Abstract

At first glance, the ruins of the Roman Theatre in the Italian town of Volterra have little in common with cassette tapes containing Atari games. One is certainly considered an important historical landmark, while the consensus on the importance of the other is partial at best. Still, both are remnants of times vastly different from the present and are at risk of oblivion. Unearthed architectural structures are exposed to the elements just as the deteriorating signals stored on magnetic tapes. However, the rate of deterioration is much faster with the magnetic media, as their life expectancy is counted in decades, whereas the Roman Theater, which is already in ruin, measures its lifespan in centuries. Hence, both would benefit from some form of digital preservation and reconstruction. Abstract

Technology is increasingly used in Nature Reserves and National Parks around the world to support conservation efforts. Endangered species, such as the Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx), are monitored by a network of automatic photo traps. Yet, this method produces vast amounts of data, which needs to be prepared, analyzed and interpreted. Therefore, researchers working in this area increasingly need support to process this incoming information. One opportunity is to seek support from volunteer Citizen Scientists who can help label the data, however, it is challenging to retain their interest. Another way is to automate the process with image recognition using convolutional neural networks. Abstract

Revived interest in lunar and planetary exploration is heralding a new era for human spaceflight, characterized by frequent strain on astronaut's mental well-being, which stems from increased exposure to isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) conditions. Whilst Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) has been employed to facilitate self-help interventions to mitigate challenges caused by isolated environments in several domains, its applicability in support of future space expeditions remains largely unexplored. To address this limitation, we administered the use of distinct IVR environments to crew members (n=5) partaking in a simulated lunar habitat study. Utilizing a Bayesian approach to scrutinize small group data, we discovered a significant relationship between IVR usage and a reduction in perceived stress-related symptoms, particularly those associated with asthenia (syndrome often linked to chronic fatigue and weakness; a condition characterized by feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion that can be amplified in ICE conditions). The reductions were most prominent with the use of interactive virtual environments. The 'Aesthetic Realities' - virtual environments conceived as art exhibits - received exceptional praise from our participants. These environments mark a fascinating convergence of art and science, holding promise to mitigate effects related to isolation in spaceflight training and beyond.

Abstract

In this paper, we explore the usability of a custom eXtensible Robotic Language (XRL) we proposed. To evaluate the user experience and the interaction with the potential XRL-based software robot, we conducted an exploratory study comparing the notation of three business processes using our XRL language and two languages used by the leading RPA solutions. The results of our exploratory study show that the currently used XML-based formats perform worse in terms of conciseness and readability. Our new XRL language is promising in terms of increasing the readability of the language, thus reducing the time needed to automate business processes., Comment: 12 pages

Abstract

Alpha-XR Mission conducted by XR Lab PJAIT focused on research related to individual and crew well-being and participatory team collaboration in ICE (isolated, confined and extreme) conditions. In this two-week mission within an analog space habitat, collaboration, objective execution and leisure was facilitated and studied by virtual reality (VR) tools. The mission commander and first officer, both experienced with virtual reality, took part in daily briefings with mission control. In the first week the briefings were voice-only conducted via a channel on Discord. During the following week last briefings were conducted in VR, using Horizon Workrooms. This qualitative pilot study employing participatory observation revealed that VR facilitates communication, especially on complex problems and experiences, providing the sense of emotional connection and shared understanding, that may be lacking in audio calls. The study points to the need to further explore VR-facilitated communication in high-stake environments as it may improve relationships, well-being, and communication outcomes., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

In etymological terms, administration refers to activities performed in a permanent manner, aimed at achieving various goals and results. The Latin phrases ministrō and ministrāre mean: "to serve", "to perform" and "to manage", while the phrase minister refers to a person serving and performing. The use of the preposition ad should be interpreted in this context as directed activity - the equivalent of the Polish prefix "do", and therefore the expression ad ministro can be described as "directing" and "governing". The science of administrative law, just like the science of administration, provides that certain properties can be assigned to administration without defining it. It is such a complex phenomenon in itself that defining it is very difficult or even impossible. The same applies to individual forms of administration. Legal regulations were analyzed, including systemic ones related to the place, role and organization of public administration in Poland.

