Abstract

The PAMELA experiment was launched on board the Resurs-DK1 satellite on June 15th 2006. The apparatus was designed to conduct precision studies of charged cosmic radiation over a wide energy range, from tens of MeV up to several hundred GeV, with unprecedented statistics. In five years of continuous data taking in space, PAMELA accurately measured the energy spectra of cosmic ray antiprotons and positrons, as well as protons, electrons and light nuclei, sometimes providing data in unexplored energetic regions. These important results have shed new light in several astrophysical fields like: an indirect search for Dark Matter, a search for cosmological antimatter (anti-Helium), and the validation of acceleration, transport and secondary production models of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Some of the most important items of Solar and Magnetospheric physics were also investigated. Here we present the most recent results obtained by the PAMELA experiment.

Abstract

The lack of positive evidence for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) as well as the lack of discovery of supersymmetric (SUSY) particles at the LHC may appeal to a non-supersymmetric solution for the Standard Model problem of the Higgs boson mass divergence, the origin of the electroweak energy scale and the physical nature of the cosmological dark matter in the approach of composite Higgs boson. If the Higgs boson consists of charged constituents, their binding can lead to stable particles with electroweak charges. Such particles can take part in sphaleron transitions in the early Universe, which balance their excess with baryon asymmetry. Constraints on exotic charged species leave only stable particles with charge −2n possible, which can bind with n nuclei of primordial helium in neutral dark atoms. The predicted ratio of densities of dark atoms and baryonic matter determines the condition for dark atoms to dominate in the cosmological dark matter. To satisfy this condition of the dark-atom nature of the observed dark matter, the mass of new stable −2n charged particles should be within reach of the LHC for their searches. We discuss the possibilities of dark-atom binding in multi-atom systems and present state-of-the-art quantum mechanical descriptions of dark-atom interactions with nuclei. Annual modulations in such interactions with nuclei of underground detectors can explain the positive results of DAMA/NaI and DAMA/LIBRA experiments and the negative results of the underground WIMP searches.

Abstract

Background. Interest in the biological effects of electromagnetic radiation on biological objects is associated with the possibility of their use in solving a number of fundamental and applied problems: from the consideration of biological feedbacks in real time, which allows the development of electronic medical complexes, to the creation of neuro-computer interfaces, including components of living cells. Aim. The paper shows the development of a device for influencing biological objects with a permanent magnetic field, which allows modeling the basic parameters of the physical factor, for conducting a magnetobiological experiment with normalization of the effects of non-ionizing radiation of the specified parameters. Methods. The device for influencing biological objects of constant magnetic field allows to obtain, in a large volume, the most homogeneous magnetic field. Results. Mathematical modeling of changes in the morphofunctional state of the adrenal cortex according to eleven biological parameters at different periods of exposure to normalized constant magnetic field when exposed to the maximum permissible level was evaluated by the deviation of the interval indicator and its normalized value. The effect of this factor led to a deviation of the integral index in the glomerular zone of the adrenal glands on the 30th day was – 6,53 ± 1,30*10-2, later on the 60th day the deviation increased by 8,28 ± 1,55*10-2, on the 90th 4,84 ± 1,50*10-2, then on the 120th day, it did not differ from normalized. Conclusion. After the termination of the constant magnetic field in a series of 15–30 mT experiments, the morphofunctional state of the thymus returned to normal. Thus, the device is recommended for use in experimental activities.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of electrodynamic properties elliptical frame structure. Taking into account double symmetry internal problem of electrodynamics for the structure under consideration in the framework of the thin-wire approximation is reduced to four integral Fredholm equations of the first kind, written with respect to independent current functions. A study of spectral characteristics of the integral operators of the corresponding integral equations for various values of the electrical length and ellipticity of the frame. It is shown that the eigenfunctions of integral operators for close values of these parameters have a high degree of correlation, with In this case, the eigenfunctions are close in form to trigonometric functions. Features of the frequency dependence of the eigenvalues integral operators. The conclusion is made about the resonant nature of these dependences, what makes an elliptical frame structure in many respects similar to the previously considered tubular vibrator and spherical spiral particle. The results presented in the article form an in-depth understanding of the processes occurring in the structure under consideration, and also serve as a guideline in the construction of approximation models for solving the internal tasks.

