Introduction.Recently, the development of tunable microwave photonic filters has attracted great scientific and practical interest. Such microwave photonic filters are a good alternative to traditional electrical solutions, due to low losses, wide operating frequency range and such filters can be easily integrated into various telecommunication systems. By using an acetylene reference cell and a laser with tunable wavelength can make it possible to create tunable microwave photonic filter with wide operating frequency range.Aim.Investigation of the characteristic of a tunable microwave photonic filter based on an acetylene reference cell, as well as research possible solution to reduce losses in filter bandwidth; numerical simulation of microwave photonic filter characteristics.Materials and methods.Experimental study was carried out on an experimental prototype of a tunable microwave photonic filter. The filter consisted of a laser with a tunable wavelength, a phase modulator, an acetylene reference cell, an optical fiber connecting the gas cell with a photodetector, and a photodetector. Theoretical study was carried out by modeling of the transmission characteristics of the microwave photonic filter.Results.Experimental transmission characteristics of a tunable microwave photonic filter were obtained. The tuning of the filter bandwidth by tuning laser wavelength was studied. Modeling of transmission characteristics of microwave photonic filter was performed. Possible solution to reduce losses in filter bandwidth was proposed.Conclusion.A tunable microwave photonic filter based on an acetylene reference cell is proposed. Losses in the filter bandwidth was about −30 dB. Using high-power laser and a photodetector with a high photocurrent can reduce losses in the filter bandwidth.

Zirconium (Zr) alloys are utilized as structural components for the cores of nuclear reactors due to the excellent combination of their mechanical properties and corrosion resistance under intense neutron irradiation conditions in water. The characteristics of microstructures formed during heat treatments play a crucial role in obtaining the operational performance of parts made from Zr alloys. This study investigates the morphological features of (α + β)-microstructures in the Zr-2.5Nb alloy, as well as the crystallographic relationships between α- and β-phases. These relationships are induced by the β→α(α″) displacive transformation that occurs during water quenching (WQ) and the diffusion-eutectoid transformation that takes place during furnace cooling (FC). To conduct this analysis, samples solution treated at 920 °C were examined using EBSD and TEM. The experimental distribution of α/β-misorientations for both cooling regimes deviates from the Burgers orientation relationship (BOR) at a discrete set of angles close to 0, 29, 35, and 43°. The experimental α/β-misorientation spectra are confirmed by crystallographic calculations for the β→α→β-transformation path based on the BOR. Similar spectra of misorientation angle distribution in α-phase and between α and β phases in Zr-2.5Nb after WQ and FC point to similar transformation mechanisms and the significant role of shear and shuffle in β→α-transformation.

The article presents an approach to the organization and management of the crop production process based on digitalization in an operating enterprise. The authors have given the basic components of the system of eight components, which are sufficient to fully organize and control the enterprises with an area of 10-15 thousand hectares. The authors also considered the structure of interaction of the eight components by process participants during the season and among themselves. The main achievements from the introduction of such a product, which exceeds the average indicators for this area by 2-10 times for certain criteria and allows increasing the efficiency of production by 1.5-2 times, are considered. A special feature of efficient production is the unique combination of technical means, the system of data accumulation, processing, and use, the high speed of decision-making on their basis, and the original author’s methods of forecasting pests and crop varieties. A single control center allows maximizing the potential of each resource (reduce component rates, increase the coefficient of soil moisture use, etc.), annually achieving the planned gross crop yield estimates at a given cost. The authors found that synergies between economics and technology must start with planning. The authors also presented a graphical representation of the process of working out the information to achieve the targets.

The carbonate leaching of scandium from the landfilled bauxite residue (red mud) of the Bogoslovsky Aluminum Plant (Russia) and samples of red mud (RM) after alkaline pretreatment has been investigated. The results of kinetic studies allowing to compare and evaluate the effectiveness of different conditions and intensification factors in the process of scandium leaching from RM in carbonate/bicarbonate media are presented. It was determined that for 2.0 mol L–1 Na2CO3 leaching solution ultrasonic treatment under gas (CO2) carbonation conditions in the pH range of 9.5–10.0 allows reducing the scandium leaching time by two times and reaching 40–45% scandium extraction. Leaching of RM in carbonate/bicarbonate media is accompanied by secondary processes (adsorption, hydrolysis, and coprecipitation) leading to a decrease in scandium extraction. The obtained results allow improving understanding of scandium chemical behavior in complex aqueous carbonate/bicarbonate systems and can be used for the optimization of the alternative carbonate process for scandium extraction from RM.

