Quantum error correction (QEC) will be essential to achieve the accuracy needed for quantum computers to realise their full potential. The field has seen promising progress with demonstrations of early QEC and real-time decoded experiments. As quantum computers advance towards demonstrating a universal fault-tolerant logical gate set, implementing scalable and low-latency real-time decoding will be crucial to prevent the backlog problem, avoiding an exponential slowdown and maintaining a fast logical clock rate. Here, we demonstrate low-latency feedback with a scalable FPGA decoder integrated into the control system of a superconducting quantum processor. We perform an 8-qubit stability experiment with up to $25$ decoding rounds and a mean decoding time per round below $1$ ${\mu}s$, showing that we avoid the backlog problem even on superconducting hardware with the strictest speed requirements. We observe logical error suppression as the number of decoding rounds is increased. We also implement and time a fast-feedback experiment demonstrating a decoding response time of $9.6$ ${\mu}s$ for a total of $9$ measurement rounds. Multimodal image-text contrastive learning has shown that joint representations can be learned across modalities. Here, we show how leveraging multiple views of image data with contrastive learning can improve downstream fine-grained classification performance for species recognition, even when one view is absent. We propose ContRastive Image-remote Sensing Pre-training (CRISP)$\unicode{x2014}$a new pre-training task for ground-level and aerial image representation learning of the natural world$\unicode{x2014}$and introduce Nature Multi-View (NMV), a dataset of natural world imagery including $>3$ million ground-level and aerial image pairs for over 6,000 plant taxa across the ecologically diverse state of California. The Beryllium Electron capture in Superconducting Tunnel junctions (BeEST) experiment searches for evidence of heavy neutrino mass eigenstates in the nuclear electron capture decay of $^7$Be by precisely measuring the recoil energy of the $^7$Li daughter. In Phase-III, the BeEST experiment has been scaled from a single superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) sensor to a 36-pixel array to increase sensitivity and mitigate gamma-induced backgrounds. Phase-III also uses a new continuous data acquisition system that greatly increases the flexibility for signal processing and data cleaning. We have developed procedures for signal processing and spectral fitting that are sufficiently robust to be automated for large data sets. This article presents the optimized procedures before unblinding the majority of the Phase-III data set to search for physics beyond the standard model.

In this article, we present our recent experiments on fission fragment rocket propulsion, and on an innovative new design for an alpha particle detection system that has been inspired by these rocketry results. Our test platform, which operates within high magnetic fields 3 T over a large cross$\unicode{x2013}$section (approximately 40 cm in diameter), has been used as a test platform to evaluate the containment and thrust within a future fission$\unicode{x2013}$fragment rocket engine (FFRE). This much more efficient nuclear rocket propulsion FFRE design was first proposed in the 1980s with the intent of greatly reducing transit times in long$\unicode{x2013}$duration space travel. Our objective is to enhance the operational efficiency of this nuclear rocket while gaining deeper insights into the behavior of fuel particles and of the fission$\unicode{x2013}$fragment ejecta within strong magnetic fields experimentally. Through a combination of simulations and experimental work, we established a method for the production and detection of alpha particles as a surrogate for fission fragments. To achieve this, we employed Americium$\unicode{x2013}$241 ($^{ 241}$Am) sources, which were situated within a cylindrical vacuum chamber positioned in a 3$\unicode{x2013}$T Siemens MRI superconducting magnet. By simulating, measuring, and analyzing the emitted alpha particle flux, we gained valuable information about the distribution and likelihood of escape of fission fragments in a future FFRE design. This approach could potentially achieve both high specific impulse and power density in advanced nuclear propulsion systems, such as the FFRE. We show that Iacob-Iyengar's answer to a question of Avromov-Foxby extends from Noetherian to coherent rings. In particular, a coherent ring R is regular if and only if the injective (resp. projective) dimension of each complex X of R-modules agrees with its graded-injective (resp. graded-projective) dimension. The same is shown for the analogous dimensions based on FP-injective R-modules, and on flat R-modules.

We prove that the symmetric function $\Delta'_{e_{k-1}}e_n$ appearing in the Delta Conjecture can be obtained from the symmetric function in the Rational Shuffle Theorem by applying a Schur skewing operator. This generalizes a formula by the first and third authors for the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$, and follows from work of Blasiak, Haiman, Morse, Pun, and Seelinger. Our main result is that we also provide a purely combinatorial proof of this skewing identity, giving a new proof of the Rise Delta Theorem from the Rational Shuffle Theorem.

