Abstract

FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$(FTS) occupies a special spot in modern condensed matter physics at the intersections of electron correlation, topology, and unconventional superconductivity. The bulk electronic structure of FTS is predicted to be topologically nontrivial thanks to the band inversion between the $d_{xz}$ and $p_z$ bands along $\Gamma$-$Z$. However, there remain debates in both the authenticity of the Dirac surface states (DSS) and the experimental deviations of band structure from the theoretical band inversion picture. Here we resolve these debates through a comprehensive ARPES investigation. We first observe a persistent DSS independent of $k_z$. Then, by comparing FTS with FeSe which has no band inversion along $\Gamma$-$Z$, we identify the spectral weight fingerprint of both the presence of the $p_z$ band and the inversion between the $d_{xz}$ and $p_z$ bands. Furthermore, we propose a reconciling band structure under the framework of a tight-binding model preserving crystal symmetry. Our results highlight the significant influence of correlation on modifying the band structure and make a strong case for the existence of topological band structure in this unconventional superconductor.

Abstract

Axion insulators are 3D magnetic higher-order topological insulators protected by inversion-symmetry that exhibit hinge-localized chiral channels and induce quantized topological magnetoelectric effects. Recent research has suggested that axion insulators may be capable of detecting dark-matter axion-like particles by coupling to their axionic excitations. Beyond its fundamental theoretical interest, designing a photonic AXI offers the potential to enable the development of magnetically-tunable photonic switch devices through the manipulation of the axionic modes and their chiral propagation using external magnetic fields. Motivated by these facts, in this work, we propose a novel approach to induce axionic band topology in gyrotropic 3D Weyl photonic crystals gapped by supercell modulation. To quantize an axionic angle, we create domain-walls across inversion-symmetric photonic crystals, incorporating a phase-obstruction in the supercell modulation of their dielectric elements. This allows us to bind chiral channels on inversion-related hinges, ultimately leading to the realization of an axionic chiral channel of light. Moreover, by controlling the material gyrotropic response, we demonstrate a physically accessible way of manipulating the axionic modes through a small external magnetic bias, which provides an effective topological switch between different 1D chiral photonic fiber configurations. Remarkably, the unidirectional axionic hinge states supported by the photonic axion insulator are buried in a fully connected 3D dielectric structure, thereby being protected from radiation through the electromagnetic continuum. Abstract

Tight-binding models can accurately predict the band structure and topology of crystalline systems and they have been heavily used in solid-state physics due to their versatility and low computational cost. It is quite straightforward to build an accurate tight-binding model of any crystalline system using the maximally localized Wannier functions of the crystal as a basis. In 1D and 2D photonic crystals, it is possible to express the wave equation as two decoupled scalar eigenproblems where finding a basis of maximally localized Wannier functions is feasible using standard Wannierization methods. Unfortunately, in 3D photonic crystals, the vectorial nature of the electromagnetic solutions cannot be avoided. This precludes the construction of a basis of maximally localized Wannier functions via usual techniques. In this work, we show how to overcome this problem by using topological quantum chemistry which will allow us to express the band structure of the photonic crystal as a difference of elementary band representations. This can be achieved by the introduction of a set of auxiliary modes, as recently proposed by Solja\v{c}i\'c et. al., which regularize the $\Gamma$-point obstruction arising from transversality constraint of the Maxwell equations. The decomposition into elementary band representations allows us to isolate a set of pseudo-orbitals that permit us to construct an accurate transversality-enforced tight-binding model (TETB) that matches the dispersion, symmetry content, and topology of the 3D photonic crystal under study. Moreover, we show how to introduce the effects of a gyrotropic bias in the framework, modeled via non-minimal coupling to a static magnetic field. 5. Morbimortalidad de la cirugía de urgencia en el paciente octogenario