Observation of high energy and very high emission from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is crucial to study the gigantic explosion and the underline processes. With a large field-of-view and almost full duty cycle, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), is appropriate to monitor the very high energy emission from unpredictable transients such as GRBs. Nevertheless, the main issue for an extensive air shower array is the high energy threshold which limits the horizon of the detector. To address this issue a new trigger method is developed in this article to lower the energy threshold of WCDA for GRB observation. The proposed method significantly improves the detection efficiency of WCDA for gamma-rays around the GRB direction at 10-300 GeV. The sensitivity of the WCDA for GRB detection with the new trigger method is estimated. The achieved sensitivity of the quarter WCDA array above 10 GeV is comparable with that of Fermi-LAT. The data analysis process and corresponding fluence upper limit for GRB 190719C is presented as an example.

Electron backscatter diffraction is a modern experimental method for local structure and texture investigation, which makes it possible to establish the presence and types of the various boundaries between the elements of the mesostructure such as low or high angle, special and interphase boundaries. Moreover, this technique can demonstrate the migration of boundaries during structural and phase transformations. This study estimated the possible spectrum of crystallographic misorientations of intercrystalline boundaries in additively manufactured titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V using orientation microscopy and crystallographic calculations based on Burgers orientation relationship during β→α-transformation. The study has established that the boundaries between grains of α-phase are characterized by the misorientation angles of 11±2 °, 61±5 °, 89±3 °. The majority of high-angle boundaries are characterized by misorientation angles in the range of 57-65 °. The study also ascertained that the experimental spectrum of intercrystalline boundaries in the α-phase reveals the displacive nature of β→α-transformation in titanium alloys.

The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt (PeV; 1015 electronvolts) indicates the existence of the so-called PeVatrons—cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. We need to locate and identify such objects to find the origin of Galactic cosmic rays1. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh-energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref. 2). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 PeV have been reported from a few objects in the Galactic plane3–6, unbiased identification and in-depth exploration of PeVatrons requires detection of γ-rays with energies well above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the detection of more than 530 photons at energies above 100 teraelectronvolts and up to 1.4 PeV from 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources with a statistical significance greater than seven standard deviations. Despite having several potential counterparts in their proximity, including pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants and star-forming regions, the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy γ-rays have not yet been firmly localized and identified (except for the Crab Nebula), leaving open the origin of these extreme accelerators. Observations of γ-rays with energies up to 1.4 PeV find that 12 sources in the Galaxy are PeVatrons, one of which is the Crab Nebula.

A model is developed to identify the main factors and analyze their influence on normal displacements of a roadway surface under the action of a moving load. The model takes into account a multilayer road structure and rheological properties of the ground. The upper layers of asphalt concrete are modeled as a relatively rigid layer, the disconnected layers between the asphalt concrete and the ground are modeled by a base with a Winkler layer, and the soil is considered a viscoelastic half-space. The influence of the sliding velocity, interlayer adhesion, and rheological properties of the ground on surface deformation is analyzed. The effect of reducing maximal surface displacements with increasing sliding velocity is obtained. The developed computational program is designed for use in interpreting measurements of road surface displacements with equipment that provides the surface with a uniform load moving at a constant velocity.