The region of $N\approx Z\approx 40$ has long been associated with strongly deformed nuclear configurations. The presence of this strong deformation was recently confirmed through lifetime measurements in $N\approx Z$ Sr and Zr nuclei. Theoretically, however, these nuclei present a challenge due to the vast valence space required to incorporate all deformation driving interactions. Recent state-of-the-art predictions indicate a near axial prolate deformation for $N=Z$ and $N=Z+2$ nuclei between $N=Z=36$ and $N=Z=40$. In this work we investigate the shores of this island of deformation through a sub-barrier Coulomb excitation study of the $N=Z+4$ nucleus, \textsuperscript{80}Sr. Extracting a spectroscopic quadrupole moment of $Q_s(2^+_1) = 0.45^{+0.83}_{-0.88}$~eb, we find that \textsuperscript{80}Sr is inconsistent with significant axial prolate deformation. This indicates that the predicted region of strong prolate deformation around $N=Z=40$ is tightly constrained to the quartet of nuclei: \textsuperscript{76,78}Sr and \textsuperscript{78,80}Zr., Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B

In this study, we propose the use of virtual urban field studies (VUFS) through context-based interface prototypes for evaluating the interaction design of auditory interfaces. Virtual field tests use mixed-reality technologies to combine the fidelity of real-world testing with the affordability and speed of testing in the lab. In this paper, we apply this concept to rapidly test sound designs for autonomous vehicle (AV)--pedestrian interaction with a high degree of realism and fidelity. We also propose the use of psychometrically validated measures of presence in validating the verisimilitude of VUFS. Using mixed qualitative and quantitative methods, we analysed users' perceptions of presence in our VUFS prototype and the relationship to our prototype's effectiveness. We also examined the use of higher-order ambisonic spatialised audio and its impact on presence. Our results provide insights into how VUFS can be designed to facilitate presence as well as design guidelines for how this can be leveraged.

We present a new method of establishing a bijective correspondence - in fact, a lattice isomorphism - between action- and coaction-invariant ideals of C*-algebras and their crossed products by a fixed locally compact group. Due to their tunable material properties, sorptive materials have a wide range of applications in energy storage, water treatment, carbon capture, analytical chemistry, and more. One crucial factor in determining the effectiveness of such materials is their skeletal density, or "true density" because it is often used to calculate key metrics, such as storage capacities. In this paper, we present skeletal density measurements through helium pycnometry for several types of adsorbent carbon materials derived from either corncob, sawdust, coffee grounds, polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), graphitic carbon nitride (GCN), or metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The measured skeletal density of sawdust-based activated carbon was 2.02 +/- 0.05 g/$cm^{ 3}$. The measured skeletal density of coffee-based activated carbon was 2.23 +/- 0.06 $cm^{ 3}$. We also expound upon the impact that skeletal density has upon hydrogen excess adsorption measurements and other calculated engineering quantities. If a skeletal density is underestimated by 10%, it can affect the room temperature excess adsorption by at least 5% at 100 bar and by 7% at 200 bar, depending on the material type., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Epidemics are inherently stochastic, and stochastic models provide an appropriate way to describe and analyse such phenomena. Given temporal incidence data consisting of, for example, the number of new infections or removals in a given time window, a continuous-time discrete-valued Markov process provides a natural description of the dynamics of each model component, typically taken to be the number of susceptible, exposed, infected or removed individuals. Fitting the SEIR model to time-course data is a challenging problem due incomplete observations and, consequently, the intractability of the observed data likelihood. Whilst sampling based inference schemes such as Markov chain Monte Carlo are routinely applied, their computational cost typically restricts analysis to data sets of no more than a few thousand infective cases. Instead, we develop a sequential inference scheme that makes use of a computationally cheap approximation of the most natural Markov process model. Crucially, the resulting model allows a tractable conditional parameter posterior which can be summarised in terms of a set of low dimensional statistics. This is used to rejuvenate parameter samples in conjunction with a novel bridge construct for propagating state trajectories conditional on the next observation of cumulative incidence. This versatility is achieved through the use of custom tools and appliances operated by a dual arm manipulator utilizing proprioceptive actuators. The use of proprioceptive actuators enables fast yet precise movements, while allowing for accurate force control and effectively mitigating the inevitable impacts encountered in cooking. Liquids and granular media are pervasive throughout human environments, yet remain particularly challenging for robots to sense and manipulate precisely. In this work, we present a systematic approach at integrating capacitive sensing within robotic end effectors to enable robust sensing and precise manipulation of liquids and granular media. We introduce the parallel-jaw RoboCAP Gripper with embedded capacitive sensing arrays that enable a robot to directly sense the materials and dynamics of liquids inside of diverse containers, including some visually opaque. When coupled with model-based control, we demonstrate that the proposed system enables a robotic manipulator to achieve state-of-the-art precision pouring accuracy for a range of substances with varying dynamics properties. Smartphone users install numerous mobile apps that require access to different information from their devices. Much of this information is very sensitive, and users often struggle to manage these accesses due to their lack of tech expertise and knowledge regarding mobile privacy. Thus, they often seek help from others to make decisions regarding their mobile privacy and security. We embedded these social processes in a mobile app titled "CO-oPS'' ("Community Oversight for Privacy and Security"). CO-oPS allows trusted community members to review one another's apps installed and permissions granted to those apps. Community members can provide feedback to one another regarding their privacy behaviors. Users are also allowed to hide some of their mobile apps that they do not like others to see, ensuring their personal privacy.

