(1) Background: The double burden of malnutrition (DBM) is an emerging public health concern among children and adolescents in developing countries. This study investigated the prevalence and factors associated with being underweight and overweight among adolescents. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 423 adolescents across 10 high schools in Harare. A questionnaire was used to collect data and weight for height-z-scores were used to compute body mass index. Pearson’s Chi-Square and multinomial logistic regression were used to test for associations and explore factors associated with being underweight or overweight at (p < 0.05). (3) Results: The median and IQR range for the participants was 16 (14–19) years. There were more girls 53.2%, than boys 46.8% (p = 0.002), and more 14–16-year-olds 54.1%, than 17–19-year-olds (p = 0.070). More boys 10% than girls 9.1% were underweight, whereas more girls 21.8% than boys 9.3% were overweight and obese (p = 0.002). By age, more 14–16-year -olds were underweight 12.7% than 17–19-year-olds 5.9%, whereas more 17–19-year-olds 16.2% were overweight than 14–16-year-olds (p = 0.070). Significant factors associated with being underweight were inadequate balanced nutrition knowledge [OR = 1.49 (0.139–0.997), p = 0.049], being in the 14–16 years age group [OR = 2.56 (1.137–5.779), p = 0.023], having formally employed [OR = 2.34 (1.008–5.428), p = 0.048] and unemployed [OR = 5.17 (1.263–21.116), p = 0.022] household heads. Significant factors associated with overweight were being a girl [OR = 0.32 (0.168–2.561), p < 0.001, and having formally employed household heads [OR = 2.00 (1.044–1.206), p = 0.037]. The employment status of the household head (being formally employed) was the only factor which associated with both underweight and overweight statuses. (4) Conclusions: Although underweight and overweight statuses co-exist, among adolescents, those who are overweight appear to be more than those who are underweight. Significant factors associated with being underweight were inadequate nutrition knowledge, being 14–16 years old, and having formally employed or unemployed parents. While being a girl and having formally employed parents were significant determinants of the overweight status. This paper calls for more awareness of DBM and context-specific interventions targeting obesity in a country where undernutrition has been traditionally prioritized at policy and program levels.

To compare the clinical outcomes of linezolid and vancomycin regimens combined with one-stage surgery in treating traumatic osteomyelitis of the limbs caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. A retrospective study was performed to analyze patients with traumatic osteomyelitis of the limbs attributable to MRSA infection. All of these patients received one-stage surgery to debride their wounds, with subsequent implantation of a vancomycin-loaded calcium sulfate artificial bone. Patients received either intravenous linezolid (study group) or vancomycin (control group) during the perioperative period. The postoperative inflammatory markers, renal function, duration of drainage catheter placement, duration of antibiotic administration, length of hospital stay, adverse events, and recurrence of osteomyelitis in these two groups were compared. The study group had a shorter duration of antibiotic administration and length of hospital stay (p < 0.05). There was a significant difference in the incidences of adverse events between the two groups (5.88% and 17.65% in the study and control groups, respectively, p < 0.05). There was no recurrence in either group during the three-year follow-up period. As of year, five after the surgery, one patient in the control group had a recurrence of osteomyelitis. The linezolid regimen should be preferred to the vancomycin regimen in patients with traumatic osteomyelitis of the extremities caused by MRSA infection because the linezolid regimen showed fewer adverse events, shorter periods of antibiotic use, and shorter hospital stay. However, both treatment regimens achieved satisfactory outcomes and warranted further investigations.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of nutrition education programme using the Convenient, Attractive, Normative (CAN) framework to facilitate changes in mindset, attitudes and behaviours towards food among high-school male baseball players. Design: Quasi-experimental design. Setting: Two public high schools in Osaka, Japan. Methods: Students in two high schools (mean age±SD, 16.6±.5years) participated in the study. One school served as an intervention group (n=28) and received the CAN nutrition education programme. The other school served as a control group (n=22), and students within it did not receive the intervention. Students in the intervention group received three nutrition lecture sessions and face-to-face individual nutritional guidance over a 4month intervention period. Before and after the intervention, all students were asked to record their food and beverage intake by taking food pictures, recording portion weights and sending these to the project dietitian. They were also asked to develop a dietary behaviour plan for meeting their goals. At the end of the intervention, they were asked about their experiences. Results: Students in the intervention improved their food intake, dietary balance and athletic performance. Bat swing speed was significantly faster following the intervention. Body weight increased without changing lean body mass in both groups. Conclusion: Results suggest that a CAN nutrition education programme may be effective in increasing motivation and promote dietary behaviour change among male adolescent athletes. Future interventions should examine these motivational processes and investigate the factors contributing to well-balanced meals.