Crystallographic relationships between α- and β-phases resulting from phase transformations, which took place during the continuous water quenching (WQ), air cooling (AC) and furnace cooling (FC) of a Ti6Al4V plates solution treated at 1065 °C, were investigated by methods of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). WQ, AC and FC resulted in typical martensite, basket-weave and parallel-plate Widmanstatten structures, respectively. The experimental distribution of α/β-misorientations deviated from BOR at set discrete angles close to 22, 30, 35 and 43°. The experimental spectra of angles were confirmed by theoretical calculations of the possible misorientations between the α and β phases through the βo→α→βII –transformation path based on Burgers orientation relationship (BOR). Joint analysis of the experimental data and theoretical calculations revealed that the secondary βII-phase was precipitated according to the sequence βo→α→βII during continuous cooling from the single-phase β-region. Similar spectra for α/β-phase misorientations for all investigated cooling rates acknowledged the similar transformation mechanisms and dominant shear component of the phase transformations. © 2022 by the authors. It is possible to increase the efficiency of using fossil fuels and to reduce thermal emissions into the environment and the emission of hazardous greenhouse gases by using thermotransformers (TTs) that utilize low-potential waste heat originating from man-caused sources to heat water for heating and hot water supply (HWS). As the main sources of low-grade waste heat, we have considered water circulation systems in heat power and industry as well as waste smoke fumes in boiler houses. The utilization of smoke fume heat (including latent) is the most relevant type of energy saving and of primary fuel saving, which additionally includes environmental benefits implemented by means of reducing nitrogen oxide emission. This paper proposes a scheme for the profound utilization of the heat obtained from combustion products of gas boilers using a condensation heat exchanger-utilizer and a lithium bromide absorption heat pump (LBAHP) with two-stage absorption. The analysis of the efficiency of this technology is carried out and the prospects for its implementation in gas boiler houses in Russia are considered. Studies have shown the feasibility of using LBAHP with two-stage absorption at existing large power facilities (thermal power from 116.3 MW and greater) and at small autonomous gas boiler houses (thermal power lower than 116.3 MW). The theoretical transformation ratio of LBAHP with profound utilization of smoke fumes amounts up to 1.71, whereas the saving of primary fuel in LBAHP amounts to 40% as to compared to a hot-water gas boiler. The economic effect of LBAHP significantly increases if it is used in the mode of a chilling machine for technological cooling and air conditioning in the warm season.

A numerical-analytical method is proposed for calculating contact pressures and internal stresses arising in a two-layered elastic half-space when a smooth indenter of arbitrary shape is pressed in, considering the adhesion forces. The Maugis–Dugdale model of adhesive interaction is used in formulation of the problem. The influence of the coating thickness and the presence of adhesive attraction on the indenter penetration, as well as on the internal stresses inside the coating and the substrate, are analyzed. Simulation results can be used to solve the inverse problem of determining the elastic modulus of the coating from the indentation results considering the adhesion and deformation of the substrate.

The liquid–liquid extraction, recovery of Np(VI) and Np(V) from the solution of Na2CO3 by methyltrioctylammonium carbonate in toluene was investigated. By the graphic slope analyses method, as well as by recording of absorption spectra for obtained solutions and method of calculated determination of solution properties taking into account water activity, composition was established for the carbonate complexes of Np(VI) and Np(V) being extracted, which, depending on extraction conditions, can be expressed by the following formulae’s: (R4N)2[NpVIO2(CO3)2], (R4N)3[NpVO2(CO3)2], (R4N)6[NpVIO2(CO3)4], (R4N)2[NpVIO2(CO3)2]·2(R4N)2CO3, (R4N)5[NpVO2(CO3)3], (R4N)7[NpVO2(CO3)4], (R4N)3[NpVO2(CO3)2]·(1–2)(R4N)2CO3, where R4N is the quaternary ammonium cation. The results have been obtained in the experiments, has much interest both in the field of alkaline radioactive waste management and with respect to their usage for extraction of transuranium elements during reprocessing of alkaline radioactive waste, as well as for liquid–liquid extraction purification of uranium and plutonium from admixtures of fission products. These techniques are used within the framework of a new alternative method for reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel in carbonate media the CARBEX (CARBonate EXtraction) process.

The heat of combustion and the enthalpy of formation of 7,7′-bis(terfurazan[3,4-b:3,4′-d:3″,4″-f]azepine (I) and 1,1′-dioxide-7,7′-bis(terfurazan[3,4-b:3,4′-d:3″,4″-f] azepine (II), were experimentally determined. Product I was studied by X-ray diffraction analysis, and its crystallographic characteristics were determined. The efficiency of using compounds I and II as components of solid composite propellants was analyzed, and the type of compositions in which they are more effective than HMX was determined.