Despite their high relative abundance in our Universe, neutrinos are the least understood fundamental particles of nature. They also provide a unique system to study quantum coherence and the wavelike nature of particles in fundamental systems due to their extremely weak interaction probabilities. In fact, the quantum properties of neutrinos emitted in experimentally relevant sources are virtually unknown and the spatial extent of the neutrino wavepacket is only loosely constrained by reactor neutrino oscillation data with a spread of 13 orders of magnitude. Here, we present the first direct limits of this quantity through a new experimental concept to extract the energy width, $\sigma_{\textrm{N},E}$, of the recoil daughter nucleus emitted in the nuclear electron capture (EC) decay of $^7$Be. The final state in the EC decay process contains a recoiling $^7$Li nucleus and an electron neutrino ($\nu_e$) which are entangled at their creation. The $^7$Li energy spectrum is measured to high precision by directly embedding $^7$Be radioisotopes into a high resolution superconducting tunnel junction that is operated as a cryogenic sensor. The lower limit on the spatial uncertainty of the recoil daughter was found to be $\sigma_{\textrm{N}, x} \geq 6.2$\,pm, which implies the final-state system is localized at a scale more than a thousand times larger than the nucleus itself. From this measurement, the first direct lower limits on the spatial extent of the neutrino wavepacket were extracted using two different theoretical methods. The intimate correlation between the local atomic arrangement and electronic states in Li-ion battery cathode materials plays a crucial role in determining their electrochemical properties, including capacity, cycling stability, and rate capability. Despite almost 30 years of research efforts on high performance cathodes based on Ni rich layered oxides, there is still no consensus on LiNiO2 local atomic and electronic structure. Ni sites could be either Jahn-Teller distorted or bond disproportionated and the role of Ni and oxygen in the charge compensation mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we compare the local and electronic structure of LiNiO2 and NaNiO2, a long-range Jahn-Teller system, using a novel approach which aims at correlating the results from bulk spectroscopy techniques, particularly under operando conditions, obtained on standard samples to ensure sample interoperability and enhance the reliability and robustness of our results. Despite being a site-selective and local technique, XAS is unable to discriminate between the proposed scenarios, as confirmed also by theoretical calculations. On the contrary, Raman spectroscopy show local structural differences between monoclinic distorted NaNiO2 and rhombohedral LiNiO2. Additionally, HAXPES confirms the presence of multiple formal oxidation states for Ni, and RIXS data provides evidence of 3d8 states, confirming the negative charge transfer character of Ni and some degree of bond disproportionation in LiNiO2. Regarding the charge compensation mechanism, XRS and RIXS support the participation of oxygen holes in the redox activity, while Raman spectroscopy does not detect molecular oxygen. By combing several high-fidelity spectroscopy datasets, this study shows the value of correlative characterization workflows to provide insights into complex structural-electrochemical relationships.