Abstract

We present a study of the east–west anisotropy of trapped-proton fluxes in low-Earth orbit based on the measurements of the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics(PAMELA)experiment. The differential intensities of eastward- and westward-traveling protons detected in the South Atlantic Anomaly region were estimated as a function of equatorial pitch angle and drift shell, for six energy bins between80 MeV and 2 GeV. We found that, as a consequence of the strong atmospheric gradient coupled with the large gyro radius in this energy range, the intensities of eastward fluxes exceed those of westward fluxes by a factor of∼10–20. However, the reported directional asymmetry also depends on the sign of the local flux gradient, resulting in more intense westward fluxes beyond the radial distances where the inner belt peaks. PAMELA observations can be used to improve the description of the near-Earth radiation environment at lowest altitudes and highest trapping energies, where current theoretical and empirical models are affected by the largest uncertainties. Introduction Low-altitude inner-belt protons are strongly influenced by the density distribution of Earth’s atmosphere, mostly through interactions with its neutral constituents, which induce significant flux anisotropies. In prim is, the atmospheric loss cone results in a steep pitch-angle distribution, which becomes narrower for lower drift shells. A further, azimuthal anisotropy originates from finite gyro radius effects at proton energies in excess of a few tens of MeV(Haerendel1962; Lenchek & Singer1962). In fact, for a given spacecraft position, protons with the same pitch angle but different gyro phase—the azimuth angle associated with the gyration motion—have their guiding centers on different drift shells. In particular, protons from the west and from the east gyrate around magnetic field lines located at higher and lower altitudes, respectively. The guiding-center separationΔhincreaseswith increasing energy, so that protons moving eastward will encounter progressively lower drift-averaged densities, thus experiencing less atmospheric absorption; the opposite situation will occur for protons traveling westward, resulting in an east–west asymmetry of flux intensities whenΔhbecomes comparable to or larger than the flux scale height(Garmire1963; Heckman &Nakano1963).The trapped-flux anisotropy is a relevant aspect of the modeling of the low Earth orbit(LEO)radiation environment, given the significant engineering implications, especially for The Astrophysical Journal,919:114(6pp), 2021 October 1https://doi.org/10.3847/1538-4357/ac1677© 2021. Abstract

Time-dependent energy spectra of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) carry fundamental information regarding their origin and propagation. When observed at the Earth, these spectra are significantly affected by the solar wind and the embedded solar magnetic field that permeates the heliosphere, changing significantly over an 11-year solar cycle. Energy spectra of GCRs measured during different epochs of solar activity provide crucial information for a thorough understanding of solar and heliospheric phenomena. The PAMELA experiment had collected data for almost ten years (15th June 2006 - 23rd January 2016), including the minimum phase of solar cycle 23 and the maximum phase of solar cycle 24. In this paper, we present new spectra for helium nuclei measured by the PAMELA instrument from January 2010 to September 2014 over a three Carrington rotation time basis. These data are compared to the PAMELA spectra measured during the previous solar minimum providing a picture of the time dependence of the helium nuclei fluxes over a nearly full solar cycle. Time and rigidity dependencies are observed in the proton-to-helium flux ratios. The force-field approximation of the solar modulation was used to relate these dependencies to the shapes of the local interstellar proton and helium-nuclei spectra., 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The features of the author’s patented method for determining the coordinates of moving objects using radio frequency identification tags (RFID tags) are studied, in which the coordinates of their constant position on the object’s path are recorded. On a moving object (personnel, warehouse forklift, car, etc.), RFID tag readers are installed that interact with RFID tags installed on the ground and read their coordinates. Thereby, the coordinates of a moving object on the track are accurately and quickly determined. A methodology for choosing an implementation option is proposed and examples of applying the obtained results in mines, warehouses, on automobile routes, for civil and dual-use systems are given. The necessity of using passive RFID tags and a circularly polarized reader antenna is established. The resulting solution has no real restrictions on the speed of moving objects.