Abstract

Among the forms of public assistance of a passive nature are tax concessions and exemptions. A given form of aid can be of liquidity support, rescue and restructuring and pro-development nature for the enterprise. This form of assistance is reflected in the reduction of revenues to the state and local government budgets. Tax credits, used as investment incentives for entrepreneurs, can affect the growth of production, and in the case of new investments, the creation of new jobs or the retention of existing ones. The article presents the provisions of the tax law on real estate tax in correlation with the law on state aid, in the context of an assessment of - to what extent on the grounds of real estate tax it is possible to operate reliefs and exemptions that constitute state aid for entrepreneurs. The legal problems of providing state aid and the issues of tax procedures in the field of tax reliefs and exemptions and the calculation of the net value of state aid are presented.

Abstract

The Demoscene is a pioneering digital culture and an art form. Its roots in Poland date back to the mid-1980s. In 2019, the Polish Demosceners, alongside their Finnish and German counterparts in the Art of Coding campaign, embarked on an initiative to advocate for the recognition of the Demoscene by UNESCO. This move highlighted the tension between the inherently decentralised and demarcating nature of the Demoscene and formal requirements of cultural heritage preservation. In this paper, we present a brief overview of the Demoscene, combining personal observations from the UNESCO enlisting process with insights gathered from a supportive study conducted among Demoscene community members. The results of this study are presented in the context of digital preservation challenges in various domains, offering a comparative perspective. The paper concludes with some insights into what information to store alongside the Demoscene productions themselves and outlines potential further work, addressing both current and emerging challenges faced by the Demoscene community.

14. Quasi-optimal $hp$-finite element refinements towards singularities via deep neural network prediction

Abstract

We show how to construct the deep neural network (DNN) expert to predict quasi-optimal $hp$-refinements for a given computational problem. The main idea is to train the DNN expert during executing the self-adaptive $hp$-finite element method ($hp$-FEM) algorithm and use it later to predict further $hp$ refinements. For the training, we use a two-grid paradigm self-adaptive $hp$-FEM algorithm. It employs the fine mesh to provide the optimal $hp$ refinements for coarse mesh elements. We aim to construct the DNN expert to identify quasi-optimal $hp$ refinements of the coarse mesh elements. During the training phase, we use the direct solver to obtain the solution for the fine mesh to guide the optimal refinements over the coarse mesh element. After training, we turn off the self-adaptive $hp$-FEM algorithm and continue with quasi-optimal refinements as proposed by the DNN expert trained. We test our method on three-dimensional Fichera and two-dimensional L-shaped domain problems. We verify the convergence of the numerical accuracy with respect to the mesh size. We show that the exponential convergence delivered by the self-adaptive $hp$-FEM can be preserved if we continue refinements with a properly trained DNN expert. Thus, in this paper, we show that from the self-adaptive $hp$-FEM it is possible to train the DNN expert the location of the singularities, and continue with the selection of the quasi-optimal $hp$ refinements, preserving the exponential convergence of the method., Comment: 30 pages, 19 figures

23. Locally nilpotent skew extensions of rings

Abstract

We extend existing results on locally nilpotent differential polynomial rings to skew extensions of rings. We prove that if $\mathscr{G}=\{\sigma_t\}_{t\in T}$ is a locally finite family of automorphisms of an algebra $R$, $\mathscr{D}=\{\delta_t\}_{t\in T}$ is a family of skew derivations of $R$ such that the prime radical $P$ of $R$ is strongly invariant under $\mathscr{D}$, then the ideal $P\langle T,\mathscr{G},\mathscr{D}\rangle^*$ of $R\langle T,\mathscr{G},\mathscr{D}\rangle$, generated by $P$, is locally nilpotent. We then apply this result to algebras with locally nilpotent derivations. 24. On the generic family of Cayley graphs of a finite group

