconstruction quality under such severe condition. Determining the spectrum and wave functions of excited states of a system is crucial in quantum physics and chemistry. Low-depth quantum algorithms, such as the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) and its variants, can be used to determine the ground-state energy. However, current approaches to computing excited states require numerous controlled unitaries, making the application of the original Variational Quantum Deflation (VQD) algorithm to problems in chemistry or physics suboptimal. In this study, we introduce a charge-preserving VQD (CPVQD) algorithm, designed to incorporate symmetry and the corresponding conserved charge into the VQD framework. This results in dimension reduction, significantly enhancing the efficiency of excited-state computations. We present benchmark results with GPU-accelerated simulations using systems up to 24 qubits, showcasing applications in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and quantum chemistry. Product formula (PF), which approximates the time evolution under a many-body Hamiltonian by the product of local time evolution operators, is one of the central approaches for simulating quantum dynamics by quantum computers. It has been of great interest whether PFs have a bound of the error from the exact time evolution, which is expressed by commutators among local terms (called commutator scaling), since it brings the substantial suppression of the computational cost in the system size. Although recent studies have revealed the presence and the explicit formulas of the PF error bounds for time-independent systems, those for time-dependent Hamiltonians remain to be a difficult problem except for low-order PFs. In this paper, we derive an explicit error bound of generic PFs for smooth time-dependent Hamiltonians, which is expressed by commutators among local terms and their time derivatives. This error bound can also host the substantial suppression in the system size for generic local Hamiltonians with finite-, short-, and long-ranged interactions, thereby giving a much better estimate of gate counts. Our derivation employs Floquet theory; Embedding generic smooth time-dependent Hamiltonians into time-periodic ones, we map the time-dependent PF error to the time-independent one defined on an infinite-dimensional space. This approach allows to obtain the error bounds not only for the ordinary time-dependent PF but also for its various family. In particular, we also clarify the explicit error bound of a time-dependent multi-product formula, with which we can achieve much smaller error by a linear combination of time-dependent PFs. The evolution and instability of Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces (BFSs) in the spherical $j=3/2$ model under the Zeeman field have been theoretically studied. The Zeeman field induces a pronounced expansion of the BFSs, especially for those with a predominant $j_z = \pm 3/2$ component. This expansion can be detected through spectroscopic techniques such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Furthermore, calculations of bogolon correlation functions suggest that if an additional phase transition occurs within the superconducting phase, it is likely to result in a chiral $p$-wave pairing state of bogolons, rather than a density-wave-type transition. This chiral $p$-wave state, which coexists with the chiral $d$-wave superconducting state, is characterized by spontaneous inversion symmetry breaking and the disappearance of the torus-shaped BFS structure., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The spectral form factor (SFF) is a powerful diagnostic of random matrix behavior in quantum many-body systems. We introduce a family of random circuit ensembles whose SFFs can be computed \textit{exactly}. These ensembles describe the evolution of non-interacting fermions in the presence of correlated on-site potentials drawn from the eigenvalue distribution of a circular ensemble. For disorder parameters drawn from the circular unitary ensemble (CUE), we derive an exact closed form for the SFF, valid for any choice of system size $L$ and integer time $t$. When the disorder is drawn from the circular orthogonal or symplectic ensembles (COE and CSE, respectively), we carry out the disorder averages analytically and reduce the computation of the SFF at integer times to a combinatorial problem amenable to transfer matrix methods. In each of these cases the SFF grows exponentially in time, which we argue is a signature of random matrix universality at the single-particle level. The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. We consider systems of fermions evolved by non-interacting unitary circuits with correlated on-site potentials. When these potentials are drawn from the eigenvalue distribution of a circular random matrix ensemble, the single-particle sector exhibits chaotic dynamics. We study the corresponding many-body spectral statistics and show that the spectral form factor (SFF) can be computed \textit{exactly}. Due to the absence of interactions the SFF grows exponentially in time, a result which we demonstrate through simple arguments, scaling collapses, and closed-form evaluation of the SFF. We study the role of interactions by numerically analyzing a kicked Ising model and find that the SFF crosses over to a linear growth regime consistent with many-body random matrix universality. Planar-symmetric hands, such as parallel grippers, are widely adopted in both research and industrial fields. Their symmetry, however, introduces ambiguity and discontinuity in the SO(3) representation, which hinders both the training and inference of neural-network-based grasp detectors. We propose a novel SO(3) representation that can parametrize a pair of planar-symmetric poses with a single parameter set by leveraging the 2D Bingham distribution. We also detail a grasp detector based on our representation, which provides a more consistent rotation output. Tidal effects on compact objects provide profound theoretical insights into the structure of the field equations, and are wonderful probes of the equation of state of matter, the nature of black holes and of the underlying theory of gravity. The natural framework for understanding tides is a perturbative scheme. Here, we point out ambiguities in determining tidal response functions within such a framework, which may lead to bias in constraining physical parameters with gravitational-wave observations if the computed quantities are not properly linked to observables. We propose a Canonical Tidal Response Function (CTRF) definition to compare values of tides in theories beyond vacuum General Relativity in a unified manner. As an example, we provide black hole tidal response functions, including both conservative and dissipative pieces, in various theories of gravity. The electron antinuetrino flux limits are presented for the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) of all time, GRB221009A, over a range of 1.8-200 MeV using the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti Neutrino Detector (KamLAND). Using a variety of time windows to search for electron antineutrinos coincident with the GRB, we set an upper limit on the flux under the assumption of various neutrino source spectra. No excess was observed in any time windows ranging from seconds to days around the event trigger time. To investigate the role of the excitons for the origin of the pressure-induced phase transition (BGT) from the black-colored insulator (BI) to the golden-yellow-colored metal (GM) of samarium monosulfide (SmS), optical reflectivity, Sm $3d$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) with the creation of excitons by photoexcitation (PE) are reported. In the pump-probe reflectivity measurement, following a huge reflectivity change of about 22 %, three different relaxation times with a vibration component were observed. The fast component with the relaxation time ($\tau$) of less than 1 ps is due to the excitation and relaxation of electrons into the conduction band, and the slowest one with $\tau > {\rm several} 100$ ps originates from the appearance of the photo-induced (PI) state. The components with $\tau \sim 10$ ps and vibration originate from the appearance of the PI state and the interference between the reflection lights at the sample surface and the boundary between the BI and PI states, suggesting that the electronic structure of the PI phase is different from that of the BI state. XAS spectra indicate that the Sm mean valence is shifted from the Sm$^{2+}$ dominant to the intermediate between Sm$^{2+}$ and Sm$^{3+}$ by PE but did not change to that of the GM phase across BGT, consistent with the reflectivity data. The XRD result after PE shows that the PI state has much less lattice contraction than the GM phase. These results suggest that the BGT cannot be achieved solely by creating excitons after PE but requires other effects, such as a lattice contraction., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We propose a quantum hash function based on Gaussian boson sampling on a photonic quantum computer, aiming to provide quantum-resistant security. Extensive simulations demonstrate that this hash function exhibits strong properties of preimage, second preimage, and collision resistance, which are essential for cryptographic applications. Notably, the estimated number of attempts required for a successful collision attack increases exponentially with the mode counts of the photonic quantum computer, suggesting robust resistance against birthday attacks. We also analyze the sampling cost for physical implementation and discuss potential applications to blockchain technologies, where the inherent quantum nature of the hash computation could provide quantum-resistant security. The high dimensionality of the quantum state space involved in the hashing process poses significant challenges for quantum attacks, indicating a path towards quantum security. A search for proton decay into $e^+/\mu^+$ and a $\eta$ meson has been performed using data from a 0.373 Mton$\cdot$year exposure (6050.3 live days) of Super-Kamiokande. Compared to previous searches this work introduces an improved model of the intranuclear $\eta$ interaction cross section, resulting in a factor of two reduction in uncertainties from this source and $\sim$10\% increase in signal efficiency. No significant data excess was found above the expected number of atmospheric neutrino background events resulting in no indication of proton decay into either mode. Lower limits on the proton partial lifetime of $1.4\times\mathrm{10^{34}~years}$ for $p\rightarrow e^+\eta$ and $7.3\times\mathrm{10^{33}~years}$ for $p\rightarrow \mu^+\eta$ at the 90$\%$ C.L. were set. These limits are around 1.5 times longer than our previous study and are the most stringent to date.

We present near-infrared high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of Europa using the Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (IRCS) onboard the Subaru Telescope, seeking direct evidence of water plumes on Europa and exploring spatial variations in plume activity. Using high spectral/spatial resolution and sensitivity of Subaru/IRCS, our observations have enabled a spatially resolved search for water plumes on Europa. Within our detection limits and time of observation, we found no evidence for the presence of water emission. For a rotation temperature of 50 K, we derived an upper limit on the H$_{2}$O abundance of 9.46$\times$10$^{19}$ - 5.92$\times$10$^{20}$ m$^{-2}$ in each divided slit area and 4.61$\times$10$^{19}$ m$^{-2}$ in the entire area covered by the slit. This upper limit lies below the inferred water abundance from previous UV observations by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), while being less sensitive by a factor of three compared to the Keck telescope and by one order of magnitude or more than the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations. Our results align with previous studies and demonstrate that using Subaru/IRCS is an effective strategy for searching for water plumes on Europa with high spatial resolution. Continued observations across different surface areas and orbital phases are essential to fully characterize Europa's plume activity and complement upcoming space missions., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures.