Abstract

A software package is developed for numerical calculations of particle trajectories in the Earth’s magnetosphere, and are given examples of its use in processing PAMELA experiment data. The particle-in-cell technique is applied according to the Buneman–Boris scheme. The approach is compared to other means of calculation often used to model the motion of charged particles in electromagnetic fields. The software package is tested by reproducing known effects of cosmic ray physics in the magnetosphere.

Criteria are selected for identifying direct and return albedo protons in the Geant 4 environment by modeling the flight of particles through the PAMELA device. The criteria are applied to PAMELA experimental data. Differential energy spectra of the direct and return albedo protons are reconstructed for low and high geomagnetic latitudes by processing and analyzing the data.

Abstract

Preliminary data from measuring time variations in the differential energy spectra of galactic cosmic ray lithium nuclei in the ridgidity range of 0.5–100 GV are presented for the first time. The measurements were made for the period from 2006 to 2014 with annual averaging based on data from the PAMELA experiment. Selection criteria for lithium nuclei are constructed, their efficiency is estimated, and the acceptance of the instrument is determined. The behavior of the obtained spectra is consistent with variations in solar activity over the considered time interval.

Abstract

A model of the generalized criterion for the maximum deviation of a signal (process) is proposed and investigated, which makes it possible to determine a constant time interval between adjacent samples from a signal (process). The criterion is based on the properties of convex power functions of the time modulus, depends on the order of the power function and the magnitude of the permissible error of the stepwise or linear approximation of the function from the samples. The criterion is intended for use in real‑time management systems, it allows to reasonably determine the time sampling interval. In the criterion, several maximum parameters of the signal are mathematically interrelated, which distinguishes it from known analogues. It is shown that for the calculation of the time interval of the signal, it is optimal to use more than three maximal values of its initial derivatives. The calculation technique is given and an example of practical application of the obtained results is given when constructing the data acquisition channel of the real‑time control system.

Abstract

On the basis of the temporal behavior of the galactic cosmic rays and the heliospheric factors observed in 2007–2008 and 2014–2015, their average heliolongitude distributions are formed and compared. In addition to the neutron monitor data, the provisional database of daily average galactic cosmic ray proton intensities measured by the PAMELA satellite-borne experiment in 2006–2015 is used. It is shown that the properties of the heliolongitude distributions in the above periods are substantially different.

Abstract

The puzzle of direct dark matter searches can b solved in the model of an OHe dark atom, which consists of a stable O−− lepton core and a nuclear interacting (alpha particle) shell of a primordial helium nuclei. In this model, positive results of the DAMA group can be explained by annual modulation of radiative capture of OHe atoms to low-energy bound states with sodium nuclei, which does not take place under the conditions of other underground experiments. The existence of such a low-energy bound state is the key problem of the OHe model of composite dark matter. The complexity of this problem, which has not found a correct solution during the last 15 years, requires a consistent approach to its solution. Within the framework of the proposed approach to such modeling, in order to reveal the essence of the processes of interaction of OHe with the nuclei of baryonic matter, a classical model is used, to which the effects of quantum physics and final size of nuclei are successively added. The numerical model of the interaction of the “dark” OHe atom with the nuclei is developed by successive addition of realistic features of a quantum-mechanical description to the initial classical problem of three point-like bodies (O−− particle, the He nucleus and the target nucleus). The developed approach leads to a numerical model describing the OHe-nucleus system with self-consistent accounting for nuclear attraction and electromagnetic interaction of dark atom with nuclei. The model can prove the interpretation of the results of the direct underground experimental dark matter search in the terms of the dark atom hypothesis.