The gamma-ray background problem is known to be acute in any low-background underground experiment. The variations of this background depend on many parameters and should be taken into account when interpreting the results of experiments combined under the term “underground physics”. This paper is devoted to studying the long-term variations of the gamma-ray background in an underground laboratory with a scintillation detector based on a CsI crystal. Our studies have revealed a new effect in underground physics—a delayed nonlinear pumping effect for the gamma-ray background in an underground room that can lead to a significant rise of this background at an anomalously low atmospheric pressure.

An example of samples with a cellular architecture, obtained by selective laser melting, is used to study the influence of the building direction of cellular objects on the characteristics of fracture under cyclic loading. The origin of their fracture has been revealed. The mechanism providing increased fatigue fracture resistance of objects which, along with the cellular structure, have anisotropy of properties due to the technological features of their production has been determined.

The heat of combustion and enthalpy of formation of bis(4 $$''$$ -nitro[3,3 $$'$$ :4 $$'$$ ,3 $$''$$ ]terfurazan-4-yl)-diazene (DNFNF) and (bis(4 $$''$$ -azido-[3,3 $$'$$ :4 $$'$$ ,3 $$''$$ ]terfurazan-4-yl)-diazene (DAzFNF) were first experimentally determined. It is found that the energy increment for replacing the nitro group with an azide group in the furazan cycle averages 290 kJ/mol and is close to the increment for replacing NO2 with N3 in trinitroethane. The dependence of the energy parameters of metal-free rocket propellants based on a mixture of ammonium perchlorate and DNFNF or DAzFNF with an active binder on the content of the high-enthalpy component in the formulation was studied by thermodynamic analysis.

The finite element simulation of compression test of a lattice structure, made of Ti-6-4, produced by additive technology, was implemented. The cellular material was designed from the intersecting cylindrical struts with the orthogonal arrangement of horizontal and vertical struts. The distribution of equivalent stresses was estimated. The most loaded were the struts, the axis of which was parallel to the axis of loading. The maximum equivalent stresses were observed at the junction of struts. The analysis of the cross-section of the struts revealed that equivalent stresses in the central regions of the struts were about 50% less than those on the surface.

A solution method is proposed for a 3-D contact problem that considers an indenter sliding over a viscoelastic half-space covered with a Winkler layer. Analysis of the contact pressure distribution, deformation component of the friction force, and internal stresses depending on the properties of elastic layer and other input parameters was carried out. It is shown that the presence of an elastic layer decreases the deformation component of the friction force and also leads to a significant decrease in the internal stresses of the substrate.

Liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) of microamounts of americium(III) from Na2CO3 and Na2CO3–H2O2 aqueous solution using methyltrioctylammonium (MTOA) carbonate in toluene has been studied. The distribution ratio of americium(III) into the organic phase can reach values of > 200 from aqueous phases of dilute Na2CO3 and H2O2. With an increase in concentration of Na2CO3 and H2O2 the value of distribution ratio of americium(III) decreases. The stoichiometry of the extracted species of americium(III) was determined on the basis of the slope analysis method. The extracted species are R4N[Am(CO3)2] and (R4N)3[Am(CO3)3], where R4N is MTOA.

Aim. Modelling and calculations were were carried out to justify the tactical capabilities of gas and smoke protection units of the fire and rescue units as primary units carrying out fire reconnaissance and rescue of victim s of fires. A methodology for assessing actions of personnel of fire departments when rescuing victims was analysed.Method. An experimental justification is given for the need to adjust the calculation methods for determining the working parameters of gas and smoke protection units when organising mass rescue of victims of a fire. A model is proposed for considering the actions of the fireteam of a gas and smoke protection service based on graph theory. Various approaches to forecasting operational parameters of gas and smoke protection units in fire services are considered.Results. Factors determining the limiting parameters of the gas and smoke protection units are presented along with examples for calculating operational parameters during mass rescue of victims of a fire.Conclusion. A conclusion is formulated regarding complicating factors of the work of the personnel of the gas and smoke protection service in the coefficient, considering the necessary air supply for the return trip, unforeseen circumstances and average air flow.