Abstract

Let $G$ be a finite group. For each $m>1$ we define the symmetric canonical subset $S=S(m)$ of the Cartesian power $G^m$ and we consider the family of Cayley graphs $\mathscr{G}_m(G)=Cay(G^m,S)$. We describe properties of these graphs and show that for a fixed $m>1$ and groups $G$ and $H$ the graphs $\mathscr{G}_m(G)$ and $\mathscr{G}_m(H)$ are isomorphic if and only if the groups $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic. We describe also the groups of automorphisms $\mathbf{Aut}(\mathscr{G}_m(G))$. It is shown that if $G$ is a non-abelian group, then $\mathbf{Aut}(\mathscr{G}_m(G))\simeq \big(G^m \rtimes \mathbf{Aut}(G)\big)\rtimes D_{m+1}$, where $D_{m+1}$ is the dihedral group of order $2m+2$. If $G$ is an abelian group (with some exceptions for $m=3$), then $\mathbf{Aut}(\mathscr{G}_m(G))\simeq G^m\rtimes \big(\mathbf{Aut}(G)\times S_{m+1}\big)$, where $S_{m+1}$ is the symmetric group of degree $m+1$. It is proved that there exists a positive integer $\upsilon(G)$ such that for any $g_1,g_2,\dots, g_{n}\in G$ $$ \upsilon(G)\cdot \zeta_{1,g_1}\zeta_{2,g_2}\dots\zeta_{n,g_{n}}=\sum_{i=1}^N \gamma_i a_i\mathbf{tr}_G(b_i)c_i, $$ where $\gamma_1,\gamma_2,\dots,\gamma_N$ are integers, and $a_i, b_i, c_i$ are monomials in $\zeta_{i,g}$ such that ${\rm deg}(b_i)>0$ and ${\rm deg}(a_i)+{\rm deg}(b_i)+{\rm deg}(c_i)=n$. Abstract

Disorders of cardiomyocyte metabolism play a crucial role in many cardiovascular diseases, such as myocardial infarction, heart failure and ischemia–reperfusion injury. In myocardial infarction, cardiomyocyte metabolism is regulated by mitochondrial changes and biogenesis, which allows energy homeostasis. There are many proteins in cells that regulate and control metabolic processes. One of them is irisin (Ir), which is released from the transmembrane protein FNDC5. Initial studies indicated that Ir is a myokine secreted mainly by skeletal muscles. Further studies showed that Ir was also present in various tissues. However, its highest levels were observed in cardiomyocytes. Ir is responsible for many processes, including the conversion of white adipose tissue (WAT) to brown adipose tissue (BAT) by increasing the expression of thermogenin (UCP1). 32. Anomia of Numbers a Rare Post-Stroke Language Impairment. A Case Study on a Patient with Isolated Naming Impairment of Numerals

Abstract

Introduction: Word-finding impairments (anomia) are the most common, specific symptom of aphasia, which in adults, are most frequently caused by stroke. Although anomic difficulties usually manifest themselves in different forms of speech and involve various word classes, in very rare cases, they may involve only one category of words. This type of disorder is called category-specific anomia.Objective: The aim of the article is to describe changes regarding verbal communication in a patient with post-stroke aphasia, particularly the analysis of category-specific anomia for numbers, recognised in the long-term from the disease onset.Material and methods: The patient's language skills were assessed during the 2nd week, 3rd month (period of spontaneous recovery and early neurorehabilitation), and 12 months post-stroke (distant neuro-rehabilitation period) using the Boston Test for the Diagnosis of Aphasia and clinical trials to assess different cognitive dysfunctions that can affect the ability to name numbers.Results: The results allowed to identify the following in the patient and in the following sequence: profound mixed aphasia (2nd week post-stroke), mild and moderate language deficits (3rd month post-stroke) and an isolated anomia of numbers (12th month after stroke). Due to functional improvement, one year after the stroke, the patient performed the tasks of naming objects, activities and describing the features of objects almost without errors. In addition, he efficiently recognised and differentiated the values of numbers, correctly wrote down the numbers under dictation and carried out proper mathematical calculations. However, these data contrasted with profoundly low results in the trials to name numerals (digits and numbers, hours, dates), assessed as anomia of numbers.Conclusions: Anomia of numbers is a very rare post-stroke language deficit that can be diagnosed in people with aphasia after the withdrawal of co-existing language disorders and the exclusion of possible causes, other than the nominating ones, of incorrect verbal responses to numerical material.