Abstract

We present a study of the solar-cycle variations of >80 MeV proton flux intensities in the lower edge of the inner radiation belt, based on the measurements of the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) mission. The analyzed data sample covers an ~8 year interval from 2006 July to 2014 September, thus spanning from the decaying phase of the 23rd solar cycle to the maximum of the 24th cycle. We explored the intensity temporal variations as a function of drift shell and proton energy, also providing an explicit investigation of the solar-modulation effects at different equatorial pitch angles. PAMELA observations offer new important constraints for the modeling of low-altitude particle radiation environment at the highest trapping energies., accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

Abstract

We present a study of the east-west anisotropy of trapped-proton fluxes in low-Earth orbit based on the measurements of the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) experiment. The differential intensities of eastward- and westward-traveling protons detected in the South Atlantic Anomaly region were estimated as a function of equatorial pitch angle and drift shell, for six energy bins between 80 MeV and 2 GeV. We found that, as a consequence of the strong atmospheric gradient coupled with the large gyroradius in this energy range, the intensities of eastward fluxes exceed those of westward fluxes by a factor of ∼10-20. However, the reported directional asymmetry also depends on the sign of the local flux gradient, resulting in more intense westward fluxes beyond the radial distances where the inner belt peaks. PAMELA observations can be used to improve the description of the near-Earth radiation environment at lowest altitudes and highest trapping energies, where current theoretical and empirical models are affected by the largest uncertainties.

Abstract

Using measurements from the PAMELA and ARINA spectrometers onboard the RESURS DK-1 satellite, we have examined the 27-day intensity variations in galactic cosmic ray (GCR) proton fluxes in 2007-2008. The PAMELA and ARINA data allow for the first time a study of time profiles and the rigidity dependence of the 27-day variations observed directly in space in a wide rigidity range from ~300 MV to several GV. We find that the rigidity dependence of the amplitude of the 27-day GCR variations cannot be described by the same power-law at both low and high energies. A flat interval occurs at rigidity R = GV with a power-law index gamma = - 0.13+/-0.44 for PAMELA, whereas for R >= 1 GV the power-law dependence is evident with index gamma = - 0.51+/-0.11. We describe the rigidity dependence of the 27-day GCR variations for PAMELA and ARINA data in the framework of the modulation potential concept using the force-field approximation for GCR transport. For a physical interpretation, we have considered the relationship between the 27-day GCR variations and solar wind plasma and other heliospheric parameters. Moreover, we have discussed possible implications of MHD modeling of the solar wind plasma together with a stochastic GCR transport model concerning the effects of corotating interaction regions., 13 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Precise time-dependent measurements of the Z = 2 component in the cosmic radiation provide crucial information about the propagation of charged particles through the heliosphere. The PAMELA experiment, with its long flight duration (2006 June 15-2016 January 23) and the low energy threshold (80 MeV/n) is an ideal detector for cosmic-ray solar modulation studies. In this paper, the helium nuclei spectra measured by the PAMELA instrument from 2006 July to 2009 December over a Carrington rotation time basis are presented. A state-of-the-art three-dimensional model for cosmic-ray propagation inside the heliosphere was used to interpret the time-dependent measured fluxes. Proton-to-helium flux ratio time profiles at various rigidities are also presented in order to study any features that could result from the different masses and local interstellar spectra shapes.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a method that makes it possible to to improve energy reconstruction for data obtained via thin heterogeneous calorimeters for direct measurements of cosmic rays with energies of TeV and higher. Despite the large number of modern experimental complexes, the primary energy of cosmic nuclei with energies above 1 TeV is determined with large errors associated with fluctuations in the development of the cascade. For heterogeneous calorimeters, transient effects give an additional negative effect. In this paper we analyze the main causes of fluctuations and discuss a method for reducing the effect of fluctuations on the results of primary energy reconstruction. The method of accumulation of signal along the spectrum (ASAS) is used to reduce fluctuations associated with transient effects. The method was tested using the heterogeneous calorimeter of the PAMELA collaboration. It is shown that the proposed approach makes it possible to correctly determine the energy of slowly developing showers, the maxima of which are not measured.