The structure and phase composition of biocompatible titanium alloys of composition (wt %) Ti–10Zr–1.2Nb–1.5Al, Ti–6Al–4V (ELI), Ti–15Mo, and Ti–36.1Nb–3.8Zr–2.4Ta–1.9Sn have been studied in a hot-deformed state using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The analysis of mechanical tensile properties has been performed depending on the structure and the aluminum strength equivalent of the alloys. The elasticity moduli of the alloys have been determined using tensile tests, dynamic mechanical analysis, and microindentation; the comparability of values within the error of 3–7% has been established. The nonmonotonic character of the change of the elasticity modulus upon heating to 550°C is explained in terms of the occurrence of processes of stress relaxation and recovery in the Ti–10Zr–1.2Nb–1.5Al, and Ti–6Al–4V ELI alloys and based on the precipitation of the high-modulus ω phase in the Ti–15Mo alloy. For the Ti–36.1Nb–3.8Zr–2.4Ta–1.9Sn alloy, the realization of the elinvar effect has been demonstrated. A correlation of the rate of change in the elasticity modulus with the heating temperature and the ratio of α and β phases in the structure of the alloys has been established.

The article studies logistic functions, processes and procedures accompanying all stages of full physical life cycle of new durable goods. The term ‘new’ means here an original product possessing new values for customers or a product – modification, which in comparison with the basic product has higher productivity, economical and ecological characteristics and possibilities of utilization. Durable goods include technical devices, such as production equipment and transportation means. The full physical life cycle is split into stages and step of their executions. Actually each stage is connected with logistic procedures: opportunity to get new materials and components at the project stage; estimating the number of parts taken from the basic product for the product-modification at the project stage; decision-making concerning out-sourcing and in-sourcing at the pre-production stage; evaluating the stock of material and technical resources at the enterprise at the production stage; expanding the existing distribution channels and searching for new ones at the marketing stage; calculating the need in material resources for warranty service at the operation stage. The article shows also certain lines in developing advance logistics, such reverse logistics, re-cycling logistics and green logistics. These lines van serve as land marks for developers of more economical and ecological technical devices, including transportation means, storage and shop equipment, as well as for developers of low-waste and logistic technologies.

Thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP) is employed to obtain the required level of mechanical properties of contemporary HSLA steel plates utilized for gas and oil pipeline production. The strength and crack resistance of pipeline steels are mainly determined by its microstructure and crystallographic texture. In this study, the influence of the structural and textural states of industrially produced API-5L X70-X80 pipeline steels on tensile mechanical properties was analyzed. TMCP routes with different hot rolling temperatures and cooling rates were employed. The texture of steel was assessed using the Taylor factor, which was calculated based on electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The decrease in rolling temperature resulted in the sharper texture characterized by {001} planes banding (cleavage planes in the bcc lattice) parallel to rolling direction. The tensile deformation behavior at the stage of necking was determined by the crystallographic and morphological texture of the material and demonstrated significant anisotropy. Rupture of all investigated samples was accompanied by the development of splitting on the fracture surface. The splitting was localized in the rolling plane similar to the splitting in standard Charpy tests of pipeline steels.

