A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range $\sim$8 km to $\sim$190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 {\mu}bar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18$\pm$0.03 {\mu}bar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 {\mu}bar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. The candidate SX Phe star KIC 11754974 shows a remarkably high number of combination frequencies in the Fourier amplitude spectrum: 123 of the 166 frequencies in our multi-frequency fit are linear combinations of independent modes. Predictable patterns in frequency spacings are seen in the Fourier transform of the light curve. We present an analysis of 180 d of short-cadence Kepler photometry and of new spectroscopic data for this evolved, late A-type star. We infer from the 1150-d, long-cadence light curve, and in two different ways, that our target is the primary of a 343-d, non-eclipsing binary system. According to both methods, the mass function is similar, f(M)=0.0207 +/- 0.0003 Msun. The observed pulsations are modelled extensively, using separate, state-of-the-art, time-dependent convection (TDC) and rotating models. The models match the observed temperature and low metallicity, finding a mass of 1.50-1.56 Msun. The models suggest the whole star is metal-poor, and that the low metallicity is not just a surface abundance peculiarity. This is the best frequency analysis of an SX Phe star, and the only Kepler \delta\ Sct star to be modelled with both TDC and rotating models., Comment: 15 pages, 6 tables, 11 figures of which 7 are colour (suitable for greyscale printing). It is well known that asteroseismology is the unique technique permitting the study of the internal structure of pulsating stars using their pulsational frequencies, which is per se very important. It acquires an additional value when the star turns out to be a planet host. In this case, the asteroseismic study output may be a very important input for the study of the planetary system. With this in mind, we use the large time-span of the Kepler public data obtained for the star system HAT-P-7, first to perform an asteroseismic study of the pulsating star using Time-Dependent-Convection (TDC) models. KIC 3429637 (HD 178875) is a delta Sct star whose light-curve shows continuous pulsational amplitude growth in Kepler Mission photometry. Analysis of the three largest amplitude peaks in the Fourier transform indicates different growth rates for all three. We have ruled out instrumental causes, and determine the amplitude growth to be intrinsic to the star. We calculate time-dependent convection models and compare them with the observations. We confirm earlier characterisations that KIC 3429637 is a marginal Am star through the analysis of new spectroscopic data. With the data presently available, a plausible cause of the amplitude growth is increasing pulsational driving as evolutionary changes shift the He II driving zone deeper in this rho Puppis star. Adiabatic modeling of solar-like oscillations cannot exceed a certain level of precision for fitting individual frequencies. This is known as the problem of near surface effects on the mode physics. We present a theoretical study which addresses the problem of frequency precision in non-adiabatic models using a time-dependent convection treatment. We find that the number of acceptable model solutions is significantly reduced and more precise constraints can be imposed on the models. Results obtained for a specific star (beta Hydri) lead to very good agreement with both global and local seismic observables. This indicates that the accuracy of model fitting to seismic data is greatly improved when a more complete description of the interaction between convection and pulsation is taken into account., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Delta Scuti (delta Sct) stars are opacity-driven pulsators with masses of 1.5-2.5M$_{\odot}$, their pulsations resulting from the varying ionization of helium. In less massive stars such as the Sun, convection transports mass and energy through the outer 30 per cent of the star and excites a rich spectrum of resonant acoustic modes. Based on the solar example, with no firm theoretical basis, models predict that the convective envelope in delta Sct stars extends only about 1 per cent of the radius, but with sufficient energy to excite solar-like oscillations. This was not observed before the Kepler mission, so the presence of a convective envelope in the models has been questioned. Here we report the detection of solar-like oscillations in the delta Sct star HD 187547, implying that surface convection operates efficiently in stars about twice as massive as the Sun, as the ad hoc models predicted., Comment: to appear as a Letter to Nature