Abstract

In the period from 2006 to 2016, experiments based on the use of the PAMELA and ARINA spectrometers and aimed at detecting cosmic rays were performed on board the RESURS-DK1 satellite. Although the main goal of these experiments was to study the galactic component of cosmic rays, the instruments in question also detected, over a broad energy range, solar particles accelerated in powerful explosive processes on the Sun (solar flares). A list of solar events in which the PAMELA and ARINA spectrometers detected, in various years of their operation, an increase in the intensities of fluxes of solar protons whose energies were above 45 MeV is presented among other things.

Abstract

The PAMELA and ARINA spectrometers installed on board the Resurs-DK1 spacecraft measure different components of the cosmic ray flux in a broad range of energies, including the interval from 30 MeV to tens of GeV, with high resolution during the period of June, 2006, to January, 2016. The results from these measurements allow us to obtain new information on the characteristics of variations in Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), including their period, amplitude, and dependence on particle energy. This work presents the first preliminary results of this investigation, obtained via wavelet analysis of a temporal series of proton and helium nucleus fluxes.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a method that makes it possible to use an ultrathin calorimeter for direct measurements of cosmic rays with energies of TeV and higher. The problems of determining the primary energy with a thin calorimeter, due to large fluctuations in shower development, the low statistics of analyzed events and the large size required for the calorimeter, are considered in detail. A solution to these problems is proposed on the basis of a lessening fluctuation method. This method is based on the assumption of the universality of the development of cascades initiated by particles of the same energy and mass. For energy reconstruction, so-called correlation curves are used. The main analyzed quantities are the size of the cascade and the rate of its development. The method was tested using the calorimeter of the PAMELA collaboration. Based on simulations, it is shown that the primary energy can be determined on the ascending branch of the cascade curve. This fact solves the problems associated with the need to increase the calorimeter thickness with an increase in primary energy and with the limitation of the analyzed events. The proposed technique is universal for different energies and different nuclei.

Abstract

The paper provides a review of the results of precision measurements of the fluxes of different charged components of galactic cosmic rays (positrons and antiprotons, protons and helium nuclei) in modern experiments with magnetic spectrometers PAMELA and AMS-02, operating successfully for a few years (since 2006 and 2011, respectively) in Earth orbit. A priority of the PAMELA spectrometer scientific discoveries is noted. It is also noted that the measurements from the AMS-02 experiment are of high statistical accuracy and have reliably confirmed previous data, having been able to advance to a higher energy range.

Abstract

The possibility of explaining the positron anomaly on the basis of models involving the darkmatter annihilation or decay is being widely discussed at the present time. However, such models are severely constrained by data on cosmic gamma radiation. Two different procedures that rely on the χ2 criterion and which permit taking this constraint into account are considered in the present study. In one case, the use of positron data alone in searches for a minimum value of χ2 via varying model parameters is followed by a comparison with gamma-radiation data. In the second case, the χ2 functional is minimized by simultaneously employing positron and gamma-radiation data, whereby a more lenient (more “flexible”) constraint is obtained. Nevertheless, either procedure rules out the possibility of explaining the positron anomaly in terms of unstable dark matter distributed over the whole halo. The assumption that the dark-matter component undergoing annihilation (decay) is concentrated within the galactic disk makes it possible to remove the constraint in either case.

Abstract

The first results from measuring the spectra of solar neutrons with energies of ~10-1000 MeV in the solar flares of 2006-2015 observed by the PAMELA international space experiment are presented. The PAMELA neutron detector with 3He counters and a moderator with an area of 0.18 m2 allows us to estimate the flux of solar neutrons during solar flares. Solar neutrons with energies of ~10-1000 MeV likely occurred in 21 out of the 24 analyzed flares of 2006-2015. © 2017, Allerton Press, Inc.