Abstract

Objetivo: Evaluar los resultados en salud (morbilidad y mortalidad posoperatorias) y el estado funcional al alta de los pacientes mayores de 80 años sometidos a cirugía de urgencia. Método: Pacientes de edad > 80 años sometidos a cirugía de urgencia durante 1 año en el Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla, Santander, España. Se evaluaron datos preoperatorios (edad, sexo, tipo de cirugía, comorbilidad) y posoperatorios (complicaciones), así como mortalidad hospitalaria, a los 30 días y a los 6 meses de la cirugía. Resultados: En 2018-2019 fueron operados de urgencia 568 pacientes, de los cuales 407 fueron incluidos en el estudio. Edad media: 86.9 años. El 61.7% fueron mujeres. Estancia media hospitalaria: 10.4 días. El 41.3% fueron intervenciones traumatológicas, el 19.7% cirugía vascular, el 25.3% cirugía general-digestiva. Riesgo ASA medio: 2.88. Estado funcional al alta: 3.15. Complicaciones posoperatorias: Clavien-Dindo I 40.8%, II 40.3%, IIIA 3.4%, IIIB 2.5%, IVA 3.9%, IVB 2.0% y V 7.1%. Mortalidad: hospitalaria 7.1%, a los 30 días 10.3% y a los 6 meses 24.6%. Conclusiones: Los pacientes > 80 años sometidos a cirugía urgente presentan elevada comorbilidad preoperatoria, complicaciones posoperatorias y elevada mortalidad a 30 días y 6 meses de la cirugía. Esta mortalidad es más significativa en los ASA IV, nonagenarios y sometidos a cirugía de alto riesgo.

Abstract

Evolutionary medicine can help to better understand the basis of pelvic floor disorders. Some evidences of the anthropological literature are reviewed, with emphasis on the paleontological clues and phylogenetic comparison of cephalo-pelvic relations in Homo and non-human primates, is undertaken to elucidate the origin of pelvic floor disturbances in humans. Labor difficulties inherent to bipedal gait and the encephalization process could have started several million years ago with Australopithecus and appear undeniable since Homo heidelbergensis, the precursor of Neanderthals. The mechanisms involved in modern human delivery with fetal rotation into the birth canal could be exclusive of Homo sapiens. Among pre-bipedal non-human primates only squirrel monkey can suffer severe dystocia and spontaneous pelvic organ prolapse. Better understanding of the evolutionary changes regarding the human pelvis and the pelvic floor could help us to better understand pelvic floor disorders and the interventions to avoid this highly prevalent ailment.

Abstract

In 2D Chern insulators (2D CI), the topology of the bulk states is captured by a topological invariant, the Chern number. The scalar bulk-boundary correspondence (sBBC) relates the change in Chern number across an interface with the number of 1D chiral edge modes at the interface. However, 3D Chern insulators (3D CI) can be characterized by a Chern vector C = (Cx, Cy, Cz) and a more general vector bulk-boundary correspondence (vBBC) is needed to correctly predict the propagation of the surface modes. In this work the possible interfaces between 3D photonic CIs are explored, focusing on possible changes in Chern vector orientation. To formulate a 3D vBBC, a link is derived between the Chern vector discontinuity across an interface and the winding of the surface equifrequency loops on the boundary. Lastly, it is demonstrated how to correctly predict the number and the propagation direction of topological photonic surface modes in 3D CIs.

Abstract

The Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has adopted the FAIR Guiding Principles. The Atlas chapter of Working Group I (WGI) is presented as a test case. Here, we describe the application of these principles in the Atlas, the challenges faced during its implementation, and those that remain for the future. We present the open source repository resulting from this process, which collects the code (including annotated Jupyter notebooks), data provenance, and some aggregated datasets underpinning the key figures in the Atlas chapter and its interactive companion (the Interactive Atlas), open to scrutiny by the scientific community and the general public. We describe the informal pilot review conducted on this repository to gather recommendations that led to significant improvements. Finally, a working example illustrates the use of the repository to produce customized regional information, extending the Interactive Atlas products and running the code interactively in a web browser using Jupyter notebooks. Abstract

