1. A correlative approach to evaluating the links between local microstructural parameters and creep initiated cavities

Abstract

The study and modelling of material degradation processes, such as the initiation and growth of creep cavities in high-temperature applications, require a correlative and comprehensive knowledge of the microstructure. However, individual microscopy is limited to a small region and specific microstructural information of the specimen. This work demonstrates a novel correlative microscopy approach for characterising creep cavitation and establishing correlations with local microstructural parameters in a statistical manner. This approach combines datasets from stitched higher-resolution backscattered electron (BSE) images, XeF2 Focused Ion Beam (FIB) images, and backscattered electron diffraction (EBSD) maps with advanced image correlation techniques. Deep-learning image segmentation techniques and statistical analysis are applied to find relations between creep cavitation and local microstructural environment. This approach is demonstrated in a cyclic creep-tested 316H stainless steel specimen with extensive creep cavities. The results show that in this material, strain localization, grain boundary misorientation, and substantial precipitation dominate the nucleation of cavities, whereas other microstructural properties such as grain size and Schmid factor play smaller roles. This study presents the use of the correlative microscopy approach to provide new insights into creep cavitation behaviour and its implications for establishing creep cavitation damage models.

Abstract

Tobasco et al. [Physics Letters A, 382:382-386, 2018; see https://doi.org/10.1016/j.physleta.2017.12.023] recently suggested that trajectories of ODE systems that optimize the infinite-time average of a certain observable can be localized using sublevel sets of a function that arise when bounding such averages using so-called auxiliary functions. In this paper we demonstrate that this idea is viable and allows for the computation of extremal unstable periodic orbits (UPOs) for polynomial ODE systems. First, we prove that polynomial optimization is guaranteed to produce auxiliary functions that yield near-sharp bounds on time averages, which is required in order to localize the extremal orbit accurately. Second, we show that points inside the relevant sublevel sets can be computed efficiently through direct nonlinear optimization. Such points provide good initial conditions for UPO computations. As a proof of concept, we then combine these methods with a single-shooting Newton-Raphson algorithm to study extremal UPOs for a nine-dimensional model of sinusoidally forced shear flow. We discover three previously unknown families of UPOs, one of which simultaneously minimizes the mean energy dissipation rate and maximizes the mean perturbation energy relative to the laminar state for Reynolds numbers approximately between 81.24 and 125., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. v3: update discussion after Theorem 1, fixed typos

Abstract

In high-entropy alloys (HEAs), the local chemical fluctuations from disordered solute solution state into segregation, precipitation and ordering configurations are complex due to the large number of elements. In this work, the cluster expansion (CE) Hamiltonian for multi-component alloy systems is developed in order to investigate the dependence of chemical ordering of HEAs as a function of temperature dependence due to derivation of configuration entropy from the ideal solute solution. Analytic expressions for Warren-Cowley short-range order (SRO) parameters are derived for a five component alloy system. The theoretical formulation is used to investigate the evolution of the ten different SRO parameters in the MoNbTaVW and the sub-quaternary systems obtained by MonteCarlo simulations within the combined CE and first-principles formalism., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures
