Abstract Multi-species tests in bioassays offer a holistic view of the ecosystem’s response to toxicity, as different species display varying sensitivities to pollutants. This research aimed to assess the ability of toxicity tests’ to distinguish contamination levels, examine site-specific effects, and investigate seasonal variability. Using a multispecies approach (Nannochloropsis oceanica, Artemia franciscana, and Arbacia nigra), bioassays evaluated marine water quality from Callao Bay in Peru across four sampling areas (Naval School: PA1, Peruvian Marine Institute: PA2, Callao Pier: PA3, and San Lorenzo Island: PA4). These species, with varying sizes and morphologies, are relevant to marine systems and ideal for multispecies toxicity testing, contributing to broader environmental impact discussions. To conduct toxicity bioassays, seasonal evaluations were performed in fall, winter, spring, and summer. Brine shrimp displayed seasonal variations in toxicity values, with notable mortality rates during winter. Nannochloropsis oceanica was the most sensitive species, showing moderate toxicity across seasons. Areas impacted by pollution sources, such as wastewater and maritime traffic, exhibited the highest toxicity levels (PA3 and PA4). These fluctuations underscore the need to consider seasonal and local conditions when assessing organism sensitivity to seawater contaminants. Additionally, they reveal the complex interplay between environmental factors, water quality, and organism responses in marine ecosystems.

PURPOSE: It is unknown whether the biomechanics of the posterior ligamentous complex (PLC) are impaired in individuals undergoing surgery for adult spinal deformity (ASD). Characterizing these properties may improve our understanding of proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK; defined as proximal junctional angle [PJA] of >10 deg from UIV-1 to UIV + 2), as well as proximal junctional failure (PJF; symptomatic PJK requiring revision). The purpose of this prospective observational study is to compare biomechanical properties of the PLC in individuals with ASD who do, and do not develop PJK or PJF within 1 year of spinal fusion surgery. METHODS: Intraoperative biopsies of PLC were obtained from 32 consecutive patients undergoing spinal fusions for ASD (>4 levels). Ligament peak force, tensile stress, tensile strain, and elastic modulus (EM) were measured with a materials testing system. Biomechanical properties and tissue dimensions were correlated with age, gender, BMI, vitamin D level, osteoporosis, sagittal alignment, PJA and change in PJA preoperatively, within 3 months, and at 1 year postoperatively. RESULTS: Longer ligaments were associated with greater PJA change at 3 months (p = 0.04), and thinner ligaments were associated with greater PJA change at 1 year (r = 0.57, p = 0.01). Greater EM was associated with greater PJA at both 3 months and 1 year (p = 0.03). Five participants had a change in PJA of >10 1 year postoperatively, and three participants demonstrated PJF. EM was significantly higher in individuals who required revision surgery (p = 0.003), and ligament length was greater (p = 0.03). Preoperative sagittal alignment was not related to incidence of revision surgery (p > 0.10). CONCLUSIONS: The biomechanical properties of the PLC may be associated with higher risk for proximal failure. Ligaments that are longer, thinner, and less elastic are associated with higher postoperative PJA. Furthermore stiffer EM of the ligament is associated with the need for revision surgery.

Background and Objectives: Mitigating post-operative complications is a key metric of success following interbody fusion. LLIF is associated with a unique complication profile when compared to other approaches, and while numerous studies have attempted to report the incidence of post-operative complications, there is currently no consensus regarding their definitions or reporting structure. The aim of this study was to standardize the classification of complications specific to lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF). Materials and Methods: A search algorithm was employed to identify all the articles that described complications following LLIF. A modified Delphi technique was then used to perform three rounds of consensus among twenty-six anonymized experts across seven countries. Published complications were classified as major, minor, or non-complications using a 60% agreement threshold for consensus. Results: A total of 23 articles were extracted, describing 52 individual complications associated with LLIF. In Round 1, forty-one of the fifty-two events were identified as a complication, while seven were considered to be approach-related occurrences. In Round 2, 36 of the 41 events with complication consensus were classified as major or minor. In Round 3, forty-nine of the fifty-two events were ultimately classified into major or minor complications with consensus, while three events remained without agreement. Vascular injuries, long-term neurologic deficits, and return to the operating room for various etiologies were identified as important consensus complications following LLIF. Non-union did not reach significance and was not classified as a complication. Conclusions: These data provide the first, systematic classification scheme of complications following LLIF. These findings may improve the consistency in the future reporting and analysis of surgical outcomes following LLIF.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the concentration, types and characteristics (size, morphology and color, as well as polymer composition) of MPs in surface sediments in two streams in an Andean region of Peru. Surface sediment samples were collected in Ishoj stream (11 sampling sites) and Uyru Rume stream (8 sampling sites), and density separation was performed using high-density saline solution (zinc chloride, ZnCl2) to separate the MPs from the sediment. The concentration of MPs ranged from 0 - 2216 items/Kg (Ishoj stream) and 0 - 6383 items/Kg (Uyru Rume stream). In both streams, the maximum concentration of MPs was in the sites located near the dumps (solid waste collection, downstream) and the minimum value was found in the sites located in the upper zone. The size, morphology and predominant color in both streams were less than 1 mm, fragment and transparent, respectively. No MPs were found in pellet form. PP (polypropylene) was the predominant MPs in Raman analysis. All MPs were secondary. This study report contamination by MPs in streams in Andean zones.

In the context of natural hazard risk quantification and modeling of hazard interactions, some literature separates “Level I” (or occurrence) interactions from “Level II” (or consequence) interactions. The Level I interactions occur inherently due to the nature of the hazards, independently of the presence of physical assets. In such cases, one hazard event triggers or modifies the occurrence of another (e.g., flooding due to heavy rain, liquefaction and landslides triggered by an earthquake), thus creating a dependency between the features characterizing such hazard events. They differ from Level II interactions, which instead occur through impacts/consequences on physical assets/components and systems (e.g., accumulation of physical damage or social impacts due to earthquake sequences, landslides due to the earthquake-induced collapse of a retaining structure). Multi-hazard life cycle consequence (LCCon) analysis aims to quantify the consequences (e.g., repair costs, downtime, casualty rates) throughout a system’s service life and should account for both Level I and II interactions. The available literature generally considers Level I interactions – the focus of this study – mainly defining relevant taxonomies, often qualitatively, without providing a computational framework to simulate a sequence of hazard events incorporating the identified interrelations among them. This paper addresses this gap, proposing modeling approaches associated with different types of Level I interactions. It describes a simulation-based method for generating multi-hazard event sets (i.e., a sequence of hazard events and associated features throughout the system’s life cycle) based on the theory of competing Poisson processes. The proposed approach incorporates the different types of interactions in a sequential Monte Carlo sampling method. The method outputs multi-hazard event sets that can be integrated into LCCon frameworks to quantify interacting hazard consequences. An application incorporating several hazard interactions is presented to illustrate the potential of the proposed method.

Background/Objectives: Rapid cycle analysis (RCA) is an established and efficient methodology that has been traditionally utilized by United States health authorities to monitor post-approval vaccine safety. Initially developed in the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) in early 2000s, RCA has evolved into a valuable approach for timely post-approval signal detection. Due to the availability of additional near real-time data sources and enhanced analytic approaches, the use of RCA has expanded. This narrative review provides an in-depth assessment of studies that utilized RCA for safety surveillance to detect and evaluate safety signals in post-approval vaccine monitoring. Methods: Embase and Medline were searched on 8 August 2024 to identify post-approval non-interventional vaccine safety studies using RCA or other near real-time surveillance methods published from 1 January 2018 to 31 July 2024. Data on study characteristics (e.g., study population, data source, outcomes) and RCA methodological characteristics (e.g., type of comparator, sequential testing method, confounding control method) were extracted from the eligible RCA studies. Results: Of 1128 articles screened, 18 RCA vaccine safety studies were included, of which 17 (94.4%) were conducted in the United States (US). Twelve (67%) aimed at signal detection and six (33%) conducted further signal evaluation. Over 60% examined COVID-19 vaccine safety, with half using VSD. Over 80% conducted the RCA weekly or monthly and about 78% of the studies used a database-specific historical comparator group. Conclusions: This review indicates that most of the published articles on the application of the RCA methodology in vaccine safety studies are based on research conducted in the US. With increasing availability of near real-time data sources and advanced analytic methods capabilities, RCA is expected to be more widely deployed as an active surveillance tool to complement traditional pharmacovigilance. Future studies should explore the extension of vaccine RCA methodology for non-vaccine medicinal products.

In the Neotropical biogeographic region, there are about 290 known species and subspecies of fleas, which have as their main hosts to the rodent subfamily Sigmodontinae. In Peru, more than 22 years have passed since the last list of known flea species was published. This study presents a review and update of the fleas recorded in Peru from 1908 to 2024. This list contains information on the flea species, including their known hosts, the localities in Peru where they were reported, the main references and some comments. In addition, the specificity of flea–host interactions was assessed using an interaction network approach. In the literature review, 86 flea species were found distributed among 9 families, 34 genera and 19 subspecies. These fleas were recorded parasitizing at least71 species of mammals and birds (14 orders, 28 families, 54 genera), 15 reported only at the genera level and seven undetermined ones. The flea–host interaction network exhibited a modular structure, indicating that these interactions tend to be specialized. A sigmodontine rodent (Akodon mollis) and a Rhopalopsyllidae flea (Polygenis litargus) were highly connected across modules and the overall network, and thus were important to maintain the structure. This review contributes to the knowledge of fleas in Peru, synthesizing the scattered information and providing information on the interaction they have with their hosts.

Polls mastegadors (Psocodea, Phthiraptera: Amblycera i Ischnocera) en ocells silvestres de Zungarococha, Iquitos (Perú) L'objectiu d'aquest treball va ser identificar les espècies de polls mastegadors recol·lectades en 30 ocells silvestres de la localitat de Zungarococha, Iquitos, Perú. Es van identificar 11 espècies de polls entre els 36 espècimens en total. L'espècie Columbicola passerinae (Wilson, 1941) va presentar el nombre més alt d'hostes i Motmotnirmus marginellus (Nitzsch, 1874) i Docophorus rufus (Kellogg, 1899) la prevalença, intensitat i abundància mitjana més elevades. Aquest estudi registra per primera vegada 11 espècies de polls i noves associacions d'hostes i amplia la llista d’ocells hostes al Perú.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) acquires unique properties to regulate neuronal function during development. The formation of the BBB, which occurs in tandem with angiogenesis, is directed by the Wnt/[beta]-catenin signaling pathway. Yet the exact molecular interplay remains elusive. Our study reveals the G protein-coupled receptor GPR126 as a critical target of canonical Wnt signaling, essential for the development of the BBB's distinctive vascular characteristics and its functional integrity. Endothelial cell-specific deletion of the Gpr126 gene in mice induced aberrant vascular morphogenesis, resulting in disrupted BBB organization. Simultaneously, heightened transcytosis in vitro compromised barrier integrity, resulting in enhanced vascular permeability. Mechanistically, GPR126 enhanced endothelial cell migration, pivotal for angiogenesis, acting through an interaction between LRP1 and [[beta].sub.1] integrin, thereby balancing the levels of [[beta].sub.1] integrin activation and recycling.