The Kepler spacecraft is providing time series of photometric data with micromagnitude precision for hundreds of A-F type stars. We present a first general characterization of the pulsational behaviour of A-F type stars as observed in the Kepler light curves of a sample of 750 candidate A-F type stars. We propose three main groups to describe the observed variety in pulsating A-F type stars: gamma Dor, delta Sct, and hybrid stars. We assign 63% of our sample to one of the three groups, and identify the remaining part as rotationally modulated/active stars, binaries, stars of different spectral type, or stars that show no clear periodic variability. 23% of the stars (171 stars) are hybrid stars, which is a much larger fraction than what has been observed before. We characterize for the first time a large number of A-F type stars (475 stars) in terms of number of detected frequencies, frequency range, and typical pulsation amplitudes. The majority of hybrid stars show frequencies with all kinds of periodicities within the gamma Dor and delta Sct range, also between 5 and 10 c/d, which is a challenge for the current models. We find indications for the existence of delta Sct and gamma Dor stars beyond the edges of the current observational instability strips. The hybrid stars occupy the entire region within the delta Sct and gamma Dor instability strips, and beyond. Non-variable stars seem to exist within the instability strips. The location of gamma Dor and delta Sct classes in the (Teff,logg)-diagram has been extended. We investigate two newly constructed variables 'efficiency' and 'energy' as a means to explore the relation between gamma Dor and delta Sct stars. Context. gamma Doradus (gamma Dor) are late A and F-type stars pulsating with high order gravity modes (g-modes). The existence of different evolutionary phases crossing the gamma Dor instability strip raises the question of the existence of pre-main sequence (PMS) gamma Dor stars. Aims. We intend to study the differences between the asteroseismic behaviour of PMS and main sequence (MS) gamma Dor pulsators as it is predicted by the current theory of stellar evolution and stability. Methods. We explore the adiabatic and non-adiabatic properties of high order g-modes in a grid of PMS and MS models covering the mass range 1.2 Msun < Mstar < 2.5 Msun. Results. We derive the theoretical instability strip (IS) for the PMS gamma Dor pulsators. This IS covers the same effective temperature range as the MS gamma Dor one. Nevertheless, the frequency domain of unstable modes in PMS models with a fully radiative core is larger than in MS models, even if they present the same number of unstable modes. Moreover, the differences between MS and PMS internal structures are reflected on the average values of the period spacing as well as on the dependence of the period spacing on the radial order of the modes, opening the window to the determination of the evolutionary phase of gamma Dor stars from their pulsation spectra., Comment: 9 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report spectroscopic observations for 19 $\delta$\,Sct candidates observed by the {\it Kepler} satellite both in long and short cadence mode. For all these stars, by using spectral synthesis, we derive the effective temperature, the surface gravity and the projected rotational velocity. An equivalent spectral type classification has been also performed for all stars in the sample. These determinations are fundamental for modelling the frequency spectra that will be extracted from the {\it Kepler} data for asteroseismic inference. For all the 19 stars, we present also periodograms obtained from {\it Kepler} data. We find that all stars show peaks in both low- ($\gamma$\,Dor; g mode) and high-frequency ($\delta$\,Sct; p mode) regions. Using the amplitudes and considering 5\,c/d as a boundary frequency, we classified 3 stars as pure $\gamma$\,Dor, 4 as $\gamma$\,Dor\,-\,$\delta$\ hybrid, Sct, 5 as $\delta$\,Sct\,-\,$\gamma$\,Dor hybrid, and 6 as pure $\delta$\,Sct. The question of the existence of pre-main sequence (PMS) $\gamma$~Doradus ($\gamma$~Dor) has been raised by the observations of young clusters such as NGC~884 hosting $\gamma$~Dor members. We have explored the properties of $\gamma$~Dor type pulsations in a grid of PMS models covering the mass range $1.2 M_\odot < M_* < 2.5 M_\odot$ and we derive the theoretical instability strip (IS) for the PMS $\gamma$~Dor pulsators. The present work performs an asteroseismic study of a gamma Doradus star member of the open cluster NGC 2506. This work conjugates the observational information of the star and the strong constraints imposed by the cluster membership, with the latest developed theoretical asteroseismic tools for the modelling of this type of objects, in particular the Frequency Ratio Method (FRM) and Time-Dependent Convection (TDC), to study the gamma Dor stars found in the NGC 2506 stellar cluster. The use of both techniques gives us the opportunity of constructing a self-consistent procedure, allowing the mode identification and improving the modelling of the gamma Dor members of the cluster. In this work we present the result of the analysis of the first target of our project, showing the advantadge of modelling cluster member's gamma Dor stars. This is the first step in a more ambitious project. In the near future, we plan to expand the study to other variable members of the NGC 2506 cluster. We present the ground-based activities within the different working groups of the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium (KASC). The activities aim at the systematic characterization of the 5000+ KASC targets, and at the collection of ground-based follow-up time-series data of selected promising Kepler pulsators. So far, 36 different instruments at 31 telescopes on 23 different observatories in 12 countries are in use, and a total of more than 530 observing nights has been awarded. (Based on observations made with the Isaac Newton Telescope, William Herschel Telescope, Nordic Optical Telescope, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, Mercator Telescope (La Palma, Spain), and IAC-80 (Tenerife, Spain). The primary target in the seismo-field of CoRoT, HD 49434, known to be a bona fide hybrid gamma Doradus/delta Scuti, shows excited intermediate-order g modes. Time-Dependent Convection models, however, predict a range in frequency that is stable to pulsations, between the simultaneously excited high-order g modes (gamma Dor) and low-order p and g modes (delta Sct). Furthermore, theoretical studies based on model computations of delta Sct stars suggest that stochastically excited modes are likely to be observed. A pertinent question would then be to ask: Might those observed intermediate-order g modes be stochastically excited? By employing a statistical method which searches for the signature of stochastic excitation in stellar pulsations, we investigate the nature of those modes with possible implications on the identification of their excitation mechanism. Preliminary results are rather inconclusive about the presence of stochastic excitation. Observations of the pulsations of stars can be used to infer their interior structure and test theoretical models. The main sequence $\gamma$ Doradus (Dor) and $\delta$ Scuti (Sct) stars with masses 1.2-2.5 $M_{\sun}$ are particularly useful for these studies. The $\gamma$ Dor stars pulsate in high-order $g$ modes with periods of order 1 day, driven by convective blocking at the base of their envelope convection zone. The $\delta$ Sct stars pulsate in low-order $g$ and $p$ modes with periods of order 2 hours, driven by the $\kappa$ mechanism operating in the Heii ionization zone. Theory predicts an overlap region in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram between instability regions, where 'hybrid' stars pulsating in both types of modes should exist. The two types of modes with properties governed by different portions of the stellar interior provide complementary model constraints. Among the known $\gamma$ Dor and $\delta$ Sct stars, only four have been confirmed as hybrids. Now, analysis of combined Quarter 0 and Quarter 1 Kepler data for hundreds of variable stars shows that the frequency spectra are so rich that there are practically no pure $\delta$ Sct or $\gamma$ Dor pulsators, i.e. essentially all of the stars show frequencies in both the $\delta$ Sct and $\gamma$ Dor frequency range. A new observational classification scheme is proposed that takes into account the amplitude as well as the frequency, and is applied to categorize 234 stars as $\delta$ Sct, $\gamma$ Dor, $\delta$ Sct/$\gamma$ Dor or $\gamma$ Dor/$\delta$ Sct hybrids., Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures and 1 table - submitted to ApJL

Gamma Doradus are F-type stars pulsating with high order g-modes. Their instability strip (IS) overlaps the red edge of the delta Scuti one. This observation has led to search for objects in this region of the HR diagram showing p and g-modes simultaneously. The existence of such hybrid pulsators has recently been confirmed (Handler 2009) and the number of candidates is increasing (Matthews 2007). From a theoretical point of view, non-adiabatic computations including a time-dependent treatment of convection (TDC) predict the existence of gamma Dor/delta Sct hybrid pulsators (Dupret et al. 2004; Grigahcene et al. 2006). We study the energetic aspects of hybrid pressure-gravity modes pulsations. The case of hybrid beta Cephei-SPB pulsators is considered with special attention. In addition to the already known sensitivity of the driving mechanism to the heavy elements mixture (mainly the iron abundance), we show that the characteristics of the propagation and evanescent regions play also a major role, determining the extension of the stable gap in the frequency domain between the unstable low order pressure and high order gravity modes. Solar-like oscillations have been observed in numerous red giants from ground and from space. An important question arises: could we expect to detect non-radial modes probing the internal structure of these stars? We investigate under what physical circumstances non-radial modes could be observable in red giants; what would be their amplitudes, lifetimes and heights in the power spectrum (PS)? Using a non-radial non-adiabatic pulsation code including a non-local time-dependent treatment of convection, we compute the theoretical lifetimes of radial and non-radial modes in several red giant models. Next, using a stochastic excitation model, we compute the amplitudes of these modes and their heights in the PS. This is the first step in a project to combine studies of eclipsing