Corresponding research was carried out to assess if the porous structures with modified diamond-shaped lattice cells can provide better integrity of the constructions in the case of overloading. The aim of the study is designing the structures with high porosity for the biomedical applications (implants) having good load bearing capacity. Studied lattice structures are based on the modified tetrahedral beam-based cells with spherical reinforcements at the beam joints and variable beam diameter. Samples with a porosity of 50–80% were studied in present research. Structures were additively manufactured from a titanium alloy Ti–6Al–4V using SLM. Sample compression tests were carried out according to the ISO 13314 standard. Loading experiments were carried out and critical parameters extracted from the stress-strain curves. Finite element modeling was carried out for the analysis of the stress and assessment of the potential failure mechanisms. Corresponding hypothesis explaining the appearance of shear bands in porous structures under compression is formulated. Obtained results show that when the sample porosity rises from 50% to 80%, corresponding plateau stress decreases by 13 times, first maximum compressive strength decreases by 12 times, and compression offset stress decreases by 12 times, while the plateau end does not change significantly. The experiments revealed the barrel distortion of the samples geometry, which corresponds to the general knowledge how the friction between the solid compressing surfaces (anvils of the compression testing machine) and the lattice affects the sample deformation. Compression experiments also revealed the formation of shear bands during sample deformation. The stochastic nature of their development suggests that the main reason of shear bands appearing is the initial inhomogeneity of the boundary conditions of the experiment. Suggested modifications of the basic cells show a good potential for achieving regular beam-based lattice structures with high porosity and increased load bearing capacity. More experiments are needed for statistical analysis, and improvements of the loading experiments methodology for better failure mode analysis are planned for the future. © 2021 The Authors. We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. Titanium alloys based on orthorhombic titanium aluminide Ti2AlNb are promising refractory materials for aircraft engine parts in the operating temperature range from 600–700 °C. Parts made of Ti2AlNb-based alloys by traditional technologies, such as casting and metal forming, have not yet found wide application due to the sensitivity of processability and mechanical properties in chemical composition and microstructure compared with commercial solid-solution-based titanium alloys. In the last three decades, metal additive manufacturing (MAM) has attracted the attention of scientists and engineers for the production of intermetallic alloys based on Ti2AlNb. This review summarizes the recent achievements in the production of O-phase-based Ti alloys using MAM, including the analysis of the feedstock materials, technological processes, machines, microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties. Powder bed fusion (PBF) and direct energy deposition (DED) are the most widely employed MAM processes to produce O-phase alloys. MAM provides fully dense, fine-grained material with a superior combination of mechanical properties at room temperature. Further research on MAM for the production of critical parts made of Ti2AlNb-based alloys can be focused on a detailed study of the influence of post-processing and chemical composition on the formation of the structure and mechanical properties, including cyclic loading, fracture toughness, and creep resistance.

Ga2O3 layers with thickness from 10 to 86 μm were grown by halide vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) on GaN(0001)/sapphire templates in a hot wall reactor at 570 °C, with the growth rate of about 3–4 μm h−1. The grown layers consisted of pure (001)-oriented κ-Ga2O3 polymorph with no admixture of β-Ga2O3 or α-Ga2O3 phases. The narrowest (004) X-ray rocking curves were observed for 13–20 μm thick κ-Ga2O3 layers. A further increase in thickness results in deterioration of the crystal quality which is indicated by the broadening of rocking curves. Electrical measurements of the thick layers revealed that they were n-type, with the concentration of shallow donors gradually decreasing from ∼1016 cm−3 to ∼1015 cm−3. Deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurements revealed the presence of deep traps with levels near Ec−0.3 eV, Ec−0.6 eV, Ec−0.7 eV, Ec−0.8 eV, Ec−1 eV, with the Ec−0.8 eV being predominant.

The study of a long-lived atmospheric plasmoid has been continued. (Gatchina plasmoid). The electric charge of the plasmoid was detected earlier by us using a plasma probe. Here the measuring equipment was improved, which allowed to take into account the influence of bias current. The measured charge of the negative plasmoid was about -35 nC. The cause of the electric charge is investigated. It consists in the inhomogeneity of the plasma and, as a consequence, a special configuration of the electric field during discharge. In the column of emission plasma above the central electrode, the field is directed into the plasmoid (for positive central electrode). In streamers coming out of the plasmoid and in space above the plasmoid, the field is directed outward. To find out the reason for the appearance of the charge, the Gauss theorem is applied. The column of emission plasma gives a small contribution to the integral. The integral will be determined by the second section having a different sign. Thus, the plasmoid has a charge during discharge. After the current is turned off, the charge is retained due to the rapid cooling of the plasma. It is noted that when obtaining other long-lived plasmoids, there is a similar configuration of the field during discharge. A similar discharge structure occurs when a linear lightning strikes the electric network and a ball lightning appears from an electrical outlet, a speaker, etc. This work introduces a new object of plasma physics a charged atmospheric plasmoid. Two-inch diameter α-Ga2O3 films with thickness ∼4 μm were grown on basal plane sapphire by Halide Vapor Phase Epitaxy (HVPE) and doped with Sn in the top ∼1 μm from the surface. These films were characterized with High-Resolution X-ray Diffraction (HRXRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) imaging in the Secondary Electron (SE) and Micro-cathodoluminescence (MCL) modes, contactless sheet resistivity mapping, capacitance-voltage, current-voltage, admittance spectra, and Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy (DLTS) measurements. The edge and screw dislocations densities estimated from HRXRD data were respectively 7.4 × 109 cm−2 and 1.5 × 107 cm−2, while the films had a smooth surface with a low density (∼103 cm−2) of circular openings with diameters between 10 and 100 μm. The sheet resistivity of the films varied over the entire 2-inch diameter from 200 to 500 Ω square−1. The net donor concentration was ∼1018 cm−3 near the surface and increased to ∼4 × 1018 cm−3 deeper inside the sample. The deep traps observed in admittance and DLTS spectra had levels at Ec−0.25 eV and Ec−0.35 eV, with concentration ∼1015 cm−3 and Ec−1 eV with concentration ∼1016 cm−3.