Abstract

Abstract Photobiomodulation (PBM) in the red/near-infrared (R/NIR) spectral range has become widely recognized due to its anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective potential. We aimed to assess the effects of blood PBM on platelets function and hemolysis in an in vitro setting. Porcine blood samples were separated into four aliquots for this study, one of which served as a control, while the other three were subjected to three different NIR PBM dosages. The platelet count and functions and the plasma free haemoglobin and osmotic fragility of red blood cells were measured during the experiment. The control group had a considerable drop in platelet number, but the NIR exposed samples had more minimal and strictly dose-dependent alterations. These modifications were consistent with ADP and collagen-induced platelet aggregation. Furthermore, red blood cells that had received PBM were more resistant to osmotic stress and less prone to hemolysis, as seen by a slightly lower quantity of plasma free hemoglobin. Here we showed under well-controlled in vitro conditions that PBM reversibly inhibits platelet activation in a dose-dependent manner and reduces hemolysis.

Abstract

This paper focuses on modeling ride requests and their variations over location and time, based on analyzing extensive real-world data from a ride-sharing service. We introduce a graph model that captures the spatial and temporal variability of ride requests and the potentials for ride pooling. We discover these ride request graphs exhibit a well known property called densification power law often found in real graphs modelling human behaviors. We show the pattern of ride requests and the potential of ride pooling for a city can be characterized by the densification factor of the ride request graphs. Previous works have shown that it is possible to automatically generate synthetic versions of these graphs that exhibit a given densification factor. Abstract

Adrenomedullin has emerged as a promising biomarker in the field of viral diseases. Numerous studies have demonstrated its potential in assessing disease severity, predicting clinical outcomes, and monitoring treatment response. Adrenomedullin (AM) is a multifaceted peptide implicated in vasodilation, hormone secretion, antimicrobial defense, cellular growth, angiogenesis, and, importantly, chronic pain. AM and related peptides interface with cytoskeletal proteins within neuronal contexts, influencing microtubule dynamics. AM has primarily been utilized in diagnosing diseases of bacterial origin, including sepsis. Nevertheless, there are reports suggesting its utility in diseases of viral origin, and this is the focus of the present study. Furthermore, adrenomedullin has been shown to be elevated in various viral infections, suggesting its role in immune response modulation. Furthermore, AM may contribute to neuronal dysfunction through mechanisms involving immune and inflammatory responses, apoptosis, and disruptions in calcium homeostasis. This review aims to consolidate current knowledge regarding AM and its potential implications in viral diseases, elucidating its diverse roles in neurological pathophysiology. This review highlights the growing importance of adrenomedullin as a biomarker in viral diseases and the need for further functional studies to understand the underlying mechanisms involved. Abstract

Background/Aim: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide. In 2019, 523 million people were diagnosed with CVD, with 18.6 million deaths. Improved treatment and diagnostics could reduce CVD’s impact. Irisin (Ir) is crucial for heart function and may be a biomarker for heart attack. Ir is a glycoprotein with sugar residues attached to its protein structure. This glycosylation affects Ir stability, solubility, and receptor interactions on target cells. Its secondary structure includes a fibronectin type III domain, essential for its biological functions. Ir helps cardiomyocytes to respond to hypoxia and protects mitochondria. The aim of the study was to determine the FNDC5 gene expression level and the Ir level in HL-1 cardiomyocytes subjected to hypoxia. Materials and Methods: We examined the effect of hypoxia on the expression levels of the FNDC5 gene and those of Ir in mouse cardiomyocytes of the HL-1 cell line. Real-time PCR (RT-PCR) was used to estimate the expression levels of the FNDC5 gene. Western blot and immunofluorescence methods were used to analyze the Ir protein levels. Results: Analyses showed an increased Ir level in HL-1 cardiomyocytes in response to hypoxia. This is the first study to confirm the presence of Ir in HL-1 cells. Conclusion: The observed increase in Ir expression in murine cardiomyocytes is associated with the hypoxic environment and can be potentially used to diagnose hypoxia and CVD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Results on two-particle $\Delta\eta\Delta\phi$ correlations in inelastic p+p interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158~GeV/c are presented. The measurements were performed using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The data show structures which can be attributed mainly to effects of resonance decays, momentum conservation, and quantum statistics. Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. Abstract

Measurements of particle emission from a replica of the T2K 90 cm-long carbon target were performed in the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN SPS, using data collected during a high-statistics run in 2009. An efficient use of the long-target measurements for neutrino flux predictions in T2K requires dedicated reconstruction and analysis techniques. Fully-corrected differential yields of $\pi^\pm$-mesons from the surface of the T2K replica target for incoming 31 GeV/c protons are presented. A possible strategy to implement these results into the T2K neutrino beam predictions is discussed and the propagation of the uncertainties of these results to the final neutrino flux is performed.