Abstract

We present the energy dependence of the cross section for the inelastic interaction of protons with the tungsten in the energy range from an order GeV to a hundred GeV using the data of the PAMELA space experiment. It was intended for the precision measurements of the cosmic ray fluxes of different nature and include a set of detectors for the reliable determination of the particle characteristics. We present the comparison of the obtained results with the measurements at accelerators and with existing theoretical models. Abstract

The PAMELA magnetic spectrometer was launched onboard the Resurs-DK1 satellite into a near-polar Earth orbit with an altitude of 350-600 km, in order to study fluxes of cosmic ray particles and antiparticles in the wide energy range of ~80 MeV to hundreds of GeV. The results from observations of electron and positron fluxes in 2006-2016 are presented.

Abstract

A useful parametrization of the energy spectrum of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) near Earth is offered by the so-called force-field model which describes the shape of the entire spectrum with a single parameter, the modulation potential. While the usefulness of the force-field approximation has been confirmed for regular periods of solar modulation, it was not tested explicitly for disturbed periods, when \GCR\ are locally modulated by strong interplanetary transients. Here we use direct measurements of protons and α -particles performed by the \PAMELA\ space-borne instrument during December 2006, including a major Forbush decrease, in order to directly test the validity of the force-field parameterization. We conclude that (1) The force-field parametrization works very well in describing the energy spectra of protons and α -particles directly measured by \PAMELA\ outside the Earths atmosphere; (2) The energy spectrum of \GCR\ can be well parameterized by the force-field model also during a strong Forbush decrease; (3) The estimate of the \GCR\ modulation parameter, obtained using data from the world-wide neutron monitor network, is in good agreement with the spectra directly measured by \PAMELA\ during the studied interval. This result is obtained on the basis of a single event analysis, more events need to be analyzed.

Abstract

The results of measuring albedo deuteron fluxes in the vicinity of the Earth are presented. The data were obtained in the PAMELA experiment conducted aboard the Resurs DK-1 artificial Earth satellite. High-precision detectors of the instrument setup allow us to identify albedo deuterons and measure their spectra in the energy interval from 70 to 600 MeV/nucleon at altitudes of 350-600 km for different geomagnetic latitudes.

Abstract

The future GAMMA-400 γ-ray telescope will provide fundamentally new data on discrete sources and spectra of γ-ray emissions and electrons + positrons due to its unique angular and energy resolutions in the wide energy range from 20 MeV up to several TeV. The γ-ray telescope consists of the anticoincidence system (AC), the converter-tracker (C), the time-of-flight system (S1 and S2), the position-sensitive and electromagnetic calorimeters (CC1 and CC2), the scintillation detectors of the calorimeter (S3 and S4) and lateral anticoincidence detectors of the calorimeter (LD). To extend the GAMMA-400 capabilities to measure γ-ray bursts, Monte-Carlo simulations were performed for lateral aperture of the one of the versions of GAMMA-400. Second-level trigger based on signals from CC2, LD, S3, and S4 allows us to detect γ-ray bursts in the energy range of ~10-300 MeV with high effective area about 1 m2.

Fluxes of electrons and positrons with energies above ~100 MeV in the near-Earth space are measured with the PAMELA magnetic spectrometer aboard the Resurs DK-1 satellite launched on June 15, 2006, into a quasipolar orbit with an altitude of 350–600 km and an inclination of 70°. Calculating the trajectories of detected electrons and positrons in the magnetosphere of the Earth allows us to determine their origin and isolate particles produced during interaction between cosmic rays and the residual atmosphere. Spatial distributions of albedo, quasitrapped, and trapped (in the radiation belt) positrons and electrons are presented. The ratio of positron and electron fluxes suggests that the fluxes of trapped particles of the radiation belt and quasitrapped secondary particles have different mechanisms of formation.

Abstract

An approach for measuring energy of cosmic-ray particles with energies E > 1012 eV using an ultrathin calorimeter is presented. The method is based on the analysis of the correlation dependence of the cascade size on the rate of development of the cascade process. In order to determine the primary energy, measurements are made based on the number of secondary particles in the cascade, N e , at two observation levels Z 1 and Z 2, separated by an absorber layer. Based on the obtained measurements, a correlation analysis of the dependence of logN e (Z 1) on th e difference d N = logN e (Z 1) − logN e (Z 2) is carried out. The correlation curves (logN e from d N) in the negative part of the dN axis are almost parallel to each other and practically do not depend on the depth of the cascade development. It makes it possible to determine the primary energy using an ultrathin calorimeter. The best option for applying the method is a calorimeter, which has a unit with a heavy target, leading to the rapid development of the cascade, and a homogeneous measuring and absorption block.