The aim of this work is to describe several experiences of STEMbach in different areas: engineering, economics, materials, etc. The STEMbach is a program carried out by high school students during their two years of study to obtain their High School Diploma (equivalent to A-levels), designed for both the Humanities and Sciences modalities, and created alongside the Galician strategy for digital education. It encourages the vocation of the scholars towards scientific and technological research and allows a connection directly with the college education. The STEM works explained in this work were developed between the University of A Coruña and several high schools located in the region of Galicia (North-West of Spain). Results were very constructive for promoting STEM careers.

Abstract

The interplay between interactions and topology in quantum materials is of extensive current interest. Strong correlations are known to be important for insulating topological states, as exemplified by the fractional quantum Hall effect. For the metallic case, whether and how they can drive topological states that have no free-electron counterparts is an open and pressing question. We introduce a general framework for lattice symmetries to constrain single-particle excitations even when they are not quasiparticles, and substantiate it in a periodic Anderson model with two channels of conduction electrons. We demonstrate that symmetry constrains correlation-induced emergent excitations to produce non-Fermi liquid topological phases. The loss of quasiparticles in these phases is manifested in a non-Fermi liquid form of spectral and transport properties, whereas its topological nature is characterized by surface states and valley and spin Hall conductivities. We also identify candidate materials to realize the proposed phases. Abstract

Time Reversal Symmetry (TRS) broken topological phases provide gapless surface states protected by topology, regardless of additional internal symmetries, spin or valley degrees of freedom. Despite the numerous demonstrations of 2D topological phases, few examples of 3D topological systems with TRS breaking exist. In this article, we devise a general strategy to design 3D Chern insulating (3D CI) cubic photonic crystals in a weakly TRS broken environment with orientable and arbitrarly large Chern vectors. The designs display topologically protected chiral and unidirectional surface states with disjoint equifrequency loops. The resulting crystals present the following novel characteristics: First, by increasing the Chern number, multiple surface states channels can be supported. Second, the Chern vector can be oriented along any direction simply changing the magnetization axis, opening up larger 3D CI/3D CI interfacing possibilities as compared to 2D. Third, by lowering the TRS breaking requirements, the system is ideal for realistic photonic applications where the magnetic response is weak.

Abstract

The structure of the doubly magic $^{132}_{50}$Sn$_{82}$ has been investigated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, populated both by the $\beta^-$decay of $^{132}$In and $\beta^-$-delayed neutron emission of $^{133}$In. The level scheme of $^{132}$Sn is greatly expanded with the addition of 68 $\gamma$-transitions and 17 levels observed for the first time in the $\beta$ decay. The information on the excited structure is completed by new $\gamma$-transitions and states populated in the $\beta$-n decay of $^{133}$In. Improved delayed neutron emission probabilities are obtained both for $^{132}$In and $^{133}$In. Level lifetimes are measured via the Advanced Time-Delayed $\beta\gamma\gamma$(t) fast-timing method. An interpretation of the level structure is given based on the experimental findings and the particle-hole configurations arising from core excitations both from the \textit{N} = 82 and \textit{Z} = 50 shells, leading to positive and negative parity particle-hole multiplets. 23. Impacto del confinamiento por COVID-19 en la prescripción de benzodiacepinas

