Abstract

The difficulty to estimate the mechanical properties of the tympanic membrane (TM) is a limitation to understand the sound transmission mechanism. In this paper, based on finite element calculations, the sensitivity of the human hearing system to these properties is evaluated. The parameters that define the bending stiffness properties of the membrane have been studied, specifically two key parameters: Young’s modulus of the tympanic membrane and the thickness of the eardrum. Additionally, it has been completed with the evaluation of the presence of an initial prestrain inside the TM. Modal analysis is used to study the qualitative characteristics of the TM comparing with vibration patterns obtained by holography. Higher-order modes are shown as a tool to identify these properties. The results show that different combinations of elastic properties and prestrain provide similar responses. The presence of prestrain at the membrane adds more uncertainty, and it is pointed out as a source for the lack of agreement of some previous TM elastic modulus estimations.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Ectopic pregnancy is an emergency frequently requiring laparoscopic intervention. This study aimed to determine whether single-incision laparoscopic surgery is a safe and effective treatment method compared with conventional laparoscopic surgery with multiple ports. DATA SOURCES: This study searched 6 databases from their inception to May 15, 2024, for articles comparing the safety outcomes of single-incision laparoscopic surgery with conventional laparoscopic surgery in managing women with ectopic pregnancy. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: This study included all studies that evaluated the safety outcomes of single-incision laparoscopic surgery compared with conventional laparoscopic surgery in patients with ectopic pregnancy and included at least 1 of our preselected outcomes. In addition, this study included both randomized controlled trials and observational studies. METHODS: Review Manager (version 5.4.1) and OpenMetaAnalyst software were used to analyze the extracted data. In addition, this study used odds ratios for dichotomous outcomes, mean difference for continuous outcomes, a fixed effects model for homogeneous outcomes, and a random effects model for heterogeneous outcomes. Furthermore, heterogeneity was evaluated using the I2 and P values. After removing duplicates, this study identified 83 studies. Using a 2-step screening process, this study excluded non-English and animal studies and included randomized controlled trials and observational studies that included at least 1 of our preselected outcomes. Ultimately, 12 studies were included in the final synthesis. 14. Amor y Apoyo: Lecciones de Latinx Families in Nourishing Resilience to First and Second-Generation College Students

Abstract

The present qualitative study aims to understand how Latino/Hispanic herea er referred to as Latinx, parent involvement is different or similar among first- and second-generation college students in how they experience higher education and how parental education impacts the use of student support services. Hence, supporting Latinx student retention by developing university and parental relationships. Second-generation college students and Latinx parents were unable to be included in the study because of their scarcity or hesitation of participating. Therefore, participants included a convenience sample of six first-generation undergraduate students from a 4-year institution. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain their stories of parental involvement and student involvement. Results suggest that (1) first-generation college students experience a hands-off involvement from parents, however, they enjoyed the freedom this brought, (2) Latinx parents might have a misunderstanding of college student identity, and (3) students expressed a desire to have their parents learn about and understand mental health. Implications of findings include universities creating more resources to support Latinx students’ mental health, as well as earlier school outreach for Latinx parent involvement to better inform them about the college lifestyle.

Abstract

This study presents a detailed analysis of a fatigue test campaign in order to identify different crack patterns. It was conducted on 6061-T6 aluminum tubular specimens featuring an internal diameter of 10 mm and different thicknesses (2, 3 and 4 mm). These specimens were subjected to cyclic tensile loads with a load ratio of R = 0.1, utilizing a sinusoidal load function at a frequency of 3 Hz. The investigation examines the crack growth rates, the stress intensity factor, and the final and intermediate fracture zones by applying overloads in some cases. The differences with two-dimensional specimens and the importance of this study for the interpretation of results with biaxial loading states are highlighted. The different states of crack growth detected are analyzed using artificial vision techniques. The differences between the exterior and interior faces of the specimen are revealed, and a series of states prior to the formation of the radial crack front expected in these specimens are identified. Abstract

Introducción: el interés de la visualización sonográfica del timo fetal está relacionado con su importante función inmunológica, las posibilidades de diagnóstico que ofrecen los ecógrafos de alta resolución, y el incremento de informes de posibles afecciones durante el proceso de la gestación.Objetivo: determinar la frecuencia de la hipoplasia tímica fetal en gestantes de riesgo genético y relacionarla con la presencia de defectos fetales, factores de riesgo previos y aparición de efectos obstétricos adversos.Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo prospectivo consistente en la evaluación ecográfica del timo fetal mediante el índice timo-tórax a 221 gestantes que acudieron a los servicios de referencia del Centro Provincial de Genética Médica, por presentar riesgo genético incrementado para cardiopatías. Resultados: se encontraron 16 fetos con un índice timo-tórax inferior o igual a 0,30, el cual se utilizó como criterio de hipoplasia tímica en este estudio, entre ellos: 4 con cardiopatías, 4 con cromosomopatías, 1 con malformación estructural aislada, 2 con preeclampsia, 1 con crecimiento intrauterino retardado, 1 pretérmino y una muerte fetal. Los motivos de referencia con mayor proporción de positividad fueron: la traslucencia nucal aumentada y la imagen de sospecha de cardiopatía congénita en ultrasonido de pesquisaje.Conclusiones: la determinación del índice timo-tórax permitió el diagnóstico de la hipoplasia tímica, tanto en el segundo como en el tercer trimestre de la gestación. Este tipo de investigación es relevante pues contribuye a identificar: defectos congénitos, factores de riesgo y efectos obstétricos adversos.

Abstract

Minimally Invasive Procedures (MIPs) emerged as an alternative to more invasive surgical approaches, offering patient benefits such as smaller incisions, less pain, and shorter hospital stay. In one class of MIPs, where natural body lumens or small incisions are used to access deeper anatomical locations, Flexible Surgical and Interventional Robots (FSIRs) such as catheters and endoscopes are widely used. Due to their flexible and compliant nature, FSIRs can be inserted via natural orifices or small incisions, then moved towards hard-to-reach targets to perform interventional tasks. However, existing FSIRs are confronted with challenges in sensing, control, and navigation. These issues stem from the robot’s non-linear behavior and the intricate nature of the lumens, where accurately modeling the complex interactions and disturbances proves to be exceptionally difficult. The rapid advances in Machine Learning (ML) have facilitated the widespread adoption of ML techniques in FSIRs. This article provides an overview of these efforts by first introducing a classification of existing ML algorithms, including traditional ML methods and modern Deep Learning (DL) approaches, commonly used in FSIRs. Next, the use of ML algorithms is surveyed per sub-domain, namely for perception, modeling, control, and navigation. Trends, popularity, strengths, and/or limitations of different ML algorithms are analyzed. The different roles that ML plays among tasks are investigated and described.