binaries and oscillating stars to probe the interior of Blue Stragglers (BS). This may imply a way to discriminate observationally between different birth mechanisms of BS stars. We study the open cluster NGC2506 which contains oscillating BS stars and detached eclipsing binaries for which accurate parameters can be derived. This will tightly constrain the cluster isochrone and provide an absolute mass, radius and luminosity-scale for the cluster stars along with the cluster age, metallicity and distance. The present work focuses on obtaining the light curves of the binaries and determine their orbital periods, on obtaining power spectra of the oscillating BS stars to select targets for follow-up studies, and on searching for gamma Doradus type variables which are also expected to be present in the cluster. With a two-colour, dual-site photometric campaign we obtained 3120 CCD-images of NGC2506 spread over four months. We analysed the BI time-series of the oscillating stars and used simulations to derive statistical uncertainties of the resulting frequencies, amplitudes and phases. A preliminary mode-identification was performed using frequency ratios for the oscillating BS stars, and amplitude ratios and phase differences for a population of newly detected gamma Doradus stars. We quadrupled the number of known variables in NGC2506 by discovering 3 new oscillating BS stars, 15 gamma Doradus stars and four new eclipsing binaries. The orbital periods of 2 known, detached eclipsing binaries were derived. We discovered a BS star with both p-mode and g-mode variability and we confronted our gamma Doradus observations with state-of-the-art seismic models, but found significant discrepancy between theory and observations., Comment: 17 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

gamma Dor-type oscillations have been discovered in the star HD218427 through simultaneous uvby photometric observations carried out in the year 2003. A few Hbeta-Crawford measurements were also collected for calibration purposes which place this star well-located inside the gamma Dor instability region. Deficiency in metal content, similar to other well-defined gamma Dor stars, is found in HD218427 and the possibility of a lambda Boo nature is discussed. Frequency analysis was carried out for different filters, the combined "vby" filter was also used and five frequencies were found as significant with periods ranging between 0.3 and 0.8 days. The recently developed Frequency Ratio Method is used in order to perform an identification of the excited modes. The results are consistent with an l=2 identification for all the modes and high radial quantum numbers (n~40) for the three main observed periodicities. The possibility of multiplet structures is also discussed. However, no consistency is found when the Time-Dependent Convection treatment is used for modes discrimination. The disagreement can be due to the large rotation velocity taking place in HD218427 and, consequently, the significant coupling between the modes., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Accepted by A&A

We report on observational results obtained for 78 objects originally classified as bona-fide or candidate gamma Doradus stars. For the southern objects, we gathered echelle spectra with the CORALIE spectrograph attached to the Euler telescope in 1998-2003 and/or Johnson-Cousins B,V,Ic observations with the MODULAR photometer attached to the 0.5-m SAAO telescope in 1999-2000. For the northern objects, we obtained Geneva U,B,B1,B2,V,V1,G observations with the P7 photometer attached to the 1.2-m MERCATOR telescope in 2001-2004. At least 15 of our objects are binaries, of which 7 are new. For 6 binaries, we determined the orbit for the first time. At least 17 objects show profile variations and at least 12 objects are multiperiodic photometric variables. Our results allow us to upgrade 11 objects to bona-fide gamma Doradus stars and to downgrade 8 objects to constant up to the current detection limits. The effect of rotation on the Frequency Ratio Method (Moya et al. 2005) is examined. Its applicability to observed frequencies of rotating gamma Doradus stars is discussed taking into account the following aspects: the use of a perturbative approach to compute adiabatic oscillation frequencies; the effect of rotation on the observational Brunt-Vaisala integral determination and finally, the problem of disentangling multiplet-like structures from frequency patterns due to the period spacing expected for high-order gravity modes in asymptotic regime. This analysis reveals that the FRM produces reliable results for objects with rotational velocities up to 70 kms/s, for which the FRM intrinsic error increases one order of magnitude with respect to the typical FRM errors given in Moya et al. (2005). Our computations suggest that, given the spherical degree "l" identification, the FRM may be discriminating for m = 0 modes, in the sense that the method avoids any misinterpretation induced by the presence of rotationally split multiplet-like structures, which reinforces the robustness of the method. However, if "l" is unknown, such discrimination is not ensured.