Using the upper limbs to test cardiopulmonary exercise can be a useful option in the case of individuals who are unable to pedal a bicycle due to lower limb injury or disability. We evaluated whether exercise testing with the upper limbs can be used equivalently to that of the lower limbs in assessing exercise capacity. Nine collegiate rowers and eight collegiate cyclists underwent incremental exercise testing with an arm crank ergometer (ACE) and cycle ergometer (CE). Heart rate (HR) and oxygen uptake (VO2) were monitored throughout the tests. Segmental muscle mass and flow-mediated dilation of brachial artery were measured to assess the training status of the upper limbs. The muscle mass of the brachium, upper limb, and trunk were greater in the rowers than in the cyclists (p < 0.05). The correlations between HR and VO2 was significantly different depending on exercise modalities, ACE and CE, in both groups (p < 0.001). The estimated maximal VO2 using the correlation formula and age-predicted maximal HR was significantly lower in the exercise testing group with ACE than in the group with CE in rowers and cyclists (41.7 ± 7.3 vs. 52.6 ± 8.6 mL/kg/min, p = 0.010 and 35.5 ± 14.2 vs. 50.4 ± 13.4 mL/kg/min, p = 0.011, respectively). The results suggested that exercise capacity assessed by exercise testing with ACE is underestimated, regardless of the training status of the upper limbs. Further research is needed to verify factors which affect the correlations between HR and VO2 during upper- and lower-limb exercise.

The present paper describes an inspection method for gear nicks at the final assembly process for automotive transmissions. This method applies multi-scale time synchronous averaging and optimal filtering to ensure the quality of transmission gears against abnormal noise due to gear nicks. At present, a highly reliable method has been developed for measuring gear noise in the final transmission assembly inspection process. However, the inspection system has realized not to evaluate nick-induced noise quantitatively. Therefore, the nick noise evaluation still relies on skilled workers who can estimate it subjectively. Eventually, it may reveal nick-induced noise on rare occasions after mounting the transmission on a vehicle. To avoid that requires the mechanism of nicks-induced vibration to be apparent. This paper proposes a method that can detect nick-induced vibration with high reliability. It also enables itself to identify a nicked gear even among several gears on a shaft in a transmission. The proposed method was implemented in the test equipment for the final assembly inspection and used to measure the noise of CVT units built with nicked gears. The results confirmed that this method allows itself to detect nicks that were hard to discern in subjective estimations and leads to making it possible to identify nicked gears. This method secures quality assurance against abnormal noise induced by transmission gear nicks.

Bat swing velocity (BSV) is an imperative element of a successful baseball hitting performance. This study aimed to investigate the anthropometric and physiological variables associated with BSV and explore strength and conditioning programs to increase BSV in collegiate baseball players. Seventy-eight collegiate baseball players (mean age ± SD, 19.4 ± 1.0 years) participated in this study. Maximum BSV (km/h) was measured using Blast Baseball (Blast Motion Inc., Carlsbad, CA, USA). The anthropometric and physiological variables measured were height, body mass, lean body mass, grip strength, back muscle strength, the 30 m sprint, standing long jump, and backward overhead medicine ball throwing. Analysis using Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient showed a weak but significant positive correlation between all anthropometric measurements to BSV. Significant relationships existed between physiological variables of hand grip, back muscle strength, and backward overhead medicine ball throwing, but not the standing long jump and 30 m sprint. These data show that BSV is related to anthropometric and physiological variables, particularly upper and lower body strength and full-body explosive power. Based on the results of this study, we designed examples of sound training programs to increase BSV. Strength and conditioning coaches may want to consider using this information when designing a training program for collegiate baseball players.

Obesity is a global health problem. In developing countries such as Zimbabwe, obesity is both an emerging health problem and a grey area, particularly among adolescents. This study assessed the prevalence of obesity and factors associated with low obesity awareness among adolescents. Method: A cross-sectional survey was performed using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The participants were 423 adolescents aged 14–19 years recruited from 10 schools in Harare using a stratified random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 23) and binary logistics regression was used to examine the factors associated with low obesity awareness. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: The median± IQR age was 16 (14-18) years, and overweight and obesity affected 15.8% of the participants with higher proportions among girls (73.1%, p = 0.002). Low obesity awareness was observed in 27.1% of the adolescents with a higher proportion among girls (67.0%, p = 0.001), 14–16-year-olds (51.3%, p = 0.317), and obese adolescents (56.7%, p = 0.001). Significant factors associated with low obesity awareness were household heads lacking formal education [OR = 9.41 (2.20–40.36), p = 0.003] and inadequate (poor) food habits [OR = 2.58 (1.33–5.01), p = 0.005]. Conclusions: Our study showed that adolescents had different obesity awareness levels and diverse perceptions in terms of obesity causes, and a range of potential solutions. Obesity awareness and nutrition education should address adolescents’ poor eating habits while taking cognizance of the different education levels of household heads.

Parental practices influence intake of calcium-rich foods and beverages (CRFB) in adolescents. This study aimed to test two posters promoting such parental practices for comprehension, cultural and personal relevance, and ability to motivate parents to encourage CRFB intake. Interviews were conducted with 14 Hispanic and 6 Asian parents to evaluate two posters entitled “Good play starts with calcium” and “Strong families start with good nutrition.” Responses were reviewed for themes. For “Good play,” both racial/ethnic groups of parents understood the message to provide CRFB. Only Hispanics, however, recognized the connection between calcium and strong bones. For “Strong families,” both groups had difficulty understanding that foods pictured were calcium rich. Both posters were considered culturally and personally relevant; however, not all respondents indicated motivation to provide CRFB. Modifications are needed to emphasize the connection between images and taglines and calcium intake for use in a future intervention to improve CRFB-promoting practices.