Materials used to study nuclear fusion can retain atmospheric helium unless pretreated before an experiment. Understanding helium outgassing is important for accurate diagnostics in experiments surrounding nuclear fusion. The presence of helium is often cited as the primary evidence that a nuclear reaction has occurred, so it is imperative that known sources of helium are mitigated prior to proceeding with novel nuclear experiments. It is also necessary to ensure hermiticity when transferring gas aliquots from an experiment to a mass spectrometer. In this article, we present studies of detecting helium leak rates in systems used in novel nuclear experiments. We also present studies of helium retention in materials subjected to various heating profiles and atmospheric concentrations. Without pretreatment, stainless-steel 316 retains between 15 $\unicode{x2013}$ 240 pmol of $^{ 4}$He or an areal outgassing amount of 0.07 $\unicode{x2013}$ 1.20 pmol/$cm^{ 2}$. It also may reabsorb $^{ 4}$He from the atmosphere in time. These studies also demonstrate that it is necessary to pretreat most materials prior to performing experiments where the presence of $^{ 4}$He is being used as an indicator for novel nuclear reactions., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables

A human operator using a manual control interface has ready access to their own command signal, both by efference copy and proprioception. In contrast, a human supervisor typically relies on visual information alone. We propose supplying a supervisor with a copy of the operators command signal, hypothesizing improved performance, especially when that copy is provided through haptic display. We experimentally compared haptic with visual access to the command signal, quantifying the performance of N equals 10 participants attempting to determine which of three reference signals was being tracked by an operator. Results indicate an improved accuracy in identifying the tracked target when haptic display was available relative to visual display alone. We introduce higher Specht polynomials - analogs of Specht polynomials in higher degrees - in two sets of variables $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ and $y_1,\ldots,y_n$ under the diagonal action of the symmetric group $S_n$. This generalizes the classical Specht polynomial construction in one set of variables, as well as the higher Specht basis for the coinvariant ring $R_n$ due to Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada, which has the advantage of respecting the decomposition into irreducibles. As our main application of the general theory, we provide a higher Specht basis for the hook shape Garsia--Haiman modules. In the process, we obtain a new formula for their doubly graded Frobenius series in terms of new generalized cocharge statistics on tableaux.

Emerging studies are geared toward exploring new methods of nuclear rocket propulsion to provide more efficient space transit beyond Earth's orbit. One method is to employ a Fission Fragment Rocket Engine utilizing fissionable layers embedded in a low-density aerogel. A quantitative understanding of particle attenuation is essential for developing a functional prototype that permits fission fragments to escape the layers and contribute to specific impulse rather than being attenuated and generating waste heat. In this investigation, the MCNP code was used to theoretically analyze the attenuation of alpha particles from Am-241 sources within aerogel materials. Simulations were conducted on aerogels with various densities and compositions. These simulations aimed to predict the expected intensity of alpha particles reaching a detector. CR-39 was employed as a Plastic Nuclear Track Detector to assess particle attenuation by the aerogels. The threshold areal density of atoms was found to be around $10^{ 20}$ atoms/$cm^{ 2}$ for the three materials studied in this project. Using a 0.22 mm thick SiO$_2$ aerogel with a density of 90 mg/$cm^{ 3}$, which exceeds the threshold, nearly all alpha particles were attenuated. Conversely, employing a 1.6 mm thick graphene aerogel with a density of 12.5 mg/$cm^{ 3}$ resulted in an average attenuation of 32.3%., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

The cross-shell excited states of $^{34}$Si have been investigated via $\beta$-decays of the $4^-$ ground state and the $1^+$ isomeric state of $^{34}$Al. Since the valence protons and valence neutrons occupy different major shells in the ground state as well as the intruder $1^+$ isomeric state of $^{34}$Al, intruder levels of $^{34}$Si are populated via allowed $\beta$ decays. Spin assignments to such intruder levels of $^{34}$Si were established through $\gamma$-$\gamma$ angular correlation analysis for the negative parity states with dominant configurations $(\nu d_{3/2})^{-1} \otimes (\nu f_{7/2})^{1}$ as well as the positive parity states with dominant configurations $(\nu sd)^{-2} \otimes (\nu f_{7/2}p_{3/2})^2$. The configurations of such intruder states play crucial roles in our understanding of the $N=20$ shell gap evolution. A configuration interaction model derived from the FSU Hamiltonian was utilized in order to interpret the intruder states in $^{34}$Si. Shell model interaction derived from a more fundamental theory with the Valence Space In Medium Similarity Renormalization Group (VS-IMSRG) method was also employed to interpret the structure of $^{34}$Si.

In this note, we give a simple closed formula for an arbitrary product, landing in dimension 0, of boundary classes on the Deligne--Mumford moduli space M_0,n-bar. For any such boundary strata $X_{T_1}, \ldots, X_{T_\ell}$, we show the intersection product $\int \prod_{i=1}^\ell [X_{T_i}]$ is either a signed product of multinomial coefficients, or zero, and provide a simple criterion for determining when it is nonzero. We do not claim originality for our product formula, but to our knowledge it does not appear elsewhere in the literature.