Introduction/Background* Approximately 15-30% high-grade serous ovarian carcinomas (HGSOCs) are caused by BRCA1/2 germ-line mutations. BRCA1/2 testing of consecutive HGSOC cases is logistically less complicated than the search for women with other clinical signs of BRCA1/2 syndrome (e.g., family history, young age or emergence of multiple cancers). We reasoned that this would be the most straightforward approach to identify ethnicity-specific mutations and investigated patients of Chechen origin. Chechens are a Northeast Caucasian ethnic group consisting of approximately 2 million people. This community is characterized by carefully preserved national and religious traditions, with a relatively low rate of interethnic marriage, and, consequently, high probability of persistence of founder alleles. Methodology Coding sequences of BRCA1, BRCA2, ATM, TP53 and PALB2 genes were analyzed by next generation sequencing. Result(s)* We initially included in the study 67 consecutive Chechen patients with HGSOC. Pathogenic BRCA1/2 alleles were detected in 12/67 (18%) HGSOC cases; all 8 women with BRCA1 mutation carried the same pathogenic variant (c.3627_3628delAG), while some genetic diversity was observed among BRCA2 heterozygous patients (p.Q3299X: n = 2; c.5345dupA: n = 1; c.7408_7409delTT: n = 1). Given the high frequency of mutations in BRCA1 gene, we added to the study 44 consecutive patients with triple-negative breast cancer. This effort relied on the fact, that BRCA1 is specifically associated with the triple-negative phenotype of breast cancer disease; 3 (7%) additional BRCA1 mutation carriers (c.3627_3628delAG: n = 2; c.1338_1339delAG: n = 1) were revealed. All patients with the BRCA1 c.3627_3628delAG pathogenic variant also carried linked c.1067G>A (p.Q356R) polymorphic substitution; therefore, BRCA1 c.3627_3628delAG is indeed a founder allele, but not a mutational hot spot. In addition to BRCA1/2, one HGSOC patient carried ATM truncating variant (p.Q1171X). There were no instances of PALB2 or TP53 germline alterations. Conclusion* This is a small-scale study, which resulted in convincing demonstration of a strong founder effect in Chechen women with hereditary breast-ovarian cancer. Genetic testing of non-selected HGSOC patients allows highly efficient analysis of ethnicity-specific spectrum of BRCA1/2 mutations.

The present work develops a novel unified approach to describe the crystal structure of orthorhombic martensite (α′′) in Ti alloys independent of chemical composition. By employing a straightforward yet highly instructive solid sphere model for the basic tetrahedral structural unit the crystal structures involved in the β ↔ α′′/α′ martensitic transformation are categorized into several intermediate configurations. Importantly, a new metric is introduced, δ, which unambiguously characterizes the atomic positions inside the orthorhombic unit cell depending on unit-cell geometry. Furthermore, the exclusive use of relative quantities to describe unit-cell geometry and atom positions renders the approach developed herein independent of alloy content. In this way, shortcomings of commonly suggested structural metrics for α′′ are eliminated. Subsequently, the novel methodology is applied to analyse and compare the crystal structure of α′′ across a broad range of Ti alloys based on experimentally measured unit-cell parameters. From this analysis it emerges that a large fraction of structural configurations along the b.c.c.-Cmcm-h.c.p. transformation path is not observed in quenched alloys. The threshold between the not-observed and the remaining well observed configurations is identified with an ideal Cmcm crystal structure, relative to which the experimentally found α′′ is compressed along its c axis. © 2021 International Union of Crystallography.