Abstract

Resumen: Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto del confinamiento por COVID-19 sobre la prescripción de benzodiacepinas según edad, sexo y zona básica de salud. Diseño: Estudio observacional longitudinal. Emplazamiento: Atención primaria. Área V de Salud del Principado de Asturias. Participantes: Mayores de 15 años a los que se prescribieron benzodiacepinas entre 2017 y 2020. Mediciones principales: Diferencia de las medias de dosis diaria definida por 1.000 habitantes (DHD) mensual de benzodiacepinas entre el periodo definido como preconfinamiento y el confinamiento. Además, se ajusta la diferencia por edad, sexo y zona básica de salud, así como por la interacción entre ellas. Resultados: La DHD media preconfinamiento fue 131,3 y 139,5 durante el confinamiento; en el análisis crudo, esta diferencia fue estadísticamente significativa (IC 95% 4,1 a 12,1). Se objetivó un aumento de DHD media en el grupo de 60-74 años (IC 95% 2,28 a 21,42) y en el de 90 años o más (IC 95% 21,31 a 40,63), así como en las mujeres (IC 95% 3,51 a 14,59). Finalmente, se observó una disminución de DHD media en las zonas básicas V11 (IC 95% -29 a -0,66) y V14 (IC 95% -54,28 a -25,04). Conclusiones: Determinados subgrupos muestran un cambio en la tendencia de dispensación de benzodiacepinas sin poder atribuirse completamente al confinamiento. Creemos que pueda existir una inercia terapéutica en la prescripción de psicofármacos, según las características biopsicosociales del paciente, que es importante detectar para evitar la medicalización de cuadros psicológicos. Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the effect of COVID-19 lockdown on the prescription of benzodiazepines by gender, age and district health departments. Design: Longitudinal observational study. Location: Primary care. Asturias (Spain) health district V. Participants: People over 15 years of age with filled benzodiazepine prescriptions in between 2017 and 2020. Main measurements: Benzodiazepine DHD (defined daily dose per 1000 habitants) mean difference between the period defined as pre-lockdown and lockdown. Additionally, the difference was adjusted for gender, sex and district health department and also with the interaction among them. Results: DHD mean pre-lockdown was 131.3 and 139.5 in the lockdown; this difference was significant in the global analysis (95% CI: 4.1–12.1). There was an increase in the DHD mean in the 60–74 age group (95% CI: 2.28–21.42), in the group over 90 years old (95% CI: 21.31–40.63) and in women (95% CI: 3.51–14.59). Finally, a decrease in the DHD mean of V11 (95% CI: -29 to -0.66) and V14 (95% CI: -54.28 to -25.04) district health departments was observed. Conclusions: Certain subgroups show a change in the pattern of benzodiazepine prescription without being able to relate this to the lockdown. We believe that there could be some inertia in the prescription of psychiatric medication according to the biopsychosocial characteristics of the patients; it is important to detect this in order to avoid the medicalization of psychological disorders.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Trypanosoma cruzi infection has expanded globally through human migration. In Spain, the mother-to-child route is the mode of transmission contributing to autochthonous Chagas disease (CD); however, most people acquired the infection in their country of origin and were diagnosed in the chronic phase (imported chronic CD). In this context, we assessed the quantitative potential of the Loopamp Trypanosoma cruzi detection kit (Sat-TcLAMP) based on satellite DNA (Sat-DNA) to determine parasitemia levels compared to those detected by real-time quantitative PCRs (qPCRs) targeting Sat-DNA (Sat-qPCR) and kinetoplast DNA minicircles (kDNA-qPCR). This study included 173 specimens from 39 autochthonous congenital and 116 imported chronic CD cases diagnosed in Spain. kDNA-qPCR showed higher sensitivity than Sat-qPCR and Sat-TcLAMP. Abstract

Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation has profound effects on the skin and the systemic immune system. Several effects of UV radiation on Dendritic cells (DCs) functions have been described. However, gene expression changes induced by UV radiation in DCs have not been addressed before. In this report, we irradiated human monocyte-derived DCs with solar-simulated UVA/UVB and analyzed regulated genes on human whole genome arrays. Results were validated by RT-PCR and further analyzed by Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA). Solar-simulated UV radiation up-regulated expression of genes involved in cellular stress and inflammation, and down-regulated genes involved in chemotaxis, vesicular transport and RNA processing. Twenty four genes were selected for comparison by RT-PCR with similarly treated human primary keratinocytes and human melanocytes. Several genes involved in the regulation of the immune response were differentially regulated in UVA/UVB irradiated human monocyte-derived DCs, such as protein tyrosine phosphatase, receptor type E (PTPRE), thrombospondin-1 (THBS1), inducible costimulator ligand (ICOSL), galectins, Src-like adapter protein (SLA), IL-10 and CCR7. Resumen: Introducción: El desarrollo normativo de la Ley 44/2003, a través del Real Decreto 639/2014, inició el proceso de reorganización de la Formación Sanitaria Especializada (FSE). El objetivo de este trabajo es elaborar una propuesta de competencias específicas para la especialidad de Medicina Preventiva y Salud Pública mediante un análisis comparado y proceso participativo. Métodos: Cuatro fases: 1) análisis y extracción de competencias de documentación de organismos oficiales; 2) consulta dirigida a personas clave; 3) consulta abierta a residentes y personas implicadas en la FSE, y 4) difusión a la Comisión Nacional de la Especialidad y público general. Resultados: 1) Se extrajeron 543 competencias y 67 categorías de 7 fuentes primarias (Austria, Canadá, ECDC, Estados Unidos, Francia, Reino Unido y OPS). Se produjeron 126 competencias en 12 categorías. 2) Participaron 10 personas clave, 64 competencias fueron modificadas, 10 eliminadas y 9 nuevas. 3) Hubo 32 respuestas: 132 competencias en 12 categorías. Propuesta final: 145 competencias en 21 categorías, organizadas en 3 bloques: competencias genéricas, técnicas y específicas. Conclusión: La propuesta final es producto de la participación de residentes y personas implicadas en la FSE, partiendo del actual marco y del análisis del desarrollo de la especialidad en el contexto internacional. Se han incorporado conceptos presentes en países de nuestro entorno y cercanos a la práctica. The aim of this project is to elaborate a proposal of specific skills for the specialty of Preventive Medicine and Public Health using a comparative and participative approach. Methods: 1) Comparative analysis of documents published by official institutions; 2) consultation with key informants; 3) open consultation with residents and trainers, and 4) presentation to the National Commission of the Specialty and the general public. Results: 1) 126 competencies were found in 12 categories. 2) 10 key informants, 64 skills modified, 10 removed, and 9 added; 3) 32 responses the first draft contained 132 skills in 12 categories. The final proposal included 145 skills in 21 categories, classified into 3 areas: generic, technical, and specific skills. Conclusion: The final proposal is the product of participation of residents and individuals involved in specialised training, starting from the current framework and international context analysis. Concepts present in countries in this field and close to our professional activity have been included.

Abstract

Abstract Background and Aims During the first peak of the COVID‐19 pandemic, the Preventive Medicine Department and the Occupational Health Department at Hospital Clinic de Barcelona (HCB), a large Spanish referral hospital, developed an innovative comprehensive SARS‐CoV2 Surveillance and Control System (CoSy‐19) in order to preserve patients' and health care workers' (HCWs) safety. We aim to describe the CoSy‐19 and to assess the impact in the number of contacts that new cases generated along this time. Methods Observational descriptive study of the findings of the activity of contact tracing of all cases received at the HCB during the first peak of COVID‐19 in Spain (February 25th‐May 3rd, 2020). Results A team of 204 professionals and volunteers performed 384 in‐hospital contact‐tracing studies which generated contacts, detecting 298 transmission chains which suggested preventive measures, generated around 22 000 follow‐ups and more than 30 000 days of work leave. The number of contacts that new cases generated decreased during the study period. Conclusion Coordination between Preventive Medicine and Occupational Health departments and agile information systems were necessary to preserve non‐COVID activity and workers safety.