Abstract

Background: Mortality among people with HIV declined with the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy. We investigated trends over time in all-cause and cause-specific mortality in people with HIV from 1999-2020. Methods: Data were collected from the D:A:D cohort from 1999 through January 2015 and RESPOND from October 2017 through 2020. Age-standardized all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates, classified using Coding Causes of Death in HIV (CoDe), were calculated. Poisson regression models were used to assess mortality trends over time. Results: Among 55716 participants followed for a median of 6 years (IQR 3-11), 5263 participants died (crude mortality rate [MR] 13.7/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 13.4-14.1). Changing patterns of mortality were observed with AIDS as the most common cause of death between 1999- 2009 (n = 952, MR 4.2/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 4.0-4.5) and non-AIDS defining malignancy (NADM) from 2010 -2020 (n = 444, MR 2.8/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 2.5-3.1). In multivariable analysis, all-cause mortality declined over time (adjusted mortality rate ratio [aMRR] 0.97 per year; 95%CI 0.96, 0.98), mostly from 1999 through 2010 (aMRR 0.96 per year; 95%CI 0.95-0.97), and with no decline shown from 2011 through 2020 (aMRR 1·00 per year; 95%CI 0·96-1·05). Mortality due all known causes except NADM also declined over the entire follow-up period. Conclusion: Mortality among people with HIV in the D:A:D and/or RESPOND cohorts decreased between 1999 and 2009 and was stable over the period from 2010 through 2020. The decline in mortality rates was not fully explained by improvements in immunologic-virologic status or other risk factors.

Abstract

Inclusive production of $\Lambda$-hyperons was measured with the large acceptance NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS in inelastic p+p interactions at beam momentum of 158~\GeVc. Spectra of transverse momentum and transverse mass as well as distributions of rapidity and x$_{_F}$ are presented. The mean multiplicity was estimated to be $0.120\,\pm0.006\;(stat.)\,\pm 0.010\;(sys.)$. Abstract

Measurements of hadron production in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c are performed using the NA61/ SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2009 using a graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Inelastic and production cross sections as well as spectra of $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, p, $K^0_S$ and $\Lambda$ are measured with high precision. These measurements are essential for improved calculations of the initial neutrino fluxes in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. Abstract

Measurements of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations of charged particles were performed in inelastic p+p interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c beam momentum. Results for the scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution and for three strongly intensive measures of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations \$\Delta[P_{T},N]\$, \$\Sigma[P_{T},N]\$ and \$\Phi_{p_T}\$ are presented. For the first time the results on fluctuations are fully corrected for experimental biases. The results on multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations significantly deviate from expectations for the independent particle production. They also depend on charges of selected hadrons. The string-resonance Monte Carlo models EPOS and UrQMD do not describe the data. The scaled variance of multiplicity fluctuations is significantly higher in inelastic p+p interactions than in central Pb+Pb collisions measured by NA49 at the same energy per nucleon. This is in qualitative disagreement with the predictions of the Wounded Nucleon Model. Within the statistical framework the enhanced multiplicity fluctuations in inelastic p+p interactions can be interpreted as due to event-by-event fluctuations of the fireball energy and/or volume., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Data from the experiment on the 197Au + 197Au reaction at 23 AMeV are analyzed with an aim to find signatures of exotic nuclear configurations such as toroid-shaped objects. The experimental data are compared with predictions of the ETNA code dedicated to look for such configurations and with the QMD model. A novel criterion of selecting events possibly resulting from the formation of exotic freeze-out configurations, "the efficiency factor", is tested. Comparison between experimental data and model predictions may indicate for the formation of flat/toroidal nuclear systems.