To predict traumatic injuries using a computational model, accurate mechanical properties of biological materials are required. Especially, soft tissue is a viscoelastic and rate sensitive material that exhibits the decaying stress response when a constant displacement is applied. Thus, it is important to precisely formulate the phenomenon of a stress relaxation, which is readily applicable to computational models. In the current work, we newly developed an identification method of time constants and Young’s moduli for the stress relaxation response of biological soft tissues by assuming that soft tissues can be described by a generalized Maxwell model. Firstly, the decaying stress response was decomposed into a set of slow-to-fast stress components using a low-pass filter. Subsequently, we identified the time constants and Young’s moduli for slow and fast variations independently by solving the optimal problem, in which the correlation coefficient was maximized between each stress component and a corresponding normalized stress component. This method is computationally cost efficient and can semi-automatically determine the number of springs of Maxwell model. By applying the newly proposed method to the experimental data obtained for neural fiber bundles and skeletal muscle fiber bundles subjected to uniaxial stretching, we successfully demonstrated that the stress relaxation response can be well predicted for the mechanical change even in the short time range (0.1–1 s) in addition to the long time range (10–100 s).

How cancer cells engage the microenvironment to establish metastasis is poorly understood. Here, the authors show that CXCR3-expressing breast cancer cells secrete IL-1 to induce a paracrine crosstalk with fibroblasts in the lung, which involves CXCL9/10 production and results in colonization of the lung.

Abstract Background Echocardiography vector flow mapping can assess dynamic flow to treat congenital heart diseases. We evaluated intracardiac flow, energy loss, left ventricular output kinetic energy, and energetic performance index using vector flow mapping during Glenn and Damus-Kaye-Stansel procedures in order to assess the efficacy of the surgery. Case presentation A 9-month-old boy underwent Glenn and Damus-Kaye-Stansel procedures. The energy loss depends on the left ventricular preload; therefore, energy loss decreased after the Glenn procedure. After the Damus-Kaye-Stansel procedure, the kinetic energy would increase owing to the integrated systemic outflow; however, in our case, kinetic energy decreased, which was potentially explained by the fact that kinetic energy also depends on the left ventricular preload. After the Glenn and Damus-Kaye-Stansel procedures, we detected an improvement in energetic performance index, indicating that the cardiac workload improved as well. Conclusion We revealed the efficiency of the Glenn and Damus-Kaye-Stansel procedures using vector flow mapping.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways associated with excess production of Th2 cytokines and lung eosinophil accumulation. This inflammatory response persists in spite of steroid administration that blocks autocrine/paracrine loops of inflammatory cytokines, and the detailed mechanisms underlying asthma exacerbation remain unclear. Here, we show that asthma exacerbation is triggered by airway macrophages through a prion-like cell-to-cell transmission of extracellular particulates, including ASC protein, that assemble inflammasomes and mediate IL-1β production. OVA-induced allergic asthma and associated IL-1β production were alleviated in mice with small GTPase Arf6-deficient macrophages. The extracellular ASC specks were slightly engulfed by Arf6–/– macrophages, and the IL-1β production was reduced in Arf6–/– macrophages compared with that in WT macrophages. Furthermore, pharmacological inhibition of the Arf6 guanine nucleotide exchange factor suppressed asthma-like allergic inflammation in OVA-challenged WT mice. Collectively, the Arf6-dependent intercellular transmission of extracellular ASC specks contributes to the amplification of allergic inflammation and subsequent asthma exacerbation.

Efforts to provide nutrition support to para-athletes have not been established to date, and are far behind those established for athletes without disabilities. In the present study, we attempted to clarify the actual situation regarding dietary challenges of para-athletes. The aim of this study was to obtain clues to effective intervention methods that encourage the practice of sports nutrition. Six active elite para-athletes (30–70 years, four males) and a female physical therapist without physical disability participated in semi-structured interviews. All para-athletes had lower-limb disabilities and participated in the international wheelchair sports competitions (tennis, softball, and table tennis, with 2–26 years of player history). The interview items were on the ideal diet for improving competitive performance, evaluation of their typical diets, and the role of the dietitian as support. Responses obtained from participants were analyzed using quantitative content analysis by language analysis software. There are differences in the ideal diet based on the characteristics of the sport, but most participants believed that a nutritionally well-balanced diet with abundant vegetables was ideal for improving competitive performance. Para-athletes who use a wheelchair daily pay attention to their total calorie intake, because gaining weight is a critical issue for operating their wheelchairs and transferring themselves to and from their wheelchairs. Despite their world-class competition levels, none of them received routine dietary advice from dietitians. Some para-athletes did not even feel the need to engage with dietitians. Even for these para-athletes at a high level of competition, the “ideal diet” they considered was not always the optimal diet for improving their competitive performance. In addition, there are various barriers to practicing their optimal diet due to disability characteristics. Dietitians need to understand these barriers, their concerns and conflicts, and how to help them plan the optimal diet to improve their performance and maintain overall health.