Abstract

New results on the short-term galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) intensity variation (Forbish decrease) in 2006 December measured by the PAMELA instrument are presented. Forbush decreases are sudden suppressions of the GCR intensities, which are associated with the passage of interplanetary transients such as shocks and interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs). Most of the past measurements of this phenomenon were carried out with groundbased detectors such as neutron monitors or muon telescopes. These techniques allow only the indirect detection of the overall GCR intensity over an integrated energy range. For the first time, thanks to the unique features of the PAMELA magnetic spectrometer, the Forbush decrease, commencing on 2006 December 14 and following a CME at the Sun on 2006 December 13, was studied in a wide rigidity range (0.4-20 GV) and for different species of GCRs detected directly in space. The daily averaged GCR proton intensity was used to investigate the rigidity dependence of the amplitude and the recovery time of the Forbush decrease. Additionally, for the first time, the temporal variations in the helium and electron intensities during a Forbush decrease were studied. Abstract

Despite the significant progress achieved in recent years, the physical mechanisms underlying the origin of solar energetic particles (SEPs) are still a matter of debate. The complex nature of both particle acceleration and transport poses challenges to developing a universal picture of SEP events that encompasses both the low-energy (from tens of keV to a few hundreds of MeV) observations made by space-based instruments and the GeV particles detected by the worldwide network of neutron monitors in ground-level enhancements (GLEs). The high-precision data collected by the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) satellite experiment offer a unique opportunity to study the SEP fluxes between $\sim$80 MeV and a few GeV, significantly improving the characterization of the most energetic events. In particular, PAMELA can measure for the first time with good accuracy the spectral features at moderate and high energies, providing important constraints for current SEP models. In addition, the PAMELA observations allow the relationship between low and high-energy particles to be investigated, enabling a clearer view of the SEP origin. No qualitative distinction between the spectral shapes of GLE, sub-GLE and non-GLE events is observed, suggesting that GLEs are not a separate class, but are the subset of a continuous distribution of SEP events that are more intense at high energies. While the spectral forms found are to be consistent with diffusive shock acceleration theory, which predicts spectral rollovers at high energies that are attributed to particles escaping the shock region during acceleration, further work is required to explore the relative influences of acceleration and transport processes on SEP spectra., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Measurements of secondary-electron and secondary-positron fluxes below the geomagnetic cutoff in near-Earth space were performed by means of the PAMELA magnetic spectrometer installed on board the Resurs-DK1 satellite launched on June 15, 2006, in an elliptical orbit of inclination 70A degrees and altitude 350 to 600 km. This spectrometer permits measuring the fluxes of electrons and positrons over a wide energy range, as well as determining their spatial distributions to a precision of about 2A degrees. A calculation of particle trajectories in the geomagnetic field makes it possible to separate electrons and positrons originating from cosmic-ray interactions in the Earth's magnetosphere. The spatial distributions of quasitrapped, trapped, and short-lived albedo positrons and electrons of energy above 70 MeV in the radiation belt were analyzed. The ratio of the electron-to-positron fluxes and the energy spectra of the electrons and positrons in question are indicative of different productionmechanisms for stably trapped and quasitrapped secondary particles.

Abstract

The PAMELA experiment has been collecting data since 2006; its results indicate a rise in the positron fraction with respect to the sum of electrons and positrons in the cosmic-ray (CR) spectrum above 10 GeV. This excess can be due to additional sources, as SNRs or pulsars, which can lead to an anisotropy in the local CR positron, detectable from current experiments. We report on the analysis on spatial distributions of positron events collected by PAMELA, taking into account also the geomagnetic field effects. No significant deviation from the isotropy has been observed.