Abstract

Many low-density nanoparticles show a radial inner structure. This work proposes a novel approach to contrast variation with SAXS based on the constitution of a solvent density gradient in a glass capillary in order to resolve this internal morphology. Scattering curves of a polymeric core-shell colloid were recorded at different suspending medium contrasts at the four-crystal monochromator beamline of PTB at the synchrotron radiation facility BESSY II. The mean size and size distribution of the particles as well as an insight into the colloid electron density composition were determined using the position of the isoscattering points in the Fourier region of the scattering curves and by examining the Guinier region in detail. Abstract

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and X-ray absorption (XA) experiments at the iron L- and nitrogen K-edge are combined with high-level first principles restricted active space self-consistent field (RASSCF) calculations for a systematic investigation of the nature of the chemical bond in potassium ferrocyanide in aqueous solution. The atom- and site-specific RIXS excitations allow for direct observation of ligand-to-metal (Fe L-edge) and metal-to-ligand (N K-edge) charge transfer bands and thereby evidence for strong {\sigma}-donation and {\pi}-back-donation. The effects are identified by comparing experimental and simulated spectra related to both the unoccupied and occupied molecular orbitals in solution.

45. Critical evaluation of in situ analyses for the characterisation of red pigments in rock paintings: A case study from El Castillo, Spain

Abstract

Paint technology, namely paint preparation and application procedures, is an important aspect of painting traditions. With the expansion of archaeometric studies and in situ non-destructive analytical methods, a renewal of technological studies is being observed in rock art. In situ analyses have several limitations that are widely discussed in the literature, however. It is not yet clear whether they provide accurate information on paint technology, except under certain conditions. Here, we evaluated digital microscopic and pXRF in situ analyses for the characterisation of a large set of red and yellow paintings from the El Castillo cave, Cantabria, Spain. We have set experiments and used statistical methods to identify differences between paint components and determine factors impacting pXRF measurements. We found that the compositional heterogeneity of the paintings’ environment, especially variations in secondary deposits, was responsible for most of the differences observed between the pXRF signals recorded on the paintings. We concluded that the El Castillo cave environment is not suitable for non-destructive technological studies, but that more favourable contexts might exist. Following previous works and our own results, we advocate a combination of both in situ and laboratory invasive analyses for the study of paint composition and paint technology. Our research protocol, based on the comparison of rock paintings, their substrate, experimental paintings and Fe-normalisation of the signals can improve the reliability of pXRF results. We also propose to include more systematic characterisation of rock wall heterogeneity and the use of microscopic analyses in non-destructive approaches.

46. The Sum-over-Forests density index: identifying dense regions in a graph

Abstract

This work introduces a novel nonparametric density index defined on graphs, the Sum-over-Forests (SoF) density index. It is based on a clear and intuitive idea: high-density regions in a graph are characterized by the fact that they contain a large amount of low-cost trees with high outdegrees while low-density regions contain few ones. Therefore, a Boltzmann probability distribution on the countable set of forests in the graph is defined so that large (high-cost) forests occur with a low probability while short (low-cost) forests occur with a high probability. Then, the SoF density index of a node is defined as the expected outdegree of this node in a non-trivial tree of the forest, thus providing a measure of density around that node. Following the matrix-forest theorem, and a statistical physics framework, it is shown that the SoF density index can be easily computed in closed form through a simple matrix inversion. Experiments on artificial and real data sets show that the proposed index performs well on finding dense regions, for graphs of various origins.

Abstract

This paper defines a methodology for the economic feasibility analysis of a floating offshore wind farm composed of tensioned leg platforms, which are part of the EU ARCWIND research project. In this context, the phases and subphases of its life-cycle process are considered to deal with aspects such as bathymetry, characteristics of the platforms, distance from the farm to shore, distance from the farm to port and offshore wind speed. All the costs and other external parameters such as capital cost, electric tariff, interest rate, percentage of financing and corporate tax have been analysed to calculate the internal rate of return, net present value, discounted pay-back period and levelized cost of energy of the farm. This work studies a farm composed of TLP offshore wind platforms designed by CENTEC and located at Ribadeo in Spain. Results indicate the costs and the economic feasibility of this platform for deep waters. They indicate that the platform is economically feasible for the location selected.